Another piece of flakiness with W-E and Firefox
While on the subject of Firefox, does anyone else find that, for no apparent reason, W-E (9.2 in this case), will suddenly stop reading the contents of edit boxes, and I have to restart W-E to get it back. Firefox accessibility with W-E
Once upon a time, GW Micro used to proudly proclaim the co-operative nature of its relationship with the Mozila foundation. What happened to that? Did someone leave one of the two companies? Did the developers of Firefox suddenly lose interest in accessibility as an issue worth their attention? Re: Microsoft rule
Good idea, although the bugs present are mainly to do with privacy rather than anyting else. By default all new and upgraded Windows 10 installations will have all privacy settings on unless you choose the custom settings option during set up or you go into settings later on. But the privacy settings are scattered all over the place and so it's easier to turn them off during setup. I call this a bug since these should be off, not on, by default. Re: Microsoft rule
Karen, I follow the same rule. I tend to be more conservative and wait a year, but 6 months is a reasonable choice too. MS offering to give it away got a lot of people who would normally hesitate to go ahead and jump, but I wasn't one of them. The fact is, I use my computer for, well, just about everything. I need it to work, it's as simple as that. I'm not willing to risk breaking it with a brand new, not tested in the wild version of Windows. If, in 6 months to a year, everyone is still raving about how great Windows 10 is like I hear people in my various communities doing right now, then I'll consider an upgrade. First, I wonder if not being able to adequately interact with a highly rated package isn't going to reduce its effectiveness. If I can't use the interface, am I going to set up the options in a way that is most effective? If I can't read a warning message when a virus is encountered, am I going to make the right choice? I don't know if the above would apply to Casperski and not saying that it does, the question is meant to be generic. I've also read that ratings of virus checkers need to be considered carefully because enough is known about testing that virus checkers can tailor their protection to do well without it necessarily meaning much in terms of broad protection. Again, I am not saying Casperski does this, because I do not know that is the case. However, the whole state of viruses and virus checkers is so variable that I am not convinced one can pick a highly rated checker and know with any certainty that it is highly rated today as it was when the last tests came out. I can control to some extent whether I can pick a virus checker that I can use comfortably. Therefore, I don't know if the choice of accessibility versus effectiveness is truly as obvious as you describe it. Having said that, Casperski is common enough that I am glad you are dialogging with them. It would be nice if it were more accessible, and I, for one, would be very interested to hear what you hear from them and which areas you find to be useable and which you do not. Hi, Pam. You're in good company. (smile) UAC isn't a replacement for virus protection. In fact, my PC also had UAC set at the highest level and was still hit. However, it just adds a small, perhaps an extremely small level of extra protection because, in theory, any program would require your permission before trying to install or modify system settings. Question about importing/exporting settings in Thunderbird
Guys, I have a question. A friend of mine told me yesterday that there was a way to export all of my thunderbird settings then reimport them on another computer. I don't speak just of all my e-mails, and all my accounts. I mean, it literally imports all the things under account settings, as well as all my view settings, all the things I configured through tools, options, etc. I have looked literally everywhere. My friend wasn't totally clear if he used an add-on to do this, or if you natively can do it. Basically, here's the deal. I have Thunderbird completely the way I now like it. I even had my mom drag the e-mail list headers with the mouse for me into the order I desire. Plus, I have my gmail configured, a few mail filters set, etc. I want to install Thunderbird on my desktop machine, but I don't want to have to go through all the setup configuration again, as frankly, I'm not totally sure I could totally remember what all I changed. Plus, I don't want to have to get my mom again to drag my message list headers around for me, etc. So, how can I export all of my settings, so that when installing to my desktop, I don't have to go through all that crap again. My first was a CP/M computer made by guys out in Minnesota. I still have it. Can't bring myself to dump it. My first screen reader was made by someone on this very list, David Duran. I don't see being forced unless you need to. You may decide to change when there's hardware that only the new OS can use. You might decide to switch when a program which requires the OS comes out. Otherwise, as long as your hardware works and your software doesn't need upgrading and you can keep the system protected, there's no real reason to move. - Original Message - From: Sunshine via Talk talk@lists.window-eyes.com To: wohlg...@gmail.com; Window-Eyes Discussion List talk@lists.window-eyes.com; Chris challswor...@icloud.com Sent: Monday, August 03, 2015 3:09 PM Subject: Re: you will upgrade!!lol So what you are saying is no matter if a person wanted to stay with windows 7 microsfoft will force everyone to upgrade to windows 10 then is this correct? can this be confirmed? Re: Firefox accessibility with W-E
