[Repeater-Builder] Doug Hall Voter - What Would One Pay.
Hi Guys, I am wondering what one would pay for a single Doug Hall voter module in good working condition? Be happy to get your replies directly. Regards Kevin.
RE: [Repeater-Builder] Doug Hall Voter - What Would One Pay.
Hi Mike, You did not buy my voter. I still have mine here. History - I brought one a couple of years back for a project in your repeater system Plan was to build 3 remote RX sites and feed it back to the main site (4th RX) and expand the coverage. However our MED (Your FCC) decided to charge for every repeater in the country, this included Amateur repeaters. So if I was to put the 3 remote sites and then have to add a TX to them to get back to the main site they would be required to pay. The group already had 7 repeaters and links, and as most will know getting money to fund repeaters is not easy. Power, rents (ours is good), repairs and now fees, the extra could not be justified. So the project went out the door. So I have been sitting on dead equipment (or money), so decided I would let it go and have someone else make use of it. It's a shame as it would of given more coverage on one freq. in the area. L And thinking now, I believe digital will be the way of the future, but I only wish it could be like the trunking systems, it is intelligent enough to do the switching as and when required to stay online when moving around. Re: Re:[Repeater-Builder] Tait T800 manual and software
Hi, Don't I now feel like a fool, I went to the tech site on Tait and found that they have everything but the T800 series 1. Personally I have 2x T800 S1 VHF repeaters (as well as T300 series and other Tait equipment), which I got the manuals and software so I could do my own programming. Also have the service manuals. So if there is a need for them I can send the PDF copies I have of them, just need to find them in my filing system. [Repeater-Builder] RLC-3 Controller Question - Related to all Repeater Types.
Hi All, I am in a situation that I need some advice on implimenting an access DTMF tone for you repeater. So far. We have installed a CTCSS tone on the RX of our repeater, and have been asked How does one access it if they don't have CTCSS onboard? Should mentioned the repeater is open, the CTCSS is just to stop the intermittent interference we get from either a garage door opener or home digital TV transmitter. Anyway back to my problem. I am running a RLC-3 controller (6 ports) and I would like to add a feature that would allow someone with a DTMF keypad to enter a tone, like a long-0 or 0-0? Idea would be then for the controller to stay active in COS for around 1 min after the tail drops. Don't want them having to enter the access tone too much, K.I.S.S. I do have the repeater setup for pre-access as it is part of a linked system, the main repeater is set for * then the access codes. I do have a little bit of code that might do the task, but I would like to see if there is any other ideas before I proceed too far into it, might even already be done? Look forward to any replies. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: 2 digis into 1 antenna
You can TX on both bands at the same time through a diplexer. It does not matter as long as you don't go over the rated Max power for the two. I have run 50watts on both bands through a diamond diplexer without any problems (was using two single band radios) This was then fed into a dual-band diamond antenna. Easy way to get up and running. [Repeater-Builder] Use of GM300 for Telementry at Repeater
Hi Guys, I am in the process of building a telementry logger for our repeater, using a POCSAG encoder into a GM300. I have gotten the connections coming in from the rear 16 pin socket. Radio is a 8 Ch, but will most likely only be programmed with 1 Ch. Still got to program the Telementry freq into the radio. I do not have a scope or analiser to check the audio out, and going to roughly set it up by ear. So far the audio sounds hot, too high. I do not have a service manual so ask where do I look for the adjustments? Better mention that the pins I am using are 3 - PTT, 5-POCSAG input, 7-Ground, and 10-12volts. These are the 4 connections the POCSAG encoder instructions said to hook up. Pins 15 and 16 are tied together for the speaker, not that it is going to be used. Also on the standard connector that came with the GM300 pins 7 and 9 were jumpered together, however I had to pull pin 7 so I could use the ground encoder. Any help would be grateful. Kevin.
