2020-06-02 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
I appreciate the honesty of your feedback.

It may have been absolutely the wrong move. We are all decidedly imperfect.

My decision was related more to the tone of the responses (both public and
moderated) which seemed to be quickly going off-course. it seemed to be
boiling up, which is happening quite a bit of late.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Surly Rack and Brooks B17 Special

2020-06-02 Thread George Schick
The B17 'S' *is* a wider saddle, depending on how you look at it. The 'S'
stands for short; it has that longer nose of the standard saddle chopped
off so that the rider sits mostly on the wide part. Here's a link:
 https://www.brooksengland.com/en_us/saddles/b17-short.html But it's up to
you.

The post is still at internet-bob (locked to replies) and 650B and Mr. Heine's

done a significant amount of opining in those places myself. I'm not going to
do so here for the reasons Jim stated, and I don't think it's necessary to give
him grief about moderating his forum. It's not Riv's forum or yours or mine,
it's Jim's.

[RBW] Re: Center pull/Herse Brake Help

2020-06-02 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Hi Everyone!

Thanks for weighing in and providing additional ideas.

So I tried the wheel swap and I got squealless, but squeal nonetheless

Next I tried some run of the mill Jagwire black brake padsno squeal.
Nothing. Not a peep.

So I guess my stubbornness got the best of me. I just never thought a pad
swap would do it considering I have the same pads/rim up front. c'est la
vie

BTW @ Nate they are Velocity Dyads

I don't want to pile on the responsiveness of RH because of the time we are
ineveryone gets a pass right now.

Stopping power wise they are among the most powerful rim brake I've
experienced. They are the most beautiful brake around and they have
clearance for days.

Set up IMO is cantankerous, unless you do a lot of them perhaps? One thing
in particular that drove me nuts was the fact that the pinch bolt for the
hanger is 7mm and you need front and back, the pinch bolt on the arm is 9mm
and you need front and back and the brake pad nut is 10mm. That's a lot of
dang wrenches to fiddle with!

I'm a little burnt on these right now so I'll probably just ride those
Jagwire pads until they need changing. I'll try the black mafac pads
somewhere down the line.

PS Here's some Bonus Info on the RH cantis. I will save someone the
headache if they aren't direction readers like me. They require a
particular post that is slightly recessed in the end. That's because the
RH bolts have a small shoulder where the threads transition to the bolt
head (For "strength"). If you tighten them down on the wrong style brake
post and fail to read the directionscongratulations! You now have a
brake for life because the last ~1mm of post has mushroomed around that
shoulder trapping the brake arm on. Ask me how I know 

[RBW] Re: Pedals

2020-06-02 Thread Lynn Haas
SPDs here, usually M520s, although right now I have some dual-sided ones
because I had romantic visions of hopping on my bike to run short errands
in sneakers. Turns out, I rarely run short errands via bike and switching
shoes is not a problem. The flat side of the pedal is further down than the
SPD side and makes me hyperextend my leg. I also rarely wear sneakers but
that's another story.

I have a gimpy hip and the clipless pedals keep my leg from flopping
around. We have lots of bikes with flat pedals at work, and I've learned
the hard way to stay off of them if I want to be able to walk the next day.
I'm glad (but also sad) to hear that other people ride clipless for the
same reason.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Surly Rack and Brooks B17 Special

2020-06-02 Thread Joe Bernard
I think what can work as a 'very upright' Brooks is mostly down to each
person's anatomy, and somewhat which particular example of leather your saddle
happened to come with. I also ride quite upright due to hand issues and find
most B17s perfect for this, OTOH I have one new B17 Standard on my Brompton
that seems determined to kill me. OTO-OTHER-H the B67/68 shape Leah's using to
some success has never worked for me at all.

[RBW] On Topic / Off Topic

2020-06-02 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
The topic of this group has always been narrowly defined by design.

Over the...what...13 years (the old rbw list migrated here to google groups
in March of 2007) in which I've moderated the group, I've taken down all
manner of threads which were off topic and got weirdly nasty.

