dinging mouse

2016-02-18 Thread Neville via Talk

Hi,

Please ignore my message, a copy of which appears below, because the
mouse keys are now working correctly.

Once a week I bak up my system so just replaced the existing WE default
folder and problem gone. A setting of some sort must have been changed
some how but thanks to the back up, a problem no longer.

Neville.

Using: Latest WE, W7 HP 32 bit,

When an attempt is made to go down the screen with the mouse keys it
only dings although the arrow keys work as normal. This behaviour
happens on the Desktop, in Thunderbird and it seems, everywhere else.
This behaviour has only started in the past couple of days.

The mouse boundry is set to active window but all boundaries give the
same result.

The correct set file is loaded and associated.

The screen is maximized.

All apps were turned off for a while but no difference there either.

I am wondering if it is the keyboard layout command but can not find the
command to invoke or disable it.

Has anyone got any ideas on what else can be tried? This is driving me
nuts.

Cheers
Neville.

tricks when losing focus in a program

2016-02-18 Thread Elizabeth via Talk
One of the things I do when a program loses focus is make sure my
Window is maximized using alt-X followed by the spacebar.

I also use the command to redraw the screen insert-backslash.
Those of you losing focus with email clients may perhaps find these
tricks useful.

RE: Is WindowEyes Causing All Internet And Other Crashes?

2016-02-18 Thread Rod Hutton via Talk
Hi Neville,

As you no doubt recall, you and I discussed the issue of the default Table
header setting being to read colum and row headers.
While I can certainly confirm that this setting is the default, on
reflection I think it was an attempt by the developer to give a consistent
starting-point for table navigation.
Wile, at first, I found this setting to be a nuisance, (especially given the
fact that it bothered me that perhaps something serious was wrong), over the
last month or so I have come to appreciate that it may indeed be a stroke of
genious on the part of the developer.
This is because at least it gives the user a lot of information which might
be helpful as they encounter new tables whose structure they do not know
yet.
I'm learning to see the good intentions of software developers.
"They need to create somewhat safe initial settings for their software,
especially given that not all, if not few, users are savvy
Besides, it only takes a few presses of Control-Shift-H to rotor to the
setting you like.

With respect,

Rod

some WE issues are better

2016-02-18 Thread Tony C via Talk
Hi, I just did another emergency removal of WE a few hours ago. This time while
re-installing WE, when it got to the Java access bridge I got a message that
I’ve not gotten before, “no valid java installed” it told me to go to Orcale
and install Java and then re-install the access bridge. I haven’t done this and
Mark S. suggested that I not do so unless I really needed Java for a program.
Well anyway, things seem much better now.

RE: Is WindowEyes Causing All Internet And Other Crashes?

2016-02-18 Thread Rod Hutton via Talk
Hi Tony,

Please take this in the spirit in which it is intended, that is, to help you
have a more pleasant email reading and writing experience.
I have found the need to move first from WLM to Thunderbird and then from
Thunderbird to Outlook.
The need to do this was the result of finding it extremely difficult, if not
impossible, to experience reliable cursor tracking.
Since moving to Outlook a couple of years ago, I have not had any cursor
tracking problems.
In short, I've had to care for my problem myself, rather than wait for AI
Squared to solve it.
I would like to suggest that you move to another email client, and, again, I
intend this in order to help you.
Three years is much too long, in my opinion, to force yourself to put up
with these problems.
As I've said to others, I believe we have the best chance to have an
accessible email client if we use Outlook, as it is part of the Office
suite, a widely-used Microsoft product.

With respect,

Rod Hutton

Well, Guys, again I got one or two emails from Chris at Ai Squared and when
his first two questions and answers didn't fix the problem, I haven't heard
another word from them. II t's been 2 days now since I replied to the last
message and have gotten not even a "kis our foot" for a reply. How could
they possibally fix anything if they ask two questions, give the same two
ideas and if that don't work they just ignore your reply and move on to
something else? As I've said before I've been reporting the issues with WLM
now for 3 years and still sometimes I can read and correct what I've written

in a email message and sometimes I cannot. What the heck??

Hello Rick,

No, you are not imagining problems in WE 9.X.

A I Squared seems to be annoyingly silent about solutions or even
recognizing there are those, for what ever reasons, WE 9.X just does not
work reliably.

