In message 214234.57230...@web51710.mail.re2.yahoo.com, Don Robinson donr_w...@yahoo.com writes Perhaps a bigger push into the open source space would help. I recently read that MySQL has a long history of bugs, like losing all your data, and some of them will not be fixed. Yet it remains the most popular free database. For those who haven't been following the news, it's just been announced that Oracle are buying Sun. Sun bought MySQL a year or so ago. So what will happen to MySQL is debateable ... Oh - and as for bugs, and some of them will not be fixed, I doubt that's true any more. It *WAS* a deliberate design decision that MySQL was optimised to give a very fast read-only backend for things like web databases. It's now turning into a full-blown industrial-strength database. We have a better mouse trap, why doesn't the world know it? Because they've been conned by the relational, it's maths so it must be right mantra, without realising that the 12 rules underneath it are rubbish. Just, my 2 cents worth. BTW, I'm looking for programming work! Universe, Unidata, jBASE, etc. Linux, Aix, Windows, Mac. So am I, unfortunately ... :-( Cheers, Wol -- Anthony W. To their surprise many of us are refusing to let the U2 die. I think the problem WAS (apparently the people involved have moved on) that the top people in the DB2 group (of which U2 is a part) were very heavily emotionally involved in DB2 itself. They've now been replaced with people who are a bit more business-minded, and who realise that the U2 databases are valuable. Maybe U2 will do an Informix on IBM (remember when Informix took over Ardent it turned into a reverse-takeover, and it was Informix that came off worse :-) Laurie Cheers, Wol -- Anthony W. [U2] Getting a graphical view of my data in UniVerse
I'd like to know if there are any applications out there that could help me get a good graphical view of my data in UV. I have inherated a UV system that spans 25+ years of service with our company. I have had only 6 months of catchup to get up to speed on UV and how we use it. My primary goal is to document as much about the system as possible and try to get a good idea of current state so that I can then begin to plan out our future state. Re: [U2] UV to SAP migration disaster
All I think we all neeed to recognize that IBM *could* have just sat on the products milking the revenue without adding any enhancements, trusting that sufficient users would never move off to keep a meaningful revenue stream alive. To their credit, they have not. We have seen new features, improved platform support, the creation of the U2 Universities, podcasts and other moves in the right direction. Of course I would always like to see more (grin) but having the IBM name on the products has been a big plus and I'm very grateful that they have shown faith in the products - whatever the stories around how they acquired them. [U2] U2 Application / Solutions providers list? PICK / U2 Hits? Any ERP Light applications out there?
Hello folks, A good number of years ago, there used to be a published list / document / book of various PICK / U2 Solutions Providers or Value Added Resellers and ISV (aka Independent Software Vendors) listing the VAR or ISV, their vertical markets served, and descriptions of the applications they provided, (I think it was called PICK HITS or something like that?). Is there anything similar produced/published these days? It would appear that such a document would be an excellent vehicle for the continued proliferation of the multi-valued market. (IBM U2 Marketing - where are you?) I too am out of work, but in discussions with a small local MFG type operation about an IT Manager opportunity. One of the main aspects they're looking for in this IT Manager position is someone to find, and implement an ERP Light application. It should be noted these folks have previously attempted a Epicor solution that they were sold that when it came time to implement, they discovered that this Epicor product did not do what this company needed at all. This company was promised what they wanted it to do could be done, but then learned well AFTER shelling out big $$, (after expected delivery time of the mod's), that what they wanted was not currently possible, but could be attained with 10X the previously shelled out big $$ and a couple of years of development time from the Epicor development team. Needless to say, that implementation fell flat on its face, and now they're out looking again. Looking for something that does Sales Orders and Sales History, Inventory Control, AP / AR Financials and maybe a few other basic MFG type related applications. RE: [U2] Getting a graphical view of my data in UniVerse
Hi Norman [AD] line for the confused :) I have a product called mvScan that may go some way towards what you need. This iterates through a UniVerse system building maps of the file relations (parsing TRANS, XLATE, SUBR, Tcorrelatives etc) and analyzing source and object code (file opens, reads, writes, executes, subroutine calls, common blocks, include files, variables and constants used etc.), PROCs, Paragraphs, menus and other definitions. It's highly extensible so you can adapt it to the conventions of your applications, e.g. pulling documentation out of standard program headers and the like. THe result is a huge store of information written away: not graphical but for searching and analysis (you could probably export it to Visio, I just haven't needed to do so - generally the systems are too large to make a graphical view meaningful). More relevant to your aims, it can also generate HTML documentation that can drill through the application. Contact me offlist if you're interested. Re: [U2] UV to SAP migration disaster
