Sorry to be rude, but "high grade design" with crappy 20 pix
viewfinder and no RAW... really?
Pentax X-5 was announced approximately two years ago and I don't see
much (if any) improvements except longer zoom.

X-5 is currently 179 eur in Estonia, XG-1 price is announced 299 eur.

What confuses me about this is that I thought Ricoh was going to have
the Ricoh brand on compacts and the Pentax brand on SLRs. I wonder why
they decided to call this one a Pentax.

Hi Dario,

I was a bit "afraid"of some stupid intentional technical limitation.
SR seems to work fine. I haven't done proper comparison, but DA*300 gave
me nice and sharp results without tripod, which I wouldn't expect
without proper SR. Metadata is correct - wide open shot with DA*300/4 is
described as f=420mm, f/5.6.

the resulting focal length.

And what about exif matadata with the K20D?

K-x was the one that made the big leap. When I got my K-x I nearly stopped

The K-r has some big functional advantages over the K-x, and a lot of small

Re: Pentax releases data

2012-09-12 Thread Margus Männik

Well, ok.
What level of improvement could we theoretically expect? I've tried out
most of the new currently available camera bodies. Most of 'em are not
much different from K-5 in terms of focusing. Cameras of the same price
range are often even worse, especially in accuracy of focusing. I would
say, that some C* models in particular are fast, but not very accurate.
When people are talking about "superior AF of the other brands" they
very often do compare apples to the oranges (as you say in English).
Either they are not even touched latest Pentaxes or they compare 'em to
much more expensive models. We all have to admit - C* and N* flagships
do have very good AF modules, they REALLY do. I had an opportunity to
play a bit with Nikon D4 - it's really stellar. Times ago I had D3x set
for a month - and it was not very easy to go back to my K20D afterwards.
But can we really expect the same kind of performance from whatever
Pentax body with ~1000-1500 EUR/USD pricetag? Wouldn't it be the same as
to expect the freshly announced SuperTele lens at no more than 2000 EUR/USD?

Pentax K-30 experience

2012-08-13 Thread Margus Männik
Now I have walked a week with (literally) K-30 in one hand and K-5 in
other. I wrote a review for our local press, but obviously I'm not going
to translate the whole thing, but just want to share some points (and
please forgive me if my English is not good enough).

+ Nice body. I'm not very happy with K-7/K-5 body design (especially w/o
battery grip attached) and K-30 feels better. First it looks a bit
suspicious, but it's really comfortable in hand, even for a long
carrying/shooting.
+ Two-wheel user interface. I've never liked single-wheel cameras like
K-r (and many other). Considering the price, it's really nice feature.
+ Very good viewfinder and possibility to change focusing screen. Once
again, I wouldn't expect those features from less-than-top-line camera,
especially Pentax (who has such a short line of cameras).
+ The picture quality is nearly the same compared to K-5 under ~ISO
6400. I've really compared around 100 "parallel" shots and just
sometimes K-5 images seem to have a tiny bit more dynamic range. At very
high ISOs K-30 noise becomes more prominent and has different nature
(rougher grain). Considering that Pentax K-5 have been named as the very
best APS-C SLR, it seems that now the second best is also Pentax.
+ Video quality is superior to K-5. It's not much surprising as K-30
utilizes the same PRIME M processor that we've already seen in K-01.
Focusing in video mode has made a significant leap forward compared both
to K-5 and K-01.
0 Much praised modifications to focusing system are nearly unnoticeable.
K-30 may be a bit more self-confident with SDM lenses, but can not drive
older ones as fast as K-5.
- Battery life is not impressive and there's no battery grip either. Of
course, 450 shots per charging is not THAT bad, but serious enthusiasts
will definitely need a spare battery.
- Shutter is noisy, about the same as K20D. Continuous drive at 6 fps
sounds quite scary.

- Video soundtrack is mono and camera has no external mic connector.
- Image buffer could be larger. Nowadays the memory chips are
inexpensive, after all.

All together, we have got an really impressive camera. IQ is much better
than K20D and almost the same as K-5. My personal favorite is still K-5
(I need battery grip and don't care about video), but I'm quite sure
many existing pentaxians will prefer K-30.

Processor speed is kind of slow at 1.0Ghz & it shares main memory with
the video processor (256MB dedicated to an ATI Radeon HD 6290).

