[MBZ] 124 Control Arm Bushings

2005-11-17 Thread John Peterson
I brought my '91 300D 2.5 74k miles in to the dealer to diagnose a slight
clunking sound in the front end over uneven pavement. They say the noise is
the control arm bushings, which sounds reasonable, but they say that they
have to change the ball joints, that it is all one piece. Total price for
job, $900 including 4 wheel alignment. I didn't want to let them do the
work until I had a second opinion.

Is this true that they have to change the ball joints along with the control
arm bushings? They said the ball joints had no play at all in them.

Re: [MBZ] 124 Sway Bar Bushings?

2005-11-18 Thread John Peterson

Thank you all for your comments- wow, what a response! Here is an update.

The sound can be described as the kind of sound / clunk that one would get
by taking a rubber mallet and hitting the underside frame of the car while
driving. It makes this sound when EITHER wheel hits an uneven patch of
road. It is a kind of thump and hollow sound.

Another obversation- the car tracks perfectly, as good as it gets.

I'm going to go ahead and change the sway bar bushing out- they look a bit
loose. Can I just take the bar off for a test? The bushings are cheap, but
take a week to get.

Thank for continued help. John

new control arms and bushings but I doubt this at 74k) I am trying to get

There seems to be a rush to condemn the ball joints now. I've NEVER
experienced clunks on bumps at low speeds when the ball joints were
bad (but if they are REALLY bad they could I suppose). That HAS been a
consistent presenting symptom with bad sway bar bushings. Bad ball
joints (as well as bad rear suspension links) do permit the front end to
seem nervous requiring a lot of attention when driving at highway
speeds. In my experience, ball joints outlast sway bar bushings by at
least 3:1. Control arm bushings and ball joints usually last AT LEAST
200kmi miles (and can last a lot longer if you drive 20+kmi a year).
Early sway bar bushings however, often failed after 4-6 years and even
the revised ones might not be expected to last more than 100-150kmi. I
have revised bushings on two cars, but they don't have even 75kmi on
them and that's true of MOST people that have replaced the bushings on
124s.

[MBZ] Resolved: Sway Bar Bushings on 124 (Clunk)

2005-11-22 Thread John Peterson
After my dealer quoted $900 for new control arms and bushings, I took my
issue (a clunking from the front end on bumps, when uneven pavement on
either tire) to the list for a second opinion. Advice from many was to
check the sway bar bushings.

Well, tonight I pulled the bar off and the bushings slid right off- very
loose. Drove the car, CLUNK ELIMINATED. Those were the problem.

Saved me $900.

I really like my MB dealer here -- Carriage House of New London CT, and
think they are very honest. BUT they can't diagnose better than the
collective knowledge of this brainy list.

Re: [MBZ] Opinions (was: WAY too much for this car)

2005-11-22 Thread John Peterson
Part of the fun of ebay is that some cars go for too little and some go for
too much. It's all about what we think the item is worth (and being lucky.)
I looked for my '91 for nearly a year on ebay, and in the end, price,
condition, honest dealer, color, mbtex, 2.5 turbo all aligned and I won it.

But in my opinion ebay gives (usually) a good take on what national value is
on an item. But anyone notice that the MB diesels get way over book most of
the time? It is a specialty car, not a '95 Taurus, and because they are
tough to find they demand a premium on ebay.

What I do find funny about the ebay MB's is how CONDITION dictates the
price-- more so than in any other selling venue. I have seen identical mile
and year cars go for 1/5 the price of the same car cream puff.

But it is fun watching them- Dwight Giles (lister and neighbor) and I want
to start a sales business selling MB diesels. We won't quite our day jobs,
however!

[MBZ] Storing for Winter

2005-11-24 Thread John Peterson

I bet there are lots of good opinions on this one- but here goes.

What is the best procedure for storing a diesel?

Will the tires develop flat spots if I leave it parked 3 months in the
garage this winter?
Should I take the battery into the warm house or leave it in the cold garage
with a trickle charger.
I bought a $130 Noah fabric MB cover at the dealer- considering the
beautiful fit and the fabric used, it is a real bargain. I will cover the
car in the garage because I always seem to hit the car with something.

Thanks for the advice- this is my first storage of a car.

Hi,All.
This is an OT request for info about Stereo speaker repairs. I have an
old, circa 1980, pair of made in Poland stereo speakers that need
repair/replacement of the foam plastic suspension stuff around the
speaker cone. The speaker cone itself is in as new condition, the foam has
partly separated and is very fragile. These 10 speakers have a mount
(body?) ring of machined aluminum about 1 thick. Questions, are these
worth fixing, does anyone still do this? or should I just buy new
speakers?
As you can tell, I'm not at all knowledgeable about audio bits and

On the way home I made up my mind that it didn't matter if I lost the

I foolishly passed on a nice '84 2.2l 5spd last summer just because it

one) that was second owner.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think I'll drive down Friday night and

