I'm sure this has already been discussed, but is there a way to save the state 
of a virtual machine, instead of shutting it down? I can't find any info in the 
docs on what exactly pausing a VM does, but could this be similar?

[qubes-users] Two disposable VM options?

I've been thinking that it would be handy to have two options for a disposable 
VM: online and off. I know I can change the default VM, but I often think that 
it would be nice to have two options always available. (E.g. from the menus, 
have something like "open in disposable VM" and "open in offline disposable 
VM".)

Or, it would probably be more useful to have the option to choose the VM 
template for the disposable VM in a popup, much like qvm-move-to-vm. I'm not 
sure how technically difficult this would be, but as a user I would personally 
find this very handy.

Would this be useful to others?

Loren,

You can't configure disposable VMs for individual qubes - what you can
do is change the netVM which will apply if you start a disposableVM from
that qube. The dispVM that will be started is determined by the default
dvm, and this is set by qvm-create-default-dvm.

As John said, you can only have one default dvm, but it's trivial to
work around this with a small script. It's possible to do this because
qvm-create-default-dvm does NOT remove the files for old dvms. You can
see this if you generate a new default-dvm, and then look in
/var/lib/qubes/appvms.
So if you generate a number of different dvms based on different
templates, it's simple to switch between them before launching a new
dispVM. The launch time isn't noticeably different from starting up a
new dispVM, and voila - multiple template disposable VMs on the cheap.

I do this without any apparent ill effects, but it certainly isn't part
of the canon.

I'm confused about running disposable VMs - if I open a browser or file viewer, 
then want to open a terminal for the same VM, how could I do this? (E.g. I want 
to view an untrusted file, then make some edits.)

Is there a way to configure the default disposable VM in the Qubes menu? I see 
that disposable VMs can be configured for individual domains, but I can't find 
where the generic one is.

Also, is it possible to specify a different template for disposable machines? 
Say I'm running something based on the default fedora-23, and I want to open a 
document from my work VM, which uses that template. But I want to open it with 
my fedora-23-custom template as a disposable VM. (E.g. running a video in VLC 
that has untrustworthy components.) Is this doable?

I've attached a hardware report for an Asus G750JW. I can say that Qubes 
appears to run just fine overall, but with a few limitations. The most 
important is the wifi -- the Broadcom unit installed isn't supported, so no 
wifi out of the box. Somewhat annoying, but workable, is the monitor - the 
display brightness doesn't work, so it's stuck at 100%. This is a known issue 
with the kernel, and may be fixed in future releases. Could be worse, but still 
annoying. Also, the keyboard functions don't work out of the box. Things like 
the keyboard backlight brightness, wireless on/off, enable/disable touchpad, 
all don't work. However, the volume buttons do work, along with the monitor-off 
button. I didn't really try any of the other functions or the webcam/mic.

Then you can do: redshift -l lat:lon &
Then just to quickly test, maybe adjust the system time, and see how it turns

Thanks for the info - this worked for me! I managed to get it to start at login 
by creating a new item in System Tools > Session and Startup > Application 
Autostart.

How secure is this considered? I assume that I'm trusting Redshift 100%, 
because it's running in dom0. Is there any way to have this run in a 
non-trusted way? (Redshift is pretty OK for now, but there may be other 
services like this that I'd like to add later.)

[qubes-users] External VM?

Hi all,

I have a VM that I use for Calibre to read ebooks, and my library is getting 
quite large. Rather than putting the books on an external drive and connecting 
that to my Calibre VM, would it be possible to move the entire VM to an 
external drive? It doesn't need to be fast. (It's just a bunch of books.) At 
the moment, I just have all my documents on my HD, which is a bit of a waste of 
SSD. I'm only going to access these files through this VM, so it would be handy 
if I could just have them all collected together in one place.

I imagine that this feature doesn't exist today, and it may be somewhat 
complicated because of the integration with dom0. But I figure this ability may 
be useful to folks who have large VMs for specific tasks that aren't used very 
often. Is there a better way to approach this?

Looks like this was documented on this page:

But not on the fullscreen mode page. I've updated the latter.

Here's the relevant portion:

"Regardless of the settings [in /etc/qubes/guid.conf], you can always
put a window into fullscreen mode using the trusted window manager by
right-clicking on a window’s title bar and selecting 'Fullscreen'."

The new functionality should still be considered safe, since a VM
window still can't voluntarily enter fullscreen mode. The user has to
select this option from the trusted window manager in dom0.

mode. This usually happens when I press a shortcut by accident, so I'm not sure 
what the shortcut actually is. (I'm usually trying to do something else, and I 
bump the wrong key.) But, I know that I can make a window full-screen by 
right-clicking the top bar of the window and selecting Fullscreen.

