Re: Image Sync with KP

I use Image Sync with my K-S2 without any problems (and hopefully with the
K-1 I will get next week). I have Image Sync installed on my ZTE V8 Mini
(on Android 7.0) and have just tried the app on my 5 year old Samsung
Galaxy Note 8.0, which runs Android 4.4. It also works well on that device.
Are you sure you have followed all the procedures needed to run the app
(turning on wi-fi on your KP and then connect your mobile to your Pentax
camera wi-fi spot by typing the password, etc.)?

Re: Image transfer from camera to PC in real time

2017-10-23 Thread Carlos R
Pentax has an app for Android and iOS which can use the built-in wifi of
your K-70 to download pics to your phone or tablet, but for PCs there is
not an official ap. However, there is an unofficial Windows app which you
can use to that purpose. There is a thread about that Windows program in
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/6-pentax-dslr-discussion/346566-my-pentax-wifi-remote-software.html

If you have a Flu card for your K-3 you can also use it to control the
camera and download pictures to your PC.

Re: Is the DA55 slow to focus?

2016-05-25 Thread Carlos R.
Your 20-40 is a DC motor lens, not SDM. Now I have two SDM lenses, a
16-50 2.8 and 50-135 2.8, the 16-50 is fast enough, the 50-135 is slow
to focus, although its speed improved when it had its SDM motor changed
after it broke down. The 50-135 is very good at follow focus, though. I
also had the 55mm 1.4 SDM and it was slow indeed, although accurate.
The only DC lens I have, the 18-135 WR is quite fast, faster than any
SDM lens I've had so far.

Thankfully I rarely shoot action. The SDM lenses seem to hunt less but
they do seem to micro adjust a lot which makes focus kind of on the
slow side. the 17-70 i have is usually pretty snappy but it also
misses a whole lot. the 60-250 is almost always dead on if I get if a
chance.

One of the reasons that I was interested in the DA 55 was that having
its own motor, I thought it should focus more quickly. When I was using
it the other night to photograph dancing, however, it seemed really slow
to focus. It also seemed to need to "hunt focus" more than a lot of
lenses, rather than just snapping to focus, it would rack all the way
out, and then back into focus. My 16-50 is normally quite good about
focusing quickly, but I tend to only use it where there is a lot of
light (at least by my standards of a lot of light).

I couldn't compare it directly with my FA50 as it was in heavy use by
someone else.

Has anyone else run into these issues?

I think it was a bit slow to focus. I can't put one on a camera, as it is
between homes at the moment.

the ones in the original Epson printer driver. You might give it a try

Re: Question? Battery Grip for K-5II etc.

2016-01-28 Thread Carlos R.
I have a Meike battery grip for my K-7, the K-7/K-5/5II use the same
grip. Its build quality is quite good and works really well. The only
difference is that the original Pentax grip is weather sealed, as you
said, and the aperture and shutter speed wheels turn a bit more smoothly
in the Pentax DB-G4. But for the price I paid for the Meike (35 euros)
it is a steal.

El 28/01/2016 a las 17:28, P.J. Alling escribió:

OK, so that's not really a question.

I've been contemplating getting one for my K-5II. Now I had an
opportunity to buy one from same source as the camera, at a very good
price I might add, but passed as I didn't see a pressing need. But as I
get older and less steady, I can't help to think that vertical shots
would be easier to hold steady with a vertical grip and shutter button,
not to mention the extra battery power and ability to use AA batteries
in a pinch.

The official Pentax grip, is still kind of expensive, so I've been
looking at third party grips. I know probably none of them are weather
sealed, but the prices of some a certainly attractive.

First question has anyone here used one?

Second question was it any good?

There are several brands, are there any known differences between them,
(not that I expect a real answer to that), it would be nice if a
magazine like Pop Photo did a comparison, (anybody else remember when
they used to do stuff like that)?

So that last one wasn't really a question.

I guess my assumption is they're all manufactured in the same factory in
China, possibly from the official molds, or close copies, sourced from
there by a variety of distributes, but maybe I'm wrong.

Hell prices range on Amazon from as low as about $30 to as high as 4
times that, and at any price point they might throw in a of battery or
two both battery trays and a charger.

