Rolf,
Can you check the FSM for the the linkage lengths for a 83 240D.
I don't have a copy of the FSM and my wifes 240D Auto linkage was
butchered by a jack leg shade tree mech that the PO used.
Took me an hour to straighten out the vacuum hoses that he screwed up
trying to fix a hard shifting transmission, I fixed that with a fluid
and filter change.
Tranny fluid was BLACK looked like PO or PO before him never changed it.

When the other tech shut down the car buddy noticed
Aux fans were turning the wrong way. CCW instead of CW.
Swapped the leads head pressure dropped back to normal.
This was on a 124.
BTW Wilton My Buddy commends you on your Evap Swap.

Windows XP is Dead as far as M$ shipping any more copies out.
What the Retailers and Resellers have on hand or Ordered before 30 June
06 is it.
Free Support goes through 2010 after that it will be Paid Support until
2012.

Windows 7 is supposed be released January 09.
The team that's working is M$ Old Timers not the Newbies that developed
Vista.
The kernel is supposed to be 2/3rds smaller that XP and really fast.
Also ALL programs that ran under XP WILL run under Win7.

Gates knows Big time that they screwed up with Vista and at least are trying
to correct the problem. We'll have to see about that.

Kaleb, Try one of the Virtual Machine programs like VMWare or Virtual Box.
XP Programs work great in them.

Re: [MBZ] Truck advice

2008-06-13 Thread Russ Williams
Dan
I'm gonna jump in here and tell you about my neighbors Ford Ranger.
'04 model w/4cyl and 5 speed manny transmission.
Truck NEVER got close to the advertised fuel millage. He drives about
40 miles round trip to work every day 80% of is Interstate millage.
His millage averaged 18mpg. The times he took in on trips the best he
got out of it was 22 @ 65mph.
He took it to 2 different stealerships for the fuel millage problem
got the same from both "Oh they never get what the EPA sez" but I can say
that they did try improve it for him.
Then last year he noticed a pain bubble in the bed. We started looking
at the underside and about 60% of the bed where it sat on the frame rails
had Rust Cancer. Back to the Stealership he goes. "Sorry Charlie That's
Your Problem it's Out of Warranty". Head of the Body shop told him on
the sly
that every Ranger made has the same problem eventually. I could see
that happing
in an area that uses salt on the roads, but we don't do that here Salt
goes in
the Pot to Boil Crawfish.
He finally had it with the Ranger and traded it in on a Dodge 1500 w/
6cyl & 5 speed
manny tranny. He's had it two months and is getting 20mpg on the same drive.
I know of a couple of people that has Club Cabs Dakotas one with a 4cyl
Manny and the
other with a 6 and Auto Tranny. They both love them and would buy another.

YMMV

John,

See if there is a place around there that will fill in the crack.
In had it done on my 240D about 6 years ago. Can't hardly tell

with a UV activated Glue.
Also did 3 Bullet/Star Cracks all for 60 bucks.
You Ins agent should know who does it around there.
Some Ins Co's will pay for it with No Deductible.

Re: [MBZ] OT Linux Query

2008-05-11 Thread Russ Williams
Gerry,

Dell and M$ had a problem awhile back a series of Product ID keys
weren't sent to M$ by Dell or M$'s server dumped them. Each one is blaming
the other. Anyway when you go to Activate XP over the Internet and you get
the wrong code warning there is a 800 number to call. Call the number
explain that you have a valid Product ID Key and that you are
reinstalling the O/S.
You may have to read the ID key to them so write it down before you call.
They will issue a you a NEW Key to use.
I've BTDT a few time on Dell products it's a PITA but you'll have a
working system
afterwards.

Good Luck

Re: [MBZ] ebay WTF??

2008-05-05 Thread Russ Williams
Kaleb,

Stay away from any system that is running Vista and doesn't have 2 gigs
of RAM.
Unless you like to play the waiting game.
You may have a problem getting Drivers for XP for the eMachines.
Their web site only shows Vista drivers which aren't compatible with XP.
You MAY be able to find XP drivers for the system but that is doubtful.

