[RBW] Re: Wheelie on 18% grade...
Once a cop told me it was an 18% grade. So I wanted to see what it was like. People sometimes come out there and time themselves on it. Sometimes I see them with some kind of timing contraption on a tripod at the base and the cops close the road for them. First one was the 18% grade. I got up it in my 26 x gears. Would be interesting to try to wheelie it the whole way one day to see if that makes it easier than riding on two wheels (less rolling resistance?!?!?). Yeah, right! Ha ha! Second one, seemed longer but a little less steep. But still really steep. 26x gears. Stopped right before the top as mental willpower and legs were blown by that time (.need..more..willpower.). Resumed riding to top after brief standing rest. Cannot believe how weak I am despite the riding I have done the last few years. Same for the third hill. Legs were shot after that for the last miles home. Even the easy rolling terrain was hard with blown legs. I am so weak. OK, Randonneurs can stop laughing at me now. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar owner opinions and sizing recommendations
Lots of good advice has already been given, as a regular Hunq rider I will second or third the recommendation to consider PBH, height isn't a good way to go in my experience. A number of people have said to talk with Riv, that is right up there with knowing your PBH. I suspect that is the first question they will ask you - followed by a few questions about your riding. I am in between a 54 and a 58; I went up to the 58 and am happy that I did, but I ride the bike more as an all-rounder than a dedicated off road bike. That said I think Deacon sized up as well, and he rides some nice single track. Good luck - talk to Riv, you will love the Hunqapillar! BenG , The RM013 angle is very slight , about 7 degrees. When I rode them they felt like regular drops, I never once even thought about the subtle flare. At the time, I had ridden in traditional drops , mostly Cinelli 66 deep drop bars for decades. If anything , they felt like a more anatomically correct drop bar. On the hoods it felt completely normal to me . In the drops using the brake levers it felt normal .The only reason I sold them is I discovered Albatross bars ! ! [RBW] Re: Yves Gomez PBH range?
The comfort will be found in satisfactory reach and bar height Jack . PBH on these frames is secondary . 6' tall comes in all kinds. Short torso, long torso , short legs long legs. . . you get the idea. Really, you gots to know yourself and one's likings . So these things you need to know . I'm well over 6' and I myself find the front end a little too short in both TT and head tube for my liking on Riv's step thru's , for example. A 60cm. ST is fine though. Speaking of downs I did crash pretty quickly but it was a minor thing. One of the wooded sections has alot of these wooden 'bridges' over low spots in the trail and some of them have pretty darn sudden 6+ in lifts to get up on them. I hit one oddly and to slow and went over. The bike was fine and I just got a minor scrape. I kept my speed down in the new-to-me sections afterwards and was happier for it. The bike handled like a dream, I LOVE the dirt drop bars and spent nearly the whole time in the hooks section with my index finger or index/middle fingers on the brakes. I felt very well in control and much less like I was lifting the front end as I've noted when riding the same trails with a Bosco equipped MB-5 last summer. The RM13's were wide enough for good turning leverage and just narrow enough that I didn't end up whacking a bar end on a tree/limb/rock or other obstruction. the 650Bx2.25 Nobby Nic's were awesome, I was probably running them a bit higher pressure than was ideal for this kind of surface but I had excellent traction and put it to the test (at slow speeds) in some slaloming single track. The 3x8 speed configuration w/ 32T max in the back was plenty for the relatively short duration climbs I was doing and my Silver BE shifters (newly refreshed w/ Riv replacement plastic bits) worked great. I will have to remove my kickstand if these tires stay on as they tires definitely rubbed on the stand and ended up vibrating it up into the chainstay which made an unpleasant noise. Depends on how you intend to ride. I found the Sam and Clem to be pretty different bikes (both fantastic). I love my Sam more than any bike I've ever owned and can ride it as a road/club ride bike or a trail bike (with a wheelset swap). I could see setting up a Clem as a really fun trail bike, commuter, rambler, errand and town bike but I couldn't see joining a club ride on it. That didn't seem like what Clem wanted to do when I tried it out. If I could have two Riv's I'd have a Rodeo for roads and either a Hunq or Clem for trails and town. [RBW] Re: questions about buying /selling a bike on this group
