** I finally made it to Staten Island this afternoon, after getting a call from my friend Howard Fischer reminding me that the Rufous Hummingbird was still making appearances in his backyard. I was treated to spectacular looks of the bird and hung out with Teddy the Rufous Hummingbird and Howie until light began to fade. [nysbirds-l] Big Egg Marsh Queens NY...
A late afternoon walk at Big Egg Marsh Queens NY, turned up many of the usual species expected at this time of the year. Of interest, was a Chipping Sparrow that lacked the obvious Chestnut on the crown - suggesting a possible first-winter bird. The two juvenile Pectoral Sandpipers that I had there last Friday were not around and I could only hope that they survived the harassment from the Sharp-shinned Hawk that I observed buzzing them repeatedly. *Species observed:* Swamp Sparrow - 6 Song Sparrow - 9 Savannah Sparrow - 15 White Throated Sparrow - 8 Chipping Sparrow - 1 Field Sparrow - 3 House Sparrow - several Brandt - 39 Canada Goose - 5 Lesser Yellowlegs - 1 European Starling - 35 House Finch - 3 American Crow - 6 Northern Mockingbird - 1 Red-winged Blackbird - 3 + several flybys Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1 Ring-billed Gull - 4 Herring Gull - 3 Good and responsible birding! [nysbirds-l] 11/7 Staten Island Mt. Loretto, Plum Beach Bklyn Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Queens...
This morning, I visited Mount Loretto Staten Island and birded with Howard Fischer. The highlights were a couple of Eastern Bluebirds, an Adult Bald Eagle, 2 Cackling Geese and a surprise late Blackpoll Warbler that was thought to be male. Over at Great Kills, it was quiet save for 3 American Wigeons, 7 Buffleheads and an Osprey fishing quite close to the area called the Flats. After leaving Staten Island, I stopped by Plum Beach for about an hour of birding; nothing outside of the usual species this time of the year. Brandts were in abundance with about 500 + My last stop at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, I found some new arrivals in 2 Redhead Ducks (Male and Female) and 6 Common Goldeneyes (5 females and 1 Drake) all on the West Pond. Over in Pumpkin Channel, the number of Horned Grebes have definitely increased - I counted 23. Good and responsible birding! [nysbirds-l] 11/14 Piermont Pier Western Grebe (NO)...
I spent several hours searching for the reported Western Grebe at Piermont Pier this morning. My search began around 11: 10 a.m. and I finally called it a day around 3:00 p.m. after I began to get soaked for the second time around. Of note, was one Horned Grebe loafing with some Ruddy Ducks and Buffleheads. [nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake State Park, Jones Beach and Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge...
As Ken Feustel noted in his earlier post of today; birding this morning at Hempstead Lake Park was slow, but as it got warmer the birding picked up albeit the variety was slim. Species of note included both Ruby and Golden-crowned Kinglets, Brown Creeper and an *Orange-crowned Warbler* all observed by Joan Quinlan, Gurta Fritz, Bobby Kurtz and I. Over at Jones Beach, Joan, Gurta and I found the Pine Warbler, that was seen and reported earlier in the day by Ken and Sue Feustel. Additional birds of note were 2 immature White-crowned Sparrows, a Field Sparrow (seen around the Coast Guard Station) and a plethora of Eastern Phoebes. I stopped counting after 30, but I'm confident that we had well over 50 Phoebes around the areas we covered. My last stop was at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge where I noted a few new spring arrivals, Tricolored Heron (1), Little Blue Heron (1) and Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (2). All were seen in the marshes across from the West Pond Trail before bench 1. The North and South gardens had both Golden and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Good Spring Birding! [nysbirds-l] American Avocets, American While Pelican ++ @JBWR (Queens County)...
A good day of birding at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens. As noted from my hurried posts from the field, the highlights were 3 breeding plumage American Avocets and an American White Pelican . I found one, then two then three Avocets feeding voraciously on the East Pond; at times they drifted away from each other, but for the most part stayed together. They were visible from the overlook accessible from Big John's Pond trail and seemed content to feed in that area. About an hour after that find, NPS Rangers, Julia Clebsch and Neena Mohammed spotted an American Pelican while on assignments over by the North Channel bridge and relayed the find to me. I hurried over and verified the find, but had some trouble posting from the field in that area, so my apologies for not getting that out as quickly I could. The bird was on the beach side from the North end of the East Pond and visible from the North Channel parking lot (East Side). It was still there when I left the area about an hour ago. Other good birds found today include: West Pond - Western Sandpiper (1), Pectoral Sandpiper (1) and 7 Stilt Sandpipers on the East Pond. [nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Shorebirds - Hudsonian Godwit (NO)...
