So, Rob, what is your overall opinion of the

Thanks for your efforts to test the lens!

The D and DS have created a run on Pentax autofocus

caught flat-footed, with a lot of lenses out of
 production. So everyone
turned to the used market. It, too, is drying up.

We are now paying the price for the lackluster sales

began to be a run on
Pentax primes. It still continues, and I
 suspect that DS owners will
soon try to join in after they decide which
 zoom to buy. Note that
   Pentax autofocus primes have virtually
 disappeared from KEH. Here's
   what I think has happened:

   1. People who bought the D care about image
 quality and can afford
Pentax primes. They began to buy FA primes.

   2. Pentax, meanwhile, had stopped production of
 all, or at least
most, FA lenses (but maybe not FAJ lenses).

   3. Existing stocks began to run out. Look at
 Pentax USA's web site
and see how few primes are now listed.

   4. Pentax got caught by surprise. It was in the
 middle of shifting
lens production to Vietnam and was planning
the new DA and D FA
lines. Pentax did not anticipate that suddenly
 the old FA primes
would be in strong demand. Existing stocks
 have sold out, or nearly
so, and they are no longer being produced.

   5. Nguyen is ill again this winter.

   6. Ebay prices began to shoot up.

OT: Minimum requirements for Photoshop CS?

I thought I would tap into your experience again. I
know these are some of the minimum requirements for
Photoshop CS:

 1) Intel® Pentium® III or 4 processor

 2) Microsoft® Windows® 2000 with Service Pack 3 or
Windows XP

 3) 192MB of RAM (256MB recommended)

 4) 280MB of available hard-disk space

 5) Color monitor with 16-bit color or greater video
card

 6) 1,024x768 or greater monitor resolution

I'm thinking of purchasing a new desktop sometime soon
and would like to hear from user of Photoshop CS.
What type of a system would you build today to work
with with Photoshop CS?

What type of system do you have to backup your work?

Also, is $299 a good deal for Photoshop CS?

TIA!

The biggest public gallery here is the PUG (Pentax

Submission information and monthly themes are
 accessed from links on that
page. Also, check out the large catalog of previous
 month's work. it's a
GREAT way to spend s day at work goofing off :)

There are many places on the web that you can upload
 your photos to. Most
cost money. Make sure you check the fine print for
 their copyright
information. You don't want to give them permission
 to use your photos
 however they want...

And check with your ISP. There's probably a small
 amount (10MB) of storage
space that you get with your monthly service. It
 can be very confusing at
first but once you get the hang of it and can
 remember what the URLs are,
it's pretty easy to use your ISPs space.

 Good luck!

Help w/ portrait of person w/ large head

2004-12-10 Thread Steve Pearson
Does anyone have any suggestions for taking a portrait
for someone with a fairly large head? This man is
tall, around 6' 5. He needs a head shot only for his
work. What kind of angle should I shoot at? Any
other creative ideas???

Maybe someone has some sample photos they have taken
of someone with a similar feature?

TIA,

Steve

Using the istD, I might consider a 200mm lens, which
would give me an effective focal length of 300mm.
What are peoples' opinions of the SMC-A 200mm lens?

My only somewhat long tele lens is the 120 f/2.8,
which I think I will give a try for this gentleman.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Keep 'em coming...

--- Tim Sherburne [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Another advantage of using a long focal length is
 the smaller view angle.
You'll capture less of a noisy background (such as
 tree branches) providing
a simpler final image. The viewer's eye will stay on
 the main subject and
won't get distracted by irrelevant data in the
 background.

 for more natural
features), but using a long lens (more
 importantly) also helps make
for more candid portraits (since the subject is
 generally much

 be using a
  100-300/4, a 300/4, or a 300/4.5 (typically at
 about f/8, if I can
  get enough light).