I can not say that relations between GW Micro and other Software Companies have changed, but I have noticed the level of accessibility is shrinking over the last few years. It is not fair to blame GW Micro, but I do think it has a lot to do with how current Software is coded. making a Program accessible seems to be a nuisance for many shops that write Software. Perhaps the lack of accessibility has to do with the Pressure to release a new title to the Market quicker, and to finish a project faster, things like access for the Blind user, which are very low in numbers, is cut in order to make those new Deadlines for new projects. As someone has already mentioned, software has become quite visual in nature. the Mouse is used, and even Finger Swipes are becoming the norm, instead of Keyboard Short cuts from a Keyboard. A few days ago, I installed a new program, only to find it was lacking any Keyboard Short cuts. The Program was quite Mouse oriented, and to the average Sighted user, the program would be easy to use. However, I am still looking for ways to use it, using a Screen Reader, and an assortment of Key strokes from the Keyboard. So far, not having as much success as I need in order to use this program. As for Firefox, it does seem as if the people they have doing some of the programming, the last several versions of Firefox has been lacking in giving total access. As where this trend will end, I am not sure if I really want to know. So far, this trend looks to be gaining momentum, which will leave many of those of us who work for a living, possibly joining the ranks of the Disabled because I can no longer do what is asked of me by my Boss. I also wonder if part of the reason Access is diminishing, is due to the numbers of programmers from other countries, where Access for the Blind, is almost unheard of, are now writing code, because these foreigners are cheaper to hire than their counterparts here in the States or in Europe. I have no proof of this, but I am only tossing out suspicions. I know here in the States, we have legislation to force Companies to make their products accessible. microsoft has put effort into following this, but what we have from Microsoft still falls short of what we need. I think we maybe should require Colleges to add to their Computer Science classes, a section on writing code that makes programs accessible to the Blind. the last Company I worked for, the Owner hired several Programmers from the Philippines. why? Because he could pay them $15 a day, and the typical Programmer here in the States is going to demand far more than this, per hour. the owner attempted to make this Philippine connection work any way he could. Couldn't tell you how often he flew there and had the Development guys here in the States attempt to show them what they needed to know. Perhaps very good programmers in the Philippines cost more than $15 per day, and the owner was just not willing to pay more. But when all was said and done, Thousands of dollars had been spent, that would have been more wisely spent by hiring quality American programmers instead. As it turned out, the Cheap Owner spent a lot of money, and has nothing to show for it, and he still doesn't have a program to go to market with. but, I can tell you, these Philippine programmers were not adding code to make their project accessible. they were just attempting to get something worth while to even run. -- Dave dlh...@centurylink.net ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. RE: I want Opinions On New Lap Top
Nope ... embarassing but when I checked, it is a Dell Latitude E6530, and there just isn't anything I don't like about it. It is one of the 5 pound laptops, in my opinion just the right size so that you can carry enough keyboard battery and processor, but some people may want one of the ultra-light ones which weigh-in at around 2 pounds or so. These are highly portable, but their keyboards are quite difficult to adjust to I think. I cannot find my collected notes on notebooks, so I searched through older Window-Eyes discussions, but only came up with one really usefully review so far, which I am pasting below. I don't know if this model is still available, but you might try the same process, and tell the human you speak with your requirements (such as full keyboard). I have been extremely happy with this laptop, which has performed in all ways as well as any desktop, but weights under 5 pounds, and has a bettery life (with the extended battery) of 10 to 12 hours. It has a very large amount of ram buffering the conventional drive (called some sort of hybrid, as it has a lot of storage like a conventional hd, but is fast like a SSD). I have more info at home, collected every time someone recommended a laptop; I'll see if I can find it and shoot it to you Bob. Dell also offered a docking station which I bought ... in my opinion much better than the alternative technology called a port replicator; the docking station just lets you sit the laptop down into it, and it has its own set of audio and video connectors, usb connectors, power supply (larger, for a faster charge of your battery), and you don't have to fiddle around with connecting and disconnecting everything as you do with port replicators. Docking stations are relatively rare, and again usually only sold to the business crowd. If you can't find anything at Dell which you like, my next recommendation is to go through the business group at Lenovo (formerly the IBM thinkpad line); they have a lot of business oriented equipment. Business oriented pcs also usually come with Windows which is just bare Windows, and no crapware added on (another bonus). Also, buying a customized laptop like this isn't the cheapest, but you do get exactly what you want (in my case, I got a lot of extras like SD card readers, a good DVD RW device, and a relatively small screen (which wasn't important to me and made things lighter). You can also pay for exactly as much processor as you can afford, and usually can specify the more