Mostly they were about SUV's or bait versus fly fishing, sometimes about
helmets. Innocuous topics that suddenly lurched sideways. Good people
saying hurtful things for little reason other than getting caught up in the
call and response of the internet. I usually manage to get the nasty
threads deleted, but sometimes run out of energy and time before I can get
rid of others which are kind of on the bubble. That's not the same as tacit
approval.

Before the COVID situation had developed into even a quarter of what it is
now, we had an exceptionally nasty thread which expanded here. Caused folks
to post some very angry things and leave.

The current demonstrations and responses and actions are playing out on a
scale I don't feel we can ever hope to cover in this group. In the short
time following the original post, I deleted responses in the the moderation
queue which had already crossed the line of civil discourse. Not to mention
the growing debate simply about whether or not the post was on or off
topic.

There are plenty of places online to have those conversations.

I do understand the anger and the pain and frustration going on right now.
But there are much more appropriate venues to directly apply yourself to
begin to address these issues in our culture than talking (or arguing)
about them here.

Thank you to those of you who contacted me directly - some of you were
concerned about the growing adversarial tone of comments, others the
non-RBW content of the post. Others have asked directly why the thread was
deleted. I hope this gives some insight to the decision.

I guess I come back to the idea: the topic of this group has always been
narrowly defined by design at the beginning.

Stay safe and act fairly.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Surly Rack and Brooks B17 Special

2020-06-02 Thread Leah Peterson
George,

The same saddle in Select (a B17 with organic, undyed leather and copper
rivets) seems to work fine - I don’t now why this Special is so troublesome.
Would I prefer a wider Brooks?

Youbetcha.

But Brooks DC’d the wider B68 so it’s this or the stupid sprung B67. Heavy,
creaky, and apparently useless to me since I don’t make the 175 lb weight
requirement to activate the springs. Also, no copper rivets! Where are the
redeeming qualities?

2020-06-02 Thread George Schick
I'm kind of surprised that Leah would even attempt to use something like a
Brooks (Champion) Special saddle when she seems to prefer an upright riding
position such as some of the current Riv models she favors support. I
currently use such a saddle on one of my road bikes, but I like it because
I ride with road bars and my body is more or less at a 45 degree angle with
respect to the frame/bars. Currently, I myself am attempting to "break in"
a Brooks B-17 "narrow" and after 300-400 miles it's still not comfortable.
But such is life with road bars and saddles.

[RBW] two rivendells for sale

2020-06-02 Thread Robert Blunt
Hello everyone,
With the pandemic induced economic downturn, I will have to let my bikes
go. I have a 55 cheviot that is literally brand new with less than ten
miles on it and includes the following build details:
Sugino xd2 cranks (26,36,48 I think), ahearne map bars, brooks leather
grips, nitto technomic stem, shimano brake levers, simworks potluck rack,
nitto seatpost, brooks sprung saddle, simworks hammered fenders, deore rear
derailleur, vintage campagnolo mtb front derailleur, paul thumbies, shimano
ultegra bar end shifters, grip king peddles, and tektro r559 brakes. The
wheelset is a generic 650b set I got off ebay and the tires are compass
babyshoe pass and are 650B x 42mm. I am asking $2000 plus shipping.

The craigslist listing for the cheviot is done but shoppok still has it
posted so you can see one image here:
https://www.shoppok.com/southjersey/a,28,230029,Rivendell-cheviot2200--Pennington-.htm
.

I would be happy to send additional photos to anyone who might be
interested. I am not very good with technology so I don't know how to
reduce photos to attach for the purposes of the group