Feedback is all over the place, none seem to be perfect, but then
neither is the official grip.

I guess I'm kind of looking for information, that I trust more than the
usual amazon feedback.

Re: My K-7 is dying

2016-01-27 Thread Carlos R.
I have a K-7 and a K-S2, and the K-S2 is an enormous improvement on the
already good and reliable K-7, except for its louder shutter noise.

A late K-5 with bugs ironed or a K-5II/K-5IIs would be a very good
upgrade for you and I think it fits in your budget.

I think a new K-S2 would also be within your budget limits, as it is
cheaper in the US than here, but if you have spare batteries for your
K-7 that you can use in a K-5/II/s perhaps one of those would be better
for you, especially because the feeling in your hand and the user
interface would be identical to your present K-7.

El 27/01/2016 a las 3:59, Doug Brewer escribió:

Hi, troops. As you can see, my beloved K-7 is about to bit the dust.
It's become a little reluctant to change shutter speeds, and I'm not
sure what shutter speed it's ever on any more. I have used and abused it
for years, and now it's tired and wants to go home.

I can maybe afford,if a client comes through, a used K5, and here's my
question: is it worth getting. I know there have been upgrades to it,
but it seems to have gotten decent reviews whe it came out.

My other option is to spend a bit more and upgrade my Fuji X100 to the
X100S, but that would put me out of the Pentax game. I'd like to stick
around, maybe, if the K5 is worth it.

What say you?

Side school that had gone from 100% white to 100% black in a few years. The
administration and the largely white staff didn’t know what to do, the school
was out of control and on fire frequently and, at one point, the National Guard
had to be called in. In 1975 the federal government mandated faculty
integration, meaning that if you were a white teacher at a school that had too
many white teachers and you wanted to transfer to a school that had too many
black teachers, they had to allow you to apply for a position. I had heard
about Julian. It was an all-black school on the south side of Chicago. It
wasn’t a white school that had re-segregated but rather a brand new school that
a prosperous middle class black community had fought for. I ap

plied, the principal approved it, and the largely black staff welcomed me and
several other Austin teachers with open arms.

I had some great classes and some wonderful kids at Julian. I taught Honors
English 3 and a special double-period Humanities class. The kids and I went to
the Chicago Symphony, the opera and a number of theatrical presentations. We
had a great marching band, majorettes and cheerleaders. All in the mid 70s when
the white kids in the suburban schools were thumbing their noses at those kind
of things. We also had a fabulous football team, and in 1979 we became the
first public school in almost 20 years to win a city championship over the
predominantly white catholic league schools.

I documented much of my time at Julian on film. I have several thousand
transparencies and BW negs that I shot during those five happy years. I’ve just
begun scanning some of them. I started with that 1979 football championship,
but I have many more that I will eventually scan.

In March of 1980 I was offered a job in New York at Hearst Magazine Division.
The Chicago Board of Education had run out of money and had stopped paying the
teachers. We were on the picket line when I got the call. I crossed the line,
walked into the office to turn in my resignation on Thursday afternoon, March
7, 1980 and flew to New York the next morning. I still feel guilty. Today,
Julian is still somewhat better than the other Southside Chicago High Schools,
but the magic is largely gone. The entire south side of Chicago is a mess.
The gangs are in control, and kids are shot on the street every day. A number
of Julian kids have been killed on their way home from school. It’s had for me
to imagine. It’s heartbreaking.

Here are the first of my Julian scans. The way it was 40 years ago.

The DA rendering and sharpness is identical to the FA, they seem to

Re: OT - Camera Store X100s and X20 Hands On Field Test

2013-03-16 Thread Carlos R.
Thanks for your comments, Godfrey. In fact, I have been looking at the
possibility of buying a Ricoh GXR + A12 Leica mount unit, as now they
can be had for a lower and more attractive price and it is possible to
use my Pentax lenses with and adapter. But the bulk of the camera plus
the adapter is almost the same of a DSLR, with a number of disadvantages
at least for my use.