expensive (but faster) Intel version of power saving CPUs rather than the AMD line which are often placed into cheaper laptops to keep costs down. you don't have to wait. if you have windows 7 or 8 you can go to microsoft.com and download the windows 10 download tool. 32 or 64 bit version. i thought i could run the 32 bit version on my 64bit computer to burn a 32bit dvd for my windows tablet but it would only run on a 32bit computer. with the tool you can choose to download the files for a u s b flash drive or to download a real windows.eso file you can burn to a dvd. you just have to be careful which version you download. it has to match the version of win7 or 8 you have. win7 or 8 home for windows 10 home. win7 or 8 pro for windows 10 pro etc. i don't know what home e n or pro e n means. maybe for enterprise version. or english? -Original Message- From: Rick Jarvis via Talk Sent: Saturday, August 08, 2015 12:12 PM To: talk@lists.window-eyes.com Subject: I am waiting! Reminder about Thunderbird question
BTW, still, hardly anyone has written me back about my other TB question. Is there a reliable way that I can move the message headings around in the message list? So, say for example, that a folder has it where the subject is first, followed then by the sender's name. What I want to do is reverse that so it looks more like Outlook. I want it where it has the sender's name, then the subject, then finally the date. My mom was able to fix this for me on my main inbox folder of GMail by dragging the sender's name header and dropping it on the subject header to reverse them with the physical mouse, but try as I may in version 38 of TB, I cannot seem to get my mouse pointer to focus there where I can do this myself. It used to work, but apparently not anymore unless you all know something I don't. The bad thing is, I thought that would work globally, I didn't realize when she was doing this for me that there is a graphic you gotta click to apply to all folders. Could someone maybe write me a script that would shift those two flip flopped on the active folder when TB is fully maximized, then hit the graphic to apply to all folders? I'd be happy to pay via PayPal if someone could do that for me, if there really isn't a reliable way otherwise. I couldn't pay a huge amount for the script, but I'd be happy to pay up to $20 for it, should it not already be easily possible. Just let me know. Exactly the next office 2016 I don't think will run on windows 7 as it will be taking advantage of touch an that's only on modern devices which had 8.1 and windows 10. So whether you like it or not you will have to upgrade if you need to take advantage of modern apps that wont run on windows 7 but will on windows 8.1 and windows 10. Re: windows 10 question
Good day George, When you perform an upgrade in place it does not remove or disturb the software you had previously installed in Windows 7. It is certainly possible some of the software might be incompatible. In which case you should upgrade or uninstall such software. Did you run the Windows 10 compatibility tool? The Windows 10 Compatibility tool would have told you if any of your software on your Windows 7 machine was incompatible with Windows 10 and advise you to uninstall such software. Useful Windows 10 Upgrade resources: General help with upgrading to Windows 10: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/help-upgrade-windows-10 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/help-upgrade-windows-10 Compatibility Report for Windows 10: FAQ http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/compatibility-report-windows-10 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/compatibility-report-windows-10 Windows 10 QA: (Fairly long) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/Windows-10-faq http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/Windows-10-faq If you want to check if there are any software or hardware issues that might impact your Windows 10 upgrade you can do so using the “Get Windows 10” Icon to “Check your upgrade status” and generate a compatibility report. To do so follow these steps. (Note: that you must have installed KB3035583 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3035583 for the ?Get Windows 10 app and its associated icon to be available. You'll find it in Windows Update, as a Recommended update for Windows 8.1 and an Optional update for Windows 7.) Note: I have included screen captures to assist those with low vision. Step 1: Right-click the Get Windows 10 icon (on the right side of the taskbar) and then click Check your upgrade status. Step 2: In the Get Windows 10 app, click the hamburger menu, which looks like a stack of three lines (labeled 1 in the screenshot below) and then click Check your PC (2). Step 3: See the list of potential compatibility issues. The list includes separate categories for devices and apps. So far, most of what I have seen has been minor. If you see more significant issues, I'm interested in hearing about them. Feel free to send me an email. Technical Note: If that Get Windows 10 App icon doesn’t appear on your PC, here is what you can do to make it appear manually. There are some pre-requistes: You will need the following updates: For Windows 7 SP1 : KB3035583 and KB2952664 For Windows 8.1 : KB3035583 and KB2976978 If they are not in your Windows Update list, hit the “Check for Update” option to forcefully download it. There are blind people who just don't ever. To those who are resistant to trying the best anti-malware programs, I suggest do try to use to mouse cursor, as sometimes you can learn to make a program accessible by finding and clicking the proper choices. I've done this with Trojan Killer and before it PrevX, which received some of the best ratings at the time. I do think I am switching to Kaspersky, as it does get great reviews, and with all of us