You know That depends on what you want. I looked at speakers at Best buy and
Undoubtedly the big doctor dray machine was the biggest and baddest out
there for $400. On the other end the bose color is a real nice Hotel room
speaker for $129. So it really depends on what you want.
Going Retro I liked my bose sound dock that I left on the train last year.
Boy Some one got a reall nice gift. Any way they still make the sound doc
and in my opinion That was the best portable sound system made.

the doctor dray was a big afair with two big handles one on each side. The
quality may not be audio file but It does play loud. The reason I didn't
look at it is it took 8-10 batterys to work it like the old Boomboxes. Look
up the sound dock II on amazon. besure to look for the one that uses a
rechargable battery.

Download the Player.exe from
http://www.vuplayer.com/player.php
Install it and agree to terms.
Start the player.
Insert a CD and wait till it's recognized.
Pres control+p to export the information in the player.ini.
Open CDEx and cancel the process of searching the data base.
Press alt and navigate to the right to CDDB.
Press arrow down till you find Read from player.ini and hit enter.
The information should be there.
I only very rarely have a CD that the combination of FreeCDDB and Gracenote
don't cover.

Good luck and get back to me, if you need any further help.

CD mixers I am at a cross roads.

2014-11-11 Thread Don Ball
I do live DJ work. I play music for parties and the like.
My old Numark CD mixer is bighting the dust and I need to go in a different
direction.
I am trying to get away from playing CDs live from a CD mixer and putting my
stuff on either a pc or a smart phone.
Some new numark mixers seem to offer some help in that direction.
I can get a mixdeck express which has duel CD drives and USB ports for hard
drives, thumb drives etc..
You can all so plug this mixer in to a computer and use it as a DJ controller.
The other way is a CD mixer with Bluetooth capability that will play audio
from your smart phone.
They say that the transport controls will work with the phone or laptop but
they mention no DJ software to control your music with. I think just the audio
and some limited key mapping is all you get with that mixer.
I need to find a direction. Which deck would you recommend and what DJ software
would you use to drive the mixer.
I know that the mixdeck express will use something called surado dj and virtual
dJ. And something called tractor.
I don't know if you can use replay products or Sam DJ or zello, station play
list any thing that I have had some success with when I have experimented with
software in the past.
I needd lots of help I have an android phone but have know idea how to connect
a Hard drive to it. I could upload music to the cloud I suppose.
I could use an Ipad or some sort of I device but I don't necessarily want to
use I-tunes software.
Lots of questions I know but there are some powerful brains on this list that
can help me think on what to do.

Well, the minimum compression you can do with mp3 is probably 320 kbps,
which is still about 4 to 1, unless some encoders can do a higher bit rate

FLAC is used because its far smaller than Wave and lossless though FLAC is
bigger than MP3 etc.

The upshot of all this is that you get the full sound you'd get with FLAC
as you would with Wave but in a smaller file size.

The joke is that MP3 files - some I've seen - have been done using minimum
compression and so on and you have to ask the question, why didn't these
people create FLAC files instead? The resulting FLAC files wouldn't have
been much bigger but would have been of better quality.

I mostly listen to my station http://radiogeneral.com from Internet

using the Flsh add-on, but there are many programs from which you may open
a

radio stream, including Windows Media.

I have used MaPlEr for years, because it is truly accessible, but most of
all because you may load a playlist, for instance all the files in a
folder,

then navigate in them extremely easy, going from file to file with
down-arrow and up-arrow and advancing and retrocedeing within a file with
just right or left arrow, or in larger increments using Control or Shift
simultaneously.

Finally, you can go to http://stesoft.com and try ShoutOff.

button on the right side of the recorder erases. You press it once and
the message to be erased begins playing. While its playing, press the
same button a second time and you get a beep and the message is erased.
Now, Nancy says that doesn't work like that with her model. Granted all
the recorders I have are 3 or more years in age, but they all work like
that. I guess perhaps some new changes have happened.

Well it may be a more expensive solution but I have never ever had a
problem using airplay at all.

I use an apple airport express as the airplay device and patch the audio

works great!

I am merely using the airport as a wireless access point or bridge and I
can stop start, pause etc. all day long.