You know when you register an account with Ebay, Fed Ex, UPS or even the USPS . . . .and you ship something by making and paying for the label online , the price you are paying is an ESTIMATE only ! It is by no means , set . The final price is not determined until it is delivered . The only exceptions to this are the flat One-rate boxes . So they have basically, carte blanche to charge your card whatever they see fit. I found this out by checking my Ebay fees and statements, I was being overcharged often. This means any error and I mean any ! adds on extra fees . This means dimensions, weights , addresses and everything must be spot on . This I found is nearly impossible , or should I say , an open invitation for errors to be found as some addresses are considered out of range that they do not inform you of beforehand and are subject to penalties . Once I caught on to this a confirmed it by calling all 4 companies , I found the only way to pay accurately is at genuine UPS, FedEx, USPS offices . The true rates are always at a UPS FedEx shipping depot, where the big trucks go, not authorized shippers who usually add fees unbeknownst to the shipper. Shipping to me has just gone wild , lol. Back in the day , the 70's/80's and even 90's it was all so simple , and none of these extra fees. You went to the UPS warehouse and filled out the form , they had a simple chart with the calculated fees based on zip codes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. This is a retro inspired modern bike with Reynolds steel frame, downtube shifters, long reach brakes and other Riv-ish goodies. These sold for just shy of $1,000 in the Performance catalog, then were reduced to $700 when I saw them being closed out. I noticed the bare frames on closeout at Nashbar for $400, but they are long gone now. I purchased this one at the Performance store in Chapel Hill, NC, home of Performance. It had been used in a photo shoot, then kicked around the warehouse for a couple of years until I bought it late last fall. I purchased it for a friend, being far too big for me, but his wife banned the new bike acquisition, so I'd like to get it out of my garage. Absolutely new, never ridden, with the only known issues a couple of minor scuffs in the paint and on the saddle corners from kicking around the Performance warehouse. Major features: - Reynolds 725 Cro-Moly butted steel tubing - 1 Cro-Moly steel fork with lugged crown - Beautiful blue paint, with mostly *silver* components -- extremely unusual and nice for a modern bike! - Brakes Long reach (47-57'ish mm) Dia-Compe BRS-101 - Brake Levers Tektro polished alloy - Down-tube shifters Sun-Race SLR63 (8 speed index or friction) - Silver Tange traditional headset - Crankset Fuji Alloy Forged 42/52T Chainrings - Bottom Bracket Sealed Cartridge Square Taper - Pedals Fuji Alloy Platform - Front Derailleur MicroShift FD-R52 - Rear Derailleur MicroShift RD-R44S - Cassette Sunrace, 12-25t, 8-speed - Chain KMC HG-73 - Rims Alex RDP15, Double Wall, 32-hole - Hubs Formula Alloy, Sealed Bearing 32-hole with quick release, 8-speed freehub - Tires Continental Ultra Sport, 700 X 23c - Handlebar classic bend Fuji Alloy - Stem Fuji Alloy 1 Threaded - Saddle Fuji Classic Comfort with Rivet (San Marco Regal knockoff) - Seat Post Fuji Micro-Adjust Alloy, 27.2, 300mm As I said, new, but with a few minor scuffs on paint and saddle corners. Great commute bike with braze-ons for a rack and plenty of room for chunky tires. Priced at $495 + shipping, or can be picked up in the Raleigh, NC area. I prefer to have the bike packed and shipped by an LBS, to minimize hassle and risk. I called a local shop who quoted $35 for packing, including all materials. J, When you say dirt, do you like to ride rough trails or more gravel and rolling singletrack. Do you want to run drop bars? The hunq is very heavy duty and the top tube is relatively long, depending on whether you size up or down. This can make it tough to run drop bars. Out to a local municipal park - Wakefield - where they have some great single track that goes along Accotink Creek and some swooshy trails along the cleared powerlines with some good up's and downs. The unexpected bonus of the evening was running into several groups of Whitetail Deer, mostly Bucks, some with pretty impressive (for VA) antlers. My pictures don't really do them justice but the video I uploaded does show a really pretty clearing with four of them staring me down. [RBW] Re: Fenders: Cream or Silver?
