Re: [Trisquel-users] When will Trisquel 8.0 (Flidas) release?
The one think I really like about Trisquel is the slower release cycle, the it will be done when it is done mentality. Ubuntu is its own thing, we would all be best to ignore its movements. Not having the push an shove to be out on an exact date on an exact minute so that there can be the scramble to get into the system is actually a much more relaxing style and one I can see a lof of the free software community eventually adopting. Relax. Take it easy. It will all be cool in the end.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anyone using LibertyBSD? How does it compare to Trisquel?
Thanks for the reply. I tried libertyBSD on QEMU-kvm.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel is about ethics not technology or innovation
Can't like this post enough. The technology talk while nice can drown out the really important issues.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anyone using LibertyBSD? How does it compare to Trisquel?
It's only part of fvwm, sorry. You could probably get a similar-looking workspace switcher, though. The design's fairly generic, after all.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anyone using LibertyBSD? How does it compare to Trisquel?
http://libertybsd.net/ What's the program called that looks like a workspace switcher in the lower right corner?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel is about ethics not technology or innovation
I think you are missing my point entirely. Trisquel is not about new features. Trisquel is about taking care of your freedom. So we have to wait 6 months for installing snappy packages, yeah so what? We have our freedom. Is not like we are gonna get a bunch of new programs. Most of what I already do on Trisquel won't change with the new Trisquel, I will have the same GIMP, the same LibreOffice, the same Linux-libre Kernel, and so on. Why is so important to have a new Trisquel? I just don't get it. But even in the technical aspect, it is not even so important. If you take the time to use Ubuntu 16.04 you will realize it is pretty bad. Lots of bugs. Many things working wost than ever. And like only 20 snappy packages available. Even the new Software application wasn't worth to install deb packages. It is just not worth it yet. So even in the technical aspect is better to wait for a more stable distro than rush into new shiny, but worthless things.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel is about ethics not technology or innovation
They should fix the multiple keyboard layout glitch any time soon.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anyone using LibertyBSD? How does it compare to Trisquel?
Yea, HD videos, 3D games, DVDs, etc work perfectly. LBSD's never crashed or had any errors for me when running multiple programs, or in general. And yea, I worked on deblobbing the ports tree. Hope you like LBSD when you do have a spare machine, mate.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel is about ethics not technology or innovation
Snap packages are optional and can contain 100% free software. Oh and btw... The Snap program in Ubuntu is GPLv3: https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/blob/master/COPYING

The site operators should have made wiser choices. Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel is about ethics not technology or innovation
When I'm saying "the community" I am mainly referring to the community of Trisquel. Of course I'd rather make something that would benefit people more widely and advocate free software philosophy in general than necessarily solely promote Trisquel. Thanks anyway, I haven't read that particular page.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anyone using LibertyBSD? How does it compare to Trisquel?
I use LibertyBSD as my primary OS and it runs very well. You should note that hardware support is worse than that of Trisquel-- a very noticable bit that's missing is support for athn (ThinkPenguin wifi dongles). It runs just as well as Trisquel, other than that, and follows the Unix philosophy a little more closely. If you want to use a quality and simple OS (there's a single comprehensible source tarball, for example) and learn some things about BSD along the way, you'll enjoy LibertyBSD. :) Sidenote: Absolute OpenBSD (2nd edition) is a fantastic book that outlines some it's more obtuse but powerful features. You don't need it, but I highly recommend it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] did you know about appelbaum?
Unsubstantiated allegations. It's not hard for someone to dish swill against a person they might have an issue with. Let the courts decide if it comes to that. Gossip never helps.
Re: [Trisquel-users] did you know about appelbaum?
This does not belong here. The allegations are very serious, and aren't really appropriate for us to discuss in this manner.

Imagine this post: "Hello everyone we are still working on Trisquel 8. No release date yet because it is a lot of work" Will you be okay with it? I think most wont say: "hey thanks good to know", but "I don't care I want Trisquel now". I see no point in such a post

Re: [Trisquel-users] did you know about appelbaum?
Here's the whois of that domain http://paste.debian.net/715667 Apparently the owner is someone from Austria. I find really strange that someone bought a domain just for this. There are hundreds of free services they could have hosted this. But no, a domain just for this. Makes you think.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows 7 and 8 users are starting to disable Windows Update entirely. Yikes.
hmm... you do have a point, even if google doesn't go to the same lengths in restrictions, they are worse in being "better with spying" so then I guess none of them, apple, google or microsoft is any good. meh I suspected that two out of the three were bad, but google I guess is worse than I thought maybe even more dangerous than virusking winbugs. Although that makes Google more dangerous, not more evil. Just because they have the capabilities doesn't mean they are any worse than their crappy counterparts... Either way screw their proprietary crap. unless libreboot can get a nice foothold in it... ;)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel is about ethics not technology or innovation
I don't care about these silly "snappy packages", the newest software, or the latest and greatest technology. I care about software freedom, and Trisquel seems to offer it. I know we technically don't deserve anything (according to law) if we do not financially support the project. I think we are thanking them by being here and helping to make the community stronger. As a result, I think it is fair to ask for an update, not even once a month, just regularly. A small news update about where we are and what we want to do. Is that really too much to ask? This is the issue I have with the way the project is going. It would make the community feel like they are participating more in the development. It is quite closed right now, or at least I would say that it does not really present the most inviting environment for developers. Chow.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows 7 and 8 users are starting to disable Windows Update entirely. Yikes.
