There is a setting regarding AF called Expanded area. It controls how the
camera track the subject if something else enters in front of the subject for
brief moments. It is also useful when the subject moves out of a focus

Other than the improved autofocus, are there any actual functional changes

PESO - The new tree

The wind blew down my twenty-old-tree a couple of years ago. The new
replacement celebrated it's birthday a few days ago and I took a

I took a few pictures with different lenses to change the apparent
size of my yard. I figure if I ever want to sell the house I'll use a
photo like the one at the top of the post.

Every once in a while I take a set of photos like this to use as demos
in my photo classes. The video linked in the post is popular with the

I think this a bit sharper than the last barn swallow I showed.

These guys are harder to catch than tree swallows, they rarely perch when
they're out of their colony (or wherever they live; they seem to have a
communal living area under a wooden lookout structure). Once in a rare while
I'll see one or two of them hanging around among the reeds that almost cover
 the entrance to their dwelling:

   http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/06/barn-swallow-among-reeds.html?m=1

As summer progresses those reeds are becoming more profuse and just flying in
and out of their dwelling requires fairly acrobatic maneuvering.

 Apparently they never alight on the ground as their little claws are curved;
their entire lives are spent either perched or flying.

Your swallow trivia for the day! :-)

Hope you enjoy. Comments always welcome.

I hate to say it, but when it comes to working on photos, the best
version of Linux is OSX.

Failing that, when I started I was using bibble, it had several
nifty features, but other big warts. By the time they came out
with their big upgrade, I had invested in Lightroom.

Bibble runs on Linux, Mac and Windows.

One thing that does help on Linux is that now there does seem to
be some functional screen calibration software.

I use LightZone, AfterShot Pro (Corel, former Bibble...) and Darktable
under Linux.

LightZone has always been my favorite. It still is.
Darktable is quite capable when you get used to their peculiar (not in
a negative sense) GUI.
AfterShot Pro is very good except for the practically non-existent
highlight recovery.
Only Darktable is currently supported and its development seems to continue.
There is still some more life (hopefully) in LightZone.
Aftershot Pro seems to be killed by Corel.

Make your choice :)

Several years ago I bought a silver Bessaflex from Stephen Gandy - one of the

Probably, but although OSX is light years ahead of Windows for UI

Well, I do have something very specific in mind. ;-) I'm highly
keyboard-focused, and I have yet to figure out how to easily switch
between multiple terminal windows spread across multiple virtual
desktops. (E.g. five desktops each with three terminal windows.)
Admittedly, I haven't tried 10.7/10.8 to see whether they've fixed my
problems.

On Linux, I use one key combo to change virtual desktops (I assign each
virtual desktop an individual key combo so I can switch directly to it)
and then ALT-TAB to switch between windows only in that virtual desktop.
Does OSX have anything similar?

Looks plenty sharp to me! (Okay, maybe the focus is on the rear rather

Re: OT: Now Mozilla is getting on my nerves.

2013-07-01 Thread Bruce Walker
My Safari horror story is simple: it's an unbelievable memory hog.
Left alone it quickly eats up all the available memory on a Mac OS X
system, any version.

Besides that it used to be my favourite browser client. I like its
bookmarks handling (very much like an outliner app; I organize my
personal info library around browser bookmarks). It's standards
compliant, fast, pretty robust.

Chrome's bookmark handling is like Firefox's: useless. Besides that
it's light on memory, standards compliant, fast, and robust.

I'm personally extremely unhappy to get stuck on the upgrade treadmill,

I buckled under too... for the same reason.. but haven't yet updated

I've allowed firefox to upgrade whenever suggested lately.

 Ok, here's the deal:

The problem with Mozilla started on Saturday, 29Jun2013. Every time I
launch the browser, I get TWO tabs - homepage Plugin check.

 https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/

I have to tell NoScript to allow Mozilla.org before I can see the
 plugins being checked.

*ALL* of my plugins are currently up to date except for Quicktime (more
on that later). I had to disable Quicktime.

I cannot log in to Mozilla.org support. It tells me my username or
password is incorrect. I cannot create a new account because my existing
account is already linked to my email address. I will have to create a
new email account if I want to create a new Mozilla account so I can log
 in to Mozilla.org support.

Searching Mozilla.org, I find a question about the same problem I'm
experiencing. The topic was CLOSED as FIXED 2 years before I encountered
the problem. None of the solutions proposed back then work.

Quicktime - You can't just download it, you MUST HAVE AN ACCOUNT.

Apple won't let me use my iTunes username/password to download Quicktime.

Apple wouldn't let me create a new account to download Quicktime because
my email address is already linked to my iTunes account. I can't update
Quicktime because I can't log in to my existing account I can't create
 a new account.

So, I have disabled Quicktime. When I start Firefox, I still get the
same two tabs when I look at the plugins, Quicktime is not shown.
All of the other plugins are current and up to date.

I'm looking to see what other browser options I might have. It will
*NOT* be Windoze Exploder, and it will *NOT* be Chrome. Probably not
Safari either given the number of horror stories I've heard about it
the problems I'm already having with Quicktime.

 Hi Everyone:

What a day we had. Akira I had planned a visit to the Adler Planetarium
Friday--the same day as the Blackhawks parade. We took the Brown line into
downtown to catch the 146 bus to the Museum Campus on the lakefront. We
waited and waited for the bus, but it never showed, so we decided to hoof-it
and caught some snaps along the way. It's a bit of a trek from State and Van
Buren to Roosevelt road and the lakefront--especially navigating through
large crowds and a strong summer sun. Then while walking along a curb, the
wheel of a street cleaning truck caught a can of some sugary drink and
splashed both Akira and me. I was ready to throw in the towel right then and
there, but we braved on, laughed it off, and finally made it to the Adler
 Planetarium.

It was a lovely outing with my littlest nephew, who will turn 13 next Sunday.
He is so clearly not a little boy anymore. He's one inch taller than me!!!

These are just random snaps. The truth is Akira and I gabbed and giggled all
day making photography a bit of an after thought, but I got 12 decent shots
and I thought I'd share. Not sure which one will be my PAW this week--maybe
I'll go out and shoot tomorrow for something different. We'll see.

Admittedly, I haven't tried 10.7/10.8 to see whether they've fixed my
problems.

okay, so it is much more than just remotely like the linux feature, but you
want some specific behaviors … i am fairly keyboard-focused as well, but not a
purist; i am also using 10.7, so i may not know some 10.8 details

command-backtick switches among the various windows open in one app, and i use
it all the time, but it won't switch to a window of the same app in another
space (what Apple calls desktops); i do find that slightly frustrating, but i
just switch spaces (and if the same app has windows in that space it will
remain active); i usually switch spaces with control [left or right] arrow but
control [number] will take you to that numbered space (you can redefine all
these shortcuts)

On Linux, I use one key combo to change virtual desktops (I assign each
virtual desktop an individual key combo so I can switch directly to it)
and then ALT-TAB to switch between windows only in that virtual desktop.
Does OSX have anything similar?

yes, that would be control-F4 — rotates among all windows in all apps within
one space; if you an dig a visual approach, control-up arrow shows you all the
windows in a space, and F10 shows you all windows in an app

I've lost track of the various UIs that I've learned, and forgotten over

Rick,
Very interesting and colorful.
I can't understand the Roof line on the left.
There seems to be sky between the left most part and the main roof.

Often there's a nice red or pink sky or clouds but not last night. All blue.

But still nice, I think. I'd like to thank that nice tern for making a timely

 Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

From my POV, these count as street art rather than graffiti. Very
nice!
