[RBW] Indian Head Century in Indian Head, MD
I signed up for the 100. But we got there late and were concerned about not making the rest stops, so we just did the 70 mile route. *The weather and clothes:* The weather was about 70's-90's. Hot and humid. Bright blue skies with some clouds made for a beautiful day. I wore a jackpot-found-for-less-than-4$-at-a-Goodwill Ibex wool t-shirt, and wool 3/4 tights that I scored on clearance on Ibex site last winter. I've had the shirt for a couple years now and it is getting some small holes in it. My wife fingernail polished them or something like that to keep them from getting any bigger. Nike sneakers. Cotton socks. Summer Gloves. Helmet made in 2009, I think. *The Ride:* The 70 route is the same route as the 100, but eliminates a thirty mile loop that splits off the 70 course. I hopefully will do the 100 next year. Run by the Oxon Hill Bike club. The full 100 has ~3240 feet climbing/elevation? Not sure what the diff in those terms means, or if they are the same. A handful of short-ish, steep hills. The rest of the ride was gently rolling southern Maryland country road and shouldered country highway terrain. Beautiful. The last rest stop is at mile 89 mark on the century map, I guess 59 on the 70 route. If you make it to there, you can recovery spin the last almost totally flat miles to the finish if you are tired. At least on the 70 route you could. There was a beautiful new looking MUP for about 5 miles at the end that was flat and wide. As soon as you pop out at the end of it you are about .2 miles from the end. Traffic was light and the car drivers were friendly, even one slowing to ask me about the event. This is probably a good step up into a century with some hills if you are used to flat centuries and don't want anything too hard, but want to try a century that isn't flat. I would guess that upwards of 1000 people were there. When I was at one of the latter rest stops they said they counted about 575 people who came through so far. I am so glad that this century is offered. And only $30 to register and close to home!!! More info about the ride here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/70237737@N00/albums/72157658179109169 I think Palinscar and Joan from this forum are involved in this ride or have been in the past. I saw a woman at the finish picnic who looked like she could have been Joan (from pics I have seen on this forum of her) but wasn't sure and I was too shy to ask. Starts at a beautiful park with plenty of parking and the walk up tables to get wrist bands (no numbers for riders) were lickity split fast and very friendly service. *The bikes:* I saw no Rivendells that I was aware of Bummer. But I did see some other lugged steel. One was Japanese. Started with an H. "Hiroki"?!?! It was pink. No Palinscars or Joans that I met along the way. I saw more titanium than ever I am aware of seeing on an organized ride. Moots, and Sevens, and Litespeeds. Maybe one recumbent? No banana bikes. Lotsa alu/carbon One guy was on a gigantic bright blue cruiser bike. I think there were tassels hanging from the grips. I think I may have seen one tandem. I was on my 53 Bleriot. *The pictures:* Just a few. I'll post a video clip later. https://www.flickr.com/photos/70237737@N00/albums/72157658179109169 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Tested 6 pairs of 700c (29in) tires - results and impressions
Matt, BQ studies tire construction to determine which designs give the rider the fastest and most comfortable ride quality. It is alleged that the speed percentages measured in the BQ studies (like the slowest tire tested was ~20% slower than the fastest tire tested., iirc) adds up over long distances. So a 10 hour ride with the slowest tires, in theory, would take only 8 hours on the fastest tires. I have not noticed significant speed increases with GB or Compass tires over others I have ridden. But they are very comfortable, seem to keep their momentum up very well when starting up a hill, and their cornering is fantastic. I didn't get the last two benefits from my Schwalbe Marathons, though they were also excellent tires. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: How to get out Brooks sit bone divets sop the rear frame down;t dig into my rear end.
I'm thinking of a step by step: 1. Tension saddle 2. Proof hide top. Wait a day or so and see how it feels. If that doesn't work: 3. Tension more. If that doesn't work: 4. Imperialise it with a cutout, and see if that flattens out the top. If that doesn't work: 5. Install new Imperial saddle. 6. Find a nice place in the house to place honey Flyer as a decoration and as memorabilia for all the nice rides I had on it. I'll be disappointed though to learn that a Brooks is done in less than a year, though. [RBW] How to get out Brooks sit bone divets sop the rear frame down;t dig into my rear end.