Late this afternoon, I hiked the East Pond working my way from the South to the North End and back (note: the water remains high in certain places, but I found the pond to be navigable with proper care and gear). There appeared to be more shorebirds around than the previous day with the variety holding steady as previously reported by others earlier in the week. Of note, I had a high count of 6 Pectoral Sandpipers, four of them together just before the raunt and two further down at the North End. White-rumped Sandpipers continue in good numbers with a count of 23. The adult Long-billed Dowitcher on the South End continues as well as the 2 Baird's Sandpipers who seem to be comfortable with the stretch of habitat past the raunt. Stilt Sandpipers continue, though not as many as a few days ago; 2 Western Sandpipers were observed near the cove just past the raunt. A Wilson's Phalarope, probably the same bird that I had on the South End last Tuesday and again on Thursday with other birders, has moved further down the pond and was near the North End. Steve Walter reported having a Wilson's Phalarope just past the raunt yesterday, so it could be the same bird that's just moving around on the pond or a new bird. *Not seen,* was the Hudsonian Godwit that was reported today. [nysbirds-l] Eurasian (Common) Teal, Barrow's @ JBWR...
Early this morning a Eurasian (Common Teal) was observed on the West Pond @ Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. In addition, the Barrow's Goldeneye was on the West Pond, then left for the bay. Also, in light of yesterday's discussion on the number of the Snow Geese seen this year at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. I should note that I observed well over 3,000 Snow Geese this morning out on the marshes. Good and responsible birding! [nysbirds-l] 46 SNOWY EGRETS @ Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge...
I spent the afternoon at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, birding both East and West Ponds as well as the gardens. Land birds were scarce and nary a warbler was seen or heard. My highlights, were the following: *46* SNOWY EGRETS, *27* GREAT EGRETS, *9* LITTLE BLUE HERONS, **5 TRI-COLORED HERONS**, *28* GLOSSY IBIS, *14* BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS and *2* YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. Also pleasing was the sight of FORSTER'S TERNS in the bay, I counted *15* of them. Other notables included 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS foraging around the shores of the West Pond, with one GREATER YELLOWLEGS loafing nearby for good comparison. Good Birding! [nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Prospect Park and Forest Park...
I spent a good 4 hours in the morning starting from around 7:30 a.m. birding Jamaica Bay, both East and West ponds and the North and South Gardens. Egrets and Herons, including Tri-colored continue in good numbers. On the West Pond shores, I had *5 Pectoral Sandpipers*; an increase of 3 from the 2, I had on Sunday with Tom Burke and Gail Benson. Other highlights included a *Cliff Swallow* over at the East Pond, multiple Yellow Warblers, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and Blue-headed Vireos in both the North and South Gardens. Later at Prospect Park, thanks to a very hospitable birder whose name I got asEni, I learned my way around the Lullwater Cove area. My search for yesterday's reported Brewster's Warbler was unsuccessful, but on my way out around the Lullwater area, I found a *Prairie Warbler*, that I was able to photograph. Other notables at Prospect included, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Blue-headed Vireos, Swamp Sparrows, Field Sparrow and both Kinglets. Finally at Forest Park, I birded for a bit with Corey Finger and we had multiple Pine Warblers, Hermit Thrushes, Rusty Blackbirds and Ruby Crowned Kinglets. In all three locations, Eastern Towhees and Yellow-rumped Warblers were in good numbers. Yesterday, in dire weather conditions I did some coastal birding specifically in Queens County. Of note, were Surf and Black Scoters right off the fisherman's parking lot at Fort Tilden. [nysbirds-l] 7/7- 7/8 Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Queens County...
I birded Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on two different tide cycles to look for any shorebird movement and also to assess the water level on the East Pond. Shorebirds are definitely on their way as evidenced by the numbers of Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and Short-billed Dowitchers. Additional shorebird species included, Spotted Sandpiper, Killdeer, Eastern Willet, and Oystercatchers. Other highlights included a Tri-colored Heron, 2 Greater Scaup and 7 Ruddy Ducks. The water on the East Pond remain high, but is definitely lowering and some shoreline, is starting to show up across from the overlook at Big John's Pond. However, there is till some ways to go for ample mud flats before the arrival of the peeps. Let's hope for sustained hot weather with little to no rain. Finally, for those interested in butterflies, there were at least 3 American Snout lurking around the Hackberry Tree outside the visitor's center. Good Birding! [nysbirds-l] 7/21 - Cupsogue LI - Red-necked Stint (NO)...
