Re: [talk-ph] Fwd: RFC: importing Palawan roads
With more eyeballs all bugs are seen (Linus Torvalds) Doing a quick check on proportions and shapes of different tracks from different portion of the map, I think the data supplied is trash. :-( As per Rally's assessment, I am holding-off to importing this data. Unless, others can make sense of how we can use this for OSM. I can provide a download link to anyone who wants to play around with it. If you think it's useable for OSM, we can discuss this here. Personally, nanghinayang lang ako, if this is good data (or at least useful) a good chunk of roads will be added to OSM. But as Rally said, So, we'll surely get in trouble or lose good reputation for uploading bad data, hehe I'd rather accept someone saying we have wrong data because of an honest newbie experimenting around than importing data we know having big problems. Thanks Rally for doing the assessment. Any other comments? On Sat, Jun 6, 2009 at 11:49 AM, Eugene Alvin Villarsea...@gmail.com wrote: I was about to ask you to ask them how they compiled their data. I've seen them how they draw the lot shapes on paper (during the time nagtatambay ako sa assessor). It's doable if you know where to chop the areas (eg. per subdivision or per purok), then convert it back to raster image, then georectify that image (for every area) which will need actual gps waypoints, then trace your vector lines over the raster layer. But what's the point? we are talking of the whole palawan. The purpose of this data is just for assessment and for assigning PIN codes on the tax declaration, not for navigation nor for making proportionally correct paper map. I highly doubt that the data came from actual field survey. Because I've traced Namria topo maps before (in Luzon datum), and they were proportionally correct when I translated them to WGS84. My old personal garmin maps were made this way with fairly high degree in accuracy. But in this case, the shp file have wrong proportions, different shapes, different angles, a lot of extraneous lines and streets (that doesn't make sense), really bad. I tried Luzon-Mean, Luzon-Philippines, Luzon-Mindanao (all failed), so I tried to cheat by just dragging them over google satellite image, still failed, won't fit. No wonder you can't make it fit using all available datum, hehe. nadaya yata tayo dun. If we are lucky enough to have one subdivision fit the roads of a satellite image (yahoo or google), the adjacent subdivision won't (as i've tried it since this was really easy to do in trackmaker pro). In my experience, even those subdivisions as far as 500meters from your reference tracklog should still fit the satellite image with your extended vector traces; in this case, even the neighboring streets a few blocks away doesn't. So, we'll surely get in trouble or lose good reputation for uploading bad data, hehe. I suggest we just recruit gps-tracker volunteers in any of the streets in palawan (where there are good hi-res satellite images), and lets do it the old fashion way. For who drives to A'dam by car, a good sollution is the Transferium parking in the Ajax stadium. If you arrive from the direction of Utrecht or Rotterdam/schiphol it is indicated on the pannels 'transferium'. Take a parking ticket, and exchange it at the office at ground level. You get 2 free subway tickets to/from center. When they are stamped for the return ride in center zone you only pay something like 7 € for the lot. It's what we do if we drive by car to A'dam. Parking in town center is indeed extremely expensive, if you find a place to park at all. Most parkings often are full. Luc. This I think could also expand to other POI stuff. For example it would only take a short wile to get all the addresses of Burger Kings in the UK. If the BK is already mapped then we could add the address to the POI so giving us another known postcode location. If it is not mapped we could add a link to the town that we need to locate the BK. It does not need to be just BK but it could be National Trust Sites, English Heritage Sites. You shouldn't use living street for some unnamed alleys unless they actually are living streets. Of course if you find an un-named living street you should tag it as such, but living streets are hybrid pedestrian/motorcar streets with specific rules depending on countries. The wiki suggests that this is called Жилая зона (Zhilaya zona) in Russian, you should probably only use living street for things that are classified as such. Re: [OSM-talk] Addresses and POI
OK, so copyright on the electoral roll is an issue. I guess also because of the Data Protection Act I just can't get a list from a business of the addresses (minus names) of their customers. People, companies, organisations can already add anything to the database right now. They could render a map (or pay someone to do it) with their locations on. Without having to sign-up with a OSM account and then workout the various apps that you need to learn to be able to add the info. If so what URL should I be pointing people towards. :-) The reason why I would like to add business locations means we have another way to add postcodes and to give people reference points on a map. If a company is willing to provide the info of where their businesses are then for the moment I am willing to try and add them into the OSM system (for the GB). Some businesses are likely to already be on the system but without all the information we could add e.g. they may have marked a restaurant but they may not of added that it is a McDonalds, and added the full address. I could try and make a list of firms that might be willing to provide location information for their buildings. I could then try contacting them and go from there. Sorry, this was meant into the Czech mailing list. Please ignore this mail. Radek Cernoch Radomir Cernoch píše v So 06. 06. 