This solution works for you, because you encode your mails to your
Russian friends in a Cyrillic charset which includes the Latin letters
as well. But Rich most probably encodes Western or even not at all
(=US-ASCII). And a Cyrillic letter which might look like a Latin
letter (if correctly encoded) turns out nonsense (if not correctly
encoded).
Ed will look like this with a Cyrillic E encoded US-ASCII: Åd

And if you use it as a handle in the AB, this letter might even get in
you headers, and normally you should not have 8-bit characters there.

If TB could encode UTF-8 all this would become (a little) easier!

In account properties you have to uncheck 'Periodical checking'
Go to TB's scheduler
  (Tools - Scheduler)
Create a new task in 'repeating tasks'
(In the field with tasks: right mouse button - new)
Set as action 'send check mail'
Recurrence: 1 day
Advanced: Set the time scheme you'd like to use

Note: In the past the scheduler was a tad buggy and as I've never used
it for real tasks, I don't know how it functions now. If somehow TB's
scheduler fails to produce, you could use Windows's Scheduler to
achieve the same.
Set the command to execute as path\thebat.exe /check*
In the advanced properties of the task go to 'scheme' go to the next
level of advanced and you can insert a scheme as you discribed.

For myself I'd try TB's scheduler first, but YMMV

Is there an easy solution so the subfolders use the same templates

I am asking this because I use a lot of filters for my ebaystuff which
filter specific messages to specific folders:

ebay

I want each subfolder to use the properties of /ebay.

TB And Loss Of Internet Connection

2004-06-09 Thread Steve Mulhall
Hey guys,

Here's a poser for you all.

Every so often (in fact probably 2 or 3 times a day) my machine loses
it's network connections, both internal (LAN) and external (Internet)
and I cannot even send an e-mail from TB to my local mailserver (on my
PC) - get the message cannot connect to the server. I am on an ADSL
connection.

None of the usual diagnostic routines throw up any clues and none of
the usual things I try in this situation seem to work. But what fixes
it every time is shutting down TB, at which point the network is
restored and I can open up TB again and continue on my merry way.

I haven't yet had time to delve more closely into this and presume no
one else is having the same problem as I've seen no posts about it,
but if anyone has any clues as to what's going on here...

Here is another solution.

I have started to use the memo field for indicating lots of things about
particular individuals. I use it to indicate particular signatures that
I need to use for particular individuals (for work purposes). I use it to
automatically set read and/or delivery receipts for particular
individuals, and I have been helping Cyrille to use it to identify the
language template that should be used for a particular individual.

You can use the same memo field to carry out one or more of these
functions. The convention I use it to have a separate line in the memo
field for each of these. The line takes the form (without the quotes):
attribute: value

For instance as I use it, an individuals memo field may look like this:

receipts: read delivery
sig: consultant
aka: Jules

which would tell my templates to set both delivery and read receipts, use
the signature defined in my sig_consultant QT and use Jules as the
person's nickname.

In particular, you can address the person correctly using the following
QT

 [ To_Name QT ]
%_To_NN=%SetPattRegexp='(?im)^aka:\s*(.*?)$'%RegExpMatch='%ABToMemo'%-
%If:'%_To_NN'''%-
:'%_To_Name=%_To_NN'%-
:'%_To_Name=%Capital(%ABToFirstName=^%ToFName^)'%-
 [ End To_Name QT ]

Then start your message template with
%QInclude(To_Name)

This will use the nickname defined a the line of the form (without quotes)
aka: nickname
anywhere in the person's memo field. If there is no such line, it will
use the person's first name from their address book entry, and if that
doesn't exist, it will use the first name from their email address.

 :'%_To_Name=%Capital(%ABToFirstName=^%ToFName^)'%-
  [ End To_Name QT ]

And I forgot to add the last line to the QT, which is
%_To_Name

So it should read
 [ To_Name QT ]
%_To_NN=%SetPattRegexp='(?im)^aka:\s*(.*?)$'%RegExpMatch='%ABToMemo'%-
%If:'%_To_NN'''%-
:'%_To_Name=%_To_NN'%-
:'%_To_Name=%Capital(%ABToFirstName=^%ToFName^)'%-
%_To_Name
 [ End To_Name QT ]

Apologies if I confused anyone. I cut it out of a much larger QT that I
use that puts multiple names on the greeting line. The older version of
that QT, which used the nickname field as Terry wanted to do, is in the
The Bat! QT library as Greet_All_Recipients. I will update it shortly
with this new variation.

TB! attachment display settings?

2004-06-09 Thread Mary Bull
Hello fellow tbudl subscribers!

Attachments received stopped displaying for me in TB! v. 2.00.6
yesterday. I had changed no settings. There had been no problems with
a double-click for jpegs and docs previously, or with the right-click
Open menu choice.