Today, I birded two tide cycles at Cupsogue LI, checking the area where the Red-necked Stint was reported yesterday, but came up empty. The conditions were dismal for birding with heavy fog engulfing the area for most of the morning. I had a hint of what the visibility would look like when I stopped at Pikes Beach and could not even see the spit that is normally seen from the viewing platform. Despite the fog, I did venture out onto the flats during low tide, with the hope that the fog would subside. However, it did not and after it seemed to be thickening, I abandoned the flats since I could barely make out what was ahead of me. The best birds I had on the flats were two adult Roseate Terns. [nysbirds-l] 7/25 Hudsonian Godwit continues at JBWR (Queens County)...
The Hudsonian Godwit was seen today around the same area it was last seen yesterday, which is north of the raunt on the East Pond. Yesterday, the bird was found south of the raunt, but later moved just north of the raunt and that is exactly the area where it flew into this morning, where it fed for quite sometime. Shorebird numbers were building nicely despite the lack of habitat to rest and feed on at the East Pond. Stilt Sandpipers were very well represented and I tallied 41 today with possibly more elsewhere on the pond. Most of them were seen feeding near the raunt. Including the HUGO, other highlights were a Pied Biled Grebe seen on the East Pond, 4 Ruddy ducks, a Western Willet seen on the West Pond shores and 123 Least Terns, with the majority being juvenile birds, mostly seen on the bay side beach area across from bench 7. If you are going to try for the Godwit, I would suggest trying 1st from the overlook from Big John's Pond trail, as the Godwit could easily be seen from that area if it is not hidden from views in one of the many coves on the East Pond. I should also add that there are a lot of shorebirds showing up on the shores of the West Pond with the majority of them being peeps, so that pond is worth working over thoroughly. Good Shorebirding! [nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay including water level...
As posted earlier, the *Hudsonian Godwit* was feeding near the raunt earlier today. I would suggest trying for that bird early in the morning as it appears to move from the pond when the tide has turned. Several birders tried late for the Godwit but did not get the bird. In trying to assist folks in finding the bird, I ventured over to the North End and navigated all the way in to the area known to some as dead man's cove. Unfortunately, despite several careful sweeps of the pond from that area I could not relocate the Godwit, which could either have been hidden from my field of view or had already headed out into the bay. At the South End this morning, there were noticeably fewer birds than I had yesterday. Including HUGO, other highlights from this morning were, a few *Stilt Sandpiper*s, *3 Pectorals* and *2 Northern Waterthrushes*. Now to the water level - I have had several e-mails and phone calls asking about the water level situation on the East Pond. Here is the scoop: The South End has started to see mudflats opening up and elsewhere on the eastern edge of the pond where the shoreline is higher, mudflats are starting to show. For example the Raunt. However, the North End remains under water. As stated above, I walked in on the North End this morning and there, is currently no mudflats or shoreline on that section of the pond. However, NPS are aware of the problem and giving it their attention, as I witnessed today - After leaving the North End of the pond, I ran into several National Park Service officials who were at the site assessing the outflow situation with an engineer. I accompanied them to the outflow and listened in, as they discussed several options in trying to address the problem with the water level both short and long term. Without getting into any details, I will say that it was very encouraging to witness the attention given to this issue and I am hopeful that the discussion will be followed by actions. To be fair, Gateway NPS are trying, but may be face with several restrictions including budget. However, I remain hopeful that NPS will find a short term solution to get the water level down to where it needs to be for this shorebird season and in parallel work towards a long term solution to address the issue with the drawing down of the pond. [nysbirds-l] Fwd: gull (or no gull) today
Please see the e-mail below from Gail Mackiernan, who asked me to post this on the list serve. -- Forwarded message -- From: Gail Mackiernan katahdi...@comcast.net Date: Thu, Aug 4, 2011 at 9:11 PM Subject: gull (or no gull) today To: birdingd...@gmail.com Hi Andrew, I can't post to NY Birds but maybe you could forward this to the list Several of us from Maryland and Virginia drove up today and failed to see the gull. However we did obtain some information -- two gentlemen (locals) said they had been at the spot (in front of Nathan's) from about 8 AM and had not seen the bird. Adding, we heard someone did about 7:30. Later another birder said he had been told by a policeman (one of those on the little run-abouts) that he -- the cop -- had seen the bird earlier further south along the beach -- describing the gull with the red bill and legs. We did not meet any birders who personally had seen the gull; however since we didn't arrive until 9:30 AM, those with early success may well have left. I don't think the palm sprizter was off today only because it was cool -- the one further south was going full blast all day -- but because there was a sandcastle-building project with day-camp kids most of the late morning and early afternoon, and it was located right next to the sprayer. Who knows? But obviously, if it is important to the gull they need to turn it on -- all those scores of birders were eating a lot of hot dogs, ice cream etc.! Many of us who failed to see the bird will undoubtedly try again so any reports -- a negative report is as valuable as a positive one, by the way, if not as good to hear -- so please everyone, keep posting! [nysbirds-l] Water Level at JBWR...
