[MBZ] They gonna cut me a cheque
The insco guys are being all accommodating. Allen got a look over by their adjuster and he thinks the car is worth just enough that it does not need to be totaled. I am going to get a payment and get to take the car to a body shoppe to get the bumper replaced, and have somebody hammer out the mess the dame made of the underside of my trunk. I feel sort of sorry for the body boys who have to match my rattle can bumper paint (though they did include the clear coat, which I did apply from a can) and also have to get the splotchy color I sprayed. They want to put clear on that, but the rest of the car is single stage and I have held off on clear while I contemplate if I do a respray so it looks less mangy. Medico gave me a look over Tuesday. He was in agreement that I would probably not do the physio if he set it up, and that it really does little to help with this stuff, as it takes about the same time to heal either way. The attention does make your tummy feel good though. Just jacks up the medical payout, and I would not be seeing any of it. I did get a solid bonk on the noggin. Notes I took while awaiting the doctor visit confirmed his assessment that there was a concussion. Maybe they were owned by the same fool. The SLC what just rotted out. Mostly rust and junk that had been stripped prior to making it to the yard. The w116 was a '78, so nothing worth gathering from under the hood. The floors were rotted out. Both had nonviable spares, but bundts. I decided not to waste cash trying to bring the wheels home. I did score the all metal C107 wipers. The idiot had painted them white all over. Strip the paint, and I have something really rare. Maybe it would pay for the yard trip. [MBZ] Rolling, Rolling, Rolling.....
The OM617 had been sitting on the hoist, blocking my garage door for the past week. I had tried to use a garbage harbour fright dolly, but it just shattered when the engine was lowered on to it. I made my own out of a few scrap 2x14 and some 2x6. HF got the trashed dolly and I got some spare cash out of it. I purchased their 5.25" casters for my wheels. Once all bolted up, I rolled the thing under the now raised motor and learned it would slide just over the legs! Dropped it down and pulled the dolly away. That was totally cool. I pulled the SL out of the garage and grunted enough to get the dolly, with motor, tucked against the wall with enough room to pull a car in alongside. I am happy. The local show and shine was yesterday. I took Polei, but garnered no awards. The fellow I sold a Hirschmann to a few weeks back did win the B class (1980-1999) second place. I got him to sign up when I helped him install the antenna, which gave him two weeks to make his 560SEL into a very lovely example of the Marque. [MBZ] SDL adventures
I have been making Polei pretty for her debut at the Show and Shine this weekend. Instead of Griots products I used Maguires for compounding and wax. It looks ok. I had done the door cards in green to make it more Germanic. There was a white seat I scored from PnP months ago that just sat in the parts room awaiting my idiocy. The front seats that came with Polei had massive tears at the crease in the lower leather fronts. They work just fine, but I am too poor to re-skin. Replacement only has damage to side bolster, same as original. I would need to paint both, so I decided to just paint the replacement and see how I liked it. I pulled the rear bench after I had a few good coats on the driver seat. I have some dish soap diluted and the grey 3M pad to make them really clean. With the nice warm weather, I got good coats and allowed them to bake a few days. That seems to have taken care of the tacky nature. Maybe the smoke in the air and dust helped. This morning I pulled the driver seat out and did the swap. The seat looks really good. Only issue is that the headrest does not work. There are also a pair of two prong hook ups that do not have anything to hook too. These must do a great deal of magic. The back seats look pretty good as well. With the rear seat out I pulled a fresh antenna cable to the center console. There is a lovely Becker in the dash, but with the damage to the rear fender, I have not put a Hirschmann out back. I needed to remove the thresholds to access under the carpet. They were pretty filthy, so I cleaned them up and gave them a coat of green as well. They will live outside for a few days until the show. I did get the siren working. The hole in the receiver/drier got bits ordered, which showed up over the past week. I just got the unit today. The pressure sensor and temp sensors came earlier. I have no idea why all three boxes had to be HUGE and mostly packed with air and this giant stuffing snake. I got two boxes the size of a pair of match boxes in these 18x18x12 cardboard monsters. Same as the drier. At least I will have something to put the 525 viscosity oil in. One day. clay ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] Scavenged the W126 doors
