There is also a shareware program out there called Battery Amnesia.
I've found it pretty good for getting rid of the memory effect on my
Powerbook 1400. I cn now get close to 2 hours of "on" time from one

Can another lister or the originator of the battery rebuild website provide a

It will take days for me to dig out the old email post on this.

I'm at a coffee house writing this on my 1400 on wifi.
My machine is a 166 with 40 MB RAM and runs OS 9.1 just fine.

Not as snappy as 8.6 with low RAM space but I like the features enough to put
up with the trade off.
Also some software needs OS 9
A 133 may be better off with 8.6 though.

CF usage has been discussed here before, but when has that ever stopped
us? :)

I used to boot my 5300 from a CF--the 512 has plenty of room to hold a
system folder, and everything loads faster than the HD. I actually had
the system folder on the HD too--when I wanted to use my wifi card--I
never could get the hang of the location manager, so when I wanted to do
wifi, I just popped out the CF, and when the PB couldn't find it's defined
startup device, it defaulted to the next mass storage device, the HD, and
booted from it. Worked just fine until the 5300 died and and I didn't
want to buy a 3rd unit. (Well, I did end up getting a G4 Powerbook, but I
still run my PPC'd 520c at home all the time. :) )

Noah, I had OS 8.6 on a 1400 w/56MB RAM, went to OS 9.0.4, then 9.1
for a while, eventually back to OS 8.6 ...

Do get more real Ram !!!

I agree w/ Howard (see below), I think RamDoubler 8 out performs
Apples Virtual Memory using OS 8.6.

It accomplishes the task in a more efficient manner and is somewhat tweakable
If you do go to OS 9.x, you'll need RamDoubler 9 ...

You could join the LEM Swap List, then place a WTB for a G3 upgrade.
They do pop up occasionally.

 Thanks for any insights,

This may have been discussed in past posts, but I use a CompactFlash
memory card w/ adapter in one of the PCMCIA slots.
I keep some apps on the card to free up HD space.
The CF card will appear and work as a removable hard drive on your Desktop.

NON removable if you direct Virtual Memory to the CF card ...
BAD stuff will happen if you eject the card while the PB is running !!!

Fry's had a 1 day sale recently, 512 MB CF $20 after rebate, $$ to MBs,
not great compared to a used 4 GB HD, but pretty versatile,
and no lost screws ...

What features of OS9 are you really wanting to get? I've considered it, but
haven't heard any compelling reasons to get off 8.5 yet.

Also, I'm a bit curious how you make do with such a smallish hard drive. I

Re: 1400 & Mac OS 9

2006-01-17 Thread yersinia
Noah writes,

Welcome back, Noah. :-)

Now...uh, well...since you say your 1400 is running smoothly on 8.6 and
you like it, and I notice that there's so little difference between OS
8.6 and OS 9, I'd ask you, why bother upgrading? I say this from having
run 8.6 on a Powerbook 5300c and 9.2.2 on a G3 Beige Desktop. The ONLY
difference I ever noted between these two OS's at all is that 9.2.2 is a
faster bootup with a snappier running Finder and apps open faster on
9.2.2 than on 8.6, but that could also be on account of the G3 having a
faster processor and more RAM than the 5300 (100 vs. 266 MHz, 40 MB vs.
256 MB at the time). No, I never tried to put OS 9 on the 5300 -- listers
here said it would crawl on 9.1, and I decided, no thank you.

Then again, I also recall that OS 9.1 on the G3 was also a slow bootup
and sometimes sluggish, certainly in comparison to 9.2.2 (I updated to
9.2.2 because G-listers in droves were saying my G3 would "perk up" if I
did, and they were right) -- and so far as I'm aware, OS 9.1 is the
highest OS even a jazzed-up 1400 can run at all...otherwise I'd suggest
you try 9.2.2, which is the OS I like best.

Well, great to have you back on the list, and good luck!

~Yersinia.

I agree with the other listers; without a G3 upgrade in your 1400, running
OS9 , while certainly possible (a friend has it on his 5300ce!) , is not going
to set any speed records. A 233mhz G3 processor should be in the $50 range
now, or even cheaper is the 183mhz PPC upgrade, if you can find one.

