I haven't tried it but I think the public transport routing works only with
PTv2, and many public transport routes use the old schema.

Re: Release of OsmAnd 3.0. imminent?

2018-05-13 Thread nickjohnstonsky
Hi,

You can monitor the milestones which the team use for tracking issues to be
fixed for the next release:
https://github.com/osmandapp/Osmand/milestone/9

This milestone is due today, so either it will slip a bit (most likely) or
some of the issues will be moved to the next milestone.

Generally once the team branch for the release (which they haven't done
yet) it's too late to get changes included unless you submit a pull request
to that branch.

Re: migration to a new smartphone

You need to install the contour lines plugin from Google Play on your new
phone.

Then restart OsmAnd (swipe it away in the recent app list, and then open it
again).

Then go to Settings -> Configure Map and make sure Contour Lines and
Hillshade layer are enabled.

Re: Can maps be stored to SD- card?

2018-02-16 Thread nickjohnstonsky
In principle you absolutely do not need to root your phone to use an SD
card with OsmAnd on Android 5.x.

I used OsmAnd on Android 5.x with all my map data and favourites stored on
the SD card.

As of Android 5.x, apps can read and write to their own directory on the SD
card. On your SD card, there would be a directory called Android, and
within that a directory called data, and within that a directory called
net.osmand (free version) or net.osmand.plus (paid version). There might be
a "files" directory within this.

Open OsmAnd, select Settings, General settings, Data storage folder, and
select one of the "External storage" options. The path should look
something like /storage/6419-1419/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files

Also, for future versions of Android, I strongly recommend that you don't
use the "adoptable storage" feature, because it means the memory card will
only be readable in that phone.

Thanks

I'd take this a step further and suggest a 64 GB card. They are very
reasonably priced now. When you use full maps, contour lines, hillshading,
Wikipedia (not just in OsmAnd but with Kiwix too--Kiwix also allows you to
get Wikivoyage offline which is very useful when travelling), 16 GB could
easily be too little space.

Buy a decent brand such as SanDisk. If buying on Amazon, make sure you're
buying from Amazon themselves to reduce the risk of getting a fake.

Re: Offline Travel Tracker

Hi,

If you've activated the trip recording plugin you're half way there already.

Select "Configure screen" from the main menu, and enable the "GPX logging"
widget.

You should now have a "GPX" button at the top-right of your window. Press
it to start recording. The icon will turn red. Press it again to either
start a new segment, or stop recording. Once you've stopped, press the
button again to save the recording.

I recommend Bart Eisenberg's excellent video tutorial for more information
about recording and using GPX files in OsmAnd:

Normally OsmAnd uses the favourites.gpx file in your specified data

keeps a copy in private internal storage.

Navigation is not supported on the iOS version. As stated on
http://osmand.net/ , navigation is an Android-only feature.

The iOS version is much more limited than the Android one. The vast amount
of development is for the Android version. I actually wish the developers
would stop work on the iOS version and focus exclusively on the Android
one. With such a small development team, I think it's unrealistic to
produce applications for two different platforms.

Re: Maps moved to SD-card but app "Kaarten GPS Navigatie OsmAnd" still claims 4,0 GB of internal storage

2017-08-30 Thread nickjohnstonsky
There's a problem in some Android versions where application data stored on
the SD card is reported as internal storage.

You can see if this bug affects your phone by unmounting the SD card and
then seeing how much internal space Android reports OsmAnd is using. Most
likely the "internal" space used will drop when you unmount the SD card.

The developers are damned either way here. They specifically changed how
the orange marker behaves in this release because so many people complained
when it was introduced. There are several posts on this forum about it, as
well as on Twitter. To me, it was not at all obvious to have to drag the
context menu down to get rid of the marker.

The only option is to ask the developers to add an option to control the
behaviour of the orange marker.

This recent discussion about UK postcode files might help:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/osmand/L2wnV3YWyGg

Postcodes are generally missing because they haven't been added to
OpenStreetMap.