I also have a 51cm Sam Hillborne, the black and creme one with canti
brakes. There is a small scuff on the top tube which was there when I
bought it from a list member otherwise the frame was new. The bike also has
fewer than ten miles on it. Build details
Sugino XD2 cranks (26, 36, 48), Nitto noodle bars (46cm), Nitto technomic
stem, shimano ultegra bar end shifters (9 peed), tektro brake levers and XC
interrupter levers as well. The wheel set is very nice: The front wheel has
a son28 front dynohub laced to a Pacenti Brevet 650B rim, and the rear
wheel consists of a White Industries MI5 laced to another Pacenti Brevet
rim (wheels are brand new). The dynohub powers a Schmidt Edelux light
mounted to the front rack. Tires are black Panaracer Gravel Kings. Nitto
front rack, and Nitto campee rack on the back. Old used small Sackville
trunk sack is on the front. Altus rear derailleur. IRD front derailleur.
The front brake is a Paul canti and the rear is a diacompe canti, tektro
brake levers. The seat post is a vintage Sakae SR MTE-100 which can adjust
horizontally pretty widely (basically the same design as IRD Wayback seat
post) . The saddle is a nicely broken in Brooks B-17. Burgundy cotton bar
tape, black Velo Orange fenders. Two leg touring kickstand. Grip King
pedals. I think that is everything. The bike has less than ten miles on it
also. I am asking 2800, plus shipping.

Again, I am happy to send photos to anyone who asks. Although not RIvy and
off topic, I am also selling a 2019 Trek Carbon Checkpoint with 105
component group, and an older Bike Friday Tandem. Thanks for your
consideration and please ask questions.
Best,
Robert Blunt
Pennington, NJ

[RBW] WTB: Bar-con-able Upright Handlebar

2020-06-02 Thread Jake Watters
Hello looking for an upright handlebar that will accept bar end shifters if
you have something kicking around. Could be Nitto or VO or Wald or
whatever, no specific desires as of now, but a slight preference towards a
MTB sized brake lever clamp diameter. Prefer pick-up in SF Bay Area, but
could pay for shipping also.

I haven't tried too many different pedals, but I've settled on a few:

   - If I'm going to get clipped in, and don't expect to be walking much, I
use Time Impact or RXS pedals. I used to use Speedplay X series pedals, but
a friend gave me a set of then top-of-the-line Impact Mg-Ti pedals, and I
prefer their modest amounts of both lateral and rotational float. In
addition, the cleats are fairly walkable (for a road cleat), are fairly
inexpensive, and last quite a while. Having good experience with the Impact
pedals, I bought the successor RXS pedals to try out (Impacts were
discontinued then), and was pleasantly surprised that they feel similar to
the Impacts. I also found out that newer Impact cleats can even be used on
   RXS pedals, which is nice.
   - If I'm going to get clipped in, and suspect that there may be a bit of
hike-a-bike, I use Shimano SPD pedals (mostly XTR) with the multi-release
cleat. The best review I can give them is I don't worry about them.
   - For my pedaling-free pedals, I have a mix of MKS RMX and Rivendell's
el-cheapo Clem Smith pedals. I tried other MKS offerings including the
"Grip King", but didn't like them. My feet prefer the wide, squarish,
somewhat concave platforms. I would have preferred the roller/ball bearing
setup of the Time pedals on these platform pedals, but I appreciate these
are just optimizations that feed the geek/nerd mind more than actually
   making real-world differences.
   - I still have a few Shimano "dual platform" PD-A530 pedals, but I found
that they're not easy to flip to the correct side when starting off. I've
since transitioned to full platforms for commuting and/or utility riding,
so they are essentially abandoned now.

The common theme I found with all these pedals is that they are reliable,
and dependable. I seldom have to think about them, although I always
lube+adjust new MKS pedals before putting them into service. For the
clipless pedals, the cleats' failure mode is gradual, which gives me plenty
of warning, contributes to them being dependable. Of course, Shimano
multi-release and Time Impact/RXS cleats are still easily available.

our terrain is closely matched. We have very few public forestry roads

Minimum clearances to the Rosé is about 5mm to the rear stay bridge and 4mm

it's no concern!

[RBW] Jan's post

2020-06-02 Thread j.schwartz
It appears that Jan's post was taken down. Either he took it down himself
or the moderator did.

For those of you that missed it , Jan is offering to pass on the revenue
from Bicycle Quarterly subscriptions to Black Lives Matter
LINK HERE

If his original post was taken down by anyone other than Jan, I find this
deeply disturbing.

There are currently active posts on this RBW Owners Bunch google group
related to fly fishing rods, "wrenching for the homeless" , Nikon cameras
and someone seeing advice on a recumbent bike for their dad

None of those are really in line with what this group is supposed to
discuss.