People say these saddles last for 20 years or so. But mine is becoming unrideable at this point. Any advice? It is a sprung Flyer, so I am not sure if tension bolt tightening will help. Re: [RBW] Chauncey-modified 2003 Curt
I'm still deciding on if I like Loup 38 or Cypres 32 650bGB/Compass tires before I buy a bunch for the long term. Hetres ride great, but don't allow fender clearances I am comfortable with on my Sam or Bleriot. I think the 38 and 32s ride just as nice. Less weight. Easier to get between the brake pads. Second one, seemed longer but a little less steep. But still really steep. 26x gears. Stopped right before the top as mental willpower and legs were blown by that time (.need..more..willpower.). Resumed riding to top after brief standing rest. Cannot believe how weak I am despite the riding I have done the last few years. Same for the third hill. Legs were shot after that for the last miles home. Even the easy rolling terrain was hard with blown legs. I am so weak. OK, Randonneurs can stop laughing at me now. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: WTT New Barlow Pass for New Jack Brown Green
1. Compass/Bicycle Quarterly articles/blog state that tires will get an mm or two wider with use/time, iirc. 2. They state that rim width plays a role in how wide the tire will empuffen, 3. They also state that handling on 700c bikes degrades with any tire wider than 35mm. They believe running wider tires is best on a 650b bike because they keep their nimble handling with wider tires. They say that the reason they do make wider than 700 x 35mm tires is to help 700c-ers get to experience the cush of wider tires. But they believe handling degrades at anything wider than 35mm on a 700c wheeled bike. Unless Compass/BQ has changed their position since I last read. 4. I think their stated tire measurements could only be made clearer by including the name/width of the rim it was measured on, as well as how much they were initially empuffed for the initial measurement (psi/bar) used to list in their tire description, and a disclaimer to educate the consumer that real life width will be determined by rim width, tire pressure, and time/use. Empuffery is definitely more complex than first meets the eye. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Double leg Kickstands... lets talk
My Father-in-law had that kinda kickstand back in China. I don't think I'd like the weight of that kstand either. China's got great ideas for baby seats and umbrella holders, too. But in Canton China, seems like people are just cruising to work/school. Nobody cares about average speeds and I don't think there are many, if any, hills to climb in Guangzhou, China!!! They don't like helmets, either!! Too hot!!! Everything over there is pure function. They even ride their bikes when they are soo rusted!! You couldn't go fast if you tried in Canton - too crowded and no one seems to observe any kind of right-of-way or traffic laws, except the cars who have to stop at red lights. No one has to worry about parts failing on 30+ mile descents, like we do here in the States. They are cruising flat in crowded traffic at 10mph with bike shops on every corner, so to speak! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: WTT New Barlow Pass for New Jack Brown Green
I don't remember what he attributes it too. I just remember him writing on the blog that, for 700c bikes, he felt that handling gets worse when the tire with exceeds 35mm, while 650b bikes keep their nimble handling with tires wider than that. I am pretty sure he used the term degrades, but it doesn't matter what the term was, as he was the one doing the writing, and he had a right to put it however he wanted since it is his private blog, and not a scientific journal. I'm not gonna look it up or anything. [RBW] Re: Double leg Kickstands... lets talk
1. Perhaps integration is the key. A bike that has a kickstand built into the frame in such a way that it doesn't damage anything to have the kickstand used with or without the bike loaded up to 100 lbs. Since this means tourers, I don't think the consumers would mind a built in k-stand since they are planning to load the bike up anyway. Other, non-touring specific models could just have regular plates for one leggers. 2. Freddie Hoffman rides Waterfords with a 100lb load on his bike, if I remember right. [RBW] Re: Rain Gear
For warm weather rain riding, I'm almost at the point where I want to wear Keen waterproof sandals and just get wet everywhere else. Throw a shower cap on the Brooks and just change clothes when I get home. Though I will say that so far my Gore Tech shoe covers worked well on the last rain ride I was on. I also sweat too much under rainwear. The last poncho ride I took had my hands getting caught up in the poncho while moving hands around on the drops. Dangerous. After the 25? Mile ride I was soaked anyway, saddle wet too as I kept finding myself sitting on the tail of the poncho. So I am thinking Keen waterproof sandals, shower cap on Brooks. Wool clothes can be changed when I get home. Everyone else I saw riding that day was in regular clothes looking like they didn't mind the soaking. As for wet weather in the cold months, you'll have to ask a Randonneur. I haven't figured that one out yet. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Maybe there is a perception that the car engine's capabilities can be easily boosted to compensate for the car fender and lights weight more easily than a bike engine can be improved, making weight more of a critical penalty to the bike engine than to a car engine? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Fenders in Summer
