[RBW] Re: New look for rivbike.com and new News blog

2021-02-12 Thread 'islaysteve' via RBW Owners Bunch
I was a webmaster (of sorts) for a while, so I know how tough it can be to
redesign a page or site. Thanks for your work. I took a quick look
around the site just now. I don't mind the general look, but the search
function, in particular, needs looking at. I went to "Brakes" and searched
for brake shoes. It came back with a few products, including whole
brakes. I know that you carry Kool Stop shoes, because I just looked at
them recently. But no Kool Stop came back with the first search. When I
just searched "Kool Stop", I got the Kool Stop products. So this is not
good. I would prefer that there be subcategories, i.e. click on Brakes,
then get another menu for the various items people might search for
pertaining to Brakes. I hope these comments are helpful. Cheers, Steve

Just a note on cutting cable housing: If you already have a Dremel tool,
they work great to cut housing with a standard cutting wheel. Definitely
invest in a real cable cutter if you don't have one. Good luck on your

[RBW] Left the (Brooks) Fold for a Bit, but I'm Back Now

2020-09-28 Thread 'islaysteve' via RBW Owners Bunch
In an effort to (ahem) lighten my Bleriot a bit, I switched saddles. I'm
not trying to go faster, but I do carry the bike down and up a half-flight
of stairs for every ride, and a full flight to the basement for any
maintenance. I thought that the Brooks B-17, at over a pound, might be a
logical place to save weight. I got a Charge Spoon saddle after reading
some reviews. I had also asked for feedback on that saddle on this or the
iBob list and got a favorable response. The price was right and it weights
about half of what the Brooks weighs. So today I had my first and only
ride on it. It hurt my bones. Perhaps I could get used to it, but why
bother when I have a perfectly comfortable and beautiful B-17 honey? I
don't have much padding back there so maybe that's the problem. The Spoon
has a central channel and rather high firm ridges next to the channel.
Other people seem to like them; you know how individual saddle choice can
be. Anyway, it comes off tomorrow and I'll be glad to see the Brooks back
on the Bleriot. I'll keep the Spoon for the time being in case my kids
want to try it. If anyone is curious about what this saddle feels like,
get in touch with me and maybe we can work out a trial. Good riding, Steve

From my vague memory, kinda caramel maybe? Maybe with an area that had

 Unless PB2 repainted it.

Matt, Congratulations on your new Riv! If I was buying a new one right

your stem issue, lots of folks on here are more expert. I would just say,
don't be necessarily wed to the Noodles. There are lots of drop bars out
there, with lots of variation in depth and reach. Maybe you could
experiment with some from the co-op. As for tape, I've always found that
blue tape looks just great with an orange bike, you can find plenty of pix
of that combination around, especially on the Riv sites. I certainly
understand building on a budget. Best of luck to you!

Visit College Park Bicycle in (where else?), College Park, MD. They are a

[RBW] Re: Coffee grinders -- I **know** that this is NOT off topic!

2019-03-16 Thread 'islaysteve' via RBW Owners Bunch
Greetings Patrick and everyone, I'm not as much of a coffee enthusiast as
many here, but I'll offer my experiences and observations for what they're
worth.
Grinders: I've been using a Krups $50-$60 burr grinder for many years.
Got the original one from Bloomingdales, that one was replaced under
warranty several years into service and the current one is still going
strong. The upper burr is replaceable for a reasonable price. I like it
that I can start the grind, then leave it on the counter to change filters,
pour water, etc. Now I know it's not good for super fine grinding, for
espresso. That's fine with me. Those grinders seem to cost many times as
more. When i thought mine was on the blink a while back (it wasn't), I
found a similar one at Target for about $30. Not sure what the differences
were between my old one and this new generation.
Storing: I usually buy 2 lb. bags of beans at Costco or Safeway. I put
about a pound's worth, blended, into a semi-airtight container on the
counter and store the bags in the basement, rolled closed and rubber-banded
(no freezing). Seems to work fine and still make good coffee, Deacon's and
others' comments on freshness duly noted.
Coffee making: Water temp is important. If this has already been brought
up in the thread, I apologize. I finally splurged and treated myself to a
Technivorm drip coffee maker. Had wanted one for years. It brews to the
proper temp, I believe around 205 degree F. I also make pourovers for
myself regularly, using a $3 Melitta cone holder. (The Technivorm is fun
to watch.) Cheers and Happy St Patrick's Day to all, especially the
Patricks!

[RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2018-09-27 Thread islaysteve
I guess I'd have to say Golden Age with qualifications. I was aware of Riv
in 1995 when I was re-awakening to cycling, but I was a roadie/weight
weenie then. I appreciated the beauty of Rivs and Waterfords, but the
price absolutely put them beyond my reach. I ended up with a Performance
lugged steel, 105-equipped road bike, later traded up to a Ti frame of same
brand, and was happy as a clam for several years. I became re-aware (is a
word, no?) of Riv around 2010. I embraced most of the Riv philosophy and
soon fell in love with Sam Hillbornes. Obsessed, lusted after one.
Thrilled when Velouria of Lovely Bicycle got one and wrote extensively
about it. Started falling a bit out of love as the prices for the Sam not
only increased, but became differentiated by size/country of manufacture.
I am small (50/51/52), and felt penalized because those were made by
Waterford and therefore more expensive. I still believe that this was a
poor decision by Riv, but whatever. My ever-supportive wife gave the green
light to a Sam frame in late 2010 despite the high cost. I looked to eBay
to see if I could get a break. I almost bid on a Ram (in hindsight, I'm a
bit sorry that I didn't), but then found a 51 cm Bleriot. Perfect size but
I had never heard of a Bleriot. Quick research convinced me that this
could the one. Cut to the chase, I won the bit through deep pockets and a
bit of strategy. I had some financial leeway by then. Paid a bit more
than the original Bleriot retail, but still less than a new Sam. Got the
frame, loved it, built it up, and have been happily (if too infrequently)
riding it ever since. In reality, it is probably the perfect bike for me.

However, are we ever satisfied? Since I've been riding mostly on the road,
and mostly unladen, I thought it would be nice to build up a go-fast
again. Tried to do that with my Ti frame, even moving parts over from the
Bleriot to do a quickie 650b conversion, but no dice. I found that the Ti
frame, with it's higher bottom bracket, is not longer comfortable for me
(mounting/dismounting issues for an old man). So the Bleriot has spoiled
me and I'm not sorry. Lum's recent posting about finding his forever bike
in a Roadeo has me lusting for one. If I could trade, or afford one, I
would get a Roadeo. But then I wouldn't have the allround versatility of
the Bleriot. I still have a bit of weight-weeniness in me. I've
considered putting a lighter saddle on the Bleriot and thus making the one
cheap significant weight cut possible. Anyway, the is my longwinded answer
to the open-ended question. Thanks for asking. Cheers, Steve

Ray, Your post brings back memories of my days in the Boy Scouts. Our
troop was big into the Donner Party and the trail restoration. I'm sure
that we hiked through Emigrant Gap, but I can't remember any particulars.
Sounds like a nice ride. Steve

Thank you Reed and Grant, and all others who contributed, for making this
incredible resource available. I haven't read many Readers as I am
relatively new to the Rivendell family. I was aware of Riv in 1995, but
not the Readers. Yesterday I had some time away from home, so managed to
read some of #2 on my phone. Not the best way, but still possible. I
found the day-by-day journal piece to be particularlytelling? Anyway,
the index file sounds like it will be a great addition. I'm looking

[RBW] Re: Workstand clamping

2018-05-14 Thread islaysteve
I've been clamping onto the seat tubes of bikes for a number of years with
no bad effects. On my Park consumer stand, I used to put an old cotton
sock over each jaw, but now I've glued some soft leather to each of the
clamping surfaces. It works well. I also bought an inexpensive seat post
to use for clamping on my Riv (seatpost mounted is an old Aero type and
cannot clamp), but it's usually more of a PIA to install the clamping post
first. YMMV, of course.

