waiting to order until at least a year after introduction, so that most of the

Re: Enablement (and PESO)

2021-03-15 Thread P. J. Alling
It is what Mike Johnston, and I seldom agree with Mike Johnston, would
call a camera at the point of "sufficiency".   Which is one of the
things that are killing the Photo equipment manufacturing industry.
It's got more resolution than most people need, more dynamic range than
most people understand, decent though not spectacular auto focus and a
solid build that feels good in the hand.  The biggest competitor to a
manufactures new camera is that manufactures product from two too three
generations back, and with digital gear the price drop is nothing short
of stupefying over a couple of generations.  Oh, and a really decent
viewfinder.

yes, the K-5 was the first Pentax body that I owned which I felt the sensor

Sure, I hear that a lot from K5 owners who haven't been subjected to the
horrors that the K5 was prone to. It seems people just want to be in
denial and discount the very real problems that the K5 had.
Pretty much all the K5s that Hoya made came with built in problems that
affected a very high percentage of cameras. Ricoh couldn't fix all of
them because there were irreparable design flaws within the camera,
hence the K5II and K5IIs. The IIs had no AA filter.

My K5 didn't have the sensor spots, or the falling off buttons or the
dials that inexplicably stopped working, or the mirror overrun, or the

unreliable as to render the feature useless. Hoya put out several

good. Eventually, they just lost interest in trying to fix the bodge

yes, the K-5 was the first Pentax body that I owned which I felt the sensor
performance was over the threshold of “good enough that I would only *want*
rather than *need* to upgrade.

Enablement (and PESO)

2021-03-15 Thread David Mann
It's been a long time since I bought anything photographic but I recently found
a used K5ii at a reasonable price, and it arrived today. This is a big upgrade
from my K10D.

I went outside and took a couple of photos just after my daughter went to bed
but the light was getting a bit low. No problem, I can crank up the ISO :)

This was taken with the FA*200mm f/2.8 at 6400ISO, 1/125 at f/5.0 handheld,
very much reliant on shake reduction.

PESO -- Circular Waterfall 2021 & an enablement.

2021-01-28 Thread P. J. Alling
I guess this is kind of and enablement post as well as a PESO. Ever
since the destruction of my funky, 60's vintage Sigma* 12mm semi
circular fish eye, which was pretty much a full frame fisheye on APS-C
digital, I've been on the lookout for a good deal on a fisheye lens to
use on my K-3 and K-5II.  A couple of weeks ago I was able to get a Like
New in Box copy of the Pentax DA 10-17mm Fish Eye zoom and decided to
test it out at Chatfield Hollow State Park, on their Circular Water
Feature.  It was bitterly cold but the lens and camera didn't disappoint
me, even if the rendering software did.

I've discovered something really annoying about DXO Optics Pro 9.  When
applying corrections to the afore mentioned 10-17mm, it seriously
defishes it by default.  I don't know how to tell it to not do this
except by removing the lens correction module.  I'm going to contact DxO
and ask them if they understand the point of a fish eye lens, because
they apparently don't.

I'm too tired right now to try how to figure out how to get the full
fish eye effect, so you'll just have to put up with the defished image
for now.

http://webster26.epizy.com/peso/PESO--CircularWaterfall2021.html

Equipment: Pentax K-3 w/PENTAX DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 ED (IF) Fish-Eye Zoom.

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

* It wasn't labeled Sigma but that's who made those lenses, Waterhouse
stops and all.

Re: Enablement!

2020-12-03 Thread P. J. Alling
I did a little research before buying and Sigma seems to have made a
number of similar lenses.  It looks like at least two slightly different
variable aperture versions from f4.0~5.6, though the only real
information available is on the latest one with the HSM focus motor, and
the f3.5 constant aperture version that I picked up.

It seems to be the best optically based on the reviews I've read, and
based on the pluses and minuses, probably better than the other 3rd
party variable aperture APS-c ultra wide zooms in the range from 10mm to
2Xmm, maybe even better than the low end Nikon and Canon offerings.

So far I haven't shot anything except stupid tests.

I went out for a Drive to scenic Stonington CT., but didn't see anything
I wanted to get out of the car for, I can't say it's real cold here, but
it isn't exactly warm either...

I'll post a mini review after I have a chance to play with it a bit.