Fenders are not 100% effective but very close! I like my fenders a lot. Stuff still blows out the sides of fenders (both on my Longboards and Honjos) and can still get on your feet and stays and fork blades. Not much, but you can see traces after riding through dirt/mud areas. But my frames look nice and clean, and my fendered bikes are wy cleaner than my non-fendered bike was. I also enjoy knowing that I am getting hit by mostly falling rain only, and not the possible urine, chemicals, vomit, and offal that may be swirling in the water on the road. So I keep the fenders on year round here in the wet summers and road-salty winters of Maryland. Also, I think silver racks on a bike without fenders looks kind of strange. Silver fenders really go well with silver racks and make the bike look prettier, in my opinion. They compliment each other well. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Racer loves Rivendell
The pro cycling people must have very good reasons to ride what they ride. I don't think these people are dummies. While I am not enamoured with them, I have respect for people who can go 20+mph average speeds and pump out sustained 400+ watts on mountain climbs for 40+ minutes at a time. They worked awfully hard for it. And while speed isn't everything in the whole picture of bike riding, I think it is a valid form of bicycle use. and it is quite an accomplishment to be able to ride like that. But I do think it would be fun to kid them though in some good-natured, chiding-fun way by stationing people with signs 2/3rds along the TdeF routes that say: If you were on a Roadeo, you'de be done by now.. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] How do I tell if I need a spacer for a 7speed cassette?
1. 7-speed has a little wider spacing between cogs, which will hopefully help me friction shift better than I have done in 10,9,and 8. 2. Also, I have found that I hardly ever use the 11 tooth cog on my SRAM 8-speed cassette, (11-13-15-17-20-23-26-30), so I am interested in trying the silver Shimano HG50 13-30 (13-15-17-20-23-26-30). Same ratios that I like, just without the 11. I like the small jumps. I don't like big jumps in cassettes. 3. The Sam needs a new chain, so I am just refining the cassette to taste while I am at it. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: How do I tell if I need a spacer for a 7speed cassette?
What would be cool is a 5-speed in the back and a double crankset up front like in the olden days. But my legs can't power that, and I don't know how anyone did back in the pre-1980's era. I live in rolling-to-hilly terrain and it's all I can do to get down the road in my 36T middle ring with the 11-30 cassette I have in the back. It was also all I could do when I had 11-32 in the back. I don't feel any diff. There is no such thing as restorative rides, or walking your bike around here. You go up and down, or on a rare flat, or a false flat, so you are always working hard. I am a weak rider. I am not an athlete like racers and Randonneurs are. On the rare true flats we have around here, I cruise somewhere in that 13-15-17 range, while in that middle 36T ring. I got a cassette once that had 11-13-15-18, and that was too big a jump between 15 and 18 while cruising on flats. I felt I was either bogging down in the 15, or spinning too fast in the 18. I lost the sweet spot in that cassette. But I have found the 13-15-17-20 works really well for me. I don't like anything bigger than 3 tooth jumps in the easier gears for me, so the 20-23-26-30 side of the cassette works nicely for me. So, with 7 and 8 speed cassettes, I am trying to strike a balance between the close tooth counts of a 10-speed, but with the better friction shifting of a 5-speed. I find the 11-13-15-17-20-23-26-30 keeps my cadence smooth throughout the changes over the cassette, and I also enjoy the mental relaxation of having less cogs in the back, though I don't have the legs to ever go to single speed. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] How do I tell if I need a spacer for a 7speed cassette?
Hi y'all, Want to try a Shimano 7speed cassette with tight spacing I like on my Blue Sam. How can I tell if I need a 4.5 spacer or not with my freehub? How do I get around those rivets on the back of the cassette that won't allow the spacer to sit flush onto the freehub? Grind them off? [RBW] Re: WTB: 7 cm Tallux Stem
An alternate suggestion if the stem swap doesn't fix it: I used B17's and started to get low back pain and after a year of struggling to figure out why it hurt when I rode, I got a sprung Flyer saddle, and that nullified all the road shock and my back doesn't hurt anymore. It was the road shock going up into my low back through a regular saddle that was hurting me. Not saying that's your situation, but just suggesting something that might help if the bars change doesn't work. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
