Be careful Leah, RAGBRAI was on my bucket list and I finally rode it in
2015 at age 58. It was supposed to be a "one and done" for me, but I've
now crossed Iowa every year since except 2020 (which I rode virtually) and
even convinced my daughter to join me in '21. She rode again with me last
year for the 50th anniversary ride so I think she liked the vibe! That
being said, last year was the most difficult for me due to the wind, heat,
humidity and the hills. Usually expected some of the above but all day,
every day was tough. I am going to skip this year and spend my money
riding the Katy Trail across MO with my daughter Katy who will be 30. I
can not pass up that kind of time spent riding with her...now, if I can
only get my son to join in before I can't do it anymore!

I have ridden my Sam Hillborne(60) most years, and my Waterford
Atlantis(62) the others. I had the good fortune to meet Julian on his
Atlantis too! Others have had good advice about the charters and I
personally think the tent service some offer is worth every penny.
Brancel and Pork Belly Ventures have great camp setups, but my favorite
years were the ones where I joined a team supported by their own
vans/busses that coordinated with volunteers in each town that would put us
up at their houses. We had to set up our own tents but usually had the use
of showers and water. Most even supplied dinner and cocktails in the
evening.

About riding from Omaha to the start...the route changes every year so the
start town is usually quite a ways (by bike) from the Omaha Arpt. I drive
from Pittsburgh PA to the end town and park the car, then I board a shuttle
to take me to the start town and ride back to the car.

Michael, ...when you get Iowa in the future, You and your Bleriot will
enjoy this "rolling block party". Hope you make it soon!

I am bone on bone in both knees after five arthroscopic procedures. I
think I will try another round of "knee lube" injections to get me thru

I'm consulting with the doc about doing both knees at the same time. Leah,
do any patients get both done at once?

I'll be waiting to hear/read how recovery goes Richard. Good Luck,

[RBW] Re: Riv Ride 10/15/22 reminder + pin order

Due to the 6hr + drive, I was hoping to turn this into an overnight two

cannot attend.

Have Fun! Maybe next time.

[RBW] Re: Help me buy a Riv

2022-03-29 Thread Rusty Click
Graham,
I live in Pittsburgh, PA and if your travels take you anywhere near...say
somewhere between CLE and IAD, I'd bring you my 60 Sam to ride. I also
have a MUSA 62 Atlantis that's set up as a tourer if you'd like to try it.
I use the Sam very much like you plan to do and love the ride. I've even
had racks on it and used it for weeklong touring (before Atlantis), and it
held up fine even if a little out of its wheelhouse.

[RBW] Re: Platypus Questions

2022-01-10 Thread Rusty Click
Thanks to all,

It may be a tough sell as opposed to continued tinkering with the Treks
setup, but maybe, just maybe I can convince her to try the Riv.

Roberta, I too, believe that the Platy will be a little heavier but with a
lighter build, it would fit her needs nicely. She is strictly a bike
path/rail-trail rider and It would be "rolling weight", and a comfy ride.
If we are ever out your way, I would love for her to take you up on a test
ride. Future Riv Sister??

Joe...Originally my Sam was racked and bagged up for touring that it wasn't
really meant for. The Atlantis (62 MUSA) has since taken that roll, and
the Sam is on a diet, loosing the heavy back rack, basket, and soon the
wheelset and tires. Then, I believe, it will be similar weight-wise to a
Platypus build that she would ride.

Phillip...much appreciated points on weight saving choices as opposed to a
standard Riv build. If this quest goes forward, I'll definitely refer to
these. She rides with a Ortlieb handlebar bag and a small under seat bag
for repair needs...that's it. ( I have to carry anything else, like
jackets and spare water bottles in a pannier)

Another question...How much does the Platypus weigh? When I see pictures,

[RBW] Re: Intro from Pittsburgh

2021-03-16 Thread Rusty Click
Welcome Josh! Great looking bikes.
I ride around da 'Burgh on a 62 Atlantis or my 60 S. Hillborne however,
this year has kept me mostly in the S. Hills. While I don't commute on my
bike (retired), I love riding out to various spots to find neighborhood
coffee shops, bakeries, see the eagles, etc. My friends and I have done a
few S24O's...they are a good way to see different sections of trails. I
occasionally provide bike guide service for day trips and group rides with
a local outfitter too. There are plenty of good riding here in Pittsburgh.
Hopefully, we'll run into each other!

