Re: Thunderbird problem
Hello Larry Thank you for your reply. I found Thunderbird became more and more difficult to use after version 60.4.0 and so, I eventually went back to that version. It works well with my 64 bit laptop apart from the editing problems I mentioned previously. I agree WE is becoming less and less useful but I often find We works with somethings that other screen readers cannot cope with. I am intending to keep it on my machines so long as it is useful. Ah yes Rick, what you say is so true. I wish everyone whose found comfort and satisfaction with a particular voice to be able to keep and maintain it. I just wish the people at FS would take seriously this pacing issue. I really can't believe that so many people can be satisfied with such unnatural verbal delivery. I really don't wish to argue about this, because I, at least on this issue, know that my mind can never be changed, not out of stubbornness, but on the knowledge that most people do not speak like JAWS speaks or reads in natural conversation. Re: Window-eyes 9.5.4 and Thunderbird 91.2
I remember back over 30 years ago, when I was trying to put my first PC together, I thought I just had to have Dectalk, because that is what I heard when getting introduced to OCR stand alone products, such as Kurzweil and Arkenstone. When listening to the Kurzweil stand alone, the synth was Dectalk, while the Arkenstone was being demonstrated to me using Artic BusinessVision. I really hated that Artic speech, but due to financial constraints ended up with Artic anyway, and I actually learned to like it. Now, I don't know if I could ever return to Artic After all of these years (even if it were at all possible), but one thing for certain, I cannot stand Dectalk. Re: Window-eyes 9.5.4 and Thunderbird 91.2
Pam, if you are reading email with Thunderbird, you are definitely using browse mode. As a matter of fact, when I go to reply to a message, I must turn off browse mode before I can begin composing the message. Ah, Ive just gotta mention this little funny. When writing the word "composing," I mistakenly wrote the word "composting." Now what I'm telling you about browse mode isn't compost. Try turning on Browse mode and see if that works. Some times the answers and solutions aren't that simple, but who knows, maybe it will work for you. Now as for Eloquence, I'll have to agree with you about the descending pitch in those circumstances, but that isn't quite the deal breaker that the reading delivery is proving to be. And BTW, this issue is not only evident with Eloquence with JFW, but all other synths included with the program as well. I also don't hear the speech as in any way slurred, but if I did, I would also have a problem with it as well. Of course, most of this that we think we hear is indeed quite subjective, with the possible exception of my particular complaint . Long live Eloquence, with all its faults, Larry On 1/8/2022 10:57 AM, Pamela Dominguez via Talk wrote: Browse mode to read emails? I'm not doing it on the web. I agree Larry, WE has been my favorite screen reader since it came out. I still use it as much as possible. The main reason, outside of WE's overall ease of use for sticking with WE has more to do with JAW's read all settings. IMHO, JAWS simply doesn't allow enough of an appropriate pause between the end and beginnings of sentences. It reads in such a way that I simply wouldn't tolerate from a human reader. I mean, if narrators/readers on commercial recordings, or in house so to speak were to read in such a manner, let's just say that they would fail the audition. I say all of this just to say that I am a user of Bookshare, and do quite a bit of reading on my PC, and WE's verbal pacing using Eloquence to me is more human sounding than these more human sounding voices, but only because of the way these people at Vespero (spelling) have chosen to manipulate speech delivery in say all mode. As it stands, when using JAWS, I have to use Code Factory Eloquence, which reads more to my satisfaction, but with another issue. That version of Eloquence simply passes up my favored normal rate of speed of Window-Eyes's 41 to a step or two higher than I' like to read most of the time. Thunderbird
Hi, Not sure whether there are many WE users still on this list but just in case, I have a question. I am running WE 9.5.4. on Windows 10. I use Thunderbird as my email client. All was going well until around the 27th of Nov. then, It appears as though there was an update.. After that, I was no longer receiving email messages on both my gmail and outlook acounts. I have become a bit rusty on win 10 and as I looked around to try and figure what was going on, I couldn't get the messages. So, since I had a pretty good idea of when trouble began, I decided to roll back my system. I discovered a checkpoint on Nov. 26 and after the roll back, all was well and messages poured in. Does anyone have an idea about what might be causing the issue and maybe how to fix it? thanks for any help. Re: Window-eyes 9.5.4 and Thunderbird 91.2
