[RBW] Re: Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

2016-03-19 Thread Michael Hechmer
Cecily, I am very happy to read that you are riding again. Yea! I'm not a
chica worrior but my wife, Patricia is. She has tried many saddles.
Probably dislikes the Terry & B17 the least. Her complaint was not about
her buns but the lady parts. I was especially motivated to help her solve
this problem and we tried lots of reach, height, and saddle combos. Many
brought some improvement. Then one day our parked tandem fell over and
after we restarted riding we discovered that her saddle had been knocked
5-10 degrees to the right. I offered to fix it but she told me it was even
better than OK. She has been riding with an off centered saddle ever since,

I've had the frame and fork pin striped and detailed by a family member.
Haven't built it yet so, it's still in the box. We're planning a May trip
that will include a stop at RBW-WHQ where we'll have it properly
christened! I'm going to have RBW chase & face + install the headset. I
have the new wheel-set built and many of the other parts are from my
previous Ram that will find their way onto the new steed. Since I have the
Surly for go anywhere/anytime duty, the plan is to build the Ram as
a light-ish road bike.

Re: [RBW] Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

If your "sensitive areas" hurt after riding, consider one of the
saddles with a split so that sensitive areas don't touch the saddle.

I don't ride Brooks saddles for that reason. Brooks saddles work very
well for a lot of riders, but for me, they are impossible.

[RBW] Handlebar 'clicking' with shim

2016-03-19 Thread Zed Martinez
Just to pick the minds of y'all wonderful people. I'm trying Bosco regulars
on my Clem after a rough winter of strong headwinds proving the albastaches
and my wrists weren't getting along when used on the Clem. I already had a
100mm Technomic Deluxe around I'd use with the albas on a different build,
so, I just opted to use that with a shim for the Boscos. Fit is fine, and
it clamps perfectly fine (not getting any bar rotation even with the Boscos
leverage). Only problem, if you can call it that, is leaning weight on the
very ends of the bars will cause a faint clicking sound at the clamp in the
cooler weather, I'm guessing because of the shim sandwich. Anyone know any
ways to mitigate that short of a different stem? The bars are quite built
up and it'd be really annoying tearing them down just to fix a clicking.
Would maybe a drop or two of something from Loctite's catalog help you
think?

[RBW] Re: Handlebar 'clicking' with shim

2016-03-19 Thread David Banzer
Hi Zed,
Not what you're asking, but I'd get a 25.4mm stem. I really don't care for
shimming handlebars and would rather get the appropriate clamp size stem. I
think folks' use the Loctite trick for sleeved bars, which a shimmed Bosco
would be similar to.

[RBW] Re: CLEARCOAT o'er baremetal & why we don't do it anymore

2016-03-19 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch

As someone who once had a shop called the Iron Fish Trading Co. I sold a
lot of metal stuff in my day, and a lot of it was rusty and/or bare, which
added to the allure. I would agree with most here that it can be a cool
look, but in the end, paint is, and really should be, part of a bicycle
intended for any decent amount of use over time.

With sculptures, furniture, or various found objects, I would sometimes
just apply a coating of butcher's wax, sometimes clearcoat then apply the
wax over that to soften the reflective quality. Particularly if it was
intended for outdoors, I would let buyers know it would need to be
retreated fairly regularly or it would rust over time. I also applied
various patinas, which bond with the metal and create a new surface.

Some/most are actually a kind of oxidation or rust, which forms a
protective coat. The guy who runs our local glass factory blasted the paint
off his old Schwinn and applied a Japanese patina finish, forget the name,
but a basic rust brown. It looks kinda cool in person, though I think if he
had taken the paint off without blasting, the patina would have been more
variegated. If it were mine I would also probably apply some wax on top to
give it a bit more depth and luster. In case anyone plans this at home, you
generally also will want to apply something to *stop* the patina process,
even if it's just a water rinse...