Jan is offering a magazine that most, if not all, members would be
interested in and letting the group know that currently he's donating those
funds to an organization.Grant has done similar promotions to inspire
his customer base to buy items that would benefit a cause.

If the cause Jan is supporting doesn't appeal to you, then don't buy the
magazines. But, if this group can't handle the content of Jans' post or
is somehow offended by the prospect of supporting Black Lives Matter, then
that is a sad reflection on the nature of this online community.

I suspect this group is comprised of *mostly* older white men. That is
important to keep in check when analyzing why this post may have been
removed.
I would like to know why it is gone.
I do hope Jan removed it himself.

[RBW] WTB: Clem H or L 52

2020-06-02 Thread Doug Hansford
I'll try again even though these are hard to find. I'm wanting a frame but
will take a complete bike. I plan to buy the upcoming Platypus but since
that won't be until years end I would like a frame to build up. If you have
a Clem H, or Clem L in 52 and are looking to sell, let me know. Would also
consider aCheviot, Atlantis or Rosco Bubbe. I'm really just itching to
build a bike up.

Hi Taz,
We likely raced the same tracks. I raced during 1979 and 80 a few times
each year. I always raced beginner class and was never a serious racer for
sure. A buddy of mine raced expert and took home lots of trophies. What

Re: [RBW] Re: Locking Up your Riv

2020-06-02 Thread Jay Lonner
I have one of these. The Achilles’ heel is the very narrow portion of the key
at its end. There’s not a lot of material there, and I managed to torque it
right off, leaving the tip in the lock. A locksmith was able to retrieve this
fragment, but I haven’t used this lock since, reverting to the Abus cable lock
that Riv is carrying again.

While I live in a high bike theft area (per my LBS) I suspect that the Riv-ness
of my Hunq (diagatube, fenders, racks/basket, saddlebag, “obsolete” mechanical
systems like rim brakes and friction shifting) help it hide in plain sight - by
contemporary standards there’s nothing to attract the attention of the sort of
professional bike thieves that can defeat pretty much any lock.

Re: [RBW] Pedals

2020-06-02 Thread Patrick Moore
All SPDs at this point, though I've tried too many kinds to count. XTs
or XTRs on the commuter and dirt road bike, Dura Ace SPDs on the
gofast.

I actually like clips 'n' straps 'n' slotted cleats, particularly with
the wonderfully well made MKS RX-1 pedals and their anniversary UBS
Lite (MKS has some very weird nomenclature; I had a pair of cheap but
very nice "Esprit" pedals) but since I ride even the gofast on the
occasional dirt road, the SPDs work better. I found that entry and
exit was considerably easier with slotted cleats and sem-tight straps
than with KEOs.

I find I need retention since I pull my foot off the pedal (or out of
the shoe back when I wore slip-ons and clips / straps).

I recall the early days of clipless pedals, when all sorts of new
designs were being tried -- Grafton, Sampson are 2 I used; that weird
one that consisted of a spindle with bearings and roller over the
spindle, and "claw" cleats to grip the roller. Lightest pedal on
market, though.

Patrick Moore, who is also on a second pair of very retro, 1980s
Shimano SPD shoes (thanks again to the donor!) -- most comfortable
I've worn.

[RBW] Re: Pedals

2020-06-02 Thread Steve Cole
Doug,

As on so many things, I'm of two minds. I want to be able to jump on my
bike and run some errands without worrying about what shoes I'm wearing. I
find, however, for longer planned pleasure rides being clipped in gives me
a sense of security. I would also add that living in an urban area, SPDs
allow me to not worry about starting up from a stop. I simply don't need
to make certain the pedal is in a specific location, e.g., 10 a.m..

My answer has been to equip my bikes with pedals that give me the options I
want, one side SPD, the other flat. My favorite, although not cheap, is
the Shimano XT PD-T8000. Unlike every other pedal I've used, when I
unclip, they rotate to vertical and allow me to easily switch to flats,
which I do when I'm stopping, or continue with the SPDs. Good luck on you
search.

