Yeah if it's only a link, that's the easiest. I occasionally have an
issue when there is only one line of text such as a URL without a link.
I'd like to avoid having to right arrow through the entire URL. Is
there a way to copy the URL without right arrowing?

Re: Selecting text with thunderbird

2017-01-19 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
The F8 method only works when in browse mode. So when viewing a message
in browse mode you need to use it. When writing a message you have to
use the standard shifted keys method.

When in browse mode and on a link just press home to go to the beginning
and then F8 twice. this will select the entire link.

When you have the text of a link but it doesn't register as a link, or
whenever you want to select a line, home to the beginning, F8, end to
the end, F8, and you've selected and copied that line.

Hth,
Tom

Hi there!

When selecting text using W.E. do the following. Place the pointer at
the beginning of what you wish to hi-light and press the F8 key. W.E.
should say 'selection start'. when you are through hi-light the text
press the 'F8 key' again and W.e. should say something like 'copied to
clipboard'. It took a bit of getting use to, but I use it now about as
easily as I did the old way. Good Luck and Have A Good 1! de

Find the biginning of the text you want to select. Press the F8 key to
mark the beginning. Find the end of the text you want and press the F8
key again. Press enter on the copy plain text button to copy the text
to the clipboaard. Of course, I am assuming you are using the latest

Depending:

Sometimes a link in an email, f8 twice works, other times, I hit at the
first character, then I keep arrowing right until I hdar a ding, then I
backup one character and then hit f8, it works every time
More work, but it has never failed.

Occasionally, I receive e-mails with links to various Youtube videos,
except that I only receive the URL without a link to click on.
Generally what I do is copy using the f-8 method and the right arrow
key. While it is tedious, this method is not much more than a minor
annoyance. But here is my question, I have tried copying the link using
the down arrow key (of course, after I have pressed f-8) and it doesn't
always work. This happens especially when the URL is at the bottom of
the e-mail. I have tried placing the cursor above the URL and then down
arrowing, and that seems to copy the text above, instead of the URL.
Have I made this confusing enough?

I am not copying a link, I am copying a URL. The reason it is not a

Re: selecting text

2016-09-01 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Nick,

I've never had the problem you mention. So I don't know what to say. I
just go to the start, press F8, move to the end using whatever method is
the quickest, press f8 again, and it copies whatever I've selected.

The only exception I've experienced which is similar to what you're
saying is when the link is long and broken over more then one line. Then
it usually doesn't work anyway because there's a space inserted at the
line break. So I copy the two lines, pop up Notepad, paste, get rid of
the space, and copy it again.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Regards,
Tom

Assuming the url is the only thing on the line:
Home, then f8, end, then f8 again and finally enter.
You could always do control-right to move after the url, press f8, then home,

arrow keys to end, then control C. Maybe that will work for you. It's line by
line, but works for me.

to regular program still in progress. Andrew

Chris,

As I think I have made quite clear in my previous posts to Rod, I have no
problem doing what is necessary to assure that I have indeed selected an
entire word unit using f8, that is moving from the first letter of the word
to the last character and once again pressing f8. I will take
f8 on its own turns. But It is been proven to me by my own hand that in text
editors or word processors, that using ctrl-right or left arrow, while maybe
appearing to only select or unselect the first letter, actually select the
entire word, and that can be proven simply by copying what has been selected
and placing it at the end of the document, and taking a look at your work.

Again, technically, you may indeed be right, but for all intents and
purposes, the entire word unit is selected.

I am not demanding a change when it comes to f8, all though I really would
find it more convenient to be able to by default, select an entire word
unit, rather than just the first letter, because that is usually what is
meant by using the ctrl-shift arrow keys when editing as normally excepted
standard procedure.

As I've indicated, this isn't the proverbial show-stopper, just a relatively
minor irritation.

Indeed, if most users of this method have no problem with the present state
of affairs, I am willing to concede my minority status and get on with the
rest of my life .

Have a great day, and keep up your great work,

Larry

Re: selecting text and f8 key

2016-07-16 Thread Larry Higgins via Talk
Hey Rod, Again I say, in every other application where I go to select
text , in any other editor, or word processor, the ctrl-shift-arrow keys
selects the entire word, f8 is the exception.

I've even copied your message into Wordpad, and this is the behavior,
but not with f8. Can I make this any clearer?