However, my first impression is pretty favorable.  This lens is one
fat stubby little sucker.  The finish is typical Sigma, feels solid
in the hand, rubberized everywhere,  focus and zoom rings are well
damped, there are no hard stops on the focus ring.

Just off the bat, it would be nice if there was a mark on the zoom
ring where the lens is at it's minimum physical length since that's
somewhere between the 17mm and 14mm focal length marks.

I've fired a couple of shots using the K-3 just to see if everything

I have the slightly slower version for a number of years and I'm still
quite fond of it.

Coincidentally, I've just posted a photo taken with it on fotocommunity,
earlier tonight.

So why didn't I get the Pentax DA* 11-18 f2.8 or Pentax DA 12-24 f4.0?

I was before the same dilemma at the time, well for me it was the Pentax
12-24 mm. A search for my usual kind of night shots taken with the
Pentax lens on various sites revealed some strong tendency to flare
around spotlights etc. so the Sigma lens won out and I've never looked back.

the enablement is not photo-related. it is a 2013 royal enfield
thunderbird 500cc, bought second-hand. it is not all that powerful but
it's got plenty of torque available at a relatively lower rpm and
that's what is needed for a ride in the himalayas. that is where i
intend to go next summer if, and that is a big if, this covid business
gets over by then...

hope you enjoy the photos. stay safe...

Subash, nice series of butterflies and dragonflies!
Great to see all those species not flying around in my area.
I usually shoot these animals at 200 mm to avoid their flying away,
though some don't seem to mind getting close.

Interesting gallery, Subash, paticularly because they all look familiar
to me. That lens does well but it seems you have the knack of getting
very close too.

Then, the Royal Enfield - a British make which became wholly Indian. The
local "Voetspore" (footprints) team recently did a 3 month tour of India
& used a variety of Royal Enfield bikes on various stages - a sort of
promotion too. Voetspore has covered most of Africa but also Madagascar
& India over about 10 years.

We are down to Covid stage 2 now so there is more freedom. It is great
to venture into the Kruger Park again after being cooped up for so long.
Hopefully we will avoid a second spike.

It doesn't always have to be new cameras or lenses. Just got myself a
new monitor, an EIZO CS2420, and boy am I happy with it.

My old one, also an EIZO, had almost 16,000 hours on its counter and it
was high time to get a replacement.

enablement and a PESO

2018-12-20 Thread Subash Jeyan
i've just bought a new-old tokina 400/5.6 at-x sd af in exc+++
condition from ebay japan. i have of course read reviews on the net
(Mark Cassino's note on the lens with the k3 was particularly helpful
and encouraging). it has a reputation for sharpness and also CA in high
contrast situations, which most reviewers say can be handled in post. i
hope i got a sharp copy.

and while i was waiting for it i was going through my archives and
here is a birding shot, not very good, from feb 2007, taken with the
*ist DS, which i had bought towards the end of 2006, and the kit lens:

Re: enablement

2018-10-03 Thread P. J. Alling
I wouldn't say I've had bad luck with the lens, anyone who's seen my
equipment knows I don't baby it, (though in the case of the 70-210mm my
current version looks very nice, I've been a lot more careful with it),
the biggest problem is a lot of parts are now made of unobtainum, and
while the outside of the lens is very robust metal or plastic covered
metal in many cases, (though there are a lot of purely plastic parts),
simple vibration over time, will cause some of the interior screws to
work loose and get into places where they can wreak further havoc beyond
the original issue of the screw coming loose.

The information brush is especially fragile, and is easily damaged by at
least two different basic failures, mostly because the first inkling
that there's something wrong with the lens is the zoom ring going beyond
it's limits, which mangles the brush.

Once that's happened you'll have to fabricate your own brush as no
repairman I know of will do it for you, they don't have the tools and
won't improvise beyond a certain point, for fear of being blamed for
further problems later, and well the lens just not having that high a
resale value to make it worth trying to replicate such a delicate part.

In case you're curious, part of my information comes from partially
disassembling one of my lenses on my own*, part comes from the
information I got through email conversation with the tech who fixed my
second lens, and part from this page

by a former member of this group, unfortunately now deceased, stored in
the wayback machine.

*This not to blow my own horn by the way, I got to a point where I found
the mangled brush and realized that I'd get no further without jigs and
tools I just didn't have and were beyond my poor skills to synthesize.
A shame really as the first lens was the best optically of the three,
second being the worst, but not my much and the current one being
somewhere between the other two, (ah, sample variation strikes again).