My understanding (perhaps from an old Blug post) is that Riv developed the cream Longboards to in conjunction with SKS to match their head tubes. I have a set, and already had a set of hammered Honjos that also fit my Sam. They both look nice, but I ended up fitting (with some tinkering/shortening) a set of PDW dark gray Full Metal Fenders in 700 x 45mm to match my Nitto dark gray M194 bars and Jagwire titanium gray housing (all on a blue and cream Sam). I think black anodized, hammered VOs would look awesome on orange or black Rivs, but maybe not as sweet on Blue Sams. Green Sams need silver fenders, imo. In the end, I think I've decided that cream Longboards are just too much of a good thing, but it's admittedly a personal preference. That said, I remember someone on some list pointing to a specialist center-mount 2-leg stand with much wider legs than those of the Pletscher and VO stands, that apparently was much more apt to support assymetrical rear loads -- perhaps someone knows what this is? Greetings, I was pointed to this thread from the IBob list. I haven't checked out the RBW list for some years, but good to see a lot of familiar names here. Anyway, in trying to answer Patrick's question abvove, my guess would be the Ursus centerstand. I've been using one for 4 years or so, on my porteur bike. That bike gets loaded up quite heavily at times (40 - 45lbs on the front rack, up to 130lbs or so in the trailer). The stand has had no problem in standing up to it all and is still going strong. A whiff of thread locker on the mounting bolt stopped loosening issues that cropped up every six months or so. The kickstand is mounted to a 1/8 thick plate that I brazed to the underside of the chainstays. Some Flickr links to give you an idea of the setup, https://www.flickr.com/photos/duncancycles/6251271273/in/dateposted-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/duncancycles/6251271273/in/dateposted-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/duncancycles/6251270869/in/dateposted-public/ The Ursus stand replaced a two legged Pletscher stand, which was proving to be unsatisfactory in terms of it's stability. Marked improvement, the Ursus is way more stable, and the bike no longer gets torqued over onto the ground by a heavily laden trailer. Classic RBW wheels of that era were often built around the venerable Mavic MA2. [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar owner opinions and sizing recommendations
agree with the top tube assessment importance. it's long. if you size up, youre likely ruling out drops...which may or may not be ok with how you want to set up the bike. im not in your size, but i ride a 56 sam and a 54 hunq. the hunq feels bigger and definitely is longer. i have slightly more standover on the hunqapillar, but in the scheme of things that matters very little. i just swapped albatross bars from the hunq to the sam and i feel kind of cramped on the sam, where i had room to stretch out more (and not worry about my knees hitting the bar end shifters) on the hunqapillar. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar owner opinions and sizing recommendations
I will pile on and agree with the sentiment that if 100 dudes exactly your size walked in to buy Hunqapillars, some would definitely get a 58 and some would definitely get a 62. I'm 5'11 and I absolutely should be on a 54. I've ridden it and it's awesome. I've tried standing over the 58 and it's right there. I mean, right there. But I've ridden that, too, and it is also awesome. If somebody took away all my bikes and told me I had to get by with two Hunqapillars for the rest of my life, one a 54 and the other a 58, I absolutely could do it. The bigger of the two sizes screams for Albatross or Bosco handlebars. The smaller of the two would probably be better with straight bullmoose, for MTB riding, or Noodles for a more roadish approach. Maybe a dirt drop with Noodles or flared drops could balance your road vs offroad stuff. I too found the same in regards to shipping. I now just go to my local USPS where I get an accurate cost. Apparently, UPS FedEx have add on fees that they don't add on when you calculate shipping cost through their online system. I called both carriers and the fee's were out of delivery area?? [RBW] Re: WTT New Barlow Pass for New Jack Brown Green