By now, I would think Tech Support would have loads of notes about the
configuration of systems that are having problems. I would think they
could start noticing patterns and recognize equipment that either needs
to be updated, or switched out for something else.

I believe WE 9 has issues with memory. On my system, if I left the
system stay idle for two three hours, and then start using it, it is a
matter of minutes before I get a lock up, Speech goes quiet, or an
outright Freeze of the system. All requiring a total shut down and
re-start. Rarely does using the short cut key to re-start WE 9, work.

I do not wish to buy JAWS, or even entertain going over to JAWS. I like
WE and have used it for years. I wish A I Squared was a bit more up
front with their customers, but remaining quiet, which gives the
impression they are ignoring problems, seems to be their way of
communicating
with customers.Ignoring problems is not a smart way to run a
business, and if done long enough, the problems do not go away, but the
customers do.

Even if A I Squared would say, Yes, we have a problem on some systems.
We are not sure just why some have issues and others do not, but we are
working on finding a solution.even something like this would at
least keep me from pulling my hair out, thinking that the problem could
be my system, or something in it that is causing issues.

Honesty goes a long way in keeping my loyalty. Silence on the other
hand makes me feel as if I am ignored.

I keep thinking if I had more memeory, that just maybe WE 9 would work a
bit better. Any here with 16 GB of RAM having problems with WE locking
up, or Speech going away?

Grumpy Dave

Something To Try For IE Lockups

2016-02-18 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: I sent a complete message about 2:00 this afternoon but I havent seen it
hit the list so:
If you are familiar with IE Tools and settings try and report the results:
Open Internet Explorer Browser;
Under the Tools  menu  click Internet Options  then
highlight the  Advanced  tab and put a checkmark in front of "Use software
rendering instead of GPU rendering and click ok.
I did this and tried Internet explorer and it crashed again but this time
the
(atiumdva.dll)
Was the culprit.
I ReBooted and tried again and on one webpage I did a read to end on a
article and mid article I heard windowEyes stop for a second, about of 1
second of what sounded like music or an add and then WindowEyes continued
reading the article like nothing happened.
After that I went through several pages and articles with no more crashes
and WindowEyes seems to be reading much faster and responsive now.
I dont know if this is a fix or not but if you know what I am talking about
try it out and post up if it fixes your problems.

In the past when a new update for WE was released, users had a chance to
try it out and report any bugs found so they could be fixed before the
final release. But now, a new version is released with no trial period
at all. If any bugs are found, then this must wait until the next
release whenever that may be.

I am having an issue with not being able to permantly stop table column
and row headers being read although they are turned off in the WE
control panel. This bug has been reported and catelogued for a fix in a
future version but that may not be for quite some months. I wish they
would bring back the testing period prior to the final release.

Well Mark, I might not be as negative if this hadn't been going on for so

If email isn't an efficient way to handle things why is there a email tech
support link on the web page? I have called before talked to Doug about some
of these very issues, gave him remote asscess to my windows 8 pc but when
all was said and done nothing was resolved. You can pass this on to Chris if
you like. I just did an emergency remove of WE and reinstalled from the
download that Ai sent me and I have not installed any of the app upgrades
and have not installed the up grade to 9.3x yet. Everything seems to be
working beautifully so far. I've gottem on facebook, I'm writing this reply
to your message, and am able to read what I've written.I do have a question,
I got a message at the end of install telling me there was novalid java
access bridge, and that I need to go to Orcal and install it. Should I
install Jave or could that be what was causing the issue?I'm sorry to be

I think this just goes to show that email is not an efficient way to
communicate about complex matters such as these. Again, I would recommend
picking up the phone and calling support. It also might be helpful if you
could try to tone down the negativity. I don't think it motivating anyone to
go out of their way to help you trouble shoot the problems you are
encountering. By the way, I have seen McAfee reak havoc and conflict with

I am using adblock Plus with Internet Explorer.
I do sometimes get lockups. But not often, perhaps once or twice a week. The
lockups seem to happen on sites with dynamic content and, strangely, on the

I am using Window-eyes 8.4 on an old XP machine with 4 GB of memory and IE

In the case of Web Root Security Anywhere, it was not white-listed. This
means that the antivirus software grabs some of the DLL files and corrupts
your installation of WE.

