Yes, NoOp, I typed in the next para that I had tried to set a
server-wide filter!!

I suspected it was spam that had been cross-posted, so made a
server-wide filter looking for the e-mail subject and set it to mark it
as read.

I then ran the filter by clicking the "Run Now" button at the bottom of
the Message Filters screen, after selecting the server I had wanted that
filter to apply for...No change.

I then closed the "Message Filters" screen, re-selected it under Tools,
re-selected the server, "Run Now"no change.

With the UseNet server selected, the other two options, "Run Filers on
Folder" and "Run Filters on Message" are greyed out, so what am I doing
wrong??

Do server-wide filters work at all??

Yes. However the "Run Now" button only works on email messages, not with
nntp. When you set a 'new' filter for nntp it works with 'new' messages
only. In order refilter all of the previous nntp messages you'll need to
unsubscribe from the newsgroup& then resubscribe. When the headers are
reloaded, the filters will apply.

O.K., I'll try to remember this the next time I'm about to get hit by spam!!

I just reset two filters for comp.sys.mac.apps:

1. Google groups:
Match all of the following
X-Complaints-To contains groups-ab...@google.com
Action: whatever suits you - I selected
Tag Message To Do
Mark As Read
(simply so that I could easily still see the offending posts)

2. Crosspost:
Match all of the following
Newsgroups contains ,
Action:
Mark as Flagged
Tag Message Later

Note: you can of course filter on a specific cross posted newsgroup(s)
such as 'alt.support.boy...'. or 'alt.politics...' etc instead of just
comma (,). Using just a comma wacks them all and you'll find guys like
Ant like to comp.sys.mac.apps, comp.sys.mac.system - just tell him to
stop cross posting (it's pretty rude to do it for every post anyway), or
filter him in by setting a filter for comp.sys.mac.system with an action
of 'Stop Filter Execution'

I turned the Filter logging on, and I then subscribed to
comp.sys.mac.apps, downloaded 1500 headers & marked the others as read.
Click on Help when you are in the filter composition window & then read
the section on 'Tip: Message filters are applied one after another.' so
that you understand how to set the priorities.

Here are some samples from the filter (I've taken the liberty of
snipping some of the possibly offensive words, and also a portion of the
email address):

Applied filter "googlegroups" to message from NEMO
 - When George walked out at 03/26/2012
03:18:44 PM tagged

Applied filter "googlegroups" to message from NEMO

03:18:44 PM flagged

Applied filter "Crosspost" to message from NEMO
> - When George walked out at 03/26/2012

Applied filter "Crosspost" to message from OMAR BLACK -
Why All Good People Should Hate at 03/26/2012 09:34:20 PM flagged

Applied filter "Crosspost" to message from OMAR BLACK -
Why All Good People Should Hate at 03/26/2012 09:34:20 PM tagged

Of course there are lots more, and I could have used 'Delete Message'
etc. Actually, 'Ignore the thread' and/or 'Ignore the subthread' are IMO
better choices. That way you won't see the thread/subthread at all, but
can turn ignored thread/subthreads back on to see a post that you may
have missed but want to now see/review.

My suggestion is that you turn off all filters that you currently have
for that newsgroup, set the two I've shown you plus the filter log, then
unsubscribe and resubscribe. Try just the flagged/tagged first so that
you can see what is being flagged/tagged. Then once you're happy, reset
for 'Ignore the thread' and/or 'Ignore the subthread'. Unsubscribe &
resubscribe again. Note: the reason for unsubscribing and resubscribing
is so that filters can work on older posts that you don't want to see.
Otherwise, they will only work on newly posted messages.

It occurs to me that you may not have the reader set to headers-only

because whoever wrote the code didn't understand NNTP and the difference
between the DELETE and CANCEL actions. That's which when you delete a
message it tries to do a cancel and take it off every machine on Earth,
instead of removing it from your local storage and header info. I argued
that with developers about 1998, and decided no one is so sure in their
opinion as those who ignore the facts and RFC info.

Trying to do CANCEL (a) doesn't often work, and (b) would be like delete
trying to contact all cc recipients and destroy their copy as well.
Sorry, that pisses me off 15 years later...

As of SM 2.7.2 on Linux they seem to work, the posts are just not

Actually no, that wasn't an option there the last time I cared, I was just using

Filtering on the wrong item.

You don't want to filter on "From" -- you want to filter on "Newsgroups".
You will have to use the Customize choice and add it. Then filter on your
comma.