Hi Don, Nice to hear from you again. Smile. As far as the list of Window-Eyes apps to disable, it is interesting to note that, actually, on one of my computers, I did not need to disable any apps, whereas, on another, I did. Also, I don’t think the fact that certain apps are running is the cause of your Thunderbird issue. The simple fact is that I was not even able to get Window-Eyes to launch without throwing multiple errors unless the apps I mentioned were disabled. The process of disabling apps couldn’t even be done at all unless I launched Window-Eyes without any apps starting up, and this is done by holding down the Shift key while launching it. I tend to think that the problem you are having is that which Bernie on the list mentioned when responding to Carol‘s post, namely, the Thunderbird set file is not loading and therefore the screen information presented by Thunderbird is not accessible. Bernie’s suggestion of the steps to get the Thunderbird set file to load should work, but, if it doesn’t, then the set file which you would need to load manually is TBEnhanced, as memory serves. Once you load that set file, you would need to press Control-S in order to save the association of this set file with the application window in question; this association would be to the main Thunderbird application window. At any rate, here is the list I had mentioned some time ago: Window eyes apps to disable Eloquence Fix Hotspot JAWS quick key WEDiag Windows Enhanced Good luck, and I hope this helps, Rod Sent from Outlook<https://aka.ms/sdimjr> for iPad OS From: Talk on behalf of Donald Roberts via Talk Sent: Friday, October 22, 2021 3:08 PM To: talk@lists.window-eyes.com Cc: Donald Roberts Subject: Window-eyes 9.5.4 and Thunderbird 91.2 I am running a recent version of Windows 10 on my Dell desktop. Try to switch from html view to text view messages in thunderbird it should work better with window eyes obviously you'll loose the hyperlinks capability unless you don't switch to jaws or nvda Have a nice day michael -Original Message- From: Talk On Behalf Of Donald Roberts via Talk Sent: Sunday, 18 July 2021 22:18 To: talk@lists.window-eyes.com Cc: Donald Roberts Subject: W E and Thunderbird CAUTION: This email originated from OUTSIDE the Government Email Infrastructure. DO NOT CLICK LINKS or OPEN attachments unless you recognise the sender and know the content is safe. If no one on this list uses both Window-eyes 9.5.4 as well as Thunderbird 78.1.10, I am probably up the creek without a paddle. I should also mention that I am running probably the latest version of Windows 10 on an HP elite book 840. I have never had the below problem on older versions of Thunderbird, but I just installed the latest version of Thunderbird on this new laptop. It is difficult to describe because I can't find a consistent pattern in addition to which it shows up but far less frequently when using Jaws 2021. At any rate what happens is that the message lists work fine, but when I open an individual message, I see normal headers and all links, absolutely no message body. On one occasion when using W E and attempting to read a TB message, I saw something which said something like "document to saved files" or something similar. The intermittent problems are of course the most difficult to diagnose. When I checked in Thunderbird, Thunderbird.set is loaded, and of course that wave file of the birds loaded as well. Sorry for the seemingly unrelated frragments of info, but as stated previously, I can't find a consistent pattern, and I am tearing out what little hair I have left. A few months ago, Rod Hutton mentioned some problematic files with recent versions of Windows 10 and W E. This seems unlikely in this instance because Jaws also occasionally shows this issue. At this point I feel compelled to ask whether there is any other viable email option. The version of mail which comes with Windows 10 is in my opinion a bad joke. W E can read the message list and the reading pain, but pressing enter accomplishes nothing. If I use Jaws with mail, I can read the entire message, but Jaws won't announce the sender's name unless I have misconfigured it. Ideas please. Thanks. Thanks. Re: Thunderbird
