OT: Ugly fonts
Hello BIll, thanks for your information about Appearance -- Effects -- Clear type. I have complained about ugly fonts on Windows XP (with a screen resolution of 1152x864) for several years now, and no one knew about this (or cared to suggest this for me). Now I wonder: When a new computer is delivered to a private user, will the box with Clear type be default setting, or is is just Standard that is the default? Is the resolution 1280x1024 now used as default? Re: AW: Ugly fonts
Thanks to you and to Bill for your useful information. Here's what I have found out after testing (I use Verdana all over): Resolutions 1024x768 and 1152x864: With textsize 18 and 24, plain style (white text on coloured background) I would recommend my users to turn on Clear type Textcolor 100,100,100 (greyish black), textstyle bold, textsize 13 and 14 may appear a little too hard/dark with Clear type on. Resolution 1280x1024: It does not matter whether Clear type or Standard or none is used. SIgne Marie Sanne Den 12. apr. 2007 kl. 15:06 skrev Tiemo Hollmann TB: As a Windows user I didn't even know about the cleartype option. Is the resolution 1280x1024 now used as default? It all depends on the particular OEM. ClearType was specifically developed for LCD displays, and some people do not find it helpful when using a CRT-style display. As LCDs have fallen in price and improved in quality, almost all new systems ship with LCDs. And of course notebooks use LCDs as well. So, the smart OEM will probably ship with ClearType on by default. The last time I purchased a retail standalone copy of XP Professional, the Standard method was enabled by default. This could easily be different now, as Microsoft tweaks things over time. The standard resolutions also depend on the display shipped with the system. Usually its set to whatever the native resolution of the LCD happens to be. Having said all of that, I tried distributing a standalone some time ago that looked much better with ClearType activated. I found that most users did NOT have this option turned on. I tried to use a registry hack to turn it on for them, but either I didn't know what I was doing, or some additional step was needed besides updating the registry. So I ended up just providing instructions for people to do this on their own. Even with ClearType turned on, Windows fonts appear thinner, overall, than Mac ones. This is partly due to font metrics on the two systems, and partly because Macs use a darker smoothing algorithm than PCs. - Bill ___ use-revolution mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please visit this url to subscribe, unsubscribe and manage your subscription preferences: http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution ___ use-revolution mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please visit this url to subscribe, unsubscribe and manage your subscription preferences: http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution ___ use-revolution mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please visit this url to subscribe, unsubscribe and manage your subscription preferences: http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution

Re: Duration of non supported applications
Many thanks to Bill, David and Devin for your comments. Since there seems to be no willingness (or resources) from our faculty to engage a new person to replace me, I'll stick to Bill's advice and update the programs to 2.8. I do this because I think the contents of many of the programs may still be valid for a decade. for instance phonetical transcription of English, the terminology used in analysis of poems, grammatical exercises (even if the grammar terminology as such tends to change more often than I like) etc. The programs have been developed for the study of English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Boruca, Norwegian as a second language. In some of the programs, however, there are descriptions, translations of sentences in Norwegian, so they can be only used by Norwegians. The most eager ones to make use of the programs have been the distance learning students, they are mostly more mature people than our regular students. I'll probably be back with questions concerning the upgrading. Thank you again. Re: Duration of non supported applications
Devin, Since there seems to be scarce interest on behalf of our faculty to support the programs I have developed through 20 years, perhaps I should give them away free, at least to Revolution's educational community. All the time I have worked firmly convinced that they may prove most useful for the learning. This has been confirmed by some of the students, but most part of them seem not to have worked with them. However, in recent years I have no idea about how much they have worked with the programs, since the link to downloading the portal stack is available in their students' network (or whatever it is called) and they probably work with them at home. I still think the way they are distributed is fabulous, just one downloading of the portal stack (which I call the menu stack). Hello to the list After having used MetaCard since 1989 I'm now retiring from my job and there is no one to follow up my work. Both I and the institute are worried about further usage of the educational programs I have developed for various foreign languages at our University. Many of the programs are purely textual, whereas some make use of QuickTime (only on Mac) and Microsoft Multimedia Tools for sound and graphic files. So far I have used MetaCard and engine 2.6.6. The programs make use of a portal stack (thanks to Sivakatirswami) which downloads/opens the various educational programs. This downloading is done by http. My questions to the group: If the institute and the students are happy with the programs as they are with no urgent need to change anything, for how many years can we count on their functioning? 5? 10? Should I convert them all to latest version of Revolution? Would this secure a longer life for them? Can we count on a contiuous existence of QuickTime and Microsoft Multimedia Tools when new systems arrive? I would be happy to hear your opions. Re: Umlaut--Success!