having to use pcs for electronic banking these days (or bill paying, or other critical functions), we can't afford to have a virus/trojan in our lives. It's my same reasoning which causes me to urge everyone here to use the paid version of Window-Eyes, so that you have support, because your pc is usually quite critical to your daily life. Yes, MSE isn't the best, but I still recommend it to people who have no sighted help ever, or who won't spend money for anti-malware. It's better than nothing. However, it may offer some degree of accessibility and it is the antimalware program I chose to use as of a few months ago, after Microsoft Security Essentials failed to protect me against a rather crippling virus. I use it because it is one of the top-rated antivirus packages on the market and I refuse to compromise my computer's security in the name of accessibility. I am, as some people may know, extremely passionate and a bit militant about this issue and I apologize if I come off too strong about this. However, blind people need to consider that we need to use the security software which is highly-rated, rather than choosing the package that works best with a screen reader but which may not offer an acceptable level of protection. I am trying to dialog with Kaspersky regarding these issues and I plan to continue to do so until accessibility is improved. I would like to strongly urge all of you to do the same. If one person contacts a company, they may be less inclined to act. If many of us contact them with the same concerns, particularly if we're paying customers, perhaps we'll get results which will be more favorable to us. So many of us, myself included, find it easier to choose a security program because it works best with whatever screen reader we happen to be using. When it comes to the security of my computer, that is no longer acceptable to me. For years, I relied upon MSE because it was speech-friendly. I'm also an extremely cautious, responsible and security-conscious user but these traits are no longer enough to keep you safe. I now insist on using security software which is highly-rated, meaning that it gets excellent scores with independent lab tests. If it's not accessible, I am willing to engage in constructive dialog with the company and I will go to incredible lengths to do this but, in the end my goal is to make it accessible. Re: Reminder about Thunderbird question
I did this a long time ago using the mouse drag and drop hot key. And I remember having to track down how to do it in Thunderbird help because there was some quirk about how you could move these items. I don't remember what that was now. But in the end I got it done without too much trouble. Below is the Window-Eyes help for the Drag and Drop hot key. Mouse Drag and Drop. Window-Eyes provides a straight-forward method to perform a drag and drop operation with the mouse. Follow these steps to drag and drop. Move the mouse pointer to the item you want to move or the start of the text you want to select. Press the Mouse Drag and Drop hot key, which is Insert-Numpad-Delete by default. Window-Eyes will say, mark. Move the pointer to where you want the item to move or where end of the text you want to select. Press the Mouse Drag and Drop hot key again. A dialog will open. Choose Drop, and press Enter. Note that for the drag and drop to work successfully, both the start and end locations you choose must remain visible. The operation will fail if part of the area is covered up by another window. Re: casperski antivirus
With all due respect, Gary, I would suggest taking a closer look at the blog and reading the entire actual report. My read of it is that using antivirus software is a given. The true focus is on the fact that there are other things we should be doing to up our security, i.e. unique and strong passwords, use a password manager, and keep our operating systems and applications up to date. The assumption of antivirus use is why these things were in their top list. There was also a much higher use of Linux among the experts, which changes the whole equation. From the blog: Experts acknowledged the benefits of antivirus software, but expressed concern that it might give users a false sense of security since it’s not a bulletproof solution. From the report: 1. note that antivirus effectiveness and vulnerability to malware infections are dependent on user behavior in various respects, from whether users install antivirus software, to how users configure their antivirus software, to what websites they visit. They found that 38% of the participants in their study were exposed to malware that antivirus software cleaned, so they demonstrate that the behavior to install and configure antivirus software can actually make users more secure. 2. Some non-expert practices were considered “good” by experts (e.g., install antivirus software, use strong passwords); others were not (e.g., delete cookies, visit only known websites). Re: Question about importing/exporting settings in Thunderbird
Hi, A simple way to back up Thunderbird settings is to do the following. I use W7 32 bit and may be slightly different in Windows or 64 bit. Shouldn't be too much different though. Go into C:\users and your account name, apps data, roaming and you will fine a large folder called Thunderbird. Copy this folder to a flash drive, plug the drive into the second computer and replace the Thunderbird folder on the second computer with the one on the flash drive. The second computer now has all the settings, folders etc like the first computer. To be on the safe side, first rename the Thunderbird folder on the second computer rather than just deleting it in case something goes wrong. Also, keep a copy of the Thunderbird folder on the flash drive as a backup. HTH Neville. On 9/08/2015 1:02 AM, Christopher-Mark Gilland via Talk wrote: Guys, I have a question.