Am aware of the issues when comes to composing emails. Why I - near the end of my initial message stated that it will need some further investigation. Wonder if there might be some kind of an extension, or rather perhaps a Theme, for Thunderbird that will bring us closer to a solution. Themes, control things like color schemes, font sizes and so on. To what extent that is where the bird has its nest, I am not sure, but it might be worth playing a bit around. For those who want a toy store to explore, Thunderbird has their own central for releasing all these kinds of extra gadgets for the software. Something I for one, was not aware of up till very recently. The web address is: .thunderbird.net Here you will find extensions, plug-ins, and themes. You will find different cattegories, depending of what set of main features you are looking for. Unfortunately, it seems to me, not all of he stuff offered up there, is compatible with newer versions of Thunderbird. Meaning that you might end up finding a promising AddOn, download and install it, only to find that it won't start when you fire up Thunderbird. Uninstall, and better luck with your next attempt in searching through the hundreds of alternatives offered to you on their webpage. Again, it might be there would be found some nifty little thing within the settings of Thunderbird. Never really fooled with it, but if Thunderbird is made up on the same basis as its sister program Firefox, you've got a whole story in scrolling throuh, and messing around with, an untold number of settings, which you might not always have a clue what consequences will be. For the sake of ease, I tried doing some searching on the net, hoping that there would be some known tweak to make Thunderbird more accessible for screen readers. Well, your choice of search engine might be more informative than mine. All I found so far, only lists Thunderbird as one of the most accessible Email clients for screen reader users. Amongst the top-ten. Sure, I guess we all knew that much, yet what we here are looking for, would be how to make it really accessible; not just 90 percent, kind of. Try a similar search for Firefox, and see how far you get. Sum it all up, unless someone has stumbled on a solution, I don't know other than we are seeing WinEyes slowly loosing Terrain in the computing landscape of the blind. All knew it would happen, but meanwhile, the best solution for your composing issues that I could come up with, is to write and edit your messages in something like Notepad, and then copy-paste the final result into the composition screen of Thunderbird, before you hit the Send-button. At least, that's what has worked for me, so far. not a real solution, but you get the job done. Re: Thunderbird
I wish your advice could be beneficial to me, but my issue is more basic and probably won't be solved until I finally upgrade to Windows-10. I like Thunderbird a lot. I don't receive a lot of e-mails, so it's easy for me to scroll down and find e-mails without keyboard shortcuts. My only issue is the same one I've had for months - when I'm composing an e-mail, I can only read what I wrote upon pressing the backspace key. Surely you can see how that could be an inconvenience (smile). But maybe I'll try your solution, maybe, somehow, it will solve other problems. Thunderbird
Been playing a bit around, and thought to just share one tiny experience with you all. A good while ago, Thunderbird had an update, which included some Calendar functionality. If you were in the list of mails, and started to tab your way on the screen, you ended up with a load of "empty spots". That is, you press the tab-key, and WinEyes reports silence. Going to the View-menu, by Alt-V, you could see an entry named Calendar, usually reported to be grayed out, so you could not really do much about it. Further, you had an entry named "today", and even when you enter this submenu, and make sure it is turned off, it still seems to be in your way somehow, on the main screen. A day or two ago, I decided to explore the features of plugins and extensions for Thunderbird; which in effect, is much what Apps have been for WinEyes. They can extend, or expand the functionality of the program. Or, they could get very much in our way. Smile. I realized, that Thunderbird - by its own mind - have decided to install such a thing on my computer. Likely, this is something that automatically comes bundled with newer versions of the software, and thereby gets installed without the user's agreeing through the upgrade process. Happily, this kind of extra blah-blah can be removed, and I will in short terms show you how. 1. In the main screen of Thunderbird, hit Alt-T, to get to the Tools menu. 2. Arrow down a couple of times, till you get to the AddOn manager, and hit Enter. 3. You end up in a screen, holding a couple of links. Tab once or twice, to land on one of them. Turn off Browse Mode, with Ctrl-Shift-A. 4. The screen has several tabs. To move around between them, maybe the best way is to tab your way around the screen, til you land on the tab-header line, where you can use your arrows, to choose the desired one. 5. What you are looking for now, is the extension section of the screen. Once you have focused that one, press the tab key till you land on the list of installed extensions. 6. You are specially interested in an extension named "Lightening". Arrow your way down the list, till you have focused that one. 7. You've got two choices here. Either tab till you land on REMOVE, or hit the App-key (Shift-F10), and arrow till you get to REMOVE; then hit Enter. 