(Aside: with GPS devices now so prevalent I really wish we could break the
mindset of using postcodes as a means of finding a physical location. Using
latitude and longitude is generally only about 2-3x longer than a postcode
but identifies a precise location, unlike postcodes. Of course there are
issues like what datum you use, what format you use for degrees, and
whether you quote latitude or longitude first and so on, but this still
seems preferable to relying on proprietary data that's specific to a single
country, and that is designed to help deliver mail, not identify precise
physical locations.)

As for speed cameras, I understand that there have been some complaints
about insufficient warning, and that speed cameras represented using
enforcement relations are not alerted, but in general the speed camera
warnings seem to work (from what I hear, I have no need for them).

Please find out if the speed cameras you think are missing are actually
mapped in OpenStreetMap, i.e. is it an underlying data issue or a problem
with OsmAnd itself?

I can't explain the strange behaviour you talk about, but OsmAnd registers
itself as a device administrator because otherwise it cannot turn the
screen on when it is off. (This is useful when you're following a road for
a long distance and don't need to have the screen on--OsmAnd switches it on
when you approach a turn.)

Changing audio settings is most likely so OsmAnd can interrupt music to
play its announcements over Bluetooth.

I doubt there is anything sinister going on. If there was, others would
most likely have reported it by now.

Now that OsmAnd supports calculating elevation changes and slope for
routes, I looked into using Naismith's rule
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naismith's_rule) to provide more accurate
time estimates for pedestrian routing.

Unfortunately, the elevation analysis is completely separate from
routing/navigation. When you analyse a route you're about to take, OsmAnd
actually writes it to a temporary GPX file and analyses that.

Once navigation starts, elevation / climb remaining is not available to the
code which calculates the remaining time.

Of course it's possible to change this, but it's a little more work than I
thought.

The developers are working on an OpenGL rendering engine which will support
3D/perspective mode for navigation. It's taking a long time but it's a lot
of work. IIRC there are some nightly builds which use the new rendering
engine here:
http://download.osmand.net/latest-night-build/

As for routing speed, whenever I test Maps.me, it is much slower for
walking and cycling routes, so I wouldn't be showing Maps.me as a great
example of fast routing.

I can't explain why OsmAnd stops recording points--I would double check
your recording parameters (like frequency, minimum accuracy/error and so
on).

As for other software being unable to read GPX files produced by OsmAnd, I
think the correct fix there is for OsmAnd to declare a namespace for
elements that it adds to , and then use the prefixed elements
in there.

GPS altitude readings fluctuate a lot, so when apps like OsmAnd generate
numbers for the total amount of ascent and descent, they usually use some
filtering to distinguish errors/inaccurate readings from genuine changes in
altitude.

I completely expect different apps to produce slightly different results,
as they use different filtering thresholds and different algorithms.

Elevation figures calculated with SRTM data will be different. SRTM is
based on measurements every 20-50m across the earth's surface. Presumably
this has been interpolated into the OSM ways in OsmAnd's maps, so it will
be less precise than GPS altitude measurements from when you've actually
walked or cycled the route (though it also depends on how good a GPS fix
you had).

Hi,

I don't think there's a way to make all the waypoints the same size.

In your example, some of the waypoints are very close together. If all of
the waypoints in that cluster were the same size, they'd overlap and you
wouldn't be able to distinguish where the waypoints are.

It looks like OsmAnd uses the smaller icon for close waypoints in the
centre of a cluster. That seems sensible to me. If you zoom in further I
suspect all the waypoints will be shown at the same size.

OsmAnd has lots of users with differing needs and requirements, and it's
impossible to keep them all happy.

I wouldn't support removing the dashboard--it allows quicker access to
things such as nearby favourites, as well as your search history. Without
the dashboard, it would take several more taps to access common
functionality. Also, unlike the main menu, the dashboard can be
user-customised for greater convenience.

Map markers are similar to favourites but favourites are generally
permanent, whereas markers are more temporary. I see value in having both.
If you don't want to use both and prefer to use favourites for everything,
that's fine--you can use OsmAnd as you wish.

You can pause the recording from the notification that appears when track
recording is active. Just press the "Pause" button on the notification
itself.