Google tracks and infringes on peoples privacy no matter what the platform is. Microsoft may have some limited scope in this matter, but not like Google. Think about all the people now on Android or using Google Chrome. They have a much broader reach than Microsoft ever could have dreamed, and know more about people individually then MS has been able to up until now. Microsoft is learning from Google with Windows 10 and it's privacy issues. They are using free software and "open source" software for nefarious means. Microsoft at least up until recently made no bones about being proprietary. And don't get me started on the Trans-humanist Eric Schmidt.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to translate sentences
No it's not. Trisquel is released roughly every 2 years. Please don't expect 8 until closer to the end of 2016. Possibly not even until 2017.
Re: [Trisquel-users] netinstall; first timer's question
I just saw the screen that you posted; very cool!
Re: [Trisquel-users] When will Trisquel 8.0 (Flidas) release?
lulz, viejito, I am starting to predict your answers. I knew you'd write something like that. Btw, your post is the smartest one in this thread, being that the whole of it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows 7 and 8 users are starting to disable Windows Update entirely. Yikes.
Who are you to say they all want to conform or don't care about freedom and privacy? Most do not know. Anyway, I would say young people are least likely to conform and be content with their lot in life. Look at the strength of student movements for example.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows 7 and 8 users are starting to disable Windows Update entirely. Yikes.
More evil/less evil, I don't think we can say this. They all are bad, I don't see why Google is worse than Microsoft or Apple.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to translate sentences
Trisquel 8 is near, right? Maybe this month. :|
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows 7 and 8 users are starting to disable Windows Update entirely. Yikes.
Not to mention you would be supporting an even more evil company by buying a chromebook.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel is about ethics not technology or innovation
Just a friendly reminder for those of you that seem anxious for new releases (and other things like chromium, android, skype, spotify, the most powerful computer you can buy, and so on) : https://audio-video.gnu.org/video/short--undated--rms--free-software-four-freedoms.ogv You may want to watch it all. But if not at least watch from minute 3:30 I think many of you should remember that the point of Free Software is not about convenience or the most shiny new features. Is about your freedom, your libertad. About Ethics. I know knew shiny features may delight most computer users. But your freedom should be so important that you can wait a little for those things. If you are thinking Free Software is not that convenient and I will change to this non-free distro, remember: Freedom is worth the inconvenience. So, please, stop thinking about snappy packages and begin enjoying your LIBERTAD (FREEDOM). Also: You don't deserve updates from people fighting for your freedom. Is them who deserve a "Thank you" and a "How can I help you?". Don't think so? Well perhaps you should dedicate your life for contributing to the cause, see if you still think that after a month (if you have the balls to do that for a month without quiting).
Re: [Trisquel-users] netinstall; first timer's question
I'm running it 90% of the time and it's great ! i just changed de Black Maté https://trisquel.info/en/forum/uruk-screenshot-and-font-rendering
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows 7 and 8 users are starting to disable Windows Update entirely. Yikes.
I disagree. You cannot speak for every college student in the world because you visited a campus last month. You can't even speak for every college student on that campus! This is not an all-or-nothing venture. If we got 1% of the students turned on to the Free Software Movement, whether or not they buy a computer, then that is a big accomplishment. Then each of those students will have some impact on those around them, and so on. It is important to try and win. It is easy to say it is impossible and not even try. If we care about the Free Software Movement, we must try. My suggestion only costs time. In fact, you could have students running the tables at each University's student fairs. Progress must start somewhere. If not there, then where. It is easy to say my idea won't work. Give an idea that you think will work.
Re: [Trisquel-users] netinstall; first timer's question
Uruk seems easier since it's all set up out of the box. Thanks MD!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows 7 and 8 users are starting to disable Windows Update entirely. Yikes.
I can see the appeal of a traditional desktop or laptop with GNU/Linux for a programmer or tech savvy person at a university, but if they are an engineering or computer science student, they are aware of alternatives or run GNU/Lunux already. As for the average 18-22 year old, they are more concerned about image and conformity at this stage in their life. Hence the Apple laptop for school and their Beats by Dre headphones plugged into their iPhone when they walk around campus. They don't care about software freedom or privacy as they post every detail of their life online since it is convenient. I know what I am saying may sound shocking to you, but it's what I noticed when I visited a family member on campus last month.