There are a number of points of failure that become more likely as
the lens ages.   \

The problem is that the replacement parts are all from donor lenses
which have the same wear.

Don't get me wrong I love the lens, but of the three I own, one is in
pieces for parts to repair the second which is now jammed, which I
didn't try to get repaired because I was able to buy the third, for
less than the cost of the repair and shipping.

Yes, i saw that shot in the PPG too... i guess i'll be shooting quite a
lot when i get it because it is a "new" lens but i'll decide nearer to
the trek whether i should take it or the 55-300. expecting to do some
birding on the trek so i suspect it'll be the 55-300.

Re: enablement

2018-10-02 Thread P. J. Alling
I've owned three of them, the biggest problem is they are getting old,
first sold with the SF series bodies, (1984ish), first "successful"
Pentax auto focus system.

There are a number of points of failure that become more likely as the
lens ages.   \

The problem is that the replacement parts are all from donor lenses
which have the same wear.

Don't get me wrong I love the lens, but of the three I own, one is in
pieces for parts to repair the second which is now jammed, which I
didn't try to get repaired because I was able to buy the third, for less
than the cost of the repair and shipping.

Re: enablement

2018-10-02 Thread Ken Waller
I've had the lens for over 29 years and it has never let me down. Probably
my most used lens or right up there.
I enjoy the relative small size and light weight. Biggest no like is the
external focusing which conflicts with the use of a polarizer, but that's
easily overcome by rotating the polarizer after focusing. Actually I counted
48 of the total 84 images were mine.

Re: enablement

Subash,

I also have that lens. I've purchased it some 15 years ago, while looking
for a better tele-zoom, to replace my Tamron 70-300, while still being on
a limited budget. I bought it from eBay for a bit higher than I should
have, but it was a moment when they seemed to have been disappearing.

It's a fine lens, and I've done a few good shots with it.
(As a matter of fact, I believe the "cover" shot on my photo website was
done with that lens: http://42graphy.org/ Heh! it shows up on PPG - from
that link that you've sent)
However, for some reason, I didn't fell in love with that lens, as much as
I liked 60-250/2.8, which I purchased several years later, when I had a
larger budget.

I still have that lens sitting on the shelf, but it's been ages since
I've used it.
Soon after purchasing that F 70-210, I bought the first version of
Tamron's super-zoom (18-250) (shortly as it came on the market around
2007) which I had used as a travel zoom for several years.
The rendering of F 70-210 was good, but the focal length was a bit short
for my needs on the tele side.
And that lens was not faster than the Tamron zoom. I think those were
the factors I haven't used F 70-210 as much.

Yet, I was reluctant to get rid of it.

I hope you will enjoy your new lens! Post back your results and
impressions, once you get to use that lens.

Re: Enablement (thanks to the Theta SC price drop)

2017-06-27 Thread Darren Addy
I somehow missed the earlier announcement of an upcoming Theta 4K,
which will be introduced sometime this year. If I like what I can do
with the SC, it sounds like the 4K is the one that will produce good
video and would be the one I would potentially upgrade to instead of
the S model.

https://theta360.com/en/info/news/2017-04-21/

Also, reading reviews, it seems that people like "3rd Party" apps for
use with the Theta, than the Ricoh one. Need to do more research on
that. The App Store on my iPad Mini 4 shows a number of possibilities
when searching for "camera control for Ricoh Theta". Several apps
claim to do HDR for the Theta also.

Enablement (thanks to the Theta SC price drop)

Hadn't really seriously looked at the Theta until this: Price drop

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ricoh-announces-199-price-for-theta-sc-360-camera-300479364.html

Decided for this price that I should dip my toe in the waters of 360
degree video (particularly since I can hang it from a drone). In my
future may be a full blown S (with 25 minutes of video capability vs
the 5 minutes of the SC). 360 degree stills might be interesting for
Real Estate work also. It will also be another camera to have running
JUST before totality hits on August 21st.
:)

Original announcement was only last October:

Pentax page for the SC: https://theta360.com/uk/about/theta/sc.html

I was about to order it from Amazon when my WikiBuy extension notified
me I could save $19 by purchasing from B To my surprise, not only
did I save the state tax, but also got to select a free Theta soft
case (I chose the black one with a [just plain silly] $39 suggested