HI Chris. I love my sonos system and highly recommend it.

Its expensive but worth it and I do feel it sounds quite a bit better
then most of the bose stereo systems.

Bose is only now just starting to come out with systems to try and
compete with sonos but they are sorely lacking right now and only 8in
their infancy.

Sonos has years of experience and it shows in thheir systems and sound.

Their tech support is excellent! Frankly I don't think you can go wrong.

Hi!

I was fortunate to have had a demo of this radio earlier today and I
consider it to be the best efert from Ccrane to date.

Perhaps the sensitivity isn't quite that of the CC II but the CC II had
overloading problems whereas the CC II/E does not.

The FM band is a killer on the CC II/E whereas the FM band on the CC II -
whilst very good - isn't as good as that found on the newer model.

Sound quality for the CC II/E is brilliant, - if you've ever heard a GE
Super Radio II then you'll appreciate the quality of this model -.

All the usual standard features of the CC II are still available including
line in and out, time recording, weather and 2 metre Ham band etc.

The CC II/E can be purchased from http://www.ccrane.com for $140.00

I agree with Ken. Although what you need is a two in one out

and two or more outputs.

Your idea of having an adaptor with two inputs and one output
might work, but it could damage one or both pieces of equipment.

The best way is to get a head phone amplifier.
This arangment should only be used for inputs, because

enjoy playing, so I don't want to sink much money into it. I do have a
preamp which has the appropriate equalization settings for a magnetic

So I would appreciate ideas.

Subject: My Computer Speakers Died

Hi!

Subject line displays the grim reality, was working away here when there
was a crackle and the smell of smoke rising from the sub-woofer of my
Altec Lansing Expressionist Ultra speaker system so that looks to be the
end of those.

I looked around for another pair but can't find them anywhere which is a
shame as this system has been the best Computer speaker system I've owned.

I then decided to do a little research, Google Is My Friend so I typed
Best Computer Speakers in and found to my amazement a web page that lets
you compare all sorts of atributes for computer speakers, size, wattage,
controls, features and so on.

From the little time I had to look at this page I found that the nearest
competitor to the Altec Lansing Expressionist Ultra speaker system seemed
to be the Harman Kardon Sound Sticks, audio specs seem the same except
that the Sound Sticks only have a low end of 44HZ instead of 40HZ for the
Expressionist Ultra speaker system, nothing to worry about then in that
area, both speakers have a top frequency of 20KHZ.

The only other annoyance about the Sound sticks was that the controls were
on the speakers themselves - volume was on 1 speaker and volume for the
sub-woofer was on the woofer -, yes an annoyance but not a critical point,
something that wouldn't turn me off buy this speaker setup.

So has anyone had any experience with the Harman Kardon Sound Sticks and
what do you think or perhaps you have another recommendation or - even
better - perhaps you know of where I can get another Altec Lansing
Expressionist Plus speaker system smile.

Hello, Everybody,

You may have heard about a rather small player called Tiny Tunes. It
claims to have an excellent TTS engine, which means that it will read
textfiles. It plays various audio formats. The instructions tell us
that it will read folder names. Navigation is accoplished with a minimum
number of controls. Its 75 dollar price sounds great!

I strongly suggest that you do not obtain one. The speech is some of the
worst I have heard in my 30 years of computer use. I was not able to
receive any FM stations on its radio. I could write a long treatise on
what this unit should do as opposed to what it really does, but I won't.
Suffice it to say that navigation and response are erratic. When a few
folders are loaded on to the device, it will likely quit responding,
leading to running down its battery.

I truly dislike writing negative things, but I have to do so in this case.

If you go to the Braille Super Store website, be sure to look for the
company's return policy. Among many unbblievable things, you'll read that
none of its products are warrantied. It gets worse from there.

One involves removing tape hiss and the other involves removing noise

Hi Dane. I agree with you about Sony and accessibility. Besides that
they haven't updated the separate noise reduction module in 10 years to
my knowlege and although it is great there is always room for improvement.

I sure do wish Izotope rx2 software was accessible because its the best
for noise reduction of any type hands down.

