There are now two administrators, myself and Stefan which is much better. I would like to also say how impressed I am with the new public transport schema which is proving to be very useful for modeling the main railway stations in London. I have also been working on the OSM wiki over the past week providing more detail about this schema on more pages. Here are a few pages that I have pretty much finished. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:public_transport%3Dstop_position http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:public_transport%3Dstop_area http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:public_transport%3Dplatform http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:public_transport%3Dstation Thanks for your work on the wiki! No problem. I plan to keep going a while on the above. One question I do have is about how to tag the boundary of a station. For some purposes it seems to be important to have a node representing the station, and a node is also useful because it can be positioned over the main concourse or at any other appropriate location as opposed to being in the centre of the boundary which is often in the tracks/platform area. This begs the question about how to tag the area of the station. On normal maps a stop_area should not be drawn. So there is another possibility to draw the boundary (if alreay supported by renderers): public_transport=station area=yes If you have a building this should be tagged with: public_transport=station building=yes Thanks, but that doesn't answer how one avoids getting two station names rendered, one from the node positioned at exactly where one wants it and which can be used in route relations and another from the centre of the area? Take Paddington Station in London as an example. Here is the overarching stop_area for all the elements of public transport associated in some way with Paddington Station (this including the mainline station, two underground stations and a bunch of bus stops). http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/204439 Here is the stop area for Paddington mainline station itself (note that there is a node with role 'station' and the outline of the station with the role 'building'). Incidentally I am also starting to add footways within the station to the relation with the role 'access'. http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/1562706 Here is the station node. Note the 'note' that reads DO NOT delete as route relations cannot have the building (area) as a 'stop'. http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/558489676 And here is the boundary of the station from which I removed the 'railway=station' tag and added a note that reads please do not add a railway=station tag - there is already a node performing this function. http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/8877521/history I am not 100% comfortable with this approach because without a 'railway=station' tag the area is rendered as any other building rather than as a station. However.. if one adds the 'railway=station' tag to the building outline then one gets another instance of railway station rendered on the map. I know that we shouldn't tag to suit the renderer - this is more a question about how we want to tag things unambiguously and what we want the map to look like and therefore what we want the rendered to do! What I would recommend in your examples: Add type=public_transport public_transport=stop_area to all the relations. I agree with you. Some of those stop areas are older and are not tagged correctly and I missed the type=public_transport off the new ones. In earlier days during the RFC of the proposal there was a public_transport=stop_area_group what exactly fitted your needs for your http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/204439 During the discussion we removed this from the proposal and we saied one should leave away such a relation as a whole. I personally still add such relations and do not remove them. Have a look at the following example: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/1279034 This is the stop_area_group relation containing ONLY other stop_areas. One for railway and the other for the bus. The relations for the railway also includes parkride and the stations building (http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/82160292) The other realation for the bus stations contains a station tagged with area=yes to show the outline of the bus station ( http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/83334745). A railway=station is not used anymore and has been replaced by public_transport=station. Actually it does not get rendered completely, but I think this is only a question of time until the renderers are updated. Thanks for the above. The professional European transport model (transmodel) allows nested stop areas and these are used extensively in the UK bus model much of which is already loaded into OSM. I will continue to use hierarchical stop area (as you are doing). One can propose this feature with public_transport=stop_area_group seperately (as it was in Oxomoa). But causes discussions that could be had in 10 minutes to get spread out over 10 weeks ;) Dave is right about the advantages of asynchronous discussion; I usually prefer that as well. But things being dragged out endlessly really is a serious disadvantage, and not acceptable in many cases. In an IRC meeting you will usually have a small number of people and all of them are (or are at least expected to be) there, i.e. they will read and participate, and you can get a quick idea of what the majority thinks. On IRC if someone comes up with a stupid idea, someone can say soemthing like motion to ignore Fred's stupid idea and get on with our agenda, and