 Try holding a key down.

Here's what just transpired in my tiny little computer room:

The Wife watched, and said: Dubious. Definately dubious.
Then a snort, some headshaking, and she left the room.
I caught her grin before she turned, though...
But then again she knows Mike... :-)

Not in the biblical sense, I hasten to clarify.

the culprit?
Or maybe not enough wetting agent?

Any suggestions welcome.
Thank you.

eweeewe  - how about investing in some photoflow?   I recall it being
pretty chepa and it lasts a really long time - you jsut use a tiny bit.
You don't have the wetting agent in the tank for the whole washing
 process do you?
You should only do it for about a um less than a minute, and agitate it
 all the time.

Sounds like there's also a hard-water problem. Limestone = calcium.

Hard water makes soap films stickier harder to remove. If you're using dish
washing detergent as a wetting agent, hard water would make it more prone to
leaving behind a soap film on the dried negatives.

You need something like a BRITA filter to remove the calcium from your rinse
water and I concur with the recommendation to switch to PhotoFlo as your
 wetting agent.

Re: Focal Length Constriction and RF's

2010-12-24 Thread AlunFoto
Andrew,
I have never owned an RF, but when I see people wielding Leicas and
similar, it's usually with prime lenses.
I have sometimes been tempted to buy an RF as a walkabout, but find
that I can do just as well with a DSLR and one of the DA or FA Limited
primes. To me, the 21mm is just about perfect, with its AOV almost
like a 28mm lens on 35mm film.

That said, my shots are all over the normal range too, and my most
used lens is the normal zoom. Currently that is the 16-50/2.8 which is
a bit on the heavy side for casual and walkabout shooting, but if I
reckon I will need a zoom, I bring it. I find it hard to think of the
normal range as constrained, though... :-)

Re: Focal Length Constriction and RF's

2010-12-24 Thread Stan Halpin
Short answer to your question: yes, I find myself using a fairly narrow range
of focal lengths. But the longer answer is that the range varies according to
where I am and what I am doing. If I am wandering through a museum or local
street fair, I'll have the 16-50 on the camera and nothing else with me. If I
am in a marketplace in Guatemala or Costa Rica, where I am being more
intentional about the photography aspect of my visit, I'll probably have the
21/2.8 on one camera, 55/1.4 on the other. Or 16-50/2.8 on one, 77/1.8 on the
other. But if I am in the Costa Rican rain forest or a Missouri National
Wildlife Refuge, I'll have my 300/4.5 on one camera and the 60-250 on the
other. My general rule of thumb is that for me cityscapes and people = shorter
lenses, and more open spaces = much wider or much longer lenses.

I think we all evolve a shooting style and develop a preference for the use of
certain lenses.
15 years ago, I was in a comfortable rut, shooting mostly 50mm with an
occasional 135mm telephoto shot thrown in. Then when I joined the PDML (12
years ago?) I was exposed to people who raved about their long lenses and the
ability to isolate details in a scene. And others who were equally voluble in
praise of their wide angle lenses. I never have owned a 35mm lens as far as I
can recall. I had the 31mm Limited and hardly used it and didn't replace it
when it was stolen. I had a 28mm but never used it. But then I got a FA* 24/2.0
and started to change my notions about wide angle. I think that is a great
portrait lens! And then I got a 20/2.8. Meanwhile I kept getting longer lenses
as well. So many choices, so little time!

Good to see the economy perking up, but only in pictures. Wouldn't need dental

I think you've got it, Paul. That certainly explains the situations
where I've encountered it. And it is a sort of a temporal moire
pattern thing, which I'm pretty sure is the underlying cause in some form.

Larry, it doesn't seem so much tied to a particular part of the track as
it seems to be tied to some larger set of circumstances. I've seen it
at different parts of the track on the same and different cars with the
same and different sorts of wheels.

If I extrapolate Paul's thinking, it's tied to the combination of the
wheel speed, shutter speed, and the specific wheel design (spoke
pattern). That seems reasonable based on where and when I've seen it
happen.

