Have you called them to downgrade to home version?  I started out with
pro, but they suggested home because it was cheaper and since I was not
working at a workplace, it made sense to change.

Yes, when I bought window eyes, it was all one price. I bought it when they

Hi Lynn,

My apologies if the names I called those at the top of the tree in VFO
offended you. My sheer anger and frustration has overwhelmed me. It is
rarely I make such statements and more so on this list. I've never been so
angry or upset at a situation where blind people will be forced to pay much
more than they are just now. Please believe me it won't be the same price as
now. That I can guarantee. Just look at the price of Microsoft windows 365
office. Remember, that is not just for one or two years. that is for life.
When we bought a copy of Office that copy lasted and will last for years.
I'm still using a 2007 copy of office on my windows 7 machine. If I had paid
a monthly subscription for that length of time. I could have bought at least
8 copied of office.

I could say a lot more Lynn regarding the merger and subsequent demise of
Window-eyes. Call it conspiracy theory or not. Had this happened in the up
they would have been referred to the Monopolies commission. I don't
apologies for using those names because that is how I feel towards them.
Them meaning those at the top. Not the employees. I am not normally this way
about things and don't easily get annoyed. People that know me would agree
with that. I hate to see blind or disabled people getting ripped off and
treated the way we are.

I recently learned that companies who produce adaptive technology for the
disabled and blind get government grants. How much I have no idea. I have a
copy of jws and will continue to use window-eyes till I can't use it any
more.

Live long and prosper, John

I'm in your boat, brother! I won't ever purchase any app that's
subscription based even if the cost is 50 cents a year! Sounds horrible but
I can live with it. Like B J, I have been using Office 2007; even though I
received a note from Microsoft that support for Office 2007 has ended, it is
still serving me well and I am yet to find a need for an upgrade to the
latest Office bell and whistle. I read about folks struggling with
something called Back Stage and how to disable it. Yikes, make an app
better if necessary, just don't make it too complicated in order to get this
done.

I'm interested in knowing whether or not the laws in the books can be
invoked when it comes to dealing with adaptive app and equipment companies.
Look at Humanware; it created the BrailleNote Touch and deployed a
deprecated copy of the Android OS on it; it still sells for more than
$5,000! How about HIMS? It claims to run on Android 5.1.1 which will soon
become deprecated as well. And it sells for $6,000! In both situations, no
path for an upgrade and, worst still, the freedom Android offers is
nonexistent. Example: In Android Land, you can install and use your own
preferred TTS engine. What nonsense if I dare say so!

For as long as is possible, I shall continue to look at products in the
mainstream. As I slowly KISS WINDOWS goodbye, I won't have to worry about
the shenanigans of screen reader developers for this OS! I will not pay one
cent for any type of Jaws subscription. Until my WINDOWS machines all die
naturally, I'll STICK WITH WINDOW-EYES which still PUTS SOME GREAT FOOD on
my wee, small table!

Olusegun

Actually some VR agencies did provide Window-Eyes. For instants, here is a
post from the NVDA mailing list, by a lady. Here is what she has to say on
the subject.

From: n...@nvda.groups.io [mailto:n...@nvda.groups.io] On Behalf Of Sally

Subject: Re: [nvda] WebAim Screen Reader User Survey #7: Getting The Word
Out About NVDA

Whole-heartedly agree here! I was raised in Indiana which is probably the
only reason I was offered Window-Eyes by my Voc Rehab office. Many others I
met out of state a guide dog school and college had never heard of
Window-Eyes let alone been given the chance to test it before being provided
JAWS. In the case that they had heard of it, they assumed it was incomplete
or inferior because it had never been recommended or offered to them.

Too often, the able-bodied powers that be --for a variety of reasons
including lack of interest or bandwidth-- learn 1 version of adaptive
technology for a given disability and recommend only that one for ever
after. Even if their job is to advise or help those new to the disability,
they do not take the time to research and present all options. Government
funding and contracts may be a large part of this but so is ignorance. I
worked for a few years at a prominent eye hospital that had a rehab
department and no one in the building knew about window-eyes or that android
devices were used by the blind. In this case, I know that there were no
contracts or government funding--- only the common mental shorthand of
stereotyping the outgroup. Because they ad seen more than one blind person
with an iPhone or had heard of JAWS, clearly all people used iPhones and
JAWS because that was all they had. Funnily enough they didn't even realize
that VoiceOver existed on Mac OSX since the JAWS stereotype predated iOS.