Your example above says "ends" three times, and I don't think that will ever

No, you should blacklist (filter out) Google Groups, the source of nearly
all Usenet spam. Real people use Gmail and Yahoo addresses, so that is
not a good idea.

http://twovoyagers.com/improve-usenet.org/

I had a look at that... and at this page:

http://twovoyagers.com/improve-usenet.org/filters_ex2.html

it's claimed that Thunderbird/Seamonkey is unable to filter on
Message-ID. That may be true on the default setup (I'm not sure, it has
been *so long* since I started a profile from scratch..) but it's not
completely true. First, it's possible to create custom headers as
explained here:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Filters

There are two ways to do news filtering (actual;ly NNTP protocol filtering). One
is using the set of headers provided by the "overview" program, which includes
only certain headers rather than all, and which can be used without downloading
the article. The other is to download the article complete, and look at all
headers and the body. I don't think Seamonkey does that.

This limits the headers to those in overview, which includes the Message-ID
header. Note that other headers can be provided if the server is configured to
do so, but assume most aren't. So you can filter on Message-ID, but AFAIK not
totally arbitrary headers.

(I dimly remember having to do *something* to get that option to set up
custom headers. Maybe they are/used to be hidden by default, and I had
to change some about:config setting?)

And then, for even more options, there's FiltaQuilla:

http://mesquilla.com/extensions/filtaquilla/

Hope this helps, I spent about 20 years running news servers for major companies
and ISPs, it was a fun time and great technical forum before porn took over.

I'm not interested in deleting I mistyped. I just don't want to read

SM has a bizarre understanding of "delete" IMHO. The delete operation
(from local availability) seem confused with "cancel," or remove from
all servers everywhere. And the messge filter DELETE action will do what
you want, remove it from your index and header pane.

The new group in question has calmed down of recent. not by attempts to
filter.
But because Google quit the connection to USENET. According some some
on the newsgroup in question several people have notes has quit
forwarding GoogleGroups to USENET either by design or something broke.
My opinion I'd just as soon see it stay broke for next 30 years at least.

Have you tried "deleting" them? Filters work fine for me in ngs, but I

afaik, NS/SM has never had NG filters up to 1119.
I don't know about 2+.
At any rate, I have never been able to find or use
such for NG's. fyi- cannot del NG postings...
at least not easily and possibly not legally.

I have always had message filters for Newsgroups, and I think you've
misunderstood about how "Delete Messages" is accomplished.

We can't do it in the newsgroups, but we can set our NG message
*filters* to delete them, so that we never have to see them. It is so
nice. :)
bj

I'm not interested in deleting I mistyped. I just don't want to read the stuff.

SM has a bizarre understanding of "delete" IMHO. The delete operation (from
local availability) seem confused with "cancel," or remove from all servers
everywhere. And the messge filter DELETE action will do what you want, remove it
from your index and header pane.

As of SM 2.7.2 on Linux they seem to work, the posts are just not indexed into
the list of available postings in the heading frame. There used to be a way to
make an entire thread hidden after it was in the index, but I can't find any
info on how that used to work. It was not with a filter, just a mark on the
thread that kept it off the screen.

Anyway, filters do seem to work for me in ng.

I think in a case like this, it would be very useful to actually see
what you're talking about. If you can create a screenshot (see

thought while this thread had some attention on the same subject...

No, you should blacklist (filter out) Google Groups, the source of
nearly all Usenet spam. Real people use Gmail and Yahoo addresses, so
that is not a good idea.

http://twovoyagers.com/improve-usenet.org/

How would you phrase in filter. I have two Use net servers I subscribe
to, that are plagued with this problem.

Filter on the Message ID contains googlegroups, and Mark Read or Delete
or whatever you choose.

I created one main filter and then duplicated that file into other
server Accounts and other Profiles - even on other machines. Worked like
a charm. Then once those were in place I did have to go and do a bit of
editing specific to each server, but it saved me a *lot* of typing by
doing the file duplication/moves.

I just create the above in both servers and set them to be Marked
read, ignore thread and ignore sub thread.

That hopefully will take care of it.

Might have to do one from Yahoo groups although yahoo groups are tightly
regulated I am a Moderator for one Yahoo group. for a couple of years
I've only had to mark a couple of items as spam and there immediately
removed.

Those pages are not up to date. They were written by the late Blinky the
Shark (longtime Usenet guy who died young a few years ago), and archived
by someone else. Yes, Tbird/Seamonkey can now filter on Message ID, but
could not when Blinky wrote those pages. It's quite simple to do so now.

The pages are often recommended when someone complains of spam.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Filters

(I dimly remember having to do *something* to get that option to set up
custom headers. Maybe they are/used to be hidden by default, and I had
to change some about:config setting?)