[Repeater-Builder] Slightly OT - Motorola GP328 Disasemble Help
Hi All, Sorry for asking this group, but I know there is a heap of knowledgible people on this group. Right I have a GP328 standard H/H (not the plus model, which is smaller) The front case got damaged and I got a replacement front to make the radio usable again. I have been able to remove the guts from the old one but I am having problems getting the external mic part off of it. I took the black coated piece off, destroyed it actually but I can not seem to get the main connector strip off. Without doing too much damage is there any tips on removing it. I see I have to lift it somehow to be able to get it through the slot in the front case. Speaker and mic are free. Now back to repeaters Thanks Kevin, ZL1KFM.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Anyone got a Amp-meter Circuit to Repeater Controller for Telementry Readback?
Ed and Others Thanks for your ideas and thoughts. The solar cells have a small regulator in line to the batteries, then batteries to repeater system. We do have mains to the site but this is only for requirements when there is heavy usage and the voltage gets down. The controller will switch to the mains. Kevin, are you using a charge controller between the solar panel, rpt, and batteries? Does your controller provide any kind of monitoring of current or voltage or state of charge? The op-amp circuits can also be extended in range beyond the VCC by using a voltage divider on each side of the input voltage. 1k 1% resistors are my fave for this divider type of app. Keeps the impedance low enough you can get good gain on the op amp with reasonable component values. You might want to consider some sort of outboard microcontroller based data logger. It could tell you how many charge hours you are getting, and peak amps, total amps, and at what time of day your batteries reach full charge and when the charge controller begins to dump excess voltage. This can let you know your batteries are doing through the days / nights. I built an APRS digipeater some years back that ran solar. Low power short burst tx, It would fail in late December due to lack of sunlight, and be fine otherwise throughout the year. Enjoy tinkering! Ed N3SDO

I agree with the other poster on using silver crimp-type connectors. I don't like the cheaper chrome/nickel plated crimp connectors. The threaded portions tend to flake when being screwed/unscrewed, which leads to odd results. I highly suggest attaching the cable to your mast/tower/whatever so it does not move in the wind. I also use automotive gasket maker under the crimp ring to help seal out the elements. It is connected to the groups repeater system of 2x 2mtr repeaters and one 70cm repeater. There have been some DX contacts through it as well as local and with pleasing results, both on quality, strength and distance. Equipment is 2x Mitrek Low-Band radios at split sites, TX is running 50 watts and using Wolf Dipoles for antennas. These are controlled by RLC-2a and RLC-3 controllers. It has voice and CW id's and Top-of-the-hour beacon Ident. It has taken far too long to get up and running, but it is now there. Would be interested once things improve (propergation) in what it operates like further away. Regards Kevin, ZL1KFM. Owner/Trustee. Get Skype and call me for free. sparc_nz Description: Binary data
Re: [Repeater-Builder] New 10mtr Repeater Active from Auckland, NZ (ZL Land) - Slightly OT
Hi Eric, In responce to your email. In NZ the regulary body (Govt) states that access to any Amateur Radio installion must be available to all access. What this means to us that we can only use carrier access, no tones like in a CTCSS system. Unlike in the US there are not that many repeater systems close by that would require some form of tone access to prevent interferance. In our case the closest 10mtr repeater on 29.64 is in Australia some 1200Kms away. Hope this helps explain why we can not use a tone. The short answer is Legal. Regards and Thanks Kevin, ZL1KFM. [Repeater-Builder] Diamond X510 Failure
HI All, After 15 years of faithful service our Diamond X510 dual-band RX antenna has failed. We started getting some noise and poor signal input to the 2mtr repeater. We had decided to check the 2x X510 antennas (1x TX and 1x RX). A couple of weeks ago the TX was checked and found to still be in fairly good condition, we did however solder the crimp joints. Today we pulled the top antenna down which runs the 2mtr RX and the 70cm repeater. Once we opened the antenna we found that it had come apart just above the bottom joint, and the very top of the element was split. Now we know why the RX had turned bad. No recovery for this antenna. We want to replace it with something that can be used for the 2mtr and 70cm repeaters. So far other then the antenna dual-band antennas there is nothing to replace it with from a commercial type. But maybe there is something that could be