Buy to purchase my new computer and they seemed relatively reasonable here,
but there is a lot of competition.

I know you use Dragon NaturallySpeaking, so be careful if you are planning on
purchasing a new computer. The Best Buy I went to only had two systems
which were not 64-bit. They had the same speed as my old computer which just
completely crash two weeks ago, so I know those systems could not possibly
carry Vista with Dragon NaturallySpeaking simultaneously.
I need up having to go with a system that had 3 GB of memory and a 32-bit
system. In case you're wondering, I call Nuance and they had no idea when
Dragon will be compatible with a 64-bit system. They told me it definitely
wouldn't be this year and possibly not until late next year. This sounds
strangely reminiscent of what happened with Vista the first time.

it's a little bit disconcerting how reliant have become on this electronic

Re: [QUAD-L] Dragon with Vista

2008-10-13 Thread John S.
there is an inherent problem with running dragon on Vista and even some XP
platforms where a speech engine already exists. Two just can't live together
aside from the 64 and 32 bit awkwardness. Most of you have some ginormous hard
drives. You can have Vista and XP by simply partitioning that big beast. Then
have your old xp completely copied to your d-drive. I haven't actually seen
this done for this purpose but I know gamers that insist it is will work.
When I looked on the Web site I found that Dragon NaturallySpeaking ten is now
available. I don't know if any of you have tried it, but I still think that
there will be a problem with running two different speech engines from the same
operating system. I'm sure for a lot of you running alternate operating systems
on the same computer is nothing new. Some of you might feel it is more
complicated and all I can say is, yes it is. You will get more from your
computer and also have a chance to test microsofts vista and see if it really
is that good.

If you're hard drive is big enough you can do what John suggests. I am told
it will work, but you need somebody that knows what they're doing in order
to install Windows XP on a partition hard drive. I am not sure how you were
able to install it on a 64-bit system, because when I tried it the software
immediately told me it would not load.
Asked for knowbrainer, I would suggest going to the forum and trying to pose
a question. Make sure you articulate what's going on with your computer as
much as possible. There are quite a few NaturallySpeaking aficionados that
give out free advice.

 Dana,
I am sorry I didn't see this response earlier. You can write to the website
I gave you, but I would suggest e-mailing them again. They have been really
good about responding to my questions when I have purchase something from
them and for that matter even when I have not.
Your system is a 32-bit system based on the information you provided below.
The only thing you should need is the NaturallySpeaking 9.5 upgrade. It's
free if you have NaturallySpeaking 9.
I had some problems a long time ago using NaturallySpeaking with a laptop.
The majority of those problems were the result of the sound card. There is
a USB POD which can help your microphone operate much more efficiently with
a laptop. The best way he can know whether it's your soundcard or not is to
listen to how your voice sounds when you have dictated. Let me know if you
don't know how to do this and I will walk you through it.

Yes I did Steve. I found it to be remarkably accurate and it does have the
capability of surfing the web. I just didn't think it was good enough for
me because it didn't have a good playback feature that I could find.
Perhaps I didn't look hard enough, but I tried all of the help pages and
just could not discover how to have the system play back what I said.

I think for people that have not used Dragon or are not intricately linked
with the program it is a really good system. I recommended it to my brother
for short e-mails and and other correspondence.
That's just my opinion. I was extraordinarily surprised at how accurate it
was. I have become accustomed to dictating and then going back later and
correcting my errors, if there are any. When I do that it's difficult to
know what I said if I'm correcting it about 10 to 15 minutes later and I'm
not able to listen to the playback mode.

I have one of those heaters sitting in my room, but I really haven't used it
over the last two years. I have, on the other hand, used an electric
blanket to warm up my bed, but I have discovered a leave electric blanket
on, even on a very low setting, I overheat to easily. I found it better
just to put quite a few blankets over me.

Then again, I live in Florida and what I perceived to be cold is warm by
everybody else's standards. At least when it comes to winter weather.

I have often wondered how much electricity those heaters suck up.
Personally I have not had those heaters warmed my room too well.
Old-fashioned type used to do much better, but they are extremely
dangerous. I always make sure that I have an appliance module on them so I

of it is for warming up a room?

2008-10-13 Thread Tod E. Santee
Hi Tim, Others:

My wife and I used one once when we were staying at a small, po-dunky motel in
a particularly cool part of AZ. We froze most of the evening (it *was* below
freezing outside) but then later we both woke up quite hot (or for me,
overheated) around 2:00am.

That sucker warmed the place up A LOT but took forever to do it. Maybe they
heat a little quicker and more evenly now... don't know.

Best regards,
Tod

Then again, I live in Florida and what I perceived to be cold is warm by

Re: [QUAD-L] Radiator type space heater

2008-10-13 Thread John S.
Dear Tim,
I use one and find it to be great on the coldest nights. The trick to getting
the most from one is to use a small fan to push air past it or I turn on my
ceiling fan on low so you feel no breeze, but air is moving. With it set on 600
watts and turned to 30 percent on the dial I still wake up and turn it down.
During the day I turn on a box fan blowing through it and out my door into the
rest of the place. I haven't used my furnace since 2000. Not sure it even
works. I do have two of these type heaters and I'm comfy.
The trick is to move air past them.

Yes indeed, it *can* get very warm under an electric blanket. But, I'm in
Boston and skimp on heat all winter with my thermostat to 50 or less at night.
No problemo under my precious blankey, though. Even set to '2' (of 10), I'm
comfy as the proverbial bug in a rug. Mmmm, even this time of year (with the
heat still off) it feels great as the night temps dip towards that killing
frost. I get warm all over just writing/thinking about settling in under it
later tonight.

You might want to vote for someone that doesn't view the poor and disabled as
society's dregs. A lot of people don't see why it is important. I live in a
county where there is 11 different hospitals and yet, I can only go to one.
Three of the hospitals no longer have ER's so don't think you can get your
uninsured child in them.
Since I stopped working, and I'm no longer able to  pay $545 a month for health
insurance, it has become apparent that I'm not welcome at medical facilities.
In attempting to cut ten percent from doctors pay on medicare itr is obvious
that people without health insurance are being denied quality health care. So,
elect Mccain and sign your DNR like a real robopublican and keep not asking
questions. If your just voting for someone not black, well, your hopeless
