So did not participate in the last couple of PUG's either.

GPS and flip-screen are both nice-to-have for me, since I will mostly be using
the camera
alongside my trusty K1, which is the onoy 'real' and more or less up to date
cam I have now
after passing my K3 on to my son.

And since I plan to go on a two-week safari next year (october, Botswana)
this will be a perfect backup-cam as well as long-lens rig (with the 150-450)

I hope AF speed and reliability have improved significantly ;-)

On dedicated fotoshoots yes, that's usually how it goes with me too.

However, for travel photography, there are often situations where there is

makes the

Some pictures from the min-PDML meets on my latest USA roadtrip

2019-12-06 Thread Jan van Wijk
Hi all,

During my rather busy and long (4200 miles) roadtrip down, then up the east
coast,
a couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure to meet a few well known list members.

On the way down from Washington to Orlando, I met John Sessoms at his favourite
water hole in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he lives, and we chatted several
hours.
It was a nice interlude in my journey south, John, and very good coffee too!

Later on the way back north, I had the chance to go to NYC (from Long Island)
and visit
Ann Sanfedele in her east village appartment, where Daniel J. Matyola joined us
for
a short walk to one of Annsan's favourite restourants, where we enjoyed a good
lunch.

Annsan and Dan, it was real nice chatting with both of you, admiring the museum
like walls
with photography and other art in 'Chez Ashley' and walking the streets of
Manhattan.

I threw together a small gallery with some pictures related to both mini-PDML
meets at:

https://www.dfsee.com/gallery/lr/usa2019p

Enjoy!

For the really interested, the full roadtrip gallery (450 images) is at:

https://www.dfsee.com/gallery/lr/usa2019a

As a side note, I hope to be at the next GFM weekend next year, and see some
more PDML members!

Mini-PDML meet in Raleigh NC

2019-10-31 Thread Jan van Wijk
Had a very enjoyable meeting with John Sessoms today, in his hometown Raleigh,
North-Carolina.

We met at his favourite watering hole, the 'Deja Brew Coffee House' where we
spent the best part of the afernoon chatting, covering a lot of ground,
some of it even Pentax related :)

Failed to make a selfie of the both of us, but I did grab a few images, like
this one:

https://www.dfsee.com/download/John-Sessoms-03091.jpg

All in all a very pleasant meeting with a fellow Pentaxian!

Looking forward to the upcoming mini-PDML meet at Annes place in NYC in a week
or so!

I am sure I will have some lonely nights in motels during my upcoming roadtrip,

It is quite certain now that I WILL pass by Raleigh on Wednesday the 30th of
October.
I will be staying the night of the 29th in a Motel in Fredericksburg, so
meeting for

Let me know if you can fit that in your schedule ...

I'll be happy to drive into Raleigh proper, no need for you to drive out to the
Interstate.

Note;
I may be passing again heading north on the 11th or 12th of November,
but will be more in a hurry then, and perhaps travel more westwards

That would be nice too, I really like BBQ.

So, whatever is more convenient for you.
I wouldn't mind going through Raleigh proper, perhaps even stay there for the

I could either visit Raleigh on my way south, probably on the 31st of October,
or on the way north to NYC, on the 12th or 13th of November.

No, unfortunately they did not know ANYTHING about it, appearantly it was
the first '100 year' event in Europe (actual date is in November) and they
only received the prototype the day before the event.

But like on DPReview and other sites, most people guess it is to
switch off/on a touch-screen. But it COULD have some function
for a hybrid viewfinder too I guess ...

I don't know the exact date(s) yet, but I will be in the vicinity between the
13th
and probably the 17th of November. I am driving up from Florida, and have to
be at Dulles airport in DC on the 19th.

I won't be staying in NYC proper, too expensive, but probably
near the Newark airport in NJ, and visit NYC/Manhattan for two or three days,
probably using public transportation (a car does not seem smart for NYC :)

I'll let you all know the exact dates as soon as I know them.

I expect it would be towards the 17th rather than the 13th since I also
need to visit some friends on Long Island ...

that is, lets see, a Saturday. But I am somewhat flexible in my schdule ...

Will be visiting the US the first three weks of November, PDML meets appreciated :)

2019-09-29 Thread Jan van Wijk
Hi all,

I will be in the USA from the 30th of October until the 19th of November,
mainly in Florids (tour of the Keys and Everglades) and to attend to
a computer related conference where I will give some presentations.