OT: Alternative enablement

2017-03-01 Thread Darren Addy
Made a couple of boss-approved purchases yesterday that I will be
using for work (non-Pentax, thus the OT)

The first is the DJI Mavic Pro, a compact drone with 4K video
capability. For anyone interested, or considering such a thing, this
This guy may seem annoying at first, but he’s pretty funny and yet has
a lot of really good info:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPG1Xa5Uqwo

The last couple of minutes have actual footage captured on the Mavic.
You can click the gear in the YouTube player and up the YouTube
resolution to 1080p HD and make the video Full Screen to see how good
it looks. In my opinion, this is the most kick ass drone available to
the prosumer today. I got the "Fly More" package and added the $99
protection package that will replace the drone up to two times in the
first year.

For a much more attractive reviewer (from the heterosexual male
perspective) see this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPG1Xa5Uqwo
She shows lots of features that the other guy did not cover.

A lot of the shots that I use this drone for will be INDOOR shots, so
its capabilities to fly indoors (and even via WiFi) may be very useful
to me. In addition, this drone has the ability to stay up a lot longer
(27 minutes!?!) and fly in less than calm conditions (since we don't
get a lot of calm wind days in Nebraska, this is important to being
able to get the shots needed for exterior aerials shots.

The 2nd purchase was a Sony RX100 V, which is being purchased for
basically ONE capability only: It's HFR (high frame rate) which allows
for super slow motion. My employer owns three injection molding plants
and those molds sometimes have issues with ejecting parts properly,
and we have taken to using video (converted to QuickTime, so we can
"step" through the frames). I'm hopeful that the RX100 V will allow us
to get clearer images than those from our Canon Vixia HF G20. Using
the Sony's "Shoot Time Priority" the most you can shoot is 7 seconds
at 480 fps, but I believe that will be more than sufficient to capture
the part ejection event, if we time our shutter button press
appropriately. To help with that I also ordered the Sony RM-VPR1
Remote Control multi-terminal cable.
These videos shows the sort of stuff that can be done with the various
frame rates:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh01mmZTtnI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRsyIs9JfZM
(Note: previous model IV. The V has extended capabilities in this
regard, over the IV.)
If you need slow-mo video, this camera seems to be the most bang-for-the-buck.

Finally, I'm upgrading my tripod and head for video. I'm finally
getting a proper fluid head (again, being a bang-for-the-buck guy I
went with the well reviewed E-Image GH03 Fluid Head:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=invoice=details==1100020=REG
For the tripod, I went with the Manfrotto MT190CXPro4
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=invoice=details==1010693=REG

If you are in the market for a tripod, I recommend wathing the MT
Series videos on that page. I love how it converts to horizontal
column mode and can get down to just 3.2" when needed.

The K-3 took a pretty big hit in battery longevity over the K-5 family with

I'm not buying the hype about size, plus there's a lot of people who think

another on Monday, as I can't swap them about.

I've not found swapping cameras about a problem, but I do use different
cameras regularly .My *ist D got used yesterday (I still like that camera,
it feels right in the hand).

Re: Enablement

2017-02-25 Thread P. J. Alling
Well if what you need is better high ISO capability, they I can't argue
with that. I'm just pointing out that it's not particularly compact
compared to it's two immediate predecessors, but all the reviewers and
Ricoh itself seem to be making a big deal over it.

The K-3 took a pretty big hit in battery longevity over the K-5 family
with the same battery. There seems to be a smaller hit taken with the
KP with a smaller battery, merely for the "appearance" of a smaller camera.

I'm not buying the hype about size, plus there's a lot of people who
think that keeping the same metaphor in camera controls is boring, but
there's a reason that Canon hasn't made a major change in it's camera
body design in unpteen zillion years.

If you pick up a Canon camera, and you've used an EOS built in say the
last 20 years, you know pretty much know where everything is and how it
works.