This is amazing!! Biking and paddling are my two favorite activities, and
I've often joked about how to possibly combine the two. Now I know it is
indeed possible!

Doug - what class did you race and how long?

I raced in Griffin, Powder Springs and Peachtree City in 1980 and '81. 16
and up beginner, then 16/over novice for me. Mostly rode a Mongoose but
had a Redline towards the latter days.

[RBW] Re: Center pull/Herse Brake Help

2020-06-02 Thread James McKinley
I ordered those brakes on a custom build. The builder told me when I took
possession that he had had poor or no response from Heine on problems with
brake squeal. He ended up putting Kool Stop pads on the brakes. They've
worked well for me, with occasional scuffing of the surface during
maintenance chores. Contrary to sales statements from RH, I haven't found
them to be superior to the cantilever brakes I have on a very similar bike;
there's a bit of squishy feel to them. IMO they weren't worth the extra
cost.

[RBW] FS: Compass RTP tires, Ergon Grips

2020-06-02 Thread Sam Crowe
For sale is a pair of Rene Herse/Compass Rat Trap Pass tires, 26 x 2.3,
standard casing. The tires have roughly thirty miles on them. They are in
excellent condition. I am asking $100 shipped, or local pickup in Plumas County
CA for $90.

I also have a pair of used Ergon GA-3 grips, size small, I am selling for $20
shipped. I bought them in February, and the noticeable wear is some scuff marks
on the bar end plugs.

$110 for both the tires and the grips.

I will make sure to give both items a cleaning before shipment.

Also, if you are interested I will throw in a free, old school park tool ccp-4
cottered crank puller tool. Oh the memories!

Thanks!

You’ve tried pretty much everything I can think of. You didn’t mention the rim
model. There sometimes seems to be incompatibility between rim and brake pad
material. I assume you’re running the salmon Kool Stop pads. How about trying
the black compound, which has a little less friction?

A second for the Granit X Plus. I live in Washington DC and use it along

heavy-ish, but I'm not racing.

I also have an Otto Lock for my racy bike when I lock it up for a few
minutes. I could see using the 3 foot Otto on a front wheel and the Granit
X on the rear and dispense with the axle locks.

I’ll get to the sunglasses part, but first just let me say all the
words I need to get out.

Lately I’ve been shuffling over the practical side. I would love to
have beauty and utility both present, but sometimes it doesn’t work out.
The summer months have come to Vegas and as I have greatly increased my
miles in 2020 (in May alone I rode 310.4 miles!), I have had to make some
changes to withstand the sun. I’m not riding in Lycra, but I do have
synthetic, white arm sleeves that keep you cool, covered, and shielded from
the sun. I’ve taken to wetting and tying a bandana around my neck and
wearing riding gloves on my hands. I apply a nasty white mineral sunscreen
at times, but I never leave without sunglasses.

A few days ago I went out for an evening ride. It was dark enough that
I took off my sunglasses and was soon after hit in the eyes several times
by bugs. That was annoying but workable until the final one, which managed
to get IN my eye and then repeatedly bite or sting. Oh my gosh, the pain. I
pulled over but I was using the stripped down Clem H (my Clementine is in
the shop getting dyno lighting, another thing I needed with all this extra
riding) and it has no mirror. The bathrooms at the park were locked, so I
had nothing but my phone camera to use and try and fish this bug - which
was still ferociously stinging me - out of my eye. It must have died
because the pain stopped, but I never did find the bug carcass. 濫 I was
pretty sure all that biting/stinging was going to leave me with swelling.
Was I going to have to ride home after dark, up the mountain with one eye
swollen shut? (Spoiler alert: I made it home with 2 good eyes.)

Well that was when I decided I wanted clear riding glasses for night. I
ordered Tifosi from Amazon but was really disappointed. They slid down and
didn’t offer good eye coverage. I ended up on Oakley’s site, which I was
hoping to avoid for 2 reasons:

 1. $$$ 2. I’m not rad.