It's fun to think of UV as the underdog and how the cards are stacked against us. It's fun to be in the I told you so crowd when the competitor fails. But it doesn't matter if the competitor wins or loses; the reality is that another UV site has bit the dust. WE LOST -- that's my real concern. What didn't happen to prevent this conclusion? While it seems politically correct to point the finger at incompetent management, or ineffective vendor marketing, there's possibly another contributing factor, one that we as a group seem reluctant to talk about... the fact that we (U2 professionals) have dropped the ball. I can't help but think that if Shane Co. had a complete, cost-effective U2 application that supported all aspects of their business, there would have been no reason to move away from it to SAP. Management doesn't really care about pretty pixels nor usability. If that's what they're telling you, then they probably think they're doing you a favor by putting it in terms you can understand. Ladies and gentlemen, it's always about money. Being a group of experienced U2 business analysts, you'd think we'd know by now that it's always about (a) increasing revenue, (b) reducing expense, (c) bringing in more customers, (d) getting more business from the customers we have, and (e) reducing risk. Every discussion with management must be framed exclusively in these terms. Only then will management give you the right to contribute your opinion to a decision. As a side benefit, they will be wary of competitor salesmen that cannot articulate specific revenue and expense advantages. Hard dollar figures, i.e. money, speaks louder than marketing. You want to put a new GUI on that old application? Management won't stop you if you can prove it will make money or reduce support cost. But don't be fooled; some bulls**t cost analysis won't buy you any credibility with management. Don't expect management will do this analysis for you; if they could, they'd already be doing it. Back to prevention -- it takes a very deliberate and thoughtful cost-justification strategy to build up your existing U2 application. RE: [U2] UV to SAP migration disaster
Speak of the devil. Here's an example from today. The Joint Strike Fighter project in the US, in which Britain's BAE Systems is a major partner has been infiltrated by hackers. The Wall Street journal reported that the hackers thought to be from China siphoned off several terabytes of data related to the design of the fighter and electronics systems. The problem isn't Windows. WIndows is what it is. It's the managers who have forgotten how to do their jobs because of the lax attitude in the industry now. And I do blame Microsoft largely for that. To Lockheed Martin and BAE systems credit, the hackers were not able to get everything. Sources told the Journal that while spies downloaded a lot of information about the Joint Strike Fighter they could get access to the most sensitive material stored on computers not connected to the Internet. The best line I have seen on this thread thus far. Really we are all human (even those PHB's) , are prone to errors and blinded by our ambitions. Some make small mistakes that never get noticed. Others make huge mistakes that have disastrous consequences. It is well told story that plays out each and every day since the dawn of human civilization. Re: [U2] UV to SAP migration disaster
But it's always about the money. If the current UV system is perceived to be incomplete, management is FORCED to decide between buy or build -- both take money. And they will automatically lean towards the solution they are familiar with (just like we do.) As UV professionals, we need to address this human dynamic: Mr.NewGuy came from a place where he used Feature X. Your UV application doesn't have Feature X, so Mr.NewGuy sees the it as incomplete or lacking. Mr.NewGuy knows first-hand that this feature benefits the business (i.e. makes or saves money). Have too many of these missing features and Mr.NewGuy has no choice but to SPEND MONEY and replace the whole system. Real or not, Mr.NewGuy feels the pressure to do SOMETHING because he FEELS the old system is losing money. So how do we address this? Strategy 1: Don't fool yourself. Just because you have a working application in production doesn't mean it couldn't be significantly better. Strategy 2: Anticipate and implement useful features. Study your competitor's systems and stay informed of the latest solutions to business problems. Don't have Excel export capability? Get it. Don't have mobile applications? Get them. Strategy 3: Always make your managers look good. Mr.NewGuy has revenue and budget goals -- build an application that meets those goals. If Mr.NewGuy is meeting his business goals, there's no reason for him to tell the CEO or board to buy a new system. Strategy 4: Always have a higher ratio of revenue projects vs. infrastructure projects. Face the fact that GUI'izing you legacy application is an infrastructure project and will more than likely cost the company more than it gains. Balance infrastructure projects against a larger number of revenue projects, or perhaps even rolling infrastructure changes into your revenue projects. Stop doing those quick and dirty reports that everyone wants but don't generate any revenue or savings. Strategy 5: Sell your U2 application to management. YOU need to constantly market your product to management (but of course you really need to believe in it first). By product I mean both your U2 application and the services you provide to benefit the company. rex Jeff Schasny wrote: Unfortunately, its not always about the money. RE: [U2] Uniobjects
Something that we implemented for our Data Access Layer to improve performance with UniObjects.NET was a custom connection pool (before IBM released connection pooling in UniObjects.NET) and in that connection pool, all the idle connections were kept active for a specified time, and had a heartbeat that opened a specific file and read a record from it every few seconds.. It worked quite effectively, but we have now updated to using the IBM connection pool.. the theory however remains.. Build a controller that handles the opening, allocation, un-allocation, idling, reallocation and closing of a connection to the backend. Then the process would be as simple as requesting a new connection from the Controller, which would either create a new connection, or allocate an existing but idle connection. Then when you are finished with the connection, you relinquish control of that connection back the Controller, which idles the connection for a specified amount of time for easy reuse before closing it if it is not re-requested... The startup of UniObjects Server the timeout is usually set to about an hour. That value can be changed to as long as you need. However, we have