Well, it looks like Adfinis decided to kill it. That was set up in the

a server, got Google rank thanks to our prominent links and then moved
away with our data. At least, all references to the Adfinis link should
be removed.

No, that was the manual. Tests were meant to be on Testlink, or at least
I cannot find them in the wiki.

Manual Tests (it says outdated) are here [3]. Link to the Test Case
Management is also a 404.

This is indeed obsolete. TCM is from the pre-Apache era, it was hosted
by Oracle and, despite numerous requests done by myself and others
around 2012, Oracle refused to contribute test cases to the ASF due to
their unclear licensing and copyright. So all references to TCM are
obsolete and there is no hope to get TCM testcases back, unfortunately:
they provided very good coverage and helped building a QA community.

Yes, let's keep it out of the picture indeed. Just, it is cleaner under

   * Handle the Wiki Publisher and PDF Import extensions as integrated

Can you elaborate on this? For example the fact that they shouldn't ping

reasonable release pace). And actually the document suggests that
bundled dictionaries are handled as integrated extensions, which is not
the case at the moment - and this allows users to get, for example, a

Someone should fix the broken spellcheck problem. It generates a lot of

We've investigated it a length; it is uncommon (it seems common due to

Andrea Pescetti wrote:

On 23/08/2016 Kay Schenk wrote:

WARNING: This is quite long!

And the discussion was even longer, but I'll start with answering this one.

And I'll first note that:

1) Work is not starting now. We have years of code already committed and
not shown in previous releases.

2) Like for every release, we make plans but at a certain point we have
to cut the release and this "wishlist" is thus a tentative guideline.

*PRIORITIES*
1. Update the localization.
We've had quite a bit of work by the localization folks since the 4.1.1
release. This was the last release, in 2014-08-21 to import localization
updates. Currently, it seems we might also add 3 new languages: Uyghur,
Sinhala, and Icelandic with the 4.2 release. This would include both UI
translations and Help translations.

Last translations import were done in 4.1.0 and not 4.1.1 (if I recall
correctly); but this is a minor detail. There are no new languages to be
expected in 4.2.0: we have new languages in Pootle, but I don't think
any of them is ready enough for being released (this may of course
improve with time). So in short 4.2.0 means that we can add strings to
the code, which means we can make them available to translators, which
in turn means we can (we have to) update all translations.

We need volunteers to lead this endeavor. I, personally, don't know
anything about this process.

I'm slowly working on this but I still have something to find/learn.
I've sent the l10n list a mail sending that I'm planning to test a first
import in early September - just to test the process.

2. Update Java requirement from Java 1.5 to *at least* Java 1.7
I am rather adamant that we change our building requirement to Java 1.7
for all platforms. I will be changing that in our Building Guide today.

Is there a real reason for it? I see this like saying (this is just an
example, not to be taken literally) "we drop support for Windows XP
since it's old and unsupported". In short: if we need work to drop Java
1.5 then we have clear advantages in raising our requirement to 1.7,
otherwise we can simply drop the requirement saying "we won't explicitly
test compatibility with Java < 1.7"; but in that case we must provide
ways to obtain a compatible JRE for all the 4 supported platforms.

3. Issues for inclusion
We need to include submitted/tested patches since 4.0.x. This should not
include UI changes which would need to undergo a much longer test period.

The version number is not a detail. We call it 4.2.0 since UI changes
are allowed. On the other hand, we don't have to include all patches;
actually, seeing all the code that already went in, I would be more on
the conservative side here.

Additionally, issue 127068, involving analytics on our source code would
surely be worth investigating.
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127068

These are automatically found defects, good for easy fixes but probably
not really important.

I'd rather suggest that we give some attention to the 4.1.2 regressions,
especially this one (the only one so far):
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126622

*BUILDBOTS AND CONFIGURATION*
1. Move to different buildbots?

Not needed. A "nice to have" if they standardize it, but buildbots (I
mean, the Linux version they use) are not so relevant for a release.

2. Configuration Issues
Add, at least the ant version we're checking for in our configuration is
not the version recommended in our Building Guide.

The this is a bug in configure, needs its own issue and must be checked.

*PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT* ...
It has
been suggested that we use the ASF buildbots to produce our binaries
with this release.