However, from the 12th of November I will be near NYC (Long Island actually)
and will be visiting Manhattan a few times for things like the Guggenheim and
MOMA,
and probably a vistit to the B store as well, just for kicks :)

Would love to meet some of the local PDML members,
perhaps have a coffee or lunch with Ann in New York ...
(the lunch will be on me, so grab your chances :)

Also, as said, the first week of November I will be traveling in Florida,
so if anyone wants to meet up there, I can probably make that work too.

As a sidenote:
I was at a Pentax-100-year event in the Netherlands yesterday, very inspriring,
with lots of Pentax afficiendos, lots of gear, and good presentatioins
from professional photographers using Pentax (yes they do exist)

And the new APCS prototype was on display (under glass :)
so I saw that too, no new information unfortunately, beyond what is already
shown on DPReview and similar sites, but it certainly
looks promising. VERY much K1 like, just a bit smaller :)

(but with a fixed rear-screen, at least on this mock-up)

than I expected. I did a family outing shoout last week carrying that, and two

Think I have seen a few of them before, but they are great indeed!

This lens (with converter I guess) is going to replace the BIGMA (50-500)
with image-stabilization built-in.

I am counting on the Pentax being sharper, and image stabilization in the body
on-par with what the Sigma lens could do ...

Using 1.4 converter on DFA 150-450. Worth it ?

2019-09-05 Thread Jan van Wijk
Hi all, could use some feedback here ...

After studying the Micro Four Thirds system for several months, intending
to add a Panasonic G9 (same battery as K1 !) or Olympus E M1 II body with
a few long lenses like the Pana-Leica 100-400mm for better (action) focussing
and lower overall weight, I am reconsidering.

The culprit was getting the DFA 15-30mm for the K1, which is so mind-blowing
good that I am now looking into just completing the focal-length range for the
K1
with the latest quality stuff instead of switching to, or adding another system.

So I see the DFA 24-70 and 150-450mm somewhere in my future as well ...

So much for the smal talk, the question is, is the latest Pentax 1.4 converter
worth its price when used with teh DFA 140-450mm ?

I mean instead of simply cropping the 36MP image in post ...

I think I remember Paul and perhaps other posting about this combo,
and may try to look up those posts too, but I wuld like some fresh
input when possible :)

Thanks in advance ...

Well, I have a 67II with four lenses that has been sitting in the
closet for the last 10 years that I might be willing to part with.

The body is fine, with just a small mark/scratch on the back leatherette.
It was bought new in 2002 together with the 100mm macro f/4 (1:1)
for an horrendous amount of money :)

The body has the AE-prisma mounted, and I also have the simple loupe viewfinder.
Body and 100mm come with the original boxes if you wish.

The other three lenses are:
- F/2.8 165mm, nice condition
- F/4 200mm tele, visibly used
- F/4 45mm ultrawide, a bit of a beater but optically OK

I think I spent a sum well north of 3000 Euro's back then for the whole set,
which comes in a sturdy Lowepro backpak nicely fitting all stuff.

I'd be willing to let it go to a fellow Pentaxian for 1500 Euro's,
which is well below current eBay prices as far as I could see.

Shipping could be a problem, this is heavy stuff!

Perhaps a city-trip to Amsterdam to pick it up would be cheaper/safer :)
(I live 20 minutes by train from Amsterdam)

Nice read indeed.

For myself, I am seriously looking into getting a Panasonic G9 with a few of
the Leica zooms,
it is just amazing what that technology can do these days, and the lenses are
relatively small and light.

That said, I will never part with my K1 (and K3) with 30+ Pentax lenses, the

I have got the original 'Pentax Q', a mirrorless with a tiny sensor, which
works quite
well when there is enought light. (I have one prime and 2 zooms with that)

That is the big disadvantage on the simpler mirrorless cameras,
like the K-01 and the 'Q'.

However, on a more upscale model like a Panasonic D9 or the Sony A7
the EVF makes up for most of that.

I still prefer an OVF in most cases, but there certainly are situations
in which the EFV actually performs and works better!

Some strong opinions indeed.

I know for sure I am going to enjoy the optical viewfinder and very good IQ
from my K1 for a long time.

That said, I have been seriously looking at the Panasonic G9 (micro-4/3) and a
few
of the Panasonic/Leica lenses for that, specifiacally the 100-400mm.
(which is an 800mm equivalent on micro-4/3)

For action, birding, but also video and focus-stacking it would be far superior
to the K1,
although the IQ is a bit less due to the smaller sensor (less DR, more noise).