Had a HP System in 2 weeks ago that the guy was pulling his hair out running
Vista. He wanted to swap to XP. After 2 days of trying different drivers
could
not get the Video or Audio to work right. HP had modified the Intel Mobo so
the XP drivers wouldn't work.

Good Luck.

Bzzt Wrong
You can install Widoze over the top of it self.
The problem you will run into is the New install doesn't
touch the Registry files so if there is junk in the Registry
it will remain.
Kaleb try using the Registry in CCleaner to get rid of the crap left behind.
I'll send you a program off line that may repair your Internet connection.

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Computer Trauma/Stuff Running in Background

2008-05-04 Thread Russ Williams
Bob,

Start by going to this web site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
Next open up the Run Command [ Start > Run ]
Type in msconfig Click OK.
When System Configuration Utility opens up click on the "Start Up" Tab
On the Left hand column you will see a list of commands
Start at the top and one by one use the Search feature at the Bleeping
Computer
web site and use the recommendations they give for turning off the programs.
WARNING DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR ANTI-VIRUS By mistake :-) .
When you finish Click the Apply Button on the Bottom.
Windoze will tell you You'll Need to Reboot.
Reboot
You will get a Dialog Box Stating you Have Changed Start up settings.
There is a Check box that says not to show again. Check the Box and
click Ok.

Also there is a good, and best of all FREE, program to get rid of the
Temp Internet files
and other Crap on Your system. Originally named Crap Cleaner it has been
renamed CCleaner
can be found at: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds Download the
Slim Version
It doesn't have that darn Google Search bar included.

Good Luck

Look for it in the Section of the store where the Networking supplies are.

Gerry,
Try the following and see if that works.
Let me know if it does or doesn't.

1.Install current full tar.gz of martian
http://www.barrelsoutofbond.org/downloads/martian/
2.Unpack martian somewhere you can work on it
/home/user/martian or similar
3.As root go into the subdir where martian is located
and run the following:
make all
make install
then go into the subdir called scripts and run
./automate.sh
./remove_outdated.sh
4.Now you can delete martian it's installed
5.Edit /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common
DISABLED_MODULES=”” to say
DISABLED_MODULES=”ltm” this kills the nonworking ltmodem
6.Edit /etc/init.d/martian
DEVICE=”/dev/ttySM0” to say
DEVICE=”/dev/modem”
7.Now as root enter
update-rc.d martian defaults

Re: [MBZ] OT: New Apple operating software

2008-01-13 Thread Russ Williams
Gerry,

Most Linux Distro's don't handle WIN-Modems well. Not saying that it
can't be done.
If you will run Belarc when you
have your system booted in WinXP and find Brand and
Model of your modem and send the info to me I'll check with the Linux
Experts that I have
contact with and see if they can come up with a driver that will work
for you in PC-Linux.
I have Xandros and PC-Linux installed on my laptop and both identified
the win-modem and
installed the correct driver.
If there isn't a driver that will work for your modem you'll have to
switch out the modem
for a Non-Win-Modem type. I may have a 3-Com around here that you can
have, I'll have to
do some digging for it.

Brian,

As You know by now No Zerk Fittings on your 240D.
As far as the Creaking check the Tie-Rods.
My wife's 240 sounded like a Haunted House every time it was
driven over the speed bumps in our parking lot.
About a month ago she had a flat on the right front.
When I had it on the jack stand while I was changing the tire
I noticed play in the steering. Tracked it down to the outer
ball joint on the Tie-Rod. Ordered new Tie-Rods and replace BOTH
Sides. Well Well Glory Be No More Hunted House Sounds for the front end.

Brian,

That's the right filter.
IMHO I'd use it in a pinch and Order a Mann from Rusty PDQ then change
over to the Mann as soon as it arrives. No need to do an oil change when you
do it. Just the filter and add oil that will be trapped in the filter
when you

do the change.
Don't know about the Wix but other after market filters have been known
to come apart.

