Sam. The riding you just described is what the Sam is made for. AHH is more
a zippy road bike designed for dirt roads too. Could you do all you
describe on either? Yup. However, if both were available and price was no
object, you'd still want the Sam for the riding you describe. Added bonus:
it's available and costs less.

2017-08-11 Thread Michael Morrissey
Chris:

Thanks for watching my YouTube video. Get the Appaloosa. The Hunq and the
Appaloosa are very similar.

My Appaloosa and Trek 830 are pretty similar too. The biggest difference is
fork. My Trek has an ordinary fork - the OG fork was bent. The Appaloosa's
slender fork makes for a better ride. Also the bottom bracket drop (78mm on
Appaloosa) makes for a better handling ride. The Riv is way lighter than the
Trek.

The best analogy I can think of is that the old Trek 830 is like finding a
stylish suit at the thrift store, one that looks really cool and feels good,
but the Appaloosa is like getting a new suit tailored to fit you, and it looks
cool, feels good, and fits amazing.

I just changed the bars on the Appaloosa to the Riv Bullmoose. Third set of
bars and still tinkering.

Good guesses but wrong!

It's Astoria Park and the local bike shop is Nomad Cycles. I like 718c a lot

2017-08-11 Thread Ryan Fleming
late to the party but in a fairly recent blug Dave mantioned that Atlanti,
Hunqs ,and HH's wait times were almost longer than customs. I suspect the
fact that True Temper is no longer manufacturing frame tubing is a
contributing factor and Riv/Waterford is sourcing frame tubing
elsewhere...offhand I can't think of another US frame tube manufacturer,
but someone on this list may know otherwise

I guess if you want something you gotta jump on it

A. Homer Hilsen, Atlantis, Hunqapillar

Due to raw materials shortage and painfully long lead times we have to
announce 8-month waits on these. That’s longer than customs, but hopefully
will speed up soon.

[RBW] Mustache/ Albastache on a clem

2017-08-11 Thread Joe Bernard
I think I could've done it on the 45cm Clem H I had because I was at the top
end of height for it (it was too cramped with Albas), but no way on my 52 Clem
L. I would need a comically short stem which would undoubtedly screw up the
steering.

You may run into a reach issue as both stache bars have little reach back
themselves just like a drop bar. Depends on your flexibility and
fit/position preference. which no one can do for you or tell you what it
would be like since there is only one you.

Myself I'd use these because the pad is thicker and then just replace the
pad . http://www.koolstop.com/english/v_type2holder.html

instead of these http://www.koolstop.com/english/thinline.html

All pads http://www.koolstop.com/english/rim_pads.html

Compare dimensions too, like "pad contact width". Measure your current ones
to see what the difference is if any.

It is a neat frame and an interesting part of Rivendell custom history. My
issue is that it is not better in any way than a Joe Starck, Curt Goodrich
or Mark Nobilette built custom. It is not a Sachs, I would bet the
geometry is completely GP, but it's about double the going rate because RS
built it. Super cool for the right buyer, I guess...

2017-08-11 Thread adam leibow
Paul, I would go with the Atlas rims. They *might* be overkill, but they
aren't crazy heavy or anything, just good, confidence-inspiring, rim-brake
mountain touring rims. I have a set of A23's on my cross bike and I wish
they were wider. My friend destroyed a pair of A23's, just be better safe
than sorry. The wider rim is better for a wider tire, anyways.

[RBW] Re: FS: 58cm Rosco Road

2017-08-11 Thread Bill Lindsay
Yep it's a super versatile bike for somebody with the will to take
advantage of the versatility. It's a Quickbeam if you build it like a
Quickbeam. It's a Monster Crosser if you build it like a Monster Cross.
It's a road bike if you build it like a road bike. It's a Hilsen/Country
Bike if you go that way. It's even an Atlantis/loaded touring bike, if
that's what you want to do with it. Unlike all of the above it's a
carry-bike. Anybody who takes their bikes up and down lots of stairs every
day in their normal daily life will lament how they've been doing it wrong
all their lives with no liftatube.

I already have one, and I'm thinking about buying yours so I can stash one
at a vacation spot. It's like stashing six bikes in one garage, again, if
you have the will to take advantage of all that flexibility. Many people
are better served with lots of specific bikes, rather than one versatile
bike.

I'm just happy my sharing the listing has generated a LOT of discussion!
In case you all are wondering, there is at least ONE person who might fit

I am about 5'9", ride a 55 Hillborne daily, and also have a "vintage" 54cm

[RBW] Re: How do you guys do it, buying a bike sight unseen

2017-08-11 Thread Jon BALER
I have bought all my recent bikes (15?) without a test ride. The LBS
typically don't carry the XL sizes, and most models that I seek are sold as
a frame only. I think part selection is more critical, and I can always
change those.

I have a pretty good idea what I want, pick relatively simple bikes, and am
not terribly picky over what makes a good bike.

If I was between a medium and large, and buying an uber-fancy, full
suspension mountain bike, then it would be a different story.

[RBW] WTB/WTT - Parts for MTBubbe Build, and a wheels question

2017-08-11 Thread Paul Clifton
I'm one of the folks anxiously anticipating the arrival of an MTBubbe
frame. Long time Rivbike listener, first time Rivbike owner here.

*Wheels* - Has anyone used the Velocity built Atlas wheels offered by Riv?
They seem like a really good option for a very reasonable price, but Atlas
rims may be overkill for me. Any thoughts? The A23s seem narrow but are
probably plenty strong. I'd try Pacenti Brevets or Forza's.

