RE: PESO: They really are waterproof
I read the marketing, but I've never had the courage to really ignore the bad weather. But I was going completely nuts on New Years' day, stir-crazy and maybe a little tired of my family's company (it can happen). So I put on the 40mm Limited, left the camera bag behind, and went out for a walk in the rain. When you think about it, both the 40mm and 21mm Limiteds have lens hoods that are very good at keeping raindrops off the lens. I for one have long given up on the notion that they'll wake up one day and say, Hey, why don't we make good AF and become market leader or at least the hottest shizznit in the industry I think they're making the best of their limited resources and doing a good and passionate job at that but I can't see them having enough resources to actually go anywhere near technological leadership in any single aspect but you have to give it to them that they have a good eye for what they can give to their inclined users in terms of sensible features such as Tav mode, 100% viewfinder coverage, weather sealing, AA battery tray for the grip and so on and so forth. Not enough (11) A couple of people during this discussion have poo poo'ed the need for a swag of AF points, but one of the things I like about the D700's 51 point AF is I can select 1 particular point and with the flick of a switch the surrounding 8 points come into the equation (think 3x3 grid). I find this really useful when shooting action and the subject is moving toward/away from me. Probably just as well - by the middle of the year I expect the *only* questions he'll be fielding will include the words full frame. Frankly, if Pentax can't significantly improve it's AF exposure consistency then putting a FF sensor in their current tech would be a serious waste of time. That's simply untrue. AF is not a major issue for some people. I'd much prefer a high-res FF camera with current AF capability to another 15MP APS-C camera with state-of-the-art AF. If Pentax were to introduce a FF camera, it would have to represent the sate of the art in their DSLR line-up. Otherwise the only people to buy it would be the Pentax faithful. Who is Sony expecting to sell their new full frame body to? Do they have a reservoir of Sony faithful to draw on? Sony has better brand name recognition for people entering the the DSLR market than Pentax. I think it would need BETTER auto-focus than is currently available. Maybe not state of the art, but enough improvement to make it worth trading up. But whether anyone beyond the Pentax faithful would buy it is going to depend on the value of the entire package. Pentax has to sell full-frame lenses as well as a full frame body. It's been pointed out here before that the camera manufacturer makes most of their money selling lenses to be used with the bodies. The following is strictly MY OPINION, FWIW ... For Pentax to remain viable, their next DSLR offering has to be as much of an improvement over the K7 as the K7 was over the K20. I know that's going to be hard to achieve. I think full frame and improved auto-focus speed is going to have to be part of that. And they're going to have to have glass available to take advantage of those improvements. I think Pentax can be competitive, even a market leader. If that's what they want. I've said it before but I'll say it again. IMHO I think Pentax should become a 3rd party lens manufacturer. Designing quality optics is what they do best I think they could really do well at it. They've had several Camera of the Year contenders lately, for the segment the aim at they also design very good cameras. They just haven't produced a really high end contender since the LX. RE: GESO: a change of pace
The Sistene Chapel is special. I didn't get into it as much as I might have. I was distracted by thoughts of our schedule of things to do, and by the throngs of people chattering and taking pictures with cellphones and PS digitals on autoflash and periodic loudspeaker announcements admonishing people to be silent and not take photos. But it was still quite special to be there for a half hour. I resisted the photography temptation until near the end when I decided to follow the adage: when in Rome, do as the Romans do... That's the attitude that got me arrested when I was in the Sistine Chapel. Turns out killing Christians isn't as popular as it once was. We bought boom boxes or cheap cd/radio players for the kids as teenagers. These looked like component systems but were not. The CD would fail and then the whole thing could not be repaired by Sony. That's when I began to hate Sony products, but I did try a laptop 2 years ago. It's still working but the case is beginning to fall apart. :-( They have suspicious product quality. When it all adds up, my local store is not out of line, and they will price match any Canadian online realtor on price. Their price on the D300 is the one I quoted. They have the D300s in stock, it is $300.00 more than the D300. By buying locally I also don't have to play warranty roulette with a foreign company. Pentax is a low volume item at a low volume dealer for you, so I expect you're paying a premium. Even at BH Pentax is relitively low volume so the discount will be less than you'd get off list than for the Nikon. Now I know you like to support your local store, I would too if there were a local store selling Pentax... Not so. Don's only has some six stores, but they have done a very good job of positioning themselves, and are quite successful. When we were talking about the K-x they figured that it wouldn't matter how many Pentax shipped to them, they'd sell everything they could get. Don's seems to like Pentax, and Pentax seems to reciprocate. They have arranged a few very nice little Pentax treats for me over the years. The last time I was in they had something like a dozen lenses on display, with several samples of each behind the display. They don't stock the 200/2.8, 300/4 or the 60-250 zoom, and I don't think they had any of the FA lenses in stock, but they had pretty much all the rest of them, including both 50 and 100 macro. I think they were missing the 35 macro too, which surprises me since they know I don't have one. While I'm probably going to continue to buy Sony A/V products, I do let my distaste for the rootkit incident affect my computer buying decisions. All things being equal I wouldn't buy a Vaio notebook. Fortunately for me things are very rarely equal, and at present HP seem to have systems which fit our requirements better. Apart from my new toy from six months ago she who must be obeyed has just accquired a new system for doing all the household accounts, tax preparation, etc. It's at least as good as my machine in everything except the display (I've got 1920 x 1200, while she has to suffer with a mere 1600 x 900), and hers has one feature that is valuable for a machine which she relies on for financial data; it has two drive bays, so all data can immediately be copied to a second disk when she quits out of her financial program. Ignoring the second drive, and the extra software that came on her machine (W7 Pro 64 bit, Microsoft Office Basic) it ended up at around the same $800 that seems to the ballpark for a 4GB 17 notebook with Core 2 Duo CPUs.