In the end, for me, the raw metal look is just that--a look. And a
somewhat dated one at that. I am much more fond of a bicycle with a
beautiful new paint job, not too fancy (my Clementine in basic super gloss
black with minimal cream highlights comes to mind) or conversely one with
lots of beausage (a word that has itself fallen from favor somewhat) than
one with such a calculated look-at-me finish which chances are won't hold
up all that well. As someone who also built frames for a living (large
custom wooden frames for artworks, that is) which sometimes had to be
painted, I can confidently report that, as most here probably are aware,
painting any kind of frame takes a good deal of skill to do well. Done
properly, in many cases it can certainly enhance and/or highlight the skill
that went into the metal work or the wood work below.

[RBW] Can anyone suggest a good LBS in Spokane WA? particularly one that sells used bikes

2016-03-19 Thread RoadieRyan
Hi Group

My big bro has just moved from Seattle to Spokane and now is in position to
bike to work, in Seattle I can think of a number of places that sell used
bikes that I would trust but I don't know Spokane so any suggestions on
either:

A) just a good LBS for tune up, upgrades, sound advice and/or
B) a good place to buy used/refurbished bikes

in *The Lilac City *would be appreciated. If he were still local I could
probably refurb one for him myself but that 10 hour round trip in a car
puts a damper on that idea.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

I would try the Stampede Pass tires first, since you already know how the

Re: [RBW] Yepp Mini on Rivendell experiences?

2016-03-19 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Tony,
I checked the stem-mount adapter-- it requires 1 5/8" on the [threaded]
stem. That's a minimum amount, which would probably do fine on a
dirt-drop-style stem. On a tallux-style stem, the forward extension could
interfere with the mount, thus requiring one to raise the stem a little
more.

In any event, if you've got ~2 inches on free stem space, you'll probably
be fine.

Good luck! shoji

Re: [RBW] Exciting news from Velo Lumino: we now carry SP dynamo hubs

2016-03-19 Thread Avery Wilson
Overwhelmingly positive endorsement from me as well. Switched from a shimano
dynamo hub that had obvious resistance when turned on (vibration through
handlebar) and then just quit working within 100 miles. The SP is light-years
better than shimano. Seriously can't even tell when it's on, so I leave it on
all the time with an edelux ii and b tail light.

Re: [RBW] Re: CLEARCOAT o'er baremetal & why we don't do it anymore

2016-03-19 Thread Tim Gavin
The frame of my Schwinn KOM had numerous scratches and chips, and some were
starting to rust seriously. So, after adding some rack and fender eyelets,
I had it bead-blasted and powder coated clear (with a little sparkle) this
winter.

http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/Tim_Gavin/media/KOM/IMG_05861_zpsiigil83h.jpg.html

Iowa isn't particularly salty (except winter, when my aluminum fat bike
takes the abuse) and the KOM will stay full-fendered. So, I'll report how
the finish holds up. This job cost me only $150, so I'd be OK with getting
a new powdercoat in 5 years. Sparkle purple, maybe?

[RBW] Re: Handlebar 'clicking' with shim

2016-03-19 Thread Zed Martinez
David, I know. And someday, maybe. Next time the cables need replacing. Put
a lot of money on the card switching over to the Bosco cockpit as was (and
a month before my wedding, at that) just to keep things copacetic since
it's my daily commuter. Good stems aren't entirely cheap or easy to justify
when you already have a small collection of them. And then, the clicking
didn't set in until about a week after I'd got comfortable with everything
and finished building the bars out. So, now it's also just not worth
undoing the hours of wrapping and shellacking just to stop a small ticking
sound sometimes.

Lungimsam, everything's crack free. Just put it together a couple weeks
ago. The Boscos and the shim are brand new, the stem only has 8 months of
use on it from being new last year. Definitely think it's just the metal
sandwich. Was worried about the grease too because of the shim, which is
why I was pondering maybe more of the Loctite 609 I picked up for the
seatpost after reading a different thread on here, or something similar
that'd fill the metal-on-metal contact but maybe also help lock it in
rather than the opposite.