The ASF buildbots and releases cover two different fields. I've been
misunderstood from time to time, but just to make it clear: I would
never want that we use the buildbots for releasing (at least for Linux),
since you want a recent Linux on buildbots and on old Linux on the
release VM (where this VM is hosted can be deferred to a separate thread).

Andrea has volunteered to set up a production environment for us. SEE:
http://markmail.org/message/b4dbjdeu4llczqwt

I see that discussion has been misunderstood. I'll reply there. It
suffices to say, here, that I'm not suggesting to use buildbots for the
release builds. Which basically means I agree with your point of view in
this respect.

   Andrea.

There I have got couple of files.

The English version for Windows is here:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/4.1.2-rc2-r1707648/binaries/en-US/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.2_Win_x86_install_en-US.exe

If you need another version, look withing the "binaries" folder.

Do you want some issues to verify? Just open

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/buglist.cgi?bug_status=CONFIRMED_status=ACCEPTED_status=REOPENED_status=RESOLVED=flagtypes.name_id=170870=substring_format=advanced=---=FIXED=4.1.2_release_blocker%2B

and comment on the issues that are RESOLVED FIXED.

For example, 126480 is very easy: Just check that the version number in
the window you reach through the "About" menu says correctly 4.1.2.

And 126567 asks you to check that in the same window you read Copyright
2015 and not 2014.

For every successful check, please write that you verified it with
version 4.1.2-RC2, English, Windows (for example).

You need a Bugzilla account to post comments: register get one at
https://bz.apache.org/ooo if you don't have one already.

Fwd: Release status - Please test OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC2

2015-10-15 Thread Andrea Pescetti

(I'm forwarding this call for tests to the QA list and the l10n list)

It is very important to test OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC2 thoroughly: please
download it from
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/
and use it for your normal tasks but also to mark as "VERIFIED" the bugs
listed at
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/buglist.cgi?cmdtype=dorem_id=170764=4.1.2_approved_and_fixed=run_id=7

Bugs marked as RESOLVED FIXED must be set to VERIFIED or REOPENED. Note
that many are still in RESOLVED FIXED state but have indeed been
verified if you read the issue. In that case it is enough to change the
issue status, but an extra verification is always helpful.

Remember, building a new Release Candidate takes time and effort, so:
- It is time to be more careful with release blockers: you can still
propose a Release Blocker, but please accept that it will likely be
denied unless we are sure that it is low-risk and important.
- I do not exclude that an RC3 will come, but we want RC2 to be fully
tested before building it, and we must definitely avoid an RC4.

These bugs are now open for a possible RC3:
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126586 from Damjan; nedds
more information, asked.
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=107619 Bug in Find & replace
with regular expression: already accepted blocker, solution was
incomplete in RC2, now supposedly fixed
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126582 When trying to access
a read/only share on Sharepoint an error is shown: This is new but it
addresses the same use case of the other Sharepoint fixes
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126573 Dictionaries were
actually not updated in some cases, probably due to a not completely
clean build, to be investigated
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126588 Portuguese dictionary
to be updated: I'll now ask the l10n list to suggest other possible
dictionary updates.

So: not many bugs so far, and not so bad. But we will have the full
picture only if everybody helps in testing, it's very easy to do so.

Regards,
  Andrea.

OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC2 available (and happy birthday!)

2015-10-13 Thread Andrea Pescetti
As a small gift for the 15 years of OpenOffice (OpenOffice was released
as Open Source on 13 October 2000, as Louis reminded us during ApacheCon
Budapest), we now have OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC2 available.

OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC1 has been tested for more than a week without major
bugs or regressions reported. Almost all relevant issues were tested and
verified fixed, even though we still need help with some.

Note that, since there is still some delay for building and uploading,
RC2 is current as of revision 1707648 (last accepted commit, see
https://svn.apache.org/viewvc/openoffice/tags/ for the SNAPSHOT change),
so 4 days ago.

A few reported bugs on RC1:
- RC1 was missing Linux 64-bit DEB packages and had some incorrect
scripts for source checksums; these are now fixed.
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126305 additional patches
were needed, these are in RC2
- Windows installation: a user reported "Installation aborted with the
message that I lack access to registry". See http://s.apache.org/Z6v and
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126587 ; RC2 should not have
any changes in this respect, but possibly Windows users can
explain/check/guide.
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=107619 is not completely
solved, a fix came when RC2 was already being prepared and it is not
included

- Several release blockers were addressed (Bugzilla link below)

RC2 can be downloaded from
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/
open "binaries", then the language code, then you will find installers.
If you can't download it now, it means it is still synchronizing, try
again in a few hours.