Hello Devin, I'm afraid none of the methods can be used. I have lots of texts in which I use # for the n with umlaut. These will be fed into fields on the fly appearing with the correct letter instead of the #. So far I have used images for various text sizes which work reasonably well. My problem arose when I wanted to select a line in the text, then having to change the colour of the image as well. So I think I'll stick to the images, just double the sets of images with selection colours as well. Thanks for all the help from you and Mark. Enable the Unicode Hex Input method in the International system prefs under the input tab. This will cause the Unicode Hex Input method to appear in the input menu (the one with the little flags on the right side of the menubar.) 3. Position the insert cursor in the field, choose Unicode Hex Input from the input menu, then type : n (then, holding alt/option key down) 0308 the n with umlaut should appear. Sorry, don't know how to do this via direct input in Windows. However, the following should work on either OS: 1. Create a UTF-8 encoded text file that includes the desired character. I used BBedit, making sure I chose a font that supported unicode (Tahoma or Lucida Grande should work) and that the document encoding was set to UTF-8, then created the n-umlaut character just as I described in #3 above. 2. Save the file to disk. 3. Read it in to your rev fld using the uniencode() function. I've created a stack that shows how to do this. go stack url http://revolution.byu.edu/unicode/testUnicode.rev; You may also want to download the utf-8 file from http:// revolution.byu.edu/unicode/textUni.ut8. So here it goes: You have two identical fields (F1 and F2), both are ordinary scrolling fields with dontwrap set to false and listbehavior set to false. - In field F1 you display the phrases. Copy the text of fld F1 to fld F2. - set the layer of the copied field lower than the layer of field F1 (that is, you put fld F2 under fld F1) - set the textcolor of char 1 to -1 of fld F2 to white - which is the colour of the background (in this way the text is invisible) - move fld F2 a little to the left (0,5 cm or so) - group the two fields. In the group script put: on scrollbardrag set the scroll of fld F2 to the scroll of fld F1 end scrollbardrag - in the script of fld F1 you put: put word 2 of the clickLine into snr set textcolor of char 1 to -1 of fld F2 to white (deletes the previous bullet) put into char 1 of line snr of fld F2 (this is the bullet equivalent, it is not displayed correctly in this email) set textcolor of char 1 of line snr of fld F2 to 255,102,102 I'll upload a stack to show this within a few hours. I must admit that the possibility of setting the backgroundcolor of lines in a field was new to me! However, I had not explained enough about the field. It serves to show the phrases with all occurrences of one word. I have already coloured this one word and was looking for a way to focus the line the user clicks. Martin's solution would have been ideal to me but for one reason: The letter v is displayed as superscript and the background colour of all the v's on the clicked line is as well treated as superscript, ie. lifted a few millimeters above the line. So what I am looking for is either how to put a graphic underneath the line, or a bullet to the left of the field to mark the line, the way it is done in the script editor window. I need to think hard about this solution - are there any serious size limitations? If it could replace 1000 cards, some containing c. 100k text, it would be FAST... Glad you liked it. It is actually a very useful way of handling data. Since I discovered it, I have gradually replaced my many data cards in each stack with only one single data card with custom properties. I do not know about size limitations, others have to answer that. In my project for the Indian dialect Boruca, I use 143 various custom properties totalling 1700 lines of data. This is for teaching the dialect itself (vocabulary training, gapfilling and translation exercises and other types of exercises/games + grammatical analysis of the corpus + vocabulario in which a certain word can be seen in all the contexts in which it occurs). -- Signe Marie Sanne 1. amanuensis/Senior lecturer Romansk institutt Tlf.+47 55 58 21 27 Øisteins gt. 1 Epost: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Universitetet i Bergen http://www.hf.uib.no/hfolk/mlab/Info/sms.html ___ use-revolution mailing list use-revolution@lists.runrev.com http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution
Re: Stack file size
Lars Brehmer skrev: This is probably only of interest if you are a Rev user without much coding expertise like myself and are working with stacks and standalones that contain thousands of actual Rev cards, instead of using a data base. Hello Lars A suggestion from another language program developer: I would suggest that you get rid of the thousands of cards. When I started with HyperCard I used lots of cards. Now I just make one editing card for each model of exercise, then there is no need to have extra cards containing the data. All the relevant data is then put into a custom property either of the card itself or of the stack, or elsewhere. So no need for a database. Each time I need to change anything I go to the same editing card, fetches all the relevant data from the custom property and put them into the various fields, do my changes and put it back into the custom property. One simple example to make it clearer: For a gapfilling exercise you need only the card on which the student does the exercise + an editing card for the same exercise. Let's say you have 10 exercises with verbs. The relevant data may be like this: 1. w3 r2 The boy fetches water. 