Making for one Hellofa mess.

Re: [MBZ] Leaking R134 valve

2007-05-30 Thread Russ Williams

Levi,
R-12 connectors look like a Tire Stem welded to the pipe.
When R-12 to R-134 conversions are done the R-134 adapter is screwed on
top of the R-12 connector.
Some of the 134 adapters have Red Lock-Tite (Stud & Bearing) on the
threads making it hard to remove
the 134 adapter. But it can be done. Just a little heat will release the
Lock-Tite,
Go to your local McParts store and Look in the A/C Supplies area You
will find the adapters (Under 5 Bucks)
Pick up a set then change out the leaking one you have. Screw off Old
Screw on New.

Levi Smith wrote:

Hmm... Dunno, I don't know what R12 connectors are like. There's a dust
cap that screws on to a "pop-on" coupling that works with any of the R134

know, perhaps it's somehow threaded onto a smaller piece on the pipe?

This is sounding like I'm going to be better off to take it to someone who

The ones with their own schrader valves, or the ones that fit over

removing the adapter (or was it coated in permanent threadlocker?).

Latest thing in the hood is to re-badge MB's.
Was in My Fav MB Shop a few weeks back to chat with my buddy the MB

I made a comment that you don't see many of those around. His reply was
Especially like this one.

When he let down the rack he told me to take a look at the Eng.
Boy that was the Shortest V-12 I had ever seen. Actually 1/2 of a V-12.
Seems the thing to do is put the AMG bages and S Class badges on most
any MB.

This one was truly a C-320.

Needless to say, the 250D is a euro car. Its euro cool. Its got the
same basic engine as the US version, except no EGR and all that crap.
Wonder if it has more power than the US version. Also, this car has
leather, burl wood instead of zebrano, power front windows, manual rear
windows, no sunroof, no airbag, manual seats, rubber floormats, triangle
in the trunk, fire extinguisher is mounted to the front of the drivers
seat like it should be. Also has ACC. So its got the usually assorted
strange euro options.

Anthony,

I got a set of Bunt's off eBay for 90 bucks Shipped. Shipping was the

Those suckers aren't light.
The Local PNP wants 40 bucks a rim for them. The last time I checked.
The next time I make a run by there I'll ask the going price for you.

They seem to run ~$50-70 a rim on ebay, but so many times prices are

There are two SD's at a local wrecking yard.. I was considering purchasing
the two spares, if they're there, and two cleaner rims.. About what should
they go for?? Are they getting harder to find, should I consider purchasing
a "spare" or two??

BTW-- the replacement window arrived quickly and went in, pretty much hassle
free-- with the exception of the old window gaskets pretty much falling
apart.. I don't plan to keep it forever, and it's something that happens..

For the 123.1 chassis, the only problem with the diagram I sent was that
the "Unlocking" and "Locking" labels on the schematic were reversed. The
diagram I sent (which I got off the Internet) was apparently a colorized
version of the diagram found in the manual. The corrected version is
attached. What's confusing is the way Mercedes drew the linkage that
connects to the door safety knob (button); pulling a vacuum on the upper
chamber of a door element should make the button go down, not up as the
linkage drawn shows.

I also found a note in the manual that says that the connections to the
master vacuum switch are reversed for the Coupe, in case you're

Emil,

Your Relay is on the froward side of the Drivers Fender well.
Very easy to change out if you need to.
Make sure the Fuse is in good shape. Open the cover on the aft side of the
relay you will see a 80amp strip fuse held on by two phillips screws.
Remove the screws and then the fuse. They will develop minute cracks that
can't be seen when installed.

As far as the Antenna you can pull the cover and just disconnect the Power
Leads to it then Pull the antenna up. Had to do this on a buddy's 300D
until

I got time to track down the problem.