Re: [RBW] Loose headset? Something more sinister?

2021-03-14 Thread Rusty Click
It sounds like a problem I had not too long ago. A slight feeling of
looseness with an occasional squeak eventually was tracked to a not fully
tightened quill stem bolt. I loosened and removed the stem from the
headset completely. Cleaned and greased the threads that pull the wedgie
thing of the stem, then reinstalled and made sure to tighten the stem bolt
"firmly". Sorry, but I do not know the lb/ft of torque recommended...I
just winged it. I believe this may be a good place to start that you can
do yourself and if it doesn't solve the problem, then call in the
specialists at the LBS.

Good Luck,
Rusty

[RBW] Re: WTN: 46cm Nitto Noodle

2021-02-19 Thread Rusty Click
Kieran,

I have a heat treated 48 Noodle that just came off another bike that I
planned on listing when I get it cleaned up. I also have the Shimano brake
levers that were with it available. $40 for the bar and $20 for the brake
levers plus actual shipping (don't know what postage to BC may be from
Pgh,PA.)

Drop me a note if your interested and I'll wipe 'em off and send pics.

Nitto makes a very nice one and the part that stays attached to your

Another issue with rackless is I don't think you've ever ridden a
saddlebag that way, the rubbing on the back of the legs bothers some

[RBW] Re: Swaping one Riv for another

2019-02-11 Thread Rusty Click
I did the same this past year. I have a late 2011 DTT 60 Sam that I used
for everything. It is great, but struggles with heavy touring loads. I
ordered a MUSA 62 Atlantis for the heavier stuff and have shifted the Sam
to casual, more spritely riding. There is plenty of overlap, but the Sam
is now much lighter and de-racked. I run a handlebar bag and small Swift
seat bag for essentials. The Atlantis now has the touring racks and basket
and takes various load configurations without a hitch. The surprise has
been, how good it rides with nothing but me on the saddle. No matter which
bike I hop on, I'm treated to a smile inducing ride! I love 'em both.

Both bikes are 700c and I haven't been bothered by toe overlap unless my
footwear has moved way forward on the pedals, so I assume the issue is non
existent with the MIT Atlantis in the 650b.

Go for it, and set them up to compliment each other.

[RBW] East Coast Riv Ride

2019-01-21 Thread Rusty Click
I recently saw, and no longer can find the post, looking for interest in an
East Coast Riv Ride. It mentioned the Hudson River valley area. Maybe the
post-er lost interest or had no replies, but I hope it resurfaces with
renewed zeal. I would be very interested in such an outing. I think maybe
the "post holiday, its really cold out, I have no idea what this years
riding will be like" doldrums have us east coasters in a funk.
What ever happened to the RivRallyEast crowd?

I've been attempting to follow EBDJ for about the same amount of time as

and I'm not hungry for food during the ride. I have lost over 10 pounds in
this time. I am trying not to over think what's going on physically, and
just apply these new things into my routine.

Thanks guys, the biggest problem is that the Sam is my only ride. It's a

you are right that I will miss it.

[RBW] New Bike Syndrome

2018-01-12 Thread Rusty Click
I am suffering from this condition, and wondered if it is normal. You see,
I've recently ordered a new Atlantis (62), and I find myself looking at
owners pictures of their builds, and obsessing over whether to have Riv do
a complete build, or move what I can from my '11 S. Hillborne (which will
have to be sold to slightly offset the new bikes expense) and only worry
over what will not transfer.