[RBW] Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

2016-03-19 Thread Cecily Walker
Now that I'm riding my bike more (thanks, knee surgery!) I've noticed that
my Brooks B67S saddle isn't as comfortable as it used to be. Maybe it's
because I need to toughen up my tuchus more, but I can barely ride to work
comfortably, and it only takes me about 15 minutes to get to work on
average.

I've tried tilting the saddle up and tilting it down, but no matter what I
try, my sit bones ander...sensitive areas really hurt after a few
minutes. Chica warriors, have any of you ever experienced this? Is a
different Brooks model the answer? I ride upright and have Bosco bars on my
Betty Foy. I'm also a heavyweight, so I'm skeptical about riding around
town (or anywhere) on a saddle that isn't sprung.

Thanks for the help!

Re: [RBW] New Derailleur suggestions, old derailleur questions

2016-03-19 Thread Patrick Moore
Drew: regarding chain drag: Is you chain set up to proper length? One good
test is to place the chain on big/big and still have enough slack that the
derailleur cage is not pulled tight. Remove any more chain than is needed
for this.

Next, is the B screw that tightens the entire derailleur body against the
hangar as far in as it should be? Halfway is good, you can get by usually
with all the way; I've installed extra long screws to rotate the derailleur
even further counter clockwise

If both 1 and 2 above are true, you have 3 options: get a longer cage; get
a hangar extender (I think these are available); or simply avoid using the
granny with any except the larger cogs -- this is my solution of preference.

I've used short cage road rds with mountain bike triples with no problem as
long as I use the granny only with the 3 or so largest cogs.

As to 8 speed friction rds, just about anything I've used works fine,
though I found that the best ever was a road (short cage) Microshift, the
second best a reverse pull LX; that old Shimanos seem to shift better than
old long cage SunTours like the VGT; and that a rd's cog gap capacity
depends a great deal on the length of the derailleur hangar -- some are
much longer than others. (I used a 8 sp Utegra rd on a 14-32 7 speed with
48/38/24 rings, on a mountain bike, but have had a Shimano rd jam on a 32 t
cog on a Trek 400 Elance with just a single ring.

If Rivendell sells the Altus for wide range gear systems, I expect it will
work very well.

see that you have the ability to Reply, meaning put a post on the message

Just open a new tab and type in: groups.google.com and see what you think.

[RBW] CLEARCOAT o'er baremetal & why we don't do it anymore

2016-03-19 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
I am not fluent here and tried to respond to other comments about it, then
gave up and thought I could do it here & this way...wondering all the while
whether this is what "thread thwacking" is. Anyway, this isn't the last
word on it, just our experience and observations.

It looks best and the way you want it to look if the frame is not blasted
after building. Then you get the fire marks and general variegation that
gets the blood flowing. If the frame is blasted after building and you
clear coat over that, it looks like boring metallic gray with some
brass-colored pinstriping (if lugs). Nobody will say *hey, cool;* they'll
just think, *hey, kinda boring*.

Clear coat is porous, which means water gets thru it and causes rust. We
had a local powder coater assure us that it had an ultranew and
supereffective way to protect the metal from rust, but it didn't work.
Inland bikes, no big problem, but if you live in a sugar shack on
Chesapeake Bay, it won't last.

Powder coating, wet painting, no matter. Powder coating isn't the
"bulletproof, no-nonsense, thanks for not making me have to think about
anything" solution it is sometimes portrayed as. It was developed for thick
steel tractors, as a durable, chip-resistant layer. The proble, besides
being pourous, is that with powder there is no primer to help fight rust
and protect the metal when it does chip. And powder coatings tends to have
more micro-cracks than wet paint. When the paint is opaque, it's easy to
assume all's well underneath, but when it's clear, you can actually see
what's happening.