8. You will hear the screen reader telling you that the AddOn will be removed upon restart. So, Hit Ctrl-F4, to make sure to close the AddOn Manager. 9. Close Thunderbird altogether, by hitting Alt-F4, and then upon waiting for a scond or two, restart your Email program. When restarted, you will find that Thunderbird's main screen, will behave a little more like in the "old days". Going to the View menu, both the "Today" and "Calendar" entries, will have disappeared altogether. And if you use your Tab-key in the main screen, you will no longer meet any silent spots. At least one issue has been removed from your planet. Smile. Now, if we only could have founde a way of setting up Thunderbird in such a way that it will let us edit our outgoing messages, and specially so our replying to a message, we could actually have seen Thunderbird again becoming a fully accessible piece of software; even for WinEyes users. Not sure if such a tweak is possible, but my guess is that a theme, or some adjustment in the very settings of the software will be a couple of places to look. If anyone have ideas, please share. Hope this might help some of you. ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. Re: Thunderbird repeating
Hi, On some occasions I have witnessed TB repeating as I arrowed down the list in the inbox and I have also seen it repeat the subjects. However, at this time as I write, I am experiencing no such behavior even in the subject as you suggested. For what it is worth, I would recommend that when folks experience unusual behavior they should check which setfile is loaded. I have experienced times when I was using TB, the proper setfile was not loaded. If I understand the original thread correctly, Mike and Norene were talking about items repeating when cursoring up and down within a mailbox list. A new issue with Thunderbird
OK guys, this should be pretty easy to solve, but for the life of me I can't figure it out . For some reason, Thunderbird has started showing a message pane every time I move to a message in a mail box. I probably wouldn't have noticed this right off the bat if I didn't get these messages about T-Bird preventing remote content, which comes up far more than I would like. How do you stop this pane from opening up? I'm not sure if I've ever had this issue before. I had an issue a while back where the answer was to press F-11, but that doesn't do it for me this time. Come to think of it, it seems that at that time I was reminded about malware or something, but that was a while ago. Any help with this would really be appreciated. Re: Thunderbird
probably I have lost something here. But please, what is your issue? You have got trouble with newest Thunderbird? OK, but could you tell us what exactly you are experiencing, it might be possible for us to advice where the trouble nests. Currently running Thunderbird here, updated just about a week ago, and have seen no extra issues. So likely something has got messed up in your installation, but without knowing exactly what the issue is, it will be a guesswork to trace the trouble. Re: Thunderbird help
Hi Tom, Thanks for your note. I guess I should have thought to replace the entire TB folder but I didn't. When I reinstalled TB after windows repair, both contact and local folders were missing. I had previously used windows backup to save everything on my system. I noted that after reinstalling TB, the identity had changed and I wasn't sure if there were an association between messages and the former identity. But, using the backup, I restored the local folders and all local folders were in order. For the record, I di find the contacts file, it is history.mab and is in the TB folder. So, again, thanks for your help. Bernie On 10/23/2017 9:33 PM, Tom Kingston via Talk wrote: > Bernie, > I don't know what file or files the contacts are in. Re: Thunderbird
Honestly, it's been a few years since I set up my Thunderbird. So this will be a total guesswork. But for nothing else, make sure the settings in the View menu are correct. Under Toolbars, make sure only the Menu bar, and Status bar are checked. All other features should be unchecked. Under Layout, you might want to go for the Classic view. Under Folders, try set it to Unified. Under Today's Pane, make sure it is set to None. Since you have Thunderbird working on your machine, it might be a workaround for you to make a copy of your Thunderbird folder, under %Appdata% in Windows Explorer. Make sure to delete your mail folders from the copy. Then, let your friend replace her Thunderbird folder, with your copy. This should ensure she will get the same setup as you. She might have to enter her account details anew. Should you need further steps on the folder copying, let me know, and I might be able to pull together some step-by-step instructions on the matter.