The panning does other weird things to wheel spokes. I've got dozens of
shots where the spokes at the top or bottom of the wheel look straight
while the ones at the bottom or top look highly curved. The moving
shutter slit could affect these, too.

I'm sure the moving shutter slit does cause some length telescoping,
but I haven't had any racing shots where it was particularly obvious to me.

OT Remebering

2010-12-24 Thread David J Brooks
My sister sent me a document a while ago, written by my Dad's aunt
Violet, recounting events in her life, some family history etc.

I thought that was a great thing to have and am in the process this
Christmas school break into writing my own version for Erin and James
to have. I am including Violets for her but including selected
paragraphs when needed.

Its harder than i thought. Mine is a bit more rambling than Violets but.

I think you've got it, Paul.  That certainly explains the situations where
I've encountered it.  And it is a sort of a temporal moire pattern thing,
which I'm pretty sure is the underlying cause in some form.

Larry, it doesn't seem so much tied to a particular part of the track as it
seems to be tied to some larger set of circumstances.  I've seen it at
different parts of the track on the same and different cars with the same
 and different sorts of wheels.

If I extrapolate Paul's thinking, it's tied to the combination of the wheel
speed, shutter speed, and the specific wheel design (spoke pattern).  That
seems reasonable based on where and when I've seen it happen.

The panning does other weird things to wheel spokes.  I've got dozens of
shots where the spokes at the top or bottom of the wheel look straight while
the ones at the bottom or top look highly curved.  The moving shutter slit
 could affect these, too.

I'm sure the moving shutter slit does cause some length telescoping, but I
haven't had any racing shots where it was particularly obvious to me.

The shake reduction switch moved to off several times as
well, and the auto-focus point selection would move from
spot to SEL and it would not be the point I wanted. Seemed
to move around at random. I even had the battery grip switch
move from Off to On take groups of photos because the
shutter release on the battery grip was against my side.

The random modes the controls would switch to would not
 give me an acceptable exposure.

While I eventually learned I had to make a control check of
all these points every time I lifted the camera to shoot, it
took time and I was not able to make some shots I wanted
because the moment passed while I was still attempting to
get the camera returned to a functional mode.

The rubber eye cup is extremely flimsy. It has torn almost
completely off the camera. Either it should be strengthened
or the replacement cost should be reduced commensurate with
the frequency it's going to require replacement from simple

I had none of these problems with the LX by the way. Every
time I put it to my eye, the controls were exactly as I had
left them the last time I used them.

It was *Rock Solid* all the way.

I also learned it does no good to compose your shots. While
you're doing so, the machine gunners will knock you down and
trample all over you ruining whatever composition you might
 be attempting.

And then they got their feelings hurt when I told them I
didn't care to be trampled on while I was trying to compose
a shot; that I was somehow anti-social not to value the

Don't forget the thread-mount Leicas. You can usually get a iiiC in user
condition for about $200. It takes a bit of effort to learn to load the film in
an old Leica, but they're wonderful cameras with outstanding workmanship. Some
of those old lenses are great, if you like 1950's desaturated color. And there
are plenty of modern lenses available for them as well, including the Pentax

 it a

Basic image editing

2010-12-24 Thread Eric Weir

Shot my first batch of RAW images a week ago on a trip to Pittsburgh occasioned
by a death in the family. With Paul Sorenson's help I've gotten them out of the
camera and onto the computer using a LR import preset he had recommended. I'm a
bit disappointed in what I see. Almost nothing is really sharp. Much is not
sharp at all. It seems to be my biggest challenge at the moment.

That said, I understand RAW allows more leeway for making post-capture
corrections. There are some images I like that are a little to a lot
underexposed. There is one whole group, in which I'm especially interested,
that were shot at ISO 3200. I have absolutely no idea where to start. There are
so many things that can be changed, I have no idea what the names of most of
them mean -- hue? saturation? luminance?

A video that Paul recommended to me -- it was about the preset he uses --
suggests that there are a few especially critical parameters that might improve
these images significantly, and provide me a place to start learning. I'm open
to suggestions about things to try.