Ya'll may remember some months ago the end rusted off my front

fix, and was one that has reduced many otherwise good drivers to
parts cars. Thanks to Loren Faeth, of this list, I was able to get
mine repaired by Doug at Import Auto Limited in Ames, Iowa (515 296
2723) for $466. He cut off the end of the bar where it is thick,
then machined a new end which slides over the bar. He ground flats in
the bar first, and secured the new tip with six set screws and JB
Weld (inside the collar), then replaced with new Mercedes bushings,
bushing washers, and nut. Handles as new. Since the break was at the
relatively small diameter tip and the repair is on the thick part of
the stabilizer with a good thick machined collar, I think it should
hold up fine. Doug, the shop owner, engineered the fix for his daily
driver 126, and says it's held fine for 7 months and counting. Time
will tell, but I'm very pleased. If you have a car in a similar
condition, I'm guessing Doug would sell you the machined rod end, if
you wanted to attempt cutting the stabilizer yourself, but he says be
aware the stabilizer is harder than anything he's ever cut before,
and is quite a challenge.

Thanks, Loren, for the referral!

On a diesel, probably. If it's a gasoline engine car, it would be much
trickier. I doubt that's likely to help, though. At most it won't do
much more than you could do by warming the key with a pocket lighter and
then sticking it in the lock.

Has he tried getting a new VIN-cut key from the dealer, and attempting
to turn the lock with it? My lock turned *much* easier with a new key.
It may give him the extra edge he needs to get the tumbler turned to
position 1. All the usual tricks, sliding the key in and out a little,
jiggling it, etc. apply. Otherwise, it's time to start drilling.

[MBZ] It's a Gas

2006-01-09 Thread John Peterson
So, don't beat me up too hard. I bought a '91 190E 2.6 gasser this week. It
has 99k. Everything works on it.

I haven't picked it up yet. I plan to use it winters while the diesel is
hibernating from the road salt here in RI.

It is a 201 with one owner- all records, original paint. Accident cracked
front bumper plastic, which was replaced. Owner showed all body panels and
matching numbers etc.

It has the blue MBtex which I love- and I hear that the 2.6 is a reliable
and powerful motor. Yes, I know there is little space under the hood and
that the water pumps tend to fail with 120k on them.

Does anyone have a gasser 190? What experiences have you had? I wanted a
diesel, but the diesel 190's go for foolish prices and I just can't afford
them.

See photos at http://www.immersionstudio.com/190.asp

Anyways, it is a benz and that means fun driving and pulling it apart.

Re: [MBZ] glue oozing mirror

2006-01-09 Thread John Peterson
I had a friend with a 1999 Jetta that oozed from the bottoms of the door. I
guess it was the sound insulation. He had it drip on his date's new heels,
and that was the end of the date.

He phoned the VW dealership and they said Oh, that was a problem with the
1999 Jettas. VW the problem immediately and only a few cars were affected.

I bet him $5 that they would say to me the same thing if I said I had a
2004. SO, I called the next day with an obviously different voice. Guess
what, same line from the dealership. Oh, that was a problem with the
2004's. They fixed the problem...

I don't trust any one of them.

I justify my tool purchases with logic like this.

Happy New Year!

[MBZ] Tighten Trans Cooler lines?

2006-01-11 Thread John Peterson
I have a pretty good leak in my garage of trans. fluid that is coming from
the supply hose to the radiator. It is coming from the joint where the hose
meets the metal tubing. Would it be okay to try to tighten it or does this
mean the rubber hose is shot. Will I hurt anything by tightening it...I
figure it is worth a try.

Possibly because the 2.5 turbo is the best diesel Mercedes ever made.

The 602.96 engine was about the most powerful (re displacement) of the
mechanical injection diesel engines while still remaining just plain
reliable. No serious flaws. I don't like the EGR control system (used in
the '90s) and all 124s have the problem of having to remove the entire
dash, steering wheel and console to replace the AC evaporator and the
outrageously expensive Nippondenso compressor, but the '90-'93 124.128
300D 2.5s are really VERY refined cars. Many of the things that were
introduced in '94 to the 124 E300D (like the biodegradable wiring
harness, the tuned resonance air intake system, the complex afterstart
glow system, etc.) detracted from long term reliability and made repair
more complex than it should have been.

All of that said, I still prefer driving my '87 300TD with it's OM603.96
engine on the highway and while many, many fewer than half of the
OM603.96 engines developed cracked heads - but that potential problem IS
still real. That extra 25 hp really makes a difference even in a car
that weights 660 lb more than my 190D 2.5t. The difference between the
weight of an '87 300D and a '90s 300D 2.5 is MUCH smaller so the 300D
with the 6 cylinder engine is a ROCKET by comparison.

The loose lugs could be attributed to simple negligence, bad work habits,

Considering what could have happened they ought to buy your sister off

My younger sister has a 2000 Volvo which she brought in for service at
the

Volvo dealership. They told her she needed a new rim, so she said okay
and paid up the $400 to put it on and balance (existing tire)

They let her leave. Down the road she hears a dragging sound and brings
the

car back. She brings it in and they said oh, we forgot to put your sway
bar on DUH

But the story gets better. They put the sway bar on and she went on the
highway. The car did a nose dive and she went off the road. She watched
her wheel roll down the highway lane.