2. w2 r8 Mary wants to study English. etc. I usually put all the relevant data into the same phrase. The second word (w3) indicates the word to be filled in, the third word (r2) is a reference to a rule etc. In this way I use just one field on the editing card (for instance called datafelt. On the exercise card the word no. 3 will be replaced with ... or --- or or similar in the first phrase, word no. 2 in the second phrase. The same words are the key which the program matches with the student's answer. The set of sentences is then saved into a custom property: put datafelt into f put gr into kust -- for the grammar exercises put Ver after kust -- to indicate a verb exercise put 3a after kust -- to indicate which number and that there may be a 3b, 3c --as well set the kust of this cd to the htmlText of fld f Then each time you need to make changes, you go to the editing cd,fetch the data and put it into fld kustfelt: ask Which exercise? with grVer --You have to add the number if it is empty or the result is cancel then exit mouseUp put it into kust set the htmlText of fld kustfelt to the kust of this cd htmlText is used in order to maintain the various diacritics across platforms. I have created a separate card within my application that does this, but I'm struggling with how to take the font choices from this card and apply them back to the main card. The main card has the field edtText which is where the styled text is. On the secondary card, I set gFontName and gFontSize to hold the font name and size, as determined by the users choice from the various fields. What I have tried is: set textFont of field edtText of card id 1002 of stack Text Change to tFontName set textSize of field edtText of card id 1002 of stack Text Change to tFontSize (I'd like to just do this with the selectedChunk, but I'm taking it a step at a time!). This doesn't have any effect on the text in the field. I'm guessing that my syntax is wrong, but I wondered if anyone was able to help? Try: set textFont of char 1 to -1 of fld... (char -1 = last char) set textSize of char 1 to -1 of fld... set textStyle of char 1 to -1 of fld... For these 3 text attributes you can set the attributes for chunks, whereas for textHeight you just set it for the whole field. I have also struggled with this one. My way to do it: put the width of grc 1 - then add or subtract from the result and set the width again. By the way I miss the line option (I know Klaus' tools got it, but it would be nice to have it directly both in Revolution and MetaCard.) It sounds like you have a copy of the answer dialog as a substack of your main stack. (This often happens if you created the stack in MC and imported some resources.) You'll need to delete the copy that is embedded in the stack. Yes, thank you, this was actually the case. In MetaCard I go to Stack Properties -- Components and then delete a resource, but is it possible to do it in Revolution as well? I don't think there is an IDE-native way to do it. If you still have MC it is easiest to just remove it there. In Revolution, you can do it from the message box: delete stack answer dialog of stack myMainstack Be sure to use the long stack reference, or you might accidentally remove the IDE's answer dialog instead. (C) This year I decided to port the stack to Mac OS X, and hopefully Windows, using RunRev. (D) I switched to a newer font, IPAPhon, built by the original author of PalPhon. It comes in both Mac and Windows TrueType versions; since OS X can use either format, I used the windows TTFs for maximum compatibility). (E) I do all my work on a Mac running OS X, but I have access to RunRev for Windows and a decent Windows 2000 PC. On my Windows XP there is no trace of IPAPhon, so I guess it is not part of the preinstalled fonts. If your students work in a Windows lab, you have to install the font on the computers. I have chosen this strategy: When students have to work with phonetical symbols at home computers, I have always avoided to let them have to install any fonts. Instead I have done the development on the platform with the phonetical font, in this case on Mac. Then - for each symbol I have used Import -- Snapshot to create a small image of it. Voilà, no more need for having phonetical fonts present on either platform. Hope this may give you some ideas to go on with. Re: sentences as items
You can do it one of two ways. I am using .rtf files and reading them in at run-time so that I have styled text. What I first did was use the command set the clipboardData[text] to NumToChar(160) in the Rev Message Box. Then I opened my text editor and pasted where necessary. It worked well. But then I moved my file to the Mac. Because it's a higher ASCII character, it didn't display right on the Mac. So what I ended up doing was putting some other lower ASCII character like ~ (or anything that's not very likely) in my files instead of the actual delimiter character. I would suggest using # as delimiter since you find it easily (in the same way and place) on the keyboard for both Windows and Mac. -- 1. amanuensis Signe Marie Sanne e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Romansk Institutttel: +47 55 58 21 27 Oysteins gt. 1 5007 Bergen http://www.hf.uib.no/hfolk/mlab/hjem/default.html Norway ___ use-revolution mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution
Re: OT: Elegant Cross Platform Fonts
Does someone have a short, fairly reliable, list of fonts that are likely to be found both on Mac and Windows machines? I suppose I could look at one of our windows machines here, but I am thinking someone of you has already been down this road and will already have a definitive list. In particular I am looking for a cross-platform font that is a little prettier and more elegant that Arial, for use as a large display font where I am dynamically changing the text from a customProperty and don't want to make all those text displays as images in Photoshop ahead of time (too much work and too much data) In this context we don't have really tight size parameters we have to worry about as we will just give it plenty of room (unlike when making small buttons where the type size differences for the same font across platforms can be a headache.) I used to set textfonts to Geneva on Mac and MS Sans Serif (up to 17) and Arial (for higher) on Windows. Then to my dismay I discovered that on Windows XP the font MS Sans Serif has disappeared, or perhaps just changed name to Microsoft Sans Serif. This meant that I have to change the script lines of hundreds of programs (sigh!). I have now started using only VERDANA which is a distinct and nice font and has been found on both platforms for some years now. The textsize and textheight varies just a little from one platform to another. At least it's worth a try! Re: inserting accented characters
Signe, I thought this was a plausible explanation, so I built a distribution for Win32 and tried it, but still a Rev app does not trap these key combinations and translate them into 'international' characters. I think this is starting to look like a bug. - when I press the 'AltGr' key it opens the Script Editor! When I try the 'circumflex' key followed by 'a', I just get 'a'. Ditto with 'shift'+^ - only 'a' appears. Without having tested this, I guess this happens in the development mode. If your stack is to be used as a standalone, I think it will work. Bernard, I just downloaded Revolution on my Windows 2000, made a standalone and tested the accented letters. Here on my (Norwegian) keyboard everything works fine. In development mode there's a problem with accent aigu (é), since AltGr + accent key opens the Properties window. Kevin, what can be done with this? Both French and Spanish make extensive use of this accent! -- 1. amanuensis Signe Marie Sanne e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Romansk Institutttel: +47 55 58 21 27 Oysteins gt. 1 5007 Bergen http://www.hf.uib.no/hfolk/mlab/hjem/default.html Norway ___ use-revolution mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution
Re: inserting accented characters
Signe. Thank you for going to the trouble of doing that. I think that this indicates that it is some setting in Windows 2000. Given that one cannot know what the user's settings are (and that as an application developer one probably shouldn't rely on being able to reconfigure these), and given that different OSs use different keyboard-combo shortcuts to display these characters, I think that I am right to go with my character-to-button palette mapping. I want to have a technique that is easy for the user to use and that is cross-platform and that is independent of any settings on the machine on which my app runs. It also has the benefit that it can be used for other purposes e.g. for applications where users have key phrases that they need to insert often - these could be placed in the list and then generate a selection palette. Incidentally, I remember earlier on you seemed to think the palette idea was not the way to go. Was this because you thought it important to protect the screen real-estate or because you knew I would run into technical difficulties on transferring the text between stacks? I think I will eventually get round the final technical difficulty I am having. But if not, I will start to look at ways of putting the list of 'international' character on the card itself. Hello again Bernard (I thought you were asleep at this hour? Are you in Europe?) You really got me thinking. First of all, what you say about settings in Windows 2000, I do not think is the case. Will, please, users on other Window platforms chime in and confirm the use of the accented letters in standalones? Or is it the English keyboard which creates the problem, but you do have the two accent keys available? Only if you are sure the users can not make use of the accent keys, then I would go for a palette or a specific card. The most user friendly way would be to have the users click on an accented letter and let scripting insert it in the text field. But I would use a palette or a card for the rest of strange letters, such as c cedille, o+e in French, tilde in Spanish. If you then want to give the user the possibility to save key phrases, I would have made a button Insert new phrase or Insert new accented letter (on a card). This would open an Ask window in which the user writes what he needs, and then your scripting would add this to the list, or insert a new button or whatever you choose. Now I think this is getting complicated, so I'll stop here. -- 1. amanuensis Signe Marie Sanne e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Romansk Institutttel: +47 55 58 21 27 Oysteins gt. 1 5007 Bergen http://www.hf.uib.no/hfolk/mlab/hjem/default.html Norway ___ use-revolution mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution
Re: inserting accented characters
Signe Thanks for replying. However, I'm a bit confused by your reply. Does this relate to a pallete of accents that I create myself: I'm still not sure I understand you; wasn't your aim to let users type text included accented letters into a field? This was what I replied to, ie. how a user type the accented letters. -I have students in French, Italian, Spanish, German, Norwegian typing various accented letters into a field. A small instruction text available on demand on each screen explains how to type, and in my experience they learn it very quickly. Perhaps the misunderstanding relates to accented letters which I have interpreted as letters with accent aigu, umlaut etc. If you were thinking of other unusual letters such as ç (c cédille), ¦ (o+e), the Scandinavian æ, ø, å etc. (I do not know if these letters come across in this posting since I'm on a Mac), the situation is different. In that case it is convenient to have the letters present on the screen, either in a specific field or as name/label of buttons. When a letter is chosen (clicked on), just let your scripting take care of inserting it after the last character of the field. If you prefer a text field you put the following script into the field (which is locked): on mouseUp put the clickText after fld fieldname end mouseUp If you use buttons: on mouseUp put the short name of the target -- or: put the label of the target-- after fld fieldname end mouseUp If you want to make use of a palette, you can place the text or the buttons on it, but there is no need for a palette. I usually have a button on a screen labeled How to type or similar. When clicked, a field appears with the appropriate help. -- 1. amanuensis Signe Marie Sanne e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Romansk Institutttel: +47 55 58 21 27 Oysteins gt. 1 5007 Bergen http://www.hf.uib.no/hfolk/mlab/hjem/default.html Norway ___ use-revolution mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution
Re: Stacks delivered via the web?
Hello Judy, I have used stacks delivered via the web to various students for more than a year, and I must admit that each time I'm looking at the downloading I still feel lucky to how discovered this genial solution and think you should go for it. In previous years when I saw descriptions of it I did not understand all the things which had to be done to implement it (perhaps it was me not being a native speaker, or perhaps the descriptions were to computerese for me as a former lecturer in Italian). I shall try to explain it in simple and plain words how it is done: A link on an ordinary web page downloads a stack (which Troy Rollins calls a stub and Sivakatirswami earlier has called a portal stack, I tend to call it a particular kind of net browser). This stack has to be in standalone format for each platform. When compressed their size is 1.2 and 1.6 MB. This stack is to reside permanently on the student's harddisk. In the stack there are menus (in my case in the form of buttons) which, when clicked, download and open the various educational programs. These programs are read into memory and leaves no trace on the student's harddisk (not even in the cache folder as far as I know). The various educational programs are very easy to maintain: each time I make a change on whatever platform, I just upload the stack to the server (no need to make platform specific versions before uploading). See Richard Herz' excellent explanation and examples: http://mechanics.ucsd.edu/research/herz/web_24/. I have also made a stack to show uploading/downloading, compression, proxy handling etc.: http://www.runrev.com/revolution/developers/developerdownloads/usercontributions.html. It is called Stacks Down - A Stack uploader downloader. Please feel free to ask further questions. -- 1. amanuensis Signe Marie Sanne e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Romansk Institutttel: +47 55 58 21 27 Oysteins gt. 1 5007 Bergen http://www.hf.uib.no/hfolk/mlab/default.html Norway ___ use-revolution mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-revolution
Download (and upload) stacks
Hello to all I have a stack (in MetaCard) which I had planned to make available at http://www.xworlds.com/metacard/contributors.htm. However, Kevin Miller answers me that this url will be taken down and moved to runrev.com. He would be willing to accept the stack, but it must first be converted to Revolution. Since I do not use Revolution, I wonder if one of you Revolution users would take the trouble to have a look at the stack and convert it. I'll send it to the first person who volunteers to do it. The stack is meant as a tutorial on how to download stacks from a server both from http and ftp urls. It also includes scripts on how to compress, upload and decompress the stacks before downloading, as well as how to bypass a proxy server. These scripts have proven very useful for me and my students and I am sure other educators who want to deliver material over the web will find them useful too. Sound Recording on Windows Platform
Hello, (using MetaCard 2.4.2B2) on Windows NT/2000 it is possible to record with MACE 3:1 at 44.100 kHz, 8bit, Mono ( record sound tMysoundFile with dialog). However, I have found it more convenient to use the built-in panel Sound recording. The script is: put word 1 to -2 of queryRegistry(hkey_classes_root\soundRec\shell\record\command\) into lyd launch lyd If someone has the recipe to launch Mac's built-in recorder Apple Simple Sound I would be grateful for a suggestion.
