Nope as stated before, on this computer Win 7 Pro. latest Seamonkey, I do not get that option no matter what method is used to open a new account. It looks like this may be a bug as reported here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=521861 Thanks Arnie: At least I know I'm not crazy. This appears to be a very selective bug that has been around since 2009. Funny that it is random and does not affect every installation of Seamonkey. Nothing worse than an intermittent bug in any system. I will have to access News E-T.org on one of my other computers for now. A bit annoying but it will have to do. azed13 There is a workaround mentioned in the Bug that states: Workarounds: Set mail.server.serverX.valid to true or delete invalid news account. You only see that New Account Setup for a new profile. Let me sleep on this. Happy to wait for a solution that works. How about if you select *Edit* -Mail Newsgroup Account Settings and select Add Account on the left panel. Do you get the chance to add a Newsgroup account (4th selection for me) there?? Nope as stated before, on this computer Win 7 Pro. latest Seamonkey, I do not get that option no matter what method is used to open a new account. I only get the mail setup wizard and entering anything in that dialogue box wipes out my current Mozilla group. So I repeat my question, is there a about:config entry that is screwed up? I have no problem setting up on my laptop or my other desktop. All with Win 7 Pro. and latest Seamonkey. In short, *YES*!! Setting up a new account should not wipe out an existing account, and by using the method I mentioned above I can, and Arnie can, set up new Newsgroup Account, so you've (or your computer) have done something wrong!! You sure you are trying the *Edit* dropdown, now, rather than the Window dropdown that was mentioned above?? I have 3 computers running Win XP and have no problem with them. I have two more running Win 7, one Home Premium on a desktop and the other Ultimate on a laptop. First, on either Win 7 computer, I cannot get anything under Edit that says Mail Newsgroup settings. I first have to select Window and then Mail Newsgroup before Edit allows me to get to Mail Newsgroup settings. Second, after getting to Mail Newsgroup Settings and clicking on Add Account, I get the 3 option screen on my desktop running Win 7 Home Premium using the Default profile. However, on the laptop running Win 7 Ultimate and a custom profile, I get the same screen as the OP. I don't get 3 choices. DoctorBill Who is your internet provider? They may provide newsgroups. Check with them and see. Most of them do not provide binary newsgroups (the ones that contain pictures, music, etc.) but some still provide regular text newsgroups. If your provider DOES have newsgroups their site should have instructions on how to set up to use them. If your provider does not have newsgroups, then you need to subscribe to a website that does. I use giganews.com It costs 4.99 per month to subscribe and they have given good service. Some are free. Do a search for newsgroups (without the quotation marks). Once you get signed up to one, they should provide instructions on how to use them, or some of us may be able to help. Thanks so much guys ! I will follow thru. BTW - what IS a Newsgroup that it can function via the MAIL part of a browser - some special or different thing that a web site ? DB Newsgroups, websites, and email are all different things. Newsgroups are more similar to email, but work differently in that the messages there are for everybody, not just one entity. That means that the messages there cannot be deleted by one person (but email messages, of course, can be). As far as getting access to more newsgroups goes, you can add more newsgroup server addresses as accounts. For instance, if you wanted access to Microsoft newsgroups, add news.microsoft.com as a new newsgroup account. Tried that and it didn't work. What are the settings? I just tried that, and it works for me. Go into Mail Newsgroup Account Settings (in the Edit menu for me, but I use Mac OS), click Add Account, specify newsgroup account, then fill in the user name and email address you want to use, then input the address of the newsgroup server. For Microsoft, that would be news.microsoft.com. You can leave that as the name of the account or put in a different name. ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

I had already done as instructed with no results and then realized I was not getting the option to select news group for the new account. The click on account goes directly to the mail wizard. I fired up my lap top which also has the latest version of Seamonkey and lo and behold, clicking on new account does indeed give me the choice and I was able to make my connection to news.E-T.org. Now, the question is why my main computer does not give me the choice? I even reinstalled Seamonkey and the problem is not solved. Is there something in about:config that is not correct? Thanks in advance for any help provided. azed13 Just to be sure we are on the same page for your desktop: Click Window, Mail Newsgroups, Edit, Mail Newsgroups Account Settings..., Add Account You should now see the screen New Account Setup. On that screen the third item is used to set up a Newsgroup Account. Do you get that far on your desktop? Whoops!! You only see that New Account Setup for a new profile. Let me sleep on this. Happy to wait for a solution that works. ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

Most require registering of some sort. Some are free, some are not. For instance, if you wanted access to Microsoft newsgroups, add news.microsoft.com as a new newsgroup account. No, you can't do that. The microsoft news server was shut down years ago. Microsoft switched to web forums and dropped News.