Well, we touched on medium format the other day.
 However, I read
something interesting on the Photo.Net wedding
 photographer's list this
morning. Marc Williams, the same chap who posted
 nice comments about
the *istD on the Leica forum, posted some
 interesting observations
about MF vs. digital. Marc is a wedding photographer
 and a studio pro.
He's been shooting digital for quite some time, most
 recently with the
Canon 1DS. He was shooting all his weddings on
 digital but grew weary
of the digital darkroom processing. Most recently,
 he's gone back to
shooting weddings with a 'blad and three lenses. He
 says he just turns
his film into the lab and gets a set of proofs. He
 no longer has to
convert every image and print them. He scans and
 prints his finals, but
he claims it's far less work. He also feels the 6x6
 results are
superior to the 1DS digital images. You can find the
 thread on the
Photo.Net wedding photographers forum if you're
 interested in reading
the entire debate. (It drew quite a few responses.)

I took out my 6x7 gear this morning and inspected
 it. I think I'm going
to shoot some MF BW next nice day. I have an urge to
 get back in the
darkroom with some nice, big negatives.

I LOVE the 35 3.5 lens, which makes it close to a
standard 50mm with the istD. Just used it the other
day for my family's Christmas card. Also, just

love the 120 2.8, and SMC-A 24 2.8, SMC-A 50mm 1.4

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I don't think
this will work for what I'm trying to do. I'm trying
to mount a hot shoe style flash, say a Vivitar 285,
and then bounce it into an umbrella. Maybe I did not
see the flash mount on this bracket???

I'm leaning towards a complete stand, bracket, and
umbrella as mentioned in an earlier post by Don.

Thanks eveyone for the ideas!

RE: A Question About Macro Lenses

2004-11-13 Thread Steve Pearson
Hi Shel,

Yesterday I was in the Camera World store here in
Oregon, and they gave me a free cd from Photoflex
about lighting. I'm looking for studio/strobe lights.
The CD-ROM was very helpful. They have numerous
samples and one them showed how they photographed a
minature car. It is very detailed with regards to
digital set up, ie white balance, etc. But it also
goes thru their selection of f-stops, lights, shutter
speed, etc. that shows how the photo changes with each
change.

The minature car sample was interesting as they were
able to make it look like a real car.

Might be of some value to you, and it is free. I
would think you would find it at any reasonbly-sized
photo store.

Have a good one...

 J. C. O'Connell objected to my opinion and
 responded:

 I don't agree (1):

The major differences between macro lenses and
 non-macro
lenses is that macro lenses have special optical
 designs
which optimize near field usage in the range of 1:1
 to 1:10 (approx).
They have different OPTICAL designs. It is not just
 a matter of close
focus capability, that can be achieved by putting
 non-macro lenses on
tubes or bellows but they will not perform nearly as
 well a true macro
lenses because just increasing close focus ability
 without the optical
 redesign yields mediocre results.

I am well aware that the optical designs are very
 different but in real
world actual usage, the major difference is that the
 macro lenses focus
closer. At f/8 or f/11 both lenses are at optimal
 resolution and I don't
think you'll see an appreciable difference in image
 quality when both
lenses can focus on the subject. If the 105mm lens
 required an extension
tube to focus on the subject then the macro lens
 would probably
outperform it. Refer to the original question. The
 images were shot at a
distance where both lenses were able to focus on the
 subject. At that
distance, the macro lens did not yield a
 substantially better image than
the 105. I am not at all surprised that it did not.

Re: Worst Ebay Seller of all time

2004-11-09 Thread Steve Pearson
Hey there,

I have not had that happen to me yet. It seems
incredibly rude and unethical. Too bad you can't
leave him negative feedback.

However, the other one that still really bothers me is
when a seller says that anyone paying by PayPal will
have to pay for the additional fees charged by PayPal.
This is against ebay rules, but I still see it every
once in a while. Even more frustrating when you want
to use a Buy it Now, but you know you can't change
the seller's mind fast enough. If you try, the BIN
will be gone. So, I just don't bother.

--- J. C. O'Connell [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I have a new ebay story that needs telling because
it is absolutely incredible and needs to be
shared. I still cant believe it but
it is TRUE and may be a good warning to future
 ebay buyers out there.

I saw an ebay item which consisted of a mediocre SLR
 camera and 3
decent lenses ( item doesn't really matter, this
 could
have been anything ). This had reasonable ( but
 certainly not great or
bargain or steal ) opening bid and buy it now
prices on it but the listing description was not
 completely clear as to
on the working condition of the items. I kinda
 decided I would buy
it but only if the seller assured me everything was
in good working order and no sooner.