State cops come, tow the car back to the Volvo dealership (not too
bright)
and they say You must have had an accident, it wasn't the wheel's
fault.

So the insurance company says they'll pay for the wheel and they will sue
the dealership (so my sister doesn't have to.) THEY hire an investigator
who notices that not only were the lug nuts not tightened but IT WAS A
USED,
DEFECTIVE WHEEL. Now remember, she had paid $400 for a New Volvo
Wheel.

So for those of you that remember my transmission overfill story from
last

year- combine that with this and MAKE SURE you check EVERYTHING before
leaving any dealership!!

My GUESS is that the insurance co would only be interested in the fraud as
an supporting element of their case, and not as a standalone issue. Might
be worth some digging, as it sounds like you've got a clear case for fraud,
with independent data that someone else has collected for you and that you
might be able to use. I'm not a lawyer, but triple damages and then
possibly punative on top of that might be meaningful.

Glad that nobody was hurt. Freakin' weasels at that dealer (not that most

[MBZ] Chirp Chirp

2006-04-19 Thread John Peterson
Has anyone had a bird chirp like sound combined with the sound of marbles in
a can coming from the front of the car near the serp. belt? Here is the
description- when first started the sound is definitely there- when the car
is warm, no sound at all.

If I spray a bit of belt dressing it disappears and becomes silent- but
comes back when it cools down and I restart.

I am correct to suspect water pump, tensioner, belt ?? Any advice how to
find out which one without buying all of them? I have the belt.

This squeak's frequency sounds like the frequency of the engine rotation
at
idle. When I give it just the slightest bit of fuel, it goes away. When I
let

off the fuel it resumes as soon as the engine is at idle. I've determined
it's not the AC compressor

You slopped some coolant on the belt. Just hose it off.

[MBZ] Parts

2006-06-02 Thread John Peterson
I had no luck taking off my shutoff valve- without taking off the alda
or intake. I'm not daring enough to take off the alda or intake, so I'm
going to take it to the shop. We also have a new baby and I just don't
have the time this month.

I had already ordered the following parts, if anyone is interested- my
mechanic won't put them on for me:

For Sale:
  Shutoff Valve $35.77
  Idler Pulley $38.33
  Idler Shock $41.32

All new, in box. Make me fair offer and I'll mail to you.

Any offers? Anyone need the above?

Re: [MBZ] Jeep Adding Diesel Grand Cherokee

2006-06-04 Thread John Peterson
I never owned a new car- but I've had 16 used ones. If I had a new one
I wouldn't be rigging a piece of string to my shutoff valve and feeding
it through the radiator grill so that I can shut the car off without
opening the hood (my shutoff valve is spoiled.)

But new cars are no fun, they just smell nice for a year or so. I had
the satisfaction of changing my idler pulley and shock yesterday. Now I
wouldn't be doing that on a new one!

Also, buying used ones has been much cheaper for me over the years- and
has allowed this poor man to drive some very nice cars, albeit broken in.

[MBZ] Wheel Paint

2006-06-09 Thread John Peterson
Those are good prices- I did all 4 wheels this year, prep is key as with
any paint job. Light coats of the paint, sanding slightly with 400
between. Then the lacquer, 4 coats and sand before the last one. I
think they turned out perfect- hard pressed to see the difference from
factory.

Durability is unknown at this point, they have lasted 6 mo so far.

  The

In the past, listers have given good reports about both products. Most

[MBZ] Sensor in Injection Pump '90 300D

2005-09-30 Thread John Peterson
I've been trying to diagnose a loss in boost in my '90 300D. I brought it
to the indie who found that (1) a vacuum tranducer is out and (2) he thinks
a sensor on the injection pump is giving no electronic signal to the ECU.
He says a 2k injection pump is necessary.

Is there any more economical way of changing this sensor? Rebuilt IP?
Seems hard to believe it would be so buried inside that it can't be replaced

John,

I'm not an expert on the 2.5T engine controls, but I have a hard time
buying the claim that an injection pump sensor is bad. I believe the
only sensor on those pumps is a rack position sensor, and I think
there's a procedure in the manual explaining how to test it. If it's
bad, yes it requires pump disassembly to repair, or basically
installing a rebuilt pump () or a used pump (only $$$). I'd make
VERY sure that is the problem before doing the swap, and even then I'd
most likely just get a used pump rather than a $2k new/rebuilt. Rusty
might be able to get you a rebuilt unit cheaper, if you do need one.

If you have the time, I would swap pumps between your 2 cars and see
if the problem follows the pump or not. It could be done in one
weekend as DIY.

Here's a question about sucking oil-how does one tell when the oil is done
sucking when the inside of your oile tube is black?

Listening at the dipstick tube, you will hear the same sound you got when
when you were a kid, sucking the last drop from a root-beer float. Sluuurp.