I would also say get yourself the RAM module you need to boost your onboard
RAM up to the max 64mb. Then, instead of using virtual, get yourself a copy of
RAM Doubler. That at least makes the 64mb ceiling possible to deal with.

Finally, apart from some high-end things, 8.6 and 9.0 seem pretty much the
same to me, although admittedly I may not know what I am talking about. I
remember I once was interesed in putting iTunes on my main Powerbook, and
contemplated moving to OS9, but then I found a patch that would allow iTunes to
be used
it 8.6.

Anyway, good luck, and have fun! Patiently upgrading is half the excitement
of resurrecting old 'books!

Agreed. However, with a G3, I *do* recommend OS 9, especially if you have
full RAM. I ran 9.1 on my 1400+G3/333 and it wasn't too bad.

I've tried OS 9.1 on all three of the 1400 flavors and even with 64MB
of RAM they don't run nealry as quick as with OS 8.6. I have always
put OS 8.6 back on the 1400's because it they were too slow.

Without a G3 upgrade in a 1400 it will not handle OS 9 very well.

About the same as my machine. Loads slowly, but works fine.
The hard drive will be a bit cramped.

Re: 1400 & Mac OS 9

2006-01-16 Thread Caleb Cupples
With those specs, I would clearly advise upgrading the RAM in your
1400. It really takes 64 MB of RAM to really make 9 sing, at the least.
Of course, I haven't run 9 on anything less than a G3 Lombard with 192
MB of RAM and the 400 MHz processor, so I can't speak for a 1400.

Download is what you want to do. That's the MacBinary installer. Just
save it to your hard drive.

What plug-in do I have to find and download to be able to download and
use the Netscape 7?
None, select 'Save to disk' if offered, or click and hold on the link
and select 'save link as', and make sure the type in the following
dialog is set to 'source' not 'text'.

I'm sorry, I must have made the mistake of not being specific enough. I

Re: PowerBook 1400cs & Mac OS 8

2004-04-03 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Well, I was just fumbling with the installer, and I found that the
Trackpad control panel is causing the problems. I got the system
installed, works great, the CD isnt machine specific. I know the error
you're referring to, but that's only if you don't dig deep enough. If
you go through the Full Install Pieces folder, the whole Mac OS 8
installer is there.
Well you learn something new every day! I didn't know the workaround
was _that_ easy... I'm glad you got the installer working. Can you
now just unpack the Trackpad control panel from the Tome manually or
is it totally corrupted? It seems odd that a system installer would
have that particular problem - you'd think Apple would have
discovered that in testing...

Peace,
Drew

Re: PowerBook 1400cs & Mac OS 8

2004-04-03 Thread Dana Collins
Hello Joe,
You have the wrong CD for your unit. OS Install CDs will generally come in
two flavors, retail versions (which recognizes all targeted units as
supported, and will install the OS on any of them), and machine-specific
versions, which are shipped with the unit, and are intended to be used only
for the target unit's model type (these CDs have an OS enabler of sorts in
their system folder that, iirc, communicate with the unit's ROM type to
establish recognition). Your CD is expecting a G3 unit - I am surprised that
you get as far as you do in the install process - most of my colleagues that
have tried your route usually receive an error message just after clicking
the install button.

Cast your net out over the swap-list, requesting a retail version of OS 8.1
to buy.
Best regards,
Dana

Of course its perfectly possible.

However in my opinion it would be absolutely terrible. Why would you want
to do this?

For me, 9.2.2 crashed quite often; for one thing, it didn't seem to play
nice with MSN Messenger at all, and even crashed when I was on the Web
sometimes. But the problems went away when I re-blessed my 9.1 system folder
and just dropped in the 9.2 Finder, OT and TCP/IP components. It's more
responsive than an ordinary 9.1 and stable. You might try that to see if it
works for you...some people report that this configuration is flaky for
them, too.

2004-03-15 Thread Dan Palka
I never tried any of the cardbus cards with 7.6.1, and I'm pretty sure
they wont work.