How do I get out of this?

So far, my only solution has been to close the window or otherwise quit out of 
the application. Although not the end of the world, it's super annoying. [The

needs to be enabled for a VM to use it, but is this no longer the case? Is it 
enabled by default?

untrusted: Media software (vlc, etc.) as well as Chrome.

This lets me keep the individual templates to a more manageable size and 
prevents me from accidentally mixing up my workflow across VMs.

I would be open to using a more stripped-down base template but I'm not 
convinced it's worth it.
Thanks - it's really helpful to hear how others manage things. I'll give 
a similar setup a try.

[qubes-users] USB Scanner or Printer?

[Loren Rogers]

What's the recommended way to handle scanners and printers? It sounds 
like I'll need to go through a USB Qube, but I don't trust the 
closed-source drivers to run alongside my USB keyboard 
.


Will I need to assign a USB PCI device to a particular printer-scanner 
Qube and have the others go through dom0?

automatic shutdown sequence, I pressed escape and managed to take note
of a few of the messages. One of the very first ones was something about
"thermal_zone_0 critical temperature reached: 128C", which I assume is
the cause. (This isn't an exact quote, since I noted it from memory.)

This raises some questions:
- What could be causing this overheating issue in Whonix?
- Is 128C a normal temperature for the safety shutdown to kick in?
- Does Qubes have a warning / alert system for potential overheat? (Like
low battery)

Or if you push the PC does it happen also?
Have you tried limiting the threads Whonix can use?

Sometimes CPUs have shutdown at 99 degrees.
So 128 degrees is a bit high in my own opinion.

I recommend you get your HDD checked, and your RAM.

Test both thoroughly.
Could be some bad sectors.
Also run a smartd check.

Some PCs have system diagnostics built in for RAM in the startup sequence.

Thinkpads have known problem that after long time of usage GPU radiator glued to 
the chip goes loose and X201 is rather older model. Not sure how to measure GPU 
temp but if this is the case you can improve it yourself with superglue & 
silver smear or any repair shop around shall do it for a few coppers.

I think the dust removal was really helpful. I've noticed that the fan 
is working a lot less, and it's not crashing during backups like it did 
before. I'll check the HDD and RAM soon, and I'll keep the GPU radiator

[qubes-users] Warning when launching applications

I'm not sure if this is the expected behavior. When a VM is starting up, 
if I launch an application from the Applications menu, it gives me this 
error:

I also get a warning in the VM Manager. (See attached.)

I imagined that the applications would queue while the VM started up, 
then launch when it was ready. Is there a reason it doesn't work this way?

a good way to determine if it crashes or exits without updates? Is there

with a PCI device without FLR support is running

this way, the same drive can also keep appvm snapshots.
backupkeeper is just an appvm with no network access and a lot of space. the 
usb disks are setup with cryptsetup, ext4 and a backups folder owned by user. 
the first line is to get rid of old backups. qvm-copy-to-vm wont let you 
overwrite.

its no TimeMachine, and deleting and copying entire folders is inefficient. but 
does the job and easy to recover on any linux system.

would be nice to be able to initiate the file copy from dom0 and auto allow it. 
then it could run in the background.

Actually you can "auto allow it". Simply click "Yes to all" during one
backup run - it will add appropriate rule to policy to allow the same
operation (same source and target VM) in the future without asking.

Very interesting - I'll look into these as options. Out of curiosity, 
would it be possible to post your script to Gist? (To be sure I don't 
miss something.) I'd like to explore this in more detail, and it would 
be really helpful to see a working example.

What would be the costs/benefits of using VM snapshots instead of rsync? 
Would it even be possible to run an rsync script like the one above in 
dom0 that reached into the VMs? (I'm still learning the ins and outs of 
Qubes.)

The same issue occurs on my system only if I shut the system down while a VM 
with a PCI device without FLR support is running


Also, I just confirmed that it shuts down cleanly with all VMs off and 
no USB devices plugged in.

[qubes-users] Can't update dom0?

I can't seem to update dom0 using the regular updater. The system keeps 
telling me there are updates for dom0, but I can't get anything to 
actually update. Is there something I'm missing here?


Clicking the "Update VM System" button with dom0 selected seems like it 
starts, but it doesn't really go anywhere. I attached a screenshot of 
the system after it gets going. Eventually, it'll just silently crash. I 
can re-start the process, but it does the exact same thing.


I'm using R3.2 on a Thinkpad X201 Tablet.