Even with M1 in a gasser, you can't see much in the tube.

which we replaced, and he thinks the injection pump sensor is bad as

Today he phoned to say that they put the transducer in and that there is
now 12 pounds of boost, up from 2. He says that the correct amount is 14
pounds. He thinks the sensor in the IP could account for the slight lack
of measureable boost. I want to be REAL sure before spending on a sensor
replacement in the IP, which requires opening up and recalibration, I
think.

I'm going to drive the car this week- which might tell me more than boost
pressures!

PS, did anyone get a MB E320 Diesel brochure in the mail? I got one
today- addressed to me, a beautiful brochure for a car I can't afford. I
wish I knew how knew I had a diesel!

The difference in pressure between 12 vs 14 psi of boost will result in
almost NO difference in power (and is well within spec even for a NEW
car). Sounds more like the boost isn't reaching the ALDA or the ALDA
isn't responding with enhanced fuel delivery.

Any where between 800 millibar (11.6 psi) and 950 millibar (13.8 psi) is
the range of boost under FULL LOAD at any engine rpm between 2000-4800.
Boost will be lower to considerably lower at less than full load, so
won't be meaningful except at FULL LOAD.

It's outlined in section 9-0500 of the OM602/603 engine manual, the 201
126 and 124 CDs.

Boy, did I miss the turbo. It is hard to believe how much the turbo helps

At least we know that 12 PSI is okay- and the lesson learned is that the ECU
can shut down and cut boost if ONE of the transducers is bad or even
intermittent.

Anyway, I don't think there is an IP sensor issue- it was probably the
transducer all along. Well, it is time to put some miles on this bird- it

Re: [MBZ] Why are the newer (96-99) benzes prone to rust?

2005-10-31 Thread John Peterson
I think the trouble is that MB is trying to hit a different price point- and
killing their brand in the process.

Unionized, quality labor would put the MB back where it was in price -- here
is an example. My 300D cost 41,000 in 1991. A new CDI? 55k. 15 years of
inflation have happened in other cars but not in MB. Remember how much a
Corolla cost in '91??? Oh what a feeling, $7995. Price a new one today!

Having said all this, I couldn't afford a new CDI or a 300D 2.5 in 1991 for
that matter. I have to wait 15 years for them to come down to my price
range. The good news is that the older ones (123, 124) are built in a way
that even after 15+ years they are WONDEFUL and reliable, and a GREAT used
car buy.

I think you have to add the workforce and the short term profit
demands to the list of responsible parties. From the overpaid union
guy who can't spell the part he puts on the car (and doesn't care
ifit's there or not) to the share holders who demand a higher profit
each quarter, to the management who let's all this happen, ther's
enough blame to go around.
We, at least, vote with our pocket books and feet, and buy old MBs.
I disagree about the 60's to 70's cars - they needed valve jobs around
50k, and it was rare to see one on the streets with over 100k.

You are experiencing the typical life of a Benz exhaust system -- at
least 150,000 miles. Diesel engines produce somewhat less acid due to
leaner mixtures and better combustion. I don't know if the soot is
protective, I'd guess not, actually.

It WILL greatly shorten the life of the muffler if the soot is thick
enough to catch fire, by the way -- I fried an exhaust on the Volvo
that way due to a leaking turbo.

I'll check the return line this evening - it sure looked like it was coming
from the GP - it was built up there around the plug in what appeared to be
a mix of oil residue smelling of diesel. Enough of it to flow down to the
floor under the car, with a viscosity more of diesel than motor oil.

I might have to just clean the engine off to see where it is coming from.

The return line should be easy to check, by just looking for evidence of

Re: [MBZ] are 190s as generally bad as I've heard?

2006-01-22 Thread John Peterson
My experience in the reviews of 190's is that the owners, ( many of whom buy
the 190 because of the cheaper price and have had been entry-level) complain
about the high price of parts and repairs.

I think it is more an issue that they haven't paid for european parts
before- or MB service. I don't think that the 190 requires any more service
or repairs than the 123 or 124's IMHO

Re: [MBZ] new addition

2006-02-05 Thread John Peterson
Sunil, a WONDERFUL car. I'd do the ATF with Mobil 1, big difference when
cold. Fuel filters are easy to get at and take 15 minutes to change. I
have started mine in 5 below here in Rhode Island with no block heater used.
Just an incredible, reliable, FUN car.

Just picked up my new-to-me 1992 300D. Drove it 100 miles back to my
house

without incident. A few questions:

1) For beginning maintenance issues - oil, air, ATF, fuel filters and
fluids; diff fluid. Glow plugs are good. What else am I forgetting?

2) Will 123 parts work in a 124? I'm talking about oil, fuel, or air
filters, as well as radiator hoses. Also, is it the same ATF? ...

3) I plugged in the block heater for 1.5 hours, and when I turned on the
car I didn't notice a difference in startup temperature. Temp outside was
24 F. Is this normal or abnormal?

What else am I forgetting?

Thanks!

