How to get MicroEd to use us-ascii?

2008-05-08 Thread ztrader
A couple of Outlook users have reported that my emails to them look
'messed up'. This seems to happen when TB uses the windows-1252 font
and 8-bit coding - the result of having Plain Text (MicroEd) selected.
If I select Plain Text (Windows) instead, I get 7-bit us-ascii and all
seems to be OK. If I set Plain Text (Windows), though, I seem to lose
some editing/formatting features.

How can I set an option to have MicroEd use us-ascii [or some font
that Outlook can handle absolutely reliably] for a particular folder
and still keep the editing features? I don't seem to see that as a
choice, and windows-1252 does not seem to be there either.

I am interested in plain text only - no HTML.

I get 500-600 emails a day, and it typically misplaces only one email

The score for your message was only 0.7, with 5.0 as the trigger -

negative, and subtract from an otherwise high score from routing.

There was a rather big discussion about including Osiris, etc in the
scoring. Many seemed to be innocent users who had an ISP that was not
good about curtailing spam. Most people thought it would, overall, be
a good idea to keep it, and so I left the usual BL suspects in. This

email on CD ROM - how?

So do I. I appreciate the warnings TB gives now, and would like to

give a stronger or more persistent warning if an attachment has a
double extension (.gif.exe, for example)? This would give an extra

Some people want only raw speed. If it is an option, those who wish to

STRONG security and privacy are the most important features of TB, in

Very good idea! TB really NEEDS better documentation, especially for
newbies. Would it make sense to post the FAQ sections, as they are
completed, to a special list - BatFaqs, for example?

In emails, the idea would be to build a FAQ section instead of simply
answering a question. The form of emails would be different, with
answers placed within or at the end of an already-existing answer,
without quotes, instead of the usual separate add-on to the previous
email. When all the answers have been combined into a single Q and A
form,it would be forwarded to the special list.

Granted, this might mush together answers from several people, and
make it a bit harder to see who said what, but the final result would
be a question and answer pair that could become part of a FAQ
directly. What do you think?

I'll second that! I really LIKE these fonts, too, for the reasons you
mentioned, and others. TB makes it easy to use them also. If anything,
I'd like to see any possible improvements in
handling/editing/filtering text much before adding fancy fonts or
HTML.

But, I'm mostly interested in the information content of messages, not
how pretty they look. :-)

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually, the reason for the regex is that
I want to filter ONLY if Startword is the FIRST word and Endword is
the LAST word. If they are in any other positions, or if one is
missing, the message is not filtered. The positions are important.

It is actually a bit more complex - Startword and Endword can be one
of about 3 words each. I first wanted to see if the pre part could be
eliminated, and Startword recognized as the "start".

I'd like to filter on a subject line. The structure is:

Startword stuff in the middle Endword

This structure is sometimes prefixed with another word or two as:

[pre1.. pren] Startword stuff in the middle Endword

The 1-3 words in the beginning are always surrounded by square
brackets [ ].

What I'd like to do is ignore the brackets, and any words in the
brackets, and still be able to filter on Startword and Endword. How
can I do that?

How to NOT get messages for an account?

2001-03-13 Thread ztrader

I have a number of accounts that I get with alt-f2, but some are
'fake' accounts that can send mail OK but are unable to get mail.
Older versions of TBat ignored the 'get', and timed out, and alt-f2
got all the mail without intervention.

The new version presumably wants to update the fake accounts with a
password, since it can't connect. Trouble is, a message box requiring
a response comes up and needs a response to go away.

I was NOT suggesting replacing the current rules with scripting. The

But, consider another possibility - suppose scripts were available.
This list would be a perfect place to cooperatively develop some VERY
effective spam filtering scripts - people could do parts and add them,

Your thoughts? A good idea?

KE complex non-standard windows, controls etc, but i'd hate to se it
KE in a good mailer like this, if the scripting language weren't
KE made in a simple yet powerful way.