But hey, who said we need to choose one over the other, when we can have both :)

It does not stand out well enough (got too small), but the 'circular' in this

was in the lower right hand, where the mill-operator (milnner ?) is actually
standing IN the large wheel that makes the whole windmill turn arround,

Hmm, just checked, thought there would be one or two, but it turns out the
ones I remembered were made with the BIGMA, not the FA400

But, checking in Lightroom, I see I have 922 images shot with the FA400
so I selected 8 out of those, from the K10, K3 and one test-shot from the K1.

I have exported them in 3000x2000 resolution as JPG.

Some do show some color fringing (green/purple) in specular highlights and
tree-branches
(like the storch-nest, which was NOT corrected in Lightroom., others may have
been)

You can find the JPGS here:

https://www.dfsee.com/download/fa400.zip

It is about 16Mb to download, and they have full EXIF info.

Hello Subash,

I have had the FA* 400 ever since I ownded the PZ1 in the film days.
It is easy to hadle (has a tripod collar) but can also be handheld quite easy.
It is pretty fast in focussing and optical quality is good (as expected for a *
lens)

However, it DOES show purple fringing in high contrast areas, like tree
branches against the sky.
Depending on the subject and lighting, it can be cured reasonable in post (I
use lightroom)
but it will not be perfect ...

I have used it on all digital bodies I owned, including the K3 and K1, but most
of the time I prefer
to use the Sigma 50..500 zoom, when the extra weight is no issue.

As far as I understood the various threads about this (DPReview and
Pentax-forums),
the consensus is that this is the familiar noise-reduction IN SOFTWARE ONLY,
that always has been there is some form or another.

The (additional ?) noise reduction that now seems to be present is done by the
accelerator-unit,
which is a HARDWARE processor that sits in between the sensor and the existing
processing in
the PRIME engine (after the AD-converter I gues, so in the digital domain
already)
It being a hardware solution, and in the direct image-processing path,
it may be hard to supply an easy ON/OFF mechanism.

But I guess no one outside Pentax really knows for sure at the moment ...

Perhaps, but I doubt it.

Perhaps, we will see it in the coming months I hope.

That sounds like a good plan. Even if you only convert one of them,
that WILL have the improvements in AF for when you need it :)

Unfortunately I only have one, so can't take that route.

DPR review of K1 II is now up, not very favourable ...

2018-05-07 Thread Jan van Wijk
Just an FYI:

I was still considering upgrading my K1 to the 'II' level, for better high-ISO
performance
better AF-tracking and the 'handheld' pixel-shift.

I don't like the hassle/risk of sending it in (to Germany, from the
Netherlands) though.

Now, reading the review, it seems that the 'better' high ISO is achieved mainly
by adding noise reduction in the new accelarator chip, at the expense of detail.
(quite visible in small printed text for example).

So I will probably skip the update and save 500 Euros as well :)

I will wait for the next model, with newer sensor technology, and just enjoy
the K1 until then!

That is exactly how I always switch between my primary photo-disk and backups.
Just let it find the TOP-level folder where all your photis reside, just a
single action.

However, I do remmber needing to do the 'drilling down' towards the top-folder
once
because by default, Lightroom does not show that, I vaguely recall there was a
specific
setting for that (show top level folders ?)

Of course, this works best if indeed all yopur photos are under a single folder,
if they are in many seperate folders directly under the root, you probably need
to
locate each one of these in turn ...

>> will DFSee ...

If you still want to try, even when Disk-Utility fails to see it, here is a
short tutorial on using DFSee on macOS:

1)
Download the distrubution archive, a ZIP containing exectables for all
supported platforms, from:

https://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfsee_install.zip

The default location will probably be your personal '~/Download' directory,
but you can download it it to some other location too.

2)
Extract the contents of that ZIP, easiest is just to double-click it in the
Finder

3)
Open a terminal window, and navigate to the directory (or folder :) where DFSee
was unpacked,
then to the macOS specific dirctory. When you downloaded/unpacked in
~/Download' that will be:

~/Download/dfsee_install/mac

4)
Set the file attributes to allow execution, and create a symlink to run it from
anywhere
by running the supplied 'setup' script from that directory:

chmod 755 setup
./setup

5)
Now, when you did let the setup create symlinks too, (default to
'/usr/local/bin' but can be specified)
you can simply run any of the dfsee scripts directly since the setup scripts
created symlinks, examples:

dfs
dfsdisk
dfscheck
dfsedit

You can run these from ANY directory, like /tmp or a specific dfsee 'data'
directory,
so logfiles or other resultfiles will end up there too.