1. Compass/Bicycle Quarterly articles/blog state that tires will get an mm or two wider with use/time, iirc. 2. They state that rim width plays a role in how wide the tire will empuffen, 3. They also state that handling on 700c bikes degrades with any tire wider than 35mm. They believe running wider tires is best on a 650b bike because they keep their nimble handling with wider tires. They say that the reason they do make wider than 700 x 35mm tires is to help 700c-ers get to experience the cush of wider tires. But they believe handling degrades at anything wider than 35mm on a 700c wheeled bike. Unless Compass/BQ has changed their position since I last read. 4. I think their stated tire measurements could only be made clearer by including the name/width of the rim it was measured on, as well as how much they were initially empuffed for the initial measurement (psi/bar) used to list in their tire description, and a disclaimer to educate the consumer that real life width will be determined by rim width, tire pressure, and time/use. Empuffery is definitely more complex than first meets the eye. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar owner opinions and sizing recommendations
I'm 6.2 with a pbh of 95 to 96 as measured by my wife while I hauled up hard! My Hunqapillar is a 62 cm with 48 cm Noodles.I have 50 mm Schwalbe Marathons on. I came from a 62 cm Trek 5000 road bike to Hunqapillar. My old saddle height was 83.7 cm, right now I don't really know, just at a nice comfy place that gives me plenty of power and no pain. I have lots of saddle height adjustment to go on, both up and down. At the moment my Noodles are as high as possible, which means I can use the drops in all downhills and on rough gravel or soft dirt roads. I can also stay comfortable in the drops for a long time. The Hunqapillar has so much adjustments available and so many possible choices for handlebars, pedals and tires that you can adjust into whatever position you enjoy. Personally I feel no need to listen to anybody else than my body when it comes to angles and measurements, and I do change them when I feel like it. I have long arms, but a relatively short torso, you should check yours to help you choose handlebars. Being 6.2 or 6.0 really doesn't mean anything. Some people have long necks and tall heads, others have a round head posted straight on the shoulders like me. No impact for your choice of bike. I guess the message to you is to check that pbh, call Rivendell and feel safe that you will get a bike that fits. [RBW] Re: Double leg Kickstands... lets talk
Upon visual inspection of my 2012 Sam Hillborne and my wife's 2012 Betty Foy, both Taiwanese built, both appear to have the unstout plate. Not a term I ever thought would ever be associated with anything Rivendell. Before removing my single legged kickstand, I experimented this week and pretended it wasn't there. What I found is that kickstands are very very convenient. It'll take a little getting use to, especially loading and unloading, but the worse was on the two occasions I took my bike into a business. Neither of these places mind me bringing the bike inside but they prefer I leave the bike at Customer Service and not wheel it around the store. On both occasions I deployed the kickstand because I felt bad leaning it up against their counter, wall, display etc. and possibly damaging something. Funny thing is I've been riding bikes my whole life and other than briefly decades ago never had a kickstand. Now I'm not sure I can live without it. My Father-in-law had that kinda kickstand back in China. I don't think I'd like the weight of that kstand either. China's got great ideas for baby seats and umbrella holders, too. But in Canton China, seems like people are just cruising to work/school. Nobody cares about average speeds and I don't think there are many, if any, hills to climb in Guangzhou, China!!! They don't like helmets, either!! Too hot!!! Everything over there is pure function. They even ride their bikes when they are soo rusted!! You couldn't go fast if you tried in Canton - too crowded and no one seems to observe any kind of right-of-way or traffic laws, except the cars who have to stop at red lights. No one has to worry about parts failing on 30+ mile descents, like we do here in the States. They are cruising flat in crowded traffic at 10mph with bike shops on every corner, so to speak! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: WTT New Barlow Pass for New Jack Brown Green
