Now I've got a bunch of packing to do.

[RBW] Re: New stuff on my Roadeo

2013-11-15 Thread Alex Moll
I agree with you, Don, sounds like a great drivetrain for a great bike.

Many (most?) of my bikes have DT shifters, which I think are great.
However, when my custom Riv came available at one of my LBSs for a great
price, I couldn't resist it. It has a 3x10 Campy drivetrain - with carbon
Record brifters. Not what I would have chosen, but admit it all works
really slick. The Silver brakes clear the 32mm GB Cypres and the 45mm
Honjo's just fine.

[RBW] Re: Seattle Mechanic Recommendation- Overhaul

2013-10-26 Thread Alex Moll
Every shop mentioned so far is great, and there are several others. Go with
the one local to you. If it's R+E, you can't go wrong there. One of my
favorite shops, because they actually manufacture bikes there - top notch
frame shop in the basement - led by Denis Bushnell. The mechanics upstairs
are very good, too.

Seattle is blessed to have two such shops - the other one being downtown
(near Pike Place Market) - Elliott Bay Bicycles, home of Davidson Bicycles.
Both shops are really incredible.

This is the way it was 100+ years ago for most shops. There aren't many
full-blown shops like this left - even overseas. Alex Singer in Paris,
Daniel Salmon somewhere in western France, Woodrup Cycles in Leeds,
England. Toei/Grand Bois in Tokyo. I'm sure there are others, but my point
is that these shops are now rare, and I really appreciate the few that are
left.

Cheers,
Alex

[RBW] Re: Your method of going around brake levers with cloth bar tape?

2013-06-09 Thread Alex Moll
Some good advice here. Another top tip for troublesome cloth: soak it in
water before you wrap. It helps it stretch, lay flat (not bunch and kink as
much), and as it dries, it shrinks a bit so it's nice and tight.

BTW, I only do this if I'm having trouble with a particular brand of tape,
and/or bar shape. I usually try to wrap it dry first, and if I end up with
lumps, etc, I'll unwrap entire side, throw it in the sink for a quick soak,
and re-wrap. Works for me.

[RBW] Re: I raced my Riv in a mountain bike race

2013-05-28 Thread Alex Moll
HA - good one!

I forgot to mention one snide remark from a fellow asking where my racks,
bags, and panniers were. Pretty sure I kicked his ass.

I also meant to point out in my original post that I'm NOT a racer. Don't
have the knack for it, not good at it, don't really enjoy it, haven't
really raced anything since college days more than two decades ago. I much
prefer to just ride, but I'm also not totally averse to riding hard once in
awhile. And this mixed surface course was pretty fun to ride.

This event is a bit different, though. I think one of the S2S slogans is
more than just a race. As you can sense from the pics, it was a fun boys
weekend - hanging out, joking and laughing with a bunch of colleagues as
another school year draws to a close.

The top teams recruit racers from all over the world, and they get
national, olympic, and worlds caliber athletes (thus the S2S nickname
Bellingham Olympics.) Those teams finish hours ahead of us. My team is
mostly 40ish guys in better than average (USA) shape, that somehow find the
whole event (weekend) fun. One guy is a triathlete, but I think he's the
only racer in the bunch. Still, we finished 144th out of nearly 500 teams -
many of those teams finished hours behind us (and they had fun, too.)

I think these sorts of events are becoming more popular, and they are
pretty laid back and fun. So if you get an invite - consider it.

[RBW] I raced my Riv in a mountain bike race

2013-05-27 Thread Alex Moll
Ski to Sea (aka the Bellingham Olympics) is a 93 mile, 7-leg relay race
from Mount Baker to Bellingham Bay. My principal and a group of teacher
buddies have been doing this event for a few years. XC Ski-downhill
ski-run-road bike-canoe-XC bike-kayak. Their mountain biker decided to
retire, so I was asked to join the team. The mountain bike leg is about 13
miles long and mixed terrain and surfaces, but not extremely technical.
They started allowing cyclocross bikes a couple years ago, and though the
mountain bike would be more comfortable in a lot of spots, the 'cross bikes
are faster overall. They also decided to change the name of the leg to
Cross-Country Bike.

Country Bike? Sounds like a job for my Riv! I have a couple of mountain
bikes, but knew the Riv would be faster overall.

I pre-rode the course on Saturday with JB greens. What fun! The tires
worked great on the fairly dry course. Alas, it rained all night, and all
day Sunday - which required a last minute switch to 'cross mud tires. The
Michelin Tires were labelled 700x30, but actually measured 34mm (pleasant
surprise!) The Silver sidepulls had plenty of mud clearance, and worked
fine in the muck. I did have one mishap fairly early in the event - I
leaned over to far on wet pavement, lost the front and laid it down.
Luckily, it was a slow/tight/technical 90 degree turn. That did cause me to
be a bit more cautious, and possibly the minute I needed to crack Top 100
glory.

So, the bike did great and the engine wasn't as weak as I'd feared. I
finished 170 out of nearly 500.

Patrick,

Your attached photo (must be from Flickr?) is a pic of my 1980ish Colnago
super. I think the chain rest idea is super slick, and works very well. The
rear end is spaced at 126mm, and I'm using a regular 5 cog 14-24 Regina Oro
freewheel. I know someone who is using an ultra 6 freewheel in a similar
era Gios - it apparently works fine. My Colnago come with the dropouts
already tapped for the PC, I just chased the threads. I've seen a 1978
Colnago Super with the same dropout casting, but the holes were not yet
drilled and tapped.