If you're 3400c is like your main or only machine then maybe you should
stick with OS 9. however if you really want to make it seem fast and
you have other machines to use instead of the 3400c I very much so
enjoy system 7.6.1.

Its good for when i take the 3400c to starbucks or my college library
or somewhere i feel another computer user may be interested in finding
out what it is I'm using. System 7.6.1 keeps it fast and impressive
feeling (speed wise).

A 5300c, if it has enough RAM, is definitely faster running OS 8.x than 7.x
unless you have Speed Doubler. In my experience, the best combination for a
5300 is to run OS 8.1 with Speed Doubler 8 installed. The problem is that
Apple's emulator needs an L2 cache to function properly, and of course,
that's something a 5300 doesn't have. SpeedDoubler, among other things, is a
rewrite of some parts of the emulator to make it function better, and is
invaluable on a 5300. It will help a 3400 running OS 7.6 or even 8.1, but
nowhere near to the extent it helps a 5300 (or a cacheless 1400c/117).

The ideal setup for a 3400 would probably be to run 8.6 on it, but I've
settled on an optimized 9.1 install because unlike Dan, my 3400c/240 is by
far the best laptop I own, and I need to make Hooper jump through hoops.

I can't figure out if Kanga supports 7.6 or not; different sources disagree
on that subject. Oh well, one of these days I guess I'll just buy one and
find out for myself.

Re: 3400c & Mac OS 7.6.1 - Slow Window Redraws

2004-03-13 Thread Daniel De L'eau
I have a 5300c, and have run 7.6.1, 8.1, and 8.6 on it. 7.6.1 can feel quite slow, and I think that it's due to Apple's poor emulation of non-power PC code. I purchased Connectix SpeedDoubler and it completely changed the way 7.6.1 felt; it was MUCH faster in opening windows and copying and everything else they claim speeddoubler does. It's an older version so I wasn't able to use it on OS 8.x, but I can tell you that running Quicken 2000 (a power-pc native app) felt faster with 8.6 than with 8.1, maybe because 8.6 is completely power-pc native.

I still prefer using 8.6 because, while it takes five minutes to boot, and feels sluggish with opening windows and such, it crashed far less often than 7.6, thus more than making up for the time it takes to boot. It just sleeps most of the time anyway, so the booting thing doesn't bother me.

Anyway, try SpeedDoubler!

I am actually surprised that 8.1 doesn't run faster than 7.6 on a 3400 with
maxed-out RAM. I have tried them both on a 5300 and 8.1 always seemed more
responsive to me, so I kept it there. I guess with the L2 cache, a 3400 can
emulate old code faster than it can execute the code in 8.1.
I wonder how fast 7.6 runs on a Kanga G3? I bet it would laugh at it.

I don't think thats possible.

7.6.1 definetely boots faster than 8 (without a doubt).

Everything on 7.6.1 feels faster except the window redraws.

It is very fast. It feels great to have it running as fast as it was
when it was "the fastest notebook computer the world has ever seen"

OS9 running on the 3400c wasn't worth the slowness and memory hogging.

System 7 I've found to be able to do everything that I want when I'm away
from my OSX machine, including 802.11b networking, AIM, MS Office 98,
photoshop, email, and web browsing (via iCab). Each new release of iCab
is better and better.

I don't expect my 3400c to do anything amazing, so I don't feel like
using OS9 anymore. If I need to do anything that system 7 cant do I have
my G3 (huzza!!)

I would suspect that 7.6.1 just doesn't do QuickDraw acceleration as well as
8.1 would.

3400c & Mac OS 7.6.1 - Slow Window Redraws

2004-03-11 Thread Dan Palka
So I got my 3400c running 7.6.1 now and it's super duper. Everything
is fast and its pretty stable.

Only one thing bugs me and that is that windows seem to redraw slowly
if I move a window from one location to another. Mac OS 8 didn't do
this - window redraws were immediate. But in 7.6.1 I can actually see
the window redrawing (although if you blink you'll miss it - but its
still pretty annoying). Is there a way to make this snappier like it
is in 8 and above?