[MBZ] Isolating small oil leak around radiator

2006-02-25 Thread John Peterson
Friends, my 300D came out of winter hibernation for a day yesterday and I
noticed a small drip of oil (not trans fluid) from the bottom driver's side
of the Behr radiator. It is very hard to see the origin of the drip- as
chasing oil that is falling by gravity and wind is never easy. Here is my
question for the savants of this group. What are likely places for this
leak on that side of the radiator or nearby so that I can clean things and
see where this is coming from?

As a side note, one month of sitting in 10-40 degree temps here in Rhode
Island and the MB fired after one glow and first compression turnover. I
have had gas cars that won't start if left for 2 weeks.

Re: [MBZ] W124 Motor Mounts

2006-02-25 Thread John Peterson
Larry, the easiest way to tell on a 2.5 is to check if there is any
vibration at idle in the wheel - along with a shake a shutdown. Dwight
Giles, a fellow lister and neighbor has a 1990 with 130k miles and I have a
1991 with 77k. His had vibration at idle and a harsh shutdown. Changing
the mounts out made a HUGE difference- to the point that there is no shutoff
vibration at all, and it would be nearly impossible to tell you're in a
diesel at idle.

My experience and in talking with others is that the mounts tend to last
about 80-100k miles. Unless they actually separate, however, you won't
notice striking symptoms, just a degradation. The 2.5 with working mounts
should feel, in terms of vibration, very much like a 4cyl gasser. At least
Dwight's does!

Hope this helps something.

PS, changing them is a breeze. I have the procedure in pdf if you need it.

That is my take- with new mounts there is no shutdown shake -- mine, with

shutdown. Amazing mounts, like shocks, really.

in shutdown and idle. Car now shuts down like a gasser.

40-45mph? Good lord I don't even think about 5th until I'm above 55. In
actuality getting on the highway I don't get into 4th until around 50.

Supposedly this car has like year old injectors which I think is
possible, it sounds a bit more like a big rig diesel than either my 240D
or 300TD did. It did quiet down a bit with Mobil 1 in the crankcase.
I need to do return lines, in fact I put together a list on Rusty's site
today (BTW the new site looks great guys but Hursty, if you're gonna say
between you gotta have 2 numbers, between 30 Mercedes doesn't make
sense) and with all my needs and *wants* filled in its like $400...
Shoulda done that last month and gotten a specially good deal.

Economy continues to improve as the old crappy fuel gets more diluted. I
need to lay off the throttle some to get the economy way up. I started
into that today, unlike my 240D I don't need to floor it every time I take
off from a stop.

So once again I've picked up my 190D from the Indy. Some of you might

remember how it wouldn't shift into reverse. My Indy took the shifter
all apart, cleaned out 21 years of crud and replaced the shift bushings.
That took it from a super sloppy mystery shifter (you shift and hope
the gear you get is the one you wanted) to a normal good shifting car.
The reverse gate now works exactly as I'd expect it to, slide to the
right, push down, pull back. 5th is now very easy to get into as well
which is good I'm sure my fuel mileage was suffering by my not shifting
into it before.

ALSO now the shifter doesn't lean so far to the side in 1st and 5th

so I can hook the boot to the base without it pulling the base up,
nice.

I like driving this car so much I'm now thinking I should turn down

Fred's offer of a set of used seat bottoms and instead invest in brand
new seat bottoms and pads for that new seat feel.

Great to hear that you find the car so much fun to drive (I agree). Let
me caution you. DO NOT hurry to shift into 5th or even 4th when driving
at speeds less than 40-45 mph. Allow the engine to wind out to 3000+ in
each gear. That will NOT increase fuel consumption (may even improve it
slightly). I've been driving 190D 5 speeds (three of them with 2.0, 2.2
and 2.5 liter engines) for more than 12 years (and 250kmi) and have
tried driving them almost every way they can be driven (including
getting the gear box into 5th as soon as possible).

The most common causes of poor fuel economy (after fuel leaks) are poor
quality fuel (good fuel can improve fuel economy by 10-20%) and
improper
operating temp (a thermostat that's stuck even a little open can lower
fuel economy in city/stop-and-go driving by 30% or more). Allowing the
engine to lug can easily degrade economy by 10% or more. Shifting to a
higher gear too soon - before the engine will be at least at the low
end
of the torque plateau in the gear (that's in the low/mid 2000 rpm range
- the actual torque peak is at 2800, but it's very broad and almost
flat) results in the excessive fuel consumption! Improper injection
timing and poor injector condition (improper pressures or spray
pattern)
usually only have a minor effect of fuel economy until they are way off
and usually there is some other presenting problem (noise, poor idle,
smoke) before poor fuel economy is noticed.

[MBZ] Torque Spec, If Any

2006-03-12 Thread John Peterson
I had a one drip a week leak in my transmission cooler line where the
transmission fluid line meets the radiator connector. I take the car off
the road for the winter, and with the cold Winters it was I'll wait until
Spring to fix.

So yesterday I put two wrenches on the connection and give it a good
tighten. It no longer leaks.

So what is the point you ask? Well, my 32 years have taught me that nothing
is ever this simple. I'm willing to be that by tightening it I am really
overcompensating for some weakness in the connection - should I be replacing
this line? I know they are not expensive and my instinct is telling me
change it. But it could be that the fitting was just a bit loose.