[RBW] Re: New Journal Entry up at Analog Cycles: Disconnecting to get connected: A Journey in Satchidananda

2018-05-07 Thread islaysteve
James, The shop and county look amazing. I'm not surprised, considering
how nice the Frederick shop was. I'm sorry that I didn't as much time
there as I would have liked. Since you mentioned maple trees, I'm
wondering if you will brew Analog Maple Syrup. Anyway, best wishes for the
enterprise, and I hope to be able to visit someday. Please keep posting
your story and photos to this list! Cheers, Steve

2018-05-04 Thread islaysteve

I have the following items for sale. Prices do not include shipping.
Here’s the link to photos (I’ve allowed access, but please let me know if
it doesn’t work): https://photos.app.goo.gl/SPWpaY2y4Tsu5TwC7

Pearl Izumi cycling jacket, blue, size M. Single-layer wind jacket.
Several years old but little wear, other than the elastic is somewhat old.
One small pocket inside useable for keys. Reflective piping. Fits snug
like P-I tends to do. $20.

Zoic short sleeve cycling jersey, size L, grey. Quarter-zip. Nearly new,
worn a few times. One large and one small zippered pocket in rear. $20.

Dura Ace Brake shift levers, 8-speed. The original Shimano D-A brifters.
Good condition with very slight scuffing on front, hoods show normal wear.
Front cover name plates are faded, shown removed in photos but I will send
with brifters. New plates can be purchased on eBay. Note: These levers
will shift some but not all Shimano 8-speed groups. If interested, I can
provide further info. These go for much more on eBay, I’d rather pass them
on to list members. $45/pr.

Rivendell Hupe detachable rear bag support. If you are not familiar with
this item, please research to see how it works, info might still be up on
the Riv site. Note: Prone to scratching your frame. I have covered the
offending end with a plastic cap, but this is no guarantee that it will not
scratch. Use at your own (frame’s) risk. $10.

Delta fork mount. This is normally mounted to a pickup bed or similar
location. Shown on my Miata (Bleriot and Miata not included!). This is a
very strong version with loops in the levers to provide for a lock. The
mounting holes on this one have been enlarged slightly to accomodate the
mounting area on my car. If anything, this provides some flexibility for
mounting. $10.

Sea Sucker “Rear Wheel Strap”: This is a strong suction cup with a velcro
wheel strap to hold down a wheel; attaches to car body and is removable.
Similar to this one:
https://www.seasucker.com/collections/rack-accessories/products/rear-wheel-strap.

Works very well. This and the fork mount above were used to create a trunk
mount on my Miata. I no longer have that car so am passing the mounts
along. $35 for Sea Sucker (sells new for $55).

Or take all of the above for $99 plus shipping. PM me via this list, reply

shipping based on items and your zip code. Thanks for looking! Steve

[RBW] Re: WTB: Rivendell Poster

2018-02-20 Thread islaysteve
It's not likely that Rivendell will reissue this poster. You can read
about the artist and poster here: http://www.goines.net/index.html. The
Riv poster is #230 in Group 9. There is an exchange section where posters
are sold, and people also post their Wanted requests. I didn't see this
one listed. I thought that in the past the artist sold unsigned posters
for $175, signed for $350. I just scanned the site, didn't dig deeply into
it. I may have missed some information. You could also contact the artist
directly if you are really prepared to pay those prices. You could try
Riv, just in case they have any they are willing to sell. Sorry, mine is
not for sale! Good luck.

[RBW] Re: Sackville Banana Sax

2018-02-12 Thread islaysteve
Based on my experience with my old Banana Sack (made by Duluth pack), I'd
say you will be fine with your intended use. Mine will carry: an
innertube, tools in a pouch, wallet, light jacket and an Abus cable lock,
like Riv sells. If the lock is carried, it should go in first. Looking at
the pictures on the site, the new one may be a wee bit larger, so better
still. BTW, I modified mine to fasten the flap with shock cord very much
like the new Riv design. It is much more convenient than the single buckle
style of the old ones. Interesting that Riv went to the two straps
perpendicular for mounting. I can see that it will be easier to mount and
dismount than the old threaded-strap style. One of these days, I'll be
tempted to replace my old one with a new gray for my Bleriot. Cheers, Steve

Re: [RBW] Have a Sub 20lb Roadeo?