I have started to play with their VST plugins which are certainly more
useable from an accessibility standpoint then the standalone software
but even then none of the edit boxes are labeled or anything so I guess
if you have all day to play around you might be able to figure out what
they do but I just don't have that kind of time I shouldn't have to
waste in the first place.

Oh well.

The next recommendation I'd have is Total Recorder though its Noise Reduction
software plugin is an add-on thus you need to pay for it, the plugin isn't
expensive and does an affective job in most circumstances.

And finally, I won't recommend Sound Forge, firstly I think the product well
over priced and secondly the people at Sony Software don't give a damn! about
accessibility with their products.

Hi Tim.

Well I just downloaded the 64 bit version of depoper and talk about a

Also it looks like depoper does a very good job of removing tape hiss

It may be a big winner here and I will certainly pay the $18 for the

I also like groove mechanic but it deeds to be more configurable in

Re: Noise reduction software recommendations please:

2012-04-11 Thread Don Breda

Hi Chris. I quite agree with you on most points.

The developer is awesome! when it comes to his concern for accessibility.

I have used gold wave on and off for many many years and purchased a
full license for it way back in the very early 90s.

I don't regret that purchase.

I have the latest version on my machine as I type this and frankly yes
there are buggs. I don't know of many programs that don't have some so
this is not a criticism at all.

I don't happen to like the noise reduction capabilities in goldwave
myself but that I gguess can be a matter of personal preference.

I do wish that the preview options were bettter designed in gold wave
and that switching presets while previewing would always take effect
immediately, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I also wish the preview button was a toggle instead of having to go
over to the stop button.

I also wish it had a bypass checkbox and also a way to listen to the
output of only the removed noise as other programs do.

Having said all that, for the money you just can't beat it.

To say its a bargain is tipucal british understatement grin!

four noise reduction
modes that one can select are a plus because they
each have somewhat different artifacts that can be less intrusive depending
upon the program material.
This noise reduction plug-in is not part of Sound Forge Studio. If you haven't
yet, you might try a
demo of Adobe Audition. However, for it to work well, it needs some support by
your screen reader as
some information has to be retrieved by means other than an off-screen model.
I had pretty good luck
with its noise reduction in the past, but I don't know how accessible all of
the plug-in parameters are
in Adobe Audition any more. I would definitely take some time with the demo
before putting out the
cash.

you need a ground loop isolater. you can get it at the shack or you use to
be able to. It is a long transformer that kills the ground loop. All hook

A cheap solve is to kill the ground on the computer but I didn't want to do

Subject: feedback from internal hard drives

Hi list,

This is a characteristically longwinded message from yours truly. you've
been warned!!

I've noticed upon hooking up my behringer 31 band eq that if I raise up
the higher bands I'm getting the feedback of my internal hard drive's
motor and some power static. the connections are as follows.

a pair of male xlr connecting to two rca outputs on a sound blaster x-fi
pro external sound card.
Two standard xlr male to female cables connect from the eq to two
nearfield active studio monitors, adam audio a7x's.

The power is grounded on all three-pronged plugs. I have an internal
soundcard which is an m-audio delta 1010 lt. That's the audio side of
things, here comes the computer side of the equation.

a thermaltake atx mid-tower case holds an asus wd5 delux motherboard,
don't quote me on the exact name. The hard drives, there are 3, are all
sata 2 drives, 2 500 gb drives and a 1.5 tb drive. The two 500 gb drives
are a few years old, they make more noise than the 1.5 tb drive. The catch
is that one of them is my main drive for program files and the like, so I
don't want to put it in an enclosure. The other two could be taken out and
enclosed.

My main concern is editting, the feedback won't get through to the digital
transfers, but I'm not sure if I can deal with this high pitched noise,
it's a high b-flat. I'm wondering if anyone has run into this and what a
good solution might be?

Total recorder is a lite featured editor compared to goldwave. I use my

If I fix a cd I make a coppy of the cd to back it up.
I would say that Tooth paste is the most unlikely method of cleaning a

Armerall works but who knows how much dust you will trap on the cd at a

I am new on this list. I am trying to use Roxio easy-cd-creator version

recognized when the cd is playing on a standard CD player. If the

Any one have an idea what the problem might be?

 Hi Joanne.

You can't play Bard books on the PC. This is done on purpose so they
 can't
be copied for others not registered with Bard to use.