We know this as we have experience with it on both a Windows 8.1 machine as
well as a Windows 10 machine. Chris Grabowski confirmed that this product
did not white-list WE.

We finally got Web Root Security Anywhere removed from both machines with
the help of Best Buy's Geek Squad. Once this was done, Ray re-installed 9.0
on the Windows 8.1 machine and downloaded 9.3 and all is working as it
should.

He was unable to use the installation he had on our external hard drive as
Web Root corrupted that installation. For this reason, he went to AI
Squared's website and downloaded 9.3 for my Windows 10 mahine as the method
he used for the Windows 8.1 machine would not work. I am happy to say that I
am now running WE 9.3 on this machine and I'm one happy camper.

If anyone offers you Web Root Security Anywhere, run from it as it grabs DLL
files and corrupts your WE installation.

I would agree that accessibility of antivirus packages is the next frontier
in accessibility to technology.

Hi: Yes, I had allot of focus problems due to that popup.
This is one reason I am still concerned that WindowEyes is not handling them
properly and there are likely others happening.
Often I would hear "give us feedback" even after turning this off in the
Windows10 settings, think it was "send us feedback" before I turned it off.
Now when I switch pages or open a new program I will hear "Clear" or "clear
button" meaning something else is popping up that I cant find after I hear
it read using any of the WindowEyes keys so far.
There a lot of moving parts to Windows and how the screen reader handles
them can be a problem for focus, insert position and the relationship
between them me thinks.
That message is one thing that pushed me over the edge and convinced me to
upgrade to Windows10 but I am not sure that just turning that message off,
some folks had figured out a way to do it, I would have been happier with
Windows8.1 or whatever it was.
Anyway, there should be a way to turn off that popup and perhaps someone
will RePost the solution.

never have this happen with jaws or nvda. nothing happens like this the
crashs always acure with window eyes.

On 2/18/2016 3:04 AM, Rick Thomas via Talk wrote:

Reading the postings it seems that this problem is not unique to WindowEyes
but is perhaps worse in WindowEyes.
There are indications that it happens most often in Internet Explorer or, at
least, is most identifyable in InternetExplorer with the dialog that
InternetExplorer says the program is not responding (same dialog when JAWS
locked up in Internet Explorer) but WindowEyes will not usually notify you
the problem has occurred and just locks up - this should be fixed by
AISquared so we can be notified and close the offending program.
Note that it is likely not Internet Explorer lockinng up but some program
being called or used by Internet Explorer like one that might display an ad
or flash or something because closing the program that is not responding
does not close Internet Explorer but after closing the program not
responding you are still in Internet Explorer and can continue working in
that program.
Some have noticed better results when not using background processes like
the automagic update of synced programs like cloud related programs, note
that OneNote and other things that come with our Operating Systems also can
be using these types of features by default.
Also, there allot of Live Tiles that will access the internet automagically
and send or gather information from external online web pages and, or, web
services which is akin to using a cloud service in that both have to access
something on the internet and thus prone to internet transmission and many
other problems.
Even programs that you would think wouldn't access the internet from your
desktop might be doing something online behind the scenes so this is one
possible avenue but tonarrow things down we can do a few things.
First, you folks who use Mazilla and Chrome for your browsers, have you
noticed any lockups at all using WindowEyes?
Second, the next time I get a Internet Explorer lockup I will try and hit
the Debug button instead of the close button to see what I can find out
about the error like what program(s) are related to it if the error will
give me that much detail.
I forget the WindowEyes hot key to copy a MessageBox which is usually not
able to be read with the normal arrow keys, anyone remember it off the top
of your head?

Wouldn't it be nice for the Ai Squared staff to chime in on this topic.
They could outline for us what issues that WE has with IE, whether the
cloud is a issue and so on. In the past the staff always says it is a
issue with IE and not WE but a better explaination sure would be nice.
We waited for years for a browse mode update and things do work better
but as we have seen there are still issues.

Note also, that JAWS 17 added a feature to automatically restart itself if it
can’t talk to the window that has focus for 5 seconds. This essentially solves
the lockup problem for JAWS, at the expense of a 5 second hang and any non
saved options being lost.

I expect we could probably write an App that does essentially the same thing,
perhaps with an little extra nudge from an outside program. UNIX developers
have often build in auto restart service functionality.

Would there be interest from the community to have a auto-restart when hung
functionality in WindowEyes?