Thanks,

I wasted shots because the the camera slipped from Av to Tv

I wanted it to be in.

Either it should be strengthened
or the replacement cost should be reduced commensurate with
the frequency it's going to require replacement from simple
 use.

And then they got their feelings hurt when I told them I
didn't care to be trampled on while I was trying to compose
a shot; that I was somehow anti-social not to value the
privilege of being elbowed out of the way by them.

Re: Focal Length Constriction and RF's

2010-12-24 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
My all-time favorite classic rangefinder is the Canon G-III QL17.
Very inexpensive and a lens which is quite good -- 40mm 1.7.
They go $50 in pretty good shape. Just use a 675 battery for proper
voltage/metering.

Another option might be a simpler rangefinder like the Olympus XA. 35/2.8.
Also inexpensive. A76 battery.

If you would like more electronics with it, there is the Contax T2. 38mm f2.8.
Certainly the nicest point-and-shoot I've ever used. 123A battery.

And you can always spend a bundle on a Leica.

If you'd like the versatility of digital and a rangefinder together, with lens
interchangability, there is the Leica D-Lux for $TooMuch, or its $500 Panasonic
equivalent.

I think I got this with with a Canon G-III:
http://www.brendemuehl.net/images/nufsaid.html

My favorite characteristic is that the viewfinder shows you extra --
this allows you to see what is coming in and shoot accordingly.
It's just a fraction of a second, but it helps.
And it is so light-weight that you can take it anywhere.
The only issue is finding 48mm filters, but that's not a really big deal.

Sincerely,

Collin Brendemuehl

Back to photography, I was wondering if anyone has the same affliction
I do; that is, using certain focal lengths almost exclusively. I find
that 90% of my needs are covered by the rough range of 24mm - 85mm
(this being a 35mm equivalent range). That is wide through portrait -
clearly, I don't do any birding or serious sports work. Recently, I
had a friend told me I should try out a RF for my needs - of course
I'd love an M9 - but I've yet to win the lottery. Any thoughts on
this focal length constriction, and the use of a RF for street
shooting versus a DSLR?

I take full responsibility for the lack of focus, though I think -- I hope --
that what I took to be lack of focus in the images shot at ISO 3200 is at least
partly noise that may be able to be reduced somewhat.

There was one image, one of the ones shot at 3200, that I was hopeful for when

2010-12-24 Thread Jeffery Smith
Fortunately for me, most of what I shoot can be captured in the 40mm-55mm range
(in 35mm camera terms).

There are a lot of reasons to use an RF for street photography, including
smaller size, quieter shutter, no shutter lag, and quick manual focusing on a
spot that you want to be in focus.

As for film type RFs out there now, there are only a few...Leica, Zeiss, and
Voigtlander. The latter two are made by Cosina in Japan. Stephen Gandy's web
site is a great resource for RF cameras.

I'll leave that question for a lightroom user. In ACR, changes to the RAW are
only saved if you click done or open the RAW and save it as a tiff, jpeg or

PESO - Rodin Museum

2010-12-24 Thread Rick Womer
The Musee Rodin in Paris was a disappointment. Philadelphia has the largest
Rodin collection outside Paris, but the sculptures are all bronzes. When we
visited the Musee Rodin in 1981, it was wonderful to see all of the great works
in marble.

Last month, though, the place was almost stripped--I have no idea why. It was
also jammed with people. So, my keenly anticipated sculpture shooting was very
limited. The building, though, has some nice bits.

I carry my K20D on a sniper sling. The controls need stronger detents.

Sounds like you need a looser/bigger sniper sling.

I wasted shots because the the camera slipped from Av to Tv or TAv or Sv
or X or any other mode except the shooting mode I wanted it to be in.

The shake reduction switch moved to off several times as well, and the
auto-focus point selection would move from spot to SEL and it would not be
the point I wanted. Seemed to move around at random. I even had the
battery grip switch move from Off to On take groups of photos because
the shutter release on the battery grip was against my side.

