Hi Paul,

Check your printer driver. If you're on Windows, it might be that
you're using some Windows auto-installed driver for your printer
which does not work (in this case you are likely to have several
drivers installed for the printer). Choose the correct Epson driver
or re-install it. I have seen this happen on a couple of computers.

I paid app.. 1180 USD incl. CF-cards, for it.
That's the total cost - just about.

That's in average 52 shots every day.
Each shot cost me 0,4 USD or 4.4 cents
That's 2.3 USD every day. Something like 5 cigarettes every day (Danish

 I don't smoke BTW.

If I had used film and my MZ-S this figuring would have been very different:

I would have taken only 33 % of the number of shots = 15.000 shots
I would have been able to use the camera for 29 more months before it got
obsolete, reducing the cost of the camera to 50%.
I would have used 417 films at a total cost of app. 6000 USD
Each shot would have cost me app. 0.5 USD, which is about 10 times the cost
 of a digital shot !
In total I would have spent app. 7000 USD.

 About selling photographs:
I believe the *ist D did pay for itself - a couple of times actually,
during it's 29 months of hard labour.
If I had used film I would have lost money - I guess I would have spent
perhaps 3000-4000 USD, that no one but me, would have had to pay.
No wonder digtal cameras are so popular.

Soon I will (almost) retire the *ist D.
It will serve as a back-up body - or my wide angle body, when ever I use two
bodies simultaneously - one wide angle lens and one tele lens.

The final economics of the K10D will no doubt be even better than described
above, since the camera is less expensive and more ressourcefull
(67% more pixels in each shot and Shake Reduction will probably mean, that I
 will sell more photographs).
The only REAL BIG DOWNSIDE: I will certainly miss TTL-flash!!!

Why close a school because of two inches? To make sure the kids don't have
fun in the schoolyard?

I have good news today. Now we have about four inches here, and it is still
snowing. It feels good, mainly because it makes me relax a bit about the
world climate (don't get me wrong I'm still worried). But also because the
reflections from the snow gives more light. We will not see the sun here
until the 12th of February. With no snow, it becomes very dark at this time
of year. About a third of the population suffers from light depressions
because of this. Lack of daylight affects the chemistry of the brain, the
experts tell us. Don't know if it's true, but it sure feels true to me.

But, right now, that does not matter. Now it is snowing :-)

You should come to Washington DC for a snow. Flurries make people
nervous. An inch will cause a run on toilet paper and milk. 2 inches
make officials talk about closing school. 6 inches will close the
city...

Well, that may be a little exaggerated, but it can get pretty
comical. And they have gotten better about snow removal in recent years.

If you click on the thumbnail version you get the bigger version. For

printer problem. But you may as well take it back, the store

I've checked all the variables numerous times, and to the best of
 my
knowledge, they're correct. The color space of both the file and
 the
working space is correct. I reinstalled the Epson print drivers.
 Still
no luck. Here are my settings (PhotoShop CS):
  Settings: U.S. Prepress Defaults

RGB Working Space: Adobe RGB (1998)
  Gray: Dot Gain 20%
  Spot: Dog Gain 20%

  Color Management Policies
  RGB Preserve Embedded Profiles

Use black point compensation is checked
Use Dither (8-bit per channel images) is checked

Image Colorspace: Adobe RGB (1998)

  Print with Preview:

  Source Space:
Document is checked, and ithe indication is Document: Adobe RGB
  (1998

  Pring Space:
  Profile: Same as source

  In the print Box

The preset is Premium Lustre. If I look under print settings, I
 see
Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster (that's the paper I'm using). The
  mode
is advanced. The print quality is Photo RPM and Finest Detail is
checked. Scrolling to Color Management, I see it's set to off.

I'm going to try again, changing Print Space in the Print with
 Preview
box to Adobe 98 rather than same as source. I'll set intent to
  relative
colorimetric. But I'd appreciate any feedback on the above
 settings.
  If
I can't get anywhere, I'm going to change all the ink cartridges.
  Thanks for any help.

Re: Film vs. Digital - not a religion

2007-01-22 Thread Patrick Genovese
I don't care what sort of scanner it is, you are now making a comparison of
a first generation image to a third generation image.
The sad fact of life is that if you want to pull the best you can from film,
you need to print it optically.

That is so true. I recently had some prints done from 35mm negatives
shot on superia reala 100. I knew the negatives were good because I
had previously scanned them and was happy with the results. One of
them had bagged me a number of acceptances and hon mentions in a few
competitions.

Well to cut a long story short I took these negs to the last remaining
lab who still does colour printing the traditional way using a colour
enlarger, obviously this is low volume work and it is'nt cheap but the
resulting prints were just amazing. The detail and tonal quality of
the print were so much better than the scanned version. There was
detail in the print that I had never seen before.

