You've got a two pronged problem, its relatively heavy for its size and you
need to ship it pretty far. This is one of the reasons you're usually better of
buying something like an alternator locally. If its a reman you get the same
alternator, you don't pay shipping and you don't have to pay to return the
core...

I have had alternator problems on our '89 Chevy Beauville (the BRV). The
first time, because I could not figure out how to remove the serpentine
belt, I had a shop about 20 miles away replace the bad one with a rebuilt
from NAPA. It failed with a bad rear bearing. I took the BRV back and they
replaced it with another rebuilt from NAPA. After a while, it failed (I
don't remember the cause).

In the interim, I discovered how to remove the BRV's serpentine belt, so
I replaced the second bad one with a rebuilt from O'Reilly. So far, it
has held up.

When I came upon this situation at the end of my conversion of our
'82 240D to a 240D/3.0, I opted to buy new calipers and, since we were
going to be moving, threw the old ones away.

I did not know at that time about Kroil. Have you tried Kroil and
compressed air?

Better would be Kroil and brake fluid by connecting them to the car's
hydraulic line or to a pressure pack (which might be a grease gun -- fill
the caliper with brake fluid, put a zerk on the supply hole, and pump
grease into the caliper, which can get up to 10,000 psi.).

Yes, grease gun and a C clamp, works fairly well.
Do one side, put puck back in, then do other side.
You can't have any air in the system, it's too compressible.

2020-02-14 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
A simple but viable human model of transmission is available in the
computer world.
Look at how quickly a computer virus spreads from a single infection...
sent unknown to everyone on your email short list... who then sends it to
all their "special friends"... [ie personal contact]...
Within a very short time, hundreds of thousands of computers are infected
and servers are down...

This weaponized virus has much the same transmission.

[MBZ] W124 606 valve spring replacement

2020-02-14 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Anyone ever replace valve springs? I am putting some stiffer ones on due to
high egp with the compound turbos. What is the preferred tool? I assume I
just rotate the piston to the top to prevent the valves from falling in.

I borrowed a valve spring compressor from someone on this list years ago,
probably for the M117, but it might have been for the OM617. It was a
generic tool, and I had to "beef it up" a bit, but it worked. I returned it

When they suggested it, I had a racing shop replace the valve springs on
my '59 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spyder Veloce with Jaguar springs. That
enabled the valves to close more quickly and thus the engine could be run
to higher RPM.

I sold it to a friend who later told me the stronger springs had

Hot rodding for more power usually has side effects. The fellows who
change the chip to make the big Ford F250 and F350 diesel trucks make
more boost to get more power, will stretch the head bolts after a while
and cause the headgaskets to leak. It is an expensive fix. They don't
want to give up the extra power, so they use expensive head stud kits to
retain the heads. I am not sure what breaks next but it will be
something. Probably main and rod bearings.

In nuclear devices, fission is accomplished by each split atom giving off
two neutrons.

A long time ago, I saw a movie where a fellow had a room with a window.
He filled the room with cocked/loaded mousetraps and ran two test cases:

- In the first, each mousetrap had one pingpong ball
resting on the bail.

- In the second, each mousetrap had two pingpong balls
resting on the bail.

Each time he held the door open and tossed in one pingpong ball.

In the first case, a single mousetrap would be sprung and throw its
pingpong ball up into the air. When that pingpong ball fell and hit
another trap, another pingpong ball would be thrown in the air. It
was a long time before all traps had been sprung or the ball fell
onto a trap which had already been sprung.

In the second case, the trap springing rate increased very quickly and
the room was filled with pingpong balls in the air. It took only a few
seconds before the action was done.

I wonder if it is now on youtube ...

My '83 240D once went through 5 reman alternators before I got one that
lasted. I'm not 100% sure but it might have been a dodgy battery killing
alternators or maybe a series of bad alternators ruined the battery. Anyway I
replaced the battery with the 5th alternator and it lasted until the car
finally gave up the ghost.
When buying reman alternators definitely buy from somewhere that gives a

Re: [MBZ] W124 300D alternator replacement?