2018-02-10 Thread islaysteve
Funny, I was curious and so I spent a few minutes on the Waterford website
today. I quickly came to the conclusion that a "similar" lugged steel F/F
from Waterford starts very close in cost to the $2600 point and goes up
from there. So you have a choice: Buy a Rivendell (made by Waterford),
get the Riv look, ride, lugs, decals and color of your choice; or buy a
Waterford and get their look, etc, with the choice to spend even more money
on fancier lugs, chrome, fancy paint, etc. Individual choice, no right or
wrong.

I'd love to see your Waterford when it's finished.
Cheers, Steve

[RBW] Re: What type of bike would make you buy another riv

2018-02-05 Thread islaysteve
I see where anonomous is coming from and think (he) has a point. There
is/would be/should be a market for the type of bike he describes: Riv
geometry, ride and utility without the lugs, paint, etc. But doesn't this
already exist? Check out Soma, frames for under $800. I'm assuming the
$800 reference in the post was for frame only. If for a whole bike, that's
a bit more of a challenge. And what of the Bleriot? It went for $750 not
so long ago, fully lugged, beautiful paint and extensive graphics. I'm
just putting out some of my observations, not saying what Riv should do.
Just saying that it's a direction they could go, with a lower entry level
and perhaps a different series name. And after all, Grant did design the
Soma San Marcos.

Erl, I put Orange seal into the tubes on the bike that I converted to 650b
for my daughter. Although she doesn't have a whole lot of road (outdoor)
miles on those wheels yet, she has had no flats. I was able to get tubes
with removable valve cores from Silver Exp. here in Kensington. I think
they had to get them from the other store. Inserting the OS wasn't much
trouble as I recall. I will see if I have the boxes or other indication of
the tube brand (I think they had long valve stems, but that didn't
matter). Cheers, Steve

[RBW] Re: Bike Trainer Thoughts

2018-01-02 Thread islaysteve
A few trainer thoughts, I''m not sure if any were already mentioned above.
Do yourself a big favor and don't buy a new trainer. I've bought 3 on
Craigslist for $35 to $40, they work perfectly well. The last 2 were
CycleOps magnetic, I gave one to my daughter. Look for metal construction
in the resistance unit, the less plastic the better. Ease of mounting and
removing the bike may be a consideration. My daughter's has a lever on the
axle mount which makes it easier to quickly remove the bike. Mine has
knobs that have to be screwed in and out. Yes, trainers are boring. I
listen to audiobooks on mine. Once you've tried your CL trainer for a
while, you may want another one with other features, or not. Or you may
just let it sit in the basement. Best of luck and Happy New Year!

[RBW] Re: Banana Sax Pics?

2017-12-22 Thread islaysteve
I have both a Sackville XS and an old Banana. Both are excellent.
Determining volume of the Banana is tricky, but IMO it holds a bit more
than the Sackville. Specifically, I can get my Abus cable lock (the one
Riv sells) fully within the Banana with room for lots of other stuff.
Also, the Banana is capable of some expansion via raising the flap and
securing at a higher level. On the other hand, the XS is very trim-looking
on the bike, super easy to access because of the rear zipper. They both
hold more than you'd think they would. Some of the pix show the Banana
mounted such that the opening faces pretty much rearward. I prefer mine
mounted more upright, and that is possible if you experiment with placement
of the mounting straps. I've thought of the Sackville XS as my Summer bag,
when I won't need to stash a jacket in there; Banana as Fall: discard
clothing items and carry them within. Hope this helps, Steve

[RBW] Re: End of the Trail Letter from IBEX

This is sad indeed. I'm fairly new to Ibex, bought El Fito knickers last
year and love them. Also have a pair of leg warmers. Yesterday I went
online to order a long sleeve medium weight top. The site wouldn't let me
complete the order, so I had to call. The customer service lady was super
nice and took care of my order. They currently have 40% off many (all?)
items, no returns. I hope that all of the employees come out OK, we will
miss them.