It is as shame that such skills are being lost.. This guy does hand
printing more as a passion for the art because commercially it is not
viable any more.

other sources. www.kuwait-embassy.or.jp for the Kuwait numbers. There

It's very difficult to find data on genocidal regimes such as the Ba'ath
party under Saddam, they tend to not file reports with the UN about
their illegitimate activities. By the way, anyone who's done any
Social Science, (and I use the word science very loosely in this
context), research will tell you that survey data is not to be trusted,
especially if there are actual bodies that can be counted. It seems
that the JHU never heard that, at least based on the article as I read it.

you can always ask them (and MIT which supported the study) to shut up

   Hello All
Since I am soon to receive my K10D, which will partly replace my *ist D, I
guess a little statistics is in it's place.

I had it for 29 months.
   I did 45000 shots
I paid app.. 1180 USD incl. CF-cards, for it.
That's the total cost - just about.

That's in average 52 shots every day.
Each shot cost me 0,4 USD or 4.4 cents
That's 2.3 USD every day. Something like 5 cigarettes every day (Danish
   price level).
   I don't smoke BTW.

If I had used film and my MZ-S this figuring would have been very
   different:

I would have taken only 33 % of the number of shots = 15.000 shots
I would have been able to use the camera for 29 more months before it got
obsolete, reducing the cost of the camera to 50%.
I would have used 417 films at a total cost of app. 6000 USD
Each shot would have cost me app. 0.5 USD, which is about 10 times the
   cost
   of a digital shot !

It will serve as a back-up body - or my wide angle body, when ever I use
   two
bodies simultaneously - one wide angle lens and one tele lens.

The final economics of the K10D will no doubt be even better than
   described
above, since the camera is less expensive and more ressourcefull
(67% more pixels in each shot and Shake Reduction will probably mean,
   that I
   will sell more photographs).
The only REAL BIG DOWNSIDE: I will certainly miss TTL-flash!!!

Re: 43mm LTD

2007-01-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
With the rebate program going on, I became very interested in the
43mm since the price would be in a reasonable range for a Limited. In
the end, I opted for the FA28/2.8 AL instead ... 40-43mm is just a
little too long for a normal, and a little too short for a portrait
tele. The 28mm fit my eye and desires better; I already have the 35/2
and 50/1.4, wanted something just a hair wider.

If I had a 35mm film SLR, the 43 Limited would be the first lens I
bought. On 35mm film, 40-45mm was always my favorite focal length. :-)

the 43ltd on the APS-C format is a bit longer than a 58mm on 35mm

In some ouf my photos with flash people faces often look a bit too reddish

This makes no sense at all, digital capture has exposure latitude
just like film does which means BOTH overexposure
or underexposure will noticably degrade the image at some
point with most subjects and the widest exposure latitude digital
is still not as wide as the widest exposure latitude
films at this point.

Half of your examples are grossly underexposed. I'm guessing those

Re: Film vs. Digital - not a religion

2007-01-22 Thread Bruce Dayton
If you are shooting digital, many have said to underexpose to save the
highlights. You are correct to expose accurately for both ends of the
spectrum. The issue with digital, I think, is that the shadow areas
tend to show noise more - so it is really best to expose for the
highlights without blowing them out and then darken later, if
necessary.

Half of your examples are grossly underexposed. I'm guessing those
are the digital samples. That makes the comparison irrelevant,
 because underexposure causes image degradation.

2007-01-22 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hmmm...as to color cast, in this shot, the men are somewhat that way
already. I do notice that color correcting for flash shots can be
somewhat like you say. When they are wearing Black and white clothing
like in this shot, you can reasonably correct any color cast. The
other thing that I have found to improve the look sometimes is to
knock the saturation down a bit. It is almost like the extra light
punches the colors up too much. You might try that sequence. First
correct for white balance. Once you have that, then try dropping
saturation until the skin tones look more natural.

As always, a properly calibrated monitor makes a lot of difference
too.

Hello Scott,

No real complaints about the processing. She is a cute girl - makes
for a good subject. Small improvements could possibly be made. For
the shot as presented, I agree with Godfrey that square may be better.
For a future shot, perhaps vertical orientation and just a touch of
fill flash to lighten the dark side a bit. This is not much flash I'm
talking about, that is the real trick - probably 2-3 stops under
compensation on the flash would be about right.

Anyway, thanks for sharing.

RE: A little *ist D statistics - regarding Value for money

2007-01-22 Thread Rob Brigham
I actually look at my value from the *istD in another way:

One of the first dozen shots I took with my *istD (all just test shots of my
kids, then 3yrs and 1yr old) was worth the price of the camera alone - even if
I had dropped it in the sea the next day and lost all of my money. I was
trying out ISO 1600/3200 and the shot I got would not have happenned with film,
not to mention that I wouldn't have been shooting the kids at that time had I
not bought the D and wanted to test it out. Every day's use since then has
been a bonus.

Like the £1000 camcorder I bought 4 yrs ago, and have only shot 10 hours of
video with. I am currently editing these and putting them on DVD. I have just
replaced the camcorder with a 3ccd version from Panasonic, so that works out
£100 per hour of video over the last 4 years. Expensive, but when these are
the best memories of your childrens early lives it is worth every penny. In 20
years time if I didn't have this video I would gladly pay 10 times that for the
opportunity to go back and film it!