Alternatively, press the GPX recording button / widget in the app itself,
and press "Stop GPX logging" or similar. Later you can just start it
again--this will still be one track unless you pause for several hours.

Re: Crisis situation in Mocoa, Putumayo, Colombia

2017-04-09 Thread nickjohnstonsky
Hi,

I don't want to speak for the developers, but I'm sure you're welcome to
use the app. The Red Cross have used it extensively in West Africa and
mapped over 600 km of missing roads as a result.

If you want to use updated maps, generate an extract for the area you're
interested in:
http://extract.bbbike.org/

Scroll down in the "Format" list and select "Osmand (OBF)" under "Android".

You can then copy the generated file to OsmAnd's directory on your phones.

Good luck.

By Sustrans routes I assume you're referring to the national cycle network.

You generally can't tell OsmAnd to direct you exclusively along these
paths. OsmAnd will route you along these paths or other cycleways when in
bike mode and when following those paths makes sense for your route.
(Generally, shorter distances are preferred, with a slight weighting to
cycle paths if they don't make the route much longer.)

If there's a specific route you're planning and OsmAnd doesn't route you
along a nearby cycle path, you can add a waypoint there to force OsmAnd to
route you there. In practice, several waypoints might be needed, because
OsmAnd might determine that it's quicker for you to then leave the cycle
path soon after you've passed your waypoint.

To start navigation, select where you want to go. You can do this either by
searching or by long-pressing your destination on the map, and then tapping
the blue directions button which appears.

Re: Custom Rendering and GPX Tracks

Hi,

Glad you found the instructions useful.

Unfortunately, I don't think you can customise the line thickness or style
in the GPX file itself. OsmAnd doesn't support it.

As per the code (see
https://github.com/osmandapp/Osmand/blob/61aaf7146e50b983831da7e2c1c496a402e2fbf3/OsmAnd/src/net/osmand/plus/GPXUtilities.java),

the only item currently supported in is .

I don't think it would be too hard to add another item in there to specify
the thickness and/or style.

Re: Custom Rendering and GPX Tracks

2017-02-17 Thread nickjohnstonsky
Hi Paul,

As David says, OsmAnd can display GPX tracks and routes using a colour
specified in the GPX file itself.

This is useful as you don't need to keep selecting your desired colour when
you display the file in OsmAnd.

To do this:

1. Open a GPX file in a text editor (such as Notepad) on your computer.
2. The file will start with something like this:

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/"; version="1.0"
xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0";
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance";
xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0
http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0/gpx.xsd";>

After the tag, or after the tag if it exists, insert this:

  #BBF5F532

3. As you can see, the colour is specified inside the tag. Use one
of the many online colour picking tools such as
http://html-color-codes.info/ to get the code for your colour and edit
appropriately.

*However*, take note--by default, the colour won't be transparent, so the
rendered track in OsmAnd will be opaque and will obscure details beneath
it. To do this, you specify an alpha value for the colour--that's the BB in
the example above. That's about 50% transparent (it's in hex, so it ranges
from 00 which is opaque to FF which is fully transparent).

To be clear, let's say you pick #31F642 (light green) as your colour. You
would change this to #BB31F642 (i.e. add BB at the start) to make the track
appear semi-transparent in OsmAnd.

4. Copy the updated track to your phone. If the track is currently
displayed, untick it from My Places and then re-add it.

Good luck,

Nick

I realise this isn't convenient, but you can edit your recorded GPX files
to specify a colour int he files themselves.

OsmAnd will then always display the tracks in the specified colour.

I'm slightly bothered by the issue that P Wat reported, but as usual, it's
more complex than it seems (as your comment points out too).

In the UK we seem to read number in road names as a whole number (rather
than sequence of digits) if they're less than 100. For example, for A40,
people would say "A forty", not "A four zero". Same with the M25: people
say "M twenty five", not "M two five". But for A roads with three digits
such as A419, people generally say "A four one nine", i.e. they don't treat
it as a single number.

So the only solution for now would be to change the English voice only for
roads with more than two digits in the name, and hope that doesn't
negatively impact other English-speaking countries.