Just 'dfs' will run it interactively, in a text-mode version, but WITH a menu,
dialogs and mouse support.

The 'dfsdisk' one will run an analysis of your disk(s) and create reports
to be sent to support personel (which would probably be me in this case)

Note that DFSee needs administrator right to even see the disks, so the
symlinked script
use the 'sudo' command to achieve that (and will prompt for your admin
password).

If you need/want to run it manually, you must either be logged on as root, or
use sudo, as in:

cd ~/Download/dfsee_install/mac
sudo ./dfsee

(assuming setup has already run, and has set the attributes with 'chmod 755
dfsee')

You can find additional information in various text files that are in the
/dfsee_install/doc directory,
and can also be found on the website at:

https://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/help.php

Regards, JvW

PS:
If you are running a very recent macOS (High Sierra or newer) and your boot
disk
has been converted to APFS format, it will NOT show up in DFSee, since it needs
to be unmounted before any access is permitted. You will only see any additional
disks like USB attached ones.

Hmm, that does not sound good.
It should make some 'seeking' noise perhaps (and the LED, if any may blink for
a while)
but it should not make real 'click' sounds.

Clicks are usually caused by the drive-firmware resetting, causing the

the platters ...

simply FAT32?

Does not show up in the Finder I guess, but not in Disk Utility either?

The Finder will not see it if there is no mountable filesystem found, perhaps
due to damaged partition tables,
it is quite possible that the Disk Utilty still sees it, meaning the USB
connection and drive are at least working.

>>Could the crashing i/o card on the old Mini have damaged these drives? Is

Hard to say without further analysis, if it does not show up ANYWHERE (Disk
Utility, other disk-tools)
then it is likely to be a problem with the disk hardware, or perhaps the
USB-enclosure ...

Good suggestion, but not so easily done. Not sure if the mac-mini has extra
SATA ports ?
(I have only used and older iMac and a 2013 macBook pro sofar, so not familiar
with it)

Indeed.

Partition tables (MBR, and parts of GPT ones too) are close to the start of the
disk,
and that is the most likely area to get damaged when programs go astray ...

Indeed, I have a similar one ...

Yes, good advice.

If the data on the drives is valuable at all (meaning no other backups)
you should make a copy (clone) of the disk, then attempt repair or
file recovery from that copy ...

>To be extra safe, you could try getting a couple of docks/cases, then maybe
>use dd to make a direct copy of your old drive to your new drive, then try to
>repair the partition table on the new drive.

Right, with chances of the drives being damaged, perhaps use 'ddrescue' instead
(to be downloaded, use google)

If you are somewhat comfortable using the commandline, you could also try my
own multiplatform
disk-tool that can do an analysis of the disk, and search for missing
partitions (MGR or GPT style)
using the 'Analyse disks for support' menu item in the 'scripts' menu.

It is text-mode, and runs in the macOS Console, but DOES have a menu system.
I have assisted in dozens of partition-recoveries over the years using this
tool.

You need to install it from a ZIP-archive, then run a 'setup' script to set the
permissions right,
and create some symlinks and then run it with ROOT privileges (for example by
using 'sudo')
which will be done automatically if you use the 'dfs' symlinked script.

You can download the installation ZIP from my website:

https://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/download.php

Make sure to read the '/doc/dfsinst.txt' from that archive for further
installation tips,
look for the Linux/OS-X section.

I'll be available for further assistance if you choose to go this route ...

OK, good to know.

I made several stereoscopic images using the K1, M 50mm F/1.7 and the stereo
adapter
a few weeks ago, and that works reasonably well.

I simply viewed them on a monitor, scaled so the two images are about 7
centimeter apart.
With some eye training you can then look at them without any additional viewer
hardware,
looking at the left image with the left eye and right image with the right one.

You just need to relax your eye muscles as if they are looking to an infinity
target :)
It is the same procedure as used with the '3D' image books that got popular
quite a few years ago .

>As the distance of the picture is different from the exact position of a
>slide,
>I still have to see if the two pictures merge into the correct stereo view.

They do, but you need to scale the images properly,
certainly if you use the viewer this way to make separating
the images a little easier.

However, like in the film-days, when I used to make sterioscopic slides with
this adapter,
the vertical format is a handicap for most subjects.

Back then I also had a real stero camara, with two 50mm lenses each
creating a full-frame 35mm image on slide film. They could be mounted
in a special slide-holder, and viewed with a viewer for that.
For landscap this was a lot more usable than the vertical Pentac ones ...

