RE: PESO: They really are waterproof

I read the marketing, but I've never had the courage to
really ignore the bad weather. But I was going completely
nuts on New Years' day, stir-crazy and maybe a little tired
of my family's company (it can happen). So I put on the 40mm
Limited, left the camera bag behind,
and went out for a walk in the rain. When you think about it, both
the 40mm and 21mm Limiteds have lens hoods that are very good
at keeping raindrops off the lens. Anyhow...

I love that time of day for bad weather photography. People can worry

Hi Christine,
my understanding from my readings of failure stats published in the

offices / importers / first line distributors indicate return rates of
roughly 1% for the 16-50 and half that for the the 50-135 which both

are selling their lenses to wait for the revised version. I have no
idea if that is true and I haven't a care in the world to lose any

saying for the others as well based on an assumption on which I cannot
comment that part of the issue may be due to grease/fat degrading and
causing the drive to go sticky. I would think this is nowadays no

grease/fats to order with almost any conceivable property but I am not

How many AF points does it have?

Not enough (11)

A couple of people during this discussion have poo poo'ed the need for
a swag of AF points, but one of the things I like about the D700's 51
point AF is I can select 1 particular point and with the flick of a
switch the surrounding 8 points come into the equation (think 3x3
grid).

I find this really useful when shooting action and the subject is
moving toward/away from me.

Flick the above mentioned switch again ane all 51 points come into
play with surprisingly accurate results.

Amazing what an extra 70 bucks will get you (the D300 has the same AF IIRC).

on the road. Probably just as well - by the middle of the year I
expect the *only* questions he'll be fielding will include the
  words
  full frame.

Frankly, if Pentax can't significantly improve it's AF exposure
consistency then putting a FF sensor in their current tech would be a
 serious waste of time.

That's simply untrue. AF is not a major issue for some people. I'd
much prefer a high-res FF camera with current AF capability to another
  15MP APS-C camera with state-of-the-art AF.

If Pentax were to introduce a FF camera, it would have to represent
the sate of the art in their DSLR line-up. Otherwise the only people
to buy it would be the Pentax faithful.

Who is Sony expecting to sell their new full frame body to? Do they have a
reservoir of Sony faithful to draw on?

Sony has better brand name recognition for people entering the the
DSLR market than Pentax.

I think it would need BETTER auto-focus than is currently available. Maybe
not state of the art, but enough improvement to make it worth trading up.

But whether anyone beyond the Pentax faithful would buy it is going to
depend on the value of the entire package.

Pentax has to sell full-frame lenses as well as a full frame body. It's been
pointed out here before that the camera manufacturer makes most of their
money selling lenses to be used with the bodies.

The following is strictly MY OPINION, FWIW ...

For Pentax to remain viable, their next DSLR offering has to be as much of
an improvement over the K7 as the K7 was over the K20. I know that's going
 to be hard to achieve.

I think full frame and improved auto-focus speed is going to have to be part
of that. And they're going to have to have glass available to take advantage
 of those improvements.

I think Pentax can be competitive, even a market leader. If that's what they
 want.

I've said it before but I'll say it again. IMHO I think Pentax should
become a 3rd party lens manufacturer.

Designing quality optics is what they do best I think they could
really do well at it.

Because the camera can keep the focus point(s) on the subject you're
following even when said subject shifts in the frame. With the
Nikon/Canon high-point count units you can select the starting point
and it will follow a subject vy switching points as it moves through

spends
on the road.

DS

That 999 was from BH Photo. I just checked and their price is now
1050. I checked on the D300s is selling there for 1499.00.

Pentax is a low volume item at a low volume dealer for you, so I expect
you're paying a premium. Even at BH Pentax is relitively low volume so
the discount will be less than you'd get off list than for the Nikon.
Now I know you like to support your local store, I would too if there

OK for most video camera recorders which never see much use,

Superb gallery, Brian.

The funniest, of course, is the last, Multitasking (seems an odd combo).
Also chuckled at the Shark Crossing.

I was jotting down photos titles to tell you which ones I really liked,
but, ah, my list really got too long. Some lovely beach shots, some great
wall/window/door shots, but okay, I'll try -- these jumped out at me -- in no
particular order, Leaning Ecualpyt (sp/), Fields of Gold, Snake (Bardick),
Lake Ballard (the lake lake shot), purple flower (Isopp.. but liked other
flower shots as well), Jetty, Old Telegraph Station, and the Lucky Bay Pano
(a pano works really well there).

Really great gallery. Looks like it was a fun trip.

I also strongly suspect Pentax doesn't think they can afford it for the

What price point would that be?
Where I am, a new Nikon D300 body can be had for $1569.00, the K7 body is

The D300 runs circles around the K7 (I've seen it happen).

Sure. The D300 is benefiting from both some single-digit body that ate
the development cost for the auto-focus in an accounting sense and
Nikon's overall volume that's paying for the testing, which is what, 8

There are apparently Japanese jokes about the Sony switch that trips

I wouldn't treat it as a reason to *buy* a Sony product, but you must
admit reliably dying just after (rather than just before, or in) the

The K7 is just a shade over $1000 at bhphotovideo.com - where are you
seeing it for $1499 and why would you buy from them?

http://is.gd/6dBv4

I don't get free shipping from BH, so I have to add in the shipping cost,
then I will have to pay a brokerage fee to the courier which will add to the
cost, plus I will have to pay an import tariff.
When it all adds up, my local store is not out of line, and they will price
match any Canadian online realtor on price.
Their price on the D300 is the one I quoted. They have the D300s in stock,
it is $300.00 more than the D300.
By buying locally I also don't have to play warranty roulette with a foreign
company. Win or lose, if I have to ship the camera to the States for
warranty work, any savings I might have gotten by scabbing a camera would
get eaten up.

