Many boot problems, but it would work, eventually. The symptoms you describe are compatible with an exhausted battery. Every motherboard has a small lithium battery to keep the PC clock running and also the BIOS settings which are kept in a CMOS memory. That battery (usually a CR2032) has the size and shape of a coin and it is cheap and easy to change. Around here, they are easily found in hardware shops or even supermarkets. Re: Focusing the sigma 20/1.8
You need to set both the camera and the lens to MF, as if you don't you will end damaging the in-camera AF motor. If you only use the lens clutch, it isn't like on Pentax FA* lenses, on which you only need to push backwards the focusing ring to disengage AF. Carlos Larry Colen escribió: Does anyone else have the 20/1.8? Optically it seems like a sweet piece of glass. Unfortunately while I needed it last weekend, it didn't show up until Monday and I haven't had a lot of time to play with it. The first thing that I noticed was that in manual focus, focusing it felt like it was turning a motor. It also turns out that if the lens is in manual focus, and the camera is in auto focus, autofocus still works, it's just that the focus ring won't turn when the camera focuses. Looking on the mount, when I manually focus, the drive gear for the autofocus will turn. The big problem is that this makes the lens unpleasant to manually focus, though it works fine, it feels bad. Is this the way it's supposed to work? Re: Testing the sigma 20/1.8 a few galleries of test snapshots
Larry Colen escribió: Because the manual focus on it feels horrible. It's lumpy getting stiff with every rotation of the auto focus drive screw, then loose on the other half. This also sort of makes it tough to focus accurately if the focus point is where it doesn't want to turn. If the lens were bad optically, I'd just return it. It's too much to ask that all lenses feel like a supertak 50, but this one is beyond reasonable. I have the Sigma EX 28 mm. 1.8 macro. I know it isn't the same lens, but it is closely related, and the manual focus feeling doesn't have anything to do with your experiences with the EX 24 mm. If you disengage autofocus BOTH on the camera and lens, manual focusing with my lens isn't stiff at all, it is very fluid and nearly as good as with traditional manual focus lenses. So I'd say that your 24 lens is defective and you should exchange it. Like I wrote in a previous message some days ago, you must be sure you disengage AF by using both the camera AF/MF switch and also by pushing the focusing ring on the lens towards the camera body, as, unfortunately, these Sigma lenses can't deactivate the AF motor in the camera body only by using the lens clutch, like genuine Pentax FA* lenses do (FA* 24 mm. 2.0, FA* 300 mm. 4.5, FA* 80-200 mm. 2.8 and some others). Re: Wide angle for K-X?
Besides the excellent 16-45 that some people suggested, there is the FA 20-35. Small, AF and high IQ too, though you would have to look for a second hand one. The Voigtländer 58mm 1.4 seems an excellent choice for an 85mm equivalent, but I think it will be hard to focus it accurately using the comparatively small K-x viewfinder, as you come from an MX which has an enormous viewfinder compared to APS-C DSLRs. Every time I compare my two MX to the *ist DS and K10D, I am astonished at the difference. But in that case you can buy a Pentax O-ME53 magnifying eyecup. Carlos Sandy Harris escribió: What I have in mind is the classic 35/85 two lens kit. 35 full-frame equivalent would be wide enough for most of my purposes. Good cheap 24/2 or 2.8 would be first choice if there was one. 21 Limited definitely appeals, but nothing wider unless it is a zoom. I thought of a 10-20 or 12-24 zoom, but I don't think I'd need the wider end much and those lenses tend to be fairly heavy expensive. On the longer side, 75 mm equivalent is the minimum, and I'd prefer a bit longer. Voigtlander 58/1.4 is my first thought. I can afford 21 Limited and 50/1.4, giving me two autofocus Pentax lenses. Those look like a good match and comments on them are all positive. 