Since I have gotten several inquires as to the water level conditions on the East Pond, I decided I would post to the list serve and share my observations from today. With the water level on the East Pond being at least 6-7'' more than it should have been as of this past week, I dreaded the outcome of the rainfall that was forecasted for Sunday August 14th. My fears were confirmed this morning as I walked into the South End of the East Pond. The water level was so high, it was all the way into the path just before the pond. That should give anyone who have birded the South End of the East pond an idea of what the conditions are like. All the mud flats that were gained on the South End are gone, well under water. The raunt, is under water as well and that was one of the few areas where peeps had a place to rest and feed during high tide. Over on the West Pond, the water level is also high, with no mudflats available for any of the smaller shorebirds. The bar across from benches 3 and 4 which is always good for some shorebirds such as, Greater Yellowlegs and Short-billed Dowitchers, is also under water. Will the conditions improve before the shorebird festival? Your guess is as good as mine. One bird not mentioned in Ken Feustel's Jones Beach report yesterday was a *Marbled Godwit* seen by a few of us, on one of the bars north of the Coast Guard Station. I did not see this bird today, but the tide was low during my visit, so it could be anywhere nearby if it did not leave. Also of note from yesterday at the Coast Guard Station were *2 juvenile Semipalmated Sandpipers*, *2 juvenile Least Sandpipers* and *1 juvenile Sanderling*. Be prepared for mosquitoes if visiting either the Coast Guard Station or the swale. Today, the mosquitoes near the swale was so bad a few beachgoers ran for cover abandoning the beach after encountering hordes of mosquitoes. Missing the shorebirds already! [nysbirds-l] American White Pelicans at Jamiaca Bay [YES]...
Both *American White Pelicans *seen today with Tom Burke, Gail Benson, Don Riepe and Cindy Goulder from a boat on the bay. They were located around the same area where they were reported yesterday, on the beach side overlooking the bay towards JKF Airport. Approximately, half way between Broad Channel and the Channel Bridge (the one which the A train crosses over) at the north end of the East Pond. I should add that according to a few NPS rangers we spoke with today, the birds have apparently been around and were seen at the outflow valve on the bayside of the north end of the East Pond last Thursday. Even though we did not see them there today, it is worth noting that this is the same area where 1 AWPE hung around for some time last Summer and should be checked. In addition to the *Pelicans*, another bird of note seen by Tom, Gail and I today included 1 *Hudsonian Godwit *feeding on the bayside at the north end of the East Pond. Finally, at the rate Steve Walter is finding rarities, it might be wise to find out where he is birding next! Re: [nysbirds-l] LI Birds: Say's Phoebe at Robert Moses SP [YES]
Late this afternoon, Bobby Kurtz re-found the *Say's Phoebe* found earlier today by Joan Quinlan and later located by Shai Mitra. The bird was seen by Bobby around the same area described earlier by Shai. I managed to make it to Robert Moses with some light still available and found the bird after about 45 minutes of searching. It was on the beach side of the picnic area of the southwestern corner of parking field 2 (see Shia's e-mail below for more information on that location). The bird flew and perched on one of the signs on the dunes, stayed for a minute and then dropped out of sight. Hopefully, the bird hangs in there for those who could not make it out to Moses today. I had seen Joan there, shortly before she found it, but for various reasons I didn't learn about it until quite a bit later. Needless to say, I headed over immediately upon getting the word from Patricia Lindsay and re-found the bird at 11:40. At that time, it was frequenting the dunes south of the concrete walkway linking the southwestern corner of parking field 2 to the golf course clubhouse. From here, it moved eastward along the fences lining the afore-mentioned walkway, then settled into the picnic area immediately west of the parking field. Because my cell battery was dead (see above, under various reasons), I retreated to my car to plug in my phone and make a few calls. By the time I returned to search for the bird (by now with Patricia Lindsay), we could not find it before we both had to leave. [nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted Goose in the Bronx [Yes] + Eared Grebe in Queens [Yes]...