What I'm referring to is ONLY a filtering script, which would be
completely OPTIONAL. This would not affect anything about the screen
or anything else in the program, and could be ignored if you desire.

In Spam Bouncer, I just copy the file and use it - I don't have to do
ANYTHING to it, although there is a very small additional file that
has one's account information in it. I was thinking of something
similar for TB.

I'm not sure I understand why you are objecting to having an option
that would not affect you in any way, unless you choose to use it.

Regarding power and simplicity, to get a lot of power often requires a
bit of complexity. This complexity can be 'transparent', as it tends
to be with Visual Basic, or relatively 'opaque' as it is with many
Unix-style tools, such as RegExp's. The 'transparency' is more often a
larger problem for beginner/occasional users than the complexity.

Is it possible to sort files in a window so that all the emails with

Also, is there a way to filter emails with attachments so that they

It sounds easy, and humans do it with little apparent effort, but it
is actually a complex problem. You want to do what I, and many others,
want to do. I played with this for a while and the best solution I
could find was a free program (Spam Bouncer) that runs under Unix (I'm
not recommending this to you, just illustrating what it seems to
take).

Anyway, if you look at this code it is MANY pages of rather complex
stuff (hint re complexity - almost every line is filled with regular
expressions :-). And this code is updated every few weeks to keep up
with the latest spammer techniques.

The good news is that it works quite well - I get a very high rate of
correct filtering for this - but to do that well takes quite a lot of
code. I don't believe it is reasonable to expect this level of
performance with the simple filtering in TB.

But, when TB allows external filter scripts... can't wait :-).

I thought you were advocating sending a 'hollow' message with only a

with no operator intervention. This would make it look to the operator
as though the link were the message. Convenient and transparent, but a
hazard.

As long as the viewer knows that it is a download and can intervene,
it is essentially the same as what TB does now. Not a problem.

TF Only, with the FTP, I have to download (duplicate) it onto my

Best for checking the file.

TF No, the link idea is good. I have never seen it work, but I like it

SMTP - what is sent?

2000-09-18 Thread ztrader

I have a mail account that I can no longer send mail to. There is
supposedly an issue which now requires all lower case characters in
the user name. When I set up the account in TB, it was set up as
U, with the first char in upper case, the rest lower case. I went
to properties and changed everything (I think :-) to lower case.

However, when I try to send mail, I still get an error that says:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] no such user. The error message still has the name
with a leading Ucase letter. I can receive mail, so there is such an
account.

Question: How can I be sure TB is not sending out an SMTP request with
U? Did I not find all the places where it needs to be changed? Is
it stored in the registry, perhaps? Any ideas to check this out to see
if the problem is at my end or theirs?

Thanks,

Filtering - a big wish

2000-09-14 Thread ztrader

For the wish list:

A way to be able to run a script file on a message to do sorting,
instead of having built-in functions that get more and more complex.
Procmail, for example, can be made to do fantastic things with mail -
even if all the functionality of procmail can't be done, a subset
would be a major improvement.

Or perhaps perl or VB might be used. The idea is to run a
script/program instead of placing information in boxes.

This would not necessarily replace the boxes, as RE's have not
replaced the boxes, but would give a very powerful capability to TB.

Just a thought...

Saving old mail?

2000-09-13 Thread ztrader

I'd like to save old mail messages in TB format.

(1) If I do that, is it possible to save only the message file and not
the index file? If I then try to read the message file by itself, will
it work without the index?

(2) The files would be renamed (date, etc added to name). If I do
this, can this file be read back easily, or does one have to set up
another folder for it? (I DON'T want to mix old and new messages at a
later time - just look at old ones only).

(3) Is it easier to save as a Unix file instead? I'd prefer this as I
then could strip off extra headers and save a bit of space.

(4) In a Unix file format, what are the MINIMUM required headers so TB
can read it OK?