2020-02-14 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
I called autohausaz and they told me to collapse the original manufacturer’s
box (which is required to be returned) and try to stuff both the collapsed box
and alternator into a priority mail flat rate which is what I did and it all
just barely fit! The alternator in the manufacturer’s box would not fit into
the flat rate box as is.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: OT Virus

2020-02-14 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
It's a respiratory virus. The reason the cases went up was because they
included diagnoses established by CT scan, rather than just the antibody
test (could be DNA but ELISA is more common for screening). Anyway it is
causing pulmonary findings on CT scan, aka pneumonia often enough to bump
the numbers up significantly and is killing some of those people through
respiratory failure. There are hundreds of viruses with tropism for the
respiratory tract; this one is severe in an as-yet poorly defined subset of
people. It is far more contagious than SARS, which is why it will probably
be visiting an ER near each of us this year or next. The superspreader
refers to spread before the source is symptomatic; they might have had a
simple cold or no symptoms at all before falling ill later and being
diagnosed. There seems to be a prodromal mild phase followed by a more
serious later phase with pneumonia.

FYI:

In medicine, a prodrome is an early sign or symptom (or set of signs and
symptoms), which often indicate the onset of a disease before more
diagnostically specific signs and symptoms develop. It is derived from
the Greek word prodromos, meaning "running before". Prodromes may be
non-specific symptoms or, in a few instances, may clearly indicate a
particular disease, such as the prodromal migraine aura.

For example, fever, malaise, headache and lack of appetite frequently
occur in the prodrome of many infective disorders.

I assume they are not too much different than a 603, only x2 and
probably smaller.   Yes, observe firing order. check for tdc by pushing
valve down to hit piston before you take the keepers off.  take cams
off, wiring TC to sprockets.  Mind the keys

You can do 2 pistons at the same time (8 valves)  then rotate 120º repeat.

Big problem is a valve spring compressor.   THe MB special tool is
stupid expensive. (At least for 603)   I never changed springs but did
replace valve seals in situ.

Anyone ever replace valve springs? I am putting some stiffer ones on
due to

high egp with the compound turbos. What is the preferred tool? I assume I
just rotate the piston to the top to prevent the valves from falling in.

When they suggested it, I had a racing shop replace the valve springs on
my '59 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spyder Veloce with Jaguar springs. That
enabled the valves to close more quickly and thus the engine could be run
to higher RPM.

I sold it to a friend who later told me the stronger springs had
stretched the valve stems and the valves started leaking. He had
the head redone with new valves and standard springs.

Re: [MBZ] W124 300D alternator replacement?

2020-02-14 Thread Clay via Mercedes
I liked supporting the local repair shop over FLAPS or online reman. The list
had been bashing Bosch alternators at the time and I had a qualified shop in
town, so I took it to them for fixing. Cost was a bit more than commercial
reman, but having a local place I could return a messed up product to for
warranty was comforting. I think the difference in price was $15 and no need
to ship or haul a core around.

The last four alternators I came across at the PnP were tested at FLAPS and
some were viable. The others turned out to need a cheap part to put back into
service. Probably should have been rebuilt, but for the money they were ok as
spares.

Re: [MBZ] OT Virus

2020-02-14 Thread Clay via Mercedes
My understanding of contagion for this virus is that it is rather hardy and
able to survive on surfaces for a while without a host. The thing seems
airborne as well, spreading through sneezes and coughing, as well as actual
touch. Food handlers, social workers, care providers, anybody with a runny
nose in close proximity will gladly shed vectors. I hate sitting in a room
with the old folks edjumakation courses, as they hack and snortle for 75
minutes. Heaven forbid one should sneeze on the coffee urn or cookie tray!

Most recent news report had one of the early evacuees on the State Department
747 cleared quarantine period of 14 days and then fell ill. I think it is
either on base in TX or CA.

Compressed air is typically less than 125 PSI. Pretty wimpy
compared to common brake pressure of 400-500 PSI or hard braking
that can generate over 1000 PSI. So if the piston was stuck
enough to not move with brake line pressure, it sure won't move
with typical shop compressed air.

Re: [MBZ] W124 606 valve spring replacement

2020-02-14 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Yeah. By the time you have a custom exhaust, intake, two turbos,
wastegates, a hot injection pump, an 87 wagon with a transplanted '99 606
and interior from a 95, with a fully rebuilt rear suspension with half
shafts, new sls, 500e/600sl brakes, a 500e master and a dual diaphragm
vacuum booster from an r129, rebuilt wavetrac diff, 16x8 15 hole wheels,
new dash and vacuum actuators, new wheel bearings, new front suspension,
facelift hood and fenders, new headlights from Latvia, matte black paint,
repaired rear quarter window sill rust, new factory door seals, new
headliner, new AC everything, 500e front seats with new leather covers and
transplanted non memory motors and seat bases, new heater core blah blah
blah, you are sort of over the economic arguments for and against the car.
If it needs new rod bearings at some point, it will likely get forged rods
and 16:1 pistons also. Doubling rated power output is always going to have
a price. So does driving a fully updated stock w124 of any type.