While leading a walk at Van Courtlandt Park in the Bronx, my group were treated to the *Greater White-fronted Goose* in the fenced off area on the Parade Grounds. This is the area right across from the Ranger Station. We wondered if this could be the same GFWG that we had last year at Van Courtlandt Parkhttp://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2010/12/van-courtlandt-bird-walk-report-12-11.html(click on the link to see a photo and post from that date). If you try for the GFWG and do not see it on the parade ground, try the Van Courtlandt lake or the Golf Course. Much later back in Queens, I had the continuing *Eared Grebe* on the Bayside of the West Pond in the company of about 12 Horned Grebes. A *Red-necked Grebe*, was reported in the log book earlier in the week, but I could not find that bird. The West Pond was dotted with Ruddy Ducks along with both species of Scaups and a smattering of other waterfowl including a few Common Goldeneyes. No sign of the American Bittern or the Red-head Ducks. I did not get to bird the East Pond but I heard that the *Eurasian Wigeon*, is still showing on the North End of the pond. [nysbirds-l] Bronx Birding - Greater White-fronted Goose, Orange Crowned Warbler, Scarlet Tanager +
Yesterday, our group from my Saturday bird walk, again had the continuing *GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE* on the parade grounds at Van Courtlandt Park. Some of us first had the bird at around 7:50 a.m. and then we all saw it around 8:00 - 8:30. Later on, around 10:30 a.m. we tried to get some late comers on the bird, but by then it had left the parade grounds. Following the walk, I continued birding the Bronx and had some good results. At Pelham Bay, I found an *ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER*, then had quite the surprise when I found 3 *BALTIMORE ORIOLES* and 1 female *SCARLET TANAGER* feeding on Porcelain Berries. I have included Ken's e-mail in this thread so that the information is easy to find. Good luck if you go. Good Birding! Specifically, at the point where the access road opens up to reveal Jones Inlet on the right. The bird was feeding low along the shrub line on the south side of the road, hawking insects and eating the fruits of Bayberry, and being harassed by a Mockingbird (anybody up for opening a season on Mockingbirds?). Typical of the fall Ash-throated Flycatchers I have observed in the past the bird never perched higher than five feet off the ground. The overall shape of the bird was a small-billed, long tailed, slim *Myiarchus. *The head showed a crest, and the throat was whitish and the upper breast was a whitish gray. The lower belly and undertail coverts were yellow, the yellow being more intense than most fall Ash-throated's I have seen, which may have been a function of the overcast day, which tends to enhance color (just as a bright sun washes color out). The entire undertail was reddish brown and the terminal portion of the undertail was a darker reddish brown than the rest of the tail. The whitish-gray upperparts eliminated Great Crested and the small bill eliminated both Great-crested and Brown-crested Flycatchers (*M. crinitus and M. tyrannulus*), while the entirely reddish underparts on the tail rule out Dusky-capped Flycatcher (*M. tuberculifer). *At one point the bird did pose for me at distance of less than twenty feet, but unfortunately, my camera chose this moment to malfunction (the battery was not seated properly, hence no power). Attempts to relocate the bird were unsuccessful, one birder missed seeing the bird by five minutes. Wednesday weather looks pretty miserable -perhaps the bird will stick around. Also in the general area was an *Orange-crowned Warbler *and Ruby-crowned Kinglet. The two *Marbled Godwits* continue, feeding on the mud flats on the south side of Meadow Island. As Shane Blodgett indicated in an earlier post, there was a major seabird movement this morning along the south shore that included Red-throated Loon, Scoter and Gannet. I joined Shai Mitra earlier in the morning at Fire Island Field 5 to witness the spectacle. Suffice to say that RTL numbers were in the thousands as were total Scoter numbers. One would think that with all these birds present something interesting would appear. However, other than six flyby *Razorbills *that were seen shortly after Shai left, nothing notable appeared. Re: [nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher at West End/Jones Beach RE-FOUND 11-23...(YES)
After getting wet and dried out twice, I was finally rewarded as the *Ash-throated Flycatcher* put in a brief appearance around 2:45 p.m. *(in the same area as mentioned by Ken Feustel)* before flying over some bayberry bushes and dropping out of sight in the dunes. Michael McBrien and his mom showed up shortly after and I stuck around to assist in re-finding the bird. We put in almost two hours before rain and fading light put an end to our quest. During that time we did not see the bird. Other notable birds at Jones West End, included a *Ring-necked Pheasant*, 2 *Long-billed Dowitchers* on the grass next to the rest rooms at the Coast Guard Station and the continuing 2 *Marbled Godwits* at the spit. [nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike + Marbled Godwit @ Floyd Bennett Field Kings County...
Just got off the phone with Jean Loscalzo who relayed a message from Corey Finger who is at Floyd Bennett with Shawn Bilerman. Shawn and Corey found a couple of good birds at FBF in a Northern Shrike and Marbled Godwit. Despite the poor cell phone connection, I could make out that location for the Shrike appeared to be the Eastern runway that heads toward the outflow and the Godwit is at the outflow. [nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted Goose @ Van Courtlandt Park Bronx + Northern Shrike in Brooklyn (YES)...