Really? My understanding is that analysis of GPX tracks has been added,
showing elevation and speed over time. This is based on data stored in the
tracks.

That's not what is being requested in this thread. As far as I understand,
the feature request here is for a graph/chart showing the elevation profile
of a route you're planning. That's very different, and can't be done
without somehow processing elevation data.

It's something to do with the rounding code here:
https://github.com/osmandapp/OsmAnd-resources/blob/master/voice/en/ttsconfig.p#L317

There's clearly an intention there to support "around one mile".

It looks like distances under 1,529 metres (bear in mind OsmAnd uses SI
units internally) get the "tenths of a mile" message.
Distances between 1,529 metres and 2,414 metres get the "around one mile"
message.

The thresholds seem a bit off (assuming I'm interpreting this Prolog
correctly). If you wanted 7 tenths of a mile to 1 mile to be reported as
"about a mile" you could change the 1,529 figure to 1,221 I suppose.

If you have an SD card in your phone and you've configured OsmAnd to use
it, you can change this file yourself. It will be in the
Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files/osmand/voice/en-tts directory (or
similar). Take a copy first :)

I don't know what type of phone you have, but assuming you have a phone
with an SD card slot, and you've configured OsmAnd to use the SD card, then
you just need to connect the phone to your computer and copy the track
files (in GPX format) to the appropriate directory.

For example, my data storage directory is
/storage/6461-6339/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files/osmand. When I
connect my phone to my computer, I can open the SD card, and then the
"Android", "data", "net.osmand.plus", "files" and finally "osmand"
directories. Then open the "tracks" directory and copy your tracks there.
You can create extra subdirectories to organise your tracks if you want.

Pure speculation, but US 75's ref is "US 75", but the other US ... roads
nearby just have the number in the ref, for example 6 or 275.

Re: How do I activate Nominatim in the latest Play Store release?

2016-09-12 Thread nickjohnstonsky
Hi,

I think the online maps plugin has to be enabled. Once this is enabled, go
to Search, POI tab and then start typing your search. Then tap "Online
Nominatim - Places" or "Online Nominatim - Addresses".

"Search by name" is also useful, particularly when offline.

I agree that the other structured search is practically useless. I never
use it.

Thanks

Re: waypoint/marker feature request

2016-09-11 Thread nickjohnstonsky
Hi,

If you're talking about the rather big orange marker that appears when you
long-press on the map, you can clear it by pressing it, and then dragging
the context menu that appears to the bottom of the screen.

This is not very obvious.

Thanks
Nick

England map rendering problems

2016-09-04 Thread nickjohnstonsky
Hi,

I'm using OsmAnd+ 2.4.6 on a Samsung Galaxy S5 running Android 6.0.1, with
maps of England from 1st August 2016.

I noticed that the map around Luton airport, Cambridge and many other areas
in eastern England isn't rendered correctly at zoom levels above 11.

Taking Luton as an example, here's how it's rendered at zoom 11:

There are some gaps in roads, but this is relatively common with
OsmAnd--usually the roads appear connected when zooming in. But when
zooming in (to level 12 and beyond), almost all detail disappears:

I get the same behaviour when looking at Cambridge and many other places in
eastern England:

I don't think it's a map data issue as OsmAnd can still route to the
affected places.

If you have the maps for England installed I'd appreciate it if you could
check to see if you get the same behaviour. If so, I'll open an issue on
GitHub.

Thanks

Nick

Re: Searching for a hike

2016-08-16 Thread nickjohnstonsky
OsmAnd can separately highlight long distance local and regional hiking
trails. Of course this doesn't include all hiking trails but it is still
very useful.

Put OsmAnd into pedestrian mode and then:

1. Select "Configure map".
2. Scroll down to "Other map attributes".
3. Tap "Hiking symbol overlay" and then select "Colouring according to
OSMC".

Trails will now be highlighted, with names shown too usually.

Thanks
Nick

I used these instructions:

These instructions use gradle rather than ant.

Re: OsmAnd crashing since latest (monthly) map update

Hi,

It might help if you can install adb and use adb logcat to see what OsmAnd
is doing just before it crashes, and whether it's the same problem every
time.