I am still thinking about that option, but I think I would be better
served by a X100 and in any case I want a camera with a viefinder. The
RAW files I have downloaded look very good. It is a bit bigger than the
X10/X20, and it has a fixed 23mm 2.0 lens instead of a zoom (although it
seems an excellent prime, and I happen to find it has a very useful
FOV). The 28-112m (eq.) 2.0-2.8 lens of the X10/X20 is very tempting and
the camera is smaller and lighter than the X100, although I am not
thrilled by the smaller sensor. So, in case I don't change my mind
again, it is a choice between a small sensor camera with a fast zoom
lens or one with an APS-C sensor and a fast fixed focal length. Or, as
you sugest, a fourthirds camera. There some very interesting lenses for
that format, but I haven't liked the ergonomics of the camera bodies I
have had the chance to try (very few, admittedly).

El 16/03/2013 15:08, Godfrey DiGiorgi escribió:

I bought and tried the X10 when it came out, based on how much Cotty
liked it, and found that it wasn't for me. I think a good bit of my
dissatisfaction with it is that I prefer the results from the larger
sensor cameras, but I also find that I'm simply not enthralled by
Fuji's controls and menus, throughout their X series lineup.

However, I've been very happy with the Leica X2, Ricoh GXR, and
Olympus/Panasonic Micro-FourThirds cameras. The larger sensors and
versatility of these cameras is a major plus. Even the Leica X2 with a
fixed mount, fixed focal length lens proves to have a tremendous range
of capability.

The one big thing that the Fuji X10/X20 has going for it is the built
in optical viewfinder for when you don't want to use the LCD. I solve
that lack on the X2, GXR and Oly Pen E-PL1 by fitting an optical
viewfinder when I want to work that way. All three of these are
substantially less to carry than any of my SLR cameras have been, yet
return image quality on par with the SLRs.

undecided, I like the flexibility of the X20 concept (a small but solid
camera with a good viewfinder and a fast wide to moderate tele zoom),
but the IQ of the full size samples I have seen in the Internet hasn't
convinced me that it is the right choice. It seems that its small sensor
is nothing to write home about. On the other hand, the IQ of the X100
looks excellent, but I don't know if the fixed 35mm-equivalent lens
would be enough for my needs,

How is DA 35/2.8 macro in comparison to either FA35/2 or DA35/2.4
(or even 16-50/2.8)?

I had both the FA 35mm 2.0 and the Limited macro. To summarize my
experience with those lenses, I'd say that they are both excellent, but
if I had to choose one of them, I'd stay with the FA35/2 because I found
it better suited for general photography and also because I prefer its
rendering capabilities. It also focuses faster and being faster it is a
better lens in low light environments. The Lim. is better built and has
quick shift, but I think the FA35 is better for non-macro photographers.

The DA35 is said to be a kind of low cost FA35 with no QS and plastic
bayonet, having the same optical design of the FA but half a stop slower.

Re: Tele-Zoom Lens

2012-03-30 Thread Carlos R.

Daniel, of the lenses you mentioned I have the SMC-F 80-200mm 4.7-5.6
Its advantages are: lightweight, 49mm filter thread, internal zoom (the
lens doesn't change its length when zoomed), good IQ (though not
outstanding, but better than most people think), cheap price, metal lens
mount, fast focusing, small size.

On the less side: slow (4.7-5.6), cheap build quality.

All in all, its a good lens if you want it small, light and cheap. If
you need something faster, you'll pay the price both in money and
weight. A better quality alternative is the SMC-F 70-210mm 4-5.6. Its IQ
is excellent, at least on film (not to be confused with the FA 70-200mm
power zoom or the non-SMC F 70-200 4.5.6).

they are so inexpensive that buying a midi converter could be a waste
(unless the Casio keyboard he has is very good); M-Audio, Akai and a few

OT: Question about a MIDI keyboard and USB port

2012-03-16 Thread Carlos R.
I know this a completely off-topic question, but I bet there is someone
in the PDML who can help a friend of mine to solve his doubts. He's 75
and a computer illiterate. I've been helping him to grasp the basics of
Internet and Windows use since last summer. So far I've taught him how
to browse web pages, send e-mails and now I'm trying to introduce him to
the basic administration of folders, files and disk space. I haven't
been very successful so far and I'm beginning to think he should have
bought an Apple computer instead.