It might be where I can finally use Lightroom. It's supposed to work
better with less memory than Photoshop does, but it got me to

consider instead.

Other question - there's no CD/DVD, so how the heck would I install
Lightroom? ... or whatever?

How the camera should handle

2012-04-08 Thread Margus Männik

Hi everyone,
I'm writing here a review of K-01 and becoming more and more convinced
that Marc Newson is an *. He managed to ruin a really nice
picture-taking-machine. K-01 is technically extremely capable camera,
but it handles like a brick, especially with 40mm XS lens.

Recently I bought a camera just because of the design, how it looks and
handles. Mr. Newson - watch and learn :)

Re: Comments on the new lenses and Optio WG-2

2012-02-12 Thread Margus Männik
And once again I have to ask - where is the 1.4x SDM teleconverter? They
have planned it for years, what makes it is so hard to design / produce?
560mm sounds nice in theory, but in practice I rather would carry
60-250mm or 300mm (which I do have already) + a little high-quality TC.

cents about all the new products Pentax has announced lately. (item
list taken from
http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/02/07/Pentax_In-development_lenses)

1. smc PENTAX-D FA645 90mm F2.8
I'm glad to see Pentax is showing more support for the 645D. I'll
likely never own one, but it's nice to see it's not just a flash in
the pan.

2. smc PENTAX-DA 560mm F5.6
OMG I WANT THIS LENS. Even though it's a stop slower than my K 500mm
4.5, I would kill for autofocus on a long tele like this. Too bad I'll
probably never be able to afford it. However, if the price isn't too
horrible, I might sell the K 500 and put that money towards this one.
I'd sure miss the rifle sights on the K 500, though...

3. smc PENTAX-DA 50mm F1.8
I've been waiting for a lens like this for a long time. Even though
I'd prefer the 55mm 1.4, there's no way I can afford it. I'll probably
sell my FA 50mm 1.4 (and maybe my A 50mm 1.2, which I never use) to
get this lens.

4. Q lenses TELEPHOTO ZOOM and MOUNT CAP LENS
Although I'll probably not get a Q (too expensive!), I'm intrigued by
this "mount cap lens" that is described thusly: "Eye-catching “body
mount cap” design, along with a toy-camera-like visual effect." Does
anyone else think it sounds like a pinhole lens?

5. A lens for the PENTAX K-01
This unnamed pancake lens reminded me to give my opinion of the K-01:
What an ugly brick of plastic! Get rid of that designer, Pentax, and
hire someone who knows how to make a camera.

6. Adapter Q for K mount lens
This product was inevitable, but I'm glad they're releasing it
relatively soon after the Q's introduction. I'm curious why it needs a
"built-in shutter unit," though.

7. Optio WG-2
I want this camera. Seriously, I'm going to start saving for it as
soon as I get back from Melbourne this May. Pentax's waterproof
cameras have always been great (for P&S cameras, of course), and this
one has all the features I want. I'm particularly glad they added
another light to the macro lights around the lens. Now the lighting
should be a bit more even all the way around the object.

As long as none of these things I hope to buy turn out to be as much
of a lemon as my DA* 16-50, I'll be happy.

Well,

actually you are not that alone.
This software has it's weak points, but I still like it... I have made
some comparisons with PS and Lightroom and Digital Photo Utility stands
very well. In some areas (especially in lens specific corrections) it's
better than Adobe counterparts. So I first convert all my IMPORTANT
photos from RAW to 16-bit TIFF with DPU and only then use PS for further
corrections.

Just a cursory report. The installer no longer needs a properly
labeled CD in a drive to install the update, (well that actually
stopped a few versions ago but it's nice to see that it hasn't come
back). My hacks to get the software to run on the Win2K box still
work, (I always feel a bit of trepidation about updates, never know
what might break). The main stated reasons on Pentax's site for the
update has mostly to do with the 645D,GPS support, and improved noise
reduction. However there seems to be an improvement in the speed of
most imaging operations. Time will tell.