When your friend gets his player, he'll need either a flash drive or blank
cartridge to put the book on in order to play it in the NLS player.

If you have more questions, send 'em on.

High Randy,
Below this message, are instructions on how to do this and a link for where
to get the updates.
My best regards.
  John.
---
The Bookshelf Upgrade

You might want to download several books or magazines to a flash drive and
then listen to any of them in some random order. To do this, your player
must contain a software upgrade that includes the ability to bookshelf
books. Here are the steps needed to upgrade a library digital book player
to the latest software:
Obtain the latest software from the NLS web site:
http://www.loc.gov/nls/DTBM/ . There appear on the web page two links. I
suggest you try the first link. If this does not work, return to the page
and download the second link.
After you click the link from the web site and download the file to your
computer, extract (unzip) this file onto a flash drive (thumb drive, etc.)
so that the directory upgrade appears in the root directory of the
drive. This procedure is exactly the same as you use to download a book.
Turn on the player.
Insert the flash drive containing the software into the USB port of the
player.
The player will announce Upgrading your player's software.
Wait until the upgrade is complete and the player restarts (about 10
seconds), then remove the flash drive.
The upgrade will only occur if the player's version is older than the
version of the software on the cartridge; reinserting the cartridge will not
repeat the upgrade.

You now can erase the files from the flash cartridge that you downloaded to
undertake this upgrade and use the flash cartridge to download books and
magazines.

To employ the bookshelf feature, turn the player on. Press and hold the
Play/Stop button until you hear the narrator announce the activation of the
bookshelf feature. Continue to hold down the Play/Stop button and press
either the FF or the RW arrow-shaped key to either side of the Play/Stop
button. As you push and release these keys, the player will announce the
next title on the flash drive. Once you get to the end of the titles saved
on the drive, you must utilize the other direction key to toggle back
through the titles. In other words, you cannot continue to use only the FF
or the RW key to toggle through the titles in a circuit-type action.
Release the Play/Stop button when you reach the item to which you desire to
listen.

Use an audio editor like Sound Forage or Gold Wave to record your talking

Convert them to .MP3 with Switch and or any other audio file converter.
Then copy it to the cartridge, and there you are.
Now all you have to do is, put the cartridge in the player and go to town
 listening to it!

 Hello Tom,
Lock me up and throw away the key!
When I was only 10 years of age, I received a talking book record
player and a C-77 talking book cassette player.
I was told that you couldn't play music tapes and records on those
 machines.
But I got away with doing that with both of them.
The only thing with the record player, you couldn't play 45 and or 78
records on them because there wasn't any speed positions for those 2
 speeds.
But you were able to play 33 and a third record LP's without any
 problems at all!
And I did, and enjoyed it too!
So again, lock me up and throw away the key!
 My best regards.

I would imagine that if you speak with someone from a library, they're
naturally gonna tell you that you can't play anything on these players
but books; it's like (in the old days)..folks would sometimes say you
weren't supposed to play anything but talking book records on the old
talking book players! I've never really heard a definitive answer for
that one; all I know is: people used to do it all the time (played
their records on the talking book machines)..now it might be a thing
where..the needles were bigger..and the grooves in the old talking book
records were bigger; I don't know for sure..but oh yeah..playing record
albums on talking book machines was a practice that people did a lot!
But I'm fairly certain that..if one had talked with their
librarian..I'm sure they would have said Oh no; you're not supposed to
play records on these machines!

You will need a program that rips, or extracts the audio, from the CD
to a file format like Mp3. CDex, a free and very accessible CD
extraction utility, which is also an audio converter and recorder, will
do the job. I know you can get a copy from whitestick.co.uk, but am not

Hi everyone, I feel rather dumb posting this question to this list of
highly skilled computer techs, but I can't figure out what to do but
 ask for help.
 Let me explain this situation.
I received a cd from a friend which contains music copied from a
real-to-real tape. It is just one 45-minute long file with no separate
tracks. My plan is to copy this cd from the cd drive to a folder in
the my music directory, then I will import this file to goldwave, and
make 10 tracks, one for each song on this disk, and them do more
editing as needed. This was not a commercial disk and I don't think it
 is copy protected.
However, since there is no file name, other than track1, I don't know
how to copy the material. When I go to copy this long file to the
clipboard, all that copies and pastes is track 1, shortcut. I have
winamp 5-something, and windows media. I tried copying or sending this
long file to the designated folder, but all that coopies is the
 shortcut name.
What am I doing wrong, or what do I need to do to correct this.
 Thank you.
 Vinny