The random modes the controls would switch to would not give me an
acceptable exposure.

While I eventually learned I had to make a control check of all these
points every time I lifted the camera to shoot, it took time and I was not
able to make some shots I wanted because the moment passed while I was
still attempting to get the camera returned to a functional mode.

The rubber eye cup is extremely flimsy. It has torn almost completely off
the camera. Either it should be strengthened or the replacement cost
should be reduced commensurate with the frequency it's going to require
replacement from simple use.

I had none of these problems with the LX by the way. Every time I put it
to my eye, the controls were exactly as I had left them the last time I
used them.

Most of the features that got changed don't exist on an LX.

It was *Rock Solid* all the way.

I also learned it does no good to compose your shots. While you're doing
so, the machine gunners will knock you down and trample all over you
ruining whatever composition you might be attempting.

What was the makeup of the group?
I've done alot of workshops with up to 12 participants yeah a few are
a**holes but most are considerate the pro made sure we all got our turn.

And then they got their feelings hurt when I told them I didn't care to be
trampled on while I was trying to compose a shot; that I was somehow
anti-social not to value the privilege of being elbowed out of the way by
them.

Initially when I ran into this phenom I made sure I got in front of the
a**holes to get the shot.

like a 28mm lens on 35mm film.

My all-time favorite classic rangefinder is the Canon G-III QL17.
Very inexpensive and a lens which is quite good -- 40mm 1.7.
They go $50 in pretty good shape.  Just use a 675 battery for proper
 voltage/metering.

I also shot with the Canonet quite a bit, and really liked it.

I found another advantage with the rangefinder. With a SLR, what you
see through the viewfinder is typically through the wide-open lens.
The result is that the background in the photograph will usually be
more cluttered than it appears in the finder.

With a rangefinder, the opposite is true; everything is sharp in the
viewfinder, and some of it will end up blurrier in the photograph.

For me, the RF made me more aware of distracting backgrounds, and
forced me to better compose the photo to isolate the primary subject.

I heard that the 23rd is usually the busiest shopping day of the year.
I had occasion to enter Toronto's Eaton Centre, the largest downtown
mall, and I believe it:

I went in to buy some dental floss at a drugstore, but decided to look
elsewhere...

Comments welcome.

cheers,

Short answer to your question: yes, I find myself using a fairly narrow
range of focal lengths. But the longer answer is that the range varies
according to where I am and what I am doing. If I am wandering through a
museum or local street fair, I'll have the 16-50 on the camera and nothing
else with me. If I am in a marketplace in Guatemala or Costa Rica, where I
am being more intentional about the photography aspect of my visit, I'll
probably have the 21/2.8 on one camera, 55/1.4 on the other. Or 16-50/2.8
on one, 77/1.8 on the other. But if I am in the Costa Rican rain forest or
a Missouri National Wildlife Refuge, I'll have my 300/4.5 on one camera
and the 60-250 on the other. My general rule of thumb is that for me
cityscapes and people = shorter lenses, and more open spaces = much wider
or much longer lenses.

I think we all evolve a shooting style and develop a preference for the
use of certain lenses.
15 years ago, I was in a comfortable rut, shooting mostly 50mm with an
occasional 135mm telephoto shot thrown in. Then when I joined the PDML (12
years ago?) I was exposed to people who raved about their long lenses and
the ability to isolate details in a scene. And others who were equally
voluble in praise of their wide angle lenses.

Its a heck of alot harder to pull off a great landscape shot with a wide
lens IMO. I bought a 17-28mm SMC F years ago because of that challange
have yet to accomplish that result !

I never have owned a 35mm lens as far as I can recall. I had the 31mm
Limited and hardly used it and didn't replace it when it was stolen. I had
a 28mm but never used it. But then I got a FA* 24/2.0 and started to change
my notions about wide angle. I think that is a great portrait lens! And
then I got a 20/2.8. Meanwhile I kept getting longer lenses as well. So
many choices, so little time!