Why can't I stop looking at wheels, at handlebars, and brakes? I know I
have many months ahead of wading through the minutiae of all the choices to
be made, including the selling of my loyal Sam. Is this "Buyers Remorse",
or some other malady experienced by those of us waiting anxiously for a new
bike? I know I have at least 6 months of this torture/excitement to
endure, and don't know if I will make it through.

I consider all of you on this amazing site, a sort of support group for the
bike obsessed. I am one.

[RBW] Re: Calif. Atlantis rider on the GAP last week?

I'll jump in and echo all the info regarding the GAP and AMTRAK service.

I ride the GAP often between PGH and Cumberland (sometimes to DC,) but my S

to run into other Riv Riders while I'm out, but other than visiting

[RBW] Re: Hub Area Rack, with non-Riv bags...can I?

2017-05-02 Thread Rusty Click
Hi Neil,

I use the Ortleib Sport Packer Plus front bags without a problem. They
are very adjustable. I have also been known to hang a Stone Cold
insulated "beverage" bag on the HAR.
My only complaint isn't with the bags, but with the version of the HAR
itself. I have the "non-loop", early version, and I believe the loop has
to make the setup stiffer. Although, I haven't had any problems with a
moderate load.

[RBW] Re: Multi Use Path Etiquette

2016-12-28 Thread Rusty Click
I believe that you should always signal when passing on multi use trails.
It is often 'required' by the trail rules, and it is certainly common
courtesy whether it is written on a sign or not.
Signaling could be verbal, or a bell. Just because you are the only two
people on the trail, and the pedestrian is far right (with or without pet),
and you plan on cruising by on the far left, doesn't mean it is OK to not
signal. The pedestrian could be on a bluetooth headset getting
instructions from their spouse, or paying attention to the dog who is
paying attention to the squirrel, or engrossed in the social media wonders
of their phone. You just don't know, so call out, or ring the bell, or
both.

Hi Chris,

I missed the ride last year, and am looking forward to joining you. I live
outside of Pittsburgh and ride/guide the local trails often. I agree with

mileages. Another is in Confluence run by Corp of Engineers(?)

Anyway, depending on where you plan to start or where you're staying here
in Pittsburgh, I would like to meet and ride some of, or all the way to
Cumberland. I'll look for further post as to details.

I too, had the same setup and the long flap was a great leaf scoop!

I replaced it with the short flap that Riv has on its site. All is Well.

This brought the flap obviously too close to ground.
Cut about 1/2 off. Now three fingers from the ground. Is this too close?
Will it result in it being a stick scooper?
Next step is probably just remove the flap.
How close to the ground is yours?

[RBW] Re: RAGBRAI 2015

2015-08-03 Thread Rusty Click
In lieu of a day to day trip report, here are some recollections about this
years RAGBRAI.

Our Pennsylvania Mountain Men, a group of 10, consisted of eight riders,
the mini bus owner, and his girlfriend who drove 'the beast' like a road
warrior. They became hitched while on this years RAGBRAI.

We departed Pittsburgh a little later than planned but glad to be on the
way. These veteran RAGBRAI-ers where joined by three newbies, and we three
were glad of the opportunity. About 60 miles short of our planned
overnight on the Illinois side of the river from Davenport, the mini bus
blew 2 tires, and limped into the next town, which was luckily only about 2
miles up the road. The adventure has begun. Hotel rooms were found and
divided up amongst the riders, while everyone wondered about repairs the
next day. In the morning, with tires found and a shop located to mount
them, we headed offfor about 5 miles. That was when the battery tray
decided to drop and drag along the road. We had MacGyver on board though,
and he pulled from his pack some gum and tape, along with some ratchet
straps, to secure everything back in its 'kinda-sorta' space, and we headed
off once again for our host families addresses in far off Sioux City. We
arrived just before sunset and quickly set up tents and put together our
bikes for the morning. We arrived a bit late to enjoy the pre-ride
festivities that the Des Moines Register sponsored, including the music and
vendors, but we were feasted by the host families (3) which found room for
about 70 riders. We took the opportunity to decompress from the trip out,
and enjoyed the ribs, pulled pork, pasta salads, and the 'pop' of a few
cans of brew before heading off for the tents.