used? There is a thought that maybe due to the lenght of the antenna and the winds we get up on the hill this has added to the damage. We are thinking to replace it with a Diamond X300 dual-band, a third shorter and a little less gain. Any thoughts on a replacement would be helpful, I will pass it onto the other trustees. Jim, Thank you for that information. I remembered a DMV I have with a freq reading on it. Anyway I pulled it out, and it was able to read Hz, and I was able to use it to set the CTCSS freq. It was bang on with the freq, as I compared it against one a setup with the NZ$1000+ gear I used at work, not bad for a NZ$200 DMV. (CHY 22, Chinese brand) Once again the group came to the rescue. It also will tell me the value of unknown capacitors and inductors, along with all the normal volt, ohm, current multimeter functions. I think the meter puts a known inductor across the unknown capacitor and counts the freq that it oscillates on to determine the capacitance. Likewise it places a known capacitor across an unknown inductor to count the osc freq and determine the value of the inductor, so the freq counter was necessary for those functions. I have used mine to tune a PL on freq when it was one of the variable type and it worked fine after the adjustment, so I know it is reasonably accurate. 73 - Jim W5ZIT --- On Sat, 7/19/08, Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From: Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Repeater-Builder] Getting a Freq Counter to Read Lower To: Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com Date: Saturday, July 19, 2008, 4:16 AM Hi All, I have a Optoelectronics Handi-Counter Model 2300. [Repeater-Builder] Need a Switching Curcuit for AC/Battery Power
Hi, I have a need for switching AC and Battery power at our repeater site. Current setup is mains 230v AC and 12v Battery charging via solar cells. Due to the increasing chargers for mains (and still going up) we want to utilise battery power more and use the mains for back-up and when the batteries drop below 11v. The mains is connected to a power supply at 13.8v, this is in parallel with the batteries. I had built a small switching curcuit with 2x relays. One relay has the AC inline so the mains power supply can be turned off by the controller remotely or by the scheduler. The second relay was triggered by the AC line so that if the mains went off it would tell the controller which would then switch the repeater to low power mode, timers etc. The problem with the way I had set it up was that when the mains was switched off, even with a solid 12+v on the battery the relay would click continusally because the controller for some reason would see a low voltage and switch the mains relay back on. When the volts was back up to the 13.8v the mains relay would switch off again, back to battery power. I may be pulling straws here in what is actualy happening. I have tried to remendy the problem, and had it working for awhile, but it then started doing it again. I woud like some suggestions on what way to go? Should mention I am using a RLC-3 controlling the repeater and ower requirements. Thanks Kevin. Get Skype and call me for free. sparc_nz Description: Binary data

[Repeater-Builder] Mitrek question
To Mike and Others, First of all thanks for your information in getting my 10Mtr Mitrek running. I followed all the information, especially from Mikes excellent write up. I have since been up to install the TX radio at the repeater site and checked everything was working. It all appeared to be working as it should, first checking the TX using the local mic, as if a normal radio, and got great reports, audio was excellent, and those listening could not fault it. I was a happy man. I then plugged the repeater controller into the radio, in my case a RLC-3 from Link-Comm, which feeds into the Mitrek by pin 10, through a 10uF electrolitic capacitor and a 1K resistor (in series) to Pin 4 of the crystal element. Bypassing the mic pre-amp and pre-emph. I got nothing, well should say I got a very low tone (tone was a programmed tone from the controller I commanded), the PTT line was working. I tried to increase the audio out from the controller and was able to bring it up ever so slightly. I then removed the 1K resistor, still with very little improvement. I have now pulled the TX unit out agian and have it on my bench again to check. Lacking a good array of test equipment I will have to try and do my best until I can get back to work and distrub my radio tech and his workshop. Shoud make mention that I tried connecting it from one of the other ports that has good audio, and I still had athe audio problem. I am going through the manual again, but it appears the radio is working as it should due to the fact the mic audio was good. Any ideas in the right direction woud be a big help. I would like to get this project finished by Christmas. Regards and Thanks in advance. Kevin, ZL1KFM.