With the motor and trans I picked up the other day, I got a set of doors he had as spares for a car no longer there. I have been pulling the seats out of Polei and making them police car green, then letting them bake in the sun. Between paint and cleaning sessions, I tore down the doors for what might be useful. It was good to learn what all went into putting them together. I think I can find uses for the four latches and door handles. It was a split at finding working window motors. At least I got a working passenger side door window to replace the nonfunctioning window in Allen. Now I can put the door carcasses on CL for some scrap guy to take away. clay ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Wiped up the OM617
I like all the ideas. I would sort of keep the engine on the hoist, but I am limited in space available, so putting it on a smaller dolly would allow me to store it in the garage. The hoist would then be able to be torn down for storage. I borrowed the load leveler, and have to return it. My garage is single car with maybe three feet to spare on the side. Just enough to stick the motor and allow a car to park. I needed an enclosed hauler, as I was also using the truck to move some furniture for my mother. The small moving truck would have been fine, with its lower deck and ramp, but all the guys had on short notice were the cargo vans. My drive is single width and steepish. I have chinese boys living across the street who have an excess of cars (pot, kettle, black) who park right across from my drive. If the dolly had been beefy enough, I could have rolled it down the ramp to the garage. clay - Original Message - From: "G Mann via Mercedes" <mercedes@okiebenz.com> Next time, buy some 4x4 lumber and cut pieces that will go across the engine lift. Rotate the engine / trans so you can let the lift down and rest the engine/trans on the legs of the lift while just enough "tension" on the lifting chain [or nylon rope, if you use that instead] to keep the engine upright and centered on the 4x4 cross pieces. If you need more stability for this "load" tie some rope to the top of the engine [what ever you can find that is solid, and to the legs of the hoist using truckers knots to pull it up tight. The whole load will then travel where ever you want to take it using the engine hoist as the "engine dolly".. Tip... sweep the drive to remove any rocks or chips that will cause the wheels to stop rolling... before you start to move the load. If you need to do it "alone" use something to chock the wheels on the engine hoist while you reset the come along for each "pull". I have done this more times than I can count.. suggest, next time.. rent a pickup truck, and back it up to the garage to unload as close as possible. This is why I now own a 12,000 lb fork lift.. ;)) BTDT On Sat, Aug 5, 2017 at 10:19 PM, redghost--- via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Yesterday I picked up a Uhaul van and picked up the rest of the past that > came with Allen. [MBZ] What Idiot...
... decided that the w201 need to have the high side port hidden under all manner of inaccessible hoses and hot things? Neighbor has recently been having me look at his benz cars. I was able to help with the W210 issues that were rather simple. He has a '90 201 that has not had AC for a while and the radio (Becker ) is not making nice sounds out of the speakers. Radio works fine from what I was able to see. It finds stations, switches to WB and plays tapes. Just has crap for sound. Fader was replaced, as was the radio at one time. Never played well since. I removed the fader and gave it some needed contact cleaner. That did not make it notably better sounding. It was too hot to remove the speakers, but that would have required pulling the cluster. As for the AC, I was trying to at least pull a vacuum and see if it would hold. My paws are just too huge to get access to the high side port under all the hoses and hot engine. There was no way to screw on the manifold hose. I had low side, but an hour of poking around just could not line up the hose. Are the cars just meant to have a single charge? I could have tried a vacuum on the low side, and then just charge without knowing if the high would hold. clay ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Yesterday I picked up a Uhaul van and picked up the rest of the past that came with Allen. Getting the spare engine/trans into the van was a huge PITA due to them not being separated. I was able to lasso a neighbor into assisting in getting the package out of the van and drug across the road and up the driveway. All the while the motor is swinging and swaying on the hoist as it gets hung up on every dang pebble and bump. Once on flat land, I slid this 1000# moving dolly under the motor and lower it. [MBZ] OT - LA in the '70's