(5) If I strip out the base64 coded part of attachments in the Unix
file, but leave the 'boundary' lines to show that there was an
attachment, will TB get confused by the 'boundary' lines still being
in there, without the base64 part?

Last, but not least, is there a better way to manage old Bat mail :-)?

Thanks,

ztrader

Security first, please

2000-09-10 Thread ztrader

I like the Bat because it does NOT tie everything together as does M$.
This adds a degree of security that is important to me. I am less
vulnerable to the hoards of hackers who want to make yet another virus
so they can boast to their friends how good they are.

I don't really need to see my email in 16,000 ever-changing colors -
plain ASCII text is just fine for delivering the message. In many
years of reading email, I can't think of ONE instance where the fancy
formatting has added to the 'information content'. People who want to
have all this should use M$, not the Bat. Easy choice for me.

Security first...

Re[2]: External filter kludge?

2000-09-03 Thread ztrader

On Saturday, September 02, 2000, 6:27:26 PM, you wrote:

JA You want TB to fetch your mail from the server, export it, have an
JA external program process it and then import it back into TB?

Yes. The sticking point is to get TB to process the import as though
it were coming from my ISP via POP3.

JA If that's the case, do you already have the external program, or are
JA you planning on writing one for this task?

I was going to write one. I'm using Spam Bouncer now and it is VERY
good at classifying spam. If any of you run with a shell account or on
*nix, you might check this out.

It does so by using a numeric weighting of many different rules and
detection techniques. Unfortunately, this is a procmail script, and I
have not been able to find a way to run it under Windoze. I was
considering using the same techniques in a pgm I could run in Win.

JA Either way, there may be
JA a less complicated solution for what you want.

I'm all ears :-)...

JA My suggestion would be, get a program that will act like a local mail
JA server (Hamster springs to mind, but I'm sure there are lots of other
JA ones). Hopefully you can find one that will store the messages in a
JA plain text file format.

This is a bit of a problem. I have not seen one in my search that
looks like it produces text files. M$ seems pervasive :-((.

JA Once you do that, have your filtering program
JA run on this server file. When that's complete, TB could just
JA download the mail like normal, except it would get it from your local
JA server instead of your ISP.

Would I have a conflict with other proxies? I now run Proxomitron (and
like it a lot) on localhost. How would I run both?

JA If this is not acceptable, then how about creating a second account
JA (account B)in TB. SNIP Also, under
JA Networking and Administration, select "Allow Local Delivery." This
JA just bypasses your ISP's mail server.

I was thinking of using the 2-account technique in my original post;
one to download and send to the external pgm, and the second to be my
'real' account that would get the processed mail as an *input*.

From Help:
When "Allow Local Delivery" is on, the outgoing messages addressed to
local users, are dispatched directly and put into appropriate message
bases instead of sending them to SMTP server.

Is a "message base" another account folder? If so, could I make a rule
that just 'puts' it in the other account folder, or do I actually have
to 'forward' the message to the other account?

JA In fact, you can make it so
JA Account B can not access your ISP's mail server, and this should
JA work.

This would be a good idea.

JA Run a manual filter on this subfolder. This
JA manual folder should redirect your messages to the address specified
JA in account A (eg [EMAIL PROTECTED]), and delete them from the
JA subfolder.

I'm a bit confused - why do I have to run the filter manually?

JA Now your messages will be processed as though you were
JA downloading them off of your mail server.

This is what I was looking for! If so, all the many rules will still
work.

JA Hope this helped.

This helped a LOT

Thanks VERY much!!!

Ever closer to the spam filter...

Nope - I have mine set to not bounce anything. But, you can set it up
to bounce, to bounce with a nasty message, to report spam to
abuse-whatever, and a whole host of other options if you want to get
really detailed about what to do. (You could even have it send an
email to your local congressman, with the offending post attached :-).
It's quite flexible...

Vanishing email?