All in all despite the UI being a bit quirky it's a worthy program

With the exception of Godfrey, who sounds like he has achieved gear nirvana and
sounds like he has all the gear he needs for the photos he takes, I think that
most of us often run up against the limitations of what our skill can do with
the gear that we have. And if we're honest with ourselves, skill is usually the
limiting factor, sometimes it's the gear, and sometimes a certain piece of kit
can compensate for our own personal limitations. For example, last night I was
pushing the envelope of what I could do with the K-x photographing backlit
musicians in an otherwise nearly dark room. I was sorely missing the improved
sensor, focus assist light, and focus indicators of the K-r.

I expect that most of us have gear wishlists that would make Bill Gates credit cards
cringe in terror, we also probably have "short lists" of gear that we are
planning on buying in the near future. Generally gear that fills particular needs, and
which would make a noticeable difference in photos that we regularly shoot, or which
would allow us to get photos that we simply can't get with the gear we have.

What items are on your short list, and why?

At the top of my shortlist is the K-5. I often find myself in situations where even 2/3
stop of performance makes a big difference in the photos that I can take. Likewise, there
are times when improved autofocus would also help. It would also be a lot more convenient
for me to have all the features that I need for different scenarios, in the same camera,
rather than being split between two cameras. My K-x could go back to wearing the DA40
and living in my fannypack as my "pocket camera", and the K-5 could be my
primary camera, and stay in my big bag, rather than aways carrying both in the big bag.

I've found that when shooting action, where people are moving around, a zoom
lens can make a huge difference. When I'm photographing aikido, I find that I
need wider lenses when people are defending themselves against multiple
attackers, and the action covers a large portion of the mat, and moves around a
lot. But when only two people are practicing, and they aren't moving around a
lot, my 50mm isn't quite long enough. I suspect that a 28-105/2.8 would
pretty much cover what I need, but since I don't know of one of those the
28-75/2.8 is probably the closest to what I need. Alternatively, if I were
shooting with two cameras, I could get the 50-135 on one body, and the 16-50 on
another. I think that the 50-135 would do also do well with the band
photography I've been doing, considering how often I'm using my 77 or 135 for
closeups.

The runner ups for my short list are:

DA35 macro : I love my DA40 for its size and sharpness, but when I carry it as
a walk around lens, especially on hikes in the woods, I often find myself
wishing it were a bit wider, and focused a bit closer.

Samyang 85/1.4 : I'm still hurting over the A* 85/1.4 that the guys wife sold
at work while I was waiting for him to get home from running his errands. I
keep needing that little bit extra shutter speed. I'd love a modern f/1.4 lens
in the 75-90mm range, but I doubt that I'd be able to afford it before sensors
got so fast that I no longer needed that speed.

Sigma 30/1.4 : My FA31/1.8 may be a better lens, but again, I often find
myself wishing I had that extra 2/3 of a stop of speed, so that I could bump my
shutter speed up from 1/10 to 1/15 second.

Something wider than 16mm.

Hi Leon,

Quite a long list of russian female cat names can be found here:
http://www.charodey.com/names.php?p=r
Keep in mind, that actually not all of 'em are really russian names.

The words you asked:
Bell = kolokol. It's not good, because traditional russian female names
end with "a" (with only one known exception).

Wedding = svadba. Well, if you do like it...
Church = cerkov / hram. Again, not good words as a name, especially
female name.

For Russian Blue I would suggest Zafira (sapphire in spanish, but also
used as a female name in Russia) or Marina (sea blue, also very common
russian female name).

BTW, in russian, mother-in-law is tjoshja (can you spell it?) :)

I do speak and read russian without problems, so feel free to ask if you
do need more help.

Re: K-5 Focusing Speed -- My Opinion

2010-12-06 Thread Margus Männik

Hi,

I'd like to say some words about the difference between K20D and K-5.
Often I do test cameras head-to-head i.e. I do use both at the same
conditions simultaneously. This time I used the other way and abandoned
my "old trusty" K20D for a three days. Completely. Simply took K-5 and
got used to it. Then returned to K20D and (oh boy) there WAS a
difference. Human mind is strange - it doesn't notice slight (and even
not-so-slight) changes to better side, but if something goes a even bit
worse... In short - K20D now feels noisy, slow and loud. Focusing with
SDM-lenses hunts much more and is clearly slower (16-50, 50-135,
60-250). With screw-driven lenses (FA50/1.4, DA35/2.4, DA40 Limited
etc.) the difference is marginal.

And still, K20D feels more comfortable in my hand than K-5.