The relay is more difficulty because of its location. I'm not sure where it
is - perhaps someone else can tell us? The one on my 78 240D is under the

I would like to tackle the GP's and the relay 1st. The weather here got
cold a little while ago, and i had a tough time starting the car and
figured it had to be the GS's and while doing that i would upgrade the
relay. I have no trouble startint the car when the weather is warm. My
second item would be changing the tranny filter, fuel filters, pre-filter,
and oil filter. After that would be the truck seal and antenna mounting(
put new cd player in and sounds good, but can not pick up local stations
with antenna in down position. I tried to lift it up manually and got it
about 1/2 inch up and it pulled itself back down. Not sure if it is the
switch or motor, but no mater what i put the switch on it doesn't get any
responce from the atenna, no noise or anything.)

Kevin,

Look on the Right Hand side of the Spare Tire Well. You will see a Slot and

hole is

froward of the slot.
Put the Bracket in the slot at a 90° angle insert the "Football" under
the bracket
then rotate the bracket toward the side wall of the Spare Tire Well.
Insert Bolt.
10mm I think but could be a 8mm. If I still had my wife's dear departed
SD I would

send you a pix. But Oh! Well!

If you have a MityVac you can use it to Lock the doors and see if
there's a Vacuum leak

Pressure side doesn't
use much pressure to un-lock so don't do like the Idijot at my Buddy's

What you want is an _image_ file of a text file.

Friends:

Recently, I started having a problem with hesitation when I accelerate
from a dead stop. Once the car is in motion, everything is smooth, as
it should be.

I don't have a clue as to what may be causing the problem. I have had a
few things worked on lately, including a tune-up, with new spark plug
wires and distributor, cap and rotor, etc., which seems to rule out
those things as the issues.

The only thing that I know made a difference in the idle, and I assumed
might be part of the hesitation problem, as the hesitation showed up not
too long afterwards, was a part (wish I could identify it for you) that
reduced the idle from 1,000 to 1,100 rpm at idle in park, to 550-600 rpm
at idle in park. This part plugs in just under the air cleaner housing
in the front, top part of the engine, if that helps identify what it
might be. The engine idles smoothly when in park, neutral or in gear
(runs about 450 rpm in gear at a stop and there is no "tremble").

My second problem is an intermittent hard starting problem (the starter
was replaced not too long ago and the problem just manifested itself).
Sometimes, I turn the key and it starts right up, like it always used
to. Now, though, if it doesn't start immediately, I turn the key and it
cranks for a few seconds before it finally starts. The last time that
happened, I saw smoke come out from the rear of the car (couldn't tell
what color, due to the ambient light). That was the first time I've
ever noticed smoke come from the tailpipe in the 13 years I've owned the
car.

My trusted mechanic closed shop and is leaving the N.O. area since
Katrina. So, I will be trying out a new mechanic to have this resolved
(wish I was mechanically inclined!). I would like to have an idea of
what I may be looking at before I go to a new guy.

Any thoughts any of you may have shall be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you don't pay. The issuing state WILL notify your state DMV and they

When you go to renew you will have to pay the fine at an exorbitant

Re: [MBZ] Diesel fuel and Jet Fuel

2006-03-05 Thread Russ Williams

I had a chance to drive that Beast. What a ride.
M T T is located about 30 miles from the airport I used to work
out of. Speed Channel was doing a program on the Bike and the Truck.

At the time they were using Allison C250 engines that had been removed
from Aviation service. Now they are using the RR Allison version that
was designed as a GenSet power plant.

Speed Channel used our Heli Base as a Back drop because most of our
Light Helos used the same engine. I got to fly the Camera A/C that did the
Speed runs filming on the runway. That's how I was one of the Lucky Ones
that got to take the bike for a ride. They limited the throttle so we
couldn't go past 80. WOWSERS!!! What a ride. Accelerated like a Scaled
Dog. Also got to make some runs in the Pickup truck.
H'mm wonder if Air Logistics has any old C250 engines that I can put
into my 240D. ;-)

