SWMBA found out that replacing Gump with a vehicle of her standards
would be stupid cash. She wants less than 10 years old. I point out
that paying for college kid will reduce cash for such a purchase and
increase in insurance and such is major outlay for the next four
years. Cost of one or two payments on a supposed new car will put
Gump back on the road and no increase in insurance. Keep making one
new car payment each year and in four years, Gump is a very pretty car
indeed.

I picked up a set out of a hippie Vanagon years ago and did the

moisture and then parked them on the back deck for a week in the sun

night, then back out for sunning.

Stink is gone for the most part. cold wet days bring it back.

We adopted a baby back in March. He was born March 27th and he is

A month before, we sold our house and had purchased another one. We
were supposed to close March 29th on both of them. On the afternoon

Someone

My

Also, make sure the lights aren't made for British roads, I once

"consultant" told us that this was the best way to handle this

memory and Citrix so that I could "advise" management on what

Todd

Further complicated because the 32-bit Windows splits the memory
into a "user space" and a "kernel space". The user space is
available to applications and the kernel space is used by Windows
itself and device drivers. By default up to 2GB will be allocated
to user space. If you put the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file,
you change that to allow 3GB to be available to user
applications. This is often done with single-purpose machines
(servers) that do little else but run one piece of software, such
as SQL Server, in order to give more RAM to the software.

with raid and loaded up on hardwares. Supposed to have wiped drives,
but they only pulled the power cord to the drive, so it showed no OS/
Drive.

The thing was in perfect condition but for needing the darn password.
Found some help online for hacking that and now I have access to all
their AR/AP data and project/client files.

Maybe I post on wikileaks?

Probably just figure out how to make it a media server with those
terabyte raid drives

/3GB switch caused a lot of problems on a Citrix server one time

"consultant" told us that this was the best way to handle this
server and of course management said to do it. After that, I spend
a fair amount time learning all of the issues involving memory and
Citrix so that I could "advise" management on what really worked.

Further complicated because the 32-bit Windows splits the memory
into a "user space" and a "kernel space". The user space is
available to applications and the kernel space is used by Windows
itself and device drivers. By default up to 2GB will be allocated
to user space. If you put the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file, you
change that to allow 3GB to be available to user applications. This
is often done with single-purpose machines (servers) that do little
else but run one piece of software, such as SQL Server, in order to
give more RAM to the software.

Re: [MBZ] OT cheapest NAS

2010-12-05 Thread redghost
I am working on making an ubuntu box do NAS duty, sort of... in an
apple environment. Not being a good unix dork, I am having little luck.

The new aTV is not going to work but the older apple TV does have NAS
ability with video and iTunes. No RAID though. If you could source a
RAID external box to USB (though apple says that is only really for
service and diagnostics). It does have wireless G as well as 10/100
enet. which should allow ipod things to link fine. You can upgrade
the PATA drive (2.5" 250-320Gb from 40Gb).

Announced in September 2006 under the codename iTV, the Apple TV was
apple's official first foray into the set-top market (Prototypes of a
never-released PPC 603-based set top box from the late 1990s surface
from time to time). Running a closed, custom build of Mac OS X (based
on v10.4.7), the Apple TV allowed streaming of audio and video from
any iTunes-equipped computer on the local network, acting as a single
FrontRow-style interface for all computers in a household. In addition
to on-network audio and video, the Apple TV could also play select
YouTube videos (re-encoded in h.264) and movie trailers from Apple's
website. The Apple TV could be connected to any widescreen TV with
either HDMI or component video, supported both analog and digital
audio via RCA and optical S/PDIF outputs and supported resolutions
from 480p to 720p.

That G4 with server may be the best route. Get it on an airport
network, toss in a quartet of drives in a RAID array. Not sure if it
would feed hulu or youtube stuff, no netflix at all.

considering iphone or ipod touch.

I want to use it exclusively for audio and video storage.

Any such NAS I would want to be RAID 5 with alerts, preferably
audible or email for any problems.

I have available Winders 2003 server, but no motherboards that
support SATA drives. I have seen ads for inexpensive NAS and NAS
enclosures that are not capable of RAID 5. It seems to me that
buying a used SATA box with mb and memory may be an inexpensive way
to RAID5 using Server 2003R2

Any advice, experience is appreciated.

Is apple Tv a good starting place to go with the NAS?

I also have a good G4 I could put Mac server OS on.