Paul,

Yes, that could do it in principle, but it doesn't make sense in the

very slight changes shouldn't affect the WB.

I know about Contax, I've even tested it years ago. AX autofocus wasn't
simply slow, it was a disaster. Still it doesn't mean that in-body AF
couldn't be done better - especially if we consider that instead of film
mechanism there's only a sensor to move. After all, weight comparison
between lens (group) and sensor chip is the cornerstone of in-body SR.
How many people said "it can not be done" before Pentax engineers just

Why it still has a focus-ring... hmm, well, it's for a backward

In body AF has been done (Contax AX), it's MUCH faster to move the

I do not know the roots of this saying, but it have been used here for
quite a long time. Most probably it's a translation from russian. When I
studied in university (I have engineering diploma in electronics) we had
also a derivative from it called Tambov Constant (or simply "tambov" in
short). Only years later we found out, that Western world uses identical
Skinner's Constant instead. By definition it is "That quantity which,

 Boris,
there's no actual reason to be afraid of soviet Zorki and Kiev cameras -
they're actually pretty good and inexpensive (at least here in Estonia).
I have a whole collection of fully working russoleicas and commucontaxes
(ca. 40 different models + a long row of lenses) and I'd say - if the
camera haven't been seriously abused, there's usually no problem. Very
often simple CLA works wonders.

My personal favourite for photographing have been one of my Zorki-4K's.
Before I got it, the camera was not used for about 15 years. Despite I
haven't even cleaned or lubricated anything, I've had zero problems.
Other late Zorkis (like Zorki-6) and Kievs are also fine for taking
pictures. Just one warning - Kiev RF lightmeters very commonly do
indicate the price of firewood on Tambov market. Mechanically they're
usually ok. OTOH, I would avoid FEDs. Those were designed to be as cheap
as possible from the beginning and quite often do act accordingly,
especially the ones from 70s to 80s.

Hi Adam,

I bought one at 2003 for my Z-1p and continued to use it with digital
bodies (until the DA* series arrived). It have served fine. Of course it
has more distortion and is not as sharp as top lenses, but I've never
said "this lens is a crap, why did I had to spend my money". The other
FAJ lenses, sorry to say, are quite crappy. First I was worried about
the plastic mount, but after all those years it's still fully intact.

I have also tested it head-to-head against early DA18-55 kit lens (with
K10D) and liked FAJ much more then A. In a short - better geometry and
less vignetting.

Overall, it's surprisingly decent lens. It's much better than you would
presume.

Re: Ultra-wide zooms

Hi there,

I have tested DA15 Limited vs DA14 some time ago (wrote a review). Many
have said that DA14 is better simply because it is a stop faster. Me
personally, I would avoid it at f/2.8 unless absolutely necessary. Test
it as much as you like - it's still soft and vignetting full open. At
f/4 it's much better and outperforms DA15 Limited a bit. At f/5.6 there
was no difference between 'em. Is it worth to have a MUCH larger and
heavier lens, that performs quite sluggish full-open?
One more thing - I never use DA14 without a hood. Never, even indoors.
DA15 Limited also needs protection from side-light, but at least the
hood is built-in.

The conclusion? If I wouldn't already own the DA14, I'd go for DA15 Limited.

All the reviews I've read indicate a slight decrease in performance

complex (8/6) design than the 14 is (12/11) so it will remain less
well corrected. The differences in focal length is very minor and
won't have a serious impact on the design complexity.

New design, optimized for size over performance. Quite a good lens, but
inferior in performance to both the DA 14/2.8 and DA 12-24/4. Smaller than a

For being "digital Auto110" I-10 should have 1) interchangeable lenses,
2) decent optical viewfinder and 3) larger sensor. Right now it is just
a compact camera with cool body and should be treated like one.

were released back in January. But there's only my review on the black

amazon.com ...

"Wow, I wanted to love this camera ... the aesthetics/design got me as
soon as I saw the first images released back in January. I have enough
old Pentaxes (including an Auto 110 Super) to really appreciate the
retro look, styling and old-style logo. The form factor was actually
quite nice, with a good balance, small but really nice right-hand
grip, and a pleasant grippy texture. It was a bit light (plasticky)
for its size.