2009 v 15:53 +0100: Dobrý den, čeká Vás dlouhý mail. Naopak to neplatí. === Současný systém českých adres v OSM === Pokud jste sledovali předchozí diskuzi, rovnou přeskočte do další sekce. Dnes se používá velmi jednoduchý systém: 'addr:housenumber' = [čo] 'addr:alternatenumber' = [čp] 'addr:street' = [ulice] 'addr:city'= [obec] 'addr:postcode'= [PSČ] 'addr:country' = CZ 'is_in'= [část obce], [obec], [kraj], CZ Má však mnohé nevýhody (od nejzávažnějších): * Na mapě se zobrazuje jen číslo orientační, což vyhovuje jen části obyvatel jen některých měst. * Čísla evidenční se zcela ignorují. * Vyhledávače musí vědět, že existuje políčko 'addr:alternatenumber'. * To samé platí pro všechny GPS přístroje. * To samé platí pro renderery map. * Sporná je přílišná obecnost označení „alternatenumber“. Výhodu vidím jedinou: * Mapa je přehledná. === Nový návrh systému českých adres === Nedávno zaslaný návrh se pokouší vyhnout se výše zmíněným nevýhodám a vyhází následujícího principu: Hlavní políčko pro zápis čísla domu 'addr:housenumber' by mělo obsahovat vše potřebné pro jeho jednoznačnou identifikaci a nalezení. [OSM-talk] searching for a lost example of routing
Hi, I'm hoping someone on the list can help me track down an example I saw sometime in the past 5-6 weeks, probably not in a post to this list, but possibly something I found on the web while exploring from someone's post to the list. The example involved a group, probably in central Europe, who had put together a demonstration of inter-railway routing using data from OSM. I think the example was a trip from somewhere on the Baltic to somewhere on the Mediterranean. I thought I had bookmarked the website, but I can't find it. I'd like to refer to it as an example in a briefing I will be participating in this Monday. One of my colleagues and I are proposing a project to look at the feasibility of taking data on public transportation systems in the US, uploading it into OSM from the Google Transit Feed Specification format into which many of them now use, and building true intermodal routing (riding or walking to bus stops, using real sidewalk and bike path data, rather than assuming it exists as Google now does. We plan to include the University of Maryland pedestrian routing application as one example, but if I am recalling the rail interline routing example correctly, that would also be something useful to include. Any other suggestions of working prototypes would also be welcome (I am aware of the OpenStreetRoute application). Many thanks in advance for your assistance. Ed Edward L. In a few weeks, I'll have the chance to present OSM to an audience of youngish (18-30), intelligent, open-minded people, who more than likely haven't yet come across the project. There may well be people who are familiar with free and open source software, but that probably won't be everybody present. Are there wiki pages, slideshows, materials, ideas, etc. that you can show me to help me prepare the presentation? Failing that, how do *you* explain to someone that uses Google Maps every day why you spend your time re-creating the same thing under a different name? (Slightly provocative question, perhaps, but it must be a very common one too -- what's your answer?) Thanks in advance for your help. Tim PS The audience is also very international, if that makes a difference -- mostly European (from all corners of the continent) but also with some Asians, South Americans, and Africans. PPS Sorry if this is a topic that's been covered before, but I've only just joined the list (and the project) and I couldn't immediately find anything relevant in the archives. If I've missed something, please just send me a URL and I'll do the rest. Cheers. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
Re: [OSM-talk] Is 'name' tag mandatory for a 'living_street'?
Hi again and thanks to everyone who responded. Meanwhile I've got a feeling that I was maybe not clear enough in formulating my problem, and Ævar seems to get most close to my idea. Please let me formulate the problem in other words. In Russia traffic regulations make no difference (besides naming terms) betwen named streets marked with Residential Area sign and un-named alleys in residential areas that are not required to be marked with that sign. I guess that at least some of other countries may have similar regulations. With this in mind I would propose to tag as 'living_street any street/alley that allows hybrid (pedestrian/vehicle) traffic with pedestrian priority, and the 'name' tag being optional for these objects. Does this make sense? To Ævar: creation of 'talk-ru' mailing list seems desirable as was already mentioned on the Russian forum as a limitation. BTW, wiki RU namespace is also still pending ( http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Wiki#multilingual_name_spaces ) despite of significant activity. Can you help in getting it created? Regards, Sergey - Original Message - From: Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason ava...@gmail.com To: USHAKOV, Sergey usha...@int.com.ru Cc: talk@openstreetmap.org Sent: Saturday, June 06, 2009 5:02 PM Subject: Re: [OSM-talk] Is 'name' tag mandatory for a 'living_street'? 2009/6/6 USHAKOV, Sergey usha...@int.com.ru: the wiki page http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dliving_street suggests that 'living_street' objects should be attributed with a 'name' tag. Meanwhile it is not uncommon for residential areas to have unnamed alleys inside, and the latter may form a complicated network that deserves being documented and rendered on the map. Is it appropriate/advisable to use 'living_street' objects for these unnamed alleys? Another candidate might be 'service', but to my mind 'service' is not good as does not reflect pedestrians' priority... I also note that there isn't a talk-ru mailing list yet, maybe you (or other russian users) would be interested in having one? ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[Talk-de] FOSSGIS 2010 in Osnabrueck: Die deutsche OSM-Konferenz

Quoto.