Is there a good linux OS that I should look at?

Solution I am looking at is to use silver ducting tape on the

Surprisingly well. Using SATA drives, a DVD burner, NVidia PCIe, all
of it off the shelf. Onboard sound works, but the enet and video are
DOA. Using USB 802.11n to hook to the Airport Extreme. Dual Monitor

All System Updates load as if on a Mac Pro. All software sees it as a
Mac. Using the Dell, you can dual boot into either winblows or OS X.
I did not, but one could set up a disk for each OS.There is

Re: [MBZ] OT - #1 son success

2010-04-01 Thread redghost
Given that the JV did not expect to place well, Varsity came face to
face with hubris, and there were tears shed, it was quite the upset.
A bit of entitlement on the varsity side, and chagrin from JV. Now
the younger set has to step up and believe they really are that good.

Grand Canyon is doable in four minutes, but you should take a few
hours to really have a look. Maybe a burro ride to the bottom, or
check out the natives. Have some lunch.

Go for the local cuisine in Amarillo and Santa Fe. Nothing like good
BBQ in TX or southwest mexi food in Santa Fe. Check out the native
arts as well as the cultural doings in Santa Fe. Great jewelry as
well as art of the Georgia O'Keefe sort.

I am new to the mac thing, having
repaired my daughters flooded macbook and then fooling with
it a bit. I tried the other evening to load up Netflix
on it, and it kept telling me it couldn't work because I had
an old OS (didn't) and old version of Firefox
(didn't). Then I discovered I needed to load some MSFT
viewer as a plug-in, which I did about 10 times and it
wouldn't take. Another hour or so digging with google
to try to find out why this damn thing wouldn't show a movie
(Netflix "help" was useless), I found an obscure procedure
wherein I needed to go create some new user profile and then
try it again, which worked, finally. I am not sure who
is the bigger idiot in this exercise, Netflix or Apple (not
me) but it was a PITA. I did not go back to
the original user profile to see if by doing the download in
the new user "took" in the original user (it was just
loading a plug-in to FF and I guess Safari, nothing very
exotic). So 2 hours of screwing around with something
about mac's peculiarities finally got me to be able to see a
netflix movie at midnight by which time it was time to go to
bed.

"They are so easy" "Windows is abysmal" (OK, that is
true, but I can't see where mac is particularly better,
especially on some simple aspect like loading a plug-in in a
browser) THough I will admit that plugging it into the
Samsung LCD TV with a DVI<->HDMI cable took just a few
minutes of fooling with output resolutions to get a half
decent pic on the TV, which is what we wanted to watch a
movie on.

repaired my daughters flooded macbook and then fooling with
I did not go back to
the original user profile to see if by doing the download in
the new user "took" in the original user (it was just
loading a plug-in to FF and I guess Safari, nothing very
exotic). So 2 hours of screwing around with something
about mac's peculiarities finally got me to be able to see a
netflix movie at midnight by which time it was time to go to
bed.

"They are so easy" "Windows is abysmal" (OK, that is
true, but I can't see where mac is particularly better,
especially on some simple aspect like loading a plug-in in a
browser) THough I will admit that plugging it into the
Samsung LCD TV with a DVI<->HDMI cable took just a few
minutes of fooling with output resolutions to get a half
decent pic on the TV, which is what we wanted to watch a
movie on.

I was thinking of the crossing at Corvalis and doing 20. Not that

There are ways over the Cascades that are less unpleasant than the
Siskiyou Summit, e.g.
U.s. 199 from Eureka. Or if you're coming up I-5 from the general
direction of SF or LA, you can take US 97 at Weed, which goes NE up
towards Bend---then take US 20 pretty much due east until you meet up
with 84 at Boise.

To get from SF to Portland by the scenic route (US 101 the whole way)
is only about a 16 hour drive and avoids the Cascades entirely (and
the Coast Range too, if you take state highway 6 from Tillamook to
Portland). Then you have the incredibly scenic but also very fast
(the best of both worlds!) drive east from Portland along the Columbia
on I-84 to get wherever.

I'm in total agreement with Clay here, except that if you have the

I would not take a train from Chicago to NY -- that route is

Welcome, Hendrick. Having had the pleasure of visiting Down Under
several times, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how similar
the two countries are in many respects.