For some reason the normal heatwave of June is manifesting in August this year. Not that August was not also capable of some scorching days. I had to hit the Harbour Fright to score an engine lift and some moving tools today. My mother requires a few items I have, be returned to her. I will also need to haul my compressor and power washer back home. There is also a much needed run to the dump from both homes, and topping it off, is the pick up of a 722.3xx transmission and an OM617 engine. The four doors and some seating for W126 are also on the bill. Anybody need a rear window for a 126? I do not, but the haul includes that. I have stacks of glass that will be headed to the transfer station. SO, I was driving on the incredibly packed freeway, having secured my loot at HF and felt I had been transported to LA county over forty years ago. Nobody was moving beyond a crawl, the sky was that funky orange tone, haze obscuring the tall buildings not a mile away, and that unbearable valley heat. Not a hot, just a brownish enveloping sticky, why is there not an ocean breeze? sort of too dang warm. Maybe this is the future for PNW. [MBZ] Klima relay for SDL
I am pretty sure I have not had access to outgoing mail since this took place. The SDL got some AC attention to the point that it got a minor fill of fake R12, but the compressor clutch would not kick in, so no more filling. The system held vacuum for two weeks. I jumped the pins on the Klima, and the clutch did kick in. So, I went on and filled it with more fake R12. Until the receiver drier began spewing goo from a hole in its side. I assume that the Klima relay is the same for all the inline six engines. Can the relay I have be made good? Maybe reflow something? This may be a task for next spring, as I do not expect to be driving Polei in the deathly heat. clay ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Hillarycare. was: Barum Tires
The cost sounds pretty high. How old are the applicants? Kids tend to cost a bunch to service. Same as old folks. I pay $1800 per annum for 24/7 365 service. Docs have a select number of clients so they can provide adequate care. The healthy do cover the sicker clients. But the fee also covers all in house testing in my case. My group has radiology, lab, cardiac, and all procedures are on the house. No nickel and dime crap with billing, its covered. I need a bone set and cast, on the house. I think they just purchased a MRI. My doc used to be standard practice, then moved in house because he could not afford the overhead of inso and paperwork employees. Now he can afford to continue being a doctor and provides great service. clay - Original Message - From: "Dan Penoff via Mercedes"To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Cc: "Dan Penoff" Sent: Thursday, February 4, 2016 6:49:39 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Hillarycare. was: Barum Tires Wow. Re: [MBZ] Hillarycare. was: Barum Tires
+1 Go for it. I have been using this service for a decade and it rocks. My group uses age based fee structure because old folks have more issues. You still need normal coverage to deal with outside providers and hospital work. The positive is that you get service really fast and there is no rush to process you out of the room. My doc takes lots of time to talk things over, discuss options fully, and knows my issues fully. Not getting passed around to the bullpen. I call and get seen in 24 hours. He has full records of his work, instead of having to interpret what some other medico performed. clay - Original Message - From: "Dan Penoff via Mercedes"To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Cc: "Dan Penoff" Sent: Thursday, February 4, 2016 4:56:25 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Hillarycare. was: Barum Tires We are looking seriously at a "concierge" physician practice. Compare that with a nice little 1998 F150 regular cab shortbox 4X4 with a 4.3 V6 and a 5 speed manual transmission. I bought it for about $12K with about 100K miles on it. Over the next about 3 or 4 years, we spent about $10K on it and ended up selling it for about $3,500. Not a good deal in my opinion. Some of the cost was labour as I had to have a major (clutch replacement) repair in the dead of winter and paid to have it done at a shop. ($3600 or thereabouts). It also had a nice expensive set of tires on it when we sold it so we cannot hold that against it. Tires wear out and we sold the ones that we took off it as they were not worn out. My younger son was driving it and he insisted he had to have bigger better tires on it. He paid for them. Most of the other stuff was fairly routine like - starter, alternator, ball joints, shocks, brakes, plugs, wires etc. but it still seems like a lot over a short period of time and we only drove it about 45K miles before we sold it. Would have been a lot more if my son