[RBW] Banana Bag Coming Back

2017-11-21 Thread islaysteve
I was glad to see that the Banana Bag is going to make a comeback in the
Sackville line:
https://www.rivbike.com/blogs/peeking-through-the-knothole/asst-mid-nov-notes-on-bike-gear-here-for-the-most-part-but-miscellaneous-things-will-creep-in

I also had to laugh as the new improved Banana includes a toggle closure
which similar to a mod that I did on my old Banana last year. The toggle
closure will make access to contents much easier (replaces a strap with
buckle). The bag is great and I was thinking that Riv really should bring
it back so that folks here wouldn't have to find a similar one elsewhere.
And of course there's always bagmatching. Will I buy one? Good
question
Reading the post about other changes to the line, I hope that the
Saddlesack XS doesn't go away. I love this bag--it's my primary since my
rides are mostly short and it carries everything I need. And it looks
great on the bike. Cheers,
Steve Alkire

Leah, I'm so happy to hear that your dog continues to do well. It's so
hard for us sometimes to know how our pets feel, but yours is giving you a
pretty clear message! Regarding your upcoming court date, I hope you're
not stressing too much over it. I'm not an attorney, but I did have a
chance to testify in a somewhat similar situation involving a motorcycle
accident which I witnessed. Thankfully no one was killed and the cyclist
was recovering. Although my testimony clearly helped one party, the
attorney for the other party did not attack me or question my competence in
any way. It was all quite civil. I would hope that your case is as open
and shut. As you say, the testimony of the other witness will hold even
more weight. I know that you will come out just fine and will continue to
be a great example to all of us. Keep the bus rolling, Steve

Bruce, I responded your request or info on the Old Man Petersen decal on
that thread. I have also fashioned a seat tube decal using self-stick
vinyl sheet cut into a diamond shape, with one of round RBW logo patches in
center. Looks quite good IMO, and is removable at any time with no damage
to the paint.

[RBW] Re: Roadinis could be arriving any day now?

2017-10-24 Thread islaysteve
So I guess that the Roadini is the new Bleriot, only, you know, not 650b.
I say this as a Bleriot owner. I took a good look at the photos on the Riv
site last night and it's a great-looking bike. Similar price point to
where the Bleriot was, and the blue color is even quite similar. I
personally think the Grilver is very nice, would choose that one. I'm sure
that the new owners will enjoy their Roadinis immensely and I look forward
to build photos. Cheers,

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for GPS computers?

Before I got a smartphone, I was looking into this question myself. As of
New Year of this year, I have a smartphone, so problem solved. I also use
Map My Ride, but there are other apps of course. If you don't have a
smartphone, you might want to look into it and do the dollars and cents
analysis vs. purchasing a single-purpose GPS unit.  Phones now do so much;
IMO it's totally worth it to take the plunge. Just having a decent camera
in your pocket (or Saddlesack XS) is practically worth it. YMMV, Steve

Glad to hear that the skewer worked for you Marc. I too have been using

too ideal. You may also know that other companies make security skewers.
One is Hexlox, which also makes some cool security devices for all of the
bolts on your bike. Cheers, Steve

[RBW] Re: Anyone have a sub-25lb. complete Rivendell?

2017-08-19 Thread islaysteve
Lum, My 51 Bleriot weighs 24 lbs without the V.O. rear rack that is
currently mounted. Build is drop bars, 8-spd 105 STI/brifters, no fenders,
VO wheels and Pari Motos. If I were to weight-weenie this bike the first
thing I would loose would be the Brooks saddle. It weighs over a lb. I
was quite comfortable for years on my road bike with a Performance
"Titanio" saddle weighing half of what the Brooks weighs. I'm sure that I
would be fine with other lightweight saddles, but of course it's a personal
thing. My weight-weenie dreams will have to wait until I get serious about
building up my Ti road frame again for a go-fast. Honestly, the way to
keep it light is to not carry stuff. But that sort of defeats the purpose
of a Riv, right? Cheers, Steve