Your plan of flying to LA, staying a few days, then flying to
Chicago are probably the best. Rental cars in these cities are
plentiful and the market is competitive, so you could easily get a
mid-sized sedan for a couple hundred $USD a week with unlimited
mileage. That would allow you to wander freely without worry.

As for buying a car and then selling it, well, I can just imagine
the pitfalls - the main ones being establishing ownership (you're
not a US citizen) and insurance (can't register/title in most states
without proof of residency and insurance.) I think a rental is
going to be the easiest and best way to go. Look into an
international driver's license now - I used to have one when I
traveled extensively for business, and it allowed me to rent a car
in just about any country.

Check your maps - LaCrosse is on the western edge of Wisconsin, and
a long day's drive from Milwaukee or Chicago. You might want to
consider using Minneapolis/St. Paul for your base of operations
rather than Chicago. MSP is a wonderful city and has a lot to see
and do within a short distance. It's not the thriving metropolis
that Chicago is, but you could easily make a 2-3 day trip to Chicago
from there without a lot of effort.

Trains, while they are available, are somewhat iffy in this
country. The primary rail traffic is freight, and while there are
regularly scheduled passenger trains, their schedules are often
compromised by freight traffic. If you land in MSP, a train trip to
Chicago make a lot of sense, and would be a pleasant day trip (one
way) with some very nice scenery.

Public transportation in most larger cities is cheap and easy within
the city centers. If you go to Chicago you will pay a premium for
staying in the city, but that is offset by the proximity of so many
wonderful things to see and do, not to mention the ease of getting
around using public transportation.

You'll definitely need a car in LA, as the public transportation
there is pretty lousy, not to mention the logistics are so complex
due to the size of the area. You don't want to stay around LAX, as
that area is pretty nasty. Make a list of the things you want to do
and see and find a place to stay based on that. Driving in LA is a
real experience and can take far longer to get from point "A" to
point "B" than you could ever imagine, due to the congestion.

While you are probably working within a budget, treat this as if it
is the only chance you will have to visit here, and make the most of
it. You won't be disappointed. Even though my trips Down Under
were business, I had plenty of leisure time and I made the most of
it, and I am glad I did.

[MBZ] Never ending

2010-02-19 Thread Redghost
Decided to burp the cooling system on Gump in preparation for the head
work. Got her up on a ramp and lit her off. Bubbled away, expelling
air for about 45 minutes. Finally she was done and I capped the
radiator and rolled her off the ramps. Took her around the block to
allow the water pump to circulate stuff. No rise in temp, so I am
happy. Figure I should be able to park and let her rest until I get
parts.

Went out today to check under the hood. See oil level on flat ground
and how the coolant is settled in. Oil is overful by a half quart.
How in heck did that happen? Release the radiator cap and in nearly
pops off with so much air pressure behind it. Figure I have a good
exhaust leak into the coolant. Light off and take a look at the oil
pressure drop from 3 bar to nothing. WTF? I know it is full up, spin
the 730 cap and lots of blow by. Oil Pump went to heaven?

On Gump, which Marshall was quick to point out belongs to another set
of rules, the cleaning of the intake did make her drive a bit
better. I used brake cleaner while the intake was still on. I plan
to remove and replace the current intake with one I have thoroughly

So a diesel Toyota 4x4, basic model, big tires, maybe a mild lift,
winches, cowcatcher, and off-road stuff. Or maybe an older Hyundai,
they licensed the Mitsu vehicles, which seem pretty sturdy, and
built them for awhile until they got their act together to engineer
their own. I don't think I would want to rely on a Benz unless I

too much fuel left behind.

She is "practical" and just does not have a passionate bone in her
body about material things. I think she had a need for new car once
in her life and this fit her penny pinching needs. It is stable
enough to drive, had some bells and whistles. Not a Benz by a long
shot in any quality or form. It gets her from point A to B. Reliable
and the dealer will do the shop work. I am not going to touch the
thing. Uses 87 octane and dino, so she saves cash that way. The
mileage is suck, but I guess you trade off. There is a diesel engine
for it. I just have to source it from Australia. Drop that baby in
five years from now.

I had pointed out that the kids are getting larger every day, and I am
getting less willing to bend myself into pretzel to sit in a car with
her. So she gets a car that will allow legs to not clot up while on

Excellent materials and interior build quality, though, at least in

[MBZ] SWMBA drops Cleo

2010-02-14 Thread Redghost
Have been drug out to the car dealers since Gump is on injured
reserve. SWMBA wants a "reliable" back up car she is willing to
drive. Turns out that is Cleo, the E300D, and I have to sell cars.

