Yes, I saw your image. However, that is not what I requested. In the
image, the top has a Print button followed by a Page Setup button.
Select the Page Setup button.

You will get a smaller window with two tabs. One tab is Format &
Options. The other tab is Margins & Header/Footer. I requested you
tell us -- in text not with an image -- what you see on the Format &
Options tab. While you are doing that, you might as well also tell us
what you see on the Margins & Header/Footer tab.

By the way, the reason I request text and not an image is that the
operation of this newsgroup often filters out attachments, including
images. As an alternative, you can create images and upload them to
some server. In that case, indicate the URI (Web address) of the images.

I use Print Preview to see how a Web page might look printed, to
determine how many hard-copy pages will be printed, and to see whether I
really need to print the last page. I rarely use Print Preview to
actually print.

Under "Print range" on the Print popup dialogue, the radio button for
"Selection" does work. Only the selected portion of the Web page is
printed. However, this involves closing Print Preview and going
directly to the Print dialogue.

No, it does NOT work with Print Preview. The entire Web page is
previewed with the selected portion no longer selected. Thus, when
Print is selected on the Print Preview tool bar, nothing is selected for
selective printing. This appears to be bug #140718 at

Perhaps it was a smart decision for Hillary Clinton to use her
private E-mail server while Secretary of State. According to
current Secretary of State John Kerry, we know that the Russians

I recently observed a similar problem at another California state Web
site, the site for the California Secretary of State. With a new
politician in that office, the site was substantially redesigned. Now,
existing RSS feeds no longer work; and new RSS feeds cannot be setup. I
tried to report this problem via the Webmail page for the site's

I'm not in CA, but this sounds like a cookie issue. Are you blocking

Nope.

I've also seen this kind of thing as a security measure on pages that
accept credit card info: if you back up, you have to re-enter the card
data. This way, if you walk away from the computer after the transaction
is complete, someone else can't walk up and use the back button to read
your data.

Yeah, that's annoying but I didn't hit back.

I'm not in CA, but this sounds like a cookie issue. Are you blocking

I've also seen this kind of thing as a security measure on pages that
accept credit card info: if you back up, you have to re-enter the card

is complete, someone else can't walk up and use the back button to read

cat prefs.js is not needed.

easier/shorter command is grep print_printer prefs.js.

actually, in 'prefs.js', contrary to your 'grep', you show
print.print and you have 2 print_printer.

user_pref(print.print_printer, );
user_pref(print_printer, );

tho you are posting using oos, you are posting *nix commands.

if you are actually debugging a *nix system, why not install CUPS
if not already installed, to set up printers. once CUPS is working,
firefox will/should pick up the printers.

CUPS is the standards-based, open source printing system developed
by Apple Inc. for Mac OS® X and other UNIX®-like operating systems.

you connect to CUPS via firefox using http://localhost:631/.

this is how i have my 4 printers set up and they work for both
firefox and thunderbird. if/when i need to change among printers,
i make change using CUPS.

with CUPS, in both firefox and thunderbird, i get;

} [geo@boxen bsyq4708.default]$ grep print_printer prefs.js

  1] i _do_not_show_ 'user_pref(print_printer, );'.
2] with end of line of ); it is indicating that you
do not have any printer configured because the printer
 shows within the .

speaking of which, does printing work under thunderbird?

Don't use and never had Thunderbird on this lappy, but do have CUPS due
to old printers that Apple doesn't support by default. :(

if not and you do have CUPS running and configured, it will block
printing if it is not set up correctly.

For kicks, I renamed this file and started up Firefox to redo its
prefs.js file. Same results (no print preview). I also tried the
other Mac OS X v10.8.5 account (administrator instead of standard
level) and still saw the same problem.

again, what about CUPS?

Now what? Is there somewhere else to look? FYI, it doesn't matter
if the HP printer is slightly new (a few years old) or over a
decade old. :(

just look to see if you have CUPS set up. if you a printer that does
not have correct drivers for CUPS installed for any printer of any
make, type, or age, CUPS will not configure for it. correct drivers
must be installed and are available for over 99% of printers
available. should you have a make/type not listed, there is a 99.9%
probability that a similar driver will work.

so, click link http://localhost:631/ to see if you have CUPS and
configure it.

Anyways, the current printers are HP with this MBP: DJ 450 and Office

from any CUPS page select Printers tab. on Printers page, click a
printer name.

on printers page, click [Maintenance], select Print Test Page.

after printing, select Print Self Test Page.