Most likely it is an open collector designed to pull a relay of no more than 150ma. These are very common. But his fan draws 400ma, and he doesn't want to use a relay. The answer is indeed the PNP transistor solution as outlined by me, and another poster. Very simple solution to a common problem. OK, I missed the will only accept a sink to ground of 150mA part. Without a source, my circuit won't work. Too bad the controller manufacturer didn't use a ULN2004, which can sink 500 mA on a single output. But this got me thinking: I looked at the output specs of the RLC4 sitting on my bench - 150 mA max. sink. However, looking at the schematic I see a UD2596A used as the output buffer. The datasheet for the UD2596A lists a recommended operating condition of 300 mA per output, or 500 mA absolute maximum rating. However, looking at the RLC4 board I see a UDN2597A installed in place of the 2596A it has a recommended output rating of 750 mA. So even though the controller is only rated for 150 mA output sink, it could easily switch 400 mA. You might want to take a closer look at your controller to see if any sort of buffer circuit is actually necessary. Bob NO6B sparc_nz Description: Binary data
Re: [Repeater-Builder] Transistor Switch - Further Information.
Just to update the queries regarding the sink I am looking for. I am using a Link-Comm RLC-3 controller. The information on the I/O switches say they switch to ground when on, and can only take 150mA or damage the onboard transistor. Checking the Fan current, I am pulling around 400mA, so do not want to take the chance and put it through the controller in case I do damage. Currently I have the hot side going to the + of the fans, and then have the transistor on the - line, controlled by the controller switching command. This will then of course make the circuit and the fan will come on. Taking the switch off will then cut the - line to ground. Extraction of the RLC-3 manual 'Open Collector output Lines When turned on, an open collector output gets connected to ground; when turned off it is an open circuit. The open collector output lines never output any voltage. The way they are commonly used is to connect one lead of the coil of a relay (or whatever else you want to control) to 12 volts and the other lead to an open collector output line. When the open collector output is turned on and applies a ground, the coil of the relay will be energized and will turn the relay on. The open collector output line can sink (apply a ground of) about 150 milliamps. Connecting an open collector output line directly to a power supply and turning it on will destroy the output driver. Make sure that whatever you are turning on and off draws less then 150mA.' I hope this helps resolve my issue. Regards Kevin. Moving parts and contacts, yes, but a good one will outlast the fan, the small added current consumption and heat generation are usually not an issue, and it allows isolating the controller's circuitry completely from motor transients. It would be dumb these days to keep using carrier-operated relays or relay PTT switches, or ID-ers with rotating cams against a microswitch, but there are some applications in which hardware contacts solve more problems than they create. [Repeater-Builder] 2x RX's or 2x TX's on one Controller Port
Hi All, I am looking for a simple circuit that I could use to connect either 2x RX's or 2x TX's onto 1 port of my controller. Reason, I am dealing with a split site repeater. So I don't want to waste a port for half a system, that I could use for another use. I was then thinking about using the linking port to run the radio as required, and include a switch to switch in or out the radio. I am using a Link Comm RLC-3 controller, ports are nearly all filled up, that's why I am trying to save the port. Radio A (Link) RX --- Radio A (Link) TX | | |-Input to controller / Output from Controller | from site 1 from site 2| Radio B (1/2 split) RX--X--- X- Radio B (1/2 split) TX X = switch to switch out the Split site repeater. Can I ask for some views on this, and any circuit/s that may help, even if I only get the audio lines working, this would be a help. Regards Kevin. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Two CTCSS Tones out of One TX
Good idea, did not think about this option. This will serve our situation well. And will be an easy fix. Regards Kev. As has been pointed out, there are some problems with running two different PL tones at the same time, both on the TX and at the RX sites. It can be done, but it also can have some problems. Here is a thought, a possible solution to the problem. Run a single tone at the TX site, but selectable from 3 choices, say 100.0, 107.2, and 114.8. This can easily be done by diode switching on a Comm-Spec or similiar type encoder. At each RX site, have 2 decoders, one set to a common tone, maybe 100.0. When this PL is selected, both sites will be active. At site A, there will also be a parallel decoder on 107.2, and at site B there will be a parallel decoder on 114.8. So to run both sites, 100.0 is selected at the TX site. For site A only, run 107.2, and for site B only, run 114.8. This solution will cost a little more, but will be much easier to implement and keep running without problems, using any type of decoder. Joe __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] Battery Back-up Question