Spent a few weekends out on test drives. I thought the 2008 CDI would
have been great. She was not interested in the $48k price. She got
very serious about the TDI jetta wagon. 47+ MPG highway. A bit
cramped and premium price for diesels. This weekend it was Toyota and
Honda. Nothing really jumps out from either marque. Basic econobox
bubbles.

She wants a "nice" car. I needed to find one able to fit an old man
and two teen boys. Youngest prone to motion sickness. I got back
seat duty checking legroom and propensity for jiggle and jostle. Hard
to find a car now in her price area that is not as smooth as a paint
mixer. And the build quality or choice of materials is pretty
lackluster compared to the Benz.

She tried an 08 Accord. It was on special for the weekend sale. It
was pretty loaded, but very riced out. Spoiler, ricer wheels, leather
was not cared for, plastic had been scuffed. Heavy use of the Smoker
B Gone spray to mask the cigarette residue. And the carpet and trunk
liner where just crap compared to what was used in the 95 civic she
used to own. Even her 87 Acura was really nice in comparison. This
thing was "certified" but rode like a buckboard. Sales boy said Honda
builds them like that so you can feel the road. I figured that a few
miles in the back of that thing and kid would have lost his lunch.

At that point, I just figure she needed anything that was going to
roll and meet her price point. Off to Huyndai for a ride in what
could not be any worse than what Honda and Toyota had to offer in
build materials. She looked at the Sonata. Drove it and was happy,
but the ride is vomit inducing from the back seat. Used car, but not
worth having to worry about the technicolor rainbows as you drove. I
said to look at the Genesis. She was not going to spend that much on
that quality of a marque.

SWMBA wandered around and I pointed the sales guy at the Azera. He
found one that had been used as Demo and was selling as new with all
the warranty and such. She liked it enough to make the poor sales
people dance around while we just looked at them from the other side
of the desk and muttered when they made offers. She made them go up
the line to the store manager to get the most screaming deal they
would be willing to make. They included the first 50k miles of
service free, increased the warranty to 120 months/100k miles bumper
to bumper and came in under $20K.

I now have to prep the E300D for back up use, and she is driving this
boat. Sort of craptacular, but no worse than a Government Motors or
other mid size sedan on the market in that price range. Will be worth
nothing in 10 years, but she will be happy until then. And I still
get to drive Gump.

Yeah, but I have no cherry picker or place to do the work. The
blower/

dash job was at FiL using his shop and three of us swinging wrenches.
I am not going to drive Gump to Vancouver to get to the shop, nor can
I make it to Arlington where my BiL does his work. He likes to build
jeep crawlers, and would be great for this job.

The r&r was to replace the head gasket; the DPO put the green
stuff in the radiator, and whenever it got good and hot it would
weep out the passenger side.

For reassembly I invested in some metric all-thread and rounded
the top ends nicely; one piece at each end of the block, on
opposite sides. Make sure that the all-thread is at least 2-3
inches longer than the longest head bolt.

BTW, pulling the head is a GREAT opportunity to replace the timing
chain, if needed. Even on a gasser, it can make an improvement.

Take a look at Cadillac boot and shoe care. I find it is superb at
keeping leather items in top condition. Does not do miracles, but
does keep it good as when first applied. Best to give the item a coat
when brand new, or as close as possible and it remains looking that
good.

Message-ID:
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed; delsp=yes

THe 28 year old leather seats in my 300SD are in pretty good shape but
are beginning to dry out even with annual leatherique applications.

The problem is, the finish on the top of the leather keeps the
leatherique from penetrating, except in cracks and wear spots.

What seems to work very well is applying neat's foot oil to the
unfinished back sides of the leather, which I've done with great
results indeed to the top of the rear seat, and the skirts of both
front and rear seats. THese areas are now very supple, even though
the seatback especially had gotten very hard and brittle. The leather
there soaked up a huge amount of oil--three heavy brush applications.
I'd now like to do the same to the backrests and seats themselves, but
don't know how to get at them as the padding is in the way. Has
anyone ever done this? Can the padding be removed and replaced? Or
would it all have to be resewn, which I'm reluctant to do for fear of
further damaging the leather?

Thanks!

Dan