So like anyone else, before I did the Buy it Now I
 emailed
the seller and told them I was interested in buying
 them
but only if the lenses were fully working so I asked
 for a clarification
of the working condition of the items.

A day later he sends me the anwser saying yes the
 lenses are fully
working and he is sure I will be happy with them. I
 was satisfied
with his anwsers so I go to the auction page hoping
 that no one else had
 bid on them or
had bought them and no one had. BUT, I find he had
 raised the price
 TWICE between
the time I asked about them and the time he sent me
 the answer.
Not only does that seem incredible and unethical to
 me, the amazing
 thing is
he actually still expected me to buy them at a new
 jacked up price
about 25% more than when I asked for clarification
 on the
 condtion!

Of course I sent him a F.U. letter in return and
 didn't
really mind not getting them at the original price
 because
it wasn't really a super deal or anything. But I
 still cant believe
someone would think of and actually do something
 like that.
And then to think I would still buy them from him
 after he raised
the price twice before answering my email is
 absolutely inconceivable to
 me.

To me he is the greatest A-hole seller of all time.
 And I have
been doing ebay regularly since 1996. Its not so
 much that he
raised the prices twice between the time I said I
 would buy
if working OK, it's the fact that he honestly
 believed I would
still buy them at the newer much higher prices he
 changed to
after I asked for the condtion clarification!

Comments Please! Has anyone ever heard or seen or
 experienced
anything like that? Ever? Online or offline? That is
 just truly
 mindblowing to me.

Help buying my first studio lighting equipment?

Will this work? Is it best to fire the strobes with
the PC terminal, or via the slave from a 280 bounced

Digital is Awesome!

Hi everyone,

I know you purists will hate to hear this. But, I
just got thru shooting my family's Christmas card.
The beauty of digital, when working with 3 kids, 1

never done this before, but out of 50 some shots, of
course it was impossible to get a shot with everyone
looking at the camera. Our final choice had only the
dog looking away. I figured out how to cut and paste
him from another photo where he was looking at the
camera, and I must say I'm pretty impressed with my
work. Digital is so cool!

Just thought I would share. Hopefully this doesn't

Dude,

Not to vent, but what other camera manufacturer allows
you to use 30+ year old lenses? That is the beauty of

reach the memorial, you must go to the Navy's museum
 and take one of the
small boats that go from there to the memorial
 itself.

The best surfing is on the North Shore, quite a
 distance from Honolulu.
When I was in Hawaii in August, the waves on the
 North Shore were
non-existent. I don't know when the good surf
 season starts, but find
out before you travel all that way. When the waves
 are tiny on the
North Shore, they are better on Waikiki, and there
 are always surfers
outrigger canoes on Waikiki, but it isn't the same.

The Punch Bowl, above Honolulu, is quite
 interesting. The National
Military Cemetary of the Pacific is inside the
 crater, and the view is
wonderful. Hanauma Bay, about 30-45 minutes east of
 Waikiki, is crowded
in high season, but should be better this time of
 year. It is scenic,
and a good spot for novice snorkelers. There is a
 large and lovely
Buddhist temple between Honolulu and the Windward
 coast (Kanehoe, etc)
that is worth visiting, but I forgot the name.

Honolulu is a multicultural city, more so than any
 mainland US city,
even San Francisco. Visit Chinatown and the other
 ethnic enclaves.
Don't miss the Bishop Museum, with great displays on
 Hawaiian history
and culture. Don't spend too much time in Waikiki,
 but do visit the
Royal Hawaiian Hotel (a/k/a the Pink Princess) and
 the Moana Hotel,
which I think is run by Sheraton. Both have a nice
 Hawaiian feel to
them, especially compared with the modern glass and
 steel skyscrapers
 that dominate Waikiki.

The Polynesian Cultural Center, run by the Mormon
 Church, is an
interesting day trip, with good photo opportunities.
  Young people from
all over the Pacific display the culture of their
 various islands, while
many of them attend BYU Hawaii.

The best photo opportunities are on Maui and the Big
 Island, and there
are frequent short and relatively inexpensive
 fly-drive packages for a
day of two. Maui has a photogenic dormant volcano
 and Hawaii still has
flowing lava. If you plan to go to either island, I
 can give you more
 detailed information.