I think that what BQ/Compass in fact claims is that the gyroscopic factors determined by tire diameter and width and of course weight at the given distance from the axle result in the best handling when the perimeter of the wheel is about 13.5 from the axle. They don't to my knowledge use the word degrade, which I think conveys a misapprehension. As to their precise claim, as above, I am skeptical, since Grant at least seems in my experience (3 26 wheel custom roads) to have devised a way to make very light, 24.5 to 25 actual diameter wheels behave superbly; and while my Fargo with 700C C 50 to 65 mm wheels doesn't handle nearly as nicely, I put that down to the mtb-type geometry, at least in good part, and not solely to the size of the wheels. On Fri, Aug 21, 2015 at 4:04 PM, Lungimsam john11.2...@gmail.com wrote: 3. They also state that handling on 700c bikes degrades with any tire wider than 35mm. But they believe handling degrades at anything wider than 35mm on a 700c wheeled bike. Unless Compass/BQ has changed their position since I last read. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar owner opinions and sizing recommendations
Remember the Riv frames are measured center to top . So a 60 c-c frame is really about 61.4 assuming 28.4mm top tubes . I'd base my decision on the bars I'll be using, the bar height, and top tube length . Front-center too. I make no compromise when it comes to these , I have a minimum and it's not negotiable. Standover height is really not that important . I ride a 60cm Bombadil and I have a pbh of 91.6 or so . PBH is longer than your pant inseam , and pant inseam is wholly arbitrary anyways . PBH is literally , pubic BONE to the floor . It is measured firmly against the bone , yes, ouch , but it is at least binding . In pants I can wear inseams from 32-35 inches , as fit depends on firstmost, personal preference for what a fit is ! You've got low rise, high rise, gussets no gussets , infinite kinds of gussets and design patterns , there just is no standard to a garment ! Certainly doable. I am 12 years in my experiment going carless. Cannot see myself ever getting one. The first two years after selling my Miata (hard to do!) For Chicago bike only I've found a low trail porteur style bike with a nice big bag atop the big front rack works best. I put my brief case and business jacket commuting to work. Easily fits groceries and most other purchases. Chicago has decent mass transit which I use from time to time. I think bike only would still work in a city that did not have as many transit options. Re: [RBW] Re: Wheelie on 18% grade...
Long ago, age about 15 (end of 9th grade), in a fit of gratuitous tinkerishness, I decided to turn my little brother's 24 wheel miniature Hero into something I (5'10) could ride. This was before I scavenged the front wheel for my first complete bike build in 10th grade. I found some sort of pipe to replace the tiny seatpost; this was so long it put the saddle, a Brooks clone, over the rear axle. To support my weight (125 lb), I rigged metal struts, from a wheelbarrow, between saddle clamp bolts and axle. The cottered crank had a ring of about 30 t and the fw was about 18 -- it was wy below 50. Anyway, I rode it the 7 miles or so from our house at the south end of Rosslyn to the Nairobi International School, though square miles of coffee and wonderful wooded valleys. The penultimate approach to the 1 mile long dirt road accessing the school was a 1/2 mile, steepish hill. With a 40 gear, handlebar near my ankles, and saddle south of the rear axle, every little bit of torque on the pedals had me fighting to keep from going over backward. Good times, of a sort. The bike was abandoned on campus (at the huge, dark, grim bamboo cluster in the main drive) until The Great Pot Bust of spring, 1970 when I and it were hauled off back home by irate parents. Gad, my daughter just entered 9th grade. I'm very glad that she is a far, far more reliable child than I was. On Fri, Aug 21, 2015 at 5:55 PM, Garth garth...@gmail.com wrote: Ride it ! Ride that wheelie ! Alright . . . . . shift your weight forward . On really steep stuff , it's almost like I'm standing out of the saddle , but my butt is still in contact with the saddle, just less so . On drop bars on the hoods , on my Alba bars I'm forward near the curve . [RBW] Re: Wheelie on 18% grade...
Personally, walking would be my best option. Kudos if you can ride up anything that steep. dougP On Friday, August 21, 2015 at 4:29:29 PM UTC-7, Lungimsam wrote: So I rode my first 18% grade today and found myself poppin' a wheelie by accident.