The weeks riding started at a little after 6 am the next day. We would
stagger out of camp between 6 and 6:30 all week long, so as to beat the
heat, and set up for the next night. Some would ride early and fast, some
would start early and find breakfast, some would Just Ride and do
whatever, all day long. Guess where I fit in.

We enjoyed wonderful hosts throughout the week. Private residences, church
lawns, and town parks were filled with tents and riders going about the
housework required for the day. Tent set-up, showers, cleaning riding gear
for those of us without kits for every day, and re-hydration filled the
afternoons til we either headed off to check out the overnight towns
entertainment, or melted into camp chairs and eventually into tents to
start all over again. For me, it was 'Introduction to RAGBRAI' 101, and I
admit to being little overwhelmed, but WOW, it was awesome! I never tired
of seeing both lanes full of bikes for as far as i could see.

The days riding took us through a few, well spaced 'Pass Through' towns who
put out the welcome mat with church breakfasts(or dinners), locals pointing
the way to water/food/beer/entertainment, and shade. Along the route, in
between towns, homeowners, farmers, and sometimes an Amish family would
set up tents selling, at very reasonable rates(or even free),
water/gatorade and food. Wait, that doesn't quite tell the tale. So here
is a partial list of just some of the things I stopped for: Organic yogurt
and granola, cappuccino made in a field by a wonderful local roaster, sweet
corn on the cob, Iowa Craft Beer, pork chops, pie and ice cream made by
either the local church ladies or the Amish, beer, various 'food on a
stick' including steak, chicken, corn, alligator(yep), BACON, and more
beer, burritos, pancakes, hard cider, and brats wrapped in BACON. And pie.
And Ice Cream. Did I mention the local beer?

Throughout the week, my S. Hillborne rode without incident. No flats or
mechanicals. The weeks riding totaled a little over 510 miles. That
included the 470-ish official miles, plus optional miles off route to a
church lunch, or riding to the host family locations which were within 5
miles or so of the route and the overnight town. Sometimes, we rode to a
local HS to use their showers. All these extra miles were referred to as,
RAGBRAI Miles.

Reluctantly, hot and tired, and after the mandatory tire dip, we loaded the
bus in Davenport and turned ourselves over to Chrystal's road warrior ways.
We headed east for home. Oh yeah, about 12 miles short of our exit to
Pittsburgh, and about 40 short of being home, the bus bellowed its final
breath and stranded us on the PA Turnpike. Some of us called spouses at
4AM, (I waited till 5 ) to come and help get bikes and bags - and us - back
to our start point. And I would do it all again. Even the bus breakdowns
were all part of a wacky, wonderful week of riding! The people I rode with
and met during the week, both on the road and in all the towns, were
friendly and accommodating, ready with a tale of their days ride, or with
info on what could be found around that nights town.

Thank You Iowa!

2015-07-27 Thread Rusty Click
Hi all,

Thought I'd update the group on my virginal RAGBRAI ride. These are some
pics of ride (to prove it happened). My Sam rode wonderfully, and I met a
few other Riv owners during the week. Shout outs to T. Gavin for his
advice, and the offer to ride some gravel (I'll add that to next years
list), and to Robert Baily, whose story I barely knew, but remember reading
about. I'm glad to have met him during this years ride. I hope to have a
trip report soon, but here (hopefully) are some photos.

The main driver for my travel to the DC area is a family visit. That
means I have a fairly constrained itinerary. My good friend Steve Butcher
(GravelDoc) and my son-in-law will be riding with me, and we'll be
comfortably spreading out the 185 miles over four days. We plan to camp
Tuesday and Thursday nights, but family will meet us in Sharpsburg for some
tourist time and a BB stay on Wednesday night. We'll be riding out of
Silver Spring, and family will shuttle us back from Cumberland on Friday
 evening.