I've moved from a *ist-D in conjunction with a Ds, to a K20D, then to a
K-5II each time there's always been a serious period of adjustment. I
sometimes still find myself trying to press the green button on the
K-5II and end up pressing the exposure compensation button, and the
K-5II has been my primary camera for about three years now. I still
occasionally shoot with the K20D, and I have to get used to it all over
again

Hyping how much smaller it is than a K-3, then comparing it to a mirrorless

It's a lower spec K-3 crippled by it's smaller battery, with a K-1-ish UI a
slightly improved AF module, and all new battery grip, the one for the K-3.
Maybe it's high ISO performance is a bit better, or maybe not. But I'm not

Having now held it, I can make a reply. My cameras live in the same bag

There seems to be a rush to make things smaller. The size reduction wasn't
the selling point to me, only the higher ISO capability. By making it
smaller the big trade off to me is the new battery and charger, which I
consider a negative. I like interchangeability.

Maybe there is a market for smaller cameras that I'm missing the point of. I
would still have happily bought the KP if it had been the size of the K3, or
indeed, a K1.

Anyway, that's as much as I can say about it until I've used it for a while

There is a difference between wanting a new camera and needing one.

If I bought a new camera only when I needed one, I'd probably still be
shooting with the K10D. If we all did that, Pentax - and most every
other manufacturer other than Canon & Nikon - would be out of business
by now.

We had 2 Gretag 3140 printers. We talked to them via a teletype, the

machine was 8K of memory, the newer machine was 16K of memory, but I
could be wrong, they might both have been 16k.
The computer had a row of switches across the front that had to be set

They ran about 8000 6"x4" prints per hour, approximately 15 seconds for
a 36 exposure roll of film.

the sample photos I saw showed it giving the K-1 a run for its money

APS). For just about everything else, except maybe long telephoto
work, I expect the K-1 is still a much nicer camera though.

I gave some thought to the K-3ii and K-P since either would also have
pixel shift. APS-C has some advantages for macro work in that the image
does not have to be magnified as much to fill the frame. But ultimately
the K-1 seemed to be the way to go. The only drawback to the K-1 that I
see is that it might trigger an LBA relapse.

I really liked my Vivitar Series 2 90/2.5 macro. It was a heavy metal lens, the
first version of this iconic lens. Wonderful bokeh and very sharp. Still bummed
that it's gone.

Mark, good choice. I got mine with the 28-105 a week ago and am still

I was a bit worried about the size and weight of the K-1 when walking

Now I'm trying my old prime lenses, but the 28-205 is also fine.

Awesome Mark. I only beat you by a few days. I love it so far. The
flexibility and configurability is overwhelming. I've never had
aperture-bracketing before (unless I never read my previous manuals
thoroughly!), which sounds interesting.

The AF and image quality so far exceeds my expectations. I can't wait
to take it on a good walk or a trip. You'll be happy with it.

It's a lower spec K-3 crippled by it's smaller battery, with a K-1-ish
UI a slightly improved AF module, and all new battery grip, the one
for the K-3. Maybe it's high ISO performance is a bit better, or
maybe not. But I'm not excited about it. There are too many steps
backward for the two steps forward.

Re: Enablement

2017-02-23 Thread P. J. Alling
Alright in the first two paragraphs I already have issues with this
review. First there are the incorrect terms, the reviewer confused
mechanical with manual (as in "manual shutter"), then there's the size
issue.

The reviewer talks about it's compact size. Well go to Camera size and
compare it to the K-5II and the
K-3 there is no significant
difference in size! It will take up exactly the same room in your bag,
and if you use the deep grip, in your hand.

Hyping how much smaller it is than a K-3, then comparing it to a
mirrorless camera is foolish, unless it's a Panasonic DMC-GH3 and even
that is about 30% lighter!

Re: K-1 Enablement

2017-02-23 Thread Paul Stenquist
I find that in comparison to the K-3, which is an excellent camera, the K-1 has
better high ISO performance, better autofocus, particularly in low light, and
all those extra pixels to play with when I want to crop a horizontal as a
vertical. My only complaint is in regard to the overly tight clustering of the
autofocus points.

Congratulations. The K-1 is a nice piece of kit, and I look forward to
seeing what it can do in your hands. Although, I can't help but wonder
if you'd be able to do more with your macros using the new K-p, the
sample photos I saw showed it giving the K-1 a run for its money in high
ISO, and it does have a smaller pixel pitch (24 vs 18 MP in APS). For
just about everything else, except maybe long telephoto work, I expect
the K-1 is still a much nicer camera though.

I've been doing some more stacked macros in the past couple weeks and
the tought that I could be doing these with a much more capable camera