Why would 7.6.1 redraw slower than 8? Especially since everything else
runs much faster.

archos jukebox recorder v2 and mac os 8.6 yay!

2004-01-11 Thread H
Okay, I have learned a lot today... for the posterity
of the list, here goes:

Does it work? YES! Well, I knew it did, because I got
the device to load on my pb 3400 this morning, using a
macally usb card under usb 1.1, and I copied files to
it. Those files stared at me all day as I tried all
kinds of nonsense trying to get any of the macs at
home to mount the thing.

So finally after posting unanswered help messages to
every list that seemed relevant, I just started
digging in my reference books and sniffing around in
the apple support docs. The whole thing was about
having the device formatted with a "fat32" format,
which pc exchange has been able to deal with since ver
2.1 under mac os 8.1. Well, according to the
documentation, the device only works when it is
formatted as a fat32, and so it presumably came
formatted correctly because I was able to mount it and
open it at least once, and I really couldn't imagine
that connecting it to my pb just once caused some
catastrophic file fragmentation. I know how to unmount
media, and I'm very careful about it.

So I pulled out the usb card, rebooted the pb, made
sure everything came up and that all the right
extensions were in place, then I rebooted it again. Re
mounted the usb card, then remounted the device.

One difference -- I did NOT connect the ac adapter.
Actually, I just plain forgot. It took a minute (it's
a 20G drive...) but it mounted right up as if nothing
had happened.

Now the manual says ALWAYS use the ac adapter when
connected via usb, and I know that when copying gigs
and gigs of data you can have heavy battery use, so
I'm going to keep that in mind. But on closer
inspection the manual also said the ajbrv2 would only
work under 9.22. :P

I was also able to get it to mount and trade files
with the iMac, but of course that's gossip for another
list. So anyways, if anyone is considering a fancy
dancy usb 2.0 based drive device, have heart and trust
good ol pc exchange with fat32 "pc" formatted media.

H

but I repeated this several times, and also got it to
work on the iMac.

Re: MP3 Player for Mac OS 8.1

2003-12-14 Thread Andrew Kershaw
What type of PowerBook do you have again? It'll make a difference in
what you want to use...

68k PowerBooks can run MpegDec, but shouldn't expect full real-time
44.1 kHz 128-bit playback.
Low end PowerPC PowerBooks (5300, unupgraded 1400s) might want to use
SoundApp PPC. It doesn't have the prettiest interface, but it's
hands-down the lowest resource intensive, yet most capable audio file
player out there. Basically, if you've got a file that contains some
sort of encoded audio and SoundApp can't play it, it can't be played
on a Mac.
Mid range PowerBooks (3400, Kanga) can use iTunes with some success.
You'll probably need OS 8.6 at least, though.

Other than that, there are a handful of players which aren't free
that I like. My favorite is Audion, which I've used nearly every day
for going on more than three years...

Peace,
Drew

MP3 Player for Mac OS 8.1

2003-12-14 Thread Yersinia
Greetings, listers,

I'm wondering if any of you have or know where I can download a free MP3
player which will run on Mac OS 8.1. We tried Cabrio (supposedly for use
on OS 7x-9x) but several downloading attempts resulted in corrupted
copies when we tried to open them. The download process in all cases went
well, it's just that the files were corrupt when they got here.

If you have a working Cabrio you can email me, great. If not (I give up
on downloading it from the web), can you steer me to a different MP3
player compatible with my OS?

TIA,
~Yersinia.

Ah. Perhaps they've fixed this in more recent versions. I'd given up on it
back in the 5.0 versions and figured the minor upgrades since wouldn't have

What browser are you using? With IE, it just isn't worth it because for
every graphic or popup that tries to access something on the blacklist, IE
throws an error dialog that says, in effect (I don't remember the exact
words), "Host not found". I'm pretty sure Netscape did that too, but I've
not used recent versions because the 4.x ones were so bad.

I found using the Hosts file in this way is actually counter-productive, as
it ends up putting a window in your way even in some cases where a window
wouldn't normally pop open.