You may be interested to know that Campagnolo also made a single bolt
version with works with any long horizontal dropout. I put one of those on
my 1974 Bill Davidson, and it also works great. I'll try to attach a pic.

Great report, Brian - I enjoyed reading that. 200K would be plenty for
me, and you're NOT a slow rider. I just think most of those guys are
FAST. Riding a 200K this time of year, in this weather, is really for
the hard core riders anyway. I bet there are a greater number of
medium (us), and slow riders in the summer.

Have you done STP? Boy, that's a complete cross-section of riders.
I've done it twice, and think I've seen just about everything. No
desire to do it again, unless my sons really want to do it when they
are teenagers.

Keep telling us about your rando adventures. I'm interested, but not
sure I'll commit just yet. I'm definitely game for a populaire

summer. Anything longer will have to wait until the kids are grown.

[RBW] Re: 46 Noodles swapped for 42s

2012-02-12 Thread Alex Moll
Gotta be something to do with shoulder width. I love my 48 noodles.
The narrow bars are really to only thing I don't love about my vintage
rides. They handle great with the narrow bars, but I'm just not as
comfortable. I'm a little bigger than average at 6'3 200lbs.

The only thing I miss -- slightly -- from the 46s is the additional room on

[RBW] Re: What's your winter project? 2011 version

2011-11-18 Thread Alex Moll
Yes, building your own wheels brings a lot of satisfaction. If you
take your time, they will turn out great, and be very reliable. I've
built about 8 wheelsets. I'm VERY slow, but they've been great wheels.

I need to build at least 2 wheel sets this winter. One 650B set for my
campeur (Grandpa of Bombadil):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/39151498@N07/sets/72157626711955076/
Another set of wheels for my 1954 R.O. Harrison:

I'm also cleaning up a 1956 W.F. Holdsworth Whirlwind:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/39151498@N07/sets/72157627733642143/

I'm going to try to get these three bikes done in time for the Seattle
Bike Expo Vintage Show in March.

I've also worked on that Message in a Bottle guitar part - it's not
technically difficult, but boy are those notes spread out on the fret
board. I've got largish hands, but I remember some aching fingers from
those riffs! That's a fun one, though.

Enjoy!
Alex

(non bike) Master the guitar part in Message in a Bottle (if my wrist will
ever recover from a recent break).

[RBW] Re: Tektro TRP Brake Levers

2011-10-30 Thread Alex Moll
You beat me to the punch, Max. I just logged in to post of review of
these levers.

When I first saw them on rivbike.com, I was taken aback. They looked a
bit Romulan, or Klingon to me (did Grant write that?) Then I saw the
high polish, the tan hoods, and the drillium. The looks were starting
to grow on me, and they did look comfortable.

I decided to go for it, and finally got around to putting them on this
week. Went for a good ride today, and confirmed they are very
comfortable, and work very well. I especially like the quick release
button - really slick, and makes opening up my Paul Racers WAY easier.

Highly recommended!

[RBW] Re: Riding around Seattle

2011-09-15 Thread Alex Moll
René,

Glad to hear you had some really fine chaps showing you around - I've
enjoyed their company a few times. Sorry I couldn't join you, but I'm
a school teacher in the suburbs north of Seattle. This is a very
hectic time of year, especially since I moved to a different school
this year to teach PE and Woodshop! A dream job for me, but it's taken
a ton of time and energy to get my program going.

Hope you had a smooth start to your school year, Rob M.

Seattle Riv Riders - I hope we can get together again sometime this
fall. I've really enjoyed the few events we've had so far. I still
dream of a Mountain Loop Highway S24O . . . next summer?

Best to all,
Alex

I hope I'm not presuming too much, but you may be thinking of my

Camelbak MOLLE pouch, for the Camelbak Better Bottle (also great)
available at many military NEX/BX/PX and/or online vendors:

This setup is still working great - I really dig it.

[RBW] Re: Sackville Grid Grey fabric

2011-04-04 Thread Alex Moll
I like the grid grey a lot. Have a couple of the other bags, too. The
fabric looks and feels similar to regular waxed cotton, but the grid
just gives a rip-stop feel. I like the grey colour, and I like the
geometric pattern of the grid. Definitely my favourite fabric.

I even bought the panniers for my rough-stuff touring bike, and love
them. Don't have pics of that yet.

[RBW] Re: Framesaver Time?

2011-03-24 Thread Alex Moll
Hi Rob,

Hard to tell from the photo - but sounds like you're pretty sure it's
rust?

JPW's Framesaver is good stuff, and a lot of LBSs in Seattle carry it.
I know Recycled Cycles used to, and likely still does. I think RBW
uses Boeshield, and that's what I typically use (for chains also.)
Around here, you can get Boeshield at any boating/marine store, and
Sears. Cheapest to buy it by the gallon - I think I got my last gallon
at The Rust Store (dot com.)

I soak my chains in concentrated Simple Green for a few hours, rinse
thoroughly and allow to dry, then soak in a well-sealed tupperware
container of Boeshield, wipe off and hang to dry overnight. This is a
weekend operation, as necessary. In fact, I'll be doing that to the
chain on my AHH this weekend.