For QA, the link to use for verifying "release blocker" bugfixes is this
one (you will need a Bugzilla account to see it and to verify bugfixes):

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/buglist.cgi?cmdtype=dorem_id=170710=4.1.2_approved_and_fixed=run_id=7

Only the issues marked as RESOLVED FIXED are still to be checked. If you
verify that everything works as expected, please mark the issue as
VERIFIED FIXED (or post a comment, specifying your Operating System and
language). It is fine and useful to have two independent verifications
of a bug, especially on two different operating systems.

Remember: testing is important since 4.1.2-RC2 can be a release we
actually vote upon. We are seeing a few release blocker requests coming
in but I'll wait that everything is properly tested before seeing
whether this deserves a RC3. So if you didn't test RC1, please test RC2;
you can actually use it for day-to-day tasks too for a few days, for
more realistic testing.

Replies to the QA list only, if possible, thanks.

Regards,
  Andrea.

OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC1 available for testing

2015-10-03 Thread Andrea Pescetti
We have the first Release Candidate of OpenOffice 4.1.2 available for
testing. So it's time to get serious with tests. We'll run tests for at
least a full week as agreed.

Note: we will not vote on this Release Candidate. But it should be
widely used for tests. Volunteers are recommended to install it and
check both common usage and the specific bugfixes.

Builds are available at
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/4.1.2-rc1-r1705606/binaries/

Once you choose the language, the filename should be rather clear. The
English version for Windows, for example, is at

https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/4.1.2-rc1-r1705606/binaries/en-US/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.2_Win_x86_install_en-US.exe

How to help: use this link provided by Kay (you may need a Bugzilla
account; just ask in case)

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/buglist.cgi?cmdtype=dorem=run=4.1.2_approved_and_fixed_id=7

and you will find a list of fixes. Pick one that is set as "RESOLVED
FIXED". Verify (with the RC1) that the bug is indeed fixed, and mark it
as VERIFIED. Ask on the list (dev or qa, depending on where you see
this; qa preferred) if you need assistance.

Known issue: Linux 64-bit builds in DEB format are missing. We will
recover them as soon as possible. On the other hand, this week's
optimizations will allow much faster and direct uploads in future.

Special thanks go to Juergen and Herbert for assistance and guidance,
and to Infra for a lot of technical help.

I thought that Target (the one I'm asking for) would always be 4.1.0,
4.1.1, 4.1.2 without -dev and that instead Version would have the

Bugs for 4.1.2

2014-12-29 Thread Andrea Pescetti

(I'm BCCing the QA list for information)

So we want to release 4.1.2. The main feature will be warning-free
digitally signed installers under Windows. Other bugfixes may be
included as well, provided we can fix them soon, in a safe way and
provided they are of some significance. As explained, translation fixes
and (English) string fixes cannot be included.

First someone with Bugzilla admin privileges should add 4.1.2 to the
Target Milestone field in Bugzilla. I would not add a flag to request
a blocker, unless someone prefers to have it too.

Then, if developers and QA volunteers could take a look at the following
lists of bugs we can decide what to include.

The first list is a saved search by Kay, previously posted here
(Bugzilla account required):

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/buglist.cgi?cmdtype=doremlist_id=163422namedcmd=4.1.x%20regressionsremaction=runsharer_id=7
Nothing there is FIXED yet, so these issues definitely need work if we
want to see them fixed in 4.1.2.

The second list is a list of bugs I compiled, based on the (already
FIXED, or with a patch reviewed and ready to be committed) bugs that can
have some relevance for 4.1.2:

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=63015
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=125495
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=125922
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=118919
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=125475
Here the assessment must be on the risk to include them or not.

Then there are these two which will be fixed with the support for
warning-free digital signatures for internal components and the main
installer respectively:

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=119949
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=119017

And this one that was asked on the l10n list and should be feasible
(Lithuania switches to Euro):

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=125980

Please take a look in the next few days, and propose new ones if
relevant (remember: string changes are not allowed, translation fixes
are not allowed, FIXED bugs are much more likely to be accepted), but
then I suggest that we wrap it up and start working on the release.