50 is not quite as long as I'd like, but you can't have everything. Voigtlander 58/1.4 would be preferable on the long end, but it is more money, not autofocus and perhaps harder to match. Might not work well with 21, too big a gap between. I thought perhaps the 58 and Sigma 24/1.8 to give me two fast lenses, but the Sigma i's fairly heavy and no-one here is praising it. I'm no longer considering that. The advice to use the 16-45 was a surprise. That is a pretty flexible lens. Going down to 24 mm equivalent may not be essential, but it is something I'd use. The obvious 2nd lens to go with it would be 70/2.4 Limited. That would be a bit beyond what I want to spend, but a very flexible kit. Hmmm Se certifico que el correo entrante no contiene virus. I had both the FA 35mm 2.0 and the Limited macro. To summarize my experience with those lenses, I'd say that they are both excellent, but if I had to choose one of them, I'd stay with the FA35/2 because I found it better suited for general photography and also because I prefer its rendering capabilities. It also focuses faster and being faster it is a better lens in low light environments. The Lim. is better built and has quick shift, but I think the FA35 is better for non-macro photographers. The DA35 is said to be a kind of low cost FA35 with no QS and plastic bayonet, having the same optical design of the FA but half a stop slower. I am still undecided, I like the flexibility of the X20 concept (a small but solid camera with a good viewfinder and a fast wide to moderate tele zoom), but the IQ of the full size samples I have seen in the Internet hasn't convinced me that it is the right choice. It seems that its small sensor is nothing to write home about. On the other hand, the IQ of the X100 looks excellent, but I don't know if the fixed 35mm-equivalent lens would be enough for my needs, Carlos -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: OT - Camera Store X100s and X20 Hands On Field Test
Thanks for your comments, Godfrey. In fact, I have been looking at the possibility of buying a Ricoh GXR + A12 Leica mount unit, as now they can be had for a lower and more attractive price and it is possible to use my Pentax lenses with and adapter. But the bulk of the camera plus the adapter is almost the same of a DSLR, with a number of disadvantages at least for my use. I am still thinking about that option, but I think I would be better served by a X100 and in any case I want a camera with a viefinder. The RAW files I have downloaded look very good. It is a bit bigger than the X10/X20, and it has a fixed 23mm 2.0 lens instead of a zoom (although it seems an excellent prime, and I happen to find it has a very useful FOV). The 28-112m (eq.) 2.0-2.8 lens of the X10/X20 is very tempting and the camera is smaller and lighter than the X100, although I am not thrilled by the smaller sensor. So, in case I don't change my mind again, it is a choice between a small sensor camera with a fast zoom lens or one with an APS-C sensor and a fast fixed focal length. Or, as you sugest, a fourthirds camera. There some very interesting lenses for that format, but I haven't liked the ergonomics of the camera bodies I have had the chance to try (very few, admittedly). El 16/03/2013 15:08, Godfrey DiGiorgi escribió: I bought and tried the X10 when it came out, based on how much Cotty liked it, and found that it wasn't for me. I think a good bit of my dissatisfaction with it is that I prefer the results from the larger sensor cameras, but I also find that I'm simply not enthralled by Fuji's controls and menus, throughout their X series lineup. However, I've been very happy with the Leica X2, Ricoh GXR, and Olympus/Panasonic Micro-FourThirds cameras. The larger sensors and versatility of these cameras is a major plus. Even the Leica X2 with a fixed mount, fixed focal length lens proves to have a tremendous range of capability. The one big thing that the Fuji X10/X20 has going for it is the built in optical viewfinder for when you don't want to use the LCD. I solve that lack on the X2, GXR and Oly Pen E-PL1 by fitting an optical viewfinder when I want to work that way. All three of these are substantially less to carry than any of my SLR cameras have been, yet return image quality on par with the SLRs. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

El 26/11/2010 19:51, eckinator escribió: has anyone ever tried blocking the SDM contacts? I doubt that would work though =( Ecke It doesn't work. On the other hand, on the K10D you can roll back its firmware to a previous version, then SDM focusing is disengaged and the camera uses the built-in motor to drive the focusing. I have done it and it works. There are some caveats, though. Firstly, it only can be done with the K10D. I downloaded a 1.1 firmware with a patched header which makes the camera think it is 1.30 version, then it allows to install it on top of the 1.30 version in the camera (that was the firmware which enabled SDM focusing). Afterwards, I updated the firmware to version 1.20 because it adds some valuable changes. Be careful, if you have updated to version 1.31, you can't roll it back using the patched firmware. One of these days I'm going to install version 1.30 again to see if the solution the Pentax tech told you works with my 50-135. OT: Question about a MIDI keyboard and USB port