then everyone will say aye and Fred is expected to accept that. That kind of discipline is necessary if you want to make decisions efficiently and not waste everyone's time - precious time, I might add, since for many the weekly hour on SWG IRC is not the only recurring meeting they attend. On a mailing list, and certainly not on this mailing list, you do not have that discipline. Someone comes up with a stupid idea, is told by a bunch of others that his idea is stupid, but nonetheless continues with posting after posting. It's ok to have a forum where people can air their views ad infinitum, but it is not suitable for making decisions. Maybe it is possible to find a combination. SWG usually announce their agenda well ahead so community is free to discuss that on the list beforehand (at the SWG meeting someone could then say mood on list seems to favour this/that, of course SWG could still decide otherwise). Problem is that, being conducted by humans like us, SWG meetings do not always follow the agenda strictly. Might be necessary to add discipline to SWG meetings in form of don't discuss stuff that wasn't on the agenda - put them on agenda for next week, then again that would cause more bueraucracy overhead and reduce usefulness... Aldo, The sys-admin team is likely asleep right now (it's pretty late in London) but the basic thing they'd be likely to say to you is that the OSM official tile servers are not a good choice for commercial applications. There are heavy usage restrictions on them because of limited resources. A better choice for commercial users is to use a commercial tile provider, such as Mapquest or Cloudmade. Those are only two examples. I know other tile providers exist, but they're not coming to me at the moment. Or, if you want to have complete control over your application, you can run your own tile service, and there is documentation on how to do that, and there are commercial entities which provide OSM consulting. - Serge ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [talk-au] How many NearMap users do you think have accepted the new CTs and ODbL?
I'm curious about the legal position on tracing as a derived work (probably different in different countries). Perhaps Microsoft saying it does not consider tracing to be a derived work does not stem from their largess but their reading of the legal position. Amongst artist friends I've heard discussions about copies being considered autonomous artworks as long as they are not exact duplicates. I believe it stems from the legal protection offered to art works which parody or comment on other art works, collages, as well as art students creating their own copies of art works in the process of studying. Some artists have even created meticulous copies of famous paintings but at different scales and in different contexts as a way of comment. Did Andy Warhol breach copyright when he turned photos into screen print images? A hand traced copy of a feature produced from a photograph may well be sufficiently distinct to not be considered a derived work. Any copyright lawyers in the house? [talk-au] OSM CTs
It seems to me that there is a common sense solution to all the angst about changing CTs, licencing etc. Those who believe that OSM should transmogrify into something different should fork a new project, leaving those who desire the status quo with (obviously) the staus quo. To expect those who want what they already have to create something new so they can go on having what they have now (does that make sense?) is bizarre. Personally, I have retired from any mapping until this situation resolves itself. I side with those who regard the new CTs as unacceptable, and the process by which they are being imposed as maybe worse than unacceptable. OSM is tearing itself apart from within. When there is a clear way for me to support a universal free map I will probably do so again. In the meantime, I am just accumulating GPS tracks, with no incentive to do anything more with them. But I won't hold my breath. I realise that if OSM is to continue in its previous guise, then the time and effort expended on projects like FreeOSM will be wasted. But isn't that the best outcome?

(Alles selbstgetrackt, hab schon nachgefragt).

Servus! Gestern (So, 1. And when you do fix a newbie You've not only fixed their mapping to date, but also their mapping in the future, and even the future mapping of the mappers they meet. Yes, this message has nothing to do with newbies. If newbies are doing large scale imports then that is just another layer of DONOTWANT on top of existing problems with imports. Imports are *HARD* do to right. Any import needs to be done by experienced mappers who have *significant* experience in manual mapping. In my very strongly held opinion. and as i've said before, no import should be done without a plan, and the plan _must_ include QC procedures and provision for a rollback if the QC fails. a newbie shouldn't be doing imports. an experienced mapper who fails to do necessary QC should be taken out back and shot. richard I've been thinking about this from a perspective that is probably not very OSM-like: what if we had a system like StackOverflow, where you need to earn yourself some reputation by doing Good Things before you can do just anything to the data? This relates to the idea of having a badge system [1], where badges would be auto-awarded (as opposed to the lolcats of awesomeness we have currently). More badges - higher rep - more rights in the system. On SO, this is combined with the concept of upvoting / downvoting contributions, which could be translated to changesets, although I'm not so sure if that would work well. If at all feasible I'd say you would only be able to up/downvote changesets covering areas where you made 