had not done much of the later stuff himself. (He was an apprentice then and is now a licenced mechanic.) We had some little plastic clips break on the back of the intake manifold that cause butterfly valves to open and close in the intake manifold. $2 in parts (for the clips) plus whatever it cost for the manifold gaskets BUT 2 days of work to take it apart and put it back together. Taking a chance here in that I might invite the gods of vehicle breakdowns here but my 2002 F150 Supercrew has been much better. I have had it 5 years or thereabouts. Had about 90K miles when I bought it in 2006 and now has about 150K miles. Have not spent as much on it. Brakes, tires, ball joints, plugs, etc. 3 ignition coils but two were might fault for not seeing what caused the first to go out. Axle seals on the rear end more than once but the big cost on that is the synthetic gear lube and it should be changed once in a while anyway. One power door lock actuator that gave up. [MBZ] PnP adventures
Summer has deserted us. Once more we are seeing October weather with temps around 11c. Succulent weather for a fish. Not good for hitting the PnP, but I had to see if I could source steel wheels for Gump to roll into greener pastures. I want the bundts I refinished with the new tires. So, I head over to the PnP. They have spruced it up since last I shopped. Only took a tire iron, since I only needed wheels. Driving up there, the outside temp shows 56f. FML. Raining, not drizzle, but real rain. Did not bring my wellies, since it was going to be only overcast. At least the entry fee has dropped to $1. Head out into the yard and Where the heck are all the wheels? Rack of tires all priced out expensive like. The rims are stacked up in the processing year looking like they will be used to make more car stands. Hmm. Lot of the cars in the yard have an excess of stands under them, unlike the tripod configuration last time I was in attendance. BUT WHERE ARE THE WHEELS? not a car there with wheels on them. They are being placed sans wheels now. poop Wander the yard anyway in hopes maybe a few spares survived the culling. Found one. A bundt. In good condition, but not another benz wheel to be found. Many a high end car is seen in the rows. Four jags, a 126, a 116, an SLC, 201, 124, high end audis, land rovers, spyders, and mid level sedans, not the low end junkers. Head scratcher this one. Decided I did not need yet another bundt, as I have enough for three cars. Better scrounge someplace else, this yard has become to deluxe for me. clay 1972 220D - Gump - She is green, simple and runs and runs 1995 E300D - Cleo - Used by the Queen of Denial POS 1987 SDL - Beware Nigerian Scammers ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] GUMP is DEAD
Finally got into her engine. She had a good life. While taking the head off, found that the front stanchion had cracked at the base and had been spewing a bit of oil around the valve springs. Ok, minor setback, but Rusty would have access to fresh. Was going to have to trade out the wrong head bolts Tom sent anyway. Needed hex, he sent star. While it was open, should replace the chain tensioners. Would have ample time to arrive while machine shop had the head. Lift head off and move it out into daylight to see what is what. Wipe up and look for where the gasket had gone bad. Yep, right between two and three, on three. Wear and missing a bit around the edge. Just enough for gases to flow into coolant. Damn. But no damage visible, so, ok, try to get gasket off and look around underneath. Wiping up the stay coolant and oil schmutz. Looks good so far. Minor rust on cylinder walls of three and two. Mental note for red scruffy pad to take care of that. Get some light on the whole thing and start seeing other issues. Cylinder walls are smooth, no cross hatch at all. And WTF, there is some crazing on top of #1. Crap! That is a CRACK! and there looks to be some stress wear on all the cylinders around where the pre-chamber divot is. POOP. No way will I be able to swing a rebuild. SWMBA is no at all please that I am even tinkering with Gump. Spent the rest of the day stripping out all usable parts for posting on CL. This guy claims to have run it dry, not to have stored it sans fluid for 30 years. The 240D guy also said his engine was in a 115, but was for a 123. The situation I am looking at is to have a side by side frankenstein transferal of power-plant into Gump. Being able to swap over all the needed under-hood goodies as needed. I figure the early edition 617 is equivalent to that which would have been ensconced in the 1976 300D bodied w115. Use the 615/616 engine mounts or something. There is ample room under the hood to fit the larger engine and supporting entrails. Would drop the ACC and Power steering, as those are not present in Gump anyway. What to do with the real radiator in Gump, as well as the oil cooler is of concern.