As I've indicated in previous posts on this matter, I am willing to do
what I have to do to get the results I want, but this little minor
readjustment to f8, or brows Mode selectivity would surely be appreciated.

you must arrow right so that the last character in the word is focused
before you press F8 for the second time.

Well Pam, here is an example. I just copied from a message about an up
coming Internet radio show, using f8 and this is how it came out after I
used the right arrow with the control keys to highlight words.

"After a two-week absence, I'm back with my top Shelf Oldies s."

That last word is supposed to be show. Now if I continue arrowing without
holding down the ctrl key, I can take in the whole word, but not when using
the ctrl key.

As in some other cases, this isn't a show stopper, just an inconvenience. I
can live with it, just wish I didn't have too .

2016-07-16 Thread Rod Hutton via Talk
Hi Larry,

You're experience is consistent and makes perfect sense as far as what Is
supposed to happen, that is, the last character which is selected is and
should be the character which is currently focused.
So, if you want the entire word to be included in the block of text, then
you must arrow right so that the last character in the word is focused
before you press F8 for the second time.

Re: selecting text and f8 key

2016-07-15 Thread Larry Higgins via Talk
I feel the need to interject her to say that when using the F8 method in
brows mode control and right arrow keys to highlight words, that on the
last desired word, that you must at that point highlight each individual
character up to the end, because you will only get the first character
on that last word. Just a quirk of the F8 way of doing things, but a
fact/quirk nevertheless.,

Of course, if you just wish to use the home and end keys for selecting
to the end of a line, then this is not an issue, but if you wish to lift
only a word or two, this could get to be rather frustrating until you
figure it out. I mean, it just isn't supposed to work that way.

2016-07-15 Thread Reg Webb via Talk
Hi Don

The shift key is no good to you in browse mode. All you need to do is
press F8 at the biginning of the selection, and then arrow down, or page
down, or use any means you like to get to the end of the selection, and
press F8 again. This is with browse mode turned on remember.
Conventional selection will work inside edit boxes with browse mode
turned off.

Don,
Here is a knowledge base article that explains the F8 text selection for Browse
Mode: www.gwmicro.com/kb2064. There is a link in the article to an MP3 audio
demonstration of using this functionality. If you are not in Browse Mode, use
the traditional text selection techniques that use Shift and cursor keys (e.g.
Up Arrow, Down Arrow, Left Arrow, Right Arrow, Home, End, etc.).
Best,

You're correct, Larry. The only thing I would add is that you can move
to the beginning and end of the text you want to select using any
browse mode method, ie. Home to beginning of line, End to end of line,
Control-Home, Control-End, and any other browse mode hot keys. This is
because F8 is only applicable while within browse mode; nowhere else.
And this is where it can get confusing.

Let's say you're on a web page. F8 is the only selection method while
in browse mode. Then you exit browse mode and enter an edit box.
You're no longer in browse mode and F8 does not apply. Standard
Shifted key selection must be used here. The same goes for reading and
replying to email messages, assuming your email client displays
messages in browse mode.

Rod, that's absolutely right. I guess it didn't occur to me to mention
that because I usually find myself either selecting a word or name when
reading a Web page. I might wish to Google either one, and kinda find
this a bit annoying since I usually don't need to work to the end of a
line. Not that I wont, and the home and end keys really do come in
handy, but it sure would be nice if that could be modified in a future
upgrade. But who knows, there might be a good reason unbeknownst to me
to just keep it the way it is.

Re: selecting text

2016-01-13 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
You're correct, Larry. The only thing I would add is that you can move
to the beginning and end of the text you want to select using any browse
mode method, ie. Home to beginning of line, End to end of line,
Control-Home, Control-End, and any other browse mode hot keys. This is
because F8 is only applicable while within browse mode; nowhere else.
And this is where it can get confusing.

Let's say you're on a web page. F8 is the only selection method while in
browse mode. Then you exit browse mode and enter an edit box. You're no
longer in browse mode and F8 does not apply. Standard Shifted key
selection must be used here. The same goes for reading and replying to
email messages, assuming your email client displays messages in browse mode.

Tom

One thing you might also remember, that if you should use the ctrl key

On the whole I've really come to like the F8 arrangement, because you

the text by pressing either header keys or tabs. It just works so

Hi Larry,

I totally agree with your note about selecting the end position.
If you're selecting up to the last character on the line, then you could use
the End key, or drop down to the next line, press Home and it's pretty much
the same.