found that the connection is not persistant and will eventually time out. Our U2WebLink middleware for Apache Tomcat has a connection manager that checks on the connections that UniObjects that have been made with Universe or Unidata. If they are not in use, then they are checked to make sure they are working. If the connections are not working the are removed by the connection manager and re-initiated. We use an open source job scheduler package called Quartz to do this. We have a call center and other high demand clients running this code. If you want to proceed and write your own code be prepared to spend 3 to 4 times what you think it will take. UniObject's connection manager is no easy task and not for the faint at heart. It takes quite a lot of code to make sure you handle all of the UniObjects error conditions and maintain that reliability you need. Yes. As Marc said you can have a heartbeat. We do this as a way to keep the connect overhead down. I've had connections open for over a month. RE: [U2] Uniobjects [AD]
From: Doug Averch If you want to proceed and write your own code be prepared to spend 3 to 4 times what you think it will take. UniObject's connection manager is no easy task and not for the faint at heart. It takes quite a lot of code to make sure you handle all of the UniObjects error conditions and maintain that reliability you need. This is one of the many reasons why we use, recommend, and sell mv.NET. Pooling is built-in, and you have a lot of flexibility to create and modify profiles to suit specific requirements, rather than writing custom code. It's quite inexpensive and just this feature will save you weeks of coding time - time which is better spent on real application work. Please contact me for details and a free trial. Yes and also to create a local agency records management system. Most police chiefs and sheriffs are willing to share their information but we must provide a comprehensive local database. This overcomes points of: 1. Must be Windows (and browser) based. 2. They must own and control their own local databases. 3. Gives them ownership and control of sharing 4. Provides standard crime reporting (which saves significant resources alone) 5. Local database fully indexed to assure easy and comprehensive access 6. Many other points/issues/concerns to numerous to list... Bob What would you use Revelation OpenInsight for? This is the MV problem. Bobby gets the FUNDS $$ and then expects FREE help. If he knew how to submit a grant proposal he would have include at least 2,000 hours in development at $120/hour and another 500 hours in training at $100/hour plus the cost of O/S and MV licensing and hardware costs. RE: [U2] UV (SAP's).. GOOGLE funds for MV worldwide !
Gary, Good points. NO ONE gets any income with these funds. They are strictly for expenses. I am already a retired law enforcement person. I have retirement income. I am not greedy. I know that this kind of sharing is desperately needed in our country and all the other countries as well. The first system is essentially proof of concept. We have done it in the 90's so we know what to do and what NOT to do. The first system (USA) is also a principally near a 100% donation from all parties. An amazing list of vendors have graciously agreed in principle to donate. There will be one large server per country. All subsequent systems will be funded by their respective countries. When this system goes into production then certain proven people, from the gracious volunteers, will be paid as consultants for projects around the world on a continuing basis. Most people will be able to work from home. Others will have from little travel to significant travel as needed should they so accept. We have dozens of volunteers from law enforcement, and from the technical professionals. Interesting also is the fact that other database engine suggestions have come up. We know what works and we are sticking to it. A few of our goals include a world wide system and the massive use of MV in multiple languages. BTW, the proposed Board of Directors includes many high level, professional and elected officials. These people will guide us in doing the best possible job we can do. Hope that you will be one of our many volunteers. Bob This is the MV problem. Bobby gets the FUNDS $$ and then expects FREE help. Rudy, Rest assured that a project of this scope has the proposed vendors 100% on their toes. Without verifying the final answer I can state that this challenge will be met. Bob - I understand that Open Insight is unable to run in Vista, not that it makes any difference, how would you get around this limitation should the need arise? I'm only asking because I've also thought of Open Insight but was hesitant because of just that limitation. rudy --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/
[U2] Need assistance replicating UniObjects.NET issue
Does anyone have any insight into how to create the following error. Error Message: IBMU2.UODOTNET.UniXMLException: Unable to read data from th transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the re host.[IBM U2][UODOTNET - UNIRPC][ErrorCode=81009] The RPC failed[IBM U2][UODOTNET - UNICLIENT][ErrorCode=91] Please verify UniVerse or UniData Version. This feature may not be supported in older UniVerse or UniData version. UNIDATA 7.1.0 Windows 2003 I've tried killing the udapislave.exe process associated with the connection and then accessing the connection. I get a similar error but not this one. I've tried to sleep to long but noticed I we don't set the timeout property on the UniObject and the default is no timeout. So it just sits there waiting. I haven't tried unplugging the network cable yet or mimicking some network interruption. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Re: [U2] U2 Application / Solutions providers list? PICK / U2 Hits? Any ERP Light applications out there?
Norman, I don't know anything about Ohmart but Google brings up an Ohmart/Vega manufacturing co. in Cincinnati. I don't think OHM Systems has any connection to it but it's possible since I've heard that it was converted from Cobol way back when. OHM was called Mandata in the 70's or 80's. The president is Suresh Anbil. They have a number of modules for a range of manufacturing companies.