Re: Popup blockers for Mac OS 9

2003-10-14 Thread Luca Rescigno
Another note - if you want the altered hosts file to work in OS X,
there are some steps you have to do:

1. Open the hosts file in pico using the sudo command so you can get
root privileges for the purposes of saving. Normally etc/hosts cannot
be overwritten, but if you type "sudo pico hosts" instead of just "pico
hosts" it will give you root privileges. Just be careful! If you mess
things up as root, you may have to reinstall the OS!

2. Make sure you're saving over the previous hosts file instead of in a
different place. In pico, this involves hitting control-T (to files)
and using the browser to locate the original Hosts file. You have to
select Hosts in the file listing and hit return, and it should ask you
if you want to overwrite. Type "y" for yes and it will do so. As far as
I know you'll have to do this every time you save your modifications
(i.e. whenever you add another host).

3. You have to open Directory Access and enable BSD Flat Files before
it'll work in OS X. Directory Access is located in
Applications/Utilities/ in the default OS X installation. Just check
the box and click Apply, then quit. It should work. If not, try
quitting and starting up your browser. Then go back and check to make
sure you did all the steps correctly. If you did, it SHOULD work,
although I've had some problems. They mainly come from not saving the
hosts file over the old hosts file.

Re: Popup blockers for Mac OS 9

2003-10-14 Thread Tom Roth

Actually I didn't get any of those errors. Just blank spots where ads used to be and
hardly any pop-ups.

There are some typos in that list the Luca provided the URL for and many duplicates
<http://www.mikey-san.net/blacklist.txt>. I've gone though the list and added some of
my own that I was getting. If anyone would like the final version I'd be happy to
email it to you or if the moderators don't mind I could post it to the PowerBooks
list. Moderators?

In OS 9 the hosts file is just a simple text file that I had living in my System
Folder/Preferences folder. You may find it loose in your System Folder. If you don't
have one at all put it in one of those two places. For those of you who don't know,
the host files allows you to resolve a domain name to an IP number without the use of
a domain name server because you've already listed the domain name's IP number. It
essentially says I've already got the IP number for that domain and therefore it
doesn't consult a DNS. The added trick here is that we've zeroed out these domains by
saying the IP number is 0.0.0.0 instead of what they really are.

In OS 9 once you edit the hosts file you need to go to the TCP/IP Control Panel and
click on the button labeled "Select Hosts File.." and then point to it. You may have
to repoint the TCP/IP Control Panel to the hosts file each time you make changes.
I've not taken time to verify if that is true or not. If you don't see the "Select
Hosts File.." button in your TCP/IP then you need to switch the TCP/IP Control Panle
User Mode to Advanced.

If you still get some annoying ads or pop-ups just check the source for the web page
and once you've found the domain just copy it from there and paste it into your hosts
files. Sometimes you can just click and hold on the banner ad and select "copy link
to clipboard". Other times you actually need to view the HTML source.

PS: You can use this to block "adult" sites and other unwanted sites as well.

You know, I kind of like this idea of blocking the pop ups by listing
them in
the hosts file. While Web Washer works it's slow because it's
creating a
proxy server. This hosts blocking method doesn't slow anything down.
 Might
not catch everything but I can live with that.
Depends on your definition of 'slow' since you have to dispose of all
those
"site not found"-type errors that popup.

- Eric.
In OS X this is not a problem, I don't get "Site Not Found" errors with
either Mozilla Firebird or Safari. In OS 9 it might be, however. But I
read an article about hosts-file blocking a while ago and it says you
can get a clean look by creating a simple, blank HTML file on your
computer and having all the unwanted ads be replaced with this blank
page instead of a 404 page. I have no idea how to do that, because it
was a while ago and I wasn't "in the know" back then, but maybe it
involves Personal Web Sharing? Anyway, good luck.

This seems to work pretty good and the price is right though it does slow down the

Note that all this will do is replace the annoying banner ads with annoying
error messages about 'Source not found' (or something like that).

Also note that although IE doesn't provide for popup blocking, you might
look into Web Washer
(http://www.webwasher.com/client/home/index.html?lang=de_EN)
I've not tried it myself, but it appears to be a proxy server that filters
out the popups.