But the picture-taking experience -- slow, slow, slow, at least by
2010 standards. I think the 2004 PowerShot I have is faster. Flash
photos were terribly slow because of the preflash, which seemed to add
an extra second and a half to the process. And images were soft
overall, but softer as you zoom anywhere near the telephoto end. Noise
and speckling was apparent at nearly all ISO speeds. As far as
positives about image quality, in bright daylight, at 80 ISO (the
sensor's base speed), images weren't bad and the lens did show good
flare resistance.

Videos were technically HD, but at quality poor enough that it didn't
seem to be worth the higher spec. Zoom in video mode is only available
as digital zoom, which degrades image quality immediately.
Sliding battery cover was very fragile and seemed prone to become
misaligned and I was very, very careful with it; I would always worry
about its durability.

I didn't get to check out any of the really fancy features like pet
face recognition. Human face recognition seemed to work reasonably
well, though the photos weren't necessarily better exposed because of
it. In fact, basic flash photos/snapshots seemed washed out, with very
muted colors.

All in all, a very big disappointment. I knew it had fairly average
camera specs (fairly run-of-the mill point-and-shoot specs for a 2010
p&s) with a cool design, but the photo quality was such a step
backward from anything else I'm using today that I had to return it."

No, there is no adapter included. User Manual says no word about it. My
best guess is, that AF160 will attach to the metal barrel (bayonet).

IMO, F 100 Macro wasn't quite a tank compared to FA100 Macro. DFA 100
Macro WR is more compact and feels at least as solid as FA.

Re: Pentax DFA Macro 100mm F2.8 WR

2010-01-31 Thread Margus Männik
Let me explain a bit. Those "minuses" don't mean that the lens would be
unusable or bad.
Aperture ring. If the box says "digital & film" it should work with (at
least latest) film bodies. Yes, I do have Z-1p and therefore shouldn't
actually care about, but as reviewer it is my duty to notice such details.
Lack of limiter is actually a bit more serious. Macro means
close-focusing ability, not that the lens is suitable for shooting
little things only. They're also very good for portraits, landscapes
etc. So the focus hunting in close-up range is pretty annoying.
Especially in combination with such a limited-speed AF. Maybe (and once
again - maybe), if the lens would have SDM, lack of the limiter would be
rather irrelevant.

Unfortunately I can not answer your main question - here in Estonia the
new 100mm Macro WR is freely available (in stores, not order) from our
Pentax dealer. Sometimes I get the new lenses and bodies a bit earlier
(to review 'em before they hit outlets), but this time I got my sample
the very same day as the stores.

Re: Why Pentax?

2010-01-16 Thread Margus Männik
It's simple - Canon consumer cameras (especialy their user interfaces)
do suck even more and we can not afford comparable piles of Nikkor
glass. Olympus is no-no. Sony has all the same "sucking problems" as
Pentax does plus some extra. Also, we already happen to have Pentaxes
and as all those brand-changes are simply a form of financial suicide,
we take pictures with 'em. The most surprising part is, that we don't
take any less GOOD pictures than C, N, O or S owners (at least I don't
get less good shots with my K20D than all those fancy otherbranders and
darksiders that I review every month).

Does Kx have the low light autofocus assist that the K7 has? I found that for
shooting events like wedding receptions in low-light the K7 autofocus is far
better than the K20. With the K20 I had to resort to manual focus -- or when

Options for when I don't want to use the long tele zooms (usually I'm
indoors & need just a little more reach, but I can't walk up to the
subject):
1) get a DA 17-70 to replace 16-45 (pros: longer zoom range, SDM
quietness, same constant f/4 as the 16-45, has a "normal" zoom ring,
has a rebate since I bought the K-7; cons: heavier & larger than the
16-45, it's SDM only; long term SDM reliability, some users complain
of softness btwn 50-70mm)

2) get a DA 70 (pros: small size, complements the DA 21 & DA40,
slightly better in low light at f/2.4; cons: funky lens cap/hood
combination, price?)

If you have the DA16-45, what is your short tele option? I'm not
looking to replace the 16-45; it works and it's been a great bang for
the buck. I've been going back & forth on this for a bit and would
like to see what others think.

Warning: serious risk of camera buying can result from seeing those pics!