Anyone have experience with this? Is there a torque setting for the
connection? I couldn't find on my MB CD.

Thanks Friends

I have seen them go for as little as 8k with low miles like that and for as

[MBZ] It Arrived!

2005-06-19 Thread John Peterson
So, the 1990 300D 2.5 arrived via shipping from New Orleans for my wife- I'm
sad to say that it has a few problems. I think they can be fixed at a
reasonable cost- can anyone tell me rough numbers?

1.Broken Windshield
2.Rear Muffler
3.Motor Mounts
4.Alignment (steering wheel upside down!)
5.Fuel leak on a small piece under hood, photo at
www.immersionstudio.com/images/fuel.jpg -- what is this piece??

Of course, the motor mounts make the thing sound like a Mack truck-
unbelieveable difference between my 1991which has 71k. It shakes like crazy.

In the end, the sad thing is that my wife will probably not want to keep the
car and I'll need to sell it. She thinks it is just too rough for her.

Should I sell it as is or do the above repairs? I paid 6k plus shipping. My
1991 was 7500, a much better deal as it turns out! It needed nothing.

Looks like the fuel thermostat is leaking. Other than the windshield
and muffler, the other items on your to do list don't strike me as
either expensive or difficult to rectify. The car looks nice, and the
price sure was right, so why not re-consider selling until you've had
it a bit longer? Looks like a great deal to me.

[MBZ] Changing fuel thermostat on a 300D 2.5

2005-06-29 Thread John Peterson
I ordered a fuel thermostat and muffler for the 1990 300D (hoping my wife
will like the car with less noise!) and the muffler looks like the easiest
thing in the world to change. The clamps are so well built and remove so
easily. I've never seen such quality.

Regarding the fuel thermostat, has anyone changed these? I looked on my
service CD for info on the removal process- can't see how the thing comes
off.

Quite possibly. It shifts fine at light throttle and full throttle. Not
so hot in between. I don't have the special gold-plated gauge to measure

I think Brian's referring to the coolant loop, where it enters the
head. Your fuel thermostat should remove quite easily, since it's
just held onto the block by two 5mm allen-head bolts, and of course
the fuel and coolant lines themselves. A ball-head type allen wrench
will assist in the removal process. Disconnecting the hoses will
probably be the toughest part of the project.

[MBZ] Stars in the Air

2005-07-02 Thread John Peterson
It was a great day in Rhode Island. Myself and lister Dwight Giles took to
the wrenches and installed a new fuel thermostat and rear muffler in my '90.
The fuel thermo was a PITA because it is a real tight fit- and the hoses
(clamps) don't come off quickly.

We also filled the fuel filter with Lubro and ran it out.

The car is shaking quite a bit at idle, is lacking power, and from about
halfway pressed down on the pedal to full throttle there is no increase in
speed when driving- almost like it is bogging down.

Could the violent idle and nailing along with the lack of power mean a bad
spraying injector?

ANY suggestions what to try next?

Attached, a photo of THREE diesels in the driveway. My '90, '91 and
Dwight's beautiful green machine.

[MBZ] 1990 2.5 D Greasy Hands=Results

2005-07-08 Thread John Peterson
I've been slowly fixing the items on the 300D 2.5 I had shipped up from
Louisana.

The windshield was replaced in my driveway for $179 by Triumph Glass
(national firm) and it looks perfect.

I replaced the muffler with a dealer part (with help from Dwight Giles)

I replaced the fuel thermostat (with help from Dwight Giles)

And I was all worried because the car wasn't tracking straight- and the
paranoid me was thinking alignment or other front end work and I discovered
something funny yesterday. I was looking at the tires and they are all the
same size, a matching set. But in looking at one of the rims, I noticed
that it stuck out from the rotor a greater distance than the others. I took
off the rim and compared it to the others and although it looks identical,
the spacing for the lug nuts is different- the depth of the distance from
wheel to rotor. This one was out by more than 1 inch. Must be a DIFFERENT
wheel!!

I pulled it off and put on the spare and voila! Perfect tracking.

For the missing power issue, the Lubro Moly is doing magic- and it is
gaining power DAILY. Car was sitting for some time.

I'm doing motor mounts next and the thing will be like new. It is a
beautiful riding car- with no difference in ride from my 1991 with 73k
miles. Having fun.

[MBZ] Alda Line

2005-07-08 Thread John Peterson
So, while I'm at the process of cleaning out the injectors I clean the banjo
fitting- good. Then I check hoses from the Alda to the vacuum amplifier
(blue disk shaped thing) and they let air pass okay. But here's the strange
thing- with the Y adapter that attacheds to the ALDA disconnected the car
drives equally slow.

I have 2 2.5's -- this one has less power (although has gotten better with
the purge)

If I disconnect the Y at the ALDA, I should see some performance
difference, no? What to check next?

Re: [MBZ] Alda Line

2005-07-08 Thread John Peterson
Correction- yes, it runs from the ALDA to the electric valve. I will try to
round up some hose to run from the banjo to the ALDA.