The Van Courtlandt Park* Greater White-fronted Goose*, which has not been seen for a few weeks was found this morning in a flock of about 500 Canada Geese North East of the Parade Grounds. Over the past few weeks during our Saturday walks at Van Courtlandt Park, we had searched for this bird with no luck, so it was nice to see that it was still around. Maybe it will make it to count week. Following the walk I headed into Brooklyn to look for the *Northern Shrike*, which I searched for and missed yesterday. After about an hour and a half of searching I found the target bird hunting low along tree line behind the camp grounds. Please note that this bird was also seen yesterday (not by me), near the runway where the model airplanes are flown, indicating that it is using a nice bit of territory to forage. I was able to get some photos of both the Greater White-fronted and Northern Shrike, which I will post later on my blog. Good December Birding! [nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (Queens County) 12/24/11...
I birded JBWR this morning beginning just after sunrise. Highlights included the continuing* EARED GREBE*, seen from the West Pond trail near bench 7 as it drifted South West in Pumpkin Channel/Bay. This Grebe was also seen late yesterday afternoon with Tom Burke and Gail Benson. An *AMERICAN BITTERN* flew south while I was at the Big John's overlook and I managed one quick (poor but diagnostic) photo as the bird flew into the light. Several *CANVASBACK DUCKS* were mixed in with the raft of Scaup and Ruddy Ducks on the West Pond. Winter hardy birds included: *Great Egret*, seen from the West Pond Trail, flying into the marsh near the Osprey platform and then later seen feeding near the West Pond edges. 2 *Golden-crowned Kinglets *made their presence known in the South Gardens. Unlike the Captree CBC Catbirds, a rather uncooperative *Gray Catbird* gave brief looks in the North Gardens and a *Brown Thrasher* that I managed to get a look at after working the garden over on the East Pond for a bit. Photo here: http://www.illinoisbirds.org/photo_archives/graces_warbler.html There may also be records from Quebec and Newfoundland but I've not been able to track down the specifics. On the wrong side of the Mississippi River, there is also a May 2008 record from western Nebraska (Garden Co.). That's it! Anybody find any other E-o-t-M records? Hats of to Doug and Andrew for a really outstanding find and kudos to Seth and other for spreading the news via posts or phone calls. I can easily believe 150-200 people saw the bird today. [nysbirds-l] 1-8-12 Summary of Brooklyn/Queens Rarities...
In addition to many of the good birds reported from Long Island today, there were several excellent birds that were seen today in Brooklyn and Queens. The following, is a summary of several seen by Tom Burke and Gail Benson that they have asked me to report on their behalf. *Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge - Queens* *Eared Grebe* continues at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on the bayside - Seen from around Bench 1, but best views can be obtained from Broad Channel. *Drake* *Barrow's Goldeneye* continues at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on the bayside - seen West of the South End of the West Pond. *Drake Eurasian Wigeon* continues at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge - seen on the East Pond just north of the Big John's pond overlook. * Fort Tilden - Queens* *Adult Lesser Black-backed Gull* in front of the Silver Gull Club. Additional note on birds in Queens. Lots of Snow Geese seen on the East Pond; yesterday, a small goose was noticed in flight accompanying a large flock of Snow Geese, but no conclusive views were obtained to confirm whether it was a Ross'. One to keep an eye out for. * Floyd Bennett Field- Brooklyn* At least 7 *Red-necked Grebes* - Seen from the From the boat ramp * Owls Head - Brooklyn* *Adult Black-headed Gull* seen very well at the Owl's Head Treatment plant. An incredible day of birding for Tom and Gail! [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Queens County...