But it is nice to be able to use the stuff again, of a full-frame!

K1-II spec leaked, seems like minor improvements only

2018-02-14 Thread Jan van Wijk
The leaked specs at pentaxrumors.com look somewhat genuine to me.
And if true it is not a major upgrade:

 - 2 stops higher ISO up to 819200 (same as KP I guess)
 - improved high-ISO noise handling
 - Improved pixel-shift

No reason to upgrade my 3 months old K1 :)

Yes, just create a 'Virtual Copy' of the image (you can make several if you
wish)
and work on the copy. Each copy has its own set of 'adjustments made to it'
but share the same (unchanged) RAW data.

You can also use this to create different aspect ratios or crops for example ...

The function you are looking for is on the context-menu for a thumbnail or on
the
image when opened in the Library or Develop module and is called 'Create
Virtual Copy'
(You get the context menu with a right mouse button click, or Ctrl+Click on

K1, rotate LCD screen?

2017-12-12 Thread Jan van Wijk
Hi all,

Just a quick question.

I was playing with my new K1 yesterday, doing some macro on a copy-stand.
(50mm macro + 100mm extension tube)

With the camera pointing straight down, it was nice to be able to fold the LCD
upwards
to make it easier to see. This was fine for the viewing (and live view),
however,
due to the orientation of the camera, the menus are upside down ...

I guess there is no setting to rotate the LCD-display 180 degrees, is there?

I could not find anything in the menus or manual about it ...

TIA, JvW

I have one of these, for use with the 67II, en my older film-era 35mm stuff.

Have not touched any of them in several years though, partly because at
some point there was no Nikon driver anymore for macOS
(Mac OSx at that time, I think it 64-bit only from then on)

What are you using to run the scanner, the Nikkon Software, or vuescan perhaps?
And is that on Windows or Mac ?

Hi all,

I finally bit the bullet on getting a K1, now that it comes with a 300 Euro

At the moment I am using the K3 and its DNG files with Lightroom 6.6.1
and I THINK that should work for the K1 as well (with somewhat larger files :)

Anyone that can confirm that?

I would hate to switch, and re-learn some other toolchain ...

I don't have strong likes or dislikes here, but the 'least favorites' would be:

New 55-300 PLM works fine on K3

2017-06-09 Thread Jan van Wijk
I am still waiting for news about a proper K3 replacment (The KP does not
really fit me)
to decide to stay with the cropped format or get a K1 instead.

Then I saw that the latest K3 firmware has support for the DA 55-300mm PLM, so
I upgraded my K3 firmware
and bought one as a second walk-about lens for the K3, together with the
18-135mm.

Got it yesterday, and shot over 400 images sofar.

I must say it is remarkably fast in focussing, and I really like the 300mm
reach.
Image quality seems decent, on par with the 18-135.
The speed with f/6.3 at the long end is fine for most of my shooting (travel,
nature).

Also, the rather large overlap between the two zooms make it easier to decide
which one to take on specific outings, either more wide-angle or more tele :)

The build quality is good as well, quite sturdy, even when fully extended.
I also like the small form-factor when collapsed, it is about the same
size as the 18-135mm then.

Regards, JvW

Just noticed you can even set it it to a 'slideshow' modus (after selecting all
files).
It is in the 'view' menu, just like the 'full screen'.

Actually, when preview is the one used (default unless changed by the user),
it is quite easy to view a complete folder of JPG images.

You use 'Finder' (the directory browser) to navigate to the folder,
double-click to open it.

Once in the folder use 'cmd+A' to select all files, the double-click on any
of the selected ones to open all of them in preview.

Preview has a sidebar with thumbnails, and you can use up/down arrow keys
to go through the set. You can also switch to full-screen mode, and the
arrow keys still work then (but the sidebar is gone :)

To move to the next folder, close preview, and return to the 'finder' window.

There is also a plugin that will add it as a slider, you still have to activate
for each image seperately though, using the menu:

'File -> Plugin Extras -> DeHaze Control'

The desciption and download for this plugin is at:

https://cutthruthefog.wordpress.com/lightroom-6-dehaze/

I have been using it for several months now (on Lightroom 6.6.1) and it works
well.

Just received my copy today, it is marvelous!

Apart from the great photography (as usual), I really like the theme for this
year,
must haven taken quite some time and creativity.

A job very well done Mark! (and the others involved).