Sonya, one Caveat, this method only works in files where brows mode is
used, otherwise you can use the old shift+arrow keys to perform this
function.

At first, you might wonder why this should be so necessary, or at least
convenient. One way I find this method to be useful is when I wish to
select text from a web page, say from header to header or from link to
link. The F8 method locks the selection in place so that you don't have
to move manually through so much text in order to make that selection.
You don't even have to worry about accidentally losing your selected
text along the way, which can get quite frustrating. Instead, you can
just press the h or shift+h keys and voila, you have made your
selection, and you can once again press the F8 key where there will be a
dialog box with the option to copy the text to the clipboard where from
there you can copy your selected text to an editor or what ever. I
really hope the people at I Squared never do away with this new method
of selecting because it works so well, even though occasionally I forget
to press the button to copy selected text to the clipboard.

Re: Selecting text using Word Pad

2015-11-03 Thread Larry Higgins via Talk
Well it sure doesn't work here, and I've checked set file associations,
and that is correct.

I did Take Net Bat's suggestion and just save the file to .txt rather
than .rtf, and as it opened up in Note Pad, I was then able to select
using the shift-arrow combination, and it worked like a charm, or at
least the way it is supposed too.

I've been trying to do this the standard way, by using the shift
arrow keys, but to no avail. At At first, I thought that WE 9.2 just
refused to read the selected text, but now I find that WP just
doesn't carry out the process. I am using WP to accomplish what I
consider small tasks, like in this case, keeping a listing of
recommended books for a friend which includes annotations, or maybe
for future downloading from Bookshare and the like.

I know I could use MSWord, but I really don't wish to open up such a

But if any one could please help me with this one I would really

Well it sure doesn't work here, and I've checked set file associations,
and that is correct.

I did Take Net Bat's suggestion and just save the file to .txt rather
than .rtf, and as it opened up in Note Pad, I was then able to select
using the shift-arrow combination, and it worked like a charm, or at
least the way it is supposed too.

I've been trying to do this the standard way, by using the shift arrow keys,

Re: Selecting text using Word Pad

2015-11-03 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
Neither PDF or RTF are graphic formats. PDF files can be scanned images.
But most are not. RTF (rich text format) is essentially a scaled down
version of Doc or a revved up version of Txt, depending on how you want
to look at it.

I never use Wordpad. But I tried it here on Windows 10. Selection works
fine. The problem is that the text that is selected does not change
color. So Window-Eyes has no way of knowing it is selected. At least
that's what happened here. I was able to cut, copy, and paste. But the
selected text was never voiced when selecting due to no color change.

Now now Net Bat, surely you are kidding. WE definitely reads .rtf files,
that is how I realized that selecting text wouldn't work. I can delete
single characters by using either the del or backspace keys, heck I can
even type in text, so that can't be entirely true.

Can you explain just what you mean?

Re: Selecting text for coppying from a web page

2015-02-21 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Read the ReadMe, Bill the lazy bum! grin. Okay. I'll do it for you.
To select text in the new Browse Mode system, first locate the spot
where you want selection to begin, and press F8. Window-Eyes will say,
selection start. Next, move to the location where you wish selection
to stop, and press F8 again. This time, a dialog box will open
containing three buttons:

 - Copy -- When activated, copies the selection to the clipboard.
You can then paste it into another application, such as Notepad or
Microsoft Word. Note that pasting into a simple text editor like Notepad
will merely cause the text of the selected content to appear, whereas
pasting into a full-fledged word processor like Microsoft Word will
retain all text formatting and images that are contained in the selection.
 - Reset Selection Start -- When activated, sets the start of the
selection to the current Browse Mode location.

 - Cancel -- When activated, closes the dialog without doing anything.

Note that this new selection command mirrors how a fully sighted
computer user would highlight text with the mouse. In fact, the
selection will be visible on screen just as if a physical mouse was used
rather than F8. Note that in Thunderbird, selecting text works
identically to Internet Explorer and Firefox except that there is no
visual indication that one has taken place. This hot key, which is
called Select Content, can also be changed in the Hot Keys - Browse
Mode section of the Window-Eyes control panel. In addition,
Control-Shift-M will speak the current selection. Finally, be aware that
Window-Eyes will announce whether the copy operation was successful.