The car feels like it is starving for fuel- but it could be that the turbo is
running but the ALDA is not sending the signal to the pump for additional fuel.

I also suspect a clogged intake screen in the tank could be a possibility- but
wouldn't there be lots of air in the pre filter or other visible evidence of a
clogged screen?

Could this be as simple as clogged injectors, or is an ALDA / pressure issue
more likely?

  John,

I don't know why your ALDA would be connected to the vacuum amplifier
(normally this is for the auto transmission modulator)! From the banjo on the
intake manifold, the pressure signal should go through a normally open electric
valve (part of over boost protection) and then to the ALDA. On yours there may
be a tee in the line for an electronic sensor/monitor.

For a GOOD test, you should run a pressure line directly from the banjo
fitting to the ALDA.

Please review your connections and try the test I mentioned.

It is driving at what I would describe as 2/3 power. The boost is probably

The later ('90+) OM60x.96 engines opened the wastegate when the emissions
control system was detected to be not properly operating or boost was
excessive. This of course leaves you with NO boost so NO fuel enrichment.
In addition, the wastegate OR the EGR could be stuck open!

[MBZ] Pulling Codes by Watching Blinks or peaks on Multimeter

2005-07-10 Thread John Peterson
On the 602 engine, I have heard that one can count flashes or blips on a
multimeter to get at the codes being thrown by the motor. I bought a
multimeter today, and am searching the archives and mercedeshop.com forum for
information on how to use a multimeter to read the codes.

On the service CD's, I have the procedure using the MB special tool, which I
don't have. Has anyone used anything (like a multimeter, for example) to count
codes on a 602?

You are absolutely right. The CURRENT contracts were signed by Bush. The big
smear campaign about no bid contracts for Haliburton was during the life of the
original contract signed by Clinton.

Just like the collapse of Enron happened during the Bush administration. BUT,
when were the illegal acts taking place? And how on earth would the president
know what some company was doing so he could be personally responsible for the
collapse? Yet, who was blamed for the economic loss?

The contracts were renewed by Bush at their expiration. Who were the other
contractors who wanted the contract? If there was a buddy deal going, why
didn't they go public with it? Couldn't they find a newspaper that had room? Or
was all the space taken by stories about flushing the Koran down the toilet?

I'll take the blame for making an error. But let's talk about errors that
were actually made by the person being blamed. AND, let's make sure they are
actually errors, not just differences of opinion.

I'll bet we could get an argument going about which class of MB is the

Uhm...actually, the current no-bid contracts with Halliburton were
carried out in 2003. I don't think Clinton was still in office, then.

It amazes me that Republicans still haven't seen a problem they can't

Exactly. Life was much simpler back then. Only the strong survived. We

If they had to do that nowadays they wouldn't have time to go to the mall.

[MBZ] Dasher Diesel

2007-02-23 Thread John Peterson
My first car was a 1981 Dasher Diesel. Wonderful driving car- standard
shift, had MBTex-like perforated vinyl seats, and had no horsepower,
perfect for a 16 year old. I had only one problem with it, it wouldn't
start in the cold. It had plenty of compression, and I changed the
plugs, injectors etc. and never got it to start properly here in the cold.

But now that I have a family, I'd love a manual shift 124 Diesel. I
want one so badly I'm willing to pay to have one shipped from Europe
when they are able to be imported legally.

All in all that Dasher was a very reliable car. Easy to work on too.

Makes some sense, since the Dasher is the predecessor of the Quantum (they
were all Passats or Santanas in the rest of the world) and the gas Quanta
(and the Audi 4000) use longitudinal engines. On the Audi 4000 Quattro I
used to have, as on a friend's Quantum Syncro, the radiator is definitely to
the driver's side of the block. Only way the inline five could be squeezed
in there with the relatively short hood those cars have (compared to other
cars with inline fives and sixes, like Mercedes or BMW).

already been run down some and once you fail starting a couple times it just
keeps getting harder.
Anyway it did finally fire up and I put out the heater cord for her so it won't

[MBZ] 722.4 / 1991 300D 2.5 Transmission Question

2007-03-10 Thread John Peterson
Hello Listers- I have a question, I have a 722.4 transmission in my '91
300D, 81k miles. I had a MB rebuilt put in 2 years ago, 8k miles ago.
I have noticed for the last couple of months that the 1-2 shift is a bit
soft, and I know the language of these descriptions can be difficult,
but by soft I mean that there is a small overlap of 1 and 2, it is by
no means a crisp shift as is the remaining shifts that come next.
Those shifts are so tight and immediate that I often get put back in my
chair. The 1-2 shift doesn't sound like a slip, I have experienced this
before with the previous faulty transmission. This is more of a sort of
sensation that is only about 1 second or so where one would think the
shift is just a bit late, and not definite.

I am paranoid about automatics- the car has 81k and this is the 3rd
one. The first was spoiled by an indy overfilling by 2 quarts, the 2nd
was installed (factory rebuilt) and was defective 50 miles down the
road. This one, the third, is most likely fine by I want to hear from
the list on this 1-2 shift and if it is softer than the other shifts.
Maybe I just need medication.