Any suggestions for wide rim brake 650b rims that are between A23 and
Atlas? What about a source for an A23 wheelset with a dynamo?

I'm going to call a few shops today and see what I can get locally.

*WTB*
For the bike, I've got a pretty solid bar ends and Albatross build planned,
but I need some parts to finish it off. I can buy a lot of this stuff new,
but I thought someone on the list might be interested in selling me some
used parts:

   - Front and rear deraillers - Deore or similiar (8 or 9 speed)
  - I'm also interested in a more road oriented set. I can pull the
Deore's off my Boulder, but I'd want the RD to clear a 32.
  - V brakes and levers - Deore, XT, or Avid, or others
   - 24 tooth chainring (74 bcd, pretty sure, and chainring bolts)
   - Seatpost - 26.8 (two bolts if I'm lucky)
   - Wheelset - 650b
   - Tires - 650b between 42 and 50 mm wide. Not picky at the moment, but
definitely not any super light things that get punctured by glass and
thorns and wires. My neighborhood is not well-kept.

I just prefer used parts if I can get them, so let me know what you're
trying to get rid of.

Maybe I'll get lucky at the co-op...

*Crankset For Trade*

Shimano Deore XT FC-M730 with 175mm arms. I'd like to trade for something
with similar looking arms (Sugino maybe) with 172.5 length. The crank is
WELL USED (lots of scuffs and scratches) so I'll don't be shy about your
offers. If there's no takers, I'll just ride 175s.

I had a bunch of this stuff in my bin, but I've been building bikes for
friends and family all spring and summer, and it's kinda wiped me out. For
example, two old cranksets and all my spare chainrings and a bunch of old
shimano deraillers are now being ridden! So now I have to rebuild my stash.
So I'm not picky. I just want to get my new bike rolling!

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Tires, revisited.

2017-08-11 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Jay. So, on my 27/35 mm Blunts, they should measure their full 44
mm -- that's 7 mm less than the F Freds. But the additional suppleness
(tho' the F Freds weigh between the 2 SP models) might make up for that.

Sheesh, something else to spend money on ...

Patrick, I've been running Snoqualmie Pass tires on both my Joe and my Sam.
They run 42mm on DT Swiss TK540 rims and 43mm on Mavic A719s. Both rims have an
internal width of 19mm, I believe, and the difference may be nothing more than
the time the tires have been on the rims. I've had them on the Sam for a

Re: [RBW] Re: Tires, revisited.

2017-08-11 Thread Patrick Moore
Yes indeed to Orange Seal. I've blathered about it enough, but it makes
possible the use of "fragile" tires that otherwise would be impossible due
to flats; be it put in tubes (at least, above 30-35 psi; it wouldn't work
for me in tubes at 20 or so) or of course tubeless.

Oh, and Patrick: what pressures do you find best for the Snoqualmie Passes
for your combination of pavement and rough stuff? (I find ~23/26 good for
the 50 mm F Freds here, but might go to 25-6/28-30 for rockier and rootier
terrain.

Finding a plush do everything tire is a challenge. Based on what is on the
market today I would have an easier time in a smaller wheel size than 700c. The
balance between volume v. weight and road v. trail will depend on you and the
riding you do.

This has been a fascinating summer, riding Compass’ Snoqualmie 44mm el tires
instead of my Schwalbe 2.1” Racing Ralph performance (no flat protection)
tires. I just switched from the Snoqualmies to the Racing Ralphs yesterday
because I shredded the rear Snoqualmie. Trail crews churned up the MUP that
connects me to the back road that connects me to Woodland Park. Detrious
accumulates on the MUP from Highway 24 right next door and up hill. Normally
not a big deal as it either gets pushed off the path or dug in under the path
with time. But fresh churned areas? PBft! Two flats in two two
days. More than I’ve ever had except when they churn up the MUP each year. I
should avoid it for a week or two. But I can’t. It’s the one way I can take to
get to Woodland Park and other rides. So, I’d rather ride my $20 a tire (I got
them on sale) Racing Ralphs than my $80 a tire Snoqualmie. Can’t blame the
tire, but I also know the RR’s are more likely to survive a hit than the
Snoqualmies. Yesterday's ride on the same road and trails gave me another
direct comparison between the two, this time with two months riding experience
on the Snoqualmies and a year on the Racing Ralphs.

In plushness, they are nearly identical, for the Racing Ralph makes up in
volume the bit it’s short in sidewall suppleness. What does nearly mean? The
RRs handle rocks and roots and wash board better but the general feel is equal.

Handling: again, the strengths and weaknesses nearly balance out here, at least
in dry(ish) conditions. Snoqualmies are fleet and smooth. Fast and easy
climbing and surprisingly grippy, they track a smoother line (I’m unsure why
this is). RR’s do not require underbiking on trails. This makes for a smoother
ride on descents, but they require more effort to climb because of the 29er big
tire inertia law of physics.

The “cross” tire between these two, and the one I may go to next year as my
summer tire is the Thunder Burt. I just nee to find a sale on the “no
protection” version because the other versions are not supple enough for this
"princess and the pea.” Grin.

Conclusion: I love the Compass Snoqualmie and wish there was a higher volume
option available for those of us riding all terrains with 700c. Yet the overall
“price” I pay shifting to the Racing Ralphs is small, and I gain a lot of
confidence in wet and/or loose surface conditions. Next year, if I shift to a
summer tire, it will likely be the Thunder Burt.

With abandon,
Patrick