Rotating images on the istD LCD?

2004-09-12 Thread Steve Pearson
Does anyone know if it's possible to rotate stored
images on the CF card in the istD? It's really
frustrating to view a slide show and see the verticle
shots in a horizontal position? I can't figure out
how to rotate the image with the istD. I know I can
in the software. But then you have to re-load back to
the CF card in the camera to view the slide show.

Any suggestions???

Re: My fork in the road-tell me which way to go!

2003-03-28 Thread Steve Pearson
I probably will wait until the *ist D is available.
But 3 things concern me.

1. Nikon's D100 is now ahead of the *ist D in terms
of a learning curve-ie bugs, firmware updates, etc.
Will the *ist D be perfect out of the box? I highly
doubt it, but I guess that's the price you pay to wait
for it.

2. Nikon now has a line of internal focussing
vibration reduction lenses-Pentax???

3. Price. I can now buy a D100 for around $1500, use
my AMEX buyer's guarantee program to price match down
another $250, making my final purchase price $1250.
Will the *ist D be in that price range?

Thanks for the encouragement. It's getting harder
every day that I see the D100 prices drop!

--- Cotty [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Steve,

I know it's tough, but my advice would be to hang
 fire. There are 2 very
 good reasons.

 1. The *ist D is tantalisingly close now, and not
 giving it a few more
months would be criminal - would you forgive
 yourself if you jumped to
Nikon and all the world was jumping on the *ist D.
 Could happen. Of
course I don't mean the entrenched N/C users, but
 this little *ist D
could just be the DSLR that will bring serious
 digital to the mass
market. Just depends on the pricing, and of course
 the reliability.

(Interruption - point of information, Boz sez:

If you can afford it, get the D100 now and be
 prepared to resell it
when the Pentax DSLR is available and if it meets
 your needs. If you
buy the D100 used, you will not lose much money
 reselling it. If Pentax
somehow messes up the DSLR, well, then you have an
 alternative.

 Thank you, Boz)

 2. I disagree. Nikon are obviously going to replace
 the D100, but not
anytime real soon. This means that used D100 prices
 are still higher than
they will be at news of a successor. Once a
 successor is announced, D100
prices will be cut in half. That might be later this
 year. Could be a
dicey time to buy a D100. Waiting for the *ist D
 will alleviate this.
Kill two birds with one stone.

OTOH, this business of delaying the *ist doesn't
 exactly inspire
confidence. I would bet you a pint of Fiddler's
 Elbow that the *ist D
won't be on the shelf until back-to-school time

OTOH, the D100 has seen a severe drop in new price
 since it was launched.
Bit by bit, it has slipped and slided 50 notes here,
 25 notes there,
until it now resides firmly in Canon 10D land. Very
 astute of Nikon, and
 very aggresively priced.

OTOH, the *ist D will take all your lovely lenses -
 must be worth waiting
for. The worst thing that coud happen would be to
 buy Nikon now, the *ist
D comes out, and you start fearing that you should
 have waited, then
panic sell the D100 at a terrible loss.

OTOH, --- as Tevye says in Fiddler On The Roof - -
 THERE IS NO OTHER HAND!

(Hey that's two fiddlers in one email - I nearly
 changed the beer for
something else just to avoid repetition, but heck,
 it's such a good beer,
and it's such a good musical, so who's
 complainin???)

 Tough decision.

I would wait until the *ist D comes out since you
 have all these Pentax
lenses. But you do have a situation. Frankly, I
 think I would have gone
Canon since Canon D30's and D60's are dropping in
 price as their users wait
for the upgrade - the 10D I think that's the model.

Not all their users are waiting for the upgrade,
 Jim. This user certainly
is not. I am more than happy to stick. I note that I
 can trade in a D60
 and 500 GBP for a 10D but frankly I wouldn't be
 tempted if it were a
direct swap. Can't put my finger on why. It's worked
 beautifully since
new, the ergonomics are superb for my hands, the
 controls fall easily to
hand (they have changed on the 10D and I can't see
 the logic in it,
Spock), the polycarbonate body is very sturdy, no
 creaks or groans,
everything works and works well, just simply love
 the camera as a piece
of design - don't like the bulbous rounded looks of
 the 10D

...oh yeah, I've been using it nearly 6 months and
 never had a problem
with dust on the sensor - and boy you wanna see
dust? We shovel it out by
the dump-truck load. I use a broom to get the cat
 hair off my desk.
Actually, a good blow is all you need (as the
 actress said to the bishop)
with a rubber blower down the neck - dust on the
 sensor is highly
overrated IMO. *ist D buyers take note. You won't
 have a problem.