IE doesn't allow popup blocking. If you want to stop popup ads, you'll
have to disable Javascript (of course that will disable a lot more than
just popup ads). You could also use Mozilla or iCab - both of those can
block popups and are Mac-compatible. To block banner ads, you can alter
your hosts file. I did this in OS X but I am not sure how to do it in
OS 9... basically, you need to open the hosts file and make it so that
whenever your computer tries to load content from a specific domain, it
instead redirects it to 0.0.0.0 (blank nothingness). There's a list of
common ad servers here:

http://www.mikey-san.net/blacklist.txt

Save it as a text file and paste it into your hosts file (I think it's
in the System Folder in OS 9, I know it's in the hidden /etc/ folder in
OS X).

Re: back to earlier mac os, how to? (long) 5300

2003-08-24 Thread Dan K
I made a network access disk for PBs 5300 by installing the Network
Software package onto a 7.6 System tools floppy. To ensure I would have
enough room, I used the minimal Finder and Chooser from the Network
Access Disk. BTW, this same procedure works to build a NAD for PBs
2400/3400 as well, you just need to ensure the 2400/3400 enabler is in
place as those 'Books won't boot from an original 7.6 without it.

Starting with a fresh 7.6 Disk Tools (DT) floppy image, drag that image
file onto Disk Copy's (DC) icon while holding down the command key. DC
will launch to the save-as dialog and prompt for name and what sort of
image type, choose read/write and check the 'Mount Image' box, then
create the disk image. Now mount the image files Network Access Disk
(NAD) and Network Software Installer (NSI) by simply double-clicking them
in the Finder.

Go to the desktop and open the now-mounted read/write DT floppy. Trash
Drive Setup and Disk FirstAid, along with the Finder and Chooser from the
System Folder. Open the mounted NAD and copy the Finder and Chooser into
their appropriate places in the Disk Tool's System Folder. Open the
mounted NSI volume, launch the installer and point it to the DT's System
Folder. Now to make the floppy disk itself . . .

The easiest way to create the actual floppy disk is to drag the modified
.img file onto DC's icon while holding down the option key, that tells DC
you want to make a floppy with the disk image rather than simply mount
the disk image. Alternatively, in DC go to -> Utility: Make a Floppy, and
point DC to the mounted DT volume as the source, then make the floppy
disk.

disk image sources:
1) Disk Tools floppy disk image links:

2) Network Access Disk:

3) Network SW installer:

Disk Copy 6.3.3:

I'd like to be able to post a copy of this somewhere as an already-built
disk, but I'd rather not run afoul of Apple's ever-vigilant legal-eagles.
In any case, it's easy enough for most anyone to do.

I have built-up 7.x disks that can use a PCcard ethernet card, and for
the built-in enet in PBs 3400. Most of those driver resources are pretty
small, so if the basic enet capability is there it usually fits. I know
I also tried this with OS 8.x disks but cannot recall if I had any luck.
Using 8.1 should allow one to install an OS to an HFS+ boot volume. IIRC
the 8.5 floppy didn't have enough room.

Any questions?

Re: back to earlier mac os, how to? (long) 5300

2003-08-24 Thread Robert Eye
Han,

The 2400 won't boot of something as old as MacOS 7.5. The
everymac.com states the baseline OS version is 7.6.

Nor will the 7.5 Network disk boot a 5300. You need at least MacOS
7.5.2 to run a 5300.

How much RAM does it have now? If it has enough to boot 8.6 it should
have enough so you can do a serial transfer between the 6500's
printer or modem port and the 5300's (single) printer/modem port.
It's not quick but it should work (although I've never done it, it's
the quickest, and probably slowest, way to network 2 Macs together).

In fact, here's a site that describes it pretty well:

http://www.atpm.com/network/setup/localtalk_serial.html

You should have all the SW already installed on the Macs - you'll
just need a serial cable for Macs (I don't think PC serial cables
will work - the pin count is wrong as I recall, but I don't remember
which is 9-pin and which is 8).