Regards,
  Andrea.

It works perfectly! Sorry about the noise.

OK, good.

I still think that it doesn't make sense that this is an optional download.
If creating a Hybrid PDF is a feature included in AOO what is the sense
that trying to reopen the file you just created will show you an Import
ASCII dialog?

Without the extension OpenOffice cannot create or open hybrid PDFs. With
the extension it can do both.

I have an Hybrid PDF that crashes AOO 4.2 every time when the file is
opened/dropped
However this does not happen if the PDF import extension is installed.

This is a crash to report then. The fact that what you are opening is a
hybrid PDF is irrelevant: you are simply opening something that makes
OpenOffice (dev version only, but please check and mention this) crash,
and this is a priority bug.

But what I really hope is that the extension will be included in the next
release, which would solve the bug and improve AOO ;)

There are restrictions to what we can do with that extension due to
problematic licensing of some libraries it uses. So the reason for not
including it in OpenOffice is legal (or better: checks to make on the
legal side) rather than technical. OpenOffice is extremely careful about
licensing.

If your problems are related to the former, try with the latter. If you
have problems with the latter, then please write here (Ariel maintains
the latter, not as part of his volunteering in OpenOffice strictly
speaking; but he does maintain it).

I think that the loss of hybrid PDF editing is a real regression for AOO

Please check with the right version and report the regressions you find.
It's still good to know.

Furthermore, opening a PDF in AOO 4.0 or 4.1 tries to convert the document
from ASCII (which makes sense) but immediately crashes AOO 4.2

Anything that crashes OpenOffice (even if you open a totally random
sequence of bytes named test.odt) is an OpenOffice bug. So if you have
a file (of whatever type) that crashes OpenOffice 4.2-dev (especially if
no extensions are installed), please open an issue, attach the file

Re: Full Installation vs. Language Pack

2014-08-20 Thread Andrea Pescetti

Pedro Lino wrote:

http://www.openoffice.org/download/full_vs_lp.html ...
Since OpenOffice 3.4.0 dictionaries are no longer included in language
packs, only in full installations. Dictionaries are not part of the
OpenOffice project but stored on the extensions website (hosted by
Sourceforge.net). They get improved independent of the release schedule of
OpenOffice and are offered separately. They can be updated at any time when
new versions are released.
does not make *any* sense.

Well, it does! I mean, all pieces are correct, but they are juxtaposed
in a bad way that indeed does not clarify anything and leads to wrong
interpretations.

Aim of the text is to say:
- Full installs have bundled dictionaries
- Language packs do not (not because of any policy, but simply because
we haven't adapted them yet to do so; the link you see in the page goes
to a bug report, for this reason)
- All dictionaries have their independent schedule, so their updates are
not necessarily aligned to the OpenOffice updates and their content is
not controlled by the project.

If you want to rephrase the page to reflect these concepts in a clearer
way, we can surely update it.

Dictionaries are allowed to be included in the
Full Install but not on the Language packs because they are not part of
the OpenOffice project???

Wrong conclusions. It is a merely technical issue, see link in the
original page.

Is it just me who sees a double standard here?
If they are NOT part of the Project then NONE of them can be included with
the Full Install...
I think Apache needs to make this license problem clear...

There is no double standard and no ambiguity (except for the badly
written text). You will see a huge, successfully concluded, legal
analysis at https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-117

I hope this is just some confusion and that in the next version the
Dictionaries are also included in the Language packs (and the help page is
corrected)

That's the aim. For sure, once the bug is fixed, we have no policy
obstacles. We just need someone to take care of this bug!

Would it still be possible to include that version in RC2 if they update it
at the Extensions site?

I see some confusion at
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/project/european-portuguese-dictionaries

Maintainers of bundled extensions are expected to always upload their
releases to the Extensions site.

The site offers you to host the extension either locally or on another
server, but dictionaries are a build dependency, so we won't include
external download URLs (simple reason: if uminho.pt turns off their
server, the OpenOffice binary releases can't be built).

Here I see that the maintainers uploaded a version numbered 14.7.8.2
that is externally hosted (on uminho.pt). To fix this, they must upload
a version with a higher number that is internally hosted (on
extensions.openoffice.org). Otherwise, it will happen that OpenOffice
reports an available update upon install. The latest version appearing
at http://sourceforge.net/projects/aoo-extensions/files/1196/ is the one
that will be included.