So, far from being caught up in the 'must upgrade'
hype, I am quite a few
years away from ditching a reliable and robust
 camera. Just like I was
back in the 80s when I bought an MX. A couple of
 years later, did I
upgrade? No - I bought another MX. Heck, when the
 shoe fits...

 Chuntering again,

Recent acquisitions include the rare SMC-M 120, SMC-A

3.5, SMC-A 100 2.8. You see my pain?

D100?

The *ist D seems like it won't be available until late
July/August. I have a trip to Hawaii end of April,

I'm really having a hard time convincing myself to

GREAT lenses, that would cost a fortune to replace
with Nikon!

Re: My fork in the road-tell me which way to go!

2003-03-27 Thread Steve Pearson
Bruce,

That is pretty good advice. Actually, the Hawaii trip
is more of a MF trip, i.e. no kids. Disneyworld would
be the AF trip. I think in the end, for my shooting,
the focal length will be just fine (starting out at
36mm) for a digital SLR. I'm just so tired of the
time delay, wasted photos, etc. with film. Digital is
the future! Especially seeing the enlargement
capabilities of a 6MP digital SLR.

 Steve,

When doing daylight fill flash you are normally
 limited to the flash
synch speed for the shutter. Many times this
 requires you to choose a
very small f-stop due to the brightness. HSS allows
 you to choose any
shutter speed you want above the flash synch by
 strobing the flash so
that the image is evenly illuminated. Naturally the
 range of the
flash is severely shortened. Most useful for
 portraits in the
daylight - killing shadows on the face, putting a
 catchlight in the
 eyes.

No, it is not possible. So far, only MZ-S,

support the advanced flash feature with AF360FGZ.
 This includes High

Re: Daylight Fill-Flash w/ 280 on Super Program

2003-03-02 Thread Steve Pearson
Glenn:

First of all, I assume you set the camera shutter
speed to the same as the sync setting (125x), in
manual mode? Or, do I leave shutter set to AUTO? The
manual does say to leave the Super Program set to AUTO
for TTL flash.

Second, when you say to turn the exposure
compensation dial to reduce the flash power. So you
can get fill-flash at one or two stops less than the
daylight, are you referring to the settings on the
flash or on the camera? I think you are talking about
the exposure compensation on the camera. Here's where
I'm ignorant. Which setting do I set it to? I don't
know if I should set it to 1/2x, 1/4x, 2x, or 4x?

Also, I have read another way is to simply slide the
flash ISO setting to twice the film. So, for ISO 100
film, set the flash to 200 and you have a 1 stop fill.
So, would 400 be a 2 stop fill? What I don't know is
do you need to shoot in manual mode, or can I set the
camera on AUTO (or 125x)?

Sorry all for my stupidity. I don't shoot with flash
enough to remember.

The thing to remember, if you use the flash in TTL

So in TTL mode, any compensation you do will be on
 the camera, not on
the flash. You can change the ISO setting, or use
 the exposure
compensation knob, on the camera, to change the
 flash output.

Basic procedure that works for me, with the Metz
 I've got at least:

 1. Turn off flash.
 2. Set shutter speed and aperture to be correct for
 existing light. You
need to be in full manual mode on the camera.
 Remember that you have to
be at 1/125 or slower on the shutter speed.
 3. Turn on flash.
 4. Turn the exposure compensation knob on the camera
 one or two clicks
CLOCKWISE, towards the side with 1/2 and 1/4 listed.
 One click for one
stop under on the flash, two clicks for two stops
 under.
 5. Take picture.
 6. Return flash to normal settings.

Depending on the lighting, you may have to modify
 the flash to still
fire when there's a lot of light. I believe other
 people on the list
 have details on this...
