T mount lens adapters - a question.
The great benefit of sticking with Pentax for me has been the continued use of M42 screw thread lenses. I use them with a small Pentax K ring to M42 thread in both my film and digital SLRs. I've recently acquired for a very small sum a 200mm M42 lens that has a T mount attached to it. As it still has a screw thread, it works perfectly with the usual mount. Is the real purpose of this mount so that you can fit a K mount to it as a permanent fixture, and then use it as you would any other K mount lens? M42 thread isn't the same as Tmount M42 is 42x1.0 and Tmount 42x0.75. If you apply some force a Tmount adapter fill fit on a M42 lens. You won't get infinity focus with this combination. Re: *ist DL?
taken from letsgodigital (excerpts) Pentax *ist DL digital camera review : [...] larger monitor on the Pentax *ist DL which will be available as a cheaper alternative for the *ist DS. Light weight and difference in price is interesting, some 150 euros. This low price makes the Pentax *ist DL the cheapest digital reflex camera for now (August 2005). And the smallest one [...] also lost some weight compared to the *ist DS. This loss of weight is probably due to replacing the prism for mirrors. Normally the prism is situated inside the viewfinder of a reflex camera, but in the *ist DL digital SLR the light is being diverted to the ocular through mirrors. [...] - Auto focus system [...] *ist DL uses a 3-point auto focus where as the *ist DS uses an 11-point auto focus. Also the sensor has become one step less sensitive, which won't get noticed much in practise. The internal buffer has decreased; it's capable of containing a maximum of five images. More items have been improved. The most important one is the monitor on the back of the camera. Pentax *ist DS users couldn't complain about the 2-inch sized one; let alone *ist DL users. The Pentax *istDL features a giant 2.5-inch sized monitor. [...] *ist DL continues with the familiar concept, a compact camera particularly aiming at the beginning photographer. Mixed batch I'd say... I know when I was choosing a starkist for its IR abilities (which I have yet to buy) I crossed out the DL first. Re: *ist DL?
Eric, Check with the bible - Boz's site. http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/bodies/ist_D/index.html I kept my *ist DS camera as I like how it works with Pentax flashes. The main disadvantages of the DL or DS over the K10 are 1) smaller sensor 6 Meg vs 10, and you can notice the difference. 2) smaller viewing screen, no big problem. 3) smaller camera if you have big hands - I like the smaller size! 4) also the DL has some crippled features in the buffer, continueous shooting, and flash. 5) once you know to shoot flash at ISO 200, the old Pentax TTL flashes work with the DS or DS2. They provide a cheap alternative to the new Pentax P-TTL flashes. I prefer the *ist DS or DS2 to the DL, and they are a cheap way to try digital. The K-10 will get you more detail with a 10 Meg sensor. It will add shake reduction, which really does work! And gets you a bigger screen on the back in a bigger camera body. You should also recognize that you will need some computer horsepower, storage, and software. I started with Photoshop Elements to process and organize my pictures. And added a portable hard drive to store/backup the pictures. You'll find it's cheap and easy to save nearly everything you shoot, easier than trying to weed out the maybe's. Regrds, Bob S. best budget MF 100mm macro

Re: *ist DL?
Hello Eric, You seem to be bouncing around between different models. Maybe you could tell us better what your target price is so that we could hone in on models and deals that would work well for you. From a practical perspective, the older models will be slower to shoot and have smaller screens on the back. For example, I started shooting with an *istD - eventually aquired a second. While shooting weddings one really big issue was write speed to the card. Basically it took about 7 seconds to write a RAW image to the card. So the buffer was about 6 images. Now with a processional with of bridesmaids and groomsmen this could be a huge issue. I would need to shoot faster than once every 7 seconds. When I upgraded to a K10D, the write speed for a RAW file was about 1 second - this becomes a very reasonable rate. So the older models are going to function much slower - meaning take the shot and how fast it comes up on screen after and how soon you can shoot again when the buffer fills. K10D and later models really don't have much issue with write speed - a really long sequence could cause problems depending on buffer size, but for most people, not really an issue. -- Best regards, Bruce Friday, June 25, 2010, 7:59:48 AM, you wrote: EW On Jun 25, 2010, at 10:36 AM, Bob Sullivan wrote: Check with the bible - Boz's site. http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/bodies/ist_D/index.html EW Thanks, Bob. Re: *ist DL?