I am grateful for the choice I had early on and the fact that I knew that
the most common option wasn't the only and wasn't necessarily the best for
me. In my case and at that time, my simultaneous use of ZoomText made
Window-Eyes a much better option.

Cheers,
Sally

Lots of silly comments on this list. Who came to whom regarding the

That's right. And it's the same with upgrading kurzweil 1000. You pay one

One thing some people may have forgotten or were not on board with WE
early enough was thay they also charged extra for pro versions of
Window-Eyes. It seems to me that it was at least $100 more than the
standard version because I did not have pro and a friend did. When the
time came that I needed pro, I did have to find the money to do so. The
difference between the two companies is that all upgrades cost the same
for WE and JFW charges more for the pro version upgrades.

B J wrote in part:

"When we bought a copy of Office that copy lasted and will last for years.
I'm still using a 2007 copy of office on my windows 7 machine. If I had
paid
a monthly subscription for that length of time. I could have bought at
least

8 copied of office."

I'm in your boat, brother! I won't ever purchase any app that's
subscription based even if the cost is 50 cents a year! Sounds horrible
but
I can live with it. Like B J, I have been using Office 2007; even though
I
received a note from Microsoft that support for Office 2007 has ended, it
is

still serving me well and I am yet to find a need for an upgrade to the
latest Office bell and whistle. I read about folks struggling with
something called Back Stage and how to disable it. Yikes, make an app
better if necessary, just don't make it too complicated in order to get
this

done.

I'm interested in knowing whether or not the laws in the books can be
invoked when it comes to dealing with adaptive app and equipment
companies.

Look at Humanware; it created the BrailleNote Touch and deployed a
deprecated copy of the Android OS on it; it still sells for more than
$5,000! How about HIMS? It claims to run on Android 5.1.1 which will
soon
become deprecated as well. And it sells for $6,000! In both situations,
no

path for an upgrade and, worst still, the freedom Android offers is
nonexistent.

I will not pay
one

cent for any type of Jaws subscription. Until my WINDOWS machines all die
naturally, I'll STICK WITH WINDOW-EYES which still PUTS SOME GREAT FOOD on
my wee, small table!

Sincerely,
Olusegun
Denver, Colorado

Haven't heard this either. I just purchase a SMA for Fusion that supposed to
give me upgrades for two years. A guess you could call a SMA a type of
subscription, to keep the latest version you have to pay for an upgrade every
year.

I found out these companies get funding from the government. I was really
annoyed as well.

I too will never subscribe to jws and stick with window-eyes till I can't
use it any more.

Have a great wekend Brother.

Live long and prosper, John

I'm in your boat, brother! I won't ever purchase any app that's

but
I can live with it. Like B J, I have been using Office 2007; even though
I
received a note from Microsoft that support for Office 2007 has ended, it
is

still serving me well and I am yet to find a need for an upgrade to the
latest Office bell and whistle. I read about folks struggling with

better if necessary, just don't make it too complicated in order to get
this

I will not pay
one

cent for any type of Jaws subscription. Until my WINDOWS machines all die
naturally, I'll STICK WITH WINDOW-EYES which still PUTS SOME GREAT FOOD on
my wee, small table!

$200 less than JAWS.

That could be as you say.  I appreciate everything you have said,
especially the spirit involved.

I hope that nobody sees my comments as being anti Window-Eyes.  I used
Window-Eyes since the days of Windows 95 all the way up to the demise of
GW Micro.  I, too, wish that they could have survived.

I don't get calling a company such silly names. I have always wished
that they would be subscription based. You will spend the same money
but in smaller bites.

It's understandable that subscriptions aren't for everyone. When
Microsoft started such programs, I don't recall calling their approach
the names that you call Freedom Scientific.

Plus, we all forget that, as great as Window-Eyes was, they simply were
running out of money.

I can tell you this, we will know more near the end of this year, or perhaps
when the next version of jaws is released. The systems are being developed as

Hello,
Here is what I do know, from the Freedom Scientific podcast. They want to
change and use your licensing, so that you have the capability of transferring
license is from one machine to another, or removing a license in case of a shut
down. There was nothing mentioned as far as I know, about subscription pricing
for a child’s license.