Perfect results and no problems.

if both print, open some other program, ie, an editor, create some
text lines, send to printer.

No problems from previous printings like Office, Safari, Chrome, etc. so
no need to print again.

if it prints, there is a problem with interface to firefox.

if you can not print from another program, there is a problem with
CUPS interfacing to programs.

i have not had any problems with CUPS from day one of use.

because this is appearing to be CUPS related, my best suggestion is
to log https://www.cups.org/ and join or login.

enter 'firefox' as search. check thru 'matches' to see if you find
anything. if not, post to 'Developers' list which should get faster
reply that other lists.

at one time, under fedora or mandrake, do not recall, there was an
option of selecting CUPS or postscript printing. i no longer see
such. if you have such selection of ability to use utility other
than CUPS, you might give it a try.

also, have you tried a web search? it is possible that there has been
such a problem with another flavor of *nix.

I'll try. I was hoping this was a known common issue. :(

one last thought, *default*. have you tried, or have, a setting for
a printer as the default?

Yes. Remember, I tried a brand new Mac OS X account and selecting
various printers.

because i use a switch box, i have to select which printer is the
default before i print. possible you need to do same.

i do wish i could have been more help, but my experience and knowledge
has never encountered problem similar to this.

hopefully another linux user will pick up on this thread and be able
to help you.

i also wish i could spend more time with you on this, but i have run
into a portioning problem that i need to correct so i can upgrade to
centos 7.

I wonder if OTHER Mac OS X users have this problem too. Wait, am I the
only Mac OS X Firefox user in here? It seems like only Windows and Linux
users have participated in my thread so far.

as others have said, and I will say too, there is no problem with FF

some website coding that will not work in old FF/SM coding -- for

as its based on FF3 coding.

I use Seamonkey 1.1.4 and it works fine with the print preview.

Gary, are you also getting compacted-data / reduced-pages for
print-preview-Contact and print-preview Address-Book ? Barry.

Thanks for the check (and Daniel).

I just checked print-preview address book on 2.0a3 and it appears to be
ok. I have one with 63 pages all addresses show up. I printed to
cups-pdf and that looks ok as well.
I have 2.0b1pre on the laptop, so I put the same address book on
that

system, and again no problems. The only difference is that has 9.1b3pre
and is /20090219. I'll update it later today and test again; if
there is

a difference, then it would be a regression.

[Ubuntu Hardy (8.04.2) on both systems. SeaMonkey(s) installed in my
home directory rather than the default /usr/local.]

Barry, I just tried on 2.0b1pre/9.1b4pre/20090312 and it works there as
well.

Gary, Many-thanks for that extensive-testing.
My profuse-apologies.. My bad!
Deleting system-install and installing /home/user/ was unsuccessful,
but BASH reported problems with the Lightning-extension.
Temporarily-uninstalling Lightning restored full demarcated
print-preview/printing to both PDF and ps (printer).
I assume Lightning will need to integrate with aBook/Contacts, for
appointments and notifications, etcetera.

Appreciated the assistance (and impetus). Barry.
Temporarily-disabling Lightning via Add-on-Manager, restores
aBook/Contact print/print-preview, so uninstalling is unnecessary.

PHP is one of many *server* side scripting languages, others include
ASP, CFM, and JSP, to name a few. (They all behave in a generally
similar manner, so, while I'm using PHP as the current example, you
could substitute any of the other flavors, as well.)

Unlike a static HTML page, when you request a PHP page, the server does
not send the code as it is written in the file, verbatim. Rather, it
processes the script commands with the PHP interpreter, to dynamically
generate the relevant HTML.

It is the resulting HTML that is actually sent to the browser. If the
server is properly configured, the browser never sees the server side
code, only the HTML result. Which is a good thing, as I'm not aware of
*any* browser that can render, or run the actual PHP code, itself!

However, like any other programming, scripting, or markup language,
garbage in = garbage out. As JimM has pointed out, that page generates
a whole boatload of errors.

That's not the fault of PHP, though. Like a good child, it is simply
doing exactly as it is told, by the developers. Just as with static
HTML, they have complete control as to whether the script output is
standards compliant, or not.

That's the condensed version. For further reading, explanation, or just
plain curiosity, see these pages, for starters:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server-side_scripting
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Client-side_scripting

Hope this clears it up.

as others have said, and I will say too, there is no
problem with FF 3. SM 1.1.x is based on the old FF 2
coding, therefore, there are some website coding that
will not work in old FF/SM coding -- for example php.
I will go out on a hunch and say that SM2 should work,
as its based on FF3 coding.