1) Now this does nothing--it's as if I had not tried to open the
attachments at all. This started happening after a cousin sent me an
attachment from a Mac--possibly a .tiff format, but the icon says
.jpg, so we think she converted to .jpg before sending. So the two of
us thought perhaps it was a Mac-Windows incompatibility.

2) However, this morning jpegs from my sister on Win98SE did nothing.

3) So I went back to old messages, and attachments that had formerly
opened with a double-click did nothing.

4) All these attachments can be viewed when Saved to Desktop. There the
icon is a Gimp icon, and each opens as always with a click
(irrelevant, but I have my Desktop set to single-click).

5) So, I thought--well, maybe something in TB! is corrupted. So I
downloaded v. 2.11.02 from the RitLabs site. Went smooth as silk. I
really do like the new version.

6) I have no plug-ins installed. My anti-virus program is F-Secure,
and it makes no objection to my opening the attachments from the
Desktop.

7) My firewall is Tiny Personal Firewall, v. 4.0 and it has never made
any objection to opening attachments.

(BTW, I viewed the smileys without problems. :) )

But I still can no longer open my received attachments, except by
saving them to Desktop.

Can anyone help me fix this? Much appreciation in advance!

Hi rich

Assuming others on your LAN are not having the same problem maybe it's
time for your annual re-install of Windows!

Yeah, no one else is having this problem.

Re-install Windows? My god. Clearly hoped it wouldn't come to that as
it represents a logistical nightmare (as I'm sure you appreciate) as
the machine acts as a pseudo server to the rest of the machines on
the LAN and as such, contains all our company documents etc, mail
server, act as a print server etc.

Still, I'm due to be leaving the company next week so can probably get
away with leaving (ignoring) it.

Did both of these, following your instructions above. No help. The

TB! Only if saved elsewhere.

In an archive search, the only thing I turned up was something about a
registry key. But these keys are not in my registry. Must be something
to do only with v. 1.45 and others in the year 2000:

Begin copy-and-paste:

NA I have my Options set so _no_ attachments can be opened in TB!,
NA but for the life of me, I cannot remember where I set that Option
NA from? ...

it's in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!
keys: ProtectAllowOpen
  ProtectDisableOpen
  ProtectWarnOpen
End copy-and-paste

It's a puzzle. But thanks for the suggestion about the buttons and
menus. :)

I did a boot-drive defragmentation two days ago. Maybe lost something
there? If I get desperate, I can always use XP's Restore function. So
far it's just an extra step to view the files, so the problem remains
only an annoyance and a puzzle. :)

Wednesday, June 9, 2004, Maggie wrote:

Yes. I see how to accomplish that in the HTML editor, but how to do
this in the Plain Text (Windows Proportional)??

You can't. In a plain text message the links just are, there's no need
to indicate that it's a link. In HTML, on the other hand, you have to
say that what you mean to be a link really is a link.

That's where my unclickable links were showing. I 'spoke' to Allie
about this and he was not seeing the same thing I was reporting about
 this.

Your link showed fine here, and the only way I could manage to make it
unshowable was to use the HTML-editor and send a non-linked URL. So I am
as baffled as anyone else as to the reason why it acts as it does.

Despite enjoying the ability to select and drag text around the window
to different areas and all the other wonderful editing bells and
whistles, I have decided to continue to use the old reliable MicroEd.
I had not realized that the other editors did not wrap the text the
way I created it, wrapping to the window instead.

Maybe it's a wrapping thing. Have you tried to shorten it trough
something like http://www.makeashorterlink.com ?

This is likely an irretrievable situation through graceful means since

SK Once again, this is not going to work for any of your local folders.

Yes, it is. The .TBB file is 528k and the inbox shows all the
messages as being in there. However, if I click on any of those
messages I get the error message that the message base needs to be
repaired. Repairing it, though, doesn't make a difference -- I still

firstname.

However, now that this problem has been pointed out, I have rewritten my

and mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The work-around I've used so far is that one Ed's handle is Ed,
another Ed is Eddy, another is Edmund. In this example we see Ed
is not so much a problem.

I also have several Jeans in my address book! The only way to port
this work-around to them is as: Jean, Jean G, Jean L, etc. I
also have more than 1 Barry, so: Barry, Barry W, etc...

...snip...

So what was the original intended use for that field anyway? Without
knowing a better use for these handles I cannot see why duplicate
 handles are not allowed!

It allows you to put Jean or Eddy or Ed or JeanG or JeanL as the
recipient and have the system automatically expand the email address (and
other attributes)

Hello Ben,

That's because the messages are threaded by reference and in the case of
this thread it's a bit like a daisy chain.