If this is of interest to any of you, let me know here or by private
message and I'll provide more details. I'm hoping this will be another
opportunity to meet some of my friends face-to-face and share some time
awheel. In the meantime, I'll be trying to determine which Riv to bring
 along...

Any list members riding RAGBRAI this year? They (RAGBRAI) have called my

To anyone else on the list thinking of riding some, or all of the

[RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

My project will be a 650b conversion of my old, mid 80's Rockhopper, which
will soon be back in my garage after spending the last 11 years with a
co-worker.
I'd like to go with a wide-low front end with no FD, but everything else is
up in the air till I get my hands back on my old bike. I don't know what
width tires it'll accommodate either. When I see it, and start taking it
apart, I'll post a wish list of items needing attention, and would like any
feedback/advice on how to approach. I may take it to my favorite LBS,
Thick Bikes, for their input too. They have never nudged me in the wrong
direction.

Like Andy, my riding here in the Pittsburgh area is limited during the
winter. I think working on this is going to be a very fun learning
experience and I am really looking forward to it taking up some time. ( So
is my wife )

My project is a low trail, 650b wheeled, all-around bike made with a
lively tube set (versus sturdy for touring) with drop bars, center pull
brakes, generator hub, LED lighting. All on a budget recognizing the value

[RBW] Re: Stolen S. Hillborne reunited with owner

2014-09-12 Thread Rusty Click
Hi Andy,
First, I'd like to point out that this was not my Sam. The owner used the
local, bike centric social media to spread the word about his stolen S.
Hillborne.
Secondly, I agree that it takes a more sophisticated bike thief to
recognize the prize, and then have the means to defeat the defenses we
put on them. It wasn't a coincidence that this happened during the week
when urban planners from around N. America were in Pittsburgh to attend
the Pro Walk/Pro Bike Conference. More bike people--more nice bikes. I
wonder about the, arguably smart bike thief, then strolling into a well
known bike shop like Thick Bikes, and not expecting some raised eyebrows.
It will be interesting to get that info when it's out.

thief is that they are not discriminating, any bike will score them the
 same price.

Someone willing to fight better security of location and locking is a
bike-specific thief and those rings do move around regions to hit the
value, fill their till and move on before their pattern is clear to
enforcement. Info on the guy with Rusty Clicks Sam will be interesting to

 Simple answer: No.

An angle grinder will cut through any u-lock pretty quickly. You can see
videos on youtube of how fast it is. I've seen a titanium lock -- Tigr IIRC
-- that will delay an angle grinder longer, but still isn't uncuttable. It
sounds like the recovered Sam had it's lock picked or else not latched

A very pleasant group I've ridden with every Tuesday, April through

decided to keep up the riding under the cover of darkness. It's become a
celebration of generator hubs and LED headlights. We gather at Tazza d'oro
coffee and head out for the highs and lows, enjoying the pretty vast
infrastructure available off the roadways where possible.

We wound our way through the Carnegie Mellon University campus, through a
dark Panther Hollow, along the jail trail and the Hot Metal Bridge (named
for the one-time cargo of the insulated railcars taking molten iron or
steel across the river to secondary mills) to the South Side. We picked a
reasonably desolate path up into the heights of Mount Washington and along
the non-view neighborhoods and then crossed the summit line to Grandview
Avenue to enjoy the proceeds of our work.

Mount Washington had coal seams that were mined horizontally with some
opening on the face overlooking town. Chutes delivered it to the riverbank
for a simple barge trip to the fires of the steel industry up and down the
rivers. Hell with the lid off James Parton wrote in 1868. Certainly
different now. This place is now about education, medicine, and technology.
Other recent insights include the growing value of the waterfront *
mileage,* which had been avoided as the uncomfortable place where
industry was. Redevelopment has been managed to value those massive tracts
and many bikeway miles have been established along them. The Great
Allegheny Passage starts at the fountain in Point State Park and runs
upstream along the city side of Monongahela (*Mon*) River, crossing the
Hot Metal Bridge and continuing to the town of McKeesport where it picks up
the Youghiogheny (*Yock*) River along which it runs into the Allegheny
Mountains toward Cumberland, MD then Washington DC via the CO Canal
towpath; 325 miles. Too much for tonight.