From: P. J. Alling
Subject: Re: How useful is SDM?

Pentax is a low volume item at a low volume dealer for you, so I expect
you're paying a premium. Even at BH Pentax is relitively low volume so
the discount will be less than you'd get off list than for the Nikon.
Now I know you like to support your local store, I would too if there
were a local store selling Pentax...

Not so. Don's only has some six stores, but they have done a very good job
of positioning themselves, and are quite successful. When we were talking
about the K-x they figured that it wouldn't matter how many Pentax shipped
to them, they'd sell everything they could get.
Don's seems to like Pentax, and Pentax seems to reciprocate. They have
arranged a few very nice little Pentax treats for me over the years.

The last time I was in they had something like a dozen lenses on display,
with several samples of each behind the display.
They don't stock the 200/2.8, 300/4 or the 60-250 zoom, and I don't think
they had any of the FA lenses in stock, but they had pretty much all the
rest of them, including both 50 and 100 macro. I think they were missing the
35 macro too, which surprises me since they know I don't have one.

I don't know what I've said in the past for how much I'd pay, and that's
moot because it'a a moving target anyway.
With that as a preamble, in todays coin, a K7 with a Nikon D300 AF would be
something I'd gladly pay 2K or a bit more for right now.
They may as well pop the K-x sensor into it while they are at
it, as much as I hate Sony.
I have a credit card waiting.

I am still using a Sony clock/radio that I got as schwag from Astral Photo
in 1985. The control dial broke, so I epoxied it back onto the switch.
That was about 10 years ago.
My Sony DVD player hs to be close to 10 years old now as well.
They can make good stuff, but I don't think I'll ever quite trust them
after the root kit virus thing they did a few years ago on some music CDs.

I'd forgotten all about that. My only reason for not liking Sony products
was experience with products that invariably failed within a week of the
  warranty expiring - consumer audio/video.

While I'm probably going to continue to buy Sony A/V products, I do let my
distaste for the rootkit incident affect my computer buying decisions. All
things being equal I wouldn't buy a Vaio notebook.

Fortunately for me things are very rarely equal, and at present HP seem to
have systems which fit our requirements better. Apart from my new toy from
six months ago she who must be obeyed has just accquired a new system for
doing all the household accounts, tax preparation, etc. It's at least as
good as my machine in everything except the display (I've got 1920 x 1200,
while she has to suffer with a mere 1600 x 900), and hers has one feature
that is valuable for a machine which she relies on for financial data; it
has two drive bays, so all data can immediately be copied to a second disk
when she quits out of her financial program.

Ignoring the second drive, and the extra software that came on her machine
(W7 Pro 64 bit, Microsoft Office Basic) it ended up at around the same $800
that seems to the ballpark for a 4GB 17 notebook with Core 2 Duo CPUs.

(Now maybe I get to sneak a K7 into the budget ... :-)

The D300 runs circles around the K7 (I've seen it happen).

Sure. The D300 is benefiting from both some single-digit body that ate
the development cost for the auto-focus in an accounting sense and
Nikon's overall volume that's paying for the testing, which is what, 8
times Pentax's or so? Now that Pentax is doing relatively much better
 than they used to be?

I would really hate to be the guy who has to make Pentax's product

I would spend for the improved autofocus as well. Not sure about the Kx sensor.
I'm happy with the K7rendering and detail. I suspect that the Kx sensor might
trade some fine detail for low noise.

Hi Paul,

There's truly f-all difference in detail (k-x-k20D), in fact if I had
to chose I'd probably give the advantage to the k-x (due to less
muddiness in the shadows). I will shoot a pair of RAW shots using the
same lens on my K20D and K-x soon so you can see for yourself.

It's under $1400 here in Toronto

http://www.downtowncamera.com/index.php/products?page=shop.product_detailsflypage=flypage.tplproduct_id=1381category_id=14

D300s is $1650

http://www.downtowncamera.com/index.php/products?page=shop.product_detailsflypage=flypage.tplproduct_id=2708category_id=10

A $300 difference.

Consumer electronics price curve says they can; I'm pretty sure they
didn't make money on the A900s but Sony does know how to do
 electronics design.

As far as consumer electronics, I've never had anything from Sony
that lasted a week longer than the warranty.

There are apparently Japanese jokes about the Sony switch that trips
when the warranty expires.

I wouldn't treat it as a reason to *buy* a Sony product, but you must
admit reliably dying just after (rather than just before, or in) the
warranty period is _very good design_ from a skills-and-ability
perspective as well as Sony's corporate perspective.

Yeah, what Click 'n Clack call the perfect auto repair.

From my perspective upwards of $1000 dollars for a VCR that's only
going to last a year and a day isn't much inducement to buy another VCR
of the same brand though.