I am using adblock Plus with Internet Explorer.
I do sometimes get lockups. But not often, perhaps once or twice a
week. The lockups seem to happen on sites with dynamic content and,
strangely, on the BARD site.
I am using Window-eyes 8.4 on an old XP machine with 4 GB of memory
and IE 8. Yes, I know it is old but it isn't giving me trouble. And
yes, I know it is less secure than later versions of IE. So we can
skip that part of the discussion for now.

RE: Is WindowEyes Causing All Internet And Other Crashes?

2016-02-18 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk

John,

The cloud is just a generic term for any off-site server you use to
backup and store data, either just for yourself or for sharing. iCloud,
Amazon, One drive, Google drive, Dropbox, SendSpace, and so on are all
the same thing. The only difference with iCloud and Amazon is that my
iPhone can automatically backup to iCloud every time it's plugged in and
all Amazon MP3 purchases are automatically put on their cloud servers.
They all have free stub services designed to suck you into purchasing
more space once you fill them up.

Regards,
Tom

Re: Jarte and PDF?

2016-02-18 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

David,

You're not missing anything. Jarte is nothing more than Microsoft
Wordpad on steroids. It can open Txt, RTF, Doc, and Docx files. That's it.

They may have meant QRead. It's not free. But it's a great program that
can read PDF, Bookshare, Word, HTML, CHM, XML, ePub, etc. It's $30.00.

Hth,
Tom

to make it open any PDF files. If I try, via the File menu of the
program, to open a PDF, all that happens is that Internet Explorer
opens, with the document. Well, if that is all the Jarte does with this
file format, I could have done things in IE directly, couldn't I?

So, is there any clue here, that I am not aware of? Or, is Jarte only
good for Word documents?

Thanks for any feedback.

RE: Is WindowEyes Causing All Internet And Other Crashes?

2016-02-18 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
A side note, anyone else?
I was just in internet explorer in the website where I get allot of lockups.
I got none but it is about 4:30 am so likely little net traffic here and not
allot of dynamic, flash and other ads being scheduled since they don't want
to waste money with ads when few people are online in this area.
Now, when I closed internet explorer and returned to my desktop program I
heard a ca ching and WindowEyes said there was no information bar, think it
was information bar and then I was placed into my desktop program as usual.
I used alt-f4 to close internet explorer so this message should not have
happened unless WindowEyes was confused about something and so I thought I
would see if others have heard this or something similar.
It may indicate WindowEyes processing a message or something like being in
the wrong script or something if it happens so it was unusual, happened and
we need to see if it is happening often enough to be in consideration when
thinking about internet explorer, focus and intermittant problems we are
encountering.
But if others are not having these types of problems we might not need to
include them in looking at the problem at hand - don't know but it was an
incorrect response by WindowEyes to a simple alt-f4 to close internet
explorer.

RE: Is WindowEyes Causing All Internet And Other Crashes?

2016-02-18 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk

Explorer to close. Often I w.ould have to wait for WE to read those
messages and finding the dialog boxes was difficult. Now the only time
I seem to get the, internet explorer has stopped working, messages is
when I am watching a video from dailymotion.com. I have no problem
finding the window and the button to aledgedly close the program.

Hi:
I get allot of situations, especially in Internet Explorer, where WindowEyes
will stop speaking either for several seconds or entirely.
This happens very often.
Sometimes I fire up narrator and hear the program is not responding and
click the close button and windoweyes will come back.
If anyone else is experiencing these types of problems have you determined
if this is unique to WindowEyes or if it happens often with other screen
readers.
I noticed on e*trade windoweyes would not expand a item labeled Tax
Documents but JAWS did eexpand it so I could access the list of links to get
to my tax documents and it made me wonder if this new html5 stuff and how
the browsers handle it is causing WindowEyes problems and perhaps causing it
to try and navigate around looking for something it cant find and thus
causing delays and, in some cases, crashes when things get locked up.
I can run some tests using JAWS, havent done that yet, but don't have nor
understand how to use nvda correctly so thought I would ask if anyone else
has noticed these types of problems in WindowEyes and worked around them
with other screen readers to determine if it is unique to mysituation or if
this is a problem worth looking at trying to narrow down via testing and
getting some more specifics for the WE Staff if they are interested in our
test results.