I know this a completely off-topic question, but I bet there is someone in the PDML who can help a friend of mine to solve his doubts. He's 75 and a computer illiterate. I've been helping him to grasp the basics of Internet and Windows use since last summer. So far I've taught him how to browse web pages, send e-mails and now I'm trying to introduce him to the basic administration of folders, files and disk space. I haven't been very successful so far and I'm beginning to think he should have bought an Apple computer instead. He's also a classical music fan and a bit of an amateur musician and having downloaded a programme which allows him to play music using his laptop keyboard, now wants to go a step further and link his Casio MIDI keyboard to a USB port of his laptop and use it to play music, as it is much more comfortable than using his laptop's keyboard. As I am his computer advisor, he asked me if that was possible. I have looked at the instruction manual of his Casio keyboard, and it has both MIDI IN, OUT and THROUGH connectors. I have seen that MIDI to USB converter cables are easy to find, but knowing nothing about MIDI my questions are: What more is needed for his intended purpose?, Does he need any special software or controllers?, Do I have to perform any configuration changes for Windows 7 to recognize his MIDI keyboard? After what happened to the SDM motor of my 50-135 2.8, I wouldn't risk buying a 16-50mm 2.8, no matter how good it is. Pentax should release a new version of this lens, either with a DC motor (as in the 18-135mm) or a ring motor. Any decent music package will automatically detect the MIDI driver that comes with the device and talk to your keyboard. If the keyboard is an older one, or a less popular one, you may have to fiddle around to map the MIDI commands and such, but it can be done with patience. I have one of the older 2X2 Midisports and I used it under Windows before moving exclusively to Mac. It worked just fine with the Mac driver. Ignore the MIDI-through jack, by the way. Only useful if daisy-chaining devices and nobody does that anymore. Full in/out channels are just too cheap to need daisy-chaining (plus stock serial MIDI runs insanely slowly, about 38Kbps). Re: Tele-Zoom Lens
Daniel, of the lenses you mentioned I have the SMC-F 80-200mm 4.7-5.6 Its advantages are: lightweight, 49mm filter thread, internal zoom (the lens doesn't change its length when zoomed), good IQ (though not outstanding, but better than most people think), cheap price, metal lens mount, fast focusing, small size. On the less side: slow (4.7-5.6), cheap build quality. All in all, its a good lens if you want it small, light and cheap. If you need something faster, you'll pay the price both in money and weight. A better quality alternative is the SMC-F 70-210mm 4-5.6. Its IQ is excellent, at least on film (not to be confused with the FA 70-200mm power zoom or the non-SMC F 70-200 4.5.6). The administration and the largely white staff didn’t know what to do, the school was out of control and on fire frequently and, at one point, the National Guard had to be called in. In 1975 the federal government mandated faculty integration, meaning that if you were a white teacher at a school that had too many white teachers and you wanted to transfer to a school that had too many black teachers, they had to allow you to apply for a position. I had heard about Julian. It was an all-black school on the south side of Chicago. It wasn’t a white school that had re-segregated but rather a brand new school that a prosperous middle class black community had fought for. I ap plied, the principal approved it, and the largely black staff welcomed me and several other Austin teachers with open arms. I had some great classes and some wonderful kids at Julian. I taught Honors English 3 and a special double-period Humanities class. The kids and I went to the Chicago Symphony, the opera and a number of theatrical presentations. We had a great marching band, majorettes and cheerleaders. All in the mid 70s when the white kids in the suburban schools were thumbing their noses at those kind of things. We also had