I believe the decrease in pixel count is negligible in practical use, while
the improvement in high-ISO performance is so evident one could think of
comparing APS to FF. And remember the K-7 high-ISO performance has not
improved over the K20D, given the extra noise caused by the four-channel

a 15mp chip from Sony with K-x performance, that would be nice.
I don't like small-sized bodies. Nikon D3x was quite perfect for me. OK,
if it can't be K20D body, then let it be at least the digital version of
Z-1p. K-7 is a bit too short from left.
Megapixels... as long as there's enough pixels to fill A4 (8"x12") at
300dpi, I'm happy. It's APS-C body and there's no reason to increase the
sensor density without end. If I really do need more, I still have my
film bodies and possibility to use Imacon scanner. No digital camera can
beat 'em :) If even that's not enough, I have also some 6x6 cameras.

But that's just my point of view.

I don't know what the exact numbers are, but the K7 isn't a lot
lighter
than the K20. Somewhat smaller, but it's packed and well built, so
it's
rather hefty. I prefer a heavier camera. It makes for a steadier

balances substantial lenses better. The DA* 60-250 and the K7 with

I have the Tamron 1.4x, and it passes the SDM signal, but the focus
oscillates about the correct point, and often fails to lock.

I had the same converter some times ago. Not a stellar performer and no
weatherproof at all. Basically the same story with Kenko MC7 (2x TC).

With all the rumblings about the new D-FA 100 WR not being a lens anyone

What is your dream lens that does not yet exist in the current Pentax
lineup?

Rules for this question:
 - Realistic lenses only. No 5000mm 2.8 Macro WR Super-SR SDM APO
Aspherical ED Extra-Crispy Tilt-Shift Low-Calorie Triple-SMC lens with
24 aperture blades, a cherry on top and a pack animal to carry it
around.
 - Describe just one dream lens. No "I can't decide between an 8mm f/68
pinhole and a 76.4mm f/1.2 macro." One lens only.
 - Explain why Pentax really ought to make this lens.

OK, just one lens. Not a dream toy, just a ultimate tool:
SMC Pentax 32mm F1,7 AL IF SDM WR.
I don't care much about f/1.4 aperture. Even f/2 would do fine - it
wouldn't be portrait lens anyway (i.e very large apertures are not much
needed) and cameras are getting better year to year (lower high ISO
noise, better viewfinders, faster focus). So, very large aperture would
make the lens simply more expensive and heavier. 49mm filter size,
please. If possible, it could focus from about 0.2m. Usual Pentax lenses
around 30mm "start" from 30cm and sometimes it's a BIT too far for me.

But of course I would also need GOOD 1.4...1.5 x weatherproof SDM/screw
TC. It's not a lens, it's a converter, so hopefully I can make an
additional wish :)

Super Rotator is not an Arsenal product. Hartblei uses Arenal-made parts

Arsenal is a military factory, they're actually out from civilian photo

Simple answer: lithiums. They're all but necessary in most cameras
using

AA-size batteries.

But these are disposables...a step back IMHO.

Quite honestly, we are all kinda pissing in the wind here. We don't
really know what the power requirments are out of the new camera,
though it is fairly safe to assume that they are fairly high. What we
do know is that previous Pentaxes have had problems with NiMH
batteries, and the cure has been to go to Lithiums.
We also know that in North America, Pentax is packing Lithiums into
the camera.

We also know that the K-x doesn't seem to do well on NiMH batteries.
The logical conclusion is that the camera needs something that it
isn't getting from NiMH batteries, and that Pentax knows this.

Perhaps the step forwards is a better NiMH battery.
No, we aren't. Why should an average customer care about the power
requirements? If the user manual says the camera should work with NiMH
batteries (without additional requirements stated), it should work fine
with ANY non-faulty NiMHs the users happen to have.
Otherwise the users do feel pissed and will not buy more Pentax
products. Also they will drone about it everywhere and chase away more
potential buyers. That causes less profit from sales, less money for
product development and I / you / we have to wait longer for next proper
camera or lens.

Nope, they don't. I'm testing the K-x right now and Eneloops are not
better than Duracell NiMH's. First I tried Duracell 2300mAh's and wasn't
impressed at all. After some 50 or 60 shots camera blacked out. Took
Eneloops from my AF-360FGZ, charged 'em properly yesterday evening, made
some 4 or 5 test shots... and got depleted battery warning today
morning. Shortly after that camera simply switched off. Set of Panasonic
Evoia alkalines helped me out. I put the same Eneloops (and Duracells)
back to flashguns and those work fine.
Now I'm trying my third set of rechargeables - Energizer 2500mAh. I
didn't even charged em but just placed to camera as they came from
drawer. Surprisingly they work quite OK, at least camera turns on every
time. It may show red "empty battery" sign, but works fine and even
charges the pop-up flash.