Subject: A little *ist D statistics

Hello All
Since I am soon to receive my K10D, which will partly replace my *ist D, I
guess a little statistics is in it's place.

I had it for 29 months.
I did 45000 shots
I paid app.. 1180 USD incl. CF-cards, for it.
That's the total cost - just about.

That's in average 52 shots every day.
Each shot cost me 0,4 USD or 4.4 cents
That's 2.3 USD every day. Something like 5 cigarettes every day (Danish price
level). I don't smoke BTW.

If I had used film and my MZ-S this figuring would have been very different:

I would have taken only 33 % of the number of shots = 15.000 shots I would
have been able to use the camera for 29 more months before it got obsolete,
reducing the cost of the camera to 50%. I would have used 417 films at a total
cost of app. 6000 USD Each shot would have cost me app. 0.5 USD, which is about
10 times the cost of a digital shot ! In total I would have spent app. 7000
USD.

About selling photographs:
I believe the *ist D did pay for itself - a couple of times actually, during
it's 29 months of hard labour. If I had used film I would have lost money - I
guess I would have spent perhaps 3000-4000 USD, that no one but me, would have
had to pay. No wonder digtal cameras are so popular.

Soon I will (almost) retire the *ist D.
It will serve as a back-up body - or my wide angle body, when ever I use two
bodies simultaneously - one wide angle lens and one tele lens.

The final economics of the K10D will no doubt be even better than described
above, since the camera is less expensive and more ressourcefull (67% more
pixels in each shot and Shake Reduction will probably mean, that I will sell
more photographs). The only REAL BIG DOWNSIDE: I will certainly miss
TTL-flash!!!

Regards
Jens

I have Adobe CS2 and use Adobe Camera Raw for all my RAW processing from
the istD.

I seem to recall seeing mention that this doesn't support the PEF files
from the K10D though - is that right?

-

Rob: Correct. But presumably this will come in the next release.

-

If so then presumably the obvious answer is to use DNG (think I have
seen lots of people doing that) and pass this through Camera RAW - I
really don't want to learn another tool in the first instance having got
used to this one. If doing this, do I need to do anything special to
calibrate Adobe RAW for the DNG files from the K10D?

-

DNG files from the K10D seem to come up in ACR just fine. The Auto
settings work as they did before, or you can set manually.

Re: K10D pre-release firmware 1.10 now wireless flash

2007-01-22 Thread Patrick Genovese
I don't think that's the case since I can create banding whenever I want it.

Long exposures even at moderate ISO are quite prone to it...
Admittedly it is easy to hide by pulling down the shadows a little
bit. But it can sometimes limit you wrt the sort of manipulation you
can perform on an image.

It is especially visible when the scene being photographed is
naturally weak in the blue channel such as tungsten or street
lighting. If you try to adjust the w/b to get realistic colours the
banding will show up. This sort of scenario is pretty extreme so in
practice it is not a severe limitation but imho it should be fixed.

Firstly, I don't have it. By reputation, it is weak wide open, but
lovely stopped down. People who have it started writing about the
three-dimensional effect it gives images. This started the whole
discussion about three-dimensionality in the FA limiteds.

I don't have it mainly because I use primes in low light and need them
to be good wide open. It's the only limited I don't have.

highlights without blowing them out and then darken later, if
 necessary.

Proper digital exposure should be biased to come as close to
saturation as possible due to the nature of the sensors' linear
capture and the mathematics associated. Bruce Fraser illustrates this
well in Real World Camera Raw with Photoshop CS2, pages 6-8. So
the best methodology is to set exposure for a scene's Zone IX
highlights to capture the highest valued detail that you want to
retain in the final image. That brings in the greatest amount of data
and exploits the sensor's analog dynamic range to maximum, minimizes
noise at the blackpoint threshold after gamma encoding and bayer
demosaicing. Of course, proper RAW conversion for such an exposure
may not be at a RAW converter's default settings ... it often takes
customization of the gamma encoding curves to express all the tonal
values that were captured in RGB channel space.

Current digital sensor maximum dynamic range, after gamma encoding
and demosaicing, is right around 10 stops with the K10D, which
surpasses most film emulsions handily. Measurements I made with my
*ist DS body showed that it could manage 7-9 stops (RAW format

Some (a very few) BW emulsions can manage between 11-13 stops of DR

Speaking of linear RAW conversions, who's using what? Or rather,

RE: Film vs. Digital - not a religion

2007-01-22 Thread J. C. O'Connell
I think you are mistaken about the K10D
or any digital camera for that matter
being able to match or surpass the dynamic
range of all color films.
Most of them are rated in the linear
range but the color neg films do have a useful
knee that still captures highlights
without blowing them out and this
can be post processed (expanded)
to give more useful dynamic
range than any digital capture
currently available. There are also
low contrast films especially designed
for widest possible dynamic range
for use with extremely contrasty
scenes or situations. Lastly, with
film you dont get the noise (you get
grain instead) on
the shadow end you do with digital
but if you go to larger film formats,
this grain becomes invisible which
further increase the useful dynamic
range of film vs digital.