Late this afternoon while out looking for Cackling Goose in Queens, I found a Pink-footed Goose. The location may not be very familiar to many, so I have tried to map it out and posted additional information on my blog. See here http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/ Good luck if you go and please be mindful that the location is not ideal for high traffic along the edges, so please enjoy your views without trampling the vegetation. Other birds of note in the area include, Palm Warbler and Wilson's Snipe. [nysbirds-l] 1/26/2012 Audubon's Warbler Continues at Sunken Meadow SP, LI
Just getting a chance to post this now. Arie Gilbert called about 1/2 hour ago indicating that he saw the Audubon's Warbler today at Sunken Meadow SP, Suffolk County, Long Island. I have included Shai Mitra, (the finder's) post from the 24th on this thread (see below), which has additional information on where to look for this bird. Andrew Baksh Queens NY www.birdingdude.blogspot.com On Tue, Jan 24, 2012 at 4:08 PM, Shaibal Mitra shaibal.mi...@csi.cuny.eduwrote: The Audubon's Warbler reported from Sunken Meadow SP, Suffolk County, Long Island on 11 January is still present and appears to have a predictable routine. When Patricia Lindsay and I visited yesterday afternoon from 3:15-4:15, there was no activity in the snow-fenced juniper clump east of the the easternmost lot. We split up to search the margins of the creek to the south of this lot, from its eastern end to the foot-bridge. I found the Audubon's with a group of Black-capped Chickadees in junipers along the southern edge of the creek, and its distinctive chip note was audible to Patricia as she walked along the opposite, north side of the creek (to my ear this note is similar to that of a Myrtle Warbler but noticeably higher, less hollow-sounding, and with more of ch sound vs. a t sound at the start). On 11 January we saw the bird fly toward the creek when it left the northeastern corner of the easternmost parking lot. Arriving this morning around 10:15, I went directly to the snow-fenced juniper clump. Here I immediately found a flock of chickadees, and the Audubon's Warbler was with them. I watched it feeding on juniper berries off and on over the next two hours, but it was often invisible, deep within the trees. It was joined by several different Myrtle Warblers at various times, but these didn't tend to stay for long (they seemed to come and go from clumps of junipers and pines farther to the east). All of these patterns were very similar to what we observed on the sunny morning of 11 January. To search for this bird I suggest checking the snow-fenced juniper clump for activity. If the chickadees are there, you will hear them. Just wait patiently from an angle where you can watch the junipers in good light. If the flock is not present, check the junipers on both sides of the creek to the south, at least as far westward as the footbridge. I managed a few more photos today. These show, variously, the plain face pattern, the extensively white wing covert pattern, the absence of bold streaking on the body, the thin dark centers to the rump feathers (indicating a female), and the pattern of the outermost rectrices (white patch separated from feather tip by a broader black segment than in Myrtle Warbler). Some of the photos differ subtly from my impressions in the field: the square throat patch consistently looked entirely yellow to my eye, whereas the photos are highly variable in this regard, depending on exposure; and the malar feather tract consistently appeared gray to my eye, blending in with the bird's extensive gray-brown helmet, whereas the distinction between the malar region and the auriculars is exaggerated in some of the photos (probably owing in part to differences in the postures of these groups of feathers relative to the light). https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/LongIsland2012 Shai Mitra Bay Shore -- *Change is in the Air - *Smoking in Designated Areas Only in effect.http://www.csi.cuny.edu/tobaccofree *Tobacco-Free Campus as of July 1, 2012.* -- *NYSbirds-L List Info:* Welcome and Basics http://www.northeastbirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME Rules and Information http://www.northeastbirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES Subscribe, Configuration and Leavehttp://www.northeastbirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm *Archives:* The Mail Archivehttp://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html Surfbirds http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L BirdingOnThe.Net http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html *Please submit your observations to **eBird*http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ *!* -- -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] 01/31/12 Barrows Goldeneye (Yes)...
Drake Barrow's Goldeneye just seen from the runway north of the boat ramp at Floyd Bennett Field. I walked out to the beach heading a little south before scoping the bay. The bird was in the company of 4 female and 2 drake Common Goldeneyes at a good distance. [nysbirds-l] Barrow's Goldeneye (YES) @ Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Queens County...
This afternoon I did a vigil on the West Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in an effort to establish the time that the *Barrow's Goldeneye*was returning to roost. After an hour and half of constantly scanning the West Pond, I finally picked up the Barrow's Goldeneye around 5:35 p.m. From my field notes, the number of Goldeneyes seen on the pond from around 3:30 were 3 (all common) and it was only until around 4:30 p.m. that additional Goldeneyes began arriving to roost. Unlike Floyd Bennett, this time I was able to get some distance digiscope shots and video of the Barrow's for documentation purposes. Previous reports from many birders who had the Barrow's in the morning, indicate that the best window in the AM to see this bird may be from first light to around 7:30-40 a.m. Hopefully with a consistent evening pattern, folks who are trying for the bird have the evening option if the morning is too early for them. I will advise that a scope may be necessary to pick this bird out in low light and at a distance. Other notables on the West Pond included Northern Pintails and Canvasbacks. Additionally, near the north end of the refuge parking lot, there were at least 3 *American Woodcocks* peenting. Earlier before my Barrow's vigil, a peruse of Pumpkin Channel (on the bayside) from the West Pond trail, did not turn up the *Eared Grebe*. [nysbirds-l] 4-7 Queens County Bird Walk @ Alley Pond Park...