Just connect the 6500 to the 5300, and copy the 19 disk images from
the 6500 to the 5300. It will take a LONG while to do this, but it
will work. You should be able to open the 1st disk image and install
7.5.3 from there.

You might (I don't recall - I hope someone else chimes in verifying
or correcting my instructions) have to unbless the current System
folder first, by moving the Finder out of the System Folder. Then,
install 7.5.3 and allow the Mac to reboot. It should reboot into
7.5.3.

I am assuming in all this that the 5300 does not have ethernet
ability, either through a PC Card or through one of the Focus
video/ethernet built-in cards. If you have ethernet on both machines,
use it instead. It is faster. The site I linked to above also has
good info on ethernet connecting Macs.

Bob Eye

back to earlier mac os, how to? (long)

2003-08-24 Thread Han
We are fixing up the ol 5300 to lend to a friend this
fall who can't afford to purchase a book for herself
yet. The husband upgraded it to os 8.6, but it really
doesn't have enough ram to support 8.6, and I can't
find an affordable ram upgrade. I used to run 7.5.5
on it without a problem, so I thought we could just
return it to 7.5.5.

Not being able to find my old system 7 floppies, I
went and dl'd the 19 disk image set of 7.5.3 and the
7.5.5 updater and the 7.5 network access disk images.
After dl'ing this to a ppc 6500, I tried to copy the
network access system folder onto a floppy. The
system folder offered was too big to fit on a floppy
(It said I needed 7k more space.) So I trashed a
network extension and control panel, making the system
folder small enough to fit on the floppy.

My intent was to boot from the floppy, then insert the
installer disks and run the 7.5.3 installer. I don't
have the 5300 at hand, (the young woman is playing
with it this weekend to get used to using a mac.) So I
tried to boot a 2400 we have with this 7.5 tools disk
to test the boot disk. We get a dialog box saying
that that the system folder on the disk is
insufficient to run the machine and I should seek a
newer restore disk. So I wasn't able to verify the
bootability of the 7.5 tools disk I created.

Moreover, I have never actually retrograded a
machine's os before. Now I am not sure exactly what
I'm going to need to do to get the 5300 back to 7.5.5.
Do I need to completely reformat the hard drive and
start from scratch? The only time I ever did that
before was a real mess, and I don't remember exactly
how I fixed that problem. Do I need to put some kind
of system enabler on the tools disk to get it to run a
2400 powerbook? or a 5300 powerbook, for that matter?
Do I just need to unbless the system folder?

It has been years and years since I made bootable
floppies on a daily basis, so this may be a simple
trick I just forgot about.

Thanks,

Also, I just wanted to express my thanks for the
help and community offered by the powerbooks list. I
wouldn't be able afford to run a computer right now,
let alone help other people with computer issues,
without the resources of this community.

Re: PowerBook G3 Series & Mac OS 10.2.6 Brightness problem

2003-06-29 Thread Jay Snyder
I had 10.2.2 on a Lombard, and then when I try to upgrade it to 10.2.4, it had
problems booting.I think that 10.2.2 might be the best bet for older Powerbooks.

Diakwarrior is only meant to work on volumes that are mounted; nothing
scary here, some low level volume info got trashed, likely just the disk
driver, that's why you had to use Norton.

Not to grump about topics, but you might find more people who can help on
the G3 powerbooks list, since more of those guys are going to be running X,
than the # of people on the classic list who happen to also have a early
Wallstreet or whatever it was you are working with.

I would check usenet and old macfixit articles (but you have to pay, I
don't use them much anymore) or old G3 powerbook list posts, for starters.

Re: PowerBook G3 Series & Mac OS 10.2.6 Brightness problem

2003-06-28 Thread Byron Gardner
This is got me stumped. I have even switched hard drives. The last time I
tried to install and the PB did it again. This time I can't even mount the
hard drive. It is being resurrected as I type this by Norton Volume Recover.
DiskWarrier couldn't even see it. It mounted with SystemWorks.

