Have you called them to downgrade to home version? I started out with pro, but they suggested home because it was cheaper and since I was not working at a workplace, it made sense to change. Yes, when I bought window eyes, it was all one price. I bought it when they had the monthly payment plan. When there were just a few payments left, I opted to pay the rest all at once and finish. I won't ever purchase any app that's subscription based even if the cost is 50 cents a year! Sounds horrible but I can live with it. Like B J, I have been using Office 2007; even though I received a note from Microsoft that support for Office 2007 has ended, it is still serving me well and I am yet to find a need for an upgrade to the latest Office bell and whistle. I read about folks struggling with something called Back Stage and how to disable it. Yikes, make an app better if necessary, just don't make it too complicated in order to get this done. I'm interested in knowing whether or not the laws in the books can be invoked when it comes to dealing with adaptive app and equipment companies. Look at Humanware; it created the BrailleNote Touch and deployed a deprecated copy of the Android OS on it; it still sells for more than $5,000! How about HIMS? It claims to run on Android 5.1.1 which will soon become deprecated as well. And it sells for $6,000! In both situations, no path for an upgrade and, worst still, the freedom Android offers is nonexistent. Example: In Android Land, you can install and use your own preferred TTS engine. What nonsense if I dare say so! For as long as is possible, I shall continue to look at products in the mainstream. As I slowly KISS WINDOWS goodbye, I won't have to worry about the shenanigans of screen reader developers for this OS! I will not pay one cent for any type of Jaws subscription. Until my WINDOWS machines all die naturally, I'll STICK WITH WINDOW-EYES which still PUTS SOME GREAT FOOD on my wee, small table! RE: `news about jws
Actually some VR agencies did provide Window-Eyes. For instants, here is a post from the NVDA mailing list, by a lady. Here is what she has to say on the subject. From: n...@nvda.groups.io [mailto:n...@nvda.groups.io] On Behalf Of Sally Kiebdaj Sent: Friday, October 06, 2017 5:44 AM To: n...@nvda.groups.io Subject: Re: [nvda] WebAim Screen Reader User Survey #7: Getting The Word Out About NVDA Whole-heartedly agree here! I was raised in Indiana which is probably the only reason I was offered Window-Eyes by my Voc Rehab office. Many others I met out of state a guide dog school and college had never heard of Window-Eyes let alone been given the chance to test it before being provided JAWS. In the case that they had heard of it, they assumed it was incomplete or inferior because it had never been recommended or offered to them. Too often, the able-bodied powers that be --for a variety of reasons including lack of interest or bandwidth-- learn 1 version of adaptive technology for a given disability and recommend only that one for ever after. Even if their job is to advise or help those new to the disability, they do not take the time to research and present all options. Government funding and contracts may be a large part of this but so is ignorance. I worked for a few years at a prominent eye hospital that had a rehab department and no one in the building knew about window-eyes or that android devices were used by the blind. In this case, I know that there were no contracts or government funding--- only the common mental shorthand of stereotyping the outgroup. Because they ad seen more than one blind person with an iPhone or had heard of JAWS, clearly all people used iPhones and JAWS because that was all they had. Funnily enough they didn't even realize that VoiceOver existed on Mac OSX since the JAWS stereotype predated iOS. I am grateful for the choice I had early on and the fact that I knew that the most common option wasn't the only and wasn't necessarily the best for me. In my case and at that time, my simultaneous use of ZoomText made Window-Eyes a much better option. I'm in your boat, brother! Haven't heard this either. I just purchase a SMA for Fusion that supposed to give me upgrades for two years.
One thing some people may have forgotten or were not on board with WE early enough was thay they also charged extra for pro versions of Window-Eyes. It seems to me that it was at least $100 more than the standard version because I did not have pro and a friend did. When the time came that I needed pro, I did have to find the money to do so. The difference between the two companies is that all upgrades cost the same for WE and JFW charges more for the pro version upgrades. I'll be switching completely to my Shiny Android, screen reader is FREE and there are no silly bells and whistles! And, sure enough, kill the competition then hold a sledgehammer to everyone's throat! Let's hope the BLIND community wises up and refuses the nonsense. Hello, Here is what I do know, from the Freedom Scientific podcast. They want to change and use your licensing, so that you have the capability of transferring license is from one machine to another, or removing a license in case of a shut down. There was nothing mentioned as far as I know, about subscription pricing for a child’s license.