a fabulous football team, and in 1979 we became the first public school in almost 20 years to win a city championship over the predominantly white catholic league schools. I documented much of my time at Julian on film. I have several thousand transparencies and BW negs that I shot during those five happy years. I’ve just begun scanning some of them. I started with that 1979 football championship, but I have many more that I will eventually scan. In March of 1980 I was offered a job in New York at Hearst Magazine Division. The Chicago Board of Education had run out of money and had stopped paying the teachers. We were on the picket line when I got the call. I crossed the line, walked into the office to turn in my resignation on Thursday afternoon, March 7, 1980 and flew to New York the next morning. I still feel guilty. Today, Julian is still somewhat better than the other Southside Chicago High Schools, but the magic is largely gone. The entire south side of Chicago is a mess. The gangs are in control, and kids are shot on the street every day. A number of Julian kids have been killed on their way home from school. It’s had for me to imagine. It’s heartbreaking. But as I get older and less steady, I can't help to think that vertical shots would be easier to hold steady with a vertical grip and shutter button, not to mention the extra battery power and ability to use AA batteries in a pinch. The official Pentax grip, is still kind of expensive, so I've been looking at third party grips. I know probably none of them are weather sealed, but the prices of some a certainly attractive. First question has anyone here used one? Second question was it any good? There are several brands, are there any known differences between them, (not that I expect a real answer to that), it would be nice if a magazine like Pop Photo did a comparison, (anybody else remember when they used to do stuff like that)? So that last one wasn't really a question. I guess my assumption is they're all manufactured in the same factory in China, possibly from the official molds, or close copies, sourced from there by a variety of distributes, but maybe I'm wrong. Hell prices range on Amazon from as low as about $30 to as high as 4 times that, and at any price point they might throw in a of battery or two both battery trays and a charger. Re: My K-7 is dying
I have a K-7 and a K-S2, and the K-S2 is an enormous improvement on the already good and reliable K-7, except for its louder shutter noise. A late K-5 with bugs ironed or a K-5II/K-5IIs would be a very good upgrade for you and I think it fits in your budget. I think a new K-S2 would also be within your budget limits, as it is cheaper in the US than here, but if you have spare batteries for your K-7 that you can use in a K-5/II/s perhaps one of those would be better for you, especially because the feeling in your hand and the user interface would be identical to your present K-7. El 27/01/2016 a las 3:59, Doug Brewer escribió: Hi, troops. As you can see, my beloved K-7 is about to bit the dust. It's become a little reluctant to change shutter speeds, and I'm not sure what shutter speed it's ever on any more. I have used and abused it for years, and now it's tired and wants to go home. I can maybe afford,if a client comes through, a used K5, and here's my question: is it worth getting. I know there have been upgrades to it, but it seems to have gotten decent reviews whe it came out. My other option is to spend a bit more and upgrade my Fuji X100 to the X100S, but that would put me out of the Pentax game. I'd like to stick around, maybe, if the K5 is worth it. Re: update on the new printer UPDATED more :-)
When I had a pair of inkjet Epsoj printers, one of them found in the street and successfully recovered using this software, I used this SSC Service Utility to clean their heads with great results. It hasn't been updated for very long and I don't know if it will work in present Windows versions, but its head cleaning options worked much better than the ones in the original Epson printer driver. You might give it a try instead of trying more drastic cleaning methods. I got a little syringe (free, actually) from my local drug store and I have some little 3/16" (I think) tubing from a spent eyeclass and lens cleaning bottle... I'm ready to attempt flushing out the three key ports... but I may wait until my neighbor returns on Wed. who at least has steadier hands and more experience fiddling with things of this sort than I do - at least in recent times.