It’s really hard to find fit info and product reviews, but I finally
settled on creating a custom pair so I could tone down the rad. There’s a
sale going on right now, so while it’s not cheap, it’s not outrageous,
either. They’re Radar EV Pitch, I think, and might still be a little too
rad - but who’s going to see me? Well, now I’m going to have great eye
protection at night, but what about sunglasses for daytime? I have 2 pairs,
and while I think they’re fetching, they aren’t providing great coverage -
esp. the Warby Parkers. The sun comes down into my eyes from the top of the
glasses, and I don’t want to put up with it anymore. At least not on my
 bike.

*I want to know: What do you all like to use for sunglasses while
riding? I want good coverage, but I don’t want to look like a cyborg,
 either. *

Lastly, I feel like I am morphing from something that once resembled
Practical Cycle Chic into what The Bike Snob would call The Lone Wolf.
Picture the polka dot helmet, white arms sleeves, Keen sandals, neck
bandanna and Oakleys - it’s not lookin’ good, it’s lookin’ Lone Wolf-y.

*Should I just embrace it and get wild Oakley’s for the sun? Or do you
have a more reasonable suggestion? Is there a gold standard for cycling
sunglasses? I have 20/10 vision, they tell me, so prescription is not a
 factor here. *

[RBW] Sunglasses

2020-06-02 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Hi guys,

I had already impulse purchased the clear glasses when I wrote this post. I had
tried my shooting glasses but they didn’t seat well under my helmet, bounced up
and down and they weren’t optically correct, so it made things worse and I
tossed them in my bag after minutes of wearing them and went bare-faced
instead. As soon as I got home I went to Oakley’s website and ordered a pair of
Radar Pitch glasses with clear lenses. I knew they would play well with my
helmet (so many cyclists wear them), they were 20% off and I was just so
completely fed up with not having night glasses that I plunked down the money.

But then that brought me to sunglasses. Once I read sunglasses reviews and saw
that people were saying things like:
~I don’t have wind making my eyes tear anymore

~I don’t have sun coming in through the top of my glasses

~I can see images crisply on the road [Oakley’s Prism technology]

~My peripheral vision is so much better with the wraparound

~My glasses don’t bounce around on my runs anymore, they stay put

Well, THAT was when I realized I have all those same issues with lifestyle
sunglasses. And I live in the desert with like 300 days of sun, and there isn’t
a day that goes by that I am not outside exercising in it. Running, biking,
swimming, walking. I was accustomed to the above annoyances, but now I don’t
have to be. I’m going to look a *little* rad, not a lot rad, and that seems
like a fair trade-off. I did buy a pair of sunglasses that were really on sale
and if you behave yourselves and refrain from laughing and pointing, I might
just show them to you. 藍

2020-06-02 Thread Ray Evans
I have been using these VP-831P Bauhaus pedals for 4 years now, after
seeing them in a picture of rich@rivbike's Appaloosa. I love how sticky the
grip tape is with any footwear I use, and I eliminate the problem I had
with getting scratched up with studded pedals. I don't typically ride in
rain or off road much, so can't speak from experience on how they work for
that. But they just look very cool in a "bauhaus" kind of stealthy
minimal way. The only problem is I think they are discontinued. I found a
few on ebay UK awhile back, so it's worth a search if they strike your
fancy.

Both installed once, very low use.
What I've got is:

SL-BS79 Dura-Ace: $65 paypal'd/shipped conti USA - These are current, I
think, D-A, which _do not_ have friction option.
SL- - D-A?: $55 paypal'd/shipped conti USA - A previous version, model#
unmarked, D-A level I think because covers/surround are black i/o gray,
these have a friction option.

I can add photos a little later, want to get out on the rollers first

I use VP Harrier pedals (they have a safety recall and I haven't gotten
around to trading them in for the newer version) because they are the
largest (120 x 110) pedal I could find. I have some kind of weird range of
motion issue with my right knee or hip and I always end up with my right
foot barely on the pedal. Really wide pedals have mostly solved this.

"That said, I still use and prefer photochromatic lenses because I just don't
like dark lenses on a cloudy day. Too gloomy for me, makes me want to turn
around and go home : )

Best cloudy day lens is yellow. Totally turn a gloomy cloudy day into a bright
sunny one. Extend your riding time for at least another 20 or 30 miles. But if
sun does come out, you're screwed as the yellow lens intensifies the light.
Just can't win these days."