[Trisquel-users] Anyone using LibertyBSD? How does it compare to Trisquel?
Anyone here who uses in real hardware LibertyBSD? What tasks you usually do with it, and how well does it perform compared to a Trisquel machine? I have always been curious about BSD and once thought about using OpenBSD, so LIbertyBSD is appealing to me. Though I am very very happy with my Trisquel machine for about a year now, I would maybe try out Liberty if it was good enough and I had a spare machine. Give me feedback please :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows 7 and 8 users are starting to disable Windows Update entirely. Yikes.
Lots of people think that way until they learn about the issues. Why are you here when you can use a MacBook or tablet?
Re: [Trisquel-users] When will Trisquel 8.0 (Flidas) release?
Anybody who has read even half of what I've written in this thread knows what I think on these issues. We are going around in circles; We are repeating ourselves. Ruben has already given a timeline here: https://trisquel.info/en/new-cycle-what-we-achieved-and-whats-come Ruben said, "This year [2016] will bring us Trisquel 8, codename "Flidas" So, unless something really new comes up, I will stop posting on this subject until at least: January 1, 2017
Re: [Trisquel-users] When will Trisquel 8.0 (Flidas) release?
Ruben says he was hired as a senior system administrator--that has other responsibilities. Ruben said, "I'm now in a job situation more compatible with the project" This implies to me that his new job will make it easier to find time to work on Trisquel. It does not imply to me that his job at the FSF is to work on Trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] When will Trisquel 8.0 (Flidas) release?
If I have to wait two years for a new release of Trisquel, I rather eat other flavors of yogurt Ice cream. This trisquel started to taste like an expired by date paico,,,
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows 7 and 8 users are starting to disable Windows Update entirely. Yikes.
College students are more interested in MacBooks and tablets than an underpowered laptop with a Windows XP interface. Have you walked around a campus lately or been in their library? You will see the Apple logo everywhere.
Re: [Trisquel-users] When will Trisquel 8.0 (Flidas) release?
Ruben is employed by the FSF now, so he can concentrate on Trisquel. He is getting paid no matter what and why it would be surprising if Trisquel 8 took so long.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Laptop too hot - CPU (almost) always at 100%
As far as I am aware, no I don't have any other stuff running on the background. And truth be said, I only see kworker eating my CPU,no other processes. I ran the command you suggested and there was no "recoll" or "recollindex" on the list. I will try to run that again when I have the issue happening. I have decided that for now I will simply not use suspend/hibernate/whatever since that apparently prevents the issue from happening. Also, I was offered a cooler pad recently and it should alleviate the heating up if and when it happens. As for hardware I don't know... I don't use the ethernet port, so I shouldn't have to disable it right? Same for webcam?
Re: [Trisquel-users] When will Trisquel 8.0 (Flidas) release?
"You are paying him to work on the project" Really? OK, well you are not paying him anywhere near enough to keep him from quitting and taking a consulting job that pays 10x as much money. In fact, he is sacrificing a lot of money to help YOU and you owe him a lot more money for doing that. So, again, he doesn't owe you anything. Let me make it even clearer: Tell you what, I'll pay you $5/hour (maybe--if you are lucky!) if you work 20 hours / week in addition to whatever else you do with your real job, friends, family, etc... Here are some conditions to this wonderful job for $5/hour: 1.) I won't guarantee you that you will get the $5/hour 2.) If consulting work comes up that pays $50/hour you will not have time to take it. Your priority is this $5/hour job!! 3.) You are to report to me when I tell you to report to me. If you do not, I will complain every day and call you unprofessional and perhaps even fire you (if you didn't quit already!) 4.) You will explain to others that it takes about 2 years between major releases of your work. They will bother you every single day after only 1.5 years has passed. Maybe you are right. Maybe he should be grateful for the $5/hour and the obnoxious behavior of his 'employer'. Jobs are scarce right now. He might not even be able to get a job pumping gasoline or delivering pizza where he would make more money! Maybe we should wait until somebody comes along who would appreciate the pittance and the abuse. I'm sure Ruben would be happy to quit and give that person the reins. That should work out really well...until they quit. If you want professional results, pay a professional salary

Re: [Trisquel-users] When will Trisquel 8.0 (Flidas) release?
Well... I've donated some BC to ask forgiveness for reviving this post with such a discussion... Considering the user base, I wouldn't expect Trisquel coming sooner than Elementary OS (last blog post on 26th of April) or Linux Mint. Everything can be improved, and a better approach might be: What can we do to help?
Re: [Trisquel-users] When will Trisquel 8.0 (Flidas) release?
"What sacrifices are you making by using Trisquel 7 that you won't have to make once Trisquel 8 comes out?" I'm sure some of us would really want to try out KDE 5 (if not me)
