Re: PESO tired
Yep it was turn 4. It took me many laps to be able to take it with confidence - I was always concerned about not being able to see from the top down the road I was committing to. I think that you might mean turn 4: http://red4est.com/pdapi/searspt.html Or you might be confusing it with the carousel, turn 6, which is a long falling left hander. How'd the MX5 do? Only about five seconds a lap slower than I used to do in my Honda station wagon. I was on street rubber, rather than race tires, but I think that the big problems were with the spacer that fits between the seat and the steering wheel. It was an eventful weekend. Saturday started out with the car feeling loose, and wanting to spin every time I got on the gas coming out of a turn. On my second session, just barely out of the pits, I was accelerating coming out of turn 2, not even up to speed, and the car came around on me. The group leader suggested I lower tire pressures, and that seemed to help it feel a lot more stable. Sunday morning, on my first session, I took the first couple of laps very slowly, on my third lap I was starting to pick up speed, apexed early in four (my race speed turn in point was too early for the speed I was carrying), spun in four, and the car behind me tapped me in the right front fender. I managed to get the car together for most of the second session, and did OK. In the third session, I got a few laps in and the car overheated, it was leaking from (I believe) the heater hose. It was quite an emotional rollercoaster of a weekend. Driving to the track felt like I was going home after a long absence, but every session had humbling challenges. Rowell has been one of my heroes for more than twenty years. More so than Ansel Adams, for example. It was great to have the opportunity to see some of his work printed large and hung on walls. It was also interesting to see so many of his shots hung together. He was very much a colour photographer, often accused of practicing velvia aesthetics. While I usually fail to understand why that is a derogatory term, I did become a bit overwhelmed after perusing the fifth wall of prints. Then I stumbled upon one of his books My Tibet, for which the Dalai Lama had provided the text. It had a bundle of those typical colour photos I know him for, including the iconic picture of the rainbow coming down on the Palace in Lhasa (P19 on this page: http://mountainlight.com/posters.html ). What dominated the book, however, were pictures of people. More subtly rendered, but with a lot of impact. Are some of you folks familiar with this book? What are your thoughts about it? I'd like to hear your opinions about Galen Rowell in general too, of course. Right now I'm wondering whether I'll be able to fit the book into my luggage for the return flight. That seems to be the only thing stopping me from buying it at the moment; along with a retrospective book that's fairly new. :-) Jostein -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Filters?
The 'operating manual' that came with my 600 FA states that the front glass is called the PF (protect front) filter and is there to protect the front element. The PF filter is always recommended for use as it is designed to work as the part of the optical system. It makes no mention about the need to use a filter in the rear filter holder. The lens comes with 7 43mm filters including a normal, skylight, cloudy and UV along with yellow, orange and red. Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller - Original Message - From: Stan Halpin s...@stans-photography.info Subject: Re: Filters? Possibly. My understanding is that lenses with back-end filter drawers have their optics designed with the expectation that another piece of glass will be in the path of the photons streaming toward their final destination. Having no filter there is possibly degrading your images. On the other hand, I don't believe that more typical lenses with front-mounted filters are necessarily designed with the same assumption. So I wouldn't draw the conclusion that filters are universally a good thing. I've always assumed that the design compensation for a rear filter was a trade-off. Such lenses tend to require huge (expensive) filters. So, rather than make you bear the cost of expensive add-ons, they assume a (rear) filter will be in place and compensate for it. And probably design a set of the necessary high-quality filters that fit the drawer and conform to their design. Maybe I am giving the lens designers too much credit . . . stan On Nov 4, 2013, at 6:07 PM, Rob Studdert wrote: My A*300/2.8 has a filter drawer but has never had a filter in there, will my images magically improve if I put one in? :) On 4 November 2013 11:29, kwal...@peoplepc.com wrote: Interestingly, along a similar lines, my 600 (and other Pentax lenses with drop in filters) requires a filter in place for optimum performance although I've never tested to see effects without a filter. Re: White-Faced Heron