That's one thing I like about the Prizm lens on my Oakley EV Zero: it has a
fascinating ability to separate light from shade, and seems to "brighten" the
scene as the clouds roll in. It has to be pretty dang gloomy outside before I
have to take them off.

I have the Prizm on an Oakley Crossrange I use off the bike which has a much
lighter lens marketed to golfers. It's possibly too much light transmission for
cycling on a very bright day, but great for everything else. In the end there's
a whole lotta lenses out there with different light transmission qualities and
you have to find what works best for you for your conditions.

[RBW] Re: Sunglasses

2020-06-02 Thread masmojo
Leah, first of all, I think your rad, but I understand your desire not to look
too techie.

Beyond that, it seems we are talking 2 different things here?
1) sunglasses
2) clear bug shields

To me it's all a very personal aesthetic, but although I have some Oakley's I
don't wear them much. The Oakley's I had last have some sort of fancy coating,
(irridium?) which look great, but seem to scratch VERY easily. I just didn't
feel they were worth the $$'s
There's typically some inexpensive new brands that pop up on ebay. I bought
some Rudy Project shortly after that brand first appeared, now they cost a lot!
Trick with buying sunglasses on ebay is don't look solely at price. You don't
have to spend $100, but less than $20 is equally bad.
A brand that you can sometimes get inexpensively that I like is Dragons. A
couple others that are almost as good. RAZE and Electric (they may spell that
some clever way). I've been wearing my RAZE almost exclusively lately; In fact
I am on my second pair! First pair popped out of my handlebar bag & I was
bothered enough to by the same exact thing again.
Which leads me to the main point. The perfect cycling sunglasses are decent
quality, but not so precious your going to have a meltdown if they get lost,
broken or stolen.

As far as clear bug shields go, I've never really cottoned to them for
different reasons glare, condensation, ineffective perspiration evacuation,
etc.
That said you could probably ride over to Lowe's or Home Depot & look at
they're safety glasses, possibly try them on get an idea if it'll work for you.

In my younger days I had to ride to/from work at night through some fields and
I can tell you; although it makes a lot of sense to wear white at night for
visibility, it makes you a giant target for bugs! Especially when the
headlights of the oncoming cars hit you; certain times of the year it's like
flipping a switch.
As soon as the headlights land on you so to do the bugs!

Jan this kind of stuff is wayyy OT. Please contact Jim the site admin and
have him remove it. Don't assume for one second I don't care about what's
happening everywhere, this is simply not the place for it.

2020-06-02 Thread Jan Heine
I'm sorry – I had mixed feelings about posting here. I just wanted to let
people know, not start a never-ending discussion, have all kinds of trolls
descend on this group, etc. I offer the blog for discussion, if people feel
the need.

Thank you.

basically shush discussion. Okay. If this isn’t off topic I don’t know what is

[RBW] BQ fund drive for Black Lives Matter

2020-06-02 Thread Jan Heine
We want to do more than just say nice words. We want to help make change
that is real and lasting. With that intent, we’re renewing the tradition of
Bicycle
Quarterly fund drives to address urgent needs. For 24 hours, from 0:00
until 24:00 (Pacific Time) on *June 2, 2020*, we’re donating $ 36 for each
Bicycle
Quarterly subscription to *Black Lives Matter*. That is the full amount of
a U.S. subscription. Details are at

https://www.renehersecycles.com/blog/

And let's not turn this into an off-topic political discussion, please.
This is just a public service announcement. Feel free to comment on the
blog. Thank you!

[RBW] Re: Sunglasses

2020-06-02 Thread 'Dave Small' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Leah,

I suggest starting with these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000RKS07I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8=1

I have Tifosi clear but I like these better and use them instead. If you
don't like these you're out a whopping $8.25, although you're not really
*out* anything 'cause you can keep 'em around for hazardous household
tasks, like chopping jalapeños or fiddling with tiny springs that could
blind you if they fly free. You might like Premium Brand glasses just
fine, but why not give a pair of cheap ones a try before you step up to the
overpriced models?