As for running Jet-A in a M-B. I ran my first 240D on nothing but Jet-A
when I was at work and a Blend Of 50-50 Jet-A & #2 Diesel. When on pure
Jet-A fuel millage dropped from 29 MPG to 27 MPG. We used Jet-A with PRIST
Additive, BioCide, sure did a job cleaning out the tank of all the bugs.
If I put a Qt of Mobile Jet1 in the millage went up to 28MPG.
There was 6 of us that had MB Diesels 350SD down to My 240D. We all ran
Jet-A and Nobody had any problems.
The guys that Diesel Trucks used JetA too but put motor oil in with it
to lube their injector pumps. Except One Idiot that had a Ford F250 Power
Choke. Idiot salesman & Service Manager told him he could run on JetA
without using motor oil as an additive. Burnt out his IP in 5 months.
Ford wouldn't replace it under Warranty Because the Fuel was on Ford's
Approved List. We kept telling him but he wouldn't listen. Oh Well!

all 4 tires with Bridgestones, replaced shocks and struts with
Bilsteins, new Sway bar links (I believe I caused one to break by not
supporting trailing arm when changing rear shocks), replaced master
cylinder and all brake hoses(DOT 3 was used some time in the past and

air filters, all rubber fuel lines.
Things left to do: Trans fluid and filter, PS fluid and filter, wiper
motor seems weak(or I have another problem), replace Hirschmann antenna
circuit board(it is a Euro and the circuit boards are different) the
only parts I am lacking are M 1 trans fluid, the circuit board and
possibly wiper motor.

Re: [MBZ] Jack Safety

2005-12-31 Thread Russ Williams

Sure Chris,

That's how I did it when I changed the Center Bearing and carrier on
wife's 240D.

Would it be safe to work under a 123 wagon with the front two wheels on

need to get to the bottom of a wheel/driveshaft noise, and while driving it
sounds like it is coming from the back wheel, under the car it sounds like
it is coming from the driveshaft. As I inch closer to the front of the car
(with just the back jacked up and secured), the space gets tighter and I
bang my beak.

Re: [MBZ] 123 - mating differential to subframe

2005-12-29 Thread Russ Williams

Tom,

Just loosen the rear stud nuts until they are almost off.
Then if you have a floor jack use it to jack up the diff. to
the subframe. Don't take off the nuts for the front studs while
doing this. It's one Big PITA to get them all stabbed into the subframe
again.
I just went thru this with my wife's 123 240D.

BTW Gang When I drained the fluid on the Diff. it was Clean No Metal
in it at all. The Bearings were Ok. Come to find out it was the Inboard
Passenger Drive shaft that was bad. PO had a boot split where the retaining
band clamps the boot to the Large end of the shaft. His Idiot Indy used
Silicone Seal on the shaft then Super Glued the boot back together. But
forgot One Major Item he didn't replace the lube that was lost.
I found this when removing the shaft for the Diff. replacement.
There was only about two tablespoons of lube in the boot. Grr.
Changed out the shaft with one from donor car.

Anybody need a Diff. out of a Euro 300D I've got one.

Hello all,
I just finished replacing a rear trailing arm on my '82 300D, which was
quite an adventure. Along the way I (unnecessarily, it turned out)
separated the differential from the subframe. Now everything is back
together, but the diff refuses to fully rejoin the subframe. The two
rear studs are more or less aligned and tightened down, but the front of
the diff simply will not move the last inch or so that it needs to so
that it can be fully secured. Right now, the two front studs are just
barely poking through the subframe such that I can get the nuts on them.
And no matter how much I try to tighten them, I can't and the diff
moves no further.

Anyone know what could cause this? I'm wondering if I need to pull the
driveshaft and then try resecuring the diff? Or drop the subframe at all
three points? I am not looking forward to crawling under the car again...

Thanks,
Tom

Re: [MBZ] Leatherique MB Tex

2005-12-28 Thread Russ Williams

Don't use 409 on Vinyl. It will dry it out and crack it. DAMHIK.

Better yet, just put a space heater IN the car.

Better yet, just use 409, Fantastic, or any other kind of cleaner.
Leatherique is expensive overkill for vinyl.