Stan, I'm trying to wrap my head around 10 shots a minute for an hour and a half. That to me is a phenomenal shoot rate. In my Inside Passage trip last year in 7 days I shot a little less than 1100 images. Out of that 1100, I've got maybe around 50 that I'm keeping and maybe 10 that I consider exceptional. Granted I didn't shoot many panos and didn't bracket for HDR. The highest number of shots/time I've ever taken was on a wolf/caribou kill in Denali where for about 3 to 4 hours I watched 2 wolves feed off a caribou carcass. In that situation I shot around 450 images but it was an extremely unique/dynamic/once in a lifetime event. Yeah, you definitely are. You don’t need to size up the situation? You don’t need to look through the viewfinder? You don’t need to think about what you want to accomplish? You don’t need to check your settings? You don’t need to think about what settings are called for in the situation given what you want to accomplish? You don’t need to check the results you’re getting and adjust? How stupid do you think I am? -- Eric Weir Decatur, GA USA eew...@bellsouth.net I am not sure where you are coming from in your response to Tom, Eric. He was stating some fundamental truths, presumably to bring the discussion back on center. There are two separate notions confabulated here. One is: what does it take to improve in one's photography. The second is: what does it take to take a good image. The answer to the first question is that you need to practice, study, observe, practice some more. That means taking many shots, thoughtfully, then examining the results and thinking about what went right and what went wrong, then going back and doing it again (hopefully applying some of the lessons learned from the intervening study and reflection). In the process of taking your first 10,000 or first 100,000 images, some will most likely be keepers. Good subject, good composition, appropriate settings on aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, no camera shake, no glare. etc. The more you shoot, the higher your odds are of getting those special images that you will treasure. Taking lots of shots can not only help you get better, it can also help you get lucky. Presumably we all want to rely on more than luck. What it takes to learn a craft, to gain the skills, is not what it takes to execute those skills. Yes, photographers who have moved from beginner to novice to journeyman to some level of expertise will still practice techniques, study and reflect on the results. But they don't need great volumes of images to enable that study because they have learned to look at the subtleties that make the difference between a good picture and a great one. So, yes they are still in a learning mode, hopefully always will be, and most of what it takes to learn as a novice is still true of what it takes to learn even after becoming an expert or master. But going into the studio or into the field is something else. Setting aside the special case of fast-moving wildlife or race cars or athletes, getting good shots isn't about taking a lot of shots. It is about choosing the right subject, the right composition, the right lens, the right level of artificial illumination when called for, appropriate settings for speed, aperture, ISO. When you have all of that right, there is no need for more than one shot. Take it and move 3 feet and recompose and do it again. Which is what I thought Tom was saying in fewer words: quality of process beats quantity in the long run. stan In the interests of clarification, let me extend me comments a bit. I totally understand what Bruce and Rob have said about taking lots of shots during a model session and have no criticism whatsoever of that way of operating. Trying to capture fleeting expressions, looking for minor variations in framing, yes it is a good thing to work the subject and be willing to take lots of shots. In nature photography there are situations where the same applies - e.g., the changing light as the sun rises over a forest lake. For me, the issue of careful deliberate shooting vs. take a lot

Re: Quick Release recommendations...