There's a customize button in the filter dialog if I remember correctly.

Okay now that I have found customize. How. what's the best method.

The titles keep changing. Just have to get rid of it until they get bored.

Yes - that's how I maintain my filter keyword list (every dirty word or
off-color short phrase I can think of...) - by looking over the Filter
Log from time to time. Sometimes I do trap the odd message I'd like to
have seen and have to go back and revise my filter. In general it seems
to knock out the whole thread when it catches something on my list, but
not always. I filter mostly on Subject, but also on a few odd Senders.

It would be really nice to be able to filter on header information -
like Path or IP - to stop a particular bit of spam, but that would
require a new feature.

Filter on the Message ID contains googlegroups, and Mark Read or Delete
or whatever you choose.

There's a customize button in the filter dialog if I remember correctly.

No, you should blacklist (filter out) Google Groups, the source of nearly
all Usenet spam. Real people use Gmail and Yahoo addresses, so that is

How would you phrase in filter. I have two Use net servers I subscribe

I had a look at that... and at this page:

http://twovoyagers.com/improve-usenet.org/filters_ex2.html

it's claimed that Thunderbird/Seamonkey is unable to filter on
Message-ID. That may be true on the default setup (I'm not sure, it has
been *so long* since I started a profile from scratch..) but it's not
completely true. First, it's possible to create custom headers as
explained here:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Filters

(I dimly remember having to do *something* to get that option to set up
custom headers. Maybe they are/used to be hidden by default, and I had
to change some about:config setting?)

And then, for even more options, there's FiltaQuilla:

I have always had message filters for Newsgroups, and I think you've
misunderstood about how "Delete Messages" is accomplished.

We can't do it in the newsgroups, but we can set our NG message
*filters* to delete them, so that we never have to see them. It is so
nice. :)
bj

I'm not interested in deleting I mistyped. I just don't want to read the
stuff.

It's not actually deleting them... it just keeps them from appearing in
YOUR newsgroup download. Why do you want to see them if they're
offensive... and you're not going to read them?
bj

I don't want to see them. You can't delete Newsgroup post. (I would love
the ability to do) so next best thing is mark them read.

BTW I apparently have to Chris I. Changing from match exactly to match
any of the following appears to work.

Not so. I just subscribed to that newsgroup& before reading the

Keep in mind that NG filters are applied and in effect _after_ you've

Hint re your list spammer... an easy nuke to that one is to filter on:
X-Complaints-To: groups-ab...@google.com

Sorry forgot another hint - the offensive one also cross posts to
multiple groups:

Newsgroups:
comp.sys.mac.apps,rec.music.beatles,alt.support.boy-lovers,alt.sports.baseball.ny-yankees,alt.politics.homosexuality

It's quite easy to set up a crosspost filter:

Yep, just filter on the comma.

Sounds interesting I might have to setup such a Filter.

NG filtering is working for me, and in fact working a bit too

I've have this filter in place for a very long time (I delete them so I
never see them) & I set it for the entire news servers rather than just
the newsgroup. And some individual filters (again google/googlegroups)
Example from mozilla.dev.apps.seamonkey:

Applied filter "Injection-Info: googlegroups.com" to message from
thurman jude - Youngest Chicks Xxx || Younger
Pron Movies || Young Videos at 02/20/2012 04:19:35 PM deleted

Applied filter "Injection-Info: googlegroups.com" to message from
thurman jude - Nubile Underage Porn || Virgin
Porn Movies || Extreme Hentai Porn at 02/20/2012 04:20:01 PM deleted

Yes, I may miss some valid posts, but I prefer the quiet rather than the
spam.

So decided to create filters to mark them read.

They don't work. Turns out that SeaMonkey sometime or another has
removed the ability to filter news Groups.

When did this happen and why? Now spam and offensive material I don't
want to read I can no longer mark as read. So I have to go through each
group each topic, subtopic and mark read before I can enjoy reading the
group.

To say I am steamed would be minimizing the way feel now. All I want to
do as mark them as read as soon as I go so I don't have to deal it.

Have you tried "deleting" them? Filters work fine for me in ngs, but I
choose to delete them in the filter.

Doesn't look much different from the Windows screen. Have you clicked
on the down arrow after "Ignore Threads"... to see what is available?

I have about 10 choices when I click the arrow after my choice of
"Delete Messages".

You have it set to "Match all of the following". It should be set to
"Match any of the following".

afaik, NS/SM has never had NG filters up to 1119.
I don't know about 2+.
At any rate, I have never been able to find or use
such for NG's. fyi- cannot del NG postings...
at least not easily and possibly not legally.