Thanks friends,

I think it has a 2 year warranty. It expires very soon, April I think.
There is no flare at all, just a sort of overlap I guess the only way
to describe it is that all other changes are snappy and this one is
rather slushy, almost like the time itself to change between the gears
is 1 second or so while the others are a fraction of a sec.

Regarding if it is a 1-2 or 2-3, I'm not sure. It is the first actual
change of gears that happens after starting off. I was never sure it it
starts in 1st or 2nd.

Thanks to all for the wonderful expert advice. I'll keep people posted.

I did the diesel purge last week on the 2.5, and WOW, it sounds like a
swiss watch. During the purge process the nailing went away about 1/2
way through the bottle of purge. It was amazing- like now you hear it
now you don't. I'm getting better gas mileage too.

I keep thinking I just need to beat it up a bit more when driving- pedal
to the floor etc. But the $10 can of magic liquid has it sounding like
a gas engine- and has more power etc. too.

I was over Lister Dwight Giles' house today and we checked the
transmission fluid in my 300D and it was a bit low so we added a couple
of ounces. This might have been part of the slow 1-2 shift. We'll see.

[MBZ] Slightly Wandering Posterior

2007-03-11 Thread John Peterson
I'm having the control arms changed out in the front of my 124, BUT what
can I do about the slightly wandering rear end? I get a slight side to
side wandering above 40mph

Is this the rear end or could it be related to my spoiled control arms?

If it is the rear, which bushing do I need to change out. I might do
them at the same time.

Thanks friends!

Re: [MBZ] Slightly Wandering Posterior

2007-03-12 Thread John Peterson
I'm wondering if the wander isn't just the front ball joint I have out.
It has only recently started to really wander, and this has overlapped
the time the ball joint has been squeaking like the Michael Jackson song
(creaky door sound.)

Regarding the control arms, I got the control arm because my MB dealer
discouraged the changing of the ball joint alone. Maybe it is
overkill. I bought both sides with the (maybe flawed) logic that it
would be cost effective to change both at once. Roads are really bad
here in the winter and early spring until they fix 'em. I noticed a
huge degradation of the car since 3 years ago when I got it from
Florida. I know I have one ball joint out, I was able to isolate this
for sure, maybe I should shelve the other side control arm with ball
joint for later? Not knowing what the job entails I still don't know if
it makes sense to just swap them both out. I'm going to look at the
repair CD and take a look.

Anyone change both control arms at once? Have I been listening to too
many MB dealers?

Best investment I made in my ride was that damn $10 of Purge. Per
dollar investment pays off 100 fold in acceleration etc. Not so sure
about the $200 ea. control arms!

Early links are prone to failure. The bushing is vulcanized in place
and acts as a spring, so they cannot be replaced separately. The
rubber fails. Replacements are the new style and require a sleeve and
bolt kit, but replacement isn't bad and will greatly improve handling.

I have replaced most of them on both W124 chassis cars, and expect to
get the rear subframe mounts, which also go bad on the earlier cars,
soon.

[MBZ] 1996 E300

2007-03-17 Thread John Peterson
Hello Friends, I have a friend with more money than I do who is looking
at the /1996-1998 E class diesels/. Am I wrong to be telling him that
MB diesels are wonderful and he is going to love them? I warned him
that the '96 non turbo would be slow, but as far as reliability and what
we have all come to expect from our 123's and 124's, do these compare?
Are they a quality item?

I personally have been toying with the idea of getting a 190 2.6 gasser
for a third car here, along with my question about the later Diesels
above, anybody have a 190? Opinions?

Thanks

Re: [MBZ] Harbor Freighter

2007-03-23 Thread John Peterson
I think it is built and open, the one in Warwick RI. I saw it last
weekend. I didn't go in, but it appeared to be open for business.

Maybe the RI listers and I should plan a group event on opening day?

I fairly frequently see stuff there I'd like, and IR thermometer jumps to mind
but hearing other stories of mailorder disaster makes me wary...

However I did go to a Cummins Tool show last Sunday. Picked up a decent
cellphone carrier, a good set of magnetic parts and tool holders and an poor
quality dutch oven that in 5 or 10 years might season up to acceptable.

Fortunately, the one here is 14 miles away. The distance keeps my trips
down

to once a week..

[MBZ] Shake at 60MPH after Control Arm R+R

2007-03-30 Thread John Peterson
After having both of my control arms replaced, I get a pretty severe
shake in the wheel at 60+ mph. Same tires and rims etc. The indy
didn't know if I would need an alignment after the control arm job, but
could this be the cause of the shake? I thought alignment didn't have
to do with wheel shake and that this was mostly a result of wheel
balance etc.

Help!

Re: [MBZ] Shake at 60MPH after Control Arm R+R

2007-03-30 Thread John Peterson

I'll check the wheel weights.

I'm just ticked because I brought it in with no shake at all- but a
blown ball joint. Now it shakes like a s.o.g.

Could alignment do this?