We descended Sycamore Street (part of the old Thrift Drug Classic and The
 Dirty Dozenhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_Dozen_(bicycle_competition))
to Station Square, crossed the very decorative Smithfield Street Bridge to
downtown and the jail trail, and back to the start where several of us
retired around the corner for a pleasant post ride refreshment and
 conversation.

Nice to keep the positive vibe of the ride group going into dark part of
the year. Sure is a glowing plug for lighting, I know it takes little
provocation to spill praise for mine.

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/43029278@N07/sets/72157635839369194/

There are many, many miles of dirt road and snowmobile/ATV trails on the
way up there, some smooth, some rocky, but all fun. Even the paved roads
are nice. The scenery was gorgeous, and the leaves had begun to change
already, especially north of White River Junction. The small towns and
nice people in Vermont are the best.

The bike handled perfectly, and the only thing that rattled loose was my
mudflap(!) toward the end of the trip on a particularly bumpy section.
You may notice I only have one water bottle, but that's because I prefer
dromedary bags for carrying most of my water- the bottle is just a more
convenient vessel to drink from :)

This was my first fully loaded ride using moustache bars and the Nitto
Large back rack, which I bought from Riv a while ago-I had been using a
Tubus Cargo prior to this.I found the M-bars to be fantastic for
all-day riding. I had used them before for ~2 hour rides on my QB and
reckoned they'd be good for touring, but have always just stuck with
Noodles since I know they work well for me. This ride convinced me that
M-bars give plenty of hand positions for comfort and work well on bumpy
terrain when riding somewhat heavily loaded. You do need a short stem
 with M-bars though.

My only (minor) complaint about the Nitto rack is that platform is much
too far back behind the rear axle, and it is difficult to get weight far
enough forward with it due to the tombstone being so far back.Sliding
the mounting points forward at the top results in the rack tilting forward
at an odd angle. This is strange to me since I ride relatively large
frames, and most racks (especially non-adjustable ones) end up tilting
backward because of the steep angle of my seat-stays. The Nitto seems more
geared toward frames with ultra-short chainstays, or super-tall frames.
BUT it is still a ridiculously nice rack though, and I have like 5 inches
of heel clearance with it (size 10's) so if you have large feet/ heel
clearance issues with your rack it would be a good option.I may go back
to the Tubus for future loaded riding, as it seems ideally suited to frames
in my size in terms of where the platform is located.I also really like
an R14 with the large saddlesack when not riding with panniers.

Anyway hope you enjoy the photos.

 Matt

[RBW] Re: RBW values revisited, again.

2013-04-30 Thread Rusty Click
Andy,
Congrats on the new Rambouillet, and the cross country. I missed this
years annual Keg Ride while my Sam Hillborne sits at Thick Bikes, having
the rear wheel re-built. I didn't realize how much I relied on my Sam for
'getting out there', and, on monday, had to borrow a bike to guide a
visiting Bombadil owner from MD, from Homestead into the Point, and back.
I even told Ed, and his wife Ann, about the keg ride as we finished our
refreshment at their hotel.

Maybe it's time to amend the, 'one bike' mindset I've been fostering!

I am sure I was a boorish early adopter when Grant decided to make a

was looking for from the perspective of just having sold my '91 RB-1 to
finance a better-suited bike. Mostly I wanted the new Rambouillet to ride
cross country with a group to whom I had become committed. My wife has even
spoken to Grant regarding the whereabouts of my elusive Rambouillet. My
contingent alternative was my '92 XO-2 which was great but filled me with
questions and fear on each ride greater than thirty miles. My new orange
steed arrived the night before I left for Yorktown, VA to join my
colleagues for our west-bound national tour and it was so perfect I could
have been riding it for five years because of the ease of transition, the
fit, the ride, the comfort of living on it for ten to twelve hours a day
for a month and a half out of the box.