This is not my understanding of how USB drives work. I tried to find a
good reference to point to but I couldn't find one because I got so many
hits for utilities to create the equivalent of a recycle bin on a USB
drive. I'm pretty confident that Windows doesn't place a recycle bin on
your USB drive or your Zen Stone. I know I've never seen one on any of
my USB drives, and I've never mysteriously lost space on a USB drive to
a hidden recycle bin. I've also never had the problem where the Zen
Stone would play files that I had deleted.

Have you tried a hard reset on your Zen Stone, i.e. using a pin to press
the pin hole reset button? There may be a problem with your running
firmware. It looks like someone deleted the beginning of the thread
below, but I think I heard you say that reformatting the Zen Stone
temporarily fixes the problem. If resetting the Zen Stone doesn't take
care of it, you might try updating the FW on the Zen Stone. I haven't
done this in a while, but I think there are several ways to do this,
i.e. use Creative Media Lite or download a FW updating executable.

I'm also no filesystems expert, but I would think removing you're Zen
Stone without using the safely remove option could result in the
corruption of your Zen Stone's filesystem. I would think that once your
filesystem was corrupted, results would be unpredictable as they say,
and you could definitely be seeing the symptoms of such a corruption.

Good luck!

can't be seen when you look for it, and you'll have all those deleted
files taking up storage space. Thank you Bill Gates!

Whether you safely remove the player or not has nothing to do with
this problem. Not safely removing your player causes some other more
 serious problems though.

You may have to reformat your player to get rid of the current
*deleted* files, but it shouldn't be a problem anymore if you delete
 them as described above.

Another method you may consider, what about using the Test write mode in
the burning application you're using? In this mode, the drive does a write

this is handy for checking to see if there are any errors when writing to

microphone level. Is there any way I can independently turn down the
synthesizer level to match the mic level?

Re: Suggestions on a player please:

2009-05-02 Thread Don Breda

Hi Steve.

Yes your right of course and I wish there was a small utility to just
convert the bm file to a real playlist.
While the solution Chris suggests isn't a bad one it doesn't eliminate
the work of combining each separate lplaylist file created with Chris's
aproach in to a real playlist.

Yes I could keep them all in a folder and use file manager to click on
each different playlist file but I want a solution that just creates a
real playlist that gets appended to by the mere press of a key
combination such as when adding a bookmark.

Well I have beaten this thread to death at this point and may just write
the winamp authors with the suggestion.

Not a big deal its not the end of the world.

Not really. The two file formats are not identical, although the
bookmark file does contain a URL that Winamp can use as a playlist
entry. The other line, the second line of the pair that make up a
bookmark entry, is garbage to Winamp when parsing playlists. If I
knew just a little more about where to find the URL or track filename,
for that matter, of the currently playing element, a JAWS script could
be written to add it to a playlist file of choice, I'm reasonably
sure.

Suggestions on a player please:

2009-05-01 Thread Don Breda
I am wondering if there is a player out there that has the feature of
adding the currently playing stream to a playlist probably a menu choice
or particular keystroke.

I want to be able to find radio streams and while listening to a stream
hit a keystroke and have it automatically added to a playlist.

GS player for windows had this feature but I can't find that program
anymore.

Is there another player out there that has this feature?

Thanks in advance.

Not what I want.

Looking for gs player win32 version please:

2009-04-30 Thread Don Breda
Does anyone have an old copy of gsplayer win32 version laying around
they could email me?

I have looked on the net and can only find the pocket pc and smart phone
versions of it now.

It was made by green software.

I want the old windows version since it is the only player I know of
that can take the currently playing stream and add it to a playlist with
one keystroke.

Most players require you to add urls manually to playlists and this one
did it automatically for you saving much time and effort when creating
playlists with lots of streams.

If there is another player that does this by all means let me know.