I was actually more trying to help Eric understand where some of the big differences between older and newer models were. Image quality is much more subjective and so is AF speed and so on. When I go back and pick up my *istD and compare it to the K10D, K20D or K-x - what immediately jumps out at me is the slower speed of shooting (shot, write, review - including waiting on full buffer sometimes) and the tiny review screen. Most other aspects don't bother me nearly as much. -- Best regards, Bruce Friday, June 25, 2010, 10:22:23 AM, you wrote: BS Eric and Bruce, BS I never had much of a problem with the *ist Ds and continuous shooting. FS Friday OT hi-fi
My old school high end system has to go now, too =( All best offer since I don't want to waste time researching foreign market prices in case noone cares for any of this stuff (which I reckon will be the case) Revox B77 Mk II, fully functional, optical condition very good except the plastic hood (back panel one side broken off as typical for this model, front panel has a hole drilled for pen access to the counter reset button. Comes with several tapes, full and half size on Revox and 3rd party reels Revox B285, optical condition very good, fully functional but turns itself on from time to time. Tech docs for this unit are still available, according to some Danish guy on a hi-fi forum a capacitor has to be replaced somewhere. The nice thing about the B285 is it is modular so it comes apart for repair very easily. I used it with a switched power strip so this behavior didn't bother me much. Alpine AL-90 cassette deck, hewn from a solid block of lead or so it feels. Looks fine, left channel level indicator needle will not recede to zero position but only 5% above in ongoing use, this is a typical issue with this model. Akai DS-5 line switch Sony A-D converter, will post model later. Kiron 105/2.8 (Also sold as a Lester Dine or Vivitar) is probably your best bet for reasonably cheap and good. The Kiron and Vivitar versions can be had as A lenses, but not usually for sub-$100. Toine For those that don't already know it, the Olympus Varimagni fits perfectly on Pentax DSLRs. Regarding the original question, we should probably define our terms. What do YOU mean by Macro. A lot of zooms have macro settings but only get you to 1:4 or 1:5. Are you needing 1:1? 1:2? Or are you thinking of zoom type macro? Also, not sure what camera this is for, but the Green Button doesn't really slow you down (much at all) assuming you understand the different modes and menu settings to take advantage of them. I don't think the A price premium is worth it, especially for a true macro lens. My main macro lenses are all non-A: S-M-C Takumar 50mm f4, Tamron SP 90mm f2.5 (can be used with the SP 1.4x or 2x teleconverter to get closer than 1:2), and the legendary Vivitar 90mm f2.5 (Bokina) - also a 1:2 macro but has a matched 2x multiplier to get to 1:1. I think the Tamron is the best bang-for-the-buck macro for a Pentax DSLR, but it is still going to run you $125-150 and another $45-50 for the 2x SP converter. Under $100 for a true macro is possible, but unlikely. Have you considered a normal prime (like a 100mm f2.8) in conjunction with an automatic extension tube? If you use achromat (not your el-cheapo close-up filters) you can get some great results. Here's a handheld shot I made with a Pentax-F 70-210mm (non-macro zoom) with a 48mm Canon 450 screw-in achromat. Some people say that the Canon 450 is an others that it is not an achromatic. I have two (both in 48mm filter size) and I think that one is an achromat and one is not! Both of these were handheld at the 70mm setting, but would have benefited from tripod mounting and perhaps use of the focusing stage. Yes. You won't get any more automation, (T mounts are basically just machined metal), but if you're using K mount lenses it's more convenient. If it's your only K mount lens it will be less so. I think a guitar can only give you some of that if you regularly practice in a group/buddy/friend context I don't know if any of the above helps but I know I would choose photography again any day even though I consider myself at best very modestly gifted. Re: PESO - Lower Falls
I wish I could have done as you suggested. Yosemite has lots of trees as well, and they just get in the way sometimes. From that same location you can see both upper and lower falls, but can't get a real nice shot of them - perhaps I'll post what I did get. -- Best regards, Bruce Friday, June 25, 2010, 2:52:21 PM, you wrote: ps I agree. The mist works nicely for you here. Great color and ps light as well. I might have liked it a bit more if the lower falls ps were moved to the left in frame and we saw more of the mist at ps upper right. Of course, I wasn't there, so it's just a guess. ps Paul ps On Jun 25, 2010, at 1:08 PM, Bruce Dayton wrote: Lower Yosemite Falls. A*300mm and K23mm back from repair
I posted a while ago about my A*300mm being seemingly suddenly unable to focus on objects further away than about 200 to 300 yards, and that I had, (horrors), dropped my A 24mm f2.8, breaking it such that it seemed beyond repair. Well I sent the out for repair and they're back. I haven't been able to test the 300mm thoroughly yet, but the A24mm focuses again! While it will never mount a filter, the threads were completely mangled, and the focus action is just a bit rougher than it was, (if it hadn't been so smooth before it would hardly be worth commenting on). It seems to work amazingly well. The cost was very reasonable. More when I shoot some test shots. At the moment I'm a very happy camper. -- {\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\deff0\deflang1033{\fonttbl{\f0\fnil\fcharset0 Courier New;}} \viewkind4\uc1\pard\f0\fs20 I've just upgraded to Thunderbird 3.0 and the interface subtly weird.\par } -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