A Queens County Bird Club walk at Alley Pond Park in Queens, led by Eric Miller turned out quite the crowd with somewhere around 24 folks in attendance. The huge crowd, no doubt attracted to the current Alley Pond Park star, a Yellow-throated Warbler that was found on Thursday by Bobby Kurtz. The YTWA did not disappoint and put in quite the show giving all those in attendance excellent looks. In addition to the YTWA, other highlights included, several Rusty Blackbirds (conservative count was 8-9), Swamp Sparrow, Black-and-white Warbler, Great Horned Owl, many Pine and Palm Warblers, many Brown Creepers, 5 species of Woodpeckers, both Kinglets and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher that was seen by only a few. Despite the good birding that many referred to, I could not help but notice that the number of birds seemed to be down from Thursday when Pine Warblers seemed to be everywhere. On that day, we also had several Yellow-rumped Warblers, and a Louisiana Waterthrush, neither of which were seen today. A note on the Yellow-throated Warbler. Today, the bird was again heard singing by a few of us; the song varied between incomplete to complete, but it was softly sung and unless one was really attentively listening for the song, it could easily be missed. Hopefully the bird sticks around for more folks to see it, as today we witnessed many birders from across the boroughs show up in hopes of getting a look. Reporting for QCBC! [nysbirds-l] Van Cortlandt Park Bronx NY...
A surprisingly birdy day at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx was highlighted by two uncommon species for the area, in Eastern Meadowlark and a Red-necked Grebe (in gorgeous breeding plumage - thank you Tom Burke for the heads up). The Meadowlark, was seen on the Parade Grounds near the ranger station and was a first for our walk. This species, is listed as R (rare) on the Van Cortlandt Park checklist. The Red-necked Grebe seen on the Van Cortlandt Park Lake, is not even listed on the Park checklist for birds and could very well be a 1st record for the Park. John Young, a long time birder of Van Cortlandt Park, seemed to share this sentiment as well and noted just that in the bird log book at Van Cortlandt Park, which is kept outside of the Ranger Station. Other items of note included a 5 species warbler day + the most Ruby-crowned Kinglets that I have ever seen in the Park since I began leading walks there. A conservative count put the RCKI number at 19, with most see in the North Woods, but there could have been many more. A complete list of species seen and a photo of the Red-necked Grebe can be seen here. http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2012/04/birdwatching-in-bronx-at-van-cortlandt.html Good April Birding! Another (?) Yellow Throated Warbler at Alley Pond Park. Eric Miller called and left me a message this morning, indicating that Ken and Sue Feustel directed him to a YTWA at Alley Pond Park. The directions form his message indicated the bird was seen near the weather station, which is west of the green containers on the north side of the path that runs somewhat parallel to 73 rd avenue. The bird was singing loudly, so this is something to listen for if you try for it. Good luck if you go. Re: [nysbirds-l] Alley Pond Y-t Warbler: Any news? = Negative...
Several people were out at Alley Pond Park throughout the day and did not have any luck with the YTWA. Eric Miller, whom I spoke with this evening indicated that there seemed to be a lot less birds in the area today in comparison to yesterday; an indication that many birds had moved on. For example, a Louisiana Waterthrush that we had yesterday afternoon at Decodon Pond was not there today. Also, a watchful eye for a reported northbound Swallow-tailed Kite possibly heading our way, did not return any dividend. Good April Birding! [nysbirds-l] Sat-Sun birding highlights from the Bronx and Queens...
Yesterday birding at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx was very slow with numbers down significantly from last week. Our bird walk highlights included *2 Wilson's Snipe* on the parade ground in the fenced in area; seen just barely before they took off heading in a South West direction. *1 Yellow Warbler* near the lake. 1 singing *Nashville Warbler* in the North West Forest *(a new one for our walk and whose status is Rare at VCP according to the park checklist)* a couple of *Warbling Vireos* and *1* *Baltimore Oriole* on the way out of the Forest on the bridle path. No sign of the breeding plumage *Red-necked Grebe* that we had last week on the VC lake although I had received field reports that the bird was seen on Thursday. I continued birding all day in the Bronx doing quite a bit of hiking while exploring some areas that I had not birded before. Some birds of note that I had included: *Clapper Rail*, *21 Greater Yellowlegs*, *3 Lesser Yellowlegs* and *1 Short-billed Dowitcher* all seen in the Pelham Bay/Orchard Beach area. Today: This morning, I birded Jacob Riis Park, Fort Tilden, Floyd Bennett Field *(very brief)* and Breezy Point where the only highlight was a *Prairie Warbler*along the 4 wheel drive trail to the beach at Breezy Point. Later, I ended up at Alley Pond Park where I teamed up with Eric Miller and we tried our best to bird the park before the rain intensified. Highlights included: *1 Worm Eating Warbler *seen near the rest rooms, *2 Palm Warblers (Yellow**)*, *1* *Prairie Warbler *seen near Turtle Pond and a *Blue-headed Vireo* seen near the green bins around the adventure course area. Also, we looked and listened unsuccessfully for the Yellow-throated Warbler that was reported there yesterday. Good Earth Day Birding!