If clear-coating was a GREAT idea, we'd offer it. It's used on show bikes
sometimes as a novelty and to show how great the metal looks, but if the
air is humid or salty or it rains a lot or something like that, it's not
fantastic...in our experience here, at least.

[RBW] WTB Velo Orange Campagne

2016-03-19 Thread Frank Conway
I've been lusting after the GB25's but come to accept that I should spend the
money updating some of the other stuff on my newly acquired Heron. As such, I
decided to take the cheaper road and see if anyone has a used VO Campagne (I'd
also be interested in the decaleur as well) that they are looking to part with.

I'd consider similar bags as well but as used GB25 or Acorn is probably out of
my price range (although it can't hurt to throw a price at me, I suppose).

Thanks,

Frank

[RBW] Powdercoating recommendations

2016-03-19 Thread Michael Hechmer
Somewhat off topic but I do need advice.

In prepping our tandem for next weeks trip to the Outer Banks of NC I
discovered significant paint damage & visible rust on the underside of the
frame. We have loved everything about this frame except the paint job.
Last Fall I looked into returning it to Bilenky and having it
powdercoated. The frame has 3 pairs of S couplers which add to the cost.
If I remember correctly he quoted $525, plus tax and shipping. I flinched
and decided to deal with the visible scratches through some touch up paint,
but somehow failed to turn the bike over, which is not so easy with a
large, steel, touring bike in any case. Now I can see damage that is
beyond me and a bottle of touch up paint.

So now I either need to find a reliable, alternative (and sacrifice the
decals & head badge) or bit the bullet and return it to Bilenky. And I'd
like to act as soon as we return (4/3). If others have had experience with
this, especially in NE, or nearby. I see one outfit in MI, which will do
the job for $265.

Michael

[RBW] Re: Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

2016-03-19 Thread Liesl
Hey Cecily! Good to hear from you! I too haven't posted in a long while and
barely kept up with my list reading. But when I see a call out to Riv Chicas, I
gotta do my part!

I echoe all the comments about tilt of saddle, height of saddle, and bar
position. All quite subtle. I might add that all of my B17s feel different. I
have one that's consistently the most comfy. If you have a LBS that will let
you try a few saddles, especially the cambium carved or a flyer, you might find
out a lot. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Yours in solidarity,

[RBW] Exciting news from Velo Lumino: we now carry SP dynamo hubs

2016-03-19 Thread Anton Tutter
I'm excited to announce that Velo Lumino is expanding their product
offerings in integrated lighting solutions. We are now selling the entire
line of SP dynamo hubs. These are turning into fantastic little hubs. I now
have two for personal use, one on my Bike Friday with 20" wheels, and one
on my Rawland Stag with 650B wheels. Both have been performing flawlessly.

I am carrying the entire 2016 line of dynamos, including the all new SV-9
series, which is the smallest and lightest 6V/2.4W hub dynamo in the world
(smaller and lighter than the SONdelux).

More info on velolumino.com
 and on
sp-dynamo.com

And, enjoy free shipping on SP dynamo hubs anywhere in the world!

Of course, we also have stock of all our existing Velo Lumino lighting
components: the AT fender taillight, the TMAT stem switch and the AT
headlight mount. And coming soon will be a new fender-related widget,
which I'll announce shortly.

[RBW] Re: Any good wheel builders in DC metro?

2016-03-19 Thread Kevin Lindsey
Jeff -
I live in Alexandria and have had three or four wheels built by Bill Mould,
who can be found most days at the "Spokes, Etc." shop on Quaker Lane
(703-820-2200). The stuff he's built for me has been excellent, and his
prices are very reasonable; I've never had spokes adjusted by him, but I'm
certain he'd do a great job. Very pleasant person, to boot.
All the best,

[RBW] Unofficial Bike to Work Day

2016-03-19 Thread islaysteve
Since Metro is, on rather short notice, shut down system-wide for at least
24 hours, today is an unofficial and perhaps rare Bike to Work Day. There
are already tweets in the Post about it. I wish all of our local list
members good luck, no matter what means of transportation you use today.
But it's a beautiful day for riding, so I'm happy for Erl and the rest of
our friends who regularly ride to work. I hope you don't encounter too
many crazies out there. The Post has declared in an editorial that Metro
is now a national disgrace. Not much more to say, except take care and be
safe.