A Dremel tool is a good investment and I'm always glad that I finally

[RBW] Re: Aging and Exercise

2017-06-22 Thread islaysteve
This is very interesting to me as I fall into the age category studied, and
my exercise level of right now could be classified as "sedentary." For
those of you who have not read the article, one conclusion is that the
"interval" training described seemed to be the most beneficial for our age
group. Since I have a bike set up on the trainer in the basement, I can
implement that plan immediately. That type of training could of course
also be done during an actual bike ride, even if it does go against "just
ride" ; ). Something to think about.

[RBW] Schrader OK? (Cross posted from iBob)

2017-02-09 Thread islaysteve
I'm converting my daughter's bike to 650b and bought a set of wheels from a
list member. They are drilled for Schrader valves, but one came with a
Presta adapter (or I lost the other one). Anyway, I also want try putting
Orange Seal in her tubes for flat protection, so obviously need removable
valve cores. It seems like the easiest thing to do is go ahead just use
Schrader tubes. Is there any downside to this? I can't think of one, but
I've only deal with Presta on my bikes for years and years now. Thanks in
advance, Steve

Well, Bill's review has really got me thinking about getting/making a strap
handle like the one Jeremy linked to. I don't commute, but do carry the bike
up/down half a flight for every ride, a full flight if I want to work on it in
the basement. The shop Jeremy linked to is "on break", so I'd have to find
another source. Seems like something Riv should sell, I bet the bag makers
could make them. Anyway, thanks Bill for the insight!

Thanks for the response, Paul. I do intend to get one, eventually. As you
say, it's a steep price for a bell, but a bell is increasingly important
for the riding that I do. I like the mounting flexibility that the
Spurcycle seems to have, I need to able to reach the bell. As for
packaging, I was just thinking about that yesterday regarding Apple. We
just got iPhones. Apple's packaging sort of makes you feel the way you
described. Marketing genius, I guess. I remember that one of our earlier
home computers came in a huge box that looked like a cow! Cheers,

you can see in the pic, they are starting to pull out. Hand-sewn eyelets
would probably be better. The shock cord can be adjusted for length (for
varying loads) by using barrel adjusters underneath. Good luck, and Happy
New Year to you and your family, Steve

Patrick, I don't know if this will be helpful, but I too performed a
bucklectomy on a Baggins bag, this one a Banana. I cut off the lower strap
(with buckle) and folded the upper strap up under the flap and secured it with
a brass screw and nut. The fastening is via elastic shock cord, similar to
what is used on some Rando bags. Hope this photo is clear enough, I will be

I understand the need to make it functional as well! I am so much happier with

Re: [RBW] Rivendell Goat Gloves

2016-11-28 Thread islaysteve
Leah, I've lately been trying some cold (or cool) weather riding and what I've
found to be surprisingly nice and versatile are my dress leather gloves, left
over fom when I actually went to work. They are soft leather, lined with
cashmere. From Bloomindales. (I know, but they were on sale after the
holidays.). Anyway, they are good at least down to 40 degrees, and probably
lower. They are not tight, and I think the extra airspace helps insulate.
Leather blocks the wind. Perhaps you already have something similar around.
Just my 2 cents. Cheers, Steve

[RBW] Re: Just ride!

2016-11-24 Thread islaysteve
Michael, I agree with you 100% about the trainer vs the outdoors. But. There
are and will be times, even here in temperate Maryland, that I just will not
get out there on the bike. Maybe not even outfor a walk. So for about 10 min
of my time, I can get some beneficial exercise, then get on to other things.
To that end, I've tried to configure my dedicated trainer bike, and the space
it's in, to be as comfortable as possible. YMMV, of course. Happy
Thanksgiving, Steve

You can also take a look at Velo Orange's Constructuer front rack, which
attaches to the eyelets on the fork tips ( I assume the SM has them). I
have the rear rack and it is very nice. Have fun with the build!