BA however sometimes if there are two replies to a particular message
BA then the newest one will appear before the older msg. eg:

BA View mode... 8 June 2004, 23:50
BARe: View mode... 8 June 2004, 23:59
BA new msg--- Re: View Mode... 07:50 (today)
BA Re[2]: View mode... 07:45 (today)

I can't see how this can happen if you sort by time received...

BA What i want to achieve is that message coming in below its older
BA counterpart

Moreover, I can't say I've really noticed that or consider it a problem
since you can still follow the thread. When the discussion forks
further replies will reference to the correct message. For example, see
Mary's post: mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED].

This is what I see (threads sorted by reference/time received):

Author Received Kludges Adjusted (GMT) Order created
Feli16:32 16:55:14 +0200 14:55 1
Martin 16:57 16:52:04 +0100 15:52 3
Urban 17:36 17:20:29 +0200 15:20 2

This is correct when sorting by time received. To display messages in
the order you want use time created.

If you're still experiencing problems and are convinced the ordering is
incorrect send me a screen shot.

Hello Martin!

MB No.

MW That's does seem rather odd. How about tabs such as Part.txt? (take any
MW signed message from me in TBBETA)

Oh, I understand your question about image now. Yes, I see Part.txt
in your signed message in tbbeta. And, for example, I see:
Wrenfamilygroup.jpg 69,102 bytes in the button for one of the
attachments--the same as I see in a mouseover of the attachment
icon.

Your Clibrd1.gif example confused me. I'm even more dense than usual
at this time of day. Sorry. :(

MW Also, do you see the following in Options | Preferences | Protection?

MW ...snip

MB Yes.

MW I'm going to look into this a bit more since changing it made no
MW difference to my set up.

Thank you so much!

MW This is from the registry key:

MW
ProtectAllowOpen=*.JPG,*.JPEG,*.PNG,*.GIF,*.BMP,*.ICO,*.WMF,*.EMF,*.VCF,*.EML,*.MSG,*.ARJ,*.ZIP,*.RAR,*.TIF,*.ACE,*.LZH,*.WAV

MB I can't find this key in my registry. But surely it is there since I
MB have the file names in Options/Preferences/Protection. I opened
MB everything in the registry I could see under HKey/Current
MB User/Software/Rit/The Bat!. Didn't find that key. Strange.

MW It's in my setup _but_ I did import my registry setting when I rebuild
MW XP a few months ago so it could be redundant. I can send you that key if
MW you like.

Please. It might be worth a try. A reference to that was the only
thing I found in the tbudl archives--it was from an exchange in 2000,
when someone had blocked TB! from opening attachments and wanted to
undo it and forgotten how.

snip

MW I chose .gif simply because I could see one in my message list.
MW Nonetheless, I don't think it's a program association problem as this is
MW about TB! internal protection mechanisms.

I see.

MB So what if I emptied the fields for both Enable and Disable under
MB Protection? Would that be safe to do? I could save a copy of them and
MB put it back afterward.

MB What do you think?

MW I shouldn't be a problem so long as you know that you are opening images
MW only. I'm going to give this a try too.

Okay, I'll try that.

Okay, I've chosen external image viewer and removed a file association
in Windows to see what happens. When I double click on an icon, TB! lets
Windows decide how to open the file. However, because there is no
association TB! pops up a windows asking what application I should
open the file (image) with. Clearly, this isn't quite what you
experience but it is similar behaviour. I wonder what would happen if
there is an association but it's broken and fails to launch the
application?

Check what application is associated with .JPG by opening a Windows file
manager window and using Tools | Folder Options... | File Types.

Select JPG (or JPEG) and see what application opens the file (Change
button). There's is likely to be a couple of applications... try
changing it to Window Picture and Fax Viewer if that's not set.

Okay, I did that. JPG, JPEG, and JPI (for j peg image) were all
associated with Gimp. I must have done that when I first installed
Gimp, but I forgot that I had. Anyway, I changed the association to
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

But there is still no response when double-clicking the image icon in
The Bat! or choosing Open from the right-click menu of the icon.

This happens with the external viewer selected in
Options/Preferences/General and with it not selected. (Unchecked
box--internal viewer.)

The one effect of my file association change in the File manager is
that I see the familiar Windows flowerpot icon on my Desktop for the
lone jpeg I've left there, instead of the little gray Gimp animal
icon.

What a drag! I do appreciate all your help. And I can still view all
attachments by saving them to Desktop, which is only a couple of extra
clicks to do. I've been dragging them from there into my Picture File
folder.

Well, we have to check out all possibilities if a puzzle is to get
solved, don't we? Not that it will guarantee a solution. :) Anyway,

No. The members often feel that what others do on list is fine since
it's not moderated. They don't realize that it's being moderated