I revisited that immediate impression Saturday when I participated in my
neighborhood brewery's annual release of their Pedal Pale Ale and the
bicycle procession delivering it to it's first pubic servings. The annual
keg ride has become a springtime event on the do-list of riders of all ilk
and beer aficionados, capped this year at 650 riders.

What I realized as the keg trailer towing ride leaders first pulled out
was that my bike had slow speed stability that others did not and that I
could ride as others continued to walk, just as I did in NYC at the Five
Boros start. I was comfortable at all the speeds during this ride. It
reminded me of what first impressed me about this bike all those years ago.

It's looking a bit rougher (beausage, PAM?) and is certainly eclipsed in
brake reach and tire capacity by newer RBW offerings, but with a new set of
46/34 rings, a Superb Pro front derailleur from my drawer of goodies and a
NOS Suntour XC Pro short cage rear derailleur from fleabay it was like a
new chapter in the same great book was opening.

It's a great to have a good decision ratified once again, just thought I'd
 share.

[RBW] Re: RBW April S24O - My account (long with photos in the beginning...)

2013-04-30 Thread Rusty Click
Thanks for the great ride report, and the pics! I plan on being out in the
fall, and if the gods are smiling, my visit may overlap one of these
weekend rides.
At the very least, I'll stop by Riv HQ to ogle some bikes, and maybe even
borrow one for a ride around Walnut Creek.

 Hi all,

As Monday starts winding down, I keep reflecting on the adventure I lived
this past weekend when I participated in the RBW guided S24O in Mt. Diablo.
It was awesome, epic, hard, full of almost unbearable suffering and
indescribable satisfaction, all bundled together by a fantastic group of
people and the hosting and guidance of the RBW folk who put it together. It
is one thing to come to RBW to shop for stuff or ask for advice, and
another to have the chance to share an S24O with them.

The few photos I took are here, for those who don't care to read my
verbose account of the ride... http://tinyurl.com/clr2swl - just keep
 pressing the next button...

Keven was fantastic as the host/leader, and his care and warmth extended
to everyone and everything. He also makes quite a ruckus inside his tent at
night. He made sure no one needed anything, shared food and utensils (I
don't know what I would have done without his stake hammer) and then not
only brewed us some great coffee on Sunday when we were back at RBW, but
also showed us how to make a delicious heavenly heavy whipped cream.

Grant brought some wonderful and expensive cheeses that were the
centerpiece of the night, at least for those who weren't spammed by Manny.
Others brought some amazing salami that was shared by all.

Will and Sean were a lot of fun, and I got to meet Jenny for the first
time. Speaking of meeting people for the first time, especially people
you've heard so much about, I got to meet Manny! And to find a little gift
surprise on my bike on Sunday morning that came from him and made me
forgive him for lying about the return trip being all downhill with no
 climbs!

Got to meet some other great people for the first or second time and enjoy
 their company a lot.

We got started quite a bit after 4:00 PM in spite of Keven's dire e-mail
warning, and Grant officially opened up the expedition with a loud cowbell
ring. Right after a few words and the obligatory (RBW style) legal document
where we all signed we wouldn't sue RBW, the group got going through the
streets and trails of Walnut Creek and onto Mt. Diablo's North Gate.

By the time I crossed the North Gate with Keven, we were the very last of
the group. The sun was hot and as started climbing the six miles to the
Junction, it didn't help that we had a tail wind that was basically
neutralized by our slow velocity so it felt like there was no wind to cool
us down and only the hot sun cooking us. LIttle by little, as I inched
forward and Keven kept me company, we climbed until we found the slow group
taking a rest. The fast group I never saw again until I made it to the
campground after dark, but this slower group I'd meet once or twice more
but just couldn't keep up with them on the climbing.

