Re[2]: Model/view design for text editor

2002-12-29 Thread Douglas Hinds
Hello Thomas,

Sunday, December 29, 2002 you asked:

I'm no expert on text editors, so I'd best ask. Can other editors:

Change text from All Caps to All Lower Case or First Letter Caps
with a 2 key keystroke combo?

TF How do you do that? (Another feature I never knew of... ;-))

On my Latin American Spanish Keyboard, All Caps = crtl+? (second
last key on right, top row), All Lower Case = ctrl+¿ (last key on
right, top row) First Letter Caps = ctrl+] (last key on right,
second row from bottom).

See Marck's silverstone website for the equivalent English keyboard
commands.

You've hit on one of TB!'s main shortcomings, i.e., there's no easy
way to make changes globally, across accounts. You have to configure
each account separately.

Currently filters cannot be created that will work for multiple
accounts.

The only way to make the accounts be checked sequentially is to
adjust the automatic check interval for each account in a way that
will prevent checks occurring at the same time.

I agree. Except for Trojans of course.

How can you ben infected through TB with a trojan?

And as long as you keep all your mail incoming to text only.

No, TB's HTML rendering engine does not allow code to run.

And as long as you don't click on something sent to you by a friend.
And as long as you don't click on something by accident.

In both these cases, you have to either actually switch off the
Warning feature in TB, or ignore the warning. so, accidents are not
really possible, and TB will allow you to open the file sent to you by
a friend, because TB assumes you know what you are doing when you
click the warning away. I would not like TB to nanny me that far.

And as long as you have AV software to make sure none of the above
happens if you don't take the necessary precautions for one reason
 or another.

There are enough people who don't run AV software for email, as long
as they run TB. It is pretty difficult to start a received malware by
accident from within TB.

Are you using dial-up or LAN routing? You don't say.

The only work-around is for dial-up usage and involves setting the
Options | Network administration options to do No automatic
dial for periodical checking... and Use existing dial-up
connection That will stop it checking while you're off-line.

As for LAN connection, that's a bit tougher. You can't stop it
checking because you're supposed to be always on-line in that
environment. What I have done is to reprogramme the Windows Sound
for Exclamation to (none). That cures the beep but not the event
:-).

Before:
TheBat - ISP SMTP

After:
TheBat - Norton - ISP SMTP

So even if a virus such as klez was caught, Norton would probably

I've tried to uninstall The Bat! v1.62 but I get an error when I try to

Most likely, the uninstaller doesn't remove any files that it did not
originally istall - this means your email, i.e. files that were
created in the course of using the program. This is normal and correct
behavior; uninstallers shouldn't delete files created by the user.

(Also, the uninstaller will not be able to remove the program's
directory if a file in that directory is kept open by any
application.)

If that is the case and if you do want to delete all those files, you
should be able to remove TheBat's directory using Windows Explorer.

I had the exact same problem yesterday when I was uninstalling and
reinstalling. It seems to be a glitch. The program didn't even attempt
an uninstall due to some error, as you mentioned.

What I did was go in and manually deleted the Bat folder, with
everything in it. Then I used RegCleaner (or manually editing the
registry will also do) to uninstall any remaining Bat registries, and of
course deleted all shortcuts on the menu and desktop. It was an
unorthodox method for deleting a program but it seemed to do the trick.
The Bat uninstall feature does seem to be a problem though

I.e. in Windows, for instance, unless you install things like Chinese,

Questins related to the log

I can invoke the log with CTRL-SHIFT-A and see the activity, but if I want
to do a search to find out which filter processed a particular message
(which I need to do when I can't figure out why something was moved
to, say, my Spam mailbox), there's no way I can search for that
particular message. I'd at least like to be able to search for the
words processed by so I can find those messages which were processed
by filters. If I try to use CTRL-F, nothing happens.

I guess I can copy the whole log into my word processing program and
then search, but I don't understand why I can't search within the
log.

2. Also, I can't go back and forth between the log and TB. When the log
is open, I can't do anything else in TB until I close it. Why?

3. One other log-related question. What do the green and blue arrows

The icons show what filter set was used, so that might help you with a

like any other and anything that would target the underlying mail

TF How can you ben infected through TB with a trojan?

Through an attachment for example. Even from a trusted source.

And as long as you keep all your mail incoming to text only.

TF No, TB's HTML rendering engine does not allow code to run.

Code doesn't have to run in TB. You can download mail from a trusted
source, save it to disk and run it from there. And you may never know
you have the trojan as a good trojan will not affect your machine
until, for example, the time comes for your machine to be used in a
DDOS attack.

And as long as you don't click on something sent to you by a friend.
And as long as you don't click on something by accident.

TF In both these cases, you have to either actually switch off the
TF Warning feature in TB, or ignore the warning. so, accidents are not
TF really possible, and TB will allow you to open the file sent to you by
TF a friend, because TB assumes you know what you are doing when you
TF click the warning away. I would not like TB to nanny me that far.

And there is a good example of a security hole. How do you know your
friend isn't passing on an infection, whether it be worm/virus or
trojan?

And as long as you have AV software to make sure none of the above
happens if you don't take the necessary precautions for one reason
 or another.

TF There are enough people who don't run AV software for email, as long
TF as they run TB. It is pretty difficult to start a received malware by
TF accident from within TB.

If you're not convinced by my trusted source argument:

It wasn't that long ago that Microsoft distributed a CD to 2000
developers at a Developers Conference which contained a virus/worm.
And it was only a couple of years before that that Novell sent out 50k
copies of it's what was then it's current networking product also
containing a worm. ;-)

No offense taken what so ever :) A good debate is the father
of a good report.

I was though for the record not mentioning writing a report
about AVs but a report on good system maintenance.

The future report is mainly aimed at protecting yourself
and not others; but what is safety with a disregard of it
towards others?

You're right and I am not upset. I can only thank you for
your point of view on the subject.

I do still prefer a plug-in VS. full system watch AVs. Which
is the best freeware version out? I don't really like the
idea of paying for another anti-virus scanner :(

MA You'd be much better off with the excellent Norton engine that you
MA already have, running all the time.

NAV is a part of my NSW2002 Pro package and I don't have it
installed. Does it have plug-in support because then maybe
I'll pull it out of the box?

I do have MicroTrend PC-cillin 2000 installed and it is
actively updated but it fails to catch incoming outgoing
virus attachments :(

Blah, some of the most recently ones are easily coded in delphi, and

were viruses that specifically targetted TB!... but now you're
saying all programs in general? A rather obvious statement, and

Not really... I've not seen one that specifically uses TB!'s mail

So, a generic which distributed itself by attaching to any sent

Er, only if you were foolish enough to execute the attachment from a

Re: Compose Editor Produces Jumbled Letters

2002-12-29 Thread Sue
Okay, so here's the scoop about the jumbled letters:

I searched the Internet for newer video card drivers and the only one
I found was one that was slightly newer than the one I already had
installed. Since I had tried all other options, I decided that
downloading and installing the drivers was my last and only hope.
After installing, I opened The Bat and (surprise, surprise!) my
compose screen finally works! It looks and acts exactly the way it is
supposed to. I am writing this message and actually seeing what I'm
typing! So I guess the drivers *were* the culprit after all. Okay...
I'm keeping TB for sure now. ;-)

Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions!

Sue