He's also a classical music fan and a bit of an amateur musician and
having downloaded a programme which allows him to play music using his
laptop keyboard, now wants to go a step further and link his Casio MIDI
keyboard to a USB port of his laptop and use it to play music, as it is
much more comfortable than using his laptop's keyboard.

As I am his computer advisor, he asked me if that was possible. I have
looked at the instruction manual of his Casio keyboard, and it has both
MIDI IN, OUT and THROUGH connectors. I have seen that MIDI to USB
converter cables are easy to find, but knowing nothing about MIDI my
questions are: What more is needed for his intended purpose?, Does he
need any special software or controllers?, Do I have to perform any
configuration changes for Windows 7 to recognize his MIDI keyboard?

Thanks to all on his behalf,

MIDI is a world of weird, but I'd advise you/your friend to get one of these:

M-Audio stuff has excellent cross-platform compatibility, in general,
and excellent software support. Any decent music package will
automatically detect the MIDI driver that comes with the device and
talk to your keyboard. If the keyboard is an older one, or a less
popular one, you may have to fiddle around to map the MIDI commands
and such, but it can be done with patience.

I have one of the older 2X2 Midisports and I used it under Windows
before moving exclusively to Mac. It worked just fine with the Mac
driver.

Ignore the MIDI-through jack, by the way. Only useful if
daisy-chaining devices and nobody does that anymore. Full in/out
channels are just too cheap to need daisy-chaining (plus stock serial
MIDI runs insanely slowly, about 38Kbps).

I think it is better wide open than the M 50mm 1.4, which is a very good

pleasant colour rendition. The M is a bit in the cold side, the F 50mm
1.7 is very sharp but has a slightly hotter colour rendition, while the
A 1.2 is more neutral for my eye.

But at the insanely high prices the A 50mm 1.2 is being sold for

the lens and put that money towards other photo equipment you want or
need more.

It doesn't work. On the other hand, on the K10D you can roll back its
firmware to a previous version, then SDM focusing is disengaged and the
camera uses the built-in motor to drive the focusing. I have done it and
it works.
There are some caveats, though. Firstly, it only can be done with the
K10D. I downloaded a 1.1 firmware with a patched header which makes the
camera think it is 1.30 version, then it allows to install it on top of
the 1.30 version in the camera (that was the firmware which enabled SDM
focusing). Afterwards, I updated the firmware to version 1.20 because it
adds some valuable changes.
Be careful, if you have updated to version 1.31, you can't roll it back
using the patched firmware. One of these days I'm going to install
version 1.30 again to see if the solution the Pentax tech told you works
with my 50-135.

management. Now this hasn't bothered me too much as the new Pentax
Camera Utility 4 has a much improved user interface, (even though I find
it's batch capabilities inferior to RawShooter), but hell it's free.
Well, not free exactly. You pay for the license when you buy the camera
it's sort of Free).

Well the latest upgrade which supposedly included some processing
enhancements no longer ran under Win2K. Though it no longer needs an
original CD to install, (Pentax giveth, Pentax taketh away).

The actual error when attempting to run the application was Cannot find
'UxTheme.dll' with a system path that included /winnt/system32.

UXTheme.dll is a WinXp and later OS file that is redraws controls,
(doesn't MS ever get tired of screwing up their OS). Well I couldn't let
that stand. I mean really The damned software installs it should run!

I was able to find a cross compiled version of that DLL originally
written for Wine, (a linex Windows emulator), which seems to allow the
latest version of PCU4 to run on Win2K. I haven't noticed any major
improvement in performance, but some of the dialogs now display better.
I'll either be complaining bitterly and reverting to the previous
version of the PCU4 or not mention it again and just happily use the
improved version. I guess this should stand me in good stead as the
latest version of PCU4 supports the K-5 if I have no further problems.

The upshot of this is if anyone would like fix, I'll be happy to put a
text file with instructions and copies of the necessary files in a
dropbox folder.

discharged, the lens will no longer focus. The charge takes up to two

It very much depends on the version. There's two versions of the Sigma

Note these are being replaced by Sigma's 17-50 f2.8 OS HSM.

The one cited in Larry's message, that is the same I have, is the 2nd