The K-m and K-x, as we all know, reference the KM and KX from the days

the "K-" to fit with the current naming standard). It could be the
small, manual, barebones and super simple camera that many oldtimers
yearn for. Then, if you put in most of the full-auto features
(including a very basic autofocus system) in the same small body,
you'd have something one might call a K-me or K-zx. Make a larger,
semi-pro model that has interchangeable viewfinders and other
accessories and call it the K-lx, make a fat & ugly model and call it
the K-sfx, and make one that takes film and call it the K-istD (just
for irony's sake).

None of these things will ever happen, of course, but it's fun to
think about.

Those cheap lenses have HUGE manufacturing tolerances. If the product
itself and the production processes are designed properly, there should
be literally no way to "assembly done wrong". Call it "manufactural
foolproofing" if you like. In other words, "kit lenses" and "precision
assembly" are from different worlds.
What's about our "made in vietnam" friends? Either those lenses are not
foolproof in manufacturing (burn the production engineers) or there's
too weak quality control (burn the final quality controllers). Don't
blame the line workers - if there's something that CAN be done wrong,
they DO it wrong. Bring on the automated machinery and it will go even
worse. Been there, seen that.

BR, Margus

Graydon wrote:

I'm sure your right about the cost of straight-up assembly, but it's
pretty clear they've got issues with "assembly done right". A moulded
in flange is likely cheaper than attaching the metal flange correctly.

Could it be that your lens woud show an alignment problem is DPRs lens?
Maybe your FA is very good :)

More food for thoughts (for me)...

Hard to say. The sample of DA*55 I've tested wasn't definitely a bad
one, but maybe also not a stellar. OTOH, my FA50 was really selected as
"best of three available" when I got it for my Z-1p (i.e. many years
ago). OK then - my FA50 is very good - I like it this way ;)

Yes, it's a real good one.
I made not much less impressive hood for my FA50 myself :) You need FA35
bayonet hood (I got mine from *bay for real cheap) and 49-52mm filter
conversion ring. Cut off a bayonet part and glue the ring instead. Be
sure the hood stops at right position. Right shape, cut-off for
polarizer and everything. Fits great also FA28. The only backside -
you'll need 52mm filters instead of 49mm. Much later I discovered that
also DA70L hood fits FA50.

Margus, what are your findings about sharpness, specially wide open?
Supposedly (I insist, I can't compare myself) the FA50 is soft wide
open and DA*55 is quite sharp even wide open.

What is your take on this? Thank you.

Actually I would say they're both equally soft at max. aperture, but if
you stop down to f/2.0, FA is better at corners. If you put 'em
side-to-side at dpreview test, you'll see the same:

http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/widget/Fullscreen.ashx?reviews=51,36&fullscreen=true&av=1,1&fl=55,50&vis=VisualiserSharpnessMTF,VisualiserSharpnessMTF&stack=horizontal&lock=&config=/lensreviews/widget/LensReviewConfiguration.xml%3F4
I made quite many tests as I had an opportunity to get DA* at very good
price + sell immediately my FA. I still have my FA50...

Re: DPReview vs the DA* 55 1.4 SDM

2009-08-01 Thread Margus Männik

Hi,

actually I disagree about this "much improved" part, as FA50/1.4 is not
a lens that can be much improved...
I tested DA*55 when it came out and I made 4 pairs of A3 prints of the
same scenes (one portrait, one town view, one flower closeup and one
sunset). I still watch 'em time to time. They're a bit different, but I
can not say that photos made with one or another lens are clearly
better. Just one exception - background rendering on DA*55 portrait
sample is smoother.
The same time, if I compare non-picture qualities, FA50 wins hands down
- it's much less expensive, smaller and lighter. If there are already
DA*16-50 and DA* 60-250 in my camera bag, I may add FA50 (just in case,
maybe I'll need it), but definitely no DA*55.

Much moaning about AF; loved the lens hood. :-) General agreement that