Hi Doug, The battery is made up of 6x 2 volt cells. Each cell is large, can be lifted by one person, but not easy or light. (Talking from lifting them myself) Each cell is about 400mm high, 200mm wide, and 130mm deep. They have 2 positive and 2 negative terminals. The casing is heavy clear plastic, so one can see through into the cell for the level. On top are 2 venting caps. When all the cells are put together, they make a fairly large(long) battery. What I was working on, if it can run for 460amps for 10hrs, then 460a * 10hrs = 4600/10a = 460hrs. Calculation was way out. Thanks to everyone who provided help. The real test will be a real test, but if I can even get 80-100 hrs, I would be happy. Where I'm headed with this is I'm trying to ascertain if your cells are truly rated at 460 amperes for a 10 hour duration or whether it's actually 460 ampere-hours (amps multiplied by the number of discharge hours) which is common for industrial cells in the US. If truly *460 amperes for 10 hours* then your cells are capable of 4600 ampere-hours or 460 amps continuously for 10 hours. If *460 ampere-hours at a ten hour rate* then you're looking at 46 amps over 10 hours. Aconsiderable difference. (The physical size of the cell will hint as to which is correct.) The other caveat is that the longer the discharge time (generally) the more effective ampere-hours that a cell will deliver before it is discharged. If the cell is truly rated at *460 amperes for 10 hours* then you're looking at well over 460 hours at a ten amp continuous load. If rated as *460 ampere-hours at a ten hour rate* then 46 hours at a ten amp continuous load. As mentioned in an earlier post, the true load will play a factor. Re: [Repeater-Builder] CTCSS or DCS
Hi Guys, Thanks for the advise so far. I have just been up to the repeater site today, and have tightened up the squelch some so it does not open so easy. The offending signal is still there, and I can hear it on the input of my mobile radio. For information, here in New Zealand we have a Gov. Radio Frequency dept, however with the recent changes in how they now work, we (Hams) have to do 99% of the work, to track down the offender. Once we have the information, we can forward it to them to process. It can be easier to try and clean it up with CTCSS, change frequency, or remove completely(not an option). With the lack of equipment to track this down, will just have to see what happens, and just try and stop it from getting into our RX. The signal from the link TX, is strong enough to over-ride the interference, and give as a clean link. Good old FM capture effect. Regards Kevin, ZL1KFM. - Original Message - From: Mark A. If the are now on the 2 meter band (below 148 MHz) they may or may not tune at 160 MHz... it depends on whether the center conductor can be adjusted that far by means of the tuning rod. If you are actually referring to a duplexer (several interconnected cavities to allow use of a single antenna for transmitting and receiving) there may be other factors to consider. The cavities themselves may tune where you want them, but the length of the coaxial cables interconnecting the cavities may need to be optimized for that frequency to get best performance. The cavities may have more than one adjustment... if they are bandpass-bandreject cavities, there will be one adjustment for the length of the center conductor (usually a big knob / tuning rod) and another adjustment of some sort to set the frequency of the notch relative to the pass frequency. If you can tell us what specific cavities (or duplexer) you are looking at, some of us can probably provide more specific information. Paul Yahoo! Groups Links Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] Multiband antennas
This is my second attempt, first one was sent, but did not appear to be returned by the forum :( To Mike and Others, I am pleased to see someone put some information on a commercial diplexer for 2M and 70cm. I had a diamond diplexer, and work okay, but wanted better performance. I will look at the TXRX wed-site, and see what they have, and of course price. You did mention about building one, do you have information on the construction, and if possible the performance. Our group is using a Diamond X-500 at the top of the tower, and I want to run both the 2m RX (currently default) and the 70cm repeater off of it. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Low Power VHF (Ham) Radio