[RBW] Re: Can anyone suggest a good LBS in Spokane WA? particularly one that sells used bikes

2016-03-19 Thread John Speare
Used bikes: Cup of Cool Water or Bicycle Butler.

LBS: many good shops -- good people. But shops here tend to be fairly
performance oriented and focused on big 3 brands -- we really need a solid
commuter/family (think Free Range Bikes or C) shop here. In any case,
good LBS recommendation depends on which part of town he's in. PM me for
more details.

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

2016-03-19 Thread Linda G
My theory (supported by some reading I've done) is that the muscles in the
butt build up from riding, making for less soreness over the "sit bones"
with time. I have a B17S on my Rivish bike and have found it to be
comfortable from the start for the sit bones but I had to get the tilt and
setback just right for comfort in other areas. I briefly tried a Terry
women's touring saddle before the Brooks and my sit bones hurt like crazy
no matter what I did. Now I have a new bike and since I already had the
Terry saddle, I put it on. No sit bone discomfort at all. Both bikes have
handlebars an inch or two above seat height. I had been riding regularly
since I first put the Terry on the Rivish bike so I think I had just built
up some muscles. So my advice is to play with the saddle adjustment. Maybe
it got out of whack while you were not riding. Then just give it a try for
awhile as you build your muscles back up.

[RBW] The next Velo Lumino product: rear fender reinforcement plate

2016-03-19 Thread Anton Tutter
Velo Lumino is expanding into the "fender installation widget" space. The
first of several widgets in this category is a reinforcement plate inspired
by the old French constructeurs. It reduces fender stress fatigue at a
common failure location by reducing localized stress risers. And it looks
damn fine while doing it. Photo below is on a VO Zeppelin 650B fender. The
plate is thin enough (0.64mm) that is doesn't noticeably alter the fender
line of existing fender installations, and its shape can be tweaked by hand
to follow different fender contours.

It's cut from aluminum sheet stock using water jet technology. It's then
pressed onto a curved form to create a nominal fender cross-section radius
and finally it's machine polished to a mirror finish. Two flat-head
stainless M3 bolts with flat washers, star washers, nuts and a leather
washer for the bridge are included in the price.

$17 on velolumino.com

Anton, who is working on yet more fender installation widgets...

[RBW] WTT: 170mm Sugino XD2 for 170mm Specialized Flag or Suntour XC cranks

2016-03-19 Thread Sofia Torres
I have Sugino XD2 170mm crank arms that I'd like to trade for something a
little more vintage mtb-y.

I'm looking for the Specialized Flag cranks or Suntour XC (Comp, Pro)
Ideally no longer than 170mm. Must be silver, 170mm. Running a single ring,
so don't care if it's a double or triple.

http://mombat.org/StumpTeamCrank.JPG

My XD2 is a triple currently set up as a compact double, with 38 and 24T
rings in the two inner positions. Willing to sell outright if there is
interest... $75. But ideally I'll find a trade or a replacement crank
first.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: New Derailleur suggestions, old derailleur questions

2016-03-19 Thread JohnS

Hello Drew,

Maybe the problem isn't the derailleur, but the triple crank? Ask you wife
if she ever uses the big chain ring. If she isn't then maybe removing the
granny and switching the other two chain rings might be a better solution.
Maybe replacing the 52 with a 44 or 46 and the middle ring with a 38. I
don't know what kind of range and overlap that provides, but some creative
thinking could produce a workable solution.

