I'm generally not a fan of Microsoft products, but this one is free and actually works very well: Microsoft Security Essentials http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download It is not only virus protection, but also protects you from spyware (like Malwarebytes does, which is another excellent product but costs $29 to turn on the real time protection). It also does not bog down your system as Symantec/Norton/MacAfee do. Re: F104's revisited - especially for Frank!
I remember an RAF Vulcan (44 Sqn) stationed in Salisbury, Rhodesia in 1959/60 for a couple of months (still in the days of the Federation of Rhodesia Nyasaland) mostly on an aerial photography mission to aid the updating of maps. I suppose that would all be done by satellite photography today. Alan C -Original Message- From: Daniel J. Matyola Sent: Wednesday, February 12, 2014 5:10 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: F104's revisited - especially for Frank! Every aircraft has to be judged by its function and service era. The Starfighter F-104 was an interceptor designed to climb quickly to high altitude and fire missiles at incoming bombers. That mission was taken over by ground based missiles almost before the Starfighter came into service. The USAF tried to use it in Viet Nam, but it was totally unsuited to the climate and mission. It was, however, one of the sexiest designs ever. The Vulcan was a heavy bomber, designed for the type of air-ground missions that fortunately were never required. It was an innovative machine with a unique, memorable design, and served many nations quite well. The F-4 Phantom II was one of the most versatile aircraft ever made, fulfilling several functions over a long period of time. Its Mach 2 speed and ability to carry almost any weapon, made it the vehicle of choice in the West for several decades. I always though it a beautiful aircraft, with its coke-bottle fuselage, dihedral wings and anhedral horizontal stabilizer, but I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Re: When did equipment get so cheap?
I first encountered computers when I was a physics major at Dartmouth College. My math prof was John Kemeny, then chairman of the Math Department, and later president of the college: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_G._Kemeny Kemeny wanted some of the physics majors to work with him on a computer language he was developing -- which turned out to be the original form of BASIC, also know as Dartmouth BASIC. We went to the computer building and did a few of the exercises, but the whole process of punch cards and print outs took took much time and patience. Besides, we had our slide rules, so why would we want to use computers? Kemeny and BASIC went on to success and fame, Dartmouth got some money from the copyright to BASIC for years, and I switched from Physics to International relations and eventually to law school, and that has made all the difference.
Thanks everyone, for all the very helpful comments! The more I research it, the more I believe buying a used K-30 is the camera that will give me the most value for my money. A Few K-30 Questions
I was hoping someone could answer a few questions I have about the Pentax K-30. Some of these are a bit obscure, and aren't things you commonly find mentioned in most online reviews. 1) I know it has live view, but can that live view be displayed on an external monitor of some sort? 2) Is it possible to control the camera's aperture and shutter speed remotely? 3) Is it possible to shoot tethered at all? 4) It's not a deal breaker for me, if the K-30 can't do those first 3 things, but it would be a huge bonus. If the K-30 can't do those things, is there a Pentax DSLR that can? 5) With my old Pentax DSLR, it's extremely difficult for me to achieve critical focus when using manual lenses. (It has no live view, and no focus peeking.) Since the K-30 has live view, with magnification and focus peeking, I would think accurately focusing an older manual lens would be very easy. A year ago, I bought my wife a Lenovo laptop. Apparently these machines aren't the best there is, but this was for very light home use, my wife does nothing with a home computer beyond a bit of web surfing. She doesn't even have a home email address. Anyway, she told me a month ago that the keyboard was faulty, and several keys didn't work. Apparently, the Lenovo warranty is one year, and the machine was off warranty by manufacture date. Eventually, I was able to get Lenovo to extend the warranty to the retail sales date, so I took it in to the shop where a bad keyboard was diagnosed. The repair depot has now decided that they have no knowledge of the computer coming in to be looked at, and now the warranty has expired. Note to self, do not EVER buy another Lenovo computer. RE: Lenovo Computers
My suspicions were aroused when IBM dropped Lenovo as their Chinese manufacturer 9couple of years ago?), and Lenovo started manufacturing and marketing under their own brand name. IBM generally has a good reason for such actions! In Australia, the law is that the retailer has responsibility for repairs to defective items - and , IMHO, a keyboard should last more than a year or so, so it was defective - 'not up to purpose' is the legal phrase, I think. I have a 7 year old Toshiba Satellite that is still running well. The dual core processor and 4 gigs of ram are good enough to support Photoshop CS5.1. It's taken its licks over the years and the pins that hold the top cover/screen down broke off when I dropped it a few years ago, but otherwise I have no complaints about the machine. I'm not a fan of the Vista OS but aside from unduly long bootup times and the annoying habit of disabling the USB ports after downloading updates (re-enabled on the next reboot) it is OK. My wife bought a Toshiba 4 or 5 years ago and it has also held up very well. When I go to get a new laptop someday I'll check out Toshiba - I'm not current on whether or not they are still good. There is a big difference between the consumer class laptops and the enterprise class machines. In the case of Lenovo the Thinkpad is an enterprise class machine, made for businesses. The Ideapad is a consumer class machine and is made for a price point. In the case of HP Probook and Elitebook are enterprise class machines. So very glad you all like the shot - it means a lot. I had been not feeling much like shooting the last few weeks and suddenly looking out the window this morning after Ashley woke me up too early (meow, meow, feed me feed me) I grabbed the K-5, started shooting through the window, then opened it.. fortunately, the wind wasn't blowing the snow in my direction.. but the scene was exciting to me - enormous snowflakes, sometimes blowing sometimes almost holding still, it seemed. Made me feel good. The snow stopped by 11 am ... got so much warmer the sidewalks were clear by 1pm after people did easy shoveling.. but the street corners were lakes. Had to ship something and it was a challenge walking to the post office a few blocks away... but the walk felt good... I didn't take the camera with me - well, I took the little dark side PS but didn't use it.