Nothing to add to what Ariel wrote. It makes perfectly sense to add a

This is quite correct. Version 4.1.1 is not released, so we will have
4.1.1 in Bugzilla after 4.1.1 is available, and use it only for bugs
found in the final 4.1.1.

If I now find a bug in a 4.1.1-dev snapshot, I would check with a trunk
snapshot if this happens there too, then report it for trunk (this is
basically what you did) and nominate it as 4.1.1 blocker if it is a
severe bug that needs attention now and needs to be considered for the
coming 4.1.1-RC phase. In a way, there is no 4.1.1-dev since 4.1.1 is
4.1.0 plus some bugfixes that are all backported from trunk (4.2.0-dev).

Welcome! OpenOffice can indeed offer you many opportunities for

Keerthana Aravamudhan - I am currently persuing my MS in Computer
Science and I'm in my 3rd semester . I have about 6 years of
experience as a Quality Assurance Engineer and I'm also familiar with
Java and C . I need to contribute to an open source project for the
duration of this semester (ending in July) . So I was hoping if I
could contribute in development and QA for 5 hrs a week.

If you wish to start immediately and you have 5 hours/week, join the
ongoing tests. Subscribe to the QA list

http://openoffice.apache.org/mailing-lists.html
and then send a note saying that you would like to join the ongoing
tests; include your preferred username so that we can create accounts
for you, and include details on the operating system(s) you use. Then an
optimal way to combine your development and QA skills is to port some of
our automated tests to Google Test. See
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Googletest but ask the dev list for
precise instructions.

Sowmya Sama - I am co-student of Keerthana, enrolled in MS in
Software Engineering. I have around 3 years experience as C# .Net
developer and familiar with Java. I would like to contribute along
with my team for about 5 hours a week in either Development aspect or
Documentation.

Documentation is a field where you can help immediately. We have a list
of pages that need proofreading right now. For example:
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/UserGuide/UI and
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/UserGuide/Formatting
We can create a wiki account for you if you send the doc list (please
subscribe, see above) your preferred username; then you'll be able to
edit pages. As for Development, the hardest initial step is to get
OpenOffice to build. See
http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-development.html to get
started.

Sathyashree Narasimha - I am currently enrolled as a Non- Degree
student and aspiring to pursue the Masters Degree in Information
Technology. I am familiar with C# and Java. I will be glad to
contribute 10 hours per week contributing towards testing and
documentation. ?

What I wrote above about testing and documentation applies. In your
case, you should subscribe to both the QA and Documentation lists. You
and Keerthana could also help in confirming unconfirmed bug reports.
This is an easy way to help with QA and very useful to the project. See
http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html for more information.

I'm not sure this would give any results. Maybe OpenOffice caches the

You cite https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124717 as the

I agree, though, that we should consider a 4.1.1, and maybe schedule it

common sense how we should proceed.
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Specification_template seems a little
oversized, too complex and so rather deterring.

Contrary to popular belief (at least in some circles), many things at
Apache became easier, not more complex! So: for sure we won't be
requiring that specification template any longer.

What we have seen at Apache is something like Oliver's specification for
his work on input fields:

https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Writer/Input_Fields
(and Andre and others wrote clean, easy specification pages too).

In all cases, though, this was maintained directly by the developer
working on a feature. So I suggest that you give a real developer
(probably Oliver in this case) the possibility to assess the idea and
tell us if it makes sense and how complex it is to implement. Then,
depending on his feedback and subject to availability of someone who
knows, it can be developed by an existing developer, proposed for a
Summer of Code project and so on.

I'm only addressing this issue: you can use the archive build (the arc
file) if you are just testing functionality and not packaging.

The RPM build contains relocatable RPMs (i.e., with specific RPM options
you can install them where you wish). Probably there is a way to
relocate the DEB packages too.
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Run_OOo_versions_parallel could be
helpful: in the RPM case, it seems correct but unnecessarily complex,
since in practice it's enough to run something like (one line)

$ rpm -ivh --dbpath $install_path/.rpm --nodeps --prefix $install_path *.rpm

Edwin uses the DEB packages while everybody else here probably tested

Accelerators are defined algorithmically by OpenOffice when not

Accelerators in PO files are marked by ~: F~ormat means that the