2000-09-03 Thread ztrader

I have noticed several times that the number of emails being recovered
does not seem to match the number of new emails shown. For example, TB
just got '1 of 1' emails, but no new email shows up! I do not have any
filtered to 'mark as read' in this account. Any idea what is
happening?

External filter kludge?

2000-09-02 Thread ztrader

I was trying to find a way to get TB to work with an external
mail filtering pgm. What I was considering was:

1. External pgm writes a batch file for TB.

2. TB sees this file and executes:
/check dummy (this gets the POP3 mail)
'dummy' filter puts all mail in a Unix file
/export flag file (this tells the external pgm it is done)

3. External pgm process the Unix email file, then
writes another batch file for TB

4. TB sees this file and executes:
/import processed file to 'real' mail account inbox

But - at this point, I can't think of a way to get TB to run the new
mail through the 'real' account filters, and thus sort everything into
the right folders. I'm trying to do this as automatically as possible.

I realize I could repeat the kludge for each folder, but this gets
eaaallly kludgy :-).

Any way to get TB to run this folder through the filters?
OR - is there a better way to do this? As a beginner, I'm still
learning about TB :-).

Any ideas/solutions much appreciated.

OZ /IMPORT command allows batch importing of e-mail messages into a specified folder

Thanks for the tip!

Again, from help:

Note that you can run only one copy of The Bat! at your PC at a time,
but if you try to start another copy of The Bat!, all Command Line
parameters will be seamlessly passed to the running copy of the
program and executed.

I assume this means one could do the import without having to
  start up TB each time?

For those who are familiar with programming we give a hint: The Bat!
checks the file called TheBat.IPC which is located in the same
directory where The Bat! executable (TheBat.exe) file is located.

When does TB do this check? Only at startup :-((?

To ensure that a copy of The Bat! is running on a computer, a program
which wants to interact with The Bat! must check whether the mutex
called “The Bat!” is owned by a process and if it is not, The Bat!
must be started.

How does one do this from a batch file?

Ever closer to a good filtering solution :-)...

Aha. The actions are kill or ignore - does kill remove the message

Given a (hopefully) small fraction of spam, why is this preferred over
simply sending the msg to a spam folder, and catching those false

MDP It's not up to me. I don't work for RIT (although I have helped Maxim

I realize that - it was a semi-joke :-). I was suggesting that there
have been a number of good explanations on the list, even in the short
time I've been here. If these were collected and organized, it would
be a most helpful document, IMHO. Could actually be outside the help

External processing of TB files?

2000-08-31 Thread ztrader

Is it possible to modify, perhaps extensively, the mail files produced
by TB without 'damaging' them in a way that would cause problems in
TB?

For example, if I run a pgm to remove ads, some headers, etc from
TB email files, would TB still be able to use them as if nothing had
happened?

These would be for the .tbb files only, not the .tbi's (index files?).
The binary top header and message headers would not be changed by the
processing.

If the processing gets more extensive and entire messages are removed,
including the binary header, would this still be OK?

Thanks,

Perhaps Delete should remove the condition from the screen, and then

It has a nice summary of RE's, I agree. The confusion, for me, comes

What do you do to use BOTH "special syntax", as seems to be required,

A reworded version of the above would be a nice addition to the help

behind TB is becoming clear to me.

I assume that the and/or relationship between 'rules' and
'alternatives' also holds when using RE's - true?

An interface thought... If the RE box is checked, the 'rules' and
'alternatives' tabs are replaced by a single RE tab. This might be
more clear and avoid confusion between the two. Also would give a
larger area for complex RE's to be seen and edited.

Thought 2... Would it be possible to use an add-on to do part of
the filtering? I now have a procmail script (not mine) that does a
great job of 'scoring' spam by numeric techniques. It will spot spam,
even when addressed directly to me, perhaps 80-90% of the time. If
this could be included in TB it would be a killer add-on, IMHO. Would
it possible to run perl, or VB, or ??, for example, "inside" TB?