In any case, this has got me really worried. If anyone can help I would
really appreciate it. I am beginning to strongly suspect a hardware here. It
is obviously a screen problem. Cable maybe. I just replaced a broken hinge
on the left side. I am thinking something is amiss with the display. Anyone
tell what to check?

Need help...this is sooo not good.

Re: PowerBook G3 Series & Mac OS 10.2.6 Brightness problem

2003-06-28 Thread Thad Hoffman
Similar thing happened to me and my 7600 G3. I had 10.0.4, went back to 9,
then tried to install Jaguar later. I had to erase the drive inside OS X's
installer before it would work. Apparently, unless you really erase the
drive, some OS X files stick around and cause probs on re-install.
This may not be you're issue, but it sounds awfully similar.

I would try erasing the drive/partition from the installer before you
install if that is possible for you to do without losing stuff.

All right, Jay here's one for you to ponder. I am trying to install OS X
10.2 on my WallStreet. The installation gets 2/3 of the way through and then
the screen either goes dark or becomes light with no other image or has
multicolored lines running down the middle and I am forced to restart with
the three finger salute. This PB has had OS X 10.2.6 on it before but I
reformatted and went back to OS 9. What is the deal???

This is a quirk with OSX on the wallstreet, and your PRAM battery is also probably bad.

Boot into OS9 (8 might work too), then boot into OSX, and that should fix it until you
powerdown again.

If it isn't remembering the date & time, and also has trouble with powerup from
battery, then your PRAM battery is probably bad.

PowerBook G3 Series & Mac OS 10.2.6 Brightness problem

2003-06-28 Thread Jean-Philippe Pellet
Hi,

I recently acquired for $200 a PowerBook G3 Series (Rev. I) and I
decided to install Jaguar on it. 10.2.0 ran fine, but after I upgraded
it to 10.2.6 with the combo updater, I began having the following
problem: when I startup the Mac, the screen brightness is OK as long as
I can see the spinning 'cursor' with the Apple logo. Then, when the
startup progress bar appears, the screen turns to black until the
startup process is finished, and only when it is finished do I get a
chance to turn the brightness on again using the brightness buttons
(one press on the button is enough to turn brightness completely on
back again).

Do you know what could be causing that problem?

TIA,
JPP

There is a good website still that as all of the systems up to 7.5.5 for
free download, including system 7 pro (7.1.1).

I forget where, but I always find it on google after a few minutes of
searching when I need some old OS.

The title of the page was "where to download the macos"

Re: Mac OS

2003-02-13 Thread RaceCivicR
I've gotten it to work fine (tested on a 520c and Quadra 800). Don't get me
wrong, it's not easy but I'll do my best to describe how I did it. First I
downloaded the whole 19 files and then decompressed the whole deal (gives you
a folder which is your installer). Anyway, I then used it to instal the basic
OS (custom instal) onto a blank hard drive which now gave me my system
folder. Now the hard part. I then used disk copy to make me a blank image
file (use standard hfs) and threw the installer and the system folder onto it
so now when you open the .img file you have your installer and the system
folder on it. I then used Toast Ti 5, selected other (hold down on the mouse)
and then selected Mac Volume and this gives you the option to select the
mounted image. Select it, click bootable (gotten weird results selecting
optimize on the fly, might want to unclick it) and presto a bootable 7.5.3
installer.

You may also want to add the 7.5.5 updater to the disk as well. Just be sure
to put the updater into it's own folder, make an alias and put that next to
the 7.5.3 installer icon.

I tried to burn bootables cds for older macs and it doesnt work - the

old mac freezes -

they are all like discimages that is started from the first one,

there is no install system present in theese diskimages - just an

installer,

you could as I finally did take the system files from a 8.1 cd and

then burn the diskimages together with that, start from the 8.1

system on the cd and install the 7.5.3 wherever you want it.

Wow, I'm glad this confusion seems to be solved! I thought I'd been
having hallucinations! :-)

Yes, I see what you mean. I guess I go by...Whatever gets the job done,
whether it be orthodox or just by luck. Having no formal training in any
of this, I'm lucky that I can almost always fanagle stuff to come out
with the desired effect.

Fran