Thanks RSG, Your info will be of help, guess I will not go for the Rangr. Using 2 radios will increase power usage, and I need to keep this low, for portable use. As for freq. change, this of course would need the duplexer to be retuned for the freq. required, not that I believe it would be changed much. Just wanted something (radio) that could be changed if the portable repeater needed it. Maybe a close-by repeater had it's RX close to the portable TX freq. The main issue, is that the repeater TX must be low power, max 10 watts, most likely running around this value. Hope this tidies up my previous message. [Repeater-Builder] Tait T-300 series VHF Repeater - Information Required, Narrow filters inside, want to use standard diviation for Ham Use
Hi All, I recently acquired a Tait T-300 VHF repeater unit. Looking at using it in one of our repeater installations. Got everything working, and appeared to be putting out all the correct levels, power etc. However, after a few days, I was advised that the audio seemed to be low on the out put. I went up to the site and checked the audio going into the controller(RLC-3), and this seemed okay. Did not have a deviation meter, so was not able to check the output level, but by ear it sounded okay. Anyway it was still low. Brought the modules down, and opened the modules. This is when I found out that inside the filter had the markings "21F 7.5 D H", which I worked out to be 21.4 IF, and 7.5 deviation. I would like to know if I can somehow make it, so it can be used as one of our ham repeaters? If so, what do I have to do to make this work as needed? And any other info that might be of help? [Repeater-Builder] 2 Audios lines on one Link
Hi All, I need to link two RX's from one repeater site to two TX's at another repeater site. There is a UHF link between the 2, which was running the 2x 2m repeaters together. We would like to place the 10m TX at one of the sites, the RX at the other. I could put another UHF link up, but this would be a waste of a freq. So thought about putting the 2 audio lines down one Link. I need to know how to put the 2 audios into the TX, and then get it out at the RX??? Guess I would have to use some form of sub-freq. How do I get a COS from each line??? Any help would be grateful. Regards Kev. Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] 600 - 10k ohm Interface
Thanks everyone, I think I have a number of ideas to try. The unit has a transformer inside, 600/600ohm, the output is floating, so live and ground should be able to be connected across the output. The TX has the same transformer 600/600ohm, but the controller to the TX is a 600ohm line anyway, so it should be fine (by my understanding) For those interested the units are Tait Repeater modules. The reason for the request, was the matching, and also I have one receiver that has bag DTMF twist, falsing. Unable to use DMTF blanking, as it does it so much with voices. Have setup the radio/controller as required, and tested. Thought a impedance mis-match. Regards Kevin. - Original Message - From: John J. From the centre of the trim pot put a 4.7 K resistor to the 10 K input. Adjust the pot for the desired level going in to the 10 K input and it works very well. Since you are using resistors there is no freq. roll off. [Repeater-Builder] Information on Tait T-377/PA/03
Hi All, I am after some information on the Tait T-377/PA/03 module. This is fed by the Tait T-377/EX/02, via RF sense, and the main connections coming in the back are 2 sets of power connectors, as well as a single white wire. The problem is I can not find any reference on what the white wire does, there is no extra connection to the exciter. First thinking was the wire was a RF sense to the exciter if there was a problem. Does not appear to be this. The only thing I can think it is, is a power control switch Does anyone have any information on this module, and this wire?? Re: [Repeater-Builder] Audio mixer circuit
Kevin, I downloaded the file from the location listed and checked the diagram out. I have a question regarding the bottom of the 2 pictures. 1. If the level of either input is changed, will this alter the level of the other input? 2. can one add extra inputs to the circuit, I want to use an circuit that will allow 4-6 inputs with 2 outputs. 3. I would like to look at using a IC switch on the above 6 inputs, that allow the inputs to be switched when required? Believe the IC would be a 4040, but I would have to double check. I know some repeater controllers use this chip to control the audio paths. I will attempt to draw a circuit of my thoughts if this would help, but I think the above may explain enough. These are for a full duplex link at 9Mhz spacing on RX/TX Please bare in mind the cost for postage as I will require them to be mailed to New Zealand. Also I am looking for a Doug Hall radio voter (4 ch). 2nd hand would be okay. Any information, and pricing please e-mail me directly to keep the group free. Regards Kevin, ZL1UDD.