The climbing... those six miles of climbing to the Junction are a
superfest of suffering and amazing views, especially as the sun starts to
set and it's just you, surrounded by golden fields of grass, a winding road
and the views of the valley below where you started. The first 1000 feet of
elevation I pedaled the entire way. Right before the elevation sign, the
road becomes quite steep for a section and it was the first time I found
Grant and the slower group resting. The second thousand feet of elevation
were a mix of pushing the bike and pedaling it, with more pushing than
pedaling... And it seems I would never stop climbing. Alone, pushing
upwards with few thoughts distracting you. I ran into a very nice lady who
was riding her bike up and then down, and who gave me words of
encouragement; plenty of roadies going back down most of whom hardly even
glanced my loaded bike and my non-lycra attire, and at some point the sun
set over the hills, the light was marvelous and I was too tired to pose the
bike to look for a shot.

By the time I finally made it to the Junction, I had run out of water (2
27oz bottles empty), was dry and was thinking that I'd be by myself and at
least now I could finally descend down to the campground. I was surprised
to see Grant, Keven and the rest of the slower group waiting, and after
filling my bottles with water and drinking some, I asked them how long had
they been waiting. Their response was just a few minutes, certainly no more
than 4 - 5, which was really a surprise for me. I hadn't been that far
behind all along, even though I though they would have crossed the Junction
and be down by camp already.

[RBW] Natchez Trace ride

2013-04-26 Thread Rusty Click
My friend Ed and I decided to stretch out of our S24O comfort zone, and
planned to ride the Natchez Trace, end to end. We were camping, but had
another friend willing to drive a support van for us, which ultimately
turned our ride from an ordeal, into a positive learning experience.

We had weather delays, and ambitious mileage goals that caused us to
shorten up to 300 out of 444 possible miles. We learned a great deal about
camping, cooking, packing, and realistic miles per day, when on non
rail-trail road rides. Thank goodness for our support!

We met many wonderful people, including an Australian couple, and one of
their friends, who were on day 45 of an LA to New Orleans, up the
Underground Railroad route to Niagra Falls, and then down the GAP trail,
ride to Washington Dulles airport.

My Hillborne rode great, but suffered a fractured rear rim, that wasn't
discovered till I returned home! Glad it didn't fail dramatically during
the ride.

Here (hopefully) are some pics

Hello Eric,

I'm also looking at putting the Lil Ben's on my Hillborne. Do they come
close to the advertised 700X38? I know the Schwalbe Greenguards I'm
running are closer to 35's.

BTW, that's a great looking set-up you have there!

Cheers,

They are definitely heavier than the Marathon Racers they replaced. Didn't
notice then being any slower. Could be that I'm not fast in the first
place. Didn't do any non-paved riding as it has been too wet. Was able to
ride with confience on the sides of the road where there is a lot of
gravel, sand and other detrius leftover from the winter. Quite a bit more
 confidence inspiring than the Racers.

Again, it's only one ride, and other folks may have entirely different
impressions of the tires. But I like 'em.

I'm leaving wednesday to ride the Natchez Trace Trail, and would appreciate
it if someone would talk Drew out of selling this great looking bike before
I get back. I'm very tempted to buy this, but agree with all who've

all-rounder for him.

Really, I don't want the temptation when I get back!

Best of luck Drew,

Alas, though, I need to do the fiscally responsible move and sell off my

Anyway, it's a sad day, but a necessary one. If you know anyone looking

A new batch of pins has been ordered and I was given a 4 week delivery

I have also sent the artwork for getting a quote on patches. Luckily they

After a bunch of research it looks like Bigcartel is the perfect solution
for handling the orders. THANK YOU Brian (Benedikt) for that suggestion!!

I am in the process of setting up the storefront and when the product

They may be slow, but only if you're doing this ride in 4 days. In that
case, speed might matter.

We've done this ride a handful of times, in both directions, and over
different time frames. I highly recommend it. You'll have a great time.
The scenery and history of the area is wonderful.
If you're not from the Pittsburgh area, and would like an escort to get you
and your group through the city maze and detours, and onto the main trail,
we would be glad to lead the way. We would be available after the 17th.(We
are riding the Katy Trail at the beginning of the month)

Have a Great Time!!,