Been using 'classic' Arca-Swiss Q R system for around 15 year. Most of the other, non Arca-Swiss Q R systems seem to be cheaper imitations. All of my pieces have come from Kirk. All are screw clamp. I've pretty much made up my mind that I'm going to get the Arca-Swiss P0, but I'm not wild about their Slidefix system (or getting locked into it). I would rather go with something a little more universal (like the classic Arca Swiss mounts). I believe that if I get the Arca-Swiss P0 without the Slidefix and just the 1/4 stud, then I can put just about anybody's clamp on it. So I'm looking for a little input from those of you who are using a Quick Release system. What do you like, and why? Anybody have any opinions on the knock-offs available on eBay, etc.? Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller - Original Message - From: Larry Colen l...@red4est.com Subject: Pentax sightings I had the pleasant surprise of having the weekend off. This afternoon I was at an event in SF called Lindy in the Park and noticed a fellow with a K20 around his neck. I wandered over and observed that if had a K-5, he wouldn't need to use his cell phone to video the dancers. A while later, I saw one of the dancers chatting with a woman who had a bright yellow K-01 with her. I had never seen one in person, so I had to go and take a look. Yes, they look just as dorky in person as they do in the photos. I got to hold it though and it feels solid. Amazingly solid. The display was astonishingly visible in broad daylight. She said they bought it because they have a small child, and their point and shoot just couldn't get photos. They'd press the shutter and by the time it tookt he picture, it was long gone. They got the K-01 because it was reasonably priced and because it had much better picture quality than their old camera. She needs something that she can just point and click, and pictures will come out reasonably well, and she is very happy with the camera on that regard. It is weird to think in terms of a better point and shoot, but that is what they needed, and that is what they got. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Thanks Godfrey - I probably need to get my hands on some of the newer EVF's just to see how they currently are. Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller - Original Message - From: Godfrey DiGiorgi godd...@me.com Subject: Re: Which second party camera system do you like? Mini-survey The modern EVF cameras have reduced lag to almost non-existent. My older EVF cameras - Sony F707/F717/F828/R1, Olympus 8080WZ, Panasonic FZ10, Minolta A2 - were fairly pathetic on viewfinder responsiveness and resolution. I used the viewfinder primarily as a targeting device. I remember the FZ10 resolution and refresh being so slow I couldn't even see birds in flight with it ... they disappeared in the refresh cycles. Yet I took quite a few successful photos of birds in flight with it by guessing... EVF responsiveness slows down somewhat as light levels drop ... the sensor has to collect more data, the EVF has to display a few frames of capture data to keep brightness up to a usable standard. But when that's happening, with SLRs it's so dark I can't see anything at all, and certainly can't focus. In either case, if the subject is in motion, I'm back to old reliable: focus by zone, guess the timing. The NEX 6 has a terrific EVF ... better than the NEX 7 to my eye, despite the specifications. The OM-D E-M5 viewfinder is on par with that, the Olympus VF-4 for the E-P5 goes another, noticeable notch better. The new E-M1 viewfinder uses the VF-4 panel but has even better supporting circuitry. Re: Which second party camera system do you like? Mini-survey
Boris, focusing wasn't an issue with the 5700 and moving animals/birds - but I mostly never was able to capture a moving subject and get it in the center of the frame - I had to anticipate where it was going to be when the camera decided to capture the image. Granted that was with an EVF that is now around 9 or 10 years old and they most likely have been improved. Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller - Original Message - From: Boris Liberman bori...@gmail.com Subject: Re: Which second party camera system do you like? Mini-survey Ken, can it be that you're confusing the shutter release lag with EVF operation. With my Ricoh GXR and (manual focus) Leica M-module, everything is quite excellent in this regard. Both the viewfinder is very easy to use and focusing by b/w focus assist is easy. The shutter release is very fast, though it takes time between shots, which I gather is limitation of the rather aged body. In other words, for people with weaker eyes, EVF can be actually preferable as it: 1. Ensures relatively uniform brightness despite different lighting conditions outside, which IMO is a good thing. 2. With proper implementation, focus assist is easier than squinting through OVF even with special screens, and as you might know - I've tried quite a few of them. Hi Bob, You answered part of it yourself. :) This is today, that was years ago. No lines. I was mildly blown away by the IQ of the NEX-7 EVF. Some will whine about noise in low light, but then they should also whine that they can't see a heck of a lot through an optical VF when light levels are low. If anything, at very low light levels an EVF at least gives you a representation of what's being imaged, where with optical, one is almost blind. Take a look through a NEX-6 or 7 EVF. It's a 2.3 million pixel image. That's more than twice the pixel count of the LCD monitor. Re: What is the best, iyo, modern Pentax-brand zoom
Depends on what you mean by modern. I've had 2 'F' zooms in fairly heavy use since 1989 - a 28-80 f3.5-4.5 received very heavy usage thru 2006 as it was my primarily used lens on the job and shot thousands of evidence photos with it (it has a built in macro range that was great for my work. And a 70-210 f4-5.6 which has served me admireably also since 1989. I admit the built of the 70-210 is not the most robust. And while you could spend more money on newer 'better' lenses, I've never seen enough diference to warrant the change. I have a 16-50 f2.8 DA* which I got after not being able to get a 28-70 f2.8 FA*, and other than the faster aperature I wind up using the 28-80 more often than not due to it more convenient size and weight.