'significant' contributions yourself. This has some challenges (like the case of editing huge relations) but those could feasibly be met. How would such a system affect the mappers community? I'd say we lose some proponents of egalitarianism-above-everything, but it could work in our favor in cases like this one. As an important side effect, it could also serve to combat the huge churn rate we currently see with new contributors - 70% of OSM accounts never made one single edit, and of those who do, around 65% never edit anything after their first month. I believe giving new mappers concrete, attainable goals and a sense of accomplishment - badges - could really help to retain motivation. How is that? West Harrisburg was created using ordinary editing tools over a matter of months. Certainly you're not proposing that new editors can't draw roads? That could be an option, although you'd need to be able to move on pretty quickly from there. Reputation systems are about trust: you gain trust by delivering quality contributions, you lose it by delivering crap. On eBay it involves peer-rating of contributions, on StackOverflow it's a combination of peer-reviewing and badges, and on OSM I think it could look something like that. You would get badges for doing good things, and changesets could be peer-reviewed (though probably only by fellow users who have done any significant amount of editing in the same area - or at least their ratings would weigh in more). On StackOverflow you can do useful things right from the start: ask and answer questions. Once you gain rep, you can start doing even more useful things quite soon: vote contributions up or down, edit questions, create new tags. I think the benefits of higher quality data and less churn outweigh the imposed limitations associated with the learning curve. What is the story behind this West Harrisburg vandalism situation by the way? Didn't realize this map was supposed to be a real map. Just through[sic] some stuff in there. Probably one of the main challenges for a rep system is getting the balance just right: you want to stimulate doing good things but reduce collateral damage (badge hunting) as much as possible. You wouldn't want to reward pure quantity - anyone can add 1000 nodes in one day. Does that mean it can't work at all? I don't think so. In this particular case the threshold could be a little more complicated with a temporal dimension - the Node Regular badge for 1000 nodes in a month, with no more than 100 on any given day. I mean, there's ways to tackle these problems - as there will always be ways to beat the system. You're not going to eliminate evil. As for your specific case of importing the NYC subway - that's great work, and you apparently knew what you were doing. A lot of people don't, and we see the negative effects of that more and more often, pissing off (and even scaring away) experienced mappers. Who would you rather lose: committed and experienced mappers frustrated with yet another ill-advised import, or those not willing to take the time to address the learning curve that is inherently there in an open, do-ocracy-based community? -- Martijn van Exel http://about.me/mvexel ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

Hi James, I did some more corrections on the rules files and I think that it covers all the left over points I saw (including adding waterway:stream to one of FCODE for Connectors that wasn't working). Just to confirm, these changes are the ones I see on the wiki, right? Yes In terms of untagged ways, if we don't import ComID's and the rest of the additional NHD tags. But ComIDs are still on the wiki. I can add -t in case there are untagged nodes/ways, but I don't have a strong opinion re: keeping or nuking back-references like ComIDs. My opinion is not strong, which is why I didn't nuke them there. I had stopped using them, as the prospect of ever referencing back to the NHD seemed nearly infinitessimal. Also, it would make conversion much easier ;). cheers ben James ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] Another day, another bad import
I see 4 related but different issues here. - New users (or un-noticed users that make poor edits) that cause problems for several reasons. - bots having unintended consequences - new to import users (like the first one but at a new level) - poor tools or instructions on making use of those tools Possible ideas for dealing with these. For new users, Simple and specific type instructions. My understanding is most users start with wanting to add/fix things they are familiar with. So specific instructions for those things, with links to videos if possible, and possibly for each of the major editors (potlatch, JOSM, merkator...) Make and intro video (1-3 min.) almost mandatory for new users when they sign up. A quick welcome, overview of the project, and point out where to find the instructions above to help them with what they want to do. Limit new users to some max number of changes per change set. If they go over, they have a warning about it but can proceed after clicking thru it. That change set could be flagged for review by some volunteers for that task. If they go thru training (instruction material mentioned above) the limit is removed. For bots and imports, try something similar. Limit what they can do until reviewing some good instructions. This relies on *up to date, and quality instructions* being read and followed. Some sort of tracking for training a user has gone thru as well as an honor system for that training. Determining what a user is doing but number of changes per set and/or what tools they are using. The instructions and getting people to use them are probably the best place to put effort. -- Dale Puch ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