Good luck,
John

[RBW] Re: Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

2016-03-19 Thread John Phillips
Hi Cecily,

Just a thought, but what tires are you riding? My wife thought her
Brooks B67s was too hard until I switched her Betty Foy over to a pair of
26" Compass Bicycles' tires.

The same worked for me on my Hunqapillar. After I put on a pair of Barlow
Pass tires, my favorite saddle is a Berthoud Mente.

For us, it wasn't our saddles causing us pain, but rather the bumps and
road buzz from our rather poor city roads.

YMMV,

John

Re: [RBW] Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

2016-03-19 Thread Lungimsam
I suggest you proofhide it. Leave it on overnight, polish it off with a towel
in the morning.

I had a sprung Brooks flyer saddle that was great outta the box. Started
hurting my left sit bone after 500 miles or so.
I proofhided it, especially focussing on the side that hurt. Stopped hurting me
after that.
Still confy today.

It did get wonky again later (~200miles) and my privates started to feel the
pressure. I tightened it one full turn (1/2 turn at a time over a couple days,
I think) and liberally over proofhided each time. Back to being fine again.

An RBW employee said that Brooks saddles are wonky and get wonkier later.

Sometimes juat giving them time helps work out the kinks. I think its because
the leather must always be changing though 99% of the time Ive found them to he
fantastic saddles!

I hope this helps and you get comfy again. I know how frustrating It can be
trying to eliminate pain problems on a bike.

[RBW] Re: Handlebar 'clicking' with shim

2016-03-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
If it were me, the first thing I would do is make sure the Nitto Shims are
not touching each other. The nitto 25.4 to 26.0 shims are two
half-circles. There's a tiny gap between them. Try to have them set up
such that it is a tiny half-gap on both sides. The second thing I would do
is make sure that one of those two half-gaps lines up with the gap of the
stem. Then tighten everything up and see if you have quieted your issue.

If that does not quiet your issue, I would use a thin thin coat of grease
between bar and shim. I would only use grease between shim and stem if
everything up to that point has failed. I would not use loctite in this
application.

Nice. Joel's on my short list if I ever decide to get a custom.

[RBW] Re: MIESHA HAS LEFT RIVENDELL

2016-03-19 Thread murphyjrfk
This post seems to be sticking around. So I might as well add to it...back
in 2010...maybe 2009 whatever...I was hit pretty hard by the "Great
Recession" and at Christmas time things were really tight. So it was just
a kids kind of deal. I had always admired/loved Riv but could never afford
one. My wife--girlfriend at the time--called Riv to see if Grant would
sign a Christmas card...she spoke to Miesha about it and as my wife tells
me she was happy and as helpful as can be--over the years I've talked to
her on the phone, and it was true--any ways, we couldn't afford anything
really but Miesha told her just order something small, I'll make it happen.

Well sure enough she did. Grant was super gracious about it too. He not
only wrote out a little card but put in a hat to boot. It was a supper
nice touch in a not so nice time.--mind you at that point I had probably
spent pennies there.

Things changed...as they always seem to do and I cherish the Riv's I have
(they are magical bikes). I always try and order a few times a
year...especially if they seem in a pinch.

For whatever it's worth she was top notch. And so is Riv. You can't beat
their graciousness about things especially when they don't have to be.

Re: [RBW] Re: Orange 58cm Rambouillets Is this a Mythical Beast?

2016-03-19 Thread Hugh Smitham
Yup. This one I have seen and a beauty too. I reached out and asked whether
he was interested in selling just the F/F/HS but he wants to sell it as a
complete, which I completely understand. At the moment I'm reluctant to buy
as a whole and sell off the parts. It's a hassle. Thanks for the heads up.

Re: [RBW] Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

2016-03-19 Thread Joe Bernard
I'll second Frederick's advice. "Fine for years" tells me you've worn through
its usefulness. The discomfort you describe is exactly my experience on cushy
plastic saddles that are supposed to be "comfortable": 15 minutes is all I can
do before they turn unbearable. I think your Brooks has hit the too soft stage.