Thanks.

Hi I have burned a john Horton album to a cd that someone had uploaded.
The cd burned fine and I burned it using Nero and just told it to make a

 Well everything was fine.
But then I go to play the disk all of the tracks are there but it seems

Cause no matter what cd player I use I have no audio on any of the tracks
and the disk says that they are all there.
So what do I have to do so that this will work correctly?
I am using Nero seven and windows xp and have never had this come up
 before.
Now these are mp3 files and they play in winamp just fine when I am
 playing
them off of the hard drive but as for the disk that they are burned on
 forget it.
So how can this be and what is causing this any ideas?

  Hello all,

Is anyone using Digital Jukebox with any success?

I purchased it, but I'm not having very good luck with it. If someone could
contact me off list, I have nation-wide long-distance, so maybe we could
chat and see what my problem is. I suspect the problem is me, but I think
  I'm correctable.

  Thanks much.

And here is the link to download the latest version. This just came out a

External recording / playback controlers:

I am wondering if there is a controler you can buy such as the old
shuttle pro or something like that which would allow one to control a

I know that goldwave will support game controlers and studio recorder
supports the plextalk controler but is there one controler I can buy
that would work with all of those programs to play pause record, stop etc.?

Subject: problems burning .wma files to CDR disks

 Hi all,

I've just joined this list in order to see if any members can assist me in
 solving the following problem.

I'm using a computer running windows XP as its OS which is also loaded
 with
Office XP and Supernova Access Software.

I am trying to burn files which have been downloaded to the computer on to
CDS to play in a normal CD player. I thought the problem was that I was
writing the files to CDRW disks, so I went out and purchased some CDR
 disks.

However before that, I had tried to burn files onto CDRW disks using a
 trial
of Nero burning Rom version 9 and the files had reached the disks
 although,
at that time I was not certain that I was using the wrong disks. When I
went to purchase Nero 9, the local PC world only had Roxio Easy Media
Creator 10 in stock, so I have purchased that instead. However, even
 though
I have converted the files I wish to put onto CDs from .MP3 to .WMA I
 can't
seem to get them to burn to CDR, when as I said, they used to be able to
 be
written to CDRW but I couldn't play them on a standard CD player.

If anyone can work out what I am doing wrong please could you explain.
Thank you in advance for any help, and please note that the files I wish
 to
put on CD are files publicly available from the website of the church I
attend, and I am recording them with the permission of members of the
 church
 purely for personal use.

Studio recorder question:

2008-11-05 Thread Don Breda

Hi Listers.

In studio recorder if you drop markers with the left or right bracket
keys and you find they need to be moved slightly, how is this done?

I read the entire manual and didn't see mention of a way to move a
marker or would you just use scrub at that point?

P.S. does anyone know anything about the Plextalk RE11 remote control
for studio recorder?

I am looking for a remote control unit that I could preferrably use with
all recording software such as goldwave, sound forge stuido rerecorder etc.

Is this a fantacy?

 Subject: roxio question

hello friends, i have been using roxio for quite some time now and have
never really had any problems with it, however, today i have been trying
 to
record a file on to a disk using roxio, as i commence recording the disk
pops out, and a message comes up saying parameter is incorrect what
 does
that mean, a few days ago i acquired a pack of blank audio Cd's they
weren't my usual brand, in fact they were a very cheap brand, i have tried
four of the batch and the same message keeps coming up, is it the fault of
the disks or am i not doing something i should be doing, any help will be
gratefully accepted, regards from ireland, joe.

Re: Mackie help please:

2008-10-29 Thread Don Breda

Hi Marty.

Well if it would be possible I would like to chat with you on the phone
about it.

Of course I would not want you to incur any expense for the call.

I would like to review the controls with you and go over some of the
routing functions if possible.

Contact me off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we can continue if your
willing.

Thanks in advance.

Don

Having received no answer to the m-audio emu0202 question I figured I
would try another one.

Anyone on the list with a Mackie 802 mixer that could give me a few
pointers please?

Even if you have a bigger Mackie mixer that would probably work but if
you have the 802 that would be ideal.

Let me know off list if you can ad [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we can take it
from there.

Thanks in